After my post on ‘which engg branch between ECE/CSE has better prospects’, my mailbox was deluged with queries from parents and students alike. One query I am picking up for this post is- Does it make sense to do MS (masters degree) from USA after doing B.Tech from one of the top institute in India?

This is such a subjective issue that no one can guide us better than ourselves since it boils down to the priorities of life. Therefore, I asked the person following five questions before I could give a proper guidance to the student. Q1: Is money an important factor in your life? Q2: Are you truly interested in doing masters? Q3: Can you fund your education in US? Q4: Do you have good academics ( i.e. good CGPA >8 & GRE ~1350) to get in top 20 Tech colleges in US (even better 10 top colleges). Q5: Can you adapt to US culture & tolerate minor racial profiling (this question inspired by bollywood movies, NewYork and My Name is Khan).

‘Just do it’ I replied when the answers to above queries came in affirmative from the concerned student. The ‘Thank you’ note followed from the obliged person asking how I could make this difficult decision look so simple.

I would list down few things to support this decision.

1) Post graduate degrees fetch more money than BTech degree. If the Masters is done from India, the person will probably get 1 or 2 lac more than a UG degree holder. However if the degree is MS from US, the person can get about double of what a non- masters will get in India (in case he/she) decides to come back to India. I have seen numerous people in corporate India cribbing about the fact that they are paid half the salary of MS from US while doing similar profile jobs.

2) I can personally vouch for the fact that US exposure does count a lot- that too-lifelong on you resume. I have worked on many projects in different countries but found recruiters/visitors/friends do come back on that 2 years of work I have done in US, shying away from asking a single thing about the similar work done in Saudi Arabia. Someone who has stayed in India all his life is considered to have less useful life experience (sorry for being so rude- but it is a FACT of corporate culture nourished in western values).

3) Doing MTech from India when you are already from a top institute already is not a sensible choice (including from IITs and everyone knows what they are called in IITs- matka!- sorry if I hurt someone’s feeling). Someone who has done BTech from xyz college could think about MTech from IITs, just to get a tag.

4) Make sure MS is done in one of the top 20 colleges. The top colleges are looking for GRE scores in the range of V-525+, Q-750+,A- 720+ for Computer Sci. My frank advice is that MS from US is really meant for serious students. The US has kept 20,000 H1B visas for persons doing MS and PhD from US univ making it much easier to get jobs after MS.

5) At the end of the day, it is expertise and specialization that add value to the company engaged in cutting-edge technology on which they are so dependent. Indian companies perceive that MS from US hold a value proposition for them because of the quality of education and R&D at post-graduate level (India does have some good UG tech colleges and US univ are after these graduates for doing MS/PhD).

Comments are welcome.

While forms of social media may have been in existence for the past 30 years, its parameters are still loosely defined. @BrettBorders of socialmediarockstar.com gives an informative history of digital media’s trajectory, from phone phreaking and codelines to Tweetup-like gatherings called 2600 Meetings where techies could meet and discuss current events and best practices in the tech world. Since those first early days we’ve taken great pains to improve upon the original forms of digital bulletin boards (now we have Craigslist), instant messenger applications (do you seriously still use AOL Instant Messenger?) and file sharing (Napster who?) with the birth of social networking/media mammoths like Facebook, Twitter, iTunes and other sites and applications with mass appeal. Relentless coverage of countless new social sites has infiltrated the three spheres of life – work, home and play – like the Herpes of technology. The act of sharing, be it music, photos or data, through virtual communities seems to tie together all that falls under the banner of this meteoric trend. But what seems to be heavily trending these days is the act of sharing too much information on these sites. Does social media’s constant drive to share eradicate the line where personal boundaries would have physically occurred?

