Every day I hear somebody tell me they want to start a career in the music industry, they want produce musiclike what comes on ‘MTV’. They ask me questions about how the sounds are made, do you think they are using real instruments and loads more. They are really interested and all I can do is tell them the real deal.

If you want to become the next big producer like who you listen to, you need to get your music productionknowledge up. You need to find someone who knows everything about what you want to do and beyond, someone who knows where your coming from. They could be someone your age or older, they are going to be a mentor to you, almost like a manager how allows you to go on making music the way you want to and allows you to make your own mistakes. You need someone who can show you what music production software you need such as Logic Pro, Fruity Loops, Audacity and more. The hardware is just as important too to get real sounds, MPC’s, Mixers, Microphones, Amps & Audio interfaces are all very important things when you are producing music.

Are you sure you want to become a music producerbecause these things are available for you and if you are willing to work hard you have a good chance in succeeding in the music industry. But first you need to get your knowledge up and start studying today from home in your free time. There is a website that teaches you everything about music production and has everything you need to know and more. Everything about the music studio, it will teach you about mastering, dynamics, mixing and compressing all of your own songs. Finishing and mastering other peoples songs and you could make it big doing that. (Sound Engineers get paid!)

But as I have already said, get your knowledge up as much as you can. There are so many people everyday saying ‘they want to produce music’ and never do!

Good luck and get your knowledge up.

A map, albeit an ugly one, of the alternatives under study for BART to Livermore. If BART really wants to sell this extension, maybe use a background color that isn't charcoal?

This post will be the first of a two part look at ridership estimates in public transit: first, looking at the merit of BART’s Livermore Extension; then, a more formal examination of ridership estimates as a whole.

As Transbay Blog reports, BART has just released the Draft Program EIR for its latest extension to Livermore, outlining five alternatives fill the 5.1-13.2 mile “gap” in BART service from Dublin to Livermore, a wealthy suburb of roughly 85,000 people. The cost? $1.12-$3.8 billion.

This extension is really the latest in BART’s expansion paradigm that seeks to complete the system’s original goals of a seamless all-Bay system, while rewarding suburban taxpayers in the process. Livermore is just one piece of BART’s next wave of expansion that includes San Jose, Antioch, and the Oakland Airport. I’ve often discussed how BART is really the only system in the nation that defies logic by building miles and miles of costly heavy rail subway technology to stretch its system to outlying suburbs, but today I’d like to focus on how BART has managed to keep getting funding for these projects with its ridership projections. BART has justified the merit of the Livermore extension with forecasts that project as many as 38,000 new riders by 2035, which is not bad at all for a suburban extension. But, before we jump to conclusions with these “facts”, let’s take a look at the performance of BART’s ridership estimates in its last wave of extensions in the 1990s:

Pittsburg/Bay Point–achieved 53% of its projected ridership

4.5 miles $506 million (1996 dollars)

Daily ridership: 12,000 (2005 est.) 6,300 (2005 actual) 6,600 (2009)

Dublin/Pleasanton–achieved 74% of its projected ridership

14 miles $517 million (1996 dollars)

Daily ridership: 11,000 (2005 est.) 8,100 (2005 actual) 10,100 (2009)

SFO/Millbrae–achieved 45% of its projected ridership

8.2 miles $1.5 billion (2003 dollars)

Daily ridership: 34,300 (2010 est.) 15,500 (2009 actual)

Total, BART’s extensions have achieved an average of 52% of their projected ridership.

The Livermore extension alternatives fall into two groups: a longer two station alignment expected to attract 33,000-38,000 riders in 2035 for a cost of $3-4 billion, and a shorter one station alignment expected to attract 23,000-25,000 in 2035 for $1-1.75 billion. Here’s the catch: BART reports these numbers in the EIR as boardings and exits, so already you can cut them in half to compare them with other stations, leaving us with roughly 17,000-19,000 riders for the two-station alternatives and 12,000 riders for the one-station alternatives (remember that Livermore is a city of about 85,000, yet BART is projecting as many riders per station as stations in Downtown Oakland, Downtown Berkeley, and the Mission). Given that BART has on average only reached 52% of its long-term projections and has never exceeded 73%, it’s reasonable to expect about 9,000-10,000 riders for the two station alternatives and about 6,000 for the one station alternatives. For the sake of this analysis, let’s give BART the benefit of the doubt and assume that actual ridership will be 73% of its projection, yielding 12,000 riders and 8,000 riders, respectively.

Let’s take a step back for a second: At 7-13 miles, BART to Livermore will cost $3-4 BILLION for a best-case scenario of 12,000 daily riders? As Barney Frank would say: on what planet does BART spend most of its time? BART would say that these are the most accurate models possible for 2035 transportation behavior, so it’s unfair to compare them with current ridership figures and past projects. I say, what credibility does BART have left to make such assertions? BART has NEVER delivered on its ridership estimates, and when the stakes at hand are billions and billions of dollars for one of our most effective responses to climate change, peak oil, declining public health, congestion, and population growth, why trust them now? Even the simple 5 mile, $1.5 billion for a maximum of 8,000 riders is a complete ripoff–as I’ve written before, Salt Lake City is building 70 miles of rail for $2.8 billion in seven years, while Denver is building 140 miles of rail and BRT for $6.2 billion in seven years. In contrast, add together the great triumvirate of BART’s Livermore, San Jose/Warm Springs, and Oakland Airport extensions, and BART is building about 35 miles of heavy rail for $10.5 billion over the next two decades.

