Robert Pattinson Says Heading Into Non-’Twilight’ Territory Is ‘Scary’

‘You’re expected to come into the movie and provide not only economic viability, but also a performance,’ he says.

By Larry Carroll, with reporting by Jeff Cornell

With the #1 movie in the world bearing his name above the title and Hollywood’s hottest scripts lining his doorstep, it’s a good time to be Robert Pattinson. Not that the 23-year-old star has had much chance to enjoy it, as he recently told us he only received “three days off” in 2009, and 2010 looks even busier.

Recently, MTV Radio caught up with the man beloved by millions as Edward Cullen to discuss his plans for the new year — from “Breaking Dawn” and beyond.

“I’ve only done one movie outside of the ‘Twilight’ series, ‘Remember Me,’ ” Rob said of his first true post-fame project, a March 12 romantic drama opposite Emilie de Ravin whose shoot was most notable for its security issues. “But even that I did with the same studio, so I guess I’m still a little bit blind as to what my actual economic viability will be outside of the series.”

Undoubtedly, all eyes will be on “Remember Me” when it tests RPattz’s box-office clout in a few months. Following that and June’s “Eclipse,” his fans will have some other high-profile flicks to look out for.

“I think the tentative time for ‘Breaking Dawn’ is fall next year,” Rob said of the fourth “Twilight” novel, which might be split into two films. “Depending on how things go, I’m doing a movie called ‘Bel Ami’ in February, an adaption to a Guy de Maupassant novel. And I’m doing — I hope — a Western with Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman called ‘Unbound Captives’ sometime around there as well. They’ve got to try and juggle things around until everybody’s schedules work.”

Rob said he was eager to play the “Unbound Captives” role because it’s unlike anything he’s done before. “I’m playing a kid who was kidnapped by Comanche [warriors] when he was 4 years old. And he was brought up by them, and then his mother spends her entire life trying to find me and my sister,” he said of Weisz’s vengeful-mom role. “When she finds us, we can’t remember who she is and can’t remember anything about the Western culture which she grew up in.

“It’s like, you can’t really be more different from Edward,” he added. “I actually signed on to that after I’d done ‘Twilight,’ in the summer after I’d finished [shooting]. It was really before anything had happened [to make me famous]. I wasn’t even really thinking about it.

“It’s just a cool script,” Pattinson said of the film, drawing comparisons to the classic final movie featuring the star he is most often compared to: James Dean. “It reminds me in a lot of ways of ‘Giant,’ which is one of my favorite movies. So I think that’s why I responded to it.”

Already booked pretty solidly for the next year, Rob said he’ll continue to read new scripts and look for other parts that might catch his attention — even if there are some facets of his newfound fame that undermine the process.

“It’s definitely different,” he said of being a famous actor as opposed to a struggling one. “You get offered stuff that you would never dream of getting offered before, but that’s also scary. You don’t have to audition for anything. [But] I don’t want to do a movie just so it gets made. … You have to question yourself a lot more.

“Before ‘Twilight,’ I did any movie that I got [offered], and you’d try and make the best of it afterwards,” he explained. “But now, you’re expected to come into the movie and provide not only economic viability, but also a performance as well. You can’t just mess around. People are like, ‘We’re employing you to be here, as a star and an actor.’ It’s difficult, and it’s scary.”

The stars of “The Boondock Saints” and its new sequel, “All Saints Day,” stopped by the MTV newsroom the other day to chat about the film. While waiting for their turn in the interview chair, Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus (the titular Saints) took turns on our “Big Buck Safari” arcade stand-up. Unfortunately, neither of them had enough time for finish a full round, but the above shot just about makes up for it. Poor Robert Pattinson stand-up. It’s a good thing, then, that our pals over at MTV Radio recently spoke with the “Twilight” heartthrob.

Last week, we brought you RPattz’s thoughts on romances, both onscreen and off. Now, as those Thanksgiving leftovers wear thin, we’re happy to dish out part two of that interview, featuring some yummy tidbits on Rob’s 90-year-old fans, jealousy over Taylor’s bod, and his New Year’s resolution to be less self-deprecating.

MTV: Taylor Lautner’s transformation between the movies is now the stuff of legend. Tell us about the first time you saw him and what you thought.

Robert Pattinson: I didn’t see Taylor until just a little bit before we started shooting ["New Moon"]. When he came back, I had the same reaction as everybody else. I was like, “Jeez, now I have to go to the gym!” But yeah, it was strange. This one was weird, because I hardly did any scenes with Taylor. We did the scenes at the beginning and scenes at the end [together], and he had his entire story line develop without me being around, which is interesting, because I had no idea where his performance was going. So it wasn’t really a competition or anything; it was all independent. Whereas in “Eclipse,” we’re doing scenes together all the time with Bella.

MTV: Who is your favorite movie vampire of all time?

Pattinson: Wow, I don’t really know. I always think of the wrong people. I always think Christian Slater in “Interview With a Vampire,” but he’s not the vampire — he’s the interviewer! I really like Wesley Snipes [in the "Blade" movies]. I think Wesley Snipes is great.

MTV: Out of all the “Twilight” stars, you seem to do the fewest interviews. Why is that?

Pattinson: I think it’s such a risky thing doing interviews. I try to limit the amount of interviews I do, because no one is that interesting, especially when you’re not really saying anything. I don’t particularly want to be some kind of character in society or whatever. So I guess the only thing you can do is do jobs and see if people respond to that.

MTV: You tease yourself as “not saying anything,” and a lot of people see you as being self-deprecating. Are you?

Pattinson: I’m always told that I don’t really know who I am, so hopefully I won’t compartmentalize myself because of that. I am just completely ignorant of [how others perceive me]. I’ve never really struggled with anything up until recently. I’ve got to stop being so self-depreciating, because people are starting to believe it. They’re like, “Yeah, that guy is an idiot.” So I’ve tried to stop doing that.

MTV: What was the last fan interaction that really made you laugh?

Pattinson: I always find it funny when older people come up. There was a woman who came up to me the other day who must have been in her 90s! And she said all this stuff; it’s very unusual. And they say exactly the same things as 12-year-old girls! That is kind of bizarre.