Case in point, @UrbanDaddy recently featured the launch of an appalling new Web Site describing it with the tag line, “Digital notches for your online belt.” If you’ve ever wondered what you get when you cross Google Maps with brazen blow-hards and Tweet-like functionality, look no further than ijustmadelove.com, a site where you can share your mind-blowing sexcapades (who, what, when and where) with digital voyeurs all too willing to listen. Another example: a friend on Facebook has recently been gracing the Statusphere with details of her impending divorce to the point where I’ve started suffering from chronic News bleeds. Another girl I reconnected with gave me all-too-candid details about how her recent pregnancy was a mistake. Need I remind you of the countless politicians’ children whose underage drinking and recreational drug use habits have been ousted – by their own admission – on Facebook or Myspace? Being that I only joined Facebook last year, was it always this way?

A little research shows that social media may have taken a drastic turn when Myspace first allowed teenagers to begin using its services is 2004. A year later, Facebook began allowing folks of all email types, not just university conventions, to join the site, including high school students and working professionals. I’d be willing to bet that it’s somewhere between 2004-05 that social media began its rapid descent into the underbelly of public narcissism. Not because teenagers come with plenty of viruses but because what does a typical 15 year-old have to say that’s worth mass promulgation?

I’m not sh*tting on social media (says the girl who frequently contributes to her company blog). Resistance to that effort is futile – entire hand-held devices and even cars have been designed for social media to operate at optimal functionality, @BenMezrich has even written an entire book (soon-to-be big screen movie) paying homage to the history of Facebook’s development. But what I am looking for is more meaningful ways to utilize these powerful tools – because your half-nude photos from your half-*ss, aspiring modeling career coupled with who you were boinkin’ last night while you worried about who was getting custody of your kid ain’t cutting for me.

It all began when I bought my boyfriend the Nintendo Wii for his birthday. When purchasing this vide

It all began when I bought my boyfriend the Nintendo Wii for his birthday. When purchasing this video game system, I had no intention of playing anything but a match of interactive tennis once in a blue moon. Well, I was wrong.

I admit, back in the day, I was an awesome Nintendo player. I’m talking old school Mario and Duck Hunt where, on sick days from school, I’d save the princess time after time. But alas, I grew up and left my school girl Mario days behind.

At some point, I am sure I mentioned my childhood love for Mario to my boyfriend, but I was completely shocked when he surprised me with Super Paper Mario for the Wii. To be honest, at first I wasn’t really into the idea of playing a video game, even if it was Mario. I’ve seen the type of girls who work at Game Stop and they’re definitely not like me (no offense, but the new XBOX Call of Duty game doesn’t quite excite me like a new pair of shoes!). I didn’t want to be a labeled a video game nerd, but after some contemplation, I caved and gave it a trial run. It couldn’t hurt, right?

After getting over the initial 2-D/3-D quality and updated character visuals, I fell right back into my childhood days of collecting hidden coins, jumping on the evil turtles and, of course, stocking up on ‘extra lives’ or as they call it in Super Paper Mario, ‘extra HP’. It’s just like old school Mario, but better…much better!

Super Paper Mario is divided into 32 levels within 8 chapters, each one bringing you closer to saving the universe. Forget saving the Princess in the dungeon…this is the real deal with multiple ‘bad guys’ and endless treasures to uncover. The most unique part of Super Paper Mario is that over time you acquire additional characters and pixis to aid you in your quest to beat the game. It keeps you intrigued because you’re constantly strategizing on how you can beat each level and move on to the next. What’s interesting about this game is how it can provide both children and adults with entertainment; tailoring the game to meet their reflective needs and intellects. The game is witty; incorporating a ton of adult humor that would fly right over a kid’s head. I’m constantly finding myself thinking, “Did they really just write that!?”

Now, listen, don’t get me wrong. I don’t recommend rushing to the store and buying Super Paper Mario. However, if you did enjoy playing Mario when you were younger and are looking for a fun, yet challenging, activity, this game can help bring out your inner child and give your brain a workout! Oh and the best part? Back in the day when you couldn’t google ‘game spoilers’, you were on your own to beat each level. Today, a ton of websites exist to offer up secret codes and hints for each chapter of the game (and yes, I know this because I’ve done it…I cheat…go ahead Game Stop girl, judge me).

I guess you never know what part of your childhood will follow you to adulthood….better watch out for those skeletons in the closet!

