Something about being a parent amazes me. I’ve put my parents through the ringer–first my heavy metal music preference, then my interest in men who listen to/play heavy metal, my choice to go to NYU in the “scariest of cities” to my attitude and sarcastic nature. Yet still, they love me. They love me this much: Yes, for early Hannukkah, my loving parents bought me a stand mixer. And not just any mixer, my coveted, RED, Kitchen Aid mixer. I almost cried. Make that I cried, but didn’t want to admit it. It was like falling in love with Miley all over again. Now with such a gift, I decided to dabble somewhere I have never ever dabbled before. MUFFINS. Fall Style.

Gently stolen from: http://www.acozykitchen.com/pumpkin-muffins/

Ingredients:

1-½ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 cup pumpkin puree (from a 15oz can)

⅓ cup vegetable oil

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

1-¼ cups sugar

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

Place muffin liners inside 12 muffin cups. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

This mixer makes me a better person.

Whisk together flour and baking powder in a small bowl. Mix together pumpkin puree, oil, eggs, pumpkin-pie spice, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl until smooth. Then mix in the flour mixture until just combined. Divide batter among muffin cups (each should be about 3/4 full). Bake until puffed and golden brown and a wooden pick or skewer inserted into center of a muffin comes out clean, about 25 to 30 minutes. Cool in the pan on a rack for 5 minutes, then transfer muffins from the pan to the rack and cool to warm or room temperature. Each muffin costs you around 200 calories. Makes 12 Muffins.

A little off topic, (Who’s surprised?) I really want to see Couple’s Retreat. Only because it would add more ticket sales to a movie that isn’t the abomination of terrible girl-crap Twilight. I’m sorry, I have thought skulls and vampires were cool since whenever, however back then I was “crazy and weird”. Now they are cool. You all are copy cats.

Today did not start out well. I was having the WEIRDEST dream ever, and must have turned my alarm off during said dream, because when I actually woke up and figured out where I was, it was 6:15 am, and I had to be out the door in 15 min! ACK!

I threw on some clothes, washed up, and put some food in containers and was out the door. I even made it to class on time, but had to wait until after class to dig into breakfast. Boy was I hungry!

In the thermos I had yogurt, the last of the quince, and pomegranate arils. The other container was just some Kashi Honey Almond Flax cereal to combine with said yogurt & fruit.

Yogurt close up!

It was horrendous weather all day. It just rained, and rained, and rained. Good thing I had my new fancy boots – they kept my feet dry and warm! But to warm the rest of me up, I had to hit up the Sbucks.

Do I even have to say what’s in there?

My last volunteer shift at Agora later, and I was on my way home. First thing on my mind when I walked in the door? What’s for lunch?

I made a grilled ham & cheese sandwich with baby spinach and red pepper jelly. Too bad my cheese didn’t want to melt.

I also heated up a bowl of broccoli soup my sister had made on the weekend.

Topped with a little more cheddar. What’s better than broccoli & cheddar?!

Rainy day food, for sure!

With a Werther’s Original candy for dessert

I spent the afternoon at home, expecting an important phone call. Of course, my mom then ended up on the phone all afternoon, and we don’t have call waiting, so I figured they called and got a busy signal. But, low and behold, and 5 pm I received my call. Looks like I’ll be working with a dietitian on a project at Children’s Hospital. Alas, it is only volunteer, but still – it’s all about boosting that resume, right?

Dinner was served way too early for my hunger, so I only had a bit.

Meatloaf, green peas, and apple/craisin/pecan salad. There were baked potatoes as well, but I wasn’t feeling it. And wouldn’t you know it, all my close ups turned out poorly. So this is all you get!

I made a quick trip up to the store to get a couple things (I was all out of good peanut butter), then had a sweat session with the dvd’s. Then it was time for me to satisfy my baking desires!

I had a hankering for muffins. I thought oatmeal and apple should be involved. I searched out some recipes, decided on this one as my inspiration, concocted a variation in my head, then assembled the required ingredients.