YEP! You’ve heard of it and you’ve read about it and now we’re bring you MORE of it!! WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!

From MTV News

1. “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” ($72.7 million)
2. “The Blind Side” ($10.9 million)
3. “2012″ ($8.1 million)
4. “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” ($3.6 million)
5. “Planet 51″ ($3.2 million)

With “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” in over 4,000 theaters nationwide, there was virtually no chance that the continued romance of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan would fall anywhere short of first place — but perhaps no one could have predicted just how far ahead of the competition “New Moon” would end up.

The second “Twilight” installment has already shattered records and expectations by earning $26.3 million from midnight showings alone, decimating the record previously held by “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Additionally, “New Moon” enjoyed the single most lucrative opening day in the history of cinema with $62.2 million, a record previously held by “The Dark Knight.” Combined with the midnight intake, “New Moon” has already earned $72.7 million — and the weekend isn’t even over.

LA Times

Though the debut day for “New Moon” was unprecedented, the full opening weekend will probably be merely massive. Ticket sales for the first “Twilight” film, which opened on the same weekend last year, plunged 41% on the Saturday after it opened. “New Moon” will probably see an even bigger drop, given the massive amount of interest that helped it set a record as the biggest pre-seller on online ticketing services Fandango and MovieTickets.com.

Nonetheless, a total weekend gross of more than $110 million is all but certain and more than $120 million is very possible. That would give “New Moon” the biggest domestic weekend gross for any film this year, the biggest for an opening outside the summer movie season, and one of the top five of all time, not accounting for inflation.

Ticket sales from the 25 other countries where “New Moon” is opening this weekend will almost certainly push the worldwide weekend gross to more than $150 million.

Summit spent only $50 million to make “New Moon,” including tax incentives from Canada, where it was produced. Even including marketing costs, the picture is certain to be profitable based on ticket sales alone, even before Summit starts making money from DVD and other post-theatrical markets.

Studios usually keep about half the revenue a movie collects from theatrical ticket sales.

ABC News

The vampire romance sequel earned $72.7 million across the United States and Canada on Friday, a figure that includes record-breaking midnight sales of $26.3 million, said the film’s closely held distributor Summit Entertainment.

The old record for a single-day opening was $62.2 million, held by last year’s “Batman” sequel “The Dark Knight,” which went on to become the second-biggest grossing movie of all time in North America before accounting for inflation.

Such heights could be difficult for the “Twilight” sequel to attain. Still, industry observers expect it could finish up with upwards of $125 million for the weekend once Saturday sales data and Sunday estimates are issued early on Sunday.

Variety.com

The opening day for “New Moon” posted more than a 100% gain over the first Friday of “Twilight” which made $36 million a year ago and a three-day weekend of $69.6 million.

For a franchise that has clearly targeted females, “New Moon’s” first day is so exceptional that it’s probable that the film played beyond its core crowd to males. However, Summit plans to release the pic’s moviegoing demos, as well as international results, in its three-day estimate report tomorrow. Ever since the first installment finished its play in theaters, the production of “New Moon” has garnered non-stop headlines on glossy covers and fansites with the media savoring details on the film as well as its cast members Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

Manager Gary Burgess said: “We had a lot of hysterical girls. It was quite manic. When we opened yesterday we still had screams.

“The only thing I could compare it to is like girls at a pop concert.”

Lorna McFadzean, general manager at the Odeon in East Kilbride, said the film’s opening days have been phenomenal: “I can’t remember seeing anything like this in my time at the cinema. It’s busier than Harry Potter and Star Wars.

“We expected our audiences to be mostly teenage girls but we have had older people, couples, groups of guys.” Tim Richards, CEO of Vue Entertainment cinemas, said the movie is massive: “These were the largest attended midnight shows we have ever done.”Independents also saw a rush. Andrew Poole, boss of The Pavilion in Galashiels in the Borders called New Moon “the most popular film we have ever had”.

It shattered opening day records in America, beating the sixth Harry Potter film and The Dark Knight.

ProNetworks.org

SATURDAY NUMBERS: Early estimates show The Twilight Saga: New Moon taking in another $43M on Saturday. Adding in Sunday projections means a $140M weekend may be taking shape.

This would translate into a 40% drop from Friday to Saturday, about the exact same percentage decrease Twilight had one year ago (down 40.8% Saturday, down 41.9% Sunday). Adding the $43M estimate to Friday’s official number of $72.7 brings the total to $115.7M. Another 40% drop going into Sunday is projected to yield in about $24M, based on advance sales, tracking polls, and other industry formulas. That would bring the weekend total to around $140M and put New Moon in third place overall for all-time opening weekends, behind The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 3 but ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

These numbers are not official and are only estimates based on early reports. However, these preliminary figures are usually fairly close to the final data.

New Moon Opening Night: From Britain to China – fans are going crazy.

“New Moon” was the fastest advance-selling film of the year in Britain, exceeding the £1 million ($1.6 million) mark, according to the country’s largest cinema chain, Odeon.

In India, teenager Ritisha Mishra was so outraged at having been bypassed by the first movie that she rallied likeminded partisans online – and galvanized distributor PVR into bringing both the first and second films to the big screen over the next two weeks.

And in China, where at least one of the books in the series has perched atop the bestseller list for nearly a year, hundreds of thousands of admirers have been soaking up pirated versions of the first movie, which opens in general release only next week.

Ursula Mackenzie, CEO at Little-Brown, Twilight’s UK publishers, told the Daily Telegraph that the success of the franchise spoke to the broad appeal of Meyer’s focus: “She touches on themes – rebellion, angst, and finding your place in the world against tough odds – that resonate with girls and boys, teens and adults.”

Rea, a South African 8th-grader, says the book series is popular among teenagers because, “It has romance, it has trust and friendship, love, and hatred, it has it all.”

Dhalyn, an American 8th-grader who attends school in Johannesburg, is impatiently rereading “New Moon’s” 500-plus pages as she awaits the movie, which won’t open till Dec. 4.

She says it’s all about the storyline. “[It] has that kind of a hook to it that makes you want to read all the books,” she says. “There’s not a lot of stories about girls falling in love with a vampire.”