Happy Labor Day to all. It’s an especially fun one for me since I’ve finally completed a project on the 2001 530. But it took an incredible amount of time, I started this project at the beginning of the summer. Here then is the story.

I have wanted to freshen up the 530 bumpers for a while. As described in previous posts, the previous owner had been easy on the car driving-wise but was neglectful in cosmetic matters. There were some dings and scratches on the bumpers, primarily on the rear. And BMW made a M Technic version bumper for my model car, which came stock on the 2003 540i. This bumper just plain looks better. It is sometimes called the “M5 bumper,” but that’s incorrect, the M5 and the M Technic bumpers are different.

M Technic Aero Kit

As usual with the aftermarket, there was a plethora of choices to weed through. There are many good quality replica kits at there, as well as original equipment (OE) parts. Luckily I was able as usual to tap the wisdom of the crowd via the bimmerfest.com and bimmerforum.com online communities. These owners usually have no shortage of valuable info and strong opinions on which way to go with most any project. Complicating my choice somewhat was my car has park distance control (PDC), which is not an option I would have chosen but one I’ve come to appreciate. There are four sensors in both the front and rear bumpers, and many of the replica kits didn’t accommodate this feature.

I decided to go with the OE BMW kit, for the PDC and the reason I wanted everything to be perfect. Even a small fit problem with a replica kit would bug me, and I figured the build quality would be better. I knew Bavarian Auto sold the OE kit, and they advertised that they matched competitor pricing. I called, and pointed out that Bekkers had a lower price for the same OE kit. BavAuto matched it, and I started getting psyched to get this done. But the adventure was just beginning.

I ordered the kit on June 25th. Part of my ordered shipped right away — some bumper strips and the new projector fog lights. Unfortunately, the main kit was out of stock, and they were sending to GERMANY for it. I wasn’t happy they didn’t tell me this over the phone when I ordered, but figured I’d stay the course. So on July 22nd, the kit is shipped to my body shop (Professional Auto Body in Alexandria, VA) and I drop the car off.

But no! The shop calls to tell me the non-PDC bumper has been sent, with no rear bumper!? I’m pretty frustrated at this point, have to ship the bumper back, and convince customer service the rear was never sent at all. To BavAuto’s credit, they admitted the error and processed a full refund for me, minus the fogs that I kept. But still no bumpers. So I go back to Bekkers.

Call up, order the bumpers but by now wondering what will happen next. Sure enough, Bekkers calls me back a couple of hours later to say they have the front bumper for a car with PDC AND Headlight washers, which my car doesn’t have. Told me I could have the shop fill the holes in where the washers would go, no problem. No way Jose — I’m paying the $$ for OE, everything should be perfect. To Bekkers credit, they did call me with the explanation and after I said no they never processed the order. But I was still dead in the water re bumpers.

Usually dealers are the last place to go for a good price, but at this point I figured I had no other course. I remembered a few years back Pacific BMW in Glendale, CA had aggressively marketed themselves for BMW parts, then pulled back for some reason. I called, and after a few transfers got to the right person, Mark Flores. He found me a Mtech kit with PDC, surprisingly at a lower price than what I paid before.

I wasn’t quite home free — the kit was missing one important piece for the rear, and the bumper strips had to have two additional holes cut into them by the shop. But Mark is going to credit me the cost of the piece I had to buy locally, as soon as I scan my receipt and send to him. Definitely looks like Pacific has decided again to market themselves as a source for OE parts. And they are doing it via Facebook — check out Pacific’s page here.

Next, a new muffler. After getting the new Mtech bumper with the left side cut-out for an exhaust tip, I needed to replace my old muffler. The old one was big, rusty and curved straight down, behind the bumper. Magnaflow had some nice looking ones at very fair prices, and after some online forum research decided on the 14829, big fat single tip design that fit perfectly. Had to go to a Meineke shop on Rt. 1 south of the Walmart to get it done, since the job required some custom welding. Nice job and pretty quick, too.