Some mixing, grating, scooping, and baking later, and I was presented with this:

Apple Carrot Raisin Oatmeal Muffins

makes 12 muffins

Ingredients

1 cup oats

1 1/4 cup all purpose flour (would have used whole wheat, but we had none)

1/4 cup wheat germ

1 tbsp ground flax seed

1 tbsp baking powder

1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp salt

3/4 cup milk

1 egg

1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

2 tbsp molasses

2 tbsp honey

1 tsp vanilla

1 carrot, grated

1 small apple, chopped

1/2 cup raisins

Method

Combine dry ingredients (oats through salt) in a large bowl.

Combine wet ingredients (milk through vanilla) in medium bowl.

Add wet ingredients to dry, then add carrot, apple, and raisins.

Mix until just combined – don’t over mix! (you know how muffins go).

Divide equally between 12 greased or lined muffin cups.

Bake at 375 F for 20 min, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

These turned out really well. I was a little worried that my wet to dry ratio would be off, but it was perfect. They are hearty, moist, slightly sweet, with a nice balance of spices. Both of my parents tried them out, and gave them the thumbs up. I think they would be a great breakfast muffin, pairing nicely with your favourite nut butter.

Obviously, I had one as my evening snack, with a another cup of chamomile tea.

I still have another project on the stove, but it’s totally time for bed, so I guess I’m calling it done. I’m sure you’ll get to see it tomorrow. Night!

This is a great quick recipe, perfect for those times when you’re being careful with your money or don’t feel like shopping, but need to satisfy a craving for something a little sweet. I give recipes like this the name “magic” because they can be made with a wide variety of ingredients (Magical Options) and they come out a little different every time, depending on what you have in the kitchen…. they’re a nice dessert, a great snack, a quick breakfast and a super gift for friends and neighbours… enjoy!

Ingredients

Dry ingredients:

2-3 Cups Muffin mix and a few Magical Options (see below)

Wet ingredients:

1 C water, 1-2 T cooking oil (or melted margaine or butter) and an extra cup of water

Mix your wet and dry ingredients separately, then make a ‘well’ in the middle of the dry. Add the wet mix to the well, stir it through to coat the dry mix; keep adding water a little at a time until the mixture is moistened all the way through, but not too stiff to stir. Set aside.

Preheat oven to 350ºF and grease your muffin tins well. Fill to 3/4 full of muffin batter, bake for 20-28 minutes or until they spring back to the touch and smell just right.

Magical Options (pick a nice combination from below and use your imagination!):

1/2 cup shredded coconut 1/2 C raisins or currants, chopped dates, dried cranberries, papaya, apricots…

1/2 cup sunflower seeds, almonds, walnut or pecans

1 tsp. powdered ginger 1 tsp. cinnamon powder

1 plain chocolate bar, chopped (or 1/2 C chocolate chips, or 2-4 T. cocoa

1 small apple, chopped or 1/2 C blueberries, strawberries

Muffin Mix

1) Store bought mix: you can find cake or muffin mix on sale and add “Magical” stuff from your kitchen

2) Homemade mix: 3 cups flour (or 2 Cups flour and 1 cup oats) 2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 3/4 C of sugar, or more or less to taste

Suggestions

Fruit Filling: Fill each muffin tin half-way and add 1/2 tsp jam, jelly or soft fruit in the middle. Fill the cups 3/4 full with the muffin batter and bake!

Time Savers:

1) Keep half of the batter in a clean jar in the fridge to make fresh muffins quickly anytime; the batter will keep for 4-7 days.

2) Make a big batch of dry muffin mix and keep it in the freezer – When you’re ready to make muffins, shale out what you need into a big bowl, add your wet ingredients and magical options and bake.

Sweet combinations:

“Fruity” explosion: Add chopped apple and a few raisins and berries to the dry mix; put a spoonful of jam in the middle of 2 layers of batter.

Ambrosia: Add coconut, ginger, cinnamon, almonds and orange essence, diced orange rind or mashed banana.

Gourmet ideas: You can blend a whole orange with the seeds removed into the wet mix, add some chocolate chips or cocoa to the dry and make a nice chocolate orange muffin!) How about lemon, poppy seed and cornmeal?

