Believe the hype. This much-praised documentary about one of the most famous boxing matches in history deserves every one of its accolades. Blending sports drama and biography with a touch of political analysis, When We Were Kings relates the who, when, where, and most importantly the why of the 1974 George Foreman/Muhammad Ali world championship fight in Zaire.

Splicing together old news footage, photos, and contemporary interview clips, director Leon Gast captures the excitement and chaos that led up to the famed “Rumble in the Jungle” and the incredible characters and events surrounding the thrilling bout.

The documentary explores a gamut of issues that defined the 1970s and impacted the African-American community: the Vietnam War and the draft, the nascent “Black is Beautiful” movement and idealization of Mother Africa, and the brutal reality of post-colonial dictatorships. But it is the charismatic and bombastic Muhammad Ali at the center of it all who steals the show with the sheer force of his inimitable personality. When We Were Kings reminds us why… (Barnes & Noble)

The lovely and talented Pia Reyes, Miss November 1988, was the first Filipino model to appear in Playboy.

“I am an ethnic jumble,” says Pia Reyes. … “My parents had their Filipino friends — my Mom was always cooking this smelly fish — but I grew up like a white suburban kid. I played lacrosse, basketball and tennis. (“Thrilla from Manila,” Playboy, November 1988)

They called her article, “Thrilla From Manila,” but actually she grew up in Havertown, Pennsylvania. In case you don’t get the title (which makes you absolutely no son of mine), it is a reference to the third and final fight between heavyweight boxers Cassius “Muhammad Ali” Clay and Joe Frazier for the title of Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World, which took place in the Philippines on October 2, 1975.

The fight finally brought to a conclusion a bitter rivalry that had been going since 1971, that for my money is one of the best stories in the history of sports (where is its movie, Hollywood???). This one’s got it all, guys: draft-dodging, personal jealousies, the backdrop of major historical events, the freaking President getting involved, even. And through it all, two very different but very contentious personalities, Frazier and Ali, duking it out verbally and physically, in the press and in pre-fights. In the Thrilla in Manila, they went fourteen grueling, brutal rounds, both fighting to the point of almost total physical exhaustion before boxing official Eddie Futch declared Ali the victor (he said at the time it was to spare Frazier’s life, although really either could have gone).

Frazier protested stopping the fight, shouting “I want him boss,” and trying to get Futch to change his mind.

Futch simply replied, “It’s all over. No one will forget what you did here today”, and signaled to the referee to end the bout. Ali was therefore declared the victor.

He would later claim that this was the closest to dying he had ever been, and also stated, “Joe Frazier, I’ll tell the world right now, brings out the best in me. I’m gonna tell ya, that’s one helluva man, and God bless him.”

In a brief post-fight interview with one of the commentators, Ali announced, “He is the greatest fighter of all times, next to me.” (the wiki)

Do you even understand how major all of that is? Boxing is not as violent as you think, and it’s not always just big fat guys hugging (I always say, “Get a room or start punching”), not when you have two men in the ring as skilled as Frazier and the Greatest. Though you seldom see it at the heavyweight level, you see it more often with middle and welter (not bantam as much cause they’re so quick it’s like the cockfight from which their category’s name comes), it’s a graceful and carefully plotted series of moves, like a bloody ballet, it’s like … like art. It’s a dance. And you have these two combatants who are so equally matched that they are like hell-soul-mates, made to fight each other. That’s just, it’s just — like… god… oh, man, I honestly get misty just thinking about that event. That is some great motherfucking sports right there. I wish I had been born to see it firsthand, but I’ve watched clips of it on ESPN classic. (Boy, I miss having that) Le sigh.

\

As an epilogue, this story gets even better, in my opinion, because dig this: In June of 2001, guess who met for a grudge match on the Thrilla in Manila fight? Their freaking daughters. The fight was re-enacted, sort of, in New York by Laila “She Bee Stingin’” Ali and Jackie “Sister Smoke” Frazier-Lyde in what the press called Ali/Frazier IV. Laila, sixteen years younger than Jackie and with a little more training under her belt, took it in eight. But I love that both of them went for it! What a great story.

Finally, dig the Jessica Rabbit cover! God bless ya, Roger Rabbit and all of 1988. And to Pia Reyes, about whom this entry is not even at all remotely concerned, sorry. It’s not your fault that I think boxing is more interesting than whatever your little turn-ons and ambitions were. I feel kind of badly now. How about this? I will try to make it up to you another day, I swar to gar. You will get more attention from me later. Unless I forget.

(Photo: Neil Leifer)

“There is only one whack at the home run to win the game, and you have to be right the first time.”