Finally, I had to do something about the front place. Unfortunately VA is one of the misguided states that require a front plate — what a threat to freedom! I didn’t spend all that money on my front bumper to then drill some big holes in it for a bulky license bracket. The solution came from Skenedesign, thin brackets that require only two 1/8 inch holes underneath the bumper. The plate doesn’t even touch the front bumper surface.

So there’s the saga. It’s done — but I didn’t think it would take all summer! Check it some pics below. If you’re a BMW owner thinking of going down this road, please contact me directly. I left out some arcane details in the interest of clarity.

Now, what should I do for the M3…

Engineering as a career option is finalized at a stage when the kids are not mature enough to decide

Engineering as a career option is finalized at a stage when the kids are not mature enough to decide. Usually, their career choice is based on the preference of their parents, and obviously those giving the advice are not engineers themselves, nor do they have the entire experience of engineering as a profession. It is quite obvious that while opting for a profession, children themselves are not aware of what engineering as a career is all about.

In the field of engineering, vision and skills know no boundaries. Students have to accept challenges as opportunities to prove themselves. For instance, being an aerospace engineer, you might get a chance of working on cryogenic technology which is highly required for the country’s advancement in the space research field or being a civil engineer, you may get an opportunity to make earthquake resistant houses. Likewise, being an electrical engineer, you might have an opportunity to develop superconductors and so on.

There are students who appear for GATE, so as to open avenues for themselves, for getting admission in M.Tech. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, acts as the gateway to get admission in M.Tech, M.Arch and other Masters Degree programmes. A masters Degree in Engineering offers an entire new horizon to the students, as they can opt to the path of research and development.

Rewarding profession

As a student you have to be open to all these opportunities to make way in the arena of top-class engineers. Similarly, all the streams of engineering offer so many opportunities where creativity and ingenuity act as the tools to alleviate the challenges and come out as the winner. Working as an engineer will offer job satisfaction and most importantly, the job is subjected to a lot of growth. After all, everyone has to spend a large part of life at work station and you need to deliver contentment and satisfaction so as to grow in a better way.

Engineering offers a varied array of career possibilities. From the design of fighter planes to boring holes in earth in search of petrochemicals to make way to Mars, Engineers definitely play an important role in success of human story. Working as an engineer requires intelligence and creativity which in turn requires the students to utilize their mental faculties as compared to professions where practice helps in performing the job. Engineering is about making things work, yes, it may seem to be challenging, but then it’s the engineers who make it possible in an efficient and effective way.

After pursuing engineering, all engineering students stand at the crossroad of making a decisive cho

After pursuing engineering, all engineering students stand at the crossroad of making a decisive choice so as to explore interesting avenues as a choice for their careers. A majority of people opt for mainly two things that are management or M.Tech. With the current economic scenario of the India, there are various colleges that are not able to give 100% placement to their students. This results in candidates making a tough choice between management and M.Tech. In order to get admission in M.Tech the examination that holds significant importance on national as well as international level is GATE.

So, if you are the one seeking admission in post-graduation programmes in reputed engineering colleges and institutes in India, you need to crack GATE. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), is an All-India examination that holds high significant and is conducted in eight zones across India by the GATE committee. The main objective of GATE test is to identify the quality of students and assess their potential to continue higher education. By conducting GATE, it becomes easy to evaluate the students on the required skill scale and consistency to pursue higher studies in the field of engineering.

With the cut-throat competition, even those who save more than 85% in the GATE examination, lag behind in getting admissions into the reckoned institutions such as NITs and IITs. The questions of GATE are usually the derivation of fundamentals and preparation of GATE is an ongoing process and is supposed to take place in varied stages. Prepare your best with the fundamentals and then test yourself those fundamentals.

There are students who prepare at home with the number of book options available in the market today. Then there are few aspirants who opt for correspondence coaching courses. A coaching material cannot be assessed until one goes through the same word by word. Hence GATE aspirants can go by some tips of their seniors.

