Krekar er tilbake i pressen etter en tids tørke. Det får meg til å lure på om agurknyheter har blitt et helårs- foretakende nå? Vel, uansett så er det jo ytringsfrihet i dette landet, og det innebærer også at vi må tåle at Krekar prater piss. Det beste hadde nok vært å utlevere han til USA – ettersom vår egen sikkerhet er viktigere enn beskyttelsen av en terrorist. Dette reiser automatisk spørsmålet: Er Krekar egentlig så stor fare for den norske sikkerheten? Når det gjelder tittelen “Mullah”, så er dette en tittel som i hovedsak blir brukt i den muslimske verden som en måte å respektere en høyt æret, religiøs utdannet mann på. Jeg synes derfor folk burde slutte å bruke en slik betegnelse om Krekar. I mine øyne er han i alle fall ikke en høyt æret mann…
Det finnes kanskje også grenser for hvor lenge vi vil fortsette å være et fredelig, kultivert og åpent folk?

Shirin Ebadi e l’Iran: l’avvocato dei diritti umani che da decenni sfrutta i codici per scalfire l’arroganza dei mullah, e l’onda di popolo che dal 12 giugno scorso cerca il mare aperto seguendo la corrente di internet. Incontriamo il premio Nobel a Palazzo Ducale, dove approfitta del World Venice Forum 2009 per ribadire le ragioni della tecno-rivolta di inizio estate. Nessuna retorica, poche parole, una firma convinta sul manifesto con cui Wired candida internet al Nobel per la pace 2010.

Non che le sfuggano i limiti dell’aspirante “collega”: «Internet può essere usata anche per favorire guerra e terrorismo, come dimostra l’opera di proselitismo dei talebani». Ma il passaparola della sollevazione di Teheran – che ha viaggiato anche al ritmo di 220mila tweet all’ora – è stato troppo impetuoso per lasciare anche il minimo dubbio sul fatto che «senza la Rete non sarebbe stato possibile. Non è un caso che ai primi processi contro i dimostranti il procuratore generale abbia accusato Google, Facebook e Twitter di complottare contro l’ordine costituito».

Shirin ebadi si considera una militante dei diritti umani. Non vuole parlare di politica, non è iscritta ad alcun partito, arriva a dire che le è indifferente chi sia il presidente del suo paese. Sembra accomodante, quasi deludente, ma siamo noi a essere duri di comprendonio. Perché senza cambiare tono di voce Ebadi affila i pensieri e ci dice che «a essere inaccettabile è la violenza sul popolo. Dopo le elezioni, un milione di persone ha sfilato a Teheran senza rompere un vetro. Ma mentre se ne tornavano a casa, il potere ha cominciato a sparare dai tetti».

Il risultato è il rotolo di nomi che Ebadi porta sottobraccio, e dispiega con cura per dare un’identità ai cinquecento ragazzi arrestati, torturati, ammazzati o dispersi dall’inizio della rivolta: «Quando sono esplosi i disordini io ero in Spagna per un convegno. Come tutti mi sono collegata a internet, ho cominciato a telefonare, a mandare mail, a consultare compulsivamente il sito di Bbc world». Da Teheran gli amici le chiedevano di andare all’Onu.

«Ed è quello che ho fatto: dopo pochi giorni ero a Ginevra a implorare l’Alto commissario per i diritti umani di richiamare all’ordine le autorità del mio paese». Con poca fortuna: il Segretario genera le dell’Onu Ban Ki Moon, invitato ufficialmente da Shirin a recarsi in Iran, preferisce non muoversi, e a Teheran restano solo centinaia di migliaia di ragazzi armati di banda larga e cellulare.

La rivoluzione del web ha permesso a migliaia di rancori solitari di diventare un’unica protesta corale: «Per noi Facebook è quello che erano le moschee per i rivoluzionari di trent’anni fa», sintetizza un ragazzo su Twitter. Certo, a qualche mese dai primi cortei la dittatura è ancora lì. Ma l’Iran sembra un altro paese. Agile, tenace, moderno: «I nostri giovani sono all’avanguardia da tempo», ci dice Shirin Ebadi con orgoglio venato di delusione. «In Occidente avete pregiudizi che fanno soffrire, perché scambiate il potere per il popolo, e l’aggressività di pochi per la voglia di pace, modernità e democrazia della maggioranza della gente».

