African Fashion ARISE!!!

My African pride is on fire!!!!!! I had the pleasure of attending the ARISE fashion show on Thursday. I didn’t think I was going to see it. I missed the window to get an on the “list” and resolved to just miss it. One of my former students won tickets and invited me to attend. I was honored she thought of me. I was going to the show!

The who’s who of Black American Fashion was there and the beautiful African people were in the house! The lobby of Avery Fisher Hall was packed!

We got our tickets and parted ways since we weren’t seated together and as I followed the ushers lead, I was lead to the 4th row from the stage, smack in the center. My row mates were the infamous Ms Jay from ANTM and Nole Marin formerly of ANTM. In front of me was the author Terry McMillan and in front of her was June Ambrose. I was in good company!

The lights dropped, the music started and the fashion show began! I can’t remember the run of show but, here are pictures of the collections.

I couldn’t stop staring at the clothing. Such modern and current silhouettes with african fabrics, african inspired and “regular” fabrics. I wish this show was televised. The U.S. needed to see this! It broke every stereotype about what it means to be African. All Africans do not live in huts, have bones in their noses, don’t speak an unrecognizable language, swing from vines….should I go on? Having grown up with a West African mother and being around my extended family, I know better! I know more! Our fashion is much more than tie dye , kente and mud cloth!

I wanted young black children from around the world to be inspired! To dream! To create! I was definitely inspired! To do what I don’t know, LOL! Just inspired to continue being me, my African & white american self!

The show was fantastic! To top off the amazing fashion show, the beautiful Leona Lewis performed a 3 song set for the crowd. What a great evening.

I can’t wait to see what they’ll do next season. I hope you enjoy the photos and take the time to watch the video.

Reboot of ANTM Seems to Stay on Top

The ”sachezing” of long legs in 6-inch heels down the catwalk is back for cycle 17 for America’s Next Top Model! Revamped with an All-Star group of girls from previous cycles that began in 2003, Tyra plans to open more doors for these underdog girls and challenges them again to still see if they have what it takes to be America’s Next Top Model.

I got excited with the season opener wondering which girls would return and if they have been succesful after their cycle ended. Now, if you’re a true ANTM guru, you’ll know all the girls listed below:

The girls arrive at a house fit for a model in LaLa Land and already tensions begin to fly and big personalities clash. After reuniting and feeling so good after their free glasses of champagne, the first challenge was given: embody their personality in an outfit which got them on ANTM. Lisa was doted The Wild Child and jumped around in a red bikini (this is the girl who peed in a diaper on a challenge), Isis performed Confidence (she has now completed her sex change) and Angelea struck a pose for Girl from the Hood.

Judging panel was open to fanatics of the show and models at the Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live and each photo was displayed for the audience to vote for their favorite. The fabulous André Leon Talley and Miss J, amazing photographer with a new hairdo, Nigel Barker, and hip hop star and guest judge, Nicki Minaj, completed the judging panel. I’m a little skeptical about the guest judges for this season, The Game? Ashlee Simpson? Kristen Cavallari? Normally Tyra has great credible guest judges such as photographers, magazine editors, or previous models, so I’m not sure what happened this season. Maybe for better ratings?

Moving forward, the judging process continued as usual. Tyra and the judges review what they like and dislike about the photos. For this time around, I thought the critiques were too simple or maybe because it was the first challenge and they wanted to be easy on them. It could just be that I’m a tough judge! Tyra uttered her famous lines, “I only have one photo in my hands of the girl that will continue to move on to be America’s Next Top Model” and the first girl sent home for cycle 17 was… The Party Girl, Brittany Brower. Of course she didn’t seem too happy to leave this early in the competition, but you can’t win them all right?

The All-Star cycle should be entertaining to say the least. Although, I’m not sure how anymore different this cycle will be from others, besides different challenges, which are always great to see! There’s constantly going to be new and upcoming talent in the fashion, but how much longer are we going find that through a reality show? I’m a fan of ANTM, but there’s just too many seasons to keep up with and I’ve slightly fallen off the bandwagon. I’ll try my best to tune in week after week for this season since they are some girls I would love to see rock it again!

BABY'S FIRST #NYFW RUNWAY SHOW: FARAH ANGSANA S/S 2011

within minutes of the ifb conference ending, fran gets a call saying that she’s gotten us two passes at a runway show at nyfw. we didn’t know who were were going to see when we got there & still didn’t recognize the name farah angsana, which was fine with me because i always love surprises. i’m totally content with my first nyfw runway show being someone unknown to me -helps keep the anxiety down.

i had a great time hanging around inside ‘the studio,’ drinking some wine, picking up the wwd’s & other rags, & catching a quick glance at a few celebs. in all honesty, to me, celebs are just celebs. i don’t really go overly gaga around them, but the few that i did see that day were actually ones that i genuinely think are cool: ms jay alexander & fern mallis walking in before another show, simon & alex from the real housewives of nyc (i think they’re a kick, say what you will… they were at farah’s show, too.) & we saw ellen with a huge camera crew going inside as we were heading out. not too shabby for a first timer, eh? i thought the runway show was beautiful with a lot of dresses that i would wear & the hat was a great touch at the end.

i don’t normally wear or like green dresses for some reason (even though it looks a+ on blondes) & farah convinced me otherwise with this last dress. the collar is gorgeous & the splash of green feathers against beaded gold is lovely. i love long sleeves, plunging necklines & short hemlines, which all work well with this look.
