Le videoproiezioni sono “mappate” su di una struttura triangolare formata da 15 piramidi su 3 livelli di altezza; vengono videoproiettati elementi geometrici che creano distorsioni visive alla struttura, luci finte che ingannano con giochi di volumi e poi sequenze di colori che illuminano le facce delle piramidi. La ricerca di una dimensione diversa da quella tridimensionale, spinge a sfondare ogni involucro ambientale per suggerire una realtà più complessa: spigoli e facce piramidali continuamente sfuggenti che si ripropongono per effetto delle videoproiezioni in perpetuo avvicendamento su di essi. L’audio realizzato da Luca “Phutura” sincronizzato con il movimento delle forme accompagna la visione: allo sguardo dello spettatore la struttura tradizionale dell’ambiente appare mutata e viene suggerita una rottura/apertura verso nuove forme e dimensioni. Einer meiner Mitschüler erwähnte eines Tages am Mittagstisch, dass mit einem Programm Bilder generiert werden können, wenn man jede Kombination von Pixelfarben zusammensetzt: Sei es ein Gesicht oder ein Baum oder ein Tisch, alles kann generiert werden. So liesse sich theoretisch ein Programm schreiben, mit welchem man solange zufällig Bilder generieren kann, bis etwas Schlaues herauskäme, d.h. etwas Darstellendes.
Die Theorie, man könne alle möglichen Bilder generieren und daraus die darstellenden Bilder herauslesen, wurde ziemlich schnell verworfen: Selbst bei der Annahme, dass so ein 300×200 Pixel grosses Bild eine Dateigrösse von nur einem Byte habe, kamen wir auf folgende Werte:

256 mögliche Kombinationen pro (Bitmap-)Farbkanal
256^3 = 16′777′216 mögliche Kombinationen pro (Bitmap-)Pixel
16′777′216^(300×200) = ??? mögliche Kombinationen pro (Bitmap)-Bild

(das ??? ist ein Wert mit über 100 Stellen)

In Anbetracht solcher Tatsachen kamen wir zum Schluss, dass uns mit grosser Wahrscheinlichkeit nicht genügend Speicherplatz zur Verfügung stehen würde, um solch ein Projekt durchzuführen.
Nachdem wir nach und nach die Bildergrösse und die Farbanzahl herunterschraubten, landeten wir schliesslich bei Schwarzweiss-Bildern und einer Grösse von 50×50 Pixel, doch auch da liess uns das leidige Schachfeldproblem nicht los. Wir berechneten als grösstes quadratisches Schwarzweiss-Bild, das sich auf meinem Taschenrechner (bis 9.999999999e99) noch darstellen lässt, 18×18 Pixel(3.147579257e97 Möglichkeiten).

Das ist frustrierend.

Nun gut, hier entwickelte ich meine Idee von Programmkunst: Man nehme eine Datei (wenn möglich keine Bilddatei) und stelle den Inhalt als Bild dar; hierzu wird lediglich ein Hex-Editor benötigt:

Vorbereitung

• Zieldatei auswählen
• Grösse der Zieldatei ermitteln
• Bildgrösse mittels Teiler der Zieldateigrösse bestimmen (z.B. bei 60′000 Bytes eine Bildgrösse von 300×200 Pixel)
• Mit einem Bildbearbeitungsprogramm der Wahl (MS Paint, Gimp, Photoshop, …) eine Bitmap-Grafik der gewünschten Grösse erstellen

Beachten: Es muss eine Bitmap-Datei sein, da sie unkomprimiert ist.