Il web demolisce lo stereotipo del popolo appiattito sul fanatismo dei leader: «La Rete restituisce all’Iran l’immagine che merita nel mondo. Ce n’è bisogno, perché mentre i giovani di Teheran si ingegnano contro le censure del regime, a Parigi o Londra capita ancora di sentirmi chiedere se sono l’unica avvocato donna del mio paese». Per la cronaca: in Iran sono donne il 70 per cento degli studenti di legge.

Mezz’ora con Shirin Ebadi insegna che la pace è un lavoro, la giustizia una disciplina, e la lotta per affermarle un’agenda fitta di impegni e povera di soddisfazioni eclatanti. Tocca girare il mondo, smussare i luoghi comuni e offrire il proprio volto a una folla che ormai non nasconde più solo i capelli: «Il mese scorso all’aeroporto di Teheran hanno fermato una ragazza in arrivo da Parigi», racconta un’iraniana che studia a Ca’ Foscari. «Le hanno chiesto se avesse una pagina Facebook, lei ha negato ma controllando hanno trovato sia lei sia tutti i suoi amici. Da allora ritocchiamo le foto e sui social network ci firmiamo tutti “Iranì”».

Shirin Ebadi invece un nome ce l’ha. È scomodo, ingombrante e l’accompagnerà quando fra un paio di mesi tornerà in Iran: «Ma non ho paura, cosa potrebbero contestare a un avvocato che chiede solo il rispetto dei diritti?». Non parla dei rischi che corre, ma le fa rabbia che grandi gruppi occidentali aiutino il regime: «Anche le aziende dovrebbero rispettare i diritti umani. E allora perché Nokia ha fornito la tecnologia per identificare chi parla a un cellulare o manda una mail?». La vicenda è nota e sottolinea ancora una volta la duplicità della tecnologia. Sollecitato anche da numerosi articoli e da forti proteste (in Iran, oltre 12mila mail), il colosso finlandese ha confermato di aver fornito a Teheran – in joint venture con Siemens – il sistema Monitoring Center che permette di intercettare comunicazioni vocali da telefono cellulare o fisso.

Questa, per l’azienda, è la prassi internazionale: «Se vendi un network, vendi anche la possibilità di intercettarlo. Neppure i governi occidentali consentono di costruire reti sprovviste di questa funzionalità. E senza rete, in Iran non ci sarebbero stati i tweet». Nokia Siemens ha venduto il Monitoring Center in 150 paesi. Shirin Ebadi registra la precisazione ma ribatte che «non si può trattare allo stesso modo una democrazia e un sistema autoritario». Sono categorie commercialmente scorrette. Ma naturali per questa donna che a chi le chiede cosa sia la felicità risponde: «La democrazia».

La raggiungerà mai il suo popolo? «Il popolo raggiunge sempre quello che vuole». Shirin ci deve lasciare. In piazza San Marco la attendono le donne in nero che ricordano le vittime della rivolta. A loro sarà dedicato il suo prossimo tweet: stessa lotta, ancora internet. Anche per questo c’è la sua firma alla candidatura del web al Nobel per la pace del 2010.

Only 100 spectators showed up for the Iceland-Iran match held at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium

In an unprecedented event in the history of Iranian football, Iranians sanctioned the Iran-Iceland match held in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium on Tuesday.

Despite the fact that Iranian regime’s authorities worked hard to entice people to the match on Tuesday evening, only a group of one hundred of the regime’s agents appeared in the empty spectators’ seats.

“In spite of efforts by Afshin Ghotbi to have spectators show up in the stadium, only 100 attended to watch the match between the two countries national teams,” reported the state-run INN website.

Last month, over 100.000 Iranian sports fans showed up in Azadi Stadium and chanted “death to dictator,” and “as long as Ahmadinejad is in power this situation will continue.”

Mossad menggunakan virus untuk menyadap informasi soal reaktor nuklir Suriah.

Pangkalan Udara Ramat David di selatan kota pelabuhan Haifa, Israel, 5 September 2007. Sepuluh pilot diminta bersiap untuk latihan darurat dengan jet tempur F-15 yang mereka sebut “Raam”, dalam bahasa Ibrani berarti guntur.

Perintah yang keluar beberapa menit menjelang pukul 11 malam itu adalah hal rutin. Lantas kesepuluh F-15 itu terbang ke arah barat menuju Laut Tengah. Tiga pesawat diperintahkan pulang, sedangkan tujuh lainnya lanjut ke timur laut mendekati perbatasan Suriah.