“I would say over 60 percent of the readers are middle school and high school girls,” says Chang Xiaowu, deputy marketing director of Jieli, the publishing house that bought the Chinese rights. “Edward [Cullen] is a vampire, he is dangerous. Girls love to fall in love with this kind of dangerous boyfriend.”

Edward’s appeal reaches beyond teenagers here, though. Many of his fans are young women in their twenties. “He is supposed to be the evil one, but actually he is a good person,” says Sun Junmei, a 26-year-old financial consultant in Beijing who downloaded audio versions of three of the books.

“Rob shifted into character and my jaw dropped open,” Meyer said in a fan forum that’s linked on her Web site.

“Suffice it to say, he really nailed it. He’s not playing a version of Edward, he’s playing Edward. There is still quite a difference between Rob’s Edward and the Edward in my head, but there are moments when they look eerily similar. I’m still not sure how he does it, but I’m glad he can. As for emotions, I think he does a great job.”

In the meantime, Meyer says she loves “New Moon,” which opened last night at midnight, and says she can’t name just one favorite part.

“I love so many things. Bella’s and Edward’s first conversation in the parking lot … the painting (of the Volturi — it comes alive!) … Jessica’s monologue … the scenes in Jacob’s garage … the first time you see the werewolves!! … Jacob in Bella’s room — thanks, Chris! (that’s Chris Weitz, the director) … the underwater moment … what you see while Thom Yorke’s amazing song is playing … everything in Italy … and I could go on.

Over @ MTV, they have a feature called “The MTV News Quote of the Day“ Apparently, Rob’s was yesterday’s quote:

“There’s so much money involved, and it’s such a huge investment to make a movie, and it’s difficult to make money in this climate. But when you hear about [people] at film festivals saying, ‘There are no passion purchases anymore at all,’ like, when people just say, ‘This is a great movie, and I want to distribute it because people wouldn’t be able to see it [otherwise].’ There’s none of that anymore. So, what I’m saying is that I’d love to invest in stuff which wouldn’t make any money. But I think there is a compromise in between the two.”

“New Moon” star Robert Pattinson, talking about his goal of being not just an actor but a producer in the film industry. While speaking to MTV News’ Larry Carroll, Pattinson expanded on something he recently said to Italian Vanity Fair about wanting to open up his own production company. “I guess, just from my experience in the industry and stuff like that, I’d like to make it a lot easier for the creative people to get their thoughts heard,” Pattinson explained. “Because I think it’s difficult.”

Seriously? Could the man be any better than he already is? He’s freaking smart, too. What a little smarty pants he is!! LOL

I could not be more happy for someone right now. When I heard the news he was named Executive Producer for “Remember Me,” [insert embarrassing fan girl moment here] I clapped happily as if he was someone I knew personally. Seriously, I know that sounds sad, but you know what? Of all people, right now, he deserves it. So, a special congratulations is put out there in the universe just for him.

Hello, boys (maybe? LOL) and girls:

So, it’s Saturday and I’m bored, so what am I doing? Besides drooling over all the new Rob pics from the different events this past week LOL? Doing a little researchy-pooh for you all.

Apparently, on Monday night over at MTV, there are going to be two specials regarding the love and romance of Twilight via “Love Bites” & another feature called “New Moon Revealed” which I’m sure will show a few clips and give us a little insight to the movie. I’m just guessing here, there’s only so much they’ll tell us anyways, right?

Utilizing new interviews, never-before-seen footage and the vast library we’ve accumulated over the last few years of being the fans’ top “Twilight” news resource, we’ll show you the couple affectionately known as “RPattz” and “KStew” like you’ve never seen them before.

The show will prominently feature die-hard fans of the series as they clamor to get a glimpse of the actors they’ve worshipped from afar. In the show, MTV News will count down the five hottest, most burning questions fans of the “Twilight” series want answered — from exploring how stardom has changed Robert Pattinson, to finding out whether Kristen Stewart is on Team Edward or Team Jacob, to telling the behind-the-scenes tale of how Taylor Lautner almost lost the role of Jacob.

In case that isn’t enough of an Edward and Bella blowout, we’ll be following that show with “New Moon Revealed” at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT. Hosted by our own Twi-Hard reporter Kim Stolz, the show will explore the “Twilight” phenomenon while answering the fans’ most burning questions from the serious to the sublime to the just plain silly.

“Love Bites” will get up close and personal, chronicling the relationship between Pattinson and Stewart from its early stages through their present-day reign as purveyors of Hollywood’s top romance. MTV will dig into the archives to hear from director Catherine Hardwicke, about the pair’s first, very intimate audition, as well as early interviews on the “Twilight” set where the duo spoke candidly about building their chemistry. Hitting the streets of Vancouver and Portland, where the films were shot, viewers will find out what goes on when the cast has downtime and what local bars, restaurants and locations they frequent — as well as hear from the people who see them when they are off-camera.

Hmm.. what was that? Oh, sorry, I forgot what we were talking about. That last picture killed me. I.Am.Died.

Oh, yes, the shows… I have heard mixed reviews on some people actually boycotting watching BOTH of these shows and it made me want to find out more about them. Why are people so insistent in not watching? I think people are most upset because they are rumored to be showing Rob and Kristen’s audition tape. That seems a little personal to me, so I can understand that– you know why people would be upset. I don’t think MTV is the platform for it, sorry. I think it would have been better suited on, oh, I don’t know– maybe the 3-disc Twilight DVD that I own? LOL

And while we’re on the conversation of boycotts and all? Honestly, kids, I can think of better things to boycott– like that Rob DVD that’s coming out soon? Ugh. You know the one I’m talking about. It’s the one that ripped of all the fansites and bloggers, stealing their graphics and blog posts, etc. I’m not even going to mention the name or give a link cause I hope they make very little money. Yes, I know that’s harsh. But how would you like it you worked really hard on something just for fun and had it stolen out from under you and not rewarded or credited for your time? Yep, it’s exactly like that. I know there’s still some people out there who haven’t been properly educated on the shenanigans that went on with all of that, and they’ll go out and buy it because they’re RobFans and all. But, let’s face it, if you’re a true RobFan, then you know the truth and you wouldn’t buy this DVD. If that’s you, then congratulations, I hope you like it, you just bought stolen goods. Ouch, hurts, doesn’t it? Sorry, but it’s the truth.

