So, online apps is apparently actually referring to a service called Google Documents. Which is frikken sweet, by the way. It’s what every single one of my group projects in highschool needed, because I always ended up doing all the writing. Always. Anyway, basically, google hosts a document for you, and you and nine buddies can edit this thing at the same time. You can actually watch live edits (this is more in the spreadsheet), and write something collaboratively. There are three options that I know of: A word document, a spread sheet and a faux powerpoint presentation. Overall, pretty cool.

I can imagine this will help with so much. I’m just thinking of ai-kon right now. What better way to get a team writing up a schedule? I will bring it up to the next meeting, and hopefully this will eliminate some of the headaches. This sort of thing is really going to streamline the way things are done, and I am excited. But it is only a matter of time before Google becomes sentient. It already runs our lives… I’m just saying get ready for the end.

For the second activity, I explored Meebo. Definitely a cool service, it lets you sing in with your meebo username, and signs you into all you different messenger applications, including facebook (though that one is having bugs). I have significantly fewer online friends now, but when I was in highschool… Well, I had a few online only friends. And of course, they all used different services, and I’d be running three different messenger apps and they would crash my 10gig computer. It was overall a good time.

These days I mostly use msn. I can’t even remember my other usernames, but I can definitely see the attraction of Meebo. To be honest, I’m surprised I didn’t hunt some service like this down back in the day. I’m pretty impressed, and Ic an see myself using it in the future.

Primeramente debes cerrar sesion y tambien cerrar el ícono de la bandeja al lado del reloj.

Haciendo clic derecho sobre el ícono del acceso directo a MSN podes ver la ruta al archivo al que hace referencia (Destino):

En el caso del ejemplo es: C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger
Abriendo el Explorador de Windows navegas hasta esa carpeta y haces clic derecho sobre el ejecutable de MSN y luego en “Propiedades”:

Aparecerá la siguiente ventana y vas a la pestaña “Compatibilidad”:

En “Modo Compatibilidad” haces clic para activar la opción “Ejecutar este programa en modo compatibilidad para:”

Atencion ahora. Dependiendo tu sistema operativo, es la siguiente eleccion:

• Para Windows Vista: Opción Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
• Para Windows XP: Opción Windows 2000
  • (Tener en cuenta que Windows 2000 no acepta opciones de MSN Plus, por lo que por ejemplo no tendrá la opcion de ver nicks con colores)
• Das click en “Aplicar”, luego en “Aceptar” e inicias sesion normalmente.

I can’t believe in this day and age, I could actually forget to bring my mobile phone out with me. There are several electronic devices I can never leave home without, namely my iPod Classic, my HTC Touch Diamond 2 and my Sony T300 camera. Apparently, I forgot my phone on the fateful Friday the 13th.

The strangest part was I didn’t realise it till I was in the train en route to campus. I begun searching through my bag franctically hoping that my precious is not lost, only to realise that yes, I left it on the dining table. Great.

My reflex thought was: “I got to so tweet thing NOW”. It was a -smack forehead- moment because my phone’s not with me to tweet and it’s not logical to whip out my laptop for an eight minute train ride to Jurong East. It sure did feel like the beginning of a bad day.

I was supposed to be in school early for the class phototaking session and I didn’t know where’s the venue. How awesome right? I closed my eyes and mumbled a prayer before the train reached Dover station. I was right on time and luckily, Stella was waiting at the station! You have no idea how relieved I was there and then.

The rest of the day was quite a breeze because my brain didn’t fail me when I wanted to recall some phone numbers. With the help of Twitter, Facebook and MSN Messenger, contacting people via social media proved to be pretty much possible.

That got me thinking, do we still spend a lot of time using our mobile phones to make phone calls or are we using it to access social media websites? Yes, one can always argue that a mobile phone’s main purpose is for making calls especially during emergencies. Other than that, most of your friends are connected to you one way or another via social media.

Even so, we use mobile phones to go online because, well, it’s mobile. It takes away the hassle of switching on your laptop just to check an update.

It so happened that it was an emergency-free day and I survived!

El programa es bastante liviano y su instalación es muy sencilla, no necesita de grandes configuraciones y funciona correctamente en navegadores como Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox y Google Chrome.

Los pasos para mostrar la información del video que estamos viendo, luego de haberlos instalado el programa, son: 1. Abrir sesión en MSN.

2. Iniciar Now Watching.

3. Ver videos en los sitios listados arriba.

Now Watching es gratuito y pueden descargarlo desde la web oficial del creador (enlace al final). También debo mencionarles que el programa en inglés ha sido traducido a varios idiomas como francés, chino, etc. (menos español, lol).