Di sinilah, Operasi Orchard dimulai. Sebuah misi rahasia untuk menghancurkan apa yang diyakini Israel sebagai reaktor nuklir. Ketujuh pesawat pengebom itu terbang rendah menghindari pantauan radar Suriah. Selang 18 menit, mereka tiba di kawasan Deir el-Zor. Setelah mengunci kompleks Al-Kibar sebagai sasaran, sejumlah bom dimuntahkan. Al-Kibar berada di tengah gurun seluas 25.000 kilometer persegi. Letaknya 30 kilometer dari Deir el-Zor dan 130 kilometer dari perbatasan Irak.

Israel sudah lama mencurigai Suriah berupaya mengembangkan kekuatan nuklir. Bagi negara Zionis ini, tidak boleh ada satu negara Arab pun yang merupakan musuh mereka mempunyai senjata pemusnah massal. Tak heran, pada satu malam di bulan Juni 1981 beberapa F-16 Israel mengebom reaktor nuklir Osirak, dekat Ibu Kota Bagdad, Irak.

Kecurigaan Tel Aviv menguat setelah Mossad (dinas rahasia luar negeri Israel) berhasil menyadap informasi seputar Reaktor Al-Kibar pada akhir 2006. Insiden itu berlangsung di Ibu Kota London, Inggris. Mossad menyusup ke kamar seorang pejabat senior Suriah yang menginap di sebuah hotel di kawasan elite Kensington.

Sang pejabat yang sudah lama diawasi berbuat ceroboh. Ia lupa membawa komputer jinjingnya saat meninggalkan kamar hotel. Para agen Mossad lantas menyelusup masuk. Mereka memasang program “Trojan Horse”, jenis virus untuk menyadap semua informasi yang ada di komputer itu.

Informasi yang diperoleh sungguh berharga. Ruang penyimpanan komputer itu berisi rencana pemmbangunan reaktor yang berlangsung sejak 2002, surat-surat, dan ratusan foto. Salah satu foto menunjukkan Chon Chibu, kepala teknisi reaktor Yongbyon, Korea Utara, berdiri di samping Ibrahim Usman, Direktur Komisi Tenaga Atom Suriah.

Ali Reza Asghari, seorang jenderal Iran yang membelot ke Amerika Serikat membenarkan soal reaktor nuklir Suriah. Proyek itu, kata dia, dibantu oleh Iran dan bekerja sama dengan Korea Utara. Lelaki 63 tahun ini meninggalkan Negeri Mullah itu pada Februari 2007 karena merasa jiwanya terancam setelah menuding beberapa orang dekat Presiden Mahmud Ahmadinejad terlibat korupsi.

Tidak seperti pejabat Suriah yang lalai, bagi Ali Reza komputer jinjingnya begitu bernilai. “Saya membawa komputer saya. Seluruh hidup saya ada di sana,” kata mantan komandan Garda Revolusi Iran di Libanon pada 1980-an dan pernah menjabat wakil menteri pertahanan Iran pada 1990-an. Ia seolah hilang setelah berganti identitas.

Mossad juga mendapatkan kabar Muhsin Farizadeh Mahabadi yang diyakini para pengamat sebagai kepala “Proyek 111” untuk membuat senjata nuklir Iran pernah mengunjungi Ibu Kota Damaskus, Suriah, pada 2005. Setahun kemudian, giliran Ahmadinejad yang melawat dan dipercaya menjanjikan bantuan US$ 1 miliar bagi proyek nuklir Suriah.

Pada Agusuts 2007, Mayor Jenderal Yaakov Amidror dengan langkah tergesa masuk ke kediaman resmi Perdana Menteri Israel Ehud Olmert di Gaza Street, Yerusalem. Ia melaporkan soal kebenaran reaktor Al-Kibar. Lelaki religius ini adalah satu dari tiga pejabat senior yang lima bulan sebelumnya diundang Olmert membahas program senjata pemusnah massal Suriah.

Seetlah misi pengambilan contoh tanah di Deir el-Zor awal September, Olmert makin percaya. Operasi Orchard pun tinggal menghitung waktu. Ia sempat memberitahu Stephen Hadley yang kemudian menjabat penasihat keamanan nasional Amerika. Maklum target operasi hanya lusinan kilometer dari markas militer Turki yang merupakan anggota Pakta Pertahanan Atlantik Utara (NATO). Operasi itu pun selesai pada dinihari 6 September 2007.