The issue here is how the Bay Area will make the most of federal, state, and regional funds in the next 25 years to deal with an additional 2 million people. Transit money does not grow on trees; every extra dollar we pour into BART’s heavy rail system is a dollar that could be going toward Geary light rail, ACE, Capitol Corridor, Dumbarton rail, a streetcar system in Oakland, a better VTA light rail system, a region-wide BRT network, and ultimately a second transbay tube. Between the Dublin/Pleasanton, Pittsburg/Bay Point, SFO/Millbrae, Livermore, and San Jose extensions, as well as the Oakland Airport Connector, the question becomes:

How many billions must we spend before we realize that BART’s heavy rail system is the single most cost-ineffective technology available?

After having been set apart on the evening of the 17th, Elder Ramsbottom arrived nice and early at Heathrow for his flight to Atlanta, where he would change to his flight to Salt Lake City. All did not go to plan, however, as the flight was delayed by 5 hours! Eventually he left sunny old England and was on his way to the MTC.

But Elder Ramsbottom did not intend on waiting until he arrived in Provo to start the work…not that he had much of a choice. On the first flight he had the chance to speak to his neighbour about the gospel (they had no where to run, a rare oppurtunity!), and on the second flight he was asked to give a preisthood blessing to one of the other passengers on his row who was sick.

Finally he arrived in Salt Lake City, most likely exhausted. A very kind family offered to drive him to Provo, and he finally arrived at the Missionary Training Centre… TO BE CONTINUED!!

Annapolis, MD—At the annual Maryland Tourism and Travel Summit (formerly known as the Governor’s Tourism Industry Conference), Nov. 4-6, a full contingent of professionals from Maryland’s tourism and travel industry elected the 2010 Board of Directors for the Maryland Tourism Council. The Board of Directors represent many facets of Maryland’s tourism industry and their range of experience provides the necessary leadership to guide the directives of the MTC, foster its growth, and promote Maryland’s tourism industry on business and consumer levels.

The 2009 Board was led by Chair Deb Carter with the Buttonwood Beach RV Resort in Earleville, and in her term the MTC faced the challenges of tourism budget cuts by the state but provided members with valuable resources and education for maintaining business and marketing efforts during down economic times. The 2010 Board will be led by Ross Peddicord, Co-Publisher of Maryland Life Magazine in Frederick. Ross expects the MTC to continue its lobbying for increased tourism budgets in 2010, but says “The members of the MTC are a strong representation of all our state has to offer and the revenue that the tourism industry brings to the state is significant so we are well poised to fight for budget increases in 2010.”

Along with the election of Ross Peddicord as the 2010 Chair, the MTTS attendees elected Sandy Turner from Cecil County Tourism in Perryville to serve as First Vice Chair and Rachelina Bonacci from Howard County Tourism in Ellicott City to serve as Second Vice Chair. Monroe Harrison from the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor was elected Treasurer and Scott Walker was elected Secretary. The 2010 Board of Directors will serve for two years and are supported by the Immediate Past Chair, three Past Chairs, six representatives from Maryland’s various travel and tourism organizations and departments, and 13 Directors at Large who serve for two-year terms.

Initiatives of the 2010 Board of Directors for the Maryland Tourism Council include stepped up lobbying efforts with a Tourism Industry Awareness Day in Annapolis while the General Assembly is in session and planned growth of the MTC membership base with Barb Siegert of Queen Anne’s County as the new membership chairman. Mary Jo McCulloch, President and CEO of the Maryland Tourism Council works directly with the elected Board and is looking forward to continuing the lobbying and marketing efforts of the MTC with the new Board.

Reaching the major rail or air terminal in a city in India is a challenge – so is the task of

Reaching the major rail or air terminal in a city in India is a challenge – so is the task of getting home from these transport hubs. But in Bangalore, the BMTC has laid the foundation for a bus service from various parts of the city to Bangalore International Airport.

It is not difficult to spot these airport buses for some very basic reasons: They are air-conditioned Volvos, painted bright red and featuring electronic sign boards with route information – those that are exclusive to the airport have a “Vayu Vajra” tag and have the picture of an airplane on the sides.

It is a short walk from the bus bays to the airport terminal. Of course, there are some touts waiting to get the unwary passenger close to the terminal...

If you were to compare Bangalore and Chennai, what sets the service in the two cities apart is the weak quality of services offered by Chennai’s Metropolitan Transport Corporation. It is limited both in scope and plan.

In Chennai, the MTC operates just one route from Chennai Central to Tiruvanmiyur, the A1, both in the lower-tariff deluxe mode and the more expensive air-conditioned service. We used to read about another service from Central station to the Chennai airport. That now appears to be missing, since the information on this route is not available on the MTC website.

