This will work for XP, VISTA + Windows 7

Does your PC take way too much time to load up? Or, just not as fast as you’d like? Stopping unnecessary background programs from running as your PC starts up can speed the process up massivley. Here are a few quick steps to getting rid of these memory hogging programs.

Run a search on your PC for “msconfig”. Once loaded it will look like this:

Click on the Startup tab and now you will see that every ticked program on the list loads up every time you log in.

Click OK. The next time you log back in to your PC, depending on the amount of programs you unchecked, it will be a lot quicker!

Some startups are useful, some are very annoying and can be deleted from the startup folder (Start

Some startups are useful, some are very annoying and can be deleted from the startup folder (Start – > Programs-> Startup) or going to msconfig (Start -> Run-> Msconfig-> Startup and uncheck the unwanted item).

But what happens when you voluntarily want an application to start when Windows loads?

The simple way is to find the startup folder and place a shortcut over there.

Start–>All programs and if you can’t find it there then it will be in

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR ACCOUNT NAME\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

put the shortcut of the program in this folder

Another way is Using the Registry:

The solution is to add the desired application into the registry telling it to start when Windows loads.

To do that you need to create a registry entry, which is very simple.

Run>”regedit”

in the registry, on the side click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Run. You made it.

If you want to add something right click (in the right part) and go to New>String Value. Name it what you will, such as “antivirus”, then double click on it and enter a path to the program you want (such as “C:\Program Files\EsetNod32\egui.exe”

Have a reboot to check it out, and thats all! It works well! You will notice it coming up in msconfig start up options…. just check it out…!!!

Udite, udite!!!

It’s a common problem among computer users: after a few months, our computers become weighed down by

It’s a common problem among computer users: after a few months, our computers become weighed down by programs and all sorts of other junk, and inevitably become sluggish. For the less tech-savvy users, this may induce thoughts like “Why is my computer so terrible?” or “I guess I could always upgrade this… what-cha-ma-callit RAM thing”.

Regular maintenance is usually required to keep a computer optimized and running at its best. Here are four programs that will make your computer faster, and four trade-offs to help make the best use out of the amount of RAM that’s installed on your computer.

MSConfig

For those who despair endlessly that their computer lags too much at start up yet don’t know how to go about fixing that, taking a look through MSConfig would be the place to start. Msconfig can by accessed by hitting Windows-R, which brings up the “Run” dialog, and typing in “msconfig”. Under the “Start Up” tab, there is a list of programs and executables that are launched when the computer starts up.

Having a lot of programs that start up when the computer boots is one of the main reasons that boot times are so long, for most PC users. Thus, the remedy would be to go through the entire list and uncheck anything that is unnecessary to have on boot up. If there are any entries you are not sure about, be sure to check them thoroughly on the internet before messing with them, as unchecking the wrong entries could potentially mess up the functionality of some of your programs.

CCleaner

CCleaner stands for “Crap Cleaner” and that is exactly what the program is great for. Over time, temporary files bog down your system, and take up unnecessary space in your harddrive. Thus, it is good PC maintenance practice to go through your computer once every while, and delete all the temp files.

It is incredibly simple: just navigate to the Cleaner tab in CCleaner, check everything you want to clean up (it would be best to leave the “Advanced” section alone, unless you know what those entries refer to), and then clean Analyze. You’ll then see an overview of what CCleaner is about to clean up and delete, and how much space CCleaner will free up for you. To permanently erase the temp files off your computer, simply click “Run Cleaner,” and all those temp files will be history.

Temp files aren’t the only junk files cluttering up your computer, however. Broken registry keys also pose a huge problem when it comes to useless files clogging up your system. Fortunately, CCleaner also has the ability to keep your registry clean.

To do this, use the “Registry” tab in Ccleaner. Once again, select all the entries you want CCleaner to prune, and let it do its thing. The only difference between this type of maintenance and clearing temp files is that if you accidentally delete a key that is still being used by your system, your computer can begin to function strangely. With that said, you should back up your registry settings before you give CCleaner the go ahead to torch everything. When you click “Fix Selected Issues” to delete the faulty registry entries, CCleaner will prompt you to back up your registry, and you should always click ‘yes’.