Tak ada yang tahu apa yang sebenarnya terjadi di gurun nan sunyi itu. Sejumlah warga Deir el-Zor mengaku menyaksikan kilat. Beberapa orang mengatakan melihat asap raksasa membubung di atas Sungai Eufrat. Penampakkan pada dinihari itu menjadi obrolan di pelbagai warung kopi yang berjejer di tepian sungai.

Israel dan Suriah pun berupaya menyembunyikan peristiwa itu. Perdana Menteri Israel Ehud Olmert langsung menelepon Perdana Menteri Turki Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Ia menjelaskan soal serangan terhadap reaktor Al-Kibar dan meminta Erdogan memberitahu Presiden Suriah Basyar Assad bahwa Israel tidak akan membiarkan negara itu membangun pembangkit nuklir.

Olmert menegaskan pihaknya tidak akan membesar-besarkan insiden itu jika Assad berbuat sama. “Insiden ini tidak pernah terjadi,” kata seorang juru bicara militer Israel yang tidak disebutkan identitasnya seperti dikutip radio pemerintah.

Assad mengatakan apa yang dihancurkan jet-jet tempur Israel hanya markas militer biasa. “Kami bisa saja menyerang balik. Namun haruskah kami tersulut untuk berperang? Lantas kami masuk perangkap Israel?” ujarnya dalam wawancara khusus dengan Der Spiegel pertengahan Januari lalu.

It is another blow to the munafiqun of Pakistan who come on T.V. and lie to please their dollars paying masters. Alhamdulillah, time is exposing who is a real Munafiq and agent of Kuffar getting paid in dollars and who are true Mujahideen fighting in defense of Muslim land against invasion of Kuffar and their munafiq friends.

Pakistanis must compell their fathers, sons, cousins and friends working in army, at operational levels, that this is NOT Pakistan’s war to fight and there is NO enemy of Pakistan. All of this drama is for USA’s pleasure and earning of dollars by handful of people who have sold their souls to Kuffar together with fate of entire Pakistani nation.

Dobbiamo piantarla con la menzogna che siamo in Afghanistan, oltre che per portarvi una democrazia di cui a quella gente non importa nulla, per combattere il terrorismo internazionale.

Gli afgani non sono mai stati terroristi, tantomeno internazionali. Non c’erano afgani nei commandos che abbatterono le Torri Gemelle, non un solo afgano è stato trovato nelle cellule, vere o presunte, di Al Quaeda scoperte dopo l’11 settembre. C’erano arabi sauditi, yemeniti, giordani, egiziani, algerini, tunisini, ma non afgani. Nei dieci anni di durissimo conflitto contro l’invasore sovietico gli afgani non si resero responsabili di un solo atto terroristico, tantomeno kamikaze, né dentro né fuori dal loro Paese, e se dal 2006 si sono decisi a ricorrere anche a quest’arma all’interno di una guerra di guerriglia è perché si trovano di fronte ad un nemico quasi invisibile che usa prevalentemente bombardieri, possibilmente Dardo e Predator, aerei senza pilota ma armati di missili, telecomandati da Nellis nel Nevada. Del resto non si può gabellare una lotta di resistenza che dura da otto anni, con l’evidente appoggio di gran parte della popolazione senza il quale non potrebbe esistere, per terrorismo. Gli stessi Pentagono e Cia, nei loro documenti, chiamano i guerriglieri “insurgents”, insorti. Solo il ministro La Russa usa ancora il termine “terroristi”.

In Afghanistan all’epoca dell’attacco alle Torri Gemelle c’era Bin Laden. Ma i Talebani, preso il potere, se l’erano trovati in casa e, dopo gli attentati in Kenia e Tanzania, era diventato un problema anche per loro. Tanto che quando Clinton nel 1998, attraverso contatti discreti, propose al Mullah Omar di uccidere lo sceicco saudita il leader talebano si mostrò disponibile. Inviò a Washington il suo braccio destro, Ahmed Wakij, che incontrò il presidente americano due volte, il 28 novembre e il 18 dicembre. Wakij propose due alternative: o gli americani fornivano ai Talebani alcuni missili per colpire lo sceicco oppure sarebbero stati i Talebani a dare agli Usa le coordinate esatte del luogo dove si trova Osama in modo che potessero centrarlo a colpo scuro. Ma nell’un caso e nell’altro la responsabilità dell’attentato dovevano assumersela gli americani perché Bin Laden in Afghanistan aveva costruito ospedali, strade, ponti, godeva di una grande popolarità presso la popolazione e il governo talebano non poteva assumersi la paternità del suo assassinio. Stranamente Clinton declinò l’offerta (Documento del Dipartimento di Stato, agosto 2005).