Savory Combinations: Leave out the sugar and add one or a combination of: Shredded cheese, chopped sundried tomatoes, cooked beans, diced carrot, fried minced onion, celery

Add herbs and spices – chili powder, oregano, rosemary, parsley , olive oil

Rough Times Bacon ‘n’ Egg Muffin: (you’ll never want to stop at a fast food place for breakfast once you’ve tasted these! ) Put a small piece of cooked bacon (vegetarians can use soy bacon), a bit of grated cheese and a spoonful of stirred raw egg in the middle of each muffin, fill the muffin cup with no-sugar batter (you can add a few herbs too!) and add a little grated cheese on top. Bake as usual.

Tip: Don’t have a muffin tin? Well, use a cake pan, a frying pan with a heatproof handle, small tart or other baking dishes – or get to the second hand store and find a nice muffin tin… it’s still probably cheaper than buying those store-bought muffins.

Much Love, Gramma Willi

Pré aqueça o forno a 200°C.

12 a 14 unidades

Couldn’t sleep the whole night. So, what should i make?

Mmmmm one Le Cordon Bleu recipe came to mind. It was the Chocolate Chip Muffin. So, i pulled myself out of bed and go straight into the kitchen. Make 1/2 batch of the muffin. And 20 minutes later (including prep time), my muffin was ready. So i let it cool a bit in the kitchen. To topped it all off, i put a dollop of nutella and a piece of bittersweet chocolate!!!

All i can say is “Yummmmmmmmmmmm”

I’ll let you in on a little secret point out something completely obvious: I’m a creatur

I’ll let you in on a little secret point out something completely obvious: I’m a creature of habit. I love tradition and sameness. It’s the other reason I have oatmeal and yogurt every morning, the first reason being it’s so good. I find making any sort of decision a burden and constantly second guess myself. Like yesterday, I asked myself “why do you want to run 10 miles in the pseudo-cold with no tv to watch?” What did it matter? The thing was that I did want to run it. Sometimes I wish I were on some sort of training plan or something to use as an excuse. Well that’s my confession of the day. So tell me, are you a creature of habit, too?

Well regardless I jumped in some running shorts and grabbed pre-run fuel.

1 Lightlife Breakfast Sausage Link

I’ve decided that I love fake meat. This stuff is my new obsession. I could never give up real meat for it, because I think they’re two very separate things. But that doesn’t stop me from loving them both. Do Tofurky’s go half off after Thanksgiving? Because if so I am buying out the freezer.

For my run I made a playlist with a ton of energetic playlists of mine and my Christmas tunes. It was a bit spastic between Lady Gaga and Bing Crosby, but kept me going for the whole 10.1 miles at 8:00 pace. I suppose in a way everytime I passed my house(all 8 times before stopping) I was deciding to keep going, but I tried to block out the fact that home was right there and kept going like I was far from the finish line. After showering we sat down to Sunday lunch.

Caramel Mustard Tofu, Acorn Squash With Full Fat Voskos, Brussel Sprouts Orange Zevia

On the one hand, I decided not to have the chicken that was roasted for dinner. On the other hand, hearing about Food Inc. has taught me that paying for most supermarket chicken is like paying for corn and fat and I’ve chosen a lifestyle that’s removed that as a food option. Thankfully I brought home enough tofu to feed a vegetarian army and cracked open the caramel mustard dip I brought for Thanksgiving. ‘Twas delightful. The acorn squash with yogurt was sooooo nice and creamy. And brussels are just one of my favorite vegetables ever! So overall it was a saved meal.

It’s definitely a habit of mine to want to finish all my homework for the next day as soon as possible. So I had no trouble sticking around long enough to finish translating Latin, and then plan on having The Aeneid read in the car. My throat was also feeling a bit sore, so I made a very “adult” decision:

Elan's Vanilla Frozen Yogurt And Giovanni's White Chocolate Cranberry Gelato

This totally soothed my throat. And it was a very adult(and tasty) decision to throw the frozen yogurt in there, too, if you ask me. What would I do without probiotics? For one I’m guessing my morning routine would not be so… routine. On the way down we made a pit-stop at Whole Foods. The Silk Nog, which I specifically requested we have at home so I could steal it for my dorm, I forgot in the fridge. Good going, self. Also, I kind of got jealous of the chicken at lunch and wanted some of my own since it was 1/2 off this week. After that, we got back to campus right before it was dark and unloaded everything(which wasn’t that much since I’m only back for 2 days). Eventually, my taste buds made this amazing decision for me.