CCleaner was also discussed by Stefan in his article How To Uninstall Applications Efficiently And Remove Obsolete Files.

Revo Uninstaller

Revo Uninstaller is like the on-steroids version of your own Add and Remove Programs option in the Control Panel, but it also scans your computer for any files that the default uninstaller doesn’t catch, and deletes them. Revo’s layout is pretty much exactly the same as the Add and Remove Programs dialog, so it should be simple to navigate.

Revo also has a panel that lists all of the clean up tools that are provided with Windows systems. This menu can be accessed by clicking the Tools icon, and then the Windows Tools tab on the left.

For a more in-depth review of Revo Uninstaller, check out Jimmy’s article Revo Uninstaller Will Hunt Down Your Bloatware.

Defraggler

So once you’ve cleared all of the unnecessary files from your computer, there are now a bunch of holes where the data for those files used to be. While this may seem like no big deal to most people, having random gaps of empty space can also slow down your computer, because the rest of your files are still splintered into many different pieces, and the newly generated empty space isn’t being used efficiently. The more pieces a file is split to, the longer it takes the computer to access that file, so it makes sense to put all these pieces back together, once space has been cleared up to store whole files.

Defraggler is one of the best free defragmentation tools on the market. The visual representation of the space on the computer as pieces of files are being reunited is extremely enlightening, because most people don’t realize the extent of file splintering on their systems.

But cleaning up your computer isn’t the only thing you can do to optimize how fast your computer runs. Believe it or not, the programs you choose to perform daily actions such as chatting, or opening PDFs, can also affect your computer’s running speed.

Best Program Trade-Offs

This section discusses several alternative applications that perform more efficiently and provides your computer with the speed boost that it needs. Especially on slower computers, the difference is quite noticeable. Try it them out for yourselves!

1. Pidgin vs. AIM

If you don’t mind the spartan interface, Pidgin is a great multi-protocol IM client with a light footprint. Unfortunately it doesn’t natively support video chat, but it does have a plug-in for Skype (although you’ll need to have Skype running to use it).

2. Firefox or Chrome vs Internet Explorer

I recommend this switch not just based off memory footprint, but also because both Firefox and Chrome trump IE when it comes to customization and start-up times.

3. Foxit Reader vs Adobe Reader

Adobe Reader is notorious for its slow load times, especially when it comes to huge documents. Being a student, I regularly load 500+ page PDFs (the digital versions of my textbooks), so having to wait ages for them to load would be severely detrimental to my productivity. Foxit Reader, however, is so snappy that a 500+ page PDF loads almost instantly, and the browser integration is much smoother and faster than that of Adobe Reader. Once again, the interface is a bit more spartan, but Foxit definitely packs more features, and is a very worthy switch.

Click here for Guy’s article on more light alternatives to Adobe Reader.

4. VLC Player vs Windows Media Player

VLC is like the Pidgin of media players in that it supports a multitude of different video formats, and has a quick loading interface. Another great, recently implemented feature of VLC is that it can now be skinned to fit in with your windows theme!

5. Foobar2000 vs iTunes

The great thing about Foobar is that it is so customizable: everything from the layout of the interface to the plug-ins to extend the program’s capabilities can be tweaked. Many people worry that without iTunes, they wont’ be able to sync their iPod or iPhone, but Foobar actually has a plug-in to support iPod syncing.

Today, I’ve covered eight of the best programs for de-crapping your computer and maximizing your available RAM. Hopefully you’ve found a few of these programs to your liking, and decide to trade out your slow, sluggish apps for something a bit more snappy. Here they are again:

If your computer is slow at startup, the reason for that may be because there are too many programs

If your computer is slow at startup, the reason for that may be because there are too many programs that start up while the operating system is loading. Most of the times when you download programs from the Internet, they are set up to load automatically when the computer is started. This normally results in slowing down the startup process of the computer, especially in Windows based systems.