Those who are getting regular classroom coaching need to check whether the institute suits their requirement or not by considering some of the following parameters:

• Distinct Study Material- Now-a-days all the coaching institutes offer study material for assistance in studies. But if this material simply copy paste or re-write of materials taken from other books then these hold minimal importance. In comparison to all this, there are several standard books on each subject by good authors which can make your study enjoyable as well as interesting.

• Compilation of quality books- While studying theory, conceptualization and building application capabilities, and one needs good collection of books, which can really put our brain on exercise. Ensure that your coaching institute has a collection of good and informative books.

• Flexibility- There are aspirants who have slow or fast grasping power than the average. In such cases, it is better to ascertain the model that suits your needs and provide enough guidance to you at the same time.

• Tests and Evaluation Model- Ensure and track your progress through a set of tests and evaluation as this is the most crucial part of the preparation. This is the main area where the students fail due to lack of essential test and evaluation material.
Gateprep is specially designed for GATE aspirants. It aims to facilitate engineering graduates or those perusing their B Sc eventually getting M Tech degrees from one of the premier institution of the country like the IITs, IISc & Tata Institute. It is one of the premier interactive educational website solving students examination related queries.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) — one of the new IITs set up last year — is planning to design courses with a lot of interplay between various streams. It will establish schools or departments and bring three or more domains under one umbrella, according to UB Desai, the new director who took charge last week. He was earlier a faculty member at IIT Bombay.

The institute plans to admit 120 students this July in three streams. The faculty will continue to come from IIT Chennai even as it plans to induct some faculty shortly from the many applications that it received. IIT-H is also keen to recruit retired IIT faculty settled in and around Hyderabad to become self sufficient by 2010. Research will be a key focus area for IIT-H, Desai said, adding that about 35 M.Techs will be admitted this July. The institute also plans to admit about 10-15 PhDs. Last year, it admitted 11 research scholars. The research areas will span across computer science, chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering streams. “Faculty research will be promoted in a big way,” said Desai.

IIT-H admitted 111 students last year and majority of them hailed from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala. At present, the institute is offering B.Tech courses in electrical, mechanical and computer science streams. The library, which now has text-book material in about 1,000 titles, would add a fully functional reference library with subscriptions to online journals by July.

If you wish to know only about the procedure for obtaining the counselling form just skip the following paragraph and read the Q-A following it .

I was surprised and shocked when my friend called up and told me that the counselling forms for TANCET MBA 2009 is being issued .
Thinking that i have overlooked the Anna Universitys advertisement in newspapers , i had a look over their (not well designed) website (www.annauniv.edu) and found no trace of related notifications . Still surprised by an irresponsible or a lazy act of a top institute in India , i dropped into the college the next day (12th June 2009) . I walked up straight to the enquiry , where ,at first, the response was not well . As a result , i had to walk to the other end of the campus , The Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE),under the hot sun . There i wasnt able to find any counters/notifications for issuing the forms . The receptionists in all the offices there were missing !! So i had to walk all the way to the enquiry counter at the other end of the college and enquire the details again. This time , the person over there at the counter apologised for the inconvenience caused and answered all my queries politely. All he did was to send me back to the other end again !! And i did go !!! after an hour of search , by chance (!) , i came across the person who was issuing the counselling forms .He was sitting in a not so easily seen place and there was not much crowd . No-where in this “adventurous travel ” did i find any directions or procedure or any information posted in campus about the counselling form being issued . Just imagine from the number and type of comments on this post , how informative is the Anna university. I dont think they even have a helpline number ! In Anna university ,everything is a suspense. What follows is a set of answers to your FAQs . I cant guarantee the accuracy of the information presented here and i cant be held liable for the same .

FAQs

It seems that a separate form would be issued ten days later for attending the counselling to seek admission in Anna University.

What is the cost of the counselling form ?

Currently , this is a major issue thats in the court . Though the affliated colleges admit you under management quota without a TANCET test score , i dont recommend you to take a risk this way. If you havent written the TANCET exam , then join any Deemed University . I have also received an information that Jeppiar Engineering College has planned to conduct a Common Entrance Test ( CET ) for admission into Anna University affliated colleges , under managment quota . So do watch out for any such announcements and comment in this page for the benefit of others .