What else can I say? Running a blog is a lot of hard work. It’s not as easy as it seems at time. Especially if you create stuff and take your time to bring stuff to your readers.

I, by no means, am trying to toot my own horn, seek approval or praise or anything like that. Please understand when I say that half the time I am completely sarcastic about the things I say, but this time, I’m serious. I’m just saying I personally can understand and definitely appreciate the hard work that goes into it. The sites that were stolen from a million of light-years away from what this site could even dream of, so I know they work really hard to get where they are today. *STEPS OFF SOAPBOX*

So, anyways LOL, if you would like to check out those shows, they’ll be on Monday, November 16th. Check your local listings!

So, I ask you: Will you be watching these two shows on Monday night? Why or why not?

Travis Barker has big plans for his upcoming solo record. After wrapping up Blink-182’s reunion tour and rehearsing for a live show with Slash scheduled for November 22nd, he’s told MTV he’ll be in the studio cranking out a solo album that will hit stores in January or February of 2010.

[pullquote quote="I think I'm going to do something with Chester Bennington from Linkin Park" credit="Travis Barker"]

Blink fans will be happy to know that the band will record a new song for Barker’s album.

Travis told MTV News:

“There’s some stuff on my record that’s not going to have a bunch of guitars, that are just straight-up hip hop records. Everything’s going be real different. It’s going to be really well-rounded.”

“We got a new Blink song on there, I think I’m going to do something with Chester Bennington from Linkin Park. Hopefully a guest appearance from Slash, I’m doing his big fundraiser that happens this month. I think there’s going to be a collaboration with [Kanye West's touring DJ] A-Track, so it’s gonna be really in all directions.”

Sounds like there will be something for everyone on the record, unless you don’t like Barker’s infectious remixes and hard hitting drum style, in which case, why are you reading this?

From a bruise-inducing scene to a fake flight, spoiler-free goodies about the second installment in the ‘Twilight’ saga.

By Larry Carroll

As the number of days between you and “New Moon” continues to dwindle, you might think that you’re all studied up on the second novel in Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series. But although we can’t review the film yet (let’s just say it rhymes with “Schmawesome!”), we have seen enough and spoken with the cast enough to offer a few fun, spoiler-free goodies that will make your November 20 viewing experience even more pleasurable.

From a bruise-inducing scene to house construction, a pivotal pamphlet to a fake flight, read on to learn five things you don’t know about “New Moon.” Then keep checking back at MTVNews.com daily from now until the movie opens, as we unveil in-depth interviews, clips and coverage of the latest installment in Meyer’s screen saga.

TThe Swans Have a Not-So-Extreme Makeover

As any good Twilighter knows, the original film was shot in Portland, Oregon, but the sequels were moved to Vancouver, necessitating re-creations of such key locations as the Cullen house and Forks High. When production designer David Brisbin oversaw the “rebuild” of Charlie Swan’s house, he studied the original location obsessively and created exactly what he had seen — with one key addition. Take a look at the “New Moon” trailer and you’ll see a scene where Jacob leaps parcours-style up a tree and into Bella’s bedroom window. In the original “Twilight,” that bay window wasn’t there; Brisbin, however, felt that the moment was important enough to make the tweak.

Hell Hath No Fury

Actor Chaske Spencer stands 6-foot-2 and put on 15 pounds of muscle to play Sam Uley in “New Moon.” Kristen Stewart is 5-foot-5 and barely weighs more than 100 pounds. But when a pivotal scene called for her to punch and push him, Spencer left the set covered with black-and-blue mementos. “We did this scene and Kristen, she has a mean right hook,” laughed the muscular Spencer. “She hits me — I think it’s in the trailer. She hit me really hard, and I’m trying to be all guy-ish, show that she didn’t hurt me in front of [the other wolf pack] guys, or I’ll get teased. After 15 takes, ouch! She’s a little firecracker.”

Don’t Go Booking That Flight

We don’t want to accuse anyone of product placement, but when Bella and Alice head to Italy in a hurry near the end of “New Moon,” let’s just say it’s very obvious that they’re flying Virgin America airlines. And while thousands of people travel to Forks every month, they might not have so much luck retracing the Saga’s roots this time: Virgin America doesn’t offer flights from Seattle to Italy in real life — not even when you’re in a hurry to save a loved one from exposing himself as a vampire.

A Little Light Reading

Moments after arriving on set, each “New Moon” actor was handed a 20-page pamphlet written by director Chris Weitz, who envisioned them as “orientation guides” for the cast and crew. Although he was the rookie and many of his actors were on their second “Twilight” film, Weitz’s unusual document laid out his plan for the style and locations of the film — and encouraged the actors to improvise so that the plan could be taken to the next level.

Black and Right and Red All Over

In the original “Twilight,” fans never saw Jacob’s house. But in “New Moon” the run-down home on the Quileute reservation needed to be glimpsed several times, which had the filmmakers searching until they found an appropriate-looking shack near the forest where Jacob and the wolf pack would spend much of their time. The only problem? The house they found was green, but it had been described in Meyer’s novels as a red house. Intent on keeping the franchise’s obsessive fans happy, the whole place was painted red just for the movie.

‘I’ve heard that we’re going to shoot it in Portland,’ Edward Cullen says of the film’s location and Van Sant’s home base.

By Larry Carroll

BEVERLY HILLS, California — In early 2008, then-little-known actors including Robert Pattinson, Ashley Greene and Taylor Lautner traveled to Portland to shoot a small vampire film that they hoped would get a theatrical release. Barely two years later, “Twilight” is one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood, with two Vancouver-filmed sequels rolling into theaters. Now, Pattinson is revealing plans to return to the city where it all began — and recommending the Portland-based Oscar nominee he wants to direct “Breaking Dawn.”

“I probably shouldn’t say this,” Rob revealed to MTV News over the weekend, acknowledging that the wheels are slowly creeping into motion on “Breaking Dawn” getting made. “But I’ve heard that we’re going to shoot it in Portland.

“I think Gus Van Sant would be great to do it,” RPattz added, naming his dream director.