The A1 is a rudimentary service. What is more, the MTC has ensured that not much is not known about its availability to the arriving passengers at Chennai Central.

Contrast this kind of service with that of the BMTC in Bangalore. There is a frequency of 20 minutes, and I tried this out on October 18 on the Electronic City – BIAL route. It worked well. There are bus services from the airport to several other areas too in Bangalore, involving a tariff of Rs. 125 to Rs. 150, depending upon where you want to go (and the ride is one hour-plus at high speed, indicating the distance involved). It is also fairly frequent, at one every 20 minutes. You can board the bus at the major regular BMTC stops en route.

From the bus bay to the entrance to the terminals is a short walk, via this canopy.

It may be argued that the Chennai service is far cheaper with an advertised fare of Rs. 25, but that alone does not make it successful. For one thing, passengers are not told about the buses being available right outside the Chennai Central concourse, and the frequency is poor. The crew is unhelpful when it comes to obtaining information about the service.

But things could be a lot different, if Chennai learned from Bangalore. Look at the map of the city, and you immediately notice the thick life-giving arterial roads in deep yellow, that radiate from the ‘heart’ of the city, the traditional Georgetown. There are Anna Salai, Poonamallee High Road, Thiruvanmiyur road along the beach, and growing in importance, the Old Mahabalipuram Road (IT corridor) and State Highway connecting Mount and Poonamallee (SH 113) which is a direct link from the airport. Of course there is also the Jawaharlal Nehru (Inner Ring) Road, which touches many residential localities, and forms a wide arc from North to South Chennai.

Note the road alignments in thick yellow, which are the arteries

It is obvious that if good quality modern bus services could be operated along these arteries, they would cover the bulk of the distance from the airport to the inner city, and to the Central/Egmore railway stations (which are in close proximity); the services will also provide valuable choice to the city commuter en route. The demand for such service is strong, but MTC apparently has other priorities. It is interested only in high-demand routes with disproportionate density of demand, rather than normal service provision.

Is this because there is a tacit understanding to create a bottleneck in the inner city? With its high density, it gives the autorickshaws and call-taxis a straight advantage. The lack of expansion of the service in Chennai Central and the Airport certainly indicate this kind of design.

The DMK Government has been trying to use its clout within the UPA for JNNURM funds to augment metropolitan bus services, but in implementing its transport schemes, it has been displaying the worst pre-modern era arrogance. The attitude of the MTC seems to confirm what many believe – that the bus service is only to be used as a tool to maintain a hold on urban life and mobility of the masses, and as a weapon — through labour protests — whenever it suits the Government politically.

The Government of India should STOP funding the MTC until it reverses course and takes up fundamental reform of the Chennai bus system.

Student Rush: $26.50/Premiere Circle, Row BB

2.5 stars/4

The Manhattan Theater Club opened their latest Broadway season with a revival of the George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber showbiz comedy, The Royal Family, which was originally produced on Broadway in 1927. For an 80-year old comedy, MTC’s revival is only occasionally stale for its runtime of three hours; for the most part it is delightful, fun, and made for an enjoyable afternoon at the theatre. While it was certainly be nice to see more daring work from Broadway’s nonprofits, The Royal Family is sure to please MTC’s subscriber base, and is a much more appealing work to revive than Roundabout’s Bye Bye Birdie.

The Royal Family, a spoof on the Barrymore dynasty, is a parlor comedy centered around the fictional Cavendish family, a family of actors who do not seem to grasp, or care to understand, a life outside of the spotlight. Broadway legend Rosemary Harris plays the family matriarch, Rosemary, with a perfectly timed dry humor and infinite grace. Harris is an absolute delight to watch, and the octogenarian actress holds the show on her back. Jan Maxwell plays the leading role of aging ingenue Julie Cavendish. Maxwell shines in the role, and excels at making Julie both over-the-top and down-to-earth often at the same time. John Glover, Tony Roberts, and Reg Rogers are all great supporting men, who balance milking their best moments while never stealing the spotlight from the leading ladies. Ana Gasteyer as the sister-in-law Kitty, is the only cast member who detracts from the proceedings. Her characterization plays more as hammy sketch comedy than the tame 1920’s comedy she is in. She is not on the same plane as the other actors, and seems to be acting in a totally different show.

Director Doug Hughes does a wonderful job at bringing the comedy to life, and with the exception of Gasteyer, the cast works together beautifully. The only real problem seems to be the pacing in the beginning, which ebbs between sharp and painfully slow. However, by the middle of the second act, the cast finds their footing, and Act III becomes a brilliant ride. The scenic design by John Lee Beatty is gorgeous, and slyly matches the interior of the theatre itself, helping to bring the audience into the 2-floor penthouse apartment. Catherine Zuber’s costumes complement the show well, and help create the wonderful visual element that helps this production pop.

The Royal Family is at its worst moments slightly slow, however, the wonderful comic moments that the cast bring to life are certainly worth the few yawns.

The Royal Family plays at the Samuel J. Freidman Theater at 261 W 47th Street. Student rush tickets are $26.50 and may be purchased at the box office upon opening on the day of the performance.