In ogni caso Bin Laden è scomparso dalla scena da anni. Si dice allora che, Bin Laden o no, l’Afghanistan è tuttora la culla del terrorismo quaedista, cioè arabo. La Cia ha calcolato che fra i circa 50 mila “insurgents” ci sono 386 stranieri. Ma sono uzbeki, ceceni, turchi. Non arabi. E poi che interesse avrebbero i terroristi internazionali a far base in un Paese presidiato da 110 mila soldati Nato, quando potrebbero stare nello Yemen, dove c’è un governo che li protegge, o mimetizzarsi fra la popolazione in Arabia Saudita, in Giordania, in Egitto per prepararvi in tutta tranquillità i loro eventuali attentati? Al Quaeda, ammesso che esista, è una realtà del tutto marginale in Afghanistan. Ma noi la prendiamo a pretesto per continuare ad occupare quel Paese.

Le altre motivazioni con cui cerchiamo di legittimare la nostra presenza sono: riportare la sicurezza e la stabilità nel Paese, la lotta alla corruzione dilagante, alla disoccupazione, alla droga.

È del tutto evidente che la situazione di insicurezza e di instabilità è provocata proprio dalla presenza delle truppe occidentali perché quel popolo orgoglioso e fiero, che ha cacciato inglesi e sovietici, non tollera occupazioni, comunque motivate.

Stabilità e sicurezza ci sono state nei sei anni del governo talebano. E qui bisogna fare un passo indietro altrimenti non si capisce niente né del fenomeno talebano nè di ciò che accade oggi in Afghanistan. Dopo la sconfitta dei sovietici, i leggendari comandanti che li avevano combattuti, gli Ismail Khan, gli Heckmatyar, i Dostum, i Massud, e i loro sottoposti, in lotta per la conquista del potere, si erano trasformati in bande di taglieggiatori, di assassini, di stupratori che agivano nel più pieno arbitrio. La crescita del movimento talebano fu dovuta a questo. I Talebani, appoggiati dalla popolazione che non ne poteva più di quei soprusi, combatterono e sconfissero i “signori della guerra” e li cacciarono dal Paese riportandovi l’ordine e la legge, sia pure un duro ordine e una dura legge, la shariah. Nell’Afghanistan del Mullah Omar, come mi ha raccontato Gino Strada che vi ha vissuto, si poteva viaggiare tranquilli anche di notte. In quell’Afghanistan non c’era disoccupazione perché il Mullah, sia pur con qualche moderata e mirata concessione all’industrializzazione, aveva mantenuto l’economia di sussistenza. Non c’era corruzione per il semplice motivo che i Talebani facevano impiccare i corrotti. Infine dal 2000 non c’era neppure più traffico d’oppio perché il Mullah aveva troncato la coltivazione del papavero (si veda il diagramma pubblicato dal Corriere il 12/6/2006: nel 2001, anno in cui rileva la decisione presa nel 2000, la produzione di oppio crolla quasi a zero, oggi l’Afghanistan produce il 93% dell’eroina).

E allora cosa dovremmo fare?

Sbaraccare e “lasciare che gli afgani sbaglino da soli”.

E invece restiamo.

Le ragioni le spiega, senza pudore, Sergio Romano sul Corriere (19/9): gli Stati Uniti devono salvare la faccia, i Paesi alleati mantenere il loro “prestigio internazionale”.

E così per la nostra bella faccia continuiamo ad ammazzare uomini, donne, bambini afgani a decine, forse a centinaia di migliaia perché dei morti afgani nessuno tiene il conto quasi che non avessero anche loro, come i nostri “ragazzi”, padri, madri, spose, figli.

Non sono morti uguali ai nostri.

Non appartengono alla “cultura superiore”.