Looks like , counselling for MBA/ME/MTech would be conducted in Coimbatore .

When do the counsellings start ?

I have no idea , but on observing the current situation , i expect it to start in a months time as they are currently busy in B.E admissions(business !)

I was able to gather this information in 4 hours .If there is any mistake in the information provided here , please comment on this page . Do pass on the information to your friends so that they may benefit .

The launch of four new electronic applications have largely narrowed the gap between we humans and t

The launch of four new electronic applications have largely narrowed the gap between we humans and them animals. Computer science’s knack for whimsical creativity has resulted in four notables that have recently gained a lot of attention.

Mail Goggles: Google’s email application, GMAIL, now offers a feature that will allow you to “stop sending mail that you will later regret.” Once enabled, the goggles verify whether or not you really want to send that late-night, weekend email by asking a series of five, simple mathematical questions (i.e. 69-38, 37+19, 2×5, etc…). If all answered correctly, your email is free to be on its way.

Email Addict: another email feature offered by GMAIL. Designed for those with addictive personalities, Email Addict allows the user a short period of R&R with the simple click of the “Take a Break” button; upon pressing, your computer screen goes blank and a message reading, “Break time! Take a walk, get some real work done, or have a snack. We’ll be back in 14 minutes!” appears on your screen.

Self Control: Steve Lambert, a Brooklyn-based developer, designed a Mac-only application allowing users to block any chosen website for a specified amount of time; and unless you’re a nerd who is well-versed in detailed computer anatomy, there’s no undoing this feature once enabled.

Bad Decision Blocker: iPhone users can thank Apple for supplying us the self-control needed to avoid drunken correspondence with exes, superiors, parents and any other pre-selected contacts specified for up to one week.

While no one can deny the entertainment value or appreciate the vast amount of work that goes into making such creations, it’s a rather unfortunate message that we as a society, in our acceptance and use of such technologies, are sending. As the most highly evolved of the Animal Kingdom, our most defining characteristic – which makes us superior to all other animals – is our ability to reason and subsequently our volition. All other creatures live their daily existence out of rote and limited intelligence. Can human behavior really be governed by binary code? Even if so, would that be enough? No. A quick visit to a Google Lab chat regarding the Email Addict application is seasoned with users asking for Google to take measures that would effectively make the application more restrictive: “This is a very helpful lab but is there a way to make so that you can’t open a new internet window and log on while the other page is taking a break? I find that I am on email to much and I would like to be able to completely stop me from getting on when I am supposed to be doing homework…” Other requests range from having mail arrive periodically throughout the day instead of real-time to Google granting or denying email access based on individual, usage statistics.

I’m not dogging the gift or contributions of electronic technologies. At best they’ve been used to extend life past the point where death may have naturally occurred; at worst, it’s been useful for automating thoughtless, menial tasks. But in the end, responsibility for our behavior rests with us alone. Until the days of I Robot are here, electronic devices of any sort will not be able to prevent us from acting on our impulses, be they sending nasty texts to an ex, a cheeky email to your micro-managing boss who does not allow for coffee breaks or use of personal time, or in the worst cases, violent and heinous crimes (think Melissa Huckaby/Sandra Cantu). So when you don’t want to do something that you know is not right… Don’t! You’re more than strong enough. Believe that.

Gate GATEway to a high-tech career It is literally a gateway to higher education and a promising car

Gate GATEway to a high-tech career It is literally a gateway to higher education and a promising career in engineering. Eligibility criteria A master’s degree in any branch of science or M.Sc. in Mathematics. Students in the final or pre-final year of these programmes are also eligible. A bachelor’s degree in engineering/technology/architecture/pharmacy would also suffice. Candidates in the final or pre-final year may also apply.

Candidates in the second year or above of the B.Sc. four-year Integrated Master’s Degree Programme, or in the third year (or above) of the five-year Integrated Master’s Degree Programme in engineering/technology. Candidates with professional qualification equivalent to BE/B.Tech. through a UPSC/AICTE-recognised examination. GATE exam The examination is a single paper of three-hour duration of the objective type.