We learnt about VoIP, which is like Voice over Internet Protocol. Call me dinosaur but i still dont see the hype of Skype. I had Skype for quite a long time already and till now i only have one friend on my contact list (is that what you call it?!). Why use Skype when there’s msn messenger, although aMSN on mac can sometimes be very “helpful”. If i wanted to hear my friend’s voice, i could easily just pick up my handphone and dial them up. I know my mom uses Skype to communicate with her clients overseas and so does her whole office actually. I know sometimes it can be real tiring to type the latest gossip we want to share so badly with our friends, and the easy way out is definitely to call but i still have my reservations. Or maybe it’s cause i dont like talking to mac.

iTV (Interactive Television)
For someone like me who doesnt really that much time watching tv, i feel that it’s useless. Who actually watches shows on a television anymore? But then again, that’s me. I was watching Gossip Girl on my laptop and the iTV thing actually came on (since it was recorded from a tv). The one thing that i remembered quite clearly was surfing facebook and twitter while watching tv. That really brings multi-tasking to a new high. What’s so fun about doing that while watching tv, whats with the programme screen minimized. How can anyone concentrate on the tv show while being distracted by facebook or twitter?

It’s so tedious to do a podcast! The recording, editing, adding in the sound effects, uploading then publishing it? If you are clueless about a podcast, here’s what our ever so friendly wikipedia has to say about podcast : A podcast is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and downloaded through web syndication.

So why do organizations want to spend money doing podcasts when advertisements can do the job equally as well? Hmm, different target market? I guess there’s more money saved when it comes to podcasts cause you dont have to actually hire anyone to do a podcast as compared to an ad. but is the time spent doing a podcast spent wisely?

More Spotify stuff? Yep. I’ve been meaning to write about a few of these nifty things for a while, but never had the time to do so.

This time I’d like to bring you Toastify. Again, sorry mobile broadband users, this is another thing that won’t work for us on our smart phones.

You’re probably wondering what Toastify is, and I hate to tell you this… But, no. It doesn’t enable your toaster to play Spotify, although that does remind me of the dancing toaster from Ghost Busters. Feel free to leave if you thought you were going to find some kind of self powering, dancing toaster.

Anyway, on to what it really does: Toastify is an open source application that improves Spotify. The app does this by offering two things:

• Hotkeys – Control Spotify from any other application, including things like games. Just hi-jacked a car rental in GTA and want to play faster music? Skip tracks from in-game! The default hot keys:
  • Ctrl Alt Up = Play/Pause
  • Ctrl Alt Down = Stop
  • Ctrl Alt Right = Next track
  • Ctrl Alt Left = Previous track
  • Ctrl Alt M = Mute on/off
  • Ctrl Alt Page Up = Volume up (expirimental support)
  • Ctrl Alt Page Down = Volume down (expirimental support)
  • Ctrl Alt Space = Show toast
  • Ctrl Alt S = Show Spotify
  • Ctrl Alt C = Copy track information to clipboard New!
• “Toast” popups – These are the sort of pop ups you get when using MSN Messenger, a small pop up above the task bar will show you what song is playing when it first starts.

You know how you are always doing something but it never occurs to you what you are doing it until someone points it out?
Well, I’m sure that Continuous Partial Attention is a term you will find close to the scenario I just described.

Ok, so what the hell is Continuous Partial Attention?

Here’s what wikipedia says:

The term Continuous Partial Attention (CPA) was coined by Linda Stone in 1998. Author Steven Berlin Johnson describes this as a kind of multitasking: “It usually involves skimming the surface of the incoming data, picking out the relevant details, and moving on to the next stream. You’re paying attention, but only partially. That lets you cast a wider net, but it also runs the risk of keeping you from really studying the fish.”Continuous partial attention is about scanning continuously for opportunities across a network, not solely about optimizing one’s time by multitasking.

Alright, sounds familiar? No? Let me give you an example:

You are typing your blog entry for the submission of nct and then your msn messenger conversation pops up – a close friend is talking you on msn. You stop blogging for a while and replies the conversation. Then while waiting for you friend to reply, you click onto one of your many tabs in firefox, which is

(A) Twitter or
(B) Facebook.

If your answer is (A), proceed to (C)
If your answer is (B), proceed to (D)

(C) You see an interesting tweet and re-tweets it.
(D) Your friend just sent you a Cafe world gift and you accept it, then going to Cafe World to check up on your Cafe earnings.

5 minutes later, you go back to wordpress and continue on your blogging.

Yes, you are guilty of Continuous Partial Attention.

Many ask, What’s the difference between CPA and multi-tasking?
Sinkai says that the greatest difference is that you multi-task to get many work done fast and efficiently, while CPA allows you to participate in many work but slows down your efficiency in the main job.

If that’s the case, isn’t CPA bad?
You may say so, so why do many of us participate in CPA then? Experts says that it’s because there is this need for us to stay connected with people. Think of it, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Msn messengers, aren’t they all tools of some sort that you use to connect with your friends and family? Which explains why there are some people who refuse to sign in to msn messenger or other social networking websites when they are studying as they are afraid of being distracted.

And just in case you are still confused the meaning of CPA…

To pay continuous partial attention is to pay partial attention — CONTINUOUSLY

PS: It would have took me half an hour to type this entry but due to my participation in CPA (Cafe World’s cooking!), it took me an hour. Ask me if CPA is worth the extra time to blog that is taken off my sleep…I wouldn’t have an answer.