We Shall Certainly Defeat the Government

In this interview, taken from the October 17, 2009 issue of Open, Ganapathi, General Secretary of the CPI (Maoist), talks about the party’s work in Lalgarh, its response to the government’s upcoming military offensive, the political situation in Nepal, the defeat of the LTTE, the contradictory nature of Islamist movements in the world today, and the role of the new chieftain of US imperialism.

At first sight, Mupalla Laxman Rao, who is about to turn 60, looks like a school teacher. In fact, he was one in the early 1970s in Andhra Pradesh’s Karimnagar district. In 2009, however, the bespectacled, soft-spoken figure is India’s Most Wanted Man. He runs one of the world’s largest Left insurgencies—a man known in Home Ministry dossiers as Ganapathi; a man whose writ runs large through 15 states. The supreme commander of CPI (Maoist) is a science graduate and holds a B Ed degree as well. He still conducts classes, but now they are on guerrilla warfare for other senior Maoists. He replaced the founder of the People’s War Group, Kondapalli Seetharaamiah, as the party’s general-secretary in 1991. Ganapathi is known to change his location frequently, and intelligence reports say he has been spotted in cities like Hyderabad, Kolkata and Kochi. After months of attempts, Ganapathi agreed to give his first-ever interview. Somewhere in the impregnable jungles of Dandakaranya, he spoke to RAHUL PANDITA on issues ranging from the Government’s proposed anti-Naxal offensive to Islamist Jihadist movements.

Q: Lalgarh has been described as the New Naxalbari by the CPI (Maoist). How has it become so significant for you?

A: The Lalgarh mass uprising has, no doubt, raised new hopes among the oppressed people and the entire revolutionary camp in West Bengal. It has great positive impact not only on the people of West Bengal but also on the people all over the country. It has emerged as a new model of mass movement in the country. We had seen similar types of movements earlier in Manipur, directed against Army atrocities and Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), in Kashmir, in Dandakaranya and to some extent in Orissa, after the Kalinganagar massacre perpetrated by the Naveen Patnaik government.

Then there have been mass movements in Singur and Nandigram but there the role of a section of the ruling classes is also significant. These movements were utilised by the ruling class parties for their own electoral interests. But Lalgarh is a more widespread and more sustained mass political movement that has spurned the leadership of all the parliamentary political parties, thereby rendering them completely irrelevant. The people of Lalgarh had even boycotted the recent Lok Sabha polls, thereby unequivocally demonstrating their anger and frustration with all the reactionary ruling class parties. Lalgarh also has some distinctive features such as a high degree of participation of women, a genuinely democratic character and a wider mobilisation of Adivasis. No wonder, it has become a rallying point for the revolutionary-democratic forces in West Bengal.

Q: If it is a people’s movement, how did Maoists get involved in Lalgarh?

A: As far as our party’s role is concerned, we have been working in Paschim Midnapur, Bankura and Purulia, in what is popularly known as Jangalmahal since the 1980s. We fought against the local feudal forces, against the exploitation and oppression by the forest officials, contractors, unscrupulous usurers and the goondaism of both the CPM and Trinamool Congress. The ruling CPM, in particular, has become the chief exploiter and oppressor of the Adivasis of the region, and it has unleashed its notorious vigilanté gangs called Harmad Vahini on whoever questions its authority. With the State authority in its hands, and with the aid of the police, it is playing a role worse than that of the cruel landlords in other regions of the country.

Given this background, anyone who dares to fight against oppression and exploitation by the CPM can win the respect and confidence of the people. Since our party has been fighting uncompromisingly against the atrocities of the CPM goons, it naturally gained the confidence and respect of the people of the region.

The police atrocities in the wake of the landmine blast on 2 November [in 2008, from which West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had a narrow escape] acted as the trigger that brought the pent-up anger of the masses into the open. This assumed the form of a long-drawn mass movement, and our party played the role of a catalyst.

Q: But not so long ago, the CPM was your friend. You even took arms and ammunition from it to fight the Trinamool Congress. This has been confirmed by a Politburo member of CPI (Maoist) in certain interviews. And now you are fighting the CPM with the help of the Trinamool. How did a friend turn into a foe and vice-versa?

A: This is only partially true. We came to know earlier that some ammunition was taken by our local cadre from the CPM unit in the area. There was, however, no understanding with the leadership of the CPM in this regard. Our approach was to unite all sections of the oppressed masses at the lower levels against the goondaism and oppression of Trinamool goons in the area at that time. And since a section of the oppressed masses were in the fold of the CPM at that time, we fought together with them against Trinamool. Still, taking into consideration the overall situation in West Bengal, it was not a wise step to take arms and ammunition from the CPM even at the local level when the contradiction was basically between two sections of the reactionary ruling classes.