Negative marking is adopted for some questions in the paper. The results of qualifying candidates will be ranked on an all-India basis and indicate a percentile score. A percentile score of 99 means one is in the top one per cent category of the candidates who appeared for GATE. Candidates who get less than 70 percentile get no score card. GATE scores are valid for 2 years. One can reappear for the GATE exam if one is not satisfied with the earlier score. The new score (if better than the old one) will be used for admission.

Students have to apply to individual institutes and get application forms after the GATE results are out. M.Tech. course admission details are advertised in leading newspapers from April 1 till July end. However, some institutes do not advertise and students should approach them directly for the forms. The concerned institute may conduct a written test and/or interview for admission. Students of M.Tech. are paid scholarships by the Government of India for the entire 18-month period. Importance of coaching Dr. Gokhale, who had been secretary, GATE examinations for 1997-98, notes that the examination is widely recognised in industrial and academic circles.

He observes there were many coaching Institutes in cities like Hyderabad and Chennai.Coaching was necessary, according to a former principal of a private engineering college. “The Chemical Engineering Department at the Government Engineering College, Kozhikode, offers coaching to students now as a small initiative,” says Prof. V.K. Sasikumar, Head, Chemical Engineering Department, Government Engineering College, West Hill, Kozhikode. However, experts advocate preparing for GATE by practising the old question papers following the time limits strictly, since time management in GATE is also crucial.

Also practising the questions helps one to familiarise oneself with the GATE exam pattern. Some institutes have recently started conducting separate written tests or interviews or both for PG admissions, apart from considering GATE scores. Importance of PGDr.Gokhale observes that even a student who has completed B.Tech. at a State engineering college can look forward to doing M.Tech. in a more reputed institute like an IIT or NIT by taking GATE and thus increase his value in the job market.

Prof. R. Sreedharan, who has been monitoring admissions, including M.Tech., at NIT-C over the years, observes that some of the students of self-financing engineering colleges outside Kerala try to get into an IIT or NIT by cracking GATE. R&D institutions Prof. Sasikumar says that with India becoming the hub of research and development (R&D) activities and many companies abroad outsourcing these activities to Indian research institutions like CSIR, M.Tech. students have a big chance to grab more opportunities in the research sector where a PG degree carries weight.

Dr.Gokhale points out that after the 9\11 attacks in the U.S., a slump in the IT market had re-oriented the engineering students towards higher studies. With opportunities galore in the R&D and other sectors, taking the GATE is increasingly becoming the preferred option for students. Unlike their seniors who kept going back to academics after a few years’ work, present-day students prefer to complete higher studies at a younger age as they set for themselves ambitious career goals. The next GATE exam is on,

We reached IISc (or TATA institute, as it is locally called) at about 7.30am. We were not having the right knowledge of how much time will it take to reach IISc. So we left the rest house at 7am.

The test was supposed to start at 9am. Rohan was whiling away with the newspaper. Then i too got involved in it. We then went for a walk in the IISc campus(actually jungle).

Ok. Back to topic.
About the TEST: The test started at 9.15am. It was 1.5 hr test. To our surprise the test was SUBJECTIVE as against OBJECTIVE as mentioned in the call letter. Main tabhi samajh gaya ki ‘mushkil hai boss’.

The Qs were of 1M & 2M like GATE but subjective. I solved some of them. It was ok-ok. I was on the boundary(may or may not be called for interview). The results were out at 7pm. I called my friends in Mumbai to check out.

I got selected for interview.

About interview: There were 3 Interveiwers. They asked mainly about my BE project. Then went deep into it. Asked some Qs on controllers (PI) as i used stepper motors & the proj involved a path tracing.
How to correct the position of the robot if it gets drifted from its path?
Which type will u use, accumulator or gain?
Write some eqns & explain.
What’ll the robo do if there is intersection in the path?
Then gave an eg & asked how the particular path will be followed.