Sometimes, you might also have spyware, viruses or trojan horses that install themselves into the startup folders whilst you’re browsing the net. It is always safe to keep track of which programs and processes are running at all times, and to terminate those that are not required. By doing this, you’ll also be saving some system resources, which otherwise would be held up by unidentifiable and/or unwanted programs.

To end running processes and programs, you can hit Ctrl+Alt+Del. This launches the Task Manager. From the Processes tab, you can terminate the programs you’re not using. However, this does not eliminate the unwanted programs from the startup list completely because when you restart the computer, there they are again, silently running in the background and wasting your RAM.

The best ways to clean up the list of startup programs is as follows: First navigate to this folder: Start/Programs/Startup and remove the shortcuts to the programs that you’d rather not have launched at startup. Secondly, visit the MSCONFIG utility and change the startup options from there.

You do this by clicking on Start > Run, then typing in ‘msconfig’ and hitting the Enter key. This brings up a dialog box. Click on the ‘Startup’ tab and uncheck all the programs that you don’t wish to launch when the computer is started. You’ll notice many programs that run in the background but are not really required.

Finally, the last thing you can do is change program options or settings from the program itself, for instance MSN messenger, Yahoo Messenger and Skype all have a tools/options or options/preferences menu from where you can choose not to have the program started when Windows is started.

This is a very useful tip and you’ll notice that your computer’s booting process also becomes faster since these unwanted programs no longer occupy the memory resources unnecessarily. Do leave comments on any other ways you can clean out your system and make it more efficient.

Hello everyone and welcome to my first guide. This guide will make you get the most of your computer

Hello everyone and welcome to my first guide. This guide will make you get the most of your computer power and mostly help you remove unneccessary stuff slowing down your computer.

1. Removing unneccessary processes.

When using a computer on a daily basis, you often stumble on different sites and programs telling you that you need to install a software. These softwares sometimes put themself into always running on your computer and checking if you are visiting the website or whatever you need them for.

For example: If you ever installed/used java im almost sure that you are right now running a process using about 1000k of your ram checking if you are visiting sites using java. Now you are probably thinking , but what if i do visit a site that needs me to use java? It is simple, when visiting a site using java the site tells the computer to start java. The reason you are already running a little java starter is to start it faster.

Having a iPod/iPhone or ever installed iTunes? Then you have a 4600k iTunes helper module always running on your pc even when iTunes is not.

Discovering and removing processes.

Start the Task Manager.(ctrl+alt+delete) Press the tab called processes.

Here you can see all processes curently running.

Tip. Press the user name dropdown to sort by user name. The ones using your login name are the ones that are safely to kill without shutting down your pc, although you should not kill any possess unless you know exactly what the process is for. The ones using SYSTEM as user name are the ones that are very critical to touch. And closing some of them results in your pc trying to shut down.

Note: Killing a process here doesnt mean it cant be started again.

We will not kill any processes with the task manager since then we would only end them for this session. Instead we will remove the process from auto starting with your computer start.

Preventing processes from auto starting when starting your computer.

Press “windows button+r” wich is shortcomand for RUN.

Type “msconfig” in the box and hit ok/enter.

Press the startup tab.

Uncheck processes you dont feel you need to start when starting your computer and hit apply.

I had 4 startups i dont need and i it was only a week since i formatted it.

1- Aprire il menu “Start” e cliccare su “Esegui”;

2- Digitare il comando “msconfig” e premere “Invio” . Apparira’ una finestra: “Utilita’ Configurazione di Sistema”;

3- Nella finestra, cliccare sul tab “Avvio”. Comparira’ una lista di “Elementi di Avvio”;

4- Ora, facendo attenzione a non disattivare gli elementi indispensabili, togliere la spunta da processi che non sono di utilita’ per l’avvio di Windows (ad esempio, live messenger, utorrent, ecc, quei processi che sappiamo non essere parte del sistema operativo e possiamo avviare successivamente);

5- Ultimo passo, cliccare su “Applica” seguito da “Chiudi” e riavviare;

http://www.processlibrary.com/it/

http://www.ccleaner.com/

4. Disabilitate tutti i processi all’avvio

start-> esegui e digitate msconfig

As I was fixing a computer lately, I was reminded of how other IT folks just love disabling msconfig in windows.

msconfig is a simple utility on our Windows OS that takes care of the startup process, available on Windows Xp and Vista (just type msconfig on run command bar in Xp or at Start Search box at the orb on Windows Vista). It’s part of Windows installation, no need to download or install it.

