Are You a Victim of Hurry Sickness

A central element of lifestyle management is the skill to creatively balance achievement and work success with leisure activities, family life and social involvements.

Another critical aspect is the ability to feel comfortable at work and at home and to enjoy the experience of whatever is being done at that moment.

But nowadays, most of us are obsessed with getting results or completing one’s task. When task completion becomes more important than enjoying and understanding the work or activity one is doing at the given moment, a sure victim of “hurry sickness” is born.

The resultant constant sense of urgency is the trap of hurry sickness. One rushes to “get things done” to the point where it becomes an obsession.

Breaking this syndrome requires that you learn to enjoy experiences for the pleasure they give. When you gain pleasure from an experience, there is no need to get things done painstakingly.

Enjoy experiences, not rewards, and things will get done automatically without any constant stressful sense of urgency.

As defined from a psychological perspective, Hurry Sickness is:

“A pervasive and progressively urgent need to complete task in order to obtain rewards at completion without regard for other aspects of the work experience and by using maladaptive time strategies.”

They key causal factor in hurry sickness is the progressive need for task completion.

Enjoying what you are doing is neglected with a morbid urge to getting it done as quickly as possible, no matter what the activity.

The obsessive need for task completion extends to non-work involvements and activities like eating, playing, romance, making love, sex, leisure, having fun, loafing, taking a stroll, recreation, entertainment, leisure, sports, pastimes, hobbies, holidaying, exercising, lazing around, dozing, enjoying music, cooking, gardening, meditating, enjoying “doing nothing” and delightful timepass, what you consider “wasting your time” with your family, wife, kids, pet dog, friends…

This attitude of Hurry Sickness interferes with the enjoyment of these activities and experiences because of the persistent inclination to hurry up and finish it off.

Getting things done has become such a strong need because the payoffs or rewards for completion have assumed primary importance.

Your work experience has taught you that rewards always come at the end of the activity after you have put forth great effort to achieve a goal. You do not realize that happiness is not a destination but the manner of traveling.

Not only do you feel a sense of personal satisfaction from your achievements, but tangible rewards, such as promotion, cash incentives, awards, and advancements are given to you as well. With time, these rewards have become clearly linked with your self-esteem.

Each time you “succeed”, your ego, your inner self, sends a message to you which says, “You have done well. You are a commendable person because you succeeded again.” Your need for this kind of reassurance has become stronger than you would care to admit.

Time-Urgency quickly becomes a strong internal driving force towards task completion. Your life becomes a frenzy of completing one task after another. You are obsessed with time and wasting any of it becomes almost a mortal sin.

You strive to maximize your productivity by using time ever more efficiently, but you also have a sense that you are controlled by time and you don’t like it. Time is both your challenge and your enemy. A telling sign of hurry sickness is that even while relaxing, you are constantly fighting time-urgency and this that causes you unrest and never allows you to totally “switch off”.

Another way to seek to increase your output is to adopt maladaptive time-strategies. These questionable tactics do help you get more done over the short run, but you pay a heavy emotional price.

You now do everything faster, you have learned to “multitask” or “double up,” to do two or more things at once, and you are constantly preparing for what is coming next before you are finished what you are doing now.

The insidious trap is that you get something done quickly even when there is no reason to get anything done at all.

You hurry when there is no need to hurry – even when you have all the time in the world.

Because of your emphasis on task completion, you focus on finishing without regard for other holistic aspects of the experience.

In short, you have lost the ability to enjoy yourself while doing anything because of your incessant drive to get to the finish line.

Because you are afflicted by Hurry Sickness, you have lost the ability to emotionally rejuvenate yourself. Chronic fatigue and pessimism are symptoms of this malady.

SIGNS AND SIGNALS OF HURRY SICKNESS

Here are some behavioral signs, symptoms and signals that indicate hurry sickness:

1. Eating.

You now eat in the office while continuing to work or you just skip meals altogether. You multitask while eating. At home, you eat fast, gulp your food, finish meals well ahead of everyone else and eat in bigger bites without savoring the taste of food. Sharing pleasantries at the table is minimal because you cannot sit long enough. Ask yourself – are you eating mindfully and relishing every morsel of your food?

2. Sex.

Relaxed romantic sex and unhurried love-making is but a pleasant memory. The frequency has reduced and even when you do indulge in sex, it is a quick encounter and you are off to sleep or on to some other more “important” or “urgent” activity. Sex is less spontaneous and more mechanical these days. Love-making has become another hurry-up-and-get-it-done-with activity. Worse, you often indulge in “faking it” in order to get it over with in a hurry so you can quickly get on with the more “important” and “productive” things in life – your “high priority” activities!

