Me: LaRok tiered garden dress, Michael: H&M pink shirt, my dad’s tie, my dad’s sports jacket, Silence & Noise supertight black jeans, fresh yellow roses stolen from a vase.

We’re going to Lisbon tomorrow. What have I done today to prepare? A lipsmack of nothing except pick up my new glasses that have secret heart cut-outs, and eat lobster-tofu soup and french fries. I’m scared to go to Lisbon tomorrow and I’m scared to leave my family and I’m scared to go back to Iowa.

I read a little bit of The Book of Disquietude online to calm me.

To describe the universal is to describe what is common to all human souls and to all human experience–the broad sky, with day and night occurring in it and by it; the flowing of rivers, all with the same fresh and nunnish water; the vast waving mountains known as oceans, which hold the majesty of height in the secret of their depths; the fields, the seasons, houses, faces, gestures; clothes and smiles; love and wars; gods both finite and infinite; the formless Night, mother of the world’s origin; Fate, the intellectual monster that is everything…Describing these or any other universals, my soul speaks the primitive and divine language, the Adamic tongue that everyone understands. But what splintered, Babelish language would I use to describe the Santa Justa Lift, the Reims Cathedrale, the breeches worn by the Zouaves, or the way Portuguese is pronounced in the province of Trás-os-Montes?

I look forward to seeing the Santa Justa Lift, I wonder if we’ll hear how Portuguese is pronounced in Trás-os-Montes, there’s more I’m not even dimly aware of yet, this post is dedicated to Michael because sometimes he wears flowers in his hair, and he saved my house from burning down in gingery flames, and he introduced me to Pessoa and his aphorisms and his heteronyms and his obsession with what other people thought of him, and he told me about hypographia–when you can’t stop writing–and he convinced me to go to Portugal, and if there exists a splintered, Babelish language to describe all of the shivering, mysterious particulars of the world, I’m sure Michael would master it immediately.

Both photos taken at the Harvard Club this past summer, where my friend Victoria held her wedding reception. (Photo by MTT)

I would love to hear from anyone who has been to Lisbon/Portugal. Do you have recommendations for places to see and things to do and food to consume? I’m open to anything, from the sleazy to the cheesy, and I’d love to scout out some vintage clothing stores and bring home some European booty for my Etsy shop.

Had the absolute worst month of my life in November (which I won’t explain) and this month wasn’t much better until I won the Fifty-Fifty on Full Tilt last Wednesday for $10.8k. I played smart, aggressive poker and put everything I currently know to use to take it down, and it felt damn good. Running like a god helped, too, as I got lucky a few times when I had someone all-in and never got unlucky when I was all-in. That, along with having the balls to 5-bet from the big blind, is what brought my name to the top. And thanks to everyone who railed me (no homo); I appreciate the support.

Números:

Time period: 56 days (Nov. 3 – Dec. 28)

Events played (SnGs & MTTs): 1,569

Total profit (before split): $7,768 (lowest point: -$3.5k)

It’s definitely a relief to no longer have thousands of dollars of makeup looming over my head, and in January I’m going to try to avoid dipping into the negative like I always seem to do at the beginning of every month. As much as I’m beginning to hate SnGs, I plan on continuing to use profits from them to absorb the relentless MTT buy-ins which eat away at my bankroll in between final tables and big scores.

That’s all for now. Enjoy New Year’s!

BIG Question: Who is going to make your band truly great and get you where you rightly belong? Answe

BIG Question: Who is going to make your band truly great and get you where you rightly belong?

Answer below…

First, please go though this seven-question checklist and as long as you answer yes to all of them you’ll be fine.

Question 1: Do you have good songs?
Including…
Time to rehearse those good songs (regularly)
Time to book gigs, (and not just in the street you live) get to those gigs and play those good songs live.

Question 2: Can you communicate well?
Here is a small sample of people who you may need to communicate well with. Please feel free to make notes.

The band; People who like the band; People who are helping the band; Friends of the band; Fans of the band; Manager of the band; Promoters, and on the periphery a vast array of people who can assist the band to complete this questionnaire.

Question 3: Do you collectively have chemistry – do all of the members of a band add up to a giant great mass of greatness?
As Spock said “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one”
Translated. If you aren’t all pulling one way, for the collective good and looking after each other, with respect you are fucked!