Banana Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter And Kashi Dark Chocolate Cookie

Seriously, I think I should patent and charge royalties on this bowl–it was that good. I was sent a sample of chocolate chip cookie dough peanut butter. Funnily enough, I already had a full jar which I’ve almost gone through so I am well acquainted with the flavor. Still I hadn’t made a review in the new format so I had this bowl to “remind me” of how it was and give a good and honest review. Here’s another confession: when I add a whole wheat cookie on top, I usually only do about 3/4 the regular amount of oats. How many whole grains does a fella need?

There are certainly some decisions I’m happy to make as an adult(or whatever I am). Like the decision that I have some awesome food/leftovers and could eat in my dorm in my PJ’s listening to yet more Christmas music and translating Greek.

Deli Roasted Chicken, Veggie Melange, Microwaved Sweet Potato

I was definitely practicing for Thanksgiving with this one. The deli man gave me a bit too much meat but not enough to separate into two meals so I just let myself go at it. I love my sweet potatoes; why do people mash these up? Then you miss all the crispy crisp skin

I watched a bit of the American Music Awards but wasn’t too enthralled. It felt a little all over the place and while my love of music genres is wide it’s not quite that big to be entertained by it all. I thought Kelly Clarkson’s performance was really good, though. She’s just an awesome person with a very healthy attitude and by far the best thing to come from American Idol. Eventually I made something I haven’t had in a while.

Greek Yogurt With Cherry Butter And Dried Cherries Topped With Cherry Dark Chocolate And Vanilla Sugar

A gourmet yogurt mess. I forget how good these are. I’ll give you a clue, though: I don’t really make decisions on things like this or my oatmeal concoctions because most I’ve made before and are just resurrections of recipes. If you go back a few weeks, I’m positive you’ll find an identical mess. My current favorite oatmeal “recipe”(like you can’t already tell) is pumpkin oatmeal with butter toffee peanut butter and a vegan pumpkin molasses cookie crumble–genius. I then decided not that I don’t want oatmeal but that I wanted something simpler.

Chocolate Vitatop With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter, Carrot Ginger Muffin Top With Chocolate Sunflower Butter

Much easier I love the butter toffee with the vitatop if you haven’t noticed. And the sunflower butter worked well on the muffin though it’s so thick! It was almost impossible to spread. I do have one HUGE decision coming up: what to place in my next Naturally Nutty order. Clearly I need to plan on buying more at once because I’m almost out of butter toffee and this will be my 4th order from them.

I watched the end of the American Music Awards. Way to go, Taylor Swift, yet again! She’s just a rockstar now; I hope she doesn’t get too big for us country lovers who remember “Tim McGraw”. Did anybody else see Adam Lamberts hyped up preformance? That was pretty much porn. And I blame it for why I got an awful nights sleep. When I got up, I was craving something cookie-esque.

Spooky S'mores Z-Bar

That hit the spot, and also worked as my pre-run fuel. The run I’d rather not mention but I will. I really wanted to tie my distance PR of 15 miles and have that be the long run of the week. I felt like I had the energy and form, but annoying bathroom issues kept coming up. I never have these on the roads, just the treadmill, which makes it all the more frustrating. Instead of pushing myself to God knows what length, I decided 12 was enough to satisfy me and stopped then 1:36:44. After showering, I also decided that my “standard” breakfast of matchy-matchy oatmeal with a flavored yogurt was not what I needed today. What I needed was to shove my soul in a bowl.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With White Chocolate Raspberry Peanut Butter, Strawberry Frosting, And My Mojamix

My soul started with the standard 40gram oat blend, then mixed with 3/4 cup pumpkin(my soul really likes pumpkin), and topped with a double dose of strawberry frosting, a new nut butter I’m sampling for P.B.Loco(how did my soul know to want something it’s never had? intriguing), and my Mojamix(which would make sense since I designed it) which had an unusually high amount of chia seeds this time compared to when I last had it. Will my soul be poured into a bowl more often? Probably, but it will also probably change from time to time so who knows what it will look like.

It feels silly to have had to gone home this weekend for the retirement party, now back to campus for 4 classes between today and tomorrow, only to go back for Thanksgiving tomorrow afternoon. Such is life, I suppose. I’ll reiterate the question of the day: Are you a creature of habit?

