I took Windows 7 (the Ultimate version) for a test ride on my MSI Wind, mostly to compare it with the Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix, which, as is seen beneath this post, gave me a fair slew of trouble.I’ve participated in the Windows 7 open beta, and had both the early beta builds and the subsequent release candidate on the MSI Wind. Since that was ‘ye olden days’, before I decided I wanted Linux on both my home box and in my backpack, I don’t really remember how well those did (although I do recall a sleek-looking and rather snappy system). Long story short – I’ve decided to see how well the polished, final version will do. Let’s take it from the top.

Battery life. To my dismay, UNR only squeezed an average three hours, twenty minutes out of my six cell. Seven reports, rather accurately, full four hours to completely drain the cells.

Performance. As I have mentioned previously, I wasn’t too fond of UNR’s performance after disabling the KMS. Although I can’t really compare the two – since my comparison is usually based on how the browser does, and it’d be Firefox 3.5 vs Chrome 3.0 here – I believe that although Seven operates slightly faster, UNR took less time to load the login screen.

Device support. Try as I might, I never got 9.10 to recognize Wind’s built-in camera and microphone. Since I use Skype a lot, that’s really important for me. Seven had it supported ever since the second beta, so no trouble there. Also, the performance of my external optical drive was spotty at best with UNR, it works fine with Seven – I don’t really comprehend the cause of this.

I deeply love Ubuntu, and when I find my 9.04 version CD again, I’ll probably go back to it in a flash. But when comparing Seven and UNR 9.10 – Seven wins so far. If I encounter anything disqualifying, I’ll report back.

Edit: I’ve removed the Launcher from run-at-startup programs and rebooted, which solved most of my problems – although some more graphically demanding tasks, such as watching a movie off YouTube, cause way more hiccups than I’d like. Also, the flickering isn’t gone entirely – I might elaborate on that one once I discover a pattern to it.

After having used Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 for a long time on my ultraportable (an MSI U-100, or “Wind”), I’ve decided it was time to give the 9.10 a spin. I’ve successfully upgraded my home box from 9.04 to 9.10 about a day after it was released no problem, so I figured this will be a painless operation as well.

I hate being wrong.

Okay, let’s stop here for a minute. Before you decide to drop me a hatemail saying that Ubuntu is a great distro and everyone who doesn’t like it is probably an encyclopadedophiliac (go look it up) – don’t. I love Ubuntu, and have been using it for years now. But there’s just a bone I need to pick with Canonical. Right now.

Immediately after the installation disc (or thumbdrive, to be exact) booted, the screen started flickering. Constantly. The brightness went up, and down, and up, and down. Upon completing my install and connecting to my home WiFi, I looked it up – Canonical’s take on this is “oh well, it happens”, apparently. Okay, I’m a Linux geek, I never expect it to work out of the box – I adhered to the recommendation there, rebooted, awesome – no flickering.

The sad thing is, that adding this particular option to grub2 fixed my brightness control – at the cost of making the launcher (which I personally don’t love too much, but didn’t get around to disabling on this install yet) terribly laggy and slow. Now, even if I _wanted_ to turn the launcher off, I’d have to choose the appropriate settings screen from – you guessed it – the launcher, and even though I can navigate the menus somehow – at the cost of many profanities and a shaken mental stability – I can’t seem to find the option for it. I’m beginning to think it’s forced in this version.

I love UNR for it’s great way of extending battery life on my MSI, but this cannot go on. I apologize for the random rambling, but I needed to vent some steam – if it helps you (while deciding or otherwise) at all, be sure to drop me a note.

OS X Daily has confirmed the reports of the dropping of Intel’s Atom processor support in the OS X 10.6.2 update that was released yesterday. There has been a great deal of speculation whether or not Apple would make this move, and this information confirms the rumors.

If you have a Hackintosh Netbook, you will want to refrain from updating to 10.6.2. This release officially disables Atom support. Posts among many netbook forums are riddled with problems of 10.6.2 instant rebooting their Atom based netbooks.

It’s been a while since I’ve covered anything about this netbook, so I figured you’d need a refresher. The Wind U110 Eco comes with: a 10.1-inch LED-backlit display with a 1,024 x 600 resolution, an Intel Atom Z530 1.6GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB HDD, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, an integrated webcam, a 4-in-1 card reader, a gigabit Ethernet port, and a 9-cell battery that will supposedly last for 9 hours. It’s now available for $399.99, so check out the official Amazon listing here.

Also was tun?

I found an article/review on Gizmodo about an industrious company called MacWind that’s selling stock MSI Wind U100s running OS X for $399. The full article/review can be found here.