Basis wechseln

• Mit einem Hex-Editor (BIEW, bvi, Emacs, …) das erstellte Bitmap öffnen
• Den Header des Bitmaps kopieren (die ersten 54 Bytes)
• Den kopierten Header vor die Bytefolge der Zieldatei einfügen (sollte die Copy-Paste-Aktion nicht möglich sein, kann man die Bytes auch abtippen, sind ja schliesslich nur 54 Bytes)
• Bild speichern
• Geniessen

Als Testobjekt musste bei mir die Windows-Version des Firefox-Crashreporters herhalten. Als Tools benutzte ich gHex und Gimp, und das Resultat sah folgendermassen aus:

Wie auf dem Screenshot vielleicht zu erkennen ist, habe ich sämtliche Nullbytes rausgelöscht, aus Angst, es könne etwas Unerwartetes passieren. Aber wie es scheint, ist die Bytefolge doch nicht relevant.

Doch was will ich damit jetzt erklären?

Dateien lassen sich als Bilder tarnen.

Angenommen, wir wollen einen Webhoster oder sonst eine Plattform nutzen, die nur Multimedia-Inhalte wie Bilder und Videos akzeptiert, um unsere (nicht-Multimedia-)Files dort zu lagern. Ein Umbenennen der Dateierweiterung wird nicht funkionieren, die Hosts fressen das Format nicht. Aber als Bilder getarnt funktioniert es. Das ist insbesondere praktisch, wenn man Dateien kostenlos ins Internet laden und verbreiten möchte.
Allerdings ist die “Datei > Bild > Internet > Bild > Datei”-Geschichte relativ umständlich und nicht für die Allgemeinanwendung empfohlen.

Nichtsdestotrotz: Vielleicht findet sich hier auf meinem Blog eines Tages ein ominöses, nichtsbedeutendes Smiley-Icon, hinter welchem sich ein Programmcode oder ein Zip-File versteckt. Und dann heisst es: OPEN SHARE!

The worldwide success of Susan Boyle’s debut album, I Dreamed A Dream, released on November 23rd, is the latest milestone for the Scottish church volunteer from Blackburn, West Lothian.  She stunned audiences with her rendition of I Dreamed A Dream on Britain’s Got Talent.  And even though Susan placed second in the final competition, she won the hearts of fans around the world, including celebrities such as Demi Moore and Elaine Paige.

The Simpsons often deliver great satire on American culture but when it comes to foreigners, the result is rather deceiving. The fifth episode of season 21, called The Devil Wears Nada, is a new example. A brief parody of Carla Bruni and Nicolas Sarkozy. The French First lady appear as a nymphomaniac addicted to wine. Nicolas Sarkozy is at the Elysée, eating some camembert.

Out title, paraphrased from Jeff Gomez’ paraphrasing of  Henry Jenkins in Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide, as included in Nick de la Mare’s article “The Power of Transmedia Experiences - Another approach to knitting narratives together” in Creativity (online), (phew!), is not really anything new to artists, and seemingly not that new to media “creative” types (read advertising, PR and other marketing communications ilks), either.  That doesn’t mean that it’s not interesting; it is.  It’s essentially what “multi-media art” has been about for, well, forever.

De la Mare’s take on it makes it all, naturally enough, more easily discussed, designed, manipulated, produced and, in the end, billed to clients (the cost of which will be included in the products these “clients” sell, and so, in the products we buy from them, meaning everything we buy).  The technology is here (or there), or most of it is, and our collective technology/media behavior is certainly about up to par.  So, in the probably not particularly distant future, we will no longer see a TV show made into a movie made into a video game with all of the associated products (t-shirts, and all that) developed along the way.  What we will see, it seems, is the use of each of these media to tell their part of the story in their own quintessential way thus, in the end, offering us the aforementioned “richer narrative” and the, no doubt refreshing, opportunity to “immerse ourselves in other worlds”.

So churns the minds of those whose mission, so critical in this time of global economic crisis, is to motivate us to buy more things.  Rest assured, the future is in good hands.

However, and honestly, the simplicity of tone and “terminology” in the article offers perhaps a less abiguous way to look at and discuss the idea of “transmedia experience” as distinct from “multimedia experience”, and that’s nice.  Isn’t it.