3. Communications.

Your communication patterns now focus squarely on the negative. Feedback to others emphasizes mistakes and failings and you rarely compliment or offer sincere support to anyone these days. You don’t take the time any more for pleasant chat with family and colleagues. You have stopped listening. You make demands instead of working cooperatively with others or team-building. And hey, are you on your cell-phone most of the time?

4. Leisure.

You put aside less time for relaxation and you enjoy it less when you actually try to relax. Time-off is now more of a hassle than it is worth. When you sit still, you feel uncomfortable almost immediately. You have lost the ability to “do nothing” – it’s difficult for you to loosen up and enjoy an idle hour relaxing, doing nothing. Ask yourself why you work – reflect, contemplate, think about the fundamental reason why you work and realization will dawn upon you that the primary reason you work is to be able to enjoy your leisure, so why aren’t you taking a vacation every day and learning how to enjoy your leisure with full awareness?

5. Family.

Family members now “report” events to you, but you share little of yourself with them. You and your spouse argue more than you talk. The satisfactions of family life have diminished in quality and quantity. Your impatience is just as strong at home as in the office.

HOW TO CURE HURRY SICKNESS

Because you have hurry sickness, your initial tendency is to effect and expedite your “cure” in a hurry too.

But this hurry-up-and-get-it-done attitude may actually sabotage your recovery. What is required is patience, perspective and the ability to deal with setbacks in healthier ways.

It is easy to blame hurry sickness on the pressures of your job, the stress of daily living and what you have to do to survive in the fast paced world of today and on the insensitivity of the complex modern world. While each of these perceptions has a grain of truth in it, the fact remains that most of the responsibility for hurry sickness lies within you.

Your drive to get ahead is the real root of the problem and the fact is that you have lost all sense of perspective. Until you accept personal responsibility for your present state, you will not be in a position to confront and reverse the real mischief, damage and harm caused by hurry sickness.

Remember the well-known story of the hare and the tortoise.

Decelerate your life a bit, slow down, walk leisurely instead of driving and do not carry or switch off your cell-phone where you can, don’t multitask, do one thing at a time with full awareness and mindfulness and learn to enjoy the experience of whatever you are doing.

This post has been spawned from my interest in pocket-sized tools, and trying to build the ultimate handy set of keys for my work keys. I have a few tools in my collection already, and I’ll write a short review of those, as well as showing some tools off my wish list. This list ignores multitools I have reviewed previously. Most of them are far too big to be included in this post anyway.

I recently got my hands on a Gerber Artifact, which looked awesome. It has a small pry bar, Bottle opener, “x-acto” style replaceable blade, and a Philips head screwdriver on the tip. I had nothing like it in my collection, so i put in an order

When my order arrived, I have to admit I was a little disappointed with the build quality. The main body appears to be cast, and its hard to fault that, however the locking mechanism and pivot were a little ordinary. The blade is difficult to open and close. The pivot seems overly stiff. I’m not sure if this is the fault of the product, or if the tool was tightened after manufacture.

This brings me to my next point, the condition of the screws on the pivot and the ones holding the locking mechanism in place. It appears they have been abused somewhat. the torx screw in the pivot looks like it has had an allen key used in it to tighten it. To the tools credit this may have been done at the store I bought it from. Next, the two Torx screws holding the locking spring in look as if they had been beaten with a hammer, as well as having an allen key in them (the edges are somewhat distorted)

Really, when you consider the price which was paid, I can’t really fault the tool (it was $10 plus postage in a package of other stuff). It is solid, and very usable

Pocket Wrench II

The Pocket Wrench II is a neat little tool. It seems simple, with no moving parts, but has several useful features, such as a pry bar, a rule with inches and centimeters, and its main feature, the “universal” wrench, or as we would call it over here, spanner. I am yet to own one of these, but eventually, I would love to get my hands on one of these for my collection.

This one isn’t a specific tool, its a whole person. Peter Atwood is probably considered “THE GUY” when it comes to making small key sized multitools. his tools are better described as fine crafted works of art, and they are very exclusive. Peter releases the tools in small batches, which he announces on his blog, and the batches never last too long before they are all sold out. You really have to be on the ball to get one of his creations. I don’t own any of his tools yet, but eventually I might splash out for one, if i can catch  a batch with some avaliable

Swiss+tech Utili Key 6 in 1

the Utili-key is probably one of the first on mini, on keys tools I added to my collection. I attribute the discovery of this fun little tool to my sister, who actually found it first. I eventually found myself one, and has been on my keys ever since.