A double Oscar nominee for “Good Will Hunting” and last year’s “Milk,” Van Sant went to school in Portland, and has called the city home for many years while filming such movies as “Drugstore Cowboy,” “My Own Private Idaho” and the 2005 Kurt Cobain-quasi-biopic “Last Days.”

“He shoots everything in Portland,” reasoned the 23-year-old British heartthrob. “He’s good at making it look beautiful.”

Pattinson, whose long-term plans include starting a production company that would help make the sort of small, indie films that Van Sant has been overseeing for decades, thinks Stephenie Meyer’s fourth novel would be a perfect fit for the “To Die For” director. Overflowing with teenage angst, sex and violence, “Dawn” is the sequel that Twilighters are most eager to see. And, with scenes of Edward giving Bella a vampire cesarean, Jacob selecting the pale vampire-human baby as his soul mate and Bella as a vampire, it also promises to quite possibly be the weirdest.

“It’s all about teenage love and obsessions,” Rob explained. “I think Gus Van Sant would be great.”

Landing in the “American Idol” finale gets you a lot of things: a new car, instant name recognition, the opportunity to work with the industry’s top producers and songwriters on your debut album. (If you’re Kris Allen, you also score a hideous, pointless trophy.)

What you don’t get, however, is time. Somehow in the midst of doing press for the show and going on a massive tour, you’re expected to put out a high-profile album in just a few exhausting months.

Season-seven runner-up David Archuleta survived the first year of post-”Idol” craziness, and while he’s pleased with how his debut self-titled 2008 album turned out, he’s making sure the music on his next pop album reflects more of who he is.

“I’m hoping that at least some of the songs I’ve written this time around will be able to make it on to the record,” Archuleta recently told MTV News. “I don’t think songs have to be like these super-#1-smash-hit-sounding songs, because I think it’s more important that it’s like, ‘Hey! This is coming out of me. This is something I connect with. This is something that I like to sing.’ “

In addition to pushing himself as a songwriter, Archuleta hints that he might cover more genres on the next album. “Even if it’s, like, different styles of music … when you write, it’s like, ‘Yeah, even though these songs are different, they’re David songs.’ And you can’t say anything different. You can’t say, ‘Oh, that’s not a David song.’ It’s like, ‘Well, yeah it is because it’s my story and I wrote about it and it’s coming out of me!’ “

Fans worried the 19 year-old cherubic singer might pull a Kelly Clarkson and release a dark, moody collection of tunes à la My December needn’t fret. “[I'll] still look for the radio-friendly music and stuff. I want the stories to be more relatable to what I wanna talk about,” Archuleta said, adding, “It’s, like, fun music! But you can tell that it’s my story. And I like that.”

David spent a fruitful week in Nashville working with Joy Williams, Matt Wertz and Mat Kearney producer Robert Marvin (who recently spilled/tweeted the beans on two song titles, “Falling Awake” and “Sooner or Later”) and from what Archuleta told us, it was a liberating experience. “In other songwriting sessions I might have had, I was feeling so much pressure. ‘Oh, we have to get something done, this isn’t good as it should be.’ But I wasn’t worried about any of that while I’ve been writing so far.”

After Nashville, Archuleta spent some time in New York City with songwriter/producer Jeymes Samuel, who has worked with KT Tunstall, Mr Hudson and, oddly enough, Gorillaz. When asked if he would ever want to collaborate with Damon Albarn’s supergroup, Archie laughed, “I don’t think they’d want me.”

So when will fans get the chance to hear Archuleta’s new, more personal material (provided it makes the cut)? “I guess it just kind of depends when stuff is finished,” Archuleta shrugged, before beaming, “Which is exciting, because last year it was like, ‘Everything has to be done by this time!’ And [now] it’s like, ‘Wow! I don’t know when it’ll be coming out.’ And that’s kinda nice!”

After Nashville, Archuleta spent some time in New York City with songwriter/producer Jeymes Samuel, who has worked with KT Tunstall, Mr. Hudson and, oddly enough, Gorillaz.

Lady Gaga breaks Billboard records and made a music history when she baecame the first arist in the 17-year existence of of the Billboard Pop Song charts to get four #1 singles of a debut album. The Fame spawned chart-toppers with “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” “LoveGame” and, most recently, “Paparazzi.”

The pop star found out the news after her father’s open-heart surgery, she revealed to MTV news.

“Obviously, I cried like a baby when they told me that that happened,” Gaga said. “It was even more exciting because my dad had just recovered from his surgery, so it was kind of like this amazing moment that I got to share.”

Lady G. thanked her fans for supporting her music. Great for Lady G. to have set the record. I love her music and keep going Lady G.

Google Music gives users new way to search and listen as Google officially launched their new music discovery service. Google partners with labels, MySpace, Rhapsody and other make streams and MP3’s easier to find. It connects people searching for artists, songs or lyrics with free streams of tracks.

“Music is a big part of our lives. In fact, two of our top 10 queries of all time are music related,” explains the introductory video on Google Music’s home page. “We think it’s time to bring the power of our search to the music industry, so that you can not only find but also discover music.”

According to MTV news, Google has agreements with EMI, Sony, Universal and Warnor Bros. for music and Lala, iLike (owned by MySpace), Pandora, Rhapsody and Imeem for streaming and sales. Each search for a relevant artist or song yields a handful of links to free streams. (You’re limited to one full freebie per song; after that, you’re limited to 30-second snippets).

This is another from Google and this could change the way people look for and purchase music online. Cheers to Google.

• Their friendship declined on the court. In his upcoming book, When The Game Was Ours, co-written w

• Their friendship declined on the court. In his upcoming book, When The Game Was Ours, co-written with Larry Bird and author Jackie MacMullan, Magic Johnson admits that his close friendship with Isiah Thomas began to suffer when the two met in the 1988 NBA Finals.

“I saw things differently,” said Magic in the book. “Our relationship was changing.”

When Isiah and Magic kissed each other on the cheek before each game of that series, it was a gesture meant to suggest that their friendship dwarfed the competition between them. But that turned out to be false. By Game 5 Magic was resorting to a cheap-shot elbow to the kidney of Isiah as he drove to the basket; Isiah responded by throwing the ball at his best friend and lunging at his throat.