From the California Beat photography collection, Bay Area Snapshots is an occassional glimpse at daily life in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Ever since Windows Vista came out, Aero Glass has been one of my favorite features in the operating system. With the advent of Windows 7 which also included the Aero Glass, I has been looking out for multimedia player that fully utilize Aero Glass. (Personally I would like software developer fully utilize Aero Glass) Not to mention the nice looking eye candy, but it does make me feel that the software is an integrated part of the Windows, which is why I always prefer software that using Aero Glass.

With some deep searching and stumble upon, I have found two nice looking players (one requires mod) suitable to my taste, Foobar2000 (Audio player with mod) and Splayer (Video player).

Foobar2000 (with Foolars2 Glass mod)

I believe most of the computer users will not find Foobar2000 a stranger. Foobar2000 is famous for their lightweight, high quality sound output, and also their highly customizable interface. By default, Foobar2000 doesn’t have the skin using the Aero Glass. But after some findings, I have found one very nice looking mod for foobar2000. Check the screenshots below:

Isn’t nice and simple? This is actually a mod compiled and done by heroshade, which you can download it from his deviantart website here, which included all the components you needed for the skin. He also included an instruction note for installing the skin, so you can’t go wrong with it. Please note that the skin will only works on Foobar2000 version 0.9.5.3 and below, and I tried to install it in the latest version of Foobar2000, but it doesn’t work at all (something to do with the PanelsUI thingy), so if you wanted to try this skin on Foobar2000, get the older version of foobar2000 here (0.9.5.2).

SPlayer

Correct me if I am wrong but Splayer is developed by a chinese. I was once a codec pack fan, which I always get my computer installed with either Klite codec pack or Shark007 codec pack, which serves me well during the XP period. However, with the changing of operating system to Windows 7 64 Bit, I started to look for alternative because I wanted a player that can play-it-all without the need of installing codec pack. I tried shark007’s codec pack on my Windows 7, but it crashes my Windows explorer whenever it generating preview for all my videos, so I decided to put it away and give SPlayer a go.

SPlayer is a very simple, yet have a very strong codec supports, with of course, very nice interface. I am aware that VLC Media Player does support multiple video format as well, but I still prefer SPlayer due to the eye candies. (Who doesn’t like beautiful stuff?) With the very simple, half transparent control panel of the player (Screenshot below), SPlayer able to play almost all sort of video format, and give you the quite a lot of options for your viewing experience. It does have some pretty new experimenting features, including the Intelligent Normalizer (which help you to increase the volume automatically when it detected the voice/sound of the video is too soft), and transparent control (which make your whole video transparent) which I haven’t found a practical usage, but they are pretty interesting features.

Why Splayer? For me, I’d go for it’s simple and nice interface, with Aero Glass support, and bunch of video enhancements made available to us during the playback. Not to mention it does provide us portable version of the SPlayer, which can be used without installation, especially good for those computers that disallow installation without administrator permission. But don’t get convinced by me, check out their official comparison, and you will know why SPlayer.

So what are you waiting for? Throw away any codec packs or outdated skinned video player, and go ahead download SPlayer and see for yourself here!

Editor’s note

Hope my introduction of these two software match your taste as well. Both software works perfectly for me and they just totally replaced my pervious multimedia software (Codec pack, GOM Player, TTPlayer) without much problem. I do hope more and more software developer are able to make use of the Aero Glass as it doesn’t only let the computer user enjoy the eye candy, but it does give a feeling that the software is integrated to the Windows. All hail to Aero Glass!

Sopcast es uno de los muchos programas para ver canales desde internet en tiempo real. Esta basado en tecnología P2P, por lo que no se saturan servidores ya que son los mismos usuarios de la red los que redistribuyen los datos.

Instalación de sopcast-player (sólo para Ubuntu 9.10):

add-apt-repository ppa:jason-scheunemann/ppa
apt-get update
apt-get install sopcast-player
Con esto ya tenemos nuestra aplicación totalmente funcional y siempre actualizada.

Nota: La lista de canales a veces no funciona por sobrecarga de los servidores, probar a otra hora.