 Swiss+Tech Micro Plus

along side the Utili-key, I have added a Swiss+tech Micro-Plus to my keys also. these are a little pair of folding pliers, where, as you can see from the image, the handles are made up of a selection of screwdriver ends. The pliers on this critter are not in any way, needle point, they are quite wide, and short. The wide and short jaws come with the design, but can limit some uses of the tool. the biggest issue I have with this tool is that when folded out into pliers, there is no way of locking the handle into position. Again, this is really dictated by the simplistic design of the tools, and it is something you should be able to deal with.

Swiss+tech make a few other mini tools – mostly variants fo the miniature pliers with more features. when I get around to it, I wouldn’t mind upgrading the micro plus to a Micro Max, which appears to be mostly an addition to some different sized screw driver bits as part of the handle

So there we have it. Short, and far from exhaustive, but I hope someone out there found it helpful or interesting.

I have a domain mydomain.com with some sub level domains like

Now I need a self signed certificate for all these domains because I want to use them over HTTPS. There are some steps to do this. First of all: you don’t need for this propose your own root certificate. You should replace all occurence of mydomain.com with your own domain name and sub domains.

On the gentoo server where the apache should host the domains, I have to create the certificate. I do following steps:

1. Generate a private key

   openssl genrsa -des3 -out server.key 1024
   

2. Generate a CSR (Certificate Signing Request)

   openssl req -new -key mydomain.key -out mydomain.csr
   
   Country Name (2 letter code) [DE]:DE
   State or Province Name (full name) [Sachsen]:Sachsen
   Locality Name (eg, city) [Leipzig]:Leipzig

3. Remove Passphrase from Key

   cp mydomain.key mydomain.key.org

4. Generating a Self-Signed Certificate

   To include all required subdomains a extensions file must be used. For example I have created a file /home/waffel/ssl/mydomain_extensions with following content:

Hello there! I have been busy these last couple of weeks. On Tuesday, November 10, the very much anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was released to distributors all over the globe. Yesterday was Veteran’s day and I made a trip to Palos Verdes Peninsula here in the Los Angeles, California area. Right now, I am sitting here at my girlfriend’s school in Fullerton updating my blog! So in this post, you all will get 2 updates in 1. Ready? Here we go.

MODERN WARFARE 2

As you all know from my post a while back, I love the game Modern Warfare. I even shared my thoughts with you on Modern Warfare 2. Well, it was greatly anticipated among the millions of gamers out there, and it was because Infinity Ward did an amazing job with their PR and marketing. I had business law class on Monday night from 6-10 and when class got out, I remember walking to my car and counting down until midnight. I even saw the guy sitting in front of me in class checking the Modern Warfare 2 forum! Man, I was excited. I went home and the release in Los Angeles was even featured on the news. Fourzerotwo (aka Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward community manager), was present at the time of the New York release party, and on his twitter he said that he gave the first two guys in line – who by the way camped out in line for 8 hours – exclusive Xbox 360 Modern Warfare 2 consoles. Lucky guys. You see, from a business perspective, you really notice and identify that this kind of hype for a product is the result of an amazing marketing staff. Thousands of people around the world were waiting in line until midnight to purchase their copy of the game; from Los Angeles, to New York, to London, and Europe. As for myself, my brother’s birthday is tomorrow, just 3 days after the release date, and so I thought I had to wait until then for his friends to give it to him; the thought of waiting 3 whole days killed me! However, the next morning I awake to the doorbell, it was the mail man. My brother collects the mail from him and turns to me and says, “Do you know what this is?!”. I stop and think about it for a minute – still distorted from just waking up, and reply “Oh My God! GIVE ME!!”. He then ripped open the package and we let out a *sigh* as the beautiful  packaging and art work on the box presented itself. It read “Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2″, on the back “The sequel to the best selling first-person shooter”, which is an undisputed claim and very well supported as evident by the amount of publicity.

We put the game in the PS3 console right away. We watched the movie introduction and were simply in awe by the amazing graphics, effects, and theatrical-like presentation. We started the campaign around 1PM and beat the game by 6PM, it took us about 5 hours. I know, 5 hours for a highly anticipated game? You wait months and you finish in hours? Anyone who has played it already knows that it was well worth the wait, and if played on the highest difficulty, is very challenging. The storyline is amazing and you can tell that it was very well thought out by Infinity Ward. The introduction of new characters, the reintroduction of old characters, the betrayal; it all comes together to evoke genuine emotion in the player. Overall, I am very pleased with Modern Warfare 2 and believe it has surely lived up to its hype. Hats off to Infinity Ward, probably one of the best game developers out there. Modern Warfare 2 lives up to its expectations and continues smoothly from the first game. I can’t wait for the next one. Modern Warfare  3. I doubt this is a spoiler, but it’s pretty obvious by the end of Modern Warfare 2 that Infinity Ward intends to make another one. So until then, let’s keep ranking up, see you in the war zone!