It is one thing to simply witness that home run, but a sports photographer’s job is to capture that moment for posterity. Walter Iooss and Neil Leifer not only captured many of those moments, they have done so with an artful grace rarely seen in sports photography.

The above quotation comes from a film feature that accompanies the new exhibition Sport: Iooss and Leifer, which opened this past weekend at the Annenberg Space for Photography. The exhibition showcases the work of these two preeminent sports photographers, whose portfolios include most of the iconic sports moments and figures from the 1960s until today.

The two have very different styles, but the joint exhibition works better than separate solo shows: each man’s images plays off the nuances of the other to reveal an artistic strength to their photography not truly appreciated on the pages of Sports Illustrated.

Leifer’s photographs tend to go for the “moment,” recreating the feeling of witnessing history and knowing that moment will never happen again. In a shot from the 1973 Kentucky Derby, Leifer’s camera is practically on the track, seemingly seconds from being trampled by the lone Secretariat, barreling down the final stretch to his record-setting win.

He covered many sports since his start in 1961 at the age of 17, but Leifer’s shots of Muhammad Ali’s decisive victories are his masterpieces. ”Without getting into the sports argument about whether he was the greatest athlete of all time, he was the greatest subject of all time,” Leifer explained about photographing his favorite subject, “he transcended boxing.”

Leifer’s best-known photo of Ali captured the heavyweight champion immediately after his knock-out of Sonny Liston. With the camera at ring level, Leifer perfect captured the moment immediately after Liston fell, with Ali taunting him, mouth wide open and staring down his opponent. The photographer throws his own jab: the image shows a line of defeated photographers on the opposite side of the ring, looking as if they had just been knocked out too, knowing that Leifer got the shot they wanted.

Iooss (pronounced “yose”) also captured many of the same moments and icons, including Ali, but his style is more cerebral.

His photographs depict sport’s impact on the athletes, evoking through eyes and body language their emotions–motivation, confidence, or even defeat. Even when photographing superstar names like Michael Jordan and Brett Favre, his portraits seem to bring the athletes down to a human level.

As such, Iooss’ body of work demonstrates the universality of sport: the athletic intensity coursing through the veins of our idols is the same seen in the eyes of children playing stickball in Cuba. Iooss is also known for a series of photo collages, combining his photographs with political and social messages to reflect sports’ impact on humanity.

For example, the exhibition features a 1999 photo collage from one of Iooss’ images of Cuban children, a shot of a shirtless boy playing stickball, poised to hit a ball of tape as his friends look on. Around the print, Iooss plastered political newspaper headlines, such as “It’s going to rain money in Cuba” and “These events could not have taken place without the complicity of the U.S.” Juxtaposed with the distressing reminders of Cuba’s political state is the look of hope on the face of the batter, as if he is going to follow the ball he hits all the way to the major leagues.

Accompanying the 80 prints in the exhibition is a digital slideshow that plays in the gallery’s central film space, which is not to be missed. The slideshow features images not printed in the exhibition and interviews with Iooss, Leifer, as well as many prominent athletes, that reveal many remarkable anecdotes about the craft behind the photography.

Even if you can’t name the subjects of the photographs without reading the labels or you have long forgotten the historic moments captured, you will get chills from the feeling of struggle and triumph that exudes from Iooss’ and Leifer’s photographs. Sports fan or not, the exhibition is not to be missed.

“Sport: Iooss and Leifer” runs through March 7, 2010 at the Annenberg Space for Photography, 2000 Avenue of the Stars, Century City, Los Angeles, CA. For more information, visit their website at www.annenbergspaceforphotography.com.
Muhammad Ali: It is befitting that I leave the game just like I came in, beating a big bad monster who knocks out everybody and no one can whup him. So when little Cassius Clay from Louisville, Kentucky, came up to stop Sonny Liston. The man who annihilated Floyd Patterson twice. HE WAS GONNA KILL ME! But he hit harder than George. His reach is longer than George’s. He’s a better boxer than George. And I’m better now than I was when you saw that 22-years old undeveloped kid running from Sonny Liston. I’m experienced now, professional. Jaws been broke, been knocked down a couple of times, I’m bad! Been chopping trees. I done something new for this fight. I done wrestled with an alligator. That’s right. I have wrestled with an alligator. I done tussled with a whale. I done handcuffed lightning, thrown thunder in jail. That’s bad! Only last week I murdered a rock, injured a stone, hospitalised a brick! I’m so mean I make medicine sick!
Don King: Bad dude!
Muhammad Ali: Bad, fast! Fast! Fast! Last night I cut the light off in my bedroom, hit the switch and was in the bed before the room was dark.