Servono:

-         250 g di farina bianca;

-         ½ bustina di lievito per dolci;

-         100 g di burro;

-         180 g di zucchero;

-         250 g di mirtilli;

-         2 uova;

-         150 ml di latte;

-         1 fialetta di essenza di vaniglia;

- sale

。。hohoho。。。

《Vanilla, the most popular flavour in the world, originated in Mexico. Brought to Europe about 1520 by the explorer Cortez, it was first used only in conjunction with cacao beans in a drink called Chocolati. Since 1602 it has been enjoyed as a flavour by itself.

Grown mainly in Madagascar and Indonesia, as well as other minor areas, the vanilla bean, or pod, is the only edible fruit-bearing orchid. Each flower, open only one day a year, must be hand pollinated to produce a pod which requires a labour intensive 3-6 month curing process to develop full flavour. About 5 pounds of harvested pods produce only 1 pound of cured pods.》

Today, Muffin the dog gave me that stare. A stare which said I was really stupid, very naughty and “for the squllionth time, pee on the newspaper already!”.

Oh, but she’s such a cute dog to have around the house. She hangs herself off the side of the couch and stares at me while I’m cooking in the kitchen, she only jumps on the bed to join me when I’ve turned down the lights, she watches the television and barks whenever she sees a dog on TV and is 100% responsive to her own tail.

The melbourne heat should be better tomorrow, maybe a picnic, some vintage shopping along Smith St. or some exploring at Harbour Town!

Buongiorno bellas! Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the birthday wishes! Wow, you certainly know how to make a dame feel loved.

As I awoke Wednesday, I pondered how far I’ve come in 22 years. To think I once was this little bean is crazy:

Cheeks so big they could rest on my shoulders. And look, I was already hamming it up for the camera, despite the drool!

I’m so refined now I can hardly stand it:

Post-workout hair and no makeup other than the new lip gloss I bought for myself as a present. Covergirl Fruit Spritzers in Raspberry. Delicioso.

I kicked off my morning right and took a shot:

Of DayQuil!

It’s a wretched feeling to wake up on your b-day and not be able to swallow, accompanied by the overwhelming throb of headache as your background music. Thankfully, I felt better an hour after choking that puppy down. (Odd phrasing, as I’d never want to eat animals, especially puppies.)

To celebrate my 22 years, I ate what I wanted all day. Truthfully, I eat what I want, when I want every single day. Wednesday, however, I gave in once again to something for which all my vegan peeps are going to shun me:

Greek yogurt is hiding under a blanket of half a sliced naner, sunbutter, pumpkin butter and cinnamon. GASM.

I may or may not be OK with having yogurt every once in a while. I’m contemplating this.

I read for a while after breakfast and eventually hauled my hiney to the gym. For 50 minutes, I toned my thighs and buns and caught up with a few years of film history. Thrilling.

On my way home from the gym, I was feeling much better. All I needed was a little cardio. I felt so good I stopped by CVS to pick up toilet paper, lozenges, lip gloss and new gum. That’s the shopping trip to which I treated myself. Extravagant, right?

By the time I made it home I was hungry and thinking about what to eat. I walked up the stairs to my humble abode and found a darling little box of joy. Holly is amazing (but you already knew that):

Best cookies and handwriting ever. THANK YOU LOVEPIE!

This woman is seriously talented. She also knows me extremely well:

Vegan pumpkin molasses cookie in one hand, brew in the other. Yes, please.

Naturally, I ate a cookie as I thought about lunch:

Perfect soft texture sweetness factor. I ate a couple more throughout the day.

My actual lunch was one of my favorite things, a snack plate:

Raw veggies, pear and Sabra. Love.

How gorgeous are vegetables?

Enough to make me water-logged.

My afternoon was a little dull, as it was filled with writing, reading, trying to study but tweeting instead and clearing out my Reader. Adding to my distraction were the sweetest emails from my VegNewsies. I miss them like mad!

However distracted I may have been, I managed to learn about Hollywood blacklisting and write a final case study about Nation’s Restaurant News. At one point I had some reduced-fat Triscuits and a pumpkin ale to celebrate. I am ridiculous.

