Kodachrome gone. I began my career as a restoration professional in a motion picture laboratory. My days would often begin trying to discover some “new” stock on the bench before me. Handling and developing techniques for the preservation of “lost” processed nitrate films such as “Dufay Color”, Sonochrome”, “Multicolor”, and 3-strip Technicolor, occupied my brain and started a love and obsession with film that lasts to this day.

In my research I remember the day that I discovered that the Multicolor process used depleted Uranium as an ingredient in one of the color passes. That was one of my first adult experiences with mortality. In those early days of preservation one would become quite intimate with the film to save it. It did not matter to me then, the film was old and cool and it needed to be saved – damn the consequences.

Now, 20 years later ( plus or minus 6 months), the news of Kodachrome’s demise is not suprising. The process is toxic: both in production and in the development of the film. Yet I cannot escape the nagging thought that in 70 years, most digital still images taken in this era will be lost. Who out there has really migrated their ten-year old jpegs’s to a format other than CD or hard drive (and will that CD and hard drive be playable)? Yet Kodachrome images from the earliest days of the format continue to look striking, even without special treatment.

I hope I am wrong about this. Bye Kodachrome…….