“I did target Isiah,” acknowledges Magic now. “[Coach] Pat Riley had questioned me in front of the guys whether I’d take him out. I needed to show them I was willing to do it.”

The big news from the book (to be released Nov. 4) has been Magic’s accusation that Isiah was spreading rumors about his sexuality after Magic was diagnosed with HIV in 1991. But that happened three years after those NBA Finals. The mistrust between them — the failure of their friendship that enabled the disagreements to come — developed first of all because they both wanted to win the championship more than anything else.

• The competition among the best players is paramount. Of course there are all kinds of reasons to doubt this — players from rival teams openly hug before each game and vacation together in the summer, while the biggest names pursue marketing endorsements or other entertainment deals that sometimes appear to blight their devotion to basketball. It has always been this way: Bill Russell has told me that he and Wilt Chamberlain were such good friends that they used to have dinner together on the eve of their games.

But at the highest levels of the NBA, the desire to win devours all else. For a couple of hours on the floor Russell would respect Chamberlain as an enemy, as opposed to the friend Chamberlain was at all other times. The brotherhood between Magic and Isiah has turned into a backbiting rivalry.

In recent decades the NBA has grown to look more and more like some kind of Hollywood show in which the players appear interested mainly in exploiting their celebrity and riches. That cynical dynamic exists among the lesser players, without a doubt. But the elite NBA stars have achieved their status because they want to win above all else.

• LeBron James refused to congratulate the Magic last season. Here is a guy who wants to become the most beloved and celebrated athlete around the world. He should be more concerned about his image than anyone. But when his Cavaliers were upset in the Eastern finals last May, LeBron was so angry that he walked off the floor without shaking hands with the Magic, and he left the arena without giving his customary interview to the press.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen that kind of behavior. Isiah’s Pistons walked off the court without shaking hands with Michael Jordan’s triumphant Bulls in the 1991 Eastern finals, just as Bird’s Celtics left the floor with time still remaining on the clock when Isiah’s Pistons knocked them off in the 1988 Eastern finals.

LeBron was criticized for poor sportsmanship last spring, but I viewed his exit as a healthy and impulsive display of what matters most to him. As much as he may want everyone to like him, his priority is to win championships. Without that bottom line there would be no larger interest in him or the NBA.

• Shaq and Kobe lost their way. They stand as a timeless example of teammates who couldn’t put aside their personal differences. To this day they should be playing together, with at least twice as many championships as the three they shared with the Lakers.

But they understand better than anyone the mistakes they made. Look what happened after they broke up. Each instantly began to chase more championships, whether it was Shaquille O’Neal in Miami with Dwyane Wade or Kobe Bryant in L.A. with Pau Gasol or now Shaq in Cleveland with LeBron. After they were divorced and they came to their senses, each went back to the basics of trying to win.

Imagine the triangle of emotions if Kobe should arrive at the NBA Finals to defend his championship against former partner Shaq and newfound rival LeBron. As much as the marketeers will be spewing millions of dollars out of that showdown, their work will be of secondary importance in relation to the all-out battles on the court.

• Michael Jordan told the truth. When he was inducted into the Hall of Fame, Jordan gave an edgy speech that came off as petty and vindictive. As much as I respect that view, my perspective was that he was finally being honest.

Throughout his career Jordan profited as the NBA, corporations and even Hollywood reinvented his character so it could be sold to the public. He was cast as a kind of athletic superhero, an inoffensive gentleman who could be seen as all things to all people. When he entered the Hall of Fame he finally let people know what he was all about, and to me it was refreshing to see him reading from his own script as opposed to one written for him.

The truth that drove him to his six championships against bigger and stronger rivals is that he carried grudges, invented enemies and took great joy in punishing his victims. All of the great winners have those qualities to some extent. Kobe has been criticized for his ruthlessness over the years, but that’s in part because he hasn’t been as adept at hiding that ruthlessness as his peers.

Eventually Magic and Isiah may resolve their issues and have a heart-to-heart conversation as the friends they once were. Maybe their differences can’t be fixed. But if they trace their breakdown all the way back, they’ll probably realize that all of their problems began because they both wanted the same thing: To win a game.

4 questions rescued from the spam

• Do you think LeBron James will be the defensive player of the year? Looking at his game (on Opening Night against the Celtics) and how he can take away baskets with his shot-blocking, it’s hard to say anyone else makes a bigger impact.
– Max, New York

While it’s a no-brainer to go with LeBron as league MVP for the second straight year, it’s going to be difficult for him to win the defensive award this season. First of all he must displace Dwight Howard, who dominated statistically in defensive rebounds (9.6 per game last year, second only to Troy Murphy) and blocked shots (a league-best 2.9). Kevin Garnett will also be in the running provided he is healthy all year long.

Michael Jordan won the defensive player award one time, in 1987-88, when he led the league with 3.2 steals per game and his Bulls were No. 1 in scoring defense overall. James isn’t likely to lead the league in steals, and it is an overrated stat anyway — a lot of the steals leaders are actually unreliable teammates who gamble too often on defense.

But if the Cavs should win the championship with LeBron making big defensive plays along the way, that could vault him into position to be recognized as the league’s most important defensive player the following season.

• The Mavs didn’t look good opening night against a Wizards team minus Antawn Jamison. Do they have the pieces to realistically compete with the Spurs and Lakers out west?
– George, Austin, Texas

I don’t think so. The Lakers and Spurs have as much firepower offensively, and both teams are better up front than Dallas. It’s not impossible — Orlando made the NBA Finals last year after Garnett was injured — but something will have to go wrong for the Lakers and the Spurs to make room for Dallas at the top of the West.

• You mentioned in one of your previews that Cleveland coach Mike Brown has to deliver a title to Cleveland this year. He seems to be ripped by the media for his unimaginative offense, but you said he is pretty sharp. Do his players respect him? What makes him so special?
– Gabe, Dayton, Ohio

His players defend for him, therefore they respect him. But most NBA coaches (except for the likes of Jerry Sloan) are going to be faced with questions of whether their players “respect” them until they win a championship. The perception of Doc Rivers changed drastically after his Celtics won the championship two years ago. People listen to him now as if he’s Aristotle; but if he hadn’t won the 2007-08 championship, then he would have been up against the same kind of win-or-else pressure Brown is facing.