I had dinner arrangements with my roomie and Muffin at 7pm. We went back to the Mediterranean restaurant, where I continued to feed my addiction:

Hummus, dolmas, olives, roasted red peppers and baba ganouj.
I barely made a dent in this, which is shocking. Well, by “barely made a dent” I mean half the hummus was gone, three dolmas were consumed and most of the baba ganouj was intact (surprisingly not a fan).

While enjoying dinner, Popsicle called to surprise me with the best birthday present ever. I get to fly home for Christmas!!!! Made my day, fa sho.

After dinner, the roomie went home to study and Muffin and I went to our favorite bar, Broney’s. As soon as I announced it was my birthday, the hot, not-single bartender said, “Oh, you’re going to die.” I really like living, so I was somewhat hesitant. He fixed me a creamy shot that curdled as I gagged it down. Vomit in my mouth. Absolutely disgusting. Thank the sweet heavens for Christmas ale to wash the pain away.

Muffin and I didn’t stay long, as we had other establishments to visit and strangers to ask to take pictures of us:

Eating Muffin's hair. Whoah, how orange am I?

But before we knew it, we had to return to Broney’s for one reason: Karaoke Night (it deserves to be a proper noun, thus the capitalization)! At this point, I was crumping and didn’t sign up for a song. Is there such a thing as Karaoke Crashers, though? Because I definitely did that.

Some friends joined us for the last leg of the night, one of which was Italio-Bro. I’m not sure he’s ever going to understand that I’m not into him. I’m more into this:

Choking Muffin. Hahahaha oops.

Fun was had by all, and I tucked myself into bed at 2:30am, clothes hung in my closet, face washed, teeth brushed. Success.

I slept until 11:30am Thursday, which is completely shocking! I didn’t wake up with a headache, but my throat was so sore I could barely swallow (is that what she said?). I discovered this when I tried to eat breakfast:

Toast AKA the worst food for a sore throat. Blonde moment.

Between meals and gargling salt water all day, all I did was read and study for film. Not fun, but necessary. I had half a melted banana with almond butter about an hour after the torture toast:

Simple, easy to eat.

Oh! There was a thrilling part to the day, but I have to keep it a secret for a few months. So sorry And no, I didn’t land a book deal like these fabulous women. (I’m aiming for a TV show anyway, duh. Kidding…kinda.)

Two hours after banana snack and two eras of film, both my throat and stomach needed soothing:

TJ's black bean soup doused with Frankie.

I definitely followed that lovely soup with a vegan pumpkin molasses cookie. Thank you again!

Reading, studying, writing…that’s all that took place for several hours until Muffin stopped by to say goodbye. She’s already back in Cincinnati and I’m not sure when we’ll get to see each other again. I do now, however, that we’ve made it through three months of separation before. We can do this.

Dinner time rolled around and I had a bizarre craving that fit into my attempt at eating throat-friendly foods:

Sweet n' spicy.

I microwaved the potato for seven-ish minutes, topped it with TJ’s cranberry apple butter, chopped balls and Frankie. It was so good! Also, a reader once asked what to do about TJ’s products, such as cranberry apple butter, and what to do if there isn’t a TJ’s around. I wouldn’t hesitate to go to your local grocery store (Kroghetto, anyone?), buy some cranberry spread/canned cranberry and regular apple butter and mix the two. It may even be better than the TJ’s stuff, as it’s mostly cranberry anyway.

Like a good student, I still stayed off the Reader, out of G-chat and off Twitter and returned to studying. An hour or so later, it was time for a snack:

I had to let it soggify. This gorgeous thang understands.

In the bowl: plain shredded wheat, So Delicious coco milk, vegan carob chips, raisins and cinnamon. It was so good I went back for a second, smaller bowl.

I pulled my bum out of bed and trekked to the music building at 8:40. Sometimes you don’t know how sick you really are until you start walking around. I’m not enjoying the pounding, which always makes me imagine people passing bags full of sand back and forth in my head.

I sat and listened to the girls for an hour, and then met up with a fellow student to talk about Film 201. Turns out I learned a ton in one day.

I’ll be up for the rest of Thursday and well into Friday morning studying. The silver lining? New York. Saturday. I’m there.

Love you all!

Ciao for now,

Kailey

QUESTION: How do you kill a cold in two days? Possible? Also, because I didn’t have one and will make up for it in New York, what’s your favorite flavor combo of cake+icing? Mmmm.