Question 4: Do you have good looks and style?
Including, but in no particular order, good hair, Twitter fingers, Blog-ability, a love of fried chicken and cheap lager, big moustache (you know who you are!), sex appeal, charisma and a vacant stare.

Question 5: Do you have a powerful desire?
Also phrased as, how bad do you want it?

Including…
(a) Will you sleep in a van, telephone box or friendly police cell if you need to?

(b) Can you sponge off your girlfriends, for as long as they’ll have you and then move on to fried chicken in another part of town?

(c) Can you drop everything for an opportunity?

(d) Can you dig deep when you need to?

Question 6: Are you happy to…
Do a gig, then give out flyers with your web address on or tell someone to sign up to your mailing list, sell a CD or a 7″, stick a sticker in places you shouldn’t stick a sticker and finally talk to people about your question 1’s. If you are lucky, later you’ll get to show off your question 5, but don’t piss the fans off along the way.
You need them more than they need you and you never know, one of them might turn into a 5b.

Question 7: Do you understand facts?

E.g. iTunes has more than 10,000,000 tracks within it’s walls. Most of which don’t even sell one copy.
Great to be there but if SJ decides to dump music you’re gone.

MySpace is owned by Rupert Murdoch – yes that old music lover.
Use it please do, but don’t rely on it solely because if Newscorp decides to dump you you is dumped.

Facebook is owned by some bloke/corporation who pretends he listens.
See MySpace.

Xfactor is not about music.
Power Rangers.

Bread has loads of salt in it.
Toast is good…..crumpets are better.

BIG Answer: Obviously it’s you. Right?

This is not meant to be a lecture, although I guess it could read like one. The truth is there is so much competition out there that you just have to do more, be better than and be more flexible and creative than the rest.

You need to make your own story before anyone will read you.

Write, get better, play, write, get better, play, communicate, get up as early as possible, email people, tell them how good you are, ask them for opportunities, drop the cunts that use you, dump the dodgy promoters and then start again.

Please do:

Get a web domain of your own and collect data. Be nice to that data.

Use MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and the other social networking sites smartly while they are there because sure enough they’ll fuck you in the end.

Find good people to moan at you like: www.360degreemusic.com

Find great promoters like:.myspace.com/strollonnights

Read stuff like:

Music Think Tank: www.musicthinktank.com/

Lefsetz: www.lefsetz.com/

Seth Godin: http://sethgodin.typepad.com/

1000 true fans: www.kk.org/thetechnium/archives/2008/03/1000_true_fans.php

Add to this list and tell your mates.

Remember when Paula Radcliffe stopped for a piss?
You need to piss on the go in this world to get in front.

Be careful out there…

The air has been wretched the past few days. Michael thinks it smells like ‘diarrhea ice chips smashed into a ripped-open shitting asshole.” What if I told you he’s completely right? Before I left for Chicago, Michael took photos of some of my favorite finds from the last estate sale I went to. Like these sheer nylon gloves that go up to my elbow.

And these sheer nylon blouses that are all too big for me.

We went to the Writers’ House–home to my writing office/Etsy store studio, and also where I teach class, and also where the other fellows live/work. From the outside, the house looks like a Swiss chalet. The library on the first floor is full of dust and books no one wants, like old issues of N + 1 that I put down after reading one page.

Michael is a great photographer, but we only have a little camera that takes mediocre photos. In a few weeks, we’re getting a new camera, and after a day or two, I’ll probably scratch my nose and say, “I’m bored,” and Michael will probably learn on his own how to take photos and make great videos. Michael likes Tracey Emin monoprints, Louise Bourgeois sculptures, Louise Bourgeois pencil sketches, Egon Schiele paintings, Egon Schiele pencil sketches, and we both like Aase Berg, and I also like what he likes. Telling you that is like telling you nothing at all.

