The third in Strut’s Inspiration Information studio collaboration series brings together an intriguing pairing between one of Africa’s great bandleaders, Mulatu Astatke, with the next level musicianship of The Heliocentrics collective from the mighty roster of Stones Throw / Now Again. — Known primarily through the successful ‘Ethiopiques’ album series and the film soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Broken Flowers’, Mulatu Astatke is one of Ethiopia’s foremost musical ambassadors. His selfstyled Ethio-jazz sound flourished during the “Swinging Addis” era of the late ‘60s as he successfully fused Western jazz and funk with traditional Ethiopian folk melodies. — The Heliocentrics have become known as one of the UK’s foremost free-thinking collectives of musicians, inspired by a wide palette covering Sun Ra, James Brown, David Axelrod and all manner of psych, Afro and Eastern sounds. The collective have featured on records by Madlib and DJ Shadow. Now a fixture within the Stones Throw / Now Again roster, they forged their own genre-breaking directions in the astral analogue groove on their 2007 debut album, ‘Out There’. Tip!

Thursday 17th April
7-1
£15 adv

LIVE: Mulatu Astatke, Heliocentrics
DJ: Karen P, Gilles Peterson, Karl Injex

Karen P Presents… Broad Casting

As part of this year’s Red Bull Music Academy programme in London, this special edition of ‘Broad Casting’ presents Mulatu Astatke and The Heliocentrics.

Playing in London for the first time in 15 years Ethio-Jazz sound pioneer Mulatu Astatke, plays an exclusive live date at Cargo. His backing band will be made up of the fantastic Heliocentrics (Now Again / Stones Throw), who also provide a support set on the night. Host and DJ Karen P is also very happy to be joined by long-time friend, Gilles Peterson alongside NYC’s legendary party purveyor Karl Injex.

This is the third instalment of Karen P’s Broad Casting series at Cargo. It’s already established itself as an innovative, musically-rich session, having pulled in a couple of Scandinavia’s hottest acts already, Little Dragon in February and Jimi Tenor in March. This month, Broad Casting sees Karen P hauling in one of the true godfathers of world music all the way from Ethiopia.

Born in Ethiopia in 1943, Mulatu Astatke is an innovative multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and originator of the Ethio-Jazz sound. Having studied music in London and then the US, he established himself as a vital vibraphone, conga and percussion player on both sides of the Atlantic before returning to his homeland to introduce Jazz, Soul and Latin to Ethiopia’s native musicians and artists. Included in the now legendary Ethiopiques compilations, Jim Jarmusch’s Broken Flowers soundtrack, and much sampled by Hip-Hop and Dance producers alike, his sound will be familiar to many even if his name isn’t.

These days Mulatu regularly lectures at Harvard and gave a memorable lecture at the Red Bull Music Academy in Toronto last year. Karen P’s Broad Casting is honoured to host Mulatu’s first UK performance in over 15 years.

The Heliocentrics are drummer Malcolm Catto’s collective and are signed to Stones Throw’s sister imprint Now-Again. Having performed and recorded as DJ Shadow’s backing band, they have individually played major parts in bands such as the Soul Destroyers, Quantic Soul Orchestra and The Herbaliser. Malcolm himself released a solo album on Mo Wax and has been sampled by none other than Madlib.

Pigeonholing The Heliocentrics sound is hard. Suffice to say that it takes in all manner of jazz, electronica, psychedelia and world music. Whilst they inhabit the funk universe of James Brown, they also capture some of the disorienting asymmetry of Sun Ra, the cinematic scope of Ennio Morricone and the sublime fusion of David Axelrod.

Tonight sees a very rare live collaboration between Mulatu and this incredible collective of musicians, with The Heliocentrics also performing their own work in support.

The Broad Casting night will be recorded especially for Red Bull Music Academy Radio. It will fit snugly amongst an archive of music from the most iconoclastic DJs & musicians of our time. Left-field, underground, contemporary, genre-crossing; RBMA Radio is Karen’s biggest project since leaving ‘Worldwide’.

Mulatu Astatke is from Ethiopia and recorded his seminal records in the 1960’s and 1970’s on small independent labels in Ethiopia. The world is finally catching up to this maestro’s greatness, 2009 has seen Mulatu tour the world and release new material, including a collaboration with Malcolm Catto’s London based psych-jazz ensemble the Heliocentrics. In the 1960’s Mulatu studied in London and New York and absorbed a lot of the NuYorican sounds going around at the time, mixing it up with his unique blend of Etiopian music and it’s unique pentatonic scale (which has five pitches per octave). Their aren’t too many composers whose sounds equally remind you of the arrangements that Duke Ellington composed mixed with fuzz and wah-wah psychedelic sounds. His music has influenced a new generation of musicians including the Budos Band, Dub Collossus, and Cut Chemist.
There is something that can only be described as magical in Mulatu’s greatest compositions; part cinematic, part jazz-funk, it sounds like Roy Ayers scoring a gangster film in the desert. The new album, Inspiration Information 3 captures the essence of Mulatu’s previous work and the Heliocentrics and their drummer Malcolm Catto deliver the goods behind Mulatu’s vibe playing and percussion work.
In the last ten years the songs of Mulatu have appeared on the compilation Ethiopiques 4: Ethio Jazz and Musique Instrumental and in the Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers. In 2009 Strut records released the collaboration Inspiration Inspiration 3, and now they have compiled a Mulatu anthology called New York – Addis – London The Story of Ethio Jazz, which features very hard to find gems from Mulatu’s back cataloge. Mulatu has also begun to tour again, and if you get the chance do not miss this giant of music in person!