There are four active coaches with championship rings: Rivers, Larry Brown, Gregg Popovich and Phil Jackson. Players accept Jackson’s instruction as a matter of faith because he has won 10 championships and therefore knows what he’s talking about it. Most of the league’s ringless coaches, including proven winners such as Stan Van Gundy and Flip Saunders, are going to be second-guessed until they win a Finals. They know it and accept it.

• There were a lot of responses to Denver GM Mark Warkentien’s proposal to introduce a mini-tournament for the No. 8 playoff spot.

What about a slight tweak: Non-playoff teams play a single-elimination tournament for the rights to the top pick? Take all of them and seed them according to record. This tournament could go on at the same time as the other one; you wouldn’t have to extend the season. And there’s no longer any incentive to have the worst record; in fact, you’d want the best record possible in order to have home court advantage in the loser’s tournament. I think it could work.
– Rob Mussig, Los Angeles

I don’t think so. In one of those years when an elite talent is available as the No. 1 pick (equivalent to LeBron or Tim Duncan), the No. 8 playoff team will go in the tank in order to qualify for your postseason tournament — then score the No. 1 pick by beating up the weaklings. Every team in the league would happily sacrifice the No. 8 spot in the playoffs in order to draft LeBron or Duncan.

I don’t understand how this proposal would prevent teams from tanking? If the No. 15 team makes the playoffs with the worst record, it still receives the best chance at the No. 1 pick in the lottery. Making the playoffs in no way discourages a team from finishing with the worst record.
– Jason Kaplan, New Windsor, N.Y.

I agree that teams would still be liable to tank the last month of the season (even though the lottery doesn’t necessarily reward that behavior). But at least the worst teams and their fans would have something to anticipate over the otherwise dreary closing weeks of an otherwise lost season.

There is no brilliant way to lift the cynicism that hovers over teams while they try to improve their position in the lottery. Would this proposal improve the current state of things incrementally? At least some people in the league think it’s worthy of discussion.

With Warkentien’s plan, what’s to stop a team like the Lakers tanking the season, finish 15th, win the mini tournament, make the playoffs and get the best chance to land the No. 1 overall pick?
– Dustin, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada

I’m pretty sure Kobe Bryant, Phil Jackson and Jerry Buss would stop the Lakers from doing that.

3 things you hear over a cup of coffee

• An Eastern scout on how teams will take fewer risks in their coaching hires:
The day of the disposable coach is almost at an end now. You’re going to see these owners leaning back toward experienced guys, so maybe they go for more of a coach’s coach than a player’s coach. I think the move in Detroit from Michael Curry to John Kuester is evidence of that. So was the thinking in Minnesota, to choose Kurt Rambis over Bill Laimbeer, who has never coached in the NBA. You saw Sacramento take a chance on a guy like Reggie Theus — that didn’t work. Get on the bench, put in your time, be at practice, learn how to do a game plan, form a philosophy before you’re handed the keys … That’s what teams are going to be looking for now that they don’t have as much money to spend.”

• A Western scout on why he watches the warmups:
It’s a good chance to see the young big guys who maybe don’t play a lot during the game. I’ll look at them in pregame during the drills and see what kind of touch they have, how they move and also can they catch it? Can they run and can they catch the freaking ball when it’s passed? If they can do those simple things then they can be big guys in the league. If not, then they’re non-factors. When I see a team that has a lot of young big guys, you can tell that team probably is hoping that one of the three has something that can allow them to play someday. That’s why you see big guys come out early in the draft, because they want to get drafted before people can figure out who they really are.”

• A Western scout on Al Jefferson:
“He has that old-fashioned game in the low post, and why that has gone away so much from the game today I don’t know. But somewhere down the road somebody taught him some post moves and then he refined them. It’s a feel thing when you’re operating in the post — I did this to him last time, now I’m going to set him up with the counter-move; or, he’s cutting me off in the middle, so now I have to go to the baseline.

“A lot of times you don’t see college players developing their post moves because they’re facing zones in college, and it’s hard to get the ball into them. Sometimes we’ll get big guys in for pre-draft workouts and it turns out they’ve got more skill in the post than what they showed in college, and the reason they didn’t have the chance to do it was because it was so crowded in there. But at the same time, I don’t see why more players wouldn’t want to put in the time to emulate the things Jefferson does.”

2 questions for Antonio McDyess

The newest 35-year-old Spur spoke to me in preseason.

• After missing 194 games because of knee injuries over three seasons (2001-04), does your body feel younger?

“People ask me that all the time. The answer is I really don’t. I didn’t play basketball, I didn’t run up and down the court. But mentally, that physical therapy all day for two or three years was a strain for my body, honestly. I was working hard. Personally I don’t feel any younger. But I do feel I got a lot more in my tank to help this team out, to win a championship.”

• What did your new partner in the front court, Tim Duncan, say to you when you came to San Antonio?

“He made it perfectly clear to me he wasn’t playing center. He said, ‘You know I’m still the 4.’” I said, ‘I can’t argue with you.’ I’ll play center, I’ll play 4, it don’t matter to me. I think he just likes the title [of power forward].

“He’s so humble, like you won’t even think Tim Duncan’s got four championships, because he’ll treat everyone the same and he’ll expect everyone to be treated the same. I would think Tim Duncan is like, ‘Hey, this is my team,’ and have an ego that way. But he doesn’t.”

1 thought on the Olympiakos saga

• A resolution must be achieved. During its preseason visit to the U.S. the Greek club Olympiakos was greeted with speculation that it might be garnished of its uniforms, plane tickets and other properties before it played exhibition games against the Spurs and Cavaliers. The goodwill trip turned into a fiasco.

There may be more to come. U.S. Rep. Peter King has drawn in the NBA by asking commissioner David Stern how he can be involved with a club that owes money to American players. Boston-based agent Tom McLaughlin and former player Chris Morris have won U.S. court judgments by default against Olympiakos worth $1.4 million that the club has yet to pay. Over the years there have been many stories of other American players who claimed they were owed money in unpaid salaries from clubs in Europe.