The sheer fact the author of the article muses aloud that the mere discussion of the product will probably warrant a cease and desist points out the misdirected approach of Apple. Why should Apple care WHERE their OS is running? As long as Apple is selling a unique license with every Wind why should they give a hoot where the money is coming from? Isn’t that what the free market is about?

As long as they get their cut, Microsoft doesn’t care what you do with your Windows 7 install disk.

A senior Dell executive has spoken out at the OpenSource World conference regarding returns on Linux

A senior Dell executive has spoken out at the OpenSource World conference regarding returns on Linux netbooks.

Microsoft famously claimed that Linux netbook returns were 4 or 5 times higher than their Windows counterpart, and that they owned the netbook market with a 96% share. Suffice to say, this stirred up a fair bit of controversy in LinuxLand, and there were many articles published refuting this claim.

In short, the 96% market-share figure was proven to be bogus as it only included sales from (primarily US-based) bricks & mortar stores. Online sales were excluded. Since the majority of stores don’t carry Linux PCs of any sort (this is certainly the case around where I live), naturally most open-sourcers buy their gear online. Furthermore, sales throughout the rest of the world – particularly Asia where netbooks are very popular – were also excluded. This statistic is completely meaningless, however it grabs headlines. Score one to Microsoft’s FUD department.

The assertion that the Linux return rate is 4 or 5 times higher is a little murkier. The quote seems to be attributed to an MSI employee, with Canonical supposedly chiming in to agree. However, researchers dispute the authenticity of the quote, as MSI hadn’t even released a Linux version of their Wind netbook at the time of the original remark. Canonical have gone on record to say that their supposed agreement with the quote was a flat-out lie.

It was interesting, therefore, to hear Dell’s Senior Product Marketing Manager, Todd Finch, speak about the issue at OpenSource World. He said that, for Dell, returns were a “non-issue”. He went on to say “we don’t see a significant difference between the return rate for Windows versus the rate for Linux” and that Microsoft “are making something of nothing“. Given that Dell are one of the world’s largest PC manufacturers with a hefty market-share, I find this quite significant.

To digress slightly, it seems to me that lately Dell, along with Intel, seem to have stepped away from Microsoft’s thrall somewhat. For many years, those three corporations seemed to be in bed with each other and they dominated the PC market. However, times have changed and Dell are shipping Linux PCs in response to customer demand. Intel, in conjunction with the Linux Foundation, are developing the open-source Moblin Operating System, designed specifically for netbooks and mobile internet devices. Microsoft must be rather peeved to see their closest partners cosy up with open-source rivals. But business is business.

Perhaps Dell are looking further and finally realising that, as a hardware supplier, more choice on the desktop can only benefit them. Quite simply, more competition equals more bargaining power with MS. Intel, on the other hand, don’t care what operating system you run – so long as it is powered by an Intel chip. Intel’s biggest competition on mobile internet devices is the ARM processor. It’s not as powerful as the Intel Atom CPU, but it has very low power consumption. It is in Intel’s best interests to give users a fabulous experience on their (Intel-powered) devices – hence the Moblin development – thus shutting out ARM. At the end of the day though, Intel don’t care whether you run Moblin or Windows, or any other OS for that matter.

Intel and Dell are certainly looking ahead and trying to cover all the bases. It seems to me that the only loser in this scenario is Microsoft … oh well, them’s the breaks!

3. ga usah install aplikasi yg macem-macem, cukup office, internet, little games, dan mungkin multimedia standard kayak winamp, wmplayer, acdsee.

4. jangan lupa install winrar.

5. Pesan khusus buat teman-teman sebelum membeli netbook betul-betul dipikirkan.

I’ve had an MSI Wind (with Windows XP) for about a year now. It’s my first and only netbook. Yesterday I spent seven hours on the train, but opted not to take the Wind with me – something that made me wonder whether the Wind is fit for purpose. Unfortunately, it isn’t, and here’s why:

Battery life: I’m only getting about 90 minutes, and mobile computing isn’t really mobile if you have to lug a charger around and seek out places to connect it. It seems that later U100s have double the battery capacity, but that adds size and weight.

It’s not powerful enough: Netbooks were never intended for running Flight Simulator or Matlab, and of course I don’t have anything like that installed. However, the Wind even seems too slow when doing basic things like web browsing and office applications.

The track pad is poor: I’m not a connoisseur of these things but this just doesn’t always respond the way it should.

So, what’s to be done? Well, hopefully Google’s Chrome OS might speed things up and maybe reduce power consumption. I’ll certainly try installing that when it comes out. But – and this is why Ubuntu isn’t already installed – I need a full featured word processor and presentation tool and they just don’t exist for Linux, yet …