Our central committee discussed this, criticised the comrade responsible for taking such a decision, and directed the concerned comrades to stop this immediately. As regards taking ammunition from the Trinamool Congress, I remember that we had actually purchased it not directly from the Trinamool but from someone who had links with the Trinamool. There will never be any conditions or agreements with those selling us arms. That has been our understanding all along. As regards the said interview by our Politburo member, we will verify what he had actually said.

Q: What are your tactics now in Lalgarh after the massive offensive by the Central and state forces?

A: First of all, I wish to make it crystal clear that our party will spearhead and stand firmly by the side of the people of Lalgarh and entire Jangalmahal, and draw up tactics in accordance with the people’s interests and

mandate. We shall spread the struggle against the State everywhere and strive to win over the broad masses to the side of the people’s cause. We shall fight the State offensive by mobilising the masses more militantly against the police, Harmad Vahini and CPM goons. The course of the development of the movement, of course, will depend on the level of consciousness and preparedness of the people of the region. The party will take this into consideration while formulating its tactics. The initiative of the masses will be released fully.

Q: The Government has termed Lalgarh a ‘laboratory’ for anti-Naxal operations. Has your party also learnt any lessons from Lalgarh?

A: Yes, our party too has a lot to learn from the masses of Lalgarh. Their upsurge was beyond our expectations. In fact, it was the common people, with the assistance of advanced elements influenced by revolutionary politics, who played a crucial role in the formulation of tactics. They formed their own organisation, put forth their charter of demands, worked out various novel forms of struggle, and stood steadfast in the struggle despite the brutal attacks by the police and the social-fascist Harmad gangs. The Lalgarh movement has the support of revolutionary and democratic forces not only in West Bengal but in the entire country. We are appealing to all revolutionary and democratic forces in the country to unite to fight back the fascist offensive by the Buddhadeb government in West Bengal and the UPA Government at the Centre. By building the broadest fighting front, and by adopting appropriate tactics of combining the militant mass political movement with armed resistance of the people and our PLGA (People’s Liberation Guerilla Army), we will defeat the massive offensive by the Central-state forces. I cannot say more than this at the present juncture.

Q: The Centre has declared an all-out war against Maoists by branding the CPI (Maoist) a terrorist organisation and imposing an all-India ban on the party. How has it affected your party?

A : Our party has already been banned in several states of India. By imposing the ban throughout the country, the Government now wants to curb all our open activities in West Bengal and a few other states where legal opportunities exist to some extent. The Government wants to use this draconian UAPA [Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act] to harass whoever dares to raise a voice against fake encounters, rapes and other police atrocities on the people residing in Maoist-dominated regions. Anyone questioning the State’s brutalities will now be branded a terrorist.

The real terrorists and biggest threats to the country’s security are none other than Manmohan Singh, Chidambaram, Buddhadeb, other ruling class leaders and feudal forces who terrorise the people on a daily basis.

The UPA Government had declared, as soon as it assumed power for the second time, that it would crush the Maoist ‘menace’ and began pouring in huge funds to the states for this purpose. The immediate reason behind this move is the pressure exerted by the comprador bureaucratic bourgeoisie and the imperialists, particularly US imperialists, who want to plunder the resources of our country without any hindrance. These sharks aspire to swallow the rich abundant mineral and forest wealth in the vast contiguous region stretching from Jangalmahal to north Andhra. This region is the wealthiest as well as the most underdeveloped part of our country. These sharks want to loot the wealth and drive the Adivasi people of the region to further impoverishment.

Another major reason for the current offensive by the ruling classes is the fear of the rapid growth of the Maoist movement and its increasing influence over a significant proportion of the Indian population. The Janatana Sarkars in Dandakaranya and the revolutionary people’s committees in Jharkhand, Orissa and parts of some other states have become new models of genuine people’s democracy and development. The rulers want to crush these new models of development and genuine democracy, as these are emerging as the real alternative before the people of the country at large.

Q: The Home Ministry has made preparations for launching a long-term battle against Maoists. A huge force will be soon trying to wrest away areas from your control. How do you plan to confront this offensive?