Couldn’t do the controller part well. Rest was ok.

Then 1 of them asked about very simple basics of vlsi which i answered. Then my time (20min sharp) got over.

So overall it was…hmm… ok…actually, bad.

I m not hoping at all.

The NIIT University is built on four core principles which, we believe, will make it unique. The sin

The NIIT University is built on four core principles which, we believe, will make it unique. The singular objective behind this is to effectively implement them in creating the entire university so that students who graduate experience a visible difference between the point they entered the Neemrana campus and the point at which they emerge.

And we believe, too, that this is what will be valued by the Industry.

1The first of these is that the University will be Industry–Linked. This is being implemented through a very close connection between Industry and the University in developing the curriculum. The second activity is that the under-graduate as well as post-graduate students would spend a full six-month semester undertaking industry practice or internship in the Masters program. The third kind of activity would be deep–engagement of industry professionals in teaching at the University – either by visiting or through the use of technology like the Synchronous Learning technology that is deployed at NIIT’s Imperia classrooms. And the fourth, of course is a very deep engagement of Industry in the recruitment and placement process of passing graduates.

2The second core principle is Technology-Based. This is where the 27 years of experience of NIIT Ltd, its expertise and knowledge that has been created in computer education would be harnessed for the benefit of the University – making it a trend-setter in the use of science and technology in the entire teaching–learning process; as well as the process of managing education.

3The third core principle is Research-Driven; and this goes well beyond having exceptionally good laboratories. It starts, in fact, with the principle that right in the first year of the Bachelor’s degree program, students will be educated so that a research mind-set is built into their way of studying. For example, rather than their preparing or finding answers to the known questions, they would perhaps focus on looking for new questions; or the fact that if they were to do a BTech project, we would encourage the involvement and interaction of a group of student-doctorates from the PhD program or the Masters program who would participate along with them.

4And finally the fourth core principle is what we call Seamlessness. Seamlessness has many many dimensions – starting from the fact that life would be multi-disciplinary and students would have free choice to move between different electives and streams. Seamlessness also means that projects would be done by groups not just across disciplines but also across different levels including PhD, Masters and BTech students working collaboratively. It also shows up in the way the campus is laid out with the central pedestrian spine that binds the residential, the academic areas and the staff areas in a very seamless fashion. Seamless also is the manner in which the built part of the campus integrates very beautifully with the hillocks on the side which run all along the 100 acre area of the campus.

These, then, are the four cornerstones of the NIIT University – and it is not just philosophy but is already in practice.

One of the key reasons for setting up this forum was to initiate dialogue and keep you all abreast with all the happenings at the University. For the same reason, we are introducing the “Status Update” series – where we will keep our prospective students, parents and the entire NIIT University community involved and informed about the current status and happenings at the university front.

As you probably know, the University campus is located in the foothills of the Aravali range, close to the historic Neemrana fort. The proposed NIIT University falls under the aegis of the Government of Rajasthan Education (Gr-4) Department Guidelines for the Establishment of Private Universities by Separate Act. A Letter of Intent (LOI) to this effect from the Government of Rajasthan was received vide letter No. F 3 (24) Edu. IV / 2005 dated July 10, 2008. The necessary compliance report has been filed with the authorities of the Government of Rajasthan after addressing all requirements stipulated in the aforesaid LOI.

The Gr-4 plays an important role in bringing about the quantitative and qualitative improvement in the higher education in the State. They help in obtaining development grants from the U.G.C. and in providing grants for organization of the academic conferences and seminars.

To give you an update on the University infrastructure, two of the academic blocks and hostels are near completion thereby making us ready for the pioneering batch of students in the B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD programs offered by the university.

A point of personal pride is our broad-based admissions process, which is designed to take into consideration multiple performances and not just a single exam.

Keeping in mind our policy of seamless integration, the admission for the M.Tech program is based on public examinations, the first degree program, GATE / NET, an online test and personal interview by a panel of experts.

The PhD program on the other hand, besides taking into account previous academic performance, also focuses on an individual’s research capabilities.