The power of msconfig lies on its capability to aid us in troubleshooting start-up issues and allow us to handle what applications should run and should not at boot time.

The general tab (msconfig in Vista) gives us three options:

1. Normal Startup – all drivers and services are loaded, microsoft services and third-party services. This is the default.

2. Diagnostic Startup – load basic devices, drivers and services only. usually, those that are only needed to fire up your PC. Used when troubleshooting start-up issues.

3. Selective Startup – more specific choices what to load on boot up, you can load system services only, startup items only (those that you allow from the startup tab on msconfig), original boot configuration only, or all of three. also used when troubleshooting issues on boot up.

At this point, you might be starting to wonder, and may be asking, what about msconfig? why the hell should I care?

For one, there are lots of IT guys out there who love to disable this permanently as part of their fix. That is want I rant about. Some people love to disable msconfig to make the system run and feel faster, but that is thwarted, that is faking. When our OS lags, this might be a result of many reasons. One could be lack of resources, i.e. memory, disk space, processor, etc. Second reason could be you overstuffed your system with applications some of it you don’t even use. Why fake speed by disabling msconfig, just to let people believe the system is running faster.

Over the years of my IT experience, I had a lot about this scenario, end-users complaining because their software or Operating Systems are not running as it should only to find out that the technician they hired disabled msconfig. How amateur that is.

My opinion is, if you do want your OS to run smooth, pack in more hardware resources, increase the memory, if you have 512mb why not get 2gb, why not upgrade the processor? or the buy a faster running hard drive. or remove the softwares that you don’t use, I bet in every PC, there will be one or two softwares installed that are not in use.

The honest me tells that msconfig has many things to do and disabling it would cause more problems than solutions. In fact, it’s not a sound solution at all. I might accept the idea if you are troubleshooting or isolating startup problem, but you have to return it to its Normal state afterwards. Don’t disable it forever. If softwares are getting in the way during boot ups remove it or at least google your way to find a solution for the problem. Check for updates, find permanent solutions rather than kill msconfig. I am sure we can do better than killing the little app and consider the issue fixed. No. Unacceptable.

Want to figure out msconfig? check here.

Ciao!

As your computer ages, more and more programs that you have installed or downloaded are loaded into system memory at boot time.

As the memory becomes loaded with these programs, then less memory is available for system use.

As the system program runs, and if enough memory is not available then the computer has to work on a portion of the program, store it and then read more of the program or data from the hard drive and continue this process until all of the program or data has been run by the computer system.

This causes the hard drive to “thrash” or read and write many more times than should be necessary thereby slowing down the computer.

MSCONFIG

Microsoft System Configuration Utility, is a utility to troubleshoot the Windows startup process by deleting the unnecessary programs from loading into memory.

It is bundled with the Microsoft Windows XP operating system.

Modifies which programs run at startup, edits certain configuration files, and simplifies controls over Windows services.

Microsoft did not link this program to the Start Menu or Control Panel, but is accessible by using the Run dialog to launch ‘msconfig’ on any system on which the user has administrator access.

The chief benefit of using this program to edit these files is that it provides a simplified GUI to manipulate sections of the startup files and the Windows registry tree pertaining to the Windows boot sequence.

Windows can also be configured to perform a diagnostic startup (load a minimum set of drivers, programs and services).

During the boot process, many third party files are loaded into memory, most of which can be disabled from loading, thereby saving time and RAM space.