Ingredientes:

400 g de abóbora cortada grosseiramente

350 g de açúcar mascavo

4 ovos

sal marinho (usei o comum)

Enquanto o muffin assa, prepare a cobertura:

I undertook another another mission last night as I had to get a cab from work to A&E via Bezzer

I undertook another another mission last night as I had to get a cab from work to A&E via Bezzer Liv’s house to collect my moral support and then have my crummy foot checked out again. An evil nurse made me feel so silly for even being there (“we’ve already told you clearly there’s nothing wrong, so why are you here again?”) that I secretly cried a little bit after she’d gone. Luckily Liv saved the day by finding the nicest lady in Homerton Hospital and asking her what we should do. Nice lady instantly got a doctor to have a quick, kind word with me, and he checked the x-ray and made me an appointment at the fracture clinic for this morning. Turns out the bone is in fact cracked and I’m now in a space-age fracture booty device for the next six weeks. That’s going to put a whole lotta spanner in the Guardian Girl works – unless they happen to base the next six weeks of fashion shoots around pseudo-ski style and/or neu-medical hip.

Such is my renewed dedication to the Guardian cause that, even though I didn’t get home from The A&E Experience (“watch your crutches on that puke on the floor. Actually, is it a turd?”) until past 11pm, I still made a batch of muffin mix, let it rise while I had my bath and then cooked them while I dried off. They were less satisfying to make than yesterday’s crumpets and I totally fonzed up the mixture by using self-raising flour instead of plain and putting too much water in so the dough resembled PVA glue. I also coated them in actual semolina rather than the suggested semolina flour, because it was what I had in the cupboard. I thought they’d be disastrous but in fact they came out looking more or less like muffins, albeit slightly fecal as ever, and they tasted pretty good but a bit bland. Actually, to be totally honest about it half of them tasted like washing up liquid. There’s a good reason for this. After crumpetgate I washed my frying pan by pouring water and washing up liquid into it and leaving it on a hot hob until it boiled away. Dunno why it did it but by the next day I’d forgotten I had. The frying pan looked lovely and clean so I started cooking the muffins without rinsing it. I suppose I might produce some extra oestrogen as a result but that’s unlikey to do me much harm. Three breasts are better than two.

I think the muffins are meant to be split and served with butter or the like (marge?) but I’m trying to be slightly calorie aware as I’m getting zero exercise with my injured paw, and we know what happens when you eat Guardian food every day. It tends to supersize a girl. I got away with it slightly more when I was walking or running 4-12 miles a day but arguably that’s what gave me the cracked foot, and one must pay attention to the body’s cries for help apparently.

I could sue the Guardian for making me chubby and further adding to my distress by suggesting I wear small fashions. Or I could thank them because the surgeon told me I have good strong bones, which I attribute to all those pies.

So the crutches made it into yesterday’s fashion and the booty is soon to become a regular sight. Dunno if I can wear it with a platform heel on the other foot. I suspect the answer to that is fairly obvious. So much for xmas party glam.

No muffin shots but here’s another underwhelming fashion shot of yours truly outside Horrorton Hospital.

Conclusions

I’m pretty sure my captions are going downhill.

Every time I try to type “conclusions” I type “cobclusions”, which is not only irritating but also reminds me of my dead house rabbit Cobbie, who I really loved even though he bit the crotch of every male who went anywhere near me, no matter whether their intention was to kiss me or or hand me my change. He had a pink lead and used to go everywhere with me, which I think might be why he was so irritated all the time. I feel a bit guilty now but I did give him lovely fresh veggies every day and he lived a mollycoddled, free-range life.

Don’t forget to clean the detergent from your pan before you heat food in it, will you.

Ok, so my cupcakes never really become cupcakes, but at least they were good pumpkin muffins that we

Ok, so my cupcakes never really become cupcakes, but at least they were good pumpkin muffins that were moister than the ones I had at a recent family fun fair. The recipe I used was from a blog called MomGrind at http://momgrind.com/2009/10/12/pumpkin-cupcakes/ The only thing I did differently was add a bit of nutmeg and I didn’t make the frosting. Otherwise, I followed the recipe. I think I will be buying cupcakes for my daughter’s birthday party at her preschool.