It is understandable that Olympiakos president Panagiotis Angelopoulos believes he is being held unfairly accountable for the sins of a previous owner. He has big dreams of growing his club by outbidding the NBA for players like Josh Childress and Linas Kleiza, but now he is being held down by an issue in which he was not personally involved.

Stern also must be wondering what this has to do with him, because his owners — to their fiscal detriment — pay NBA players in full whether they’re worthy of the salary or not. Then there is the Euroleague, which may be threatened with garnishment of its payments to Olympiakos even though in recent years it has raised the standards of its 24 clubs — including Olympiakos — with the result of far fewer allegations of unpaid contracts.

But none of this changes the bottom line: McLaughlin and Morris currently have a default judgment that permits them to collect their money. Not only does McLaughlin insist he will keep working to collect it, but that he’ll also counsel more former players who say they are owed money by other European clubs as well.

So other European clubs may yet face similar claims. Sooner or later, European basketball and the NBA will have to deal with the issue of the former players’ contracts. Otherwise it will limit their ability to grow the game together.

“He’s kinda more concerned about getting as much music as he possibly can, so that when he’s in there, people are still satisfied musically with Lil Wayne product. That’s just the mind of a true businessman. I’ll just do what I can to keep the whole Young Money/ Cash Money team going. I just want to play my part as a team member and keep the brand strong until the boss gets home.”

-Rapper Drake, speaking to RapUp.com about Lil Wayne’s impending stay in jail. Drake, who signed to Weezy’s Young Money label over the summer, talked to the hip-hop Web site about what will become of the Young Money crew while Wayne is incarcerated. Wayne’s commitment to churning out product has already begun, as he unveils the new No Ceilings mixtape this weekend. The tape will contain even more tracks than the version that leaked earlier this week, and it seems like Wayne will be banking as much music as possible between now and when he gets locked up. In the meantime, he still has his rock-oriented Rebirth album on the release docket, as well as a Young Money crew album jenaveve jolie pov.

As the week comes to a close here in the MTV Newsroom, we’re left with a handful of questions

As the week comes to a close here in the MTV Newsroom, we’re left with a handful of questions before we slide out the door and into the weekend. Is it too late to start training for the New York Marathon? (Answer: Yes, as it’s Sunday.) Is this weekend when we roll the clocks back? (Yes, so enjoy an extra hour of sleep before running the marathon.) What’s going to be the most popular costume for Halloween? (We’ve already seen more Sookie Stackhouses than we care to count.) But most importantly: What might you have missed this week here on the Newsroom blog? Lucky for you,
we have whole cornucopia of answers ready and waiting for your clicking pleasure.

» The World Series kicked off this week, with the Phillies and the Yankees each taking a game in the Bronx. We still think the Yankees have the better playlist, but the Phils do have the power of AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck.”

» “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” premiered this week, and Adam Lambert and Paula Abdul celebrated at MTV’s red carpet premiere.

» Speaking of Lambert, he revealed the cover for his album For Your Entertainment this week, which caused Jim Cantiello to go a little bit insane and insert himself into some crazy “American Idol” album covers.

» The next day, the craziness continued.

» And obviously, with any good bout of madness, there are always outtakes and deleted scenes.

» Speaking of album covers, Rihanna unveiled hers as well. The people weighed in, but what do you think?

» Justin Bieber dropped a new single this week, and it really made us want to put on a sweater.

» Joe Jonas changed his hairstyle, and everything turned out just fine.

» Har Mar Superstar made a rare appearance in the consciousness of the public, and he brought plenty of caftans to share.

» Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner may or may not be dating, but that’s beside the point. More importantly: Which is your favorite famous Taylor?

» Sarah McLachlan brought back sophie dee boobjob Lilith Fair this week, so we brought back tape of an all-star jam of Indigo Girls “Closer to Fine.” Oh, the ’90s.

» You know who else hosted all-star jams this week? The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame anniversary concert. But despite the fact that Bruce Springsteen traded solos with Tom Morello, they weren’t as stirring as Tom Hanks’ performance of “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).”

» Eminem, Black Thought and Mos Def traded rhymes in a freestyle cypher at the BET Awards. It wasn’t a competition, but for the record, Thought totally killed it.

» Eric Cartman (of “South Park” fame) added to his legacy of amazing musical performances with an incredibly intense rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face.”

» And finally, just in case you can’t get into a World Series game, just grab a press pass and wander onto the field. Follow Swizz Beatz for bonus points!

Christmas came early for David Archuleta fans. Earlier this month, the season-seven “American Idol” runner-up released Christmas From the Heart, which features 12 Christmas favorites as well as a new song Archuleta co-wrote, called “Melodies of Christmas.”

The 18-year-old told MTV News that working on an original holiday tune came naturally. “It all happened so fast that I didn’t really think about it!” he said. “I mean, that was the last song we worked on and recorded. And it was all pretty much a rush.”

Recording at a breakneck pace that rivaled the fast turnaround of his self-titled debut last year, David still managed to sing in four different languages for the album. “I had never spoken French in my life until [singing 'Pat-A-Pan'],” he said. The Latin in “Ave Maria” was more difficult to master, which is why Archuleta cited that track as the hardest to sing.

David also said “O Holy Night” was no picnic to record, either, though he delivered a pitch-perfect rendition to an MTV employee when he went caroling around the office just minutes after the interview wrapped. (He sang “O Holy Night” again when he spoke at a Women’s Conference in Salt Lake City earlier this week.)

The first song he recorded for Christmas From the Heart was album opener “Joy to the World,” and he concluded the sessions with the album-ending “Melodies of Christmas.”

“It’s kind of funny; you can hear how my voice was worn out by the end,” Archuleta pointed out. “But it was fun. It was an enjoyable album to make.”

And what about that early-October release date? “Well, that wasn’t up to me,” the rosey-cheeked singer laughed. “They usually come [out] around this time, anyway, right? Like Bob Dylan’s Christmas in the Heart came out the same day, so I’m not alone!”

David Archuleta is getting ready to hit the road in support of his holiday album. The Christmas From the Heart tour kicks off in Salt Lake City on November 24.