Tracey Emin monoprint, “I used to have such good imagination” from Zen Catharsis Claptrap

Louise Bourgeois sketch from www.kickingwind.net

Louise Bourgeois drawing from Drawing Rooms

Egon Schiele painting from Oo-de-Lally

We were both astounded when we heard Aase Berg’s poem, “In the Guinea Pig Cave” read out loud last year in Chicago. Michael writes poetry, sometimes radio plays, sometimes fragments, sometimes he thinks aphoristically, Factory Hollow Press is publishing a chapbook of his poems, when they do, I’ll read them and feel astounded, and when other people read them, they’ll either feel a great euphoric confusion or a great euphoric disgust or a great euphoric shock or a great euphoric astonishment and all are the same thing. He’s reading the short stories of Alice Sheldon/James Tiptree & I was reading her biography.

Michael has his own ideas. It was Michael’s idea to wrap the studded straps of these shoes around my ankles instead of criss-crossing them like I usually do.

We tried to break into the little chapel-shack behind the Writers’ House.

Like most of my endeavors, I didn’t try very hard and lost interest immediately.

What is EFT? Is tapping a fancy dance step? Nope it is neither but it is a way to change your energy flow. By lightly tapping on certain meridian points you can easily eliminate negative emotions. We are learning that hate, anger, forgiveness is way that illness can attack your body. By letting go of these emotions you are also letting go of future illness, pain and a life of struggle. There are so many documented case studies on EFT and if you haven’t heard of it yet, you will be. This is an easy self help procedure to change creatively. Yes, it is way out of the box for most people but it is am amazing process. I will be talking more about it and getting the information out there for all to review.

Antes o después, estarás obligado a volverte activo.

It’s just not worth the chips…

It’s been a bit of an up and down time at the tables over the past couple of days but I can’t really complain as variance is all part of poker, especially tournament poker.

As I’ve not played any MTTs for a while, I decided to enter a €1 MTT that had 555 runners in total. I never really got above my starting stack and busted in 273/555 after the third or fourth level.

Not really having time to play a bunch of MTTs I started to register for some €5.25 HUSNG and managed to fit in five before hitting the hay for the night, winning four of them was a nice way toget off the ground. However, the powers that be have a funny sense of humour and thought it would be funny to make me run like death in last night’s session.

I knew if was going to be a long night when I managed to get my money in as an 85.6% favourite only for villain to go runner-runner full house on me. I kept on battling but it was obvious I was fighting a losing battle when I ran TPTK into bottom set and then twice ran middle pairs into Queens, bitches.

IMO I was playing pretty well and it was just the cards not doing their part so I was prepared to play a few more to get myself even again but then this hand occurred and I decided to log off for the night as things were getting silly!

Overall, for the night I went 4/7 (won four lost seven) which is less than ideal for obvious reasons and takes my total for the week to 8/8 so losing to the rake.

Bankroll now stands at €162.45, so only €5 lost in total so I’m not going to cry and will probably play another 5-10 HUSNG tonight if I get the chance to.

I have started this blog to document my progress, or lack of it, at the poker tables. having played poker now for almost five years I feel it is time I started to really apply myself properly and start to make some decent money from the game I love.

I am quite lucky in that I am a winning player at cash, SNG and MTTs, but I still play the micro and small stakes games. The main reason for this is in the past my jobs have not been exactly well paid so I have always withdrawn my winnings to cover bills etc but now I have a much better paid dayjob so I can afford, in theory, to leave my winnings online and see how they grow.

Whilst I understand that you can make steady money playing cash games, my love is tournaments so that is what I am going to play. Not just MTTs but any form of tournament poker and keep a log of how i do here. My two largets scores came within four days of each other back in March when I came 4/1,300 in a $5 MTT for $406.25 and then later that week I came 1/382 in another $5 MTT for my biggest score yet of $477.50

My next goal is to book a $500 win, then a $1,000 win and take it from there. It maybe quite difficult to do so with m current bankroll of €167.45 and the Euro-only site I am playing on but I will see how things pan out and will probably move onto Stars or Full Tilt after Xmas.

Let’s get this show on the road!

Nada bem!

Before I forget, here are October’s numbers: Time Period: 28 days (Oct. 1 – Oct.28) Eve

Before I forget, here are October’s numbers:

Time Period: 28 days (Oct. 1 – Oct.28)

Events Played (SnGs & MTTs): 1,578

Total profit (before split): $1,120

Starting within a few days I am going to experiment with a weekly schedule I have designed to see how it impacts my mood and alertness and consequently my poker results:

Each 90-minute block of green represents a set of SnGs on Poker Stars. Although turbos usually last only 45-50 minutes, I am allotting myself extra time to account for how long it takes for 30-40 SnGs to fill up and completely register, as well as the occasional extended heads-up match. (Note: the constant strip of green on Sunday means I will be grinding MTTs instead of SnGs.)