PALOS VERDES PENINSULA

The day after I played Modern Warfare 2 day and night, was Veteran’s day – supposedly a day off – a holiday. Not for me! I had to drive to school to attend a mandatory field trip to Palos Verdes Peninsula for my Geology class. Lame! It was about an hour drive down the 110 harbor freeway, we took the Pacific Coast Highway exit and I realized that this is around my grandma’s area and my uncle’s restaurant (just down PCH on Oak). I’ve even been to Redondo Beach. Little did I know, just up the hill was Palos Verdes. It’s about a 10-15 minute drive up the hill before you hit anything even remotely interesting… Very quaint and secluded from the city and major businesses. There are lots of ma and pop stores, those kind you see when you go on vacation to Hawaii or Catalina or something. Palos Verdes is a very, very nice area, mostly composed of homes – not businesses. There are gas stations, a couple of markets, and some businesses, but hardly any major chain firms. Up the hill are nice mansions, probably multi-million dollar homes. They sit on the edge of elevated cliffs, with 100 yard-long driveways (a whole football field), no exaggeration. One stop was at this area that overlooked the coastline and Donald Trump’s golf course. From there you could also see Catalina Island in the midst, beautiful. Although these homes were amazing and at an ideal location just short of paradise, I would never want to live there. There are two reasons why. First is, there is hardly anything to do up there, I like the city. Second is, my professor was telling us that about 15-20 years ago, the peninsula was actually moving into the Pacific Ocean at a rate of 10 inches per day. It’s still constantly sliding off into the ocean, but the rate has slowed down significantly. However, they are still minimizing construction on the area for preemptive precautions of causing more movement in the land. Although I was bummed about not being able to stay home to play Modern Warfare 2, I took the experience and used it as motivation to succeed, especially when seeing all those enormous homes. Maybe I’ll buy a vacation home there one day .

- Stiti ca emisiunea e facatura?

- Nu ma intereseaza, ete ce face.. ete…

Mda… Ne prostim. E mai frumos sa judeci si sa arati cu degetul si sa uiti de problemele existentiale, cum ar fi ca a crescut somajul, ca poate maine nu mai ai serviciu, ca e criza, ca ai copilul in oras si s-a facut ora 12 noaptea si el n-a venit, ca fumeaza, ca se drogheaza, ce mai conteaza… ne uitam la “Fata lui tata”, macar fii-sa nu e ca astea din emisiune.

Am asa o alergie la OTV si Dan Diaconescu. Tampeste poporul. Jur. Numai crime, numai tampenii… si culmea, oamenii savureaza fiecare minut, stau nemiscati, gospodinele nu mai calca, nu mai fac mancare, nu mai respira, babele nu mai mor ca poate pierd urmatorul episod din Elodia. De ce trebuie sa ne intereseze ce se intampla in casa sau in viata altora? Ba mai mult, de ce trebuie sa dai sms din amaratul tau de salariu sau din pensia mica? Sa ii umfli curul lui Diaconescu? Refuz. Asa cum refuz sa joc si la prostiile de bingo si loto. Niste prosteli pe fatza pe banii mei. PAS.

De cand cu emisiunea “100% Adevarat”, tot primesc sms-uri cum ca am de castigat nu stiu cate masini, nu trebuie decat sa trimit un sms de 3 euro. DOAR 3 EURO. Eu stiu ca noi suntem poporul care asteptam castigul sa pice din cer, nu sa muncim pentru el si pentru ca sunt muuulti, prea multi “Pica para malaiata in gura lui Natafleata”, la pariu ca se trimit la sms-uri de se blocheaza aparatura, milioane de euro. Dau si ei vreo 300.000 euro pe masini si ce mai pun ei in joc si restul in contul lui Diaconescu. Nu, multumesc. Nu de buna voie si nesilita de nimeni. Nu cat sunt in deplinatatea facultatilor mintale. Nu pot sa inteleg. Setea de castig usor ne intuneca mintea. Crimele, violenta, prostia altora si naivitatea lor ne fac sa uitam de defectele si problemele noastre. Ba se zambeste pe sub mustati si se simte asa o implinire, o senzatie ca ei sunt mai “smecheri”, mai superiori, macar in lumea lor… in lumea scenariilor de emisiuni de tampit … ca “asta e mai prost decat mine”, “fata mea e cuminte, nu ca asta”, “nevasta-mea nu e ca asta”, “uite ca mai e cineva care are televizor d-asta”….

Apple just released their new update of Snow Leopard. It fixes a rather large problem that has to due with data loss related to guest accounts. it also corrects a problem with multi-touch expose features, one i have currently been upset about, and has been one of my main gripes since upgrading from 10.5.x Leopard.