Exercise will include weight training (squatting, benching, and other compound exercises) and high-intensity interval training, or HIIT. My main goals in this department are to increase my metabolism in order to be more alert during the 9 hours I will be playing poker every day as well as to build muscle and burn fat. I will also stretch at the beginning and end of each workout to avoid injuries and improve circulation (sitting in an office chair all day cannot be +EV for my veins amirite).

“Break” time will actually be used for overflow minutes for any SnGs which take an extraordinary long time to register and/or finish. Of course I will also water my garden during these times. o_0

I was initially concerned that I didn’t give myself enough “study” time in this schedule, but I feel comfortable with my ability to profit from mass-multi-tabling the $16s for right now. Obviously I will at some point study harder and attempt to move up in limits within the next year, but for right now my main priority is to seriously profit and save money for my own apartment.

“Off day” and “sleep” are just that.

If I don’t go insane trying to adhere to the above plan over the next couple of weeks, I will report how I’m feeling and my poker wins/losses. Thanks for reading!

darq

P.S.: I highly recommend the Firefox add-on “LeechBlock” if you want to help yourself be more productive while using the internet.

I was looking for a topic to write about today for NaBloPoMo and getting slightly panicky that I have nothing to write about when a topic fell through my reader into my lap(top). Its Mediocre Topic Tuesday and the topic is “How do you compute?”

We have a lot of computers. A LOT. Anyone who has been to my house and has seen “the office” knows that it is a scary, scary place. I have one little corner and the rest is Darren’s Stuff.

I have two computers. Three if you want to get technical. My desktop, which Darren built and works better than any desktop I’ve ever had. For real. It never crashes. It doesn’t like windows vista so much, but really, who does?

I have a laptop from which I do my surfing, writing, etc. etc. these days. It sits in the living room for now which is where the Poptart and I spend much of our days. Its actually a tablet: the screen rotates and folds down flat so I can write on the screen if necessary. Its lightweight (3 lbs) and I can easily haul it around if I need to. Its not super powerful and is a bit of a battery suck, but that’s typical for tablets. It also isn’t a big fan of Vista, but I hope to upgrade it to Windows 7 soon.

I have a second tablet that runs a bare-bones Windows 7 with Microsoft Office on it so that I can use my powerpoint presentations when I teach. Its the sicker of the two tablets.

I also have an iPod Touch which, with all the new apps? is da bomb. I pooh-poohed the iPhone when it came out, but I can see why people want them now.

(don’t be scared of the jargon up there. That’s the extent of what I know. I’m a computer tech’s wet dream or worst nightmare: I know just enough to cause extensive amounts of damage. This either keeps the techs in work or gets them too much work)

So, how do you compute?

Ok 60/69 dans mon tournoi .. va falloir faire quelque chose now. Out soon imo.

EDIT : out 46eme.

One of these days.

During some recent reading, it struck me that a useful framework for thinking about and talking about sentence generation is the MTT or “meaning-text theory” of Igor Mel’cuk, et al Here is one readable reference:

Igor A. Mel’čuk and Alain Polguère, (1987) “A Formal Lexicon in Meaning-Text Theory”, Computational Linguistics, vol. 13, pp. 261-275.

portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=48160.48166
www.aclweb.org/anthology/J/J87/J87-3006.pdf

Within the context of that theory, the output of the Stanford parser is strictly at the SSynR or “surface syntactic representation” level, while, as a general rule Relex attempts to generate the DSynR or “Deep syntactic representation” structure. Some of what I’ve been trying to do with opencog is towards the “SemR” structure, as described in that paper.

The more I read about MTT, the more it seems to capture some of what we are trying to do (defacto are doing) with NLP within opencog. In particular, the MTT concept of a “lexical function” (which is not really described in that paper??) could be a particularly strong way of guaranteeing correct syntactic output for segsim, nlgen or NLGen2
