LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)– The Herbalife Family Foundation (HFF), a non-profit organization committed to helping vulnerable children, announces that it has teamed up with the SOS Children’s Villages, France, as part of the charity’s 2013 Fulfilment Through Sport program (PEPS).

The funds from the grant that establish this first Casa Herbalife program in France will be used to support the nutrition education element of the sports program, and in so doing will help to improve nutrition for children living at the SOS Children’s Villages orphanages.

The PEPS program was established to promote good physical condition and self-confidence through healthy, active living, including quality nutrition. In 2013, the PEPS program will target 48 young people from the 14 SOS Children’s Villages throughout the country, and will focus on three main areas: horse riding for teenagers aged between 13 and 15, multi-activities for teenagers aged between 14 and 17, and hiking for adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 18.

The Casa Herbalife program was established in 2005, to help bring good nutrition to children living in orphanages, after school centers, and other non-profit facilities. This marks the 92nd Casa Herbalife program worldwide and the 26th in Herbalife’s EMEA region. After the initial grants made by HFF, the organizations receive local financial and volunteer support from Herbalife Independent Distributors throughout France, as well as corporate employees.

By Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD, April 18, 2013

Want to shape up for summer? Don’t wait until the last minute! If you start now, you’ve got six weeks or so – plenty of time to see some serious results before swimsuit season starts.

I’m nudging you now, because many people have the tendency to put this off. As in, “I’m going on a surfing trip next week and I can’t be seen looking like this” A crash diet to take off a couple of pounds in a week might make you slightly less self-conscious in your board shorts, but if you really want to make some headway before swimsuit season, the time to start is now.

My summer shape-up plans got derailed when I pulled a muscle in my ribcage a few days ago. It hurts like crazy and I’m told it could take weeks to heal. Bench presses and sit-ups are out of the question…. as would be – except for the fact that they’re unavoidable – breathing, sneezing and rolling over in my sleep. (Actually, let me correct that last one. Right now, it’s less of a roll, and more like a three-point turn). So, it looks like I’ll be doing more lower body exercises for the next few weeks. But – assuming you haven’t hurt yourself like I did – you’ve got a good six weeks before summer starts, which is plenty of time to work on your beach body from head to toe. And to see some real results.

Six weeks until summer: that’s plenty of time to shape up

Here’s the thing: a safe and achievable rate of weight loss is about one or two pounds a week. In order to lose a pound in a week’s time, you need to tilt your calorie balance in the negative direction by about 500 calories per day. Since a pound of fat stores about 3500 calories, if you burn up 500 of those stored calories every day for a week, you’ll lose about a pound of fat. Larger people can often tip the balance a little further – coming up with a shortage or 750 or even 1000 calories a day to lose a bit more quickly.

Depending on your body size, that means that if you start now, you could lose 5 or 10 pounds by early June and that could be enough to give you a beach body by the start of summer. And, with a one-two punch of diet and exercise, six weeks is enough time to see some noticeable changes in your muscle tone and shape if you dedicate some serious time to your workouts.

Ready to start? Here are some diet tips to help you look your best by summer.

The best way to create your calorie ‘shortage’ is with a combination of diet and exercise. Don’t try to just do one or the other. For one thing, those whose calorie needs aren’t that high to start with may not be able to cut out 500 calories a day from their meals without cutting back too far (you shouldn’t go much below 1200 calories a day). And, if you try to cut too much, not only is it harder to pack all your nutrient needs into fewer calories – you may not have enough energy to exercise. Trying the ‘exercise only’ approach is tough too, because it takes a lot of exercise burn up 500 calories – like a solid hour of nonstop swimming.
Focus on eating the most ‘nutrient dense’ foods – those foods that give you the most nutrition for the fewest calories per bite. Vegetables top the list, followed by the lowest fat proteins (fish and shellfish, poultry breast, egg whites, fat-free dairy products, protein powder), followed by fruit and then whole grains.
Make sure to include some protein at every meal and snack. It will help keep you from getting too hungry in between meals.
Cut back on your whole grains for the first week or two to give yourself a little head start. You don’t want to cut them completely, but cutting back to just a serving or two each day can help you save a lot of calories. As long as you’re eating plenty of veggies and fruit, you should be getting enough carbohydrates to fuel your exercise.
Careful calorie counting is key, but it’s often one of the hardest things to do. This is why meal replacements work so well – they take the guesswork out of calorie counting because you know exactly how many calories are in them. Have a protein shake made with milk and fruit for two meals a day, then focus on veggies and protein for your third meal. Keep your snacks small and protein-packed (like a protein bar or a small carton of Greek yogurt) and you’ll keep your calorie-guesswork to a minimum.

By Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD, April 25, 2013

Another reason to eat protein at breakfast. Protein helps keep you full and satisfied until lunch – and a new study suggests it might even help curb snacking at night.

If you keep up with the latest in dietary advice, you can probably list a few reasons why protein is such an important nutrient. It’s necessary, of course, to help you build and maintain your muscle mass, and it’s also known to be a much better at filling you up than either fat or carbohydrate – which is why we suggest that people aim to have a good source of protein at each meal or snack. The idea is simply this: high carb meals don’t stay with you, while higher protein meals can help control hunger from one meal to the next. But here’s something else… a recent study by Heather Leidy1 suggests that a high protein breakfast not only helps control your appetite until the next meal, it might reduce unhealthy snacking in the evening.

Recognizing that adolescents are notorious breakfast-skippers – and that breakfast skipping is associated with weight gain – researchers at the University of Missouri studied the effects of different breakfast meals in 20 overweight teenaged girls (who typically ate breakfast no more than twice a week).

The girls were asked to do the following – in no particular order. One week, they skipped breakfast each day, one week they had a high protein breakfast every day (35 grams of protein) and one week they had a lower protein breakfast every day (13 grams of protein). What the researchers wanted to know was how the different meals (or no meal) affected their appetite, hunger levels between meals, food cravings and evening snacking.

To measure all these things, the girls completed questionnaires about their level of hunger and satisfaction during the day, and they had brain scans done just before dinner. The scans allowed the researchers to see how certain areas of the brain – in particular, those that are involved in food cravings – responded when the girls were shown pictures of appealing foods. Then, the girls went home with a cooler full of goodies – a huge assortment of salty snacks, candy, ice cream, fruit, pizza, macaroni and cheese – and told they could eat as much as they wanted during the evening.

When all was said and done, the high protein breakfast had several advantages over the low protein one (and certainly, over no breakfast at all). For one thing, the girls said the high protein breakfast was more filling – no surprise there. But during the week they ate the high protein breakfast, their brain activity was different, too – there was less “activity” in the areas of the brain responsible for food cravings – and the girls ate less high-fat, high-sugar foods after dinner.

This is an interesting twist on the protein story – suggesting that a high protein breakfast not only helps keep you full until lunch, but may even help curb your intake over the course of the day. Getting in 35 grams of protein at one time – as they did in the study – might be a bit of a challenge, but you can get close – 25 grams is actually fairly easy to do.

Want to up your protein at breakfast?

Here are some meals to try – all of which will give you about 25 grams of protein.

- A protein shake with nonfat milk. A portion of milk provides about 10 grams of protein, and you can adjust the protein powder in your shake to boost the protein up
- A portion of plain nonfat cottage cheese with fruit and a handful of almonds
- An omelet made with 2 whole eggs or 4 egg whites, filled with veggies and an ounce of low fat mozzarella cheese
- Cook rolled oats in nonfat milk then top then stir in protein powder after it’s cooked. Top with a dab of almond butter
- Spread some nonfat cream cheese on 100% whole grain toast and top with 3 ounces smoked salmon

Of course, this is only one recent study, and its conclusions are not yet the state of the science on this topic, but there is good support in the scientific literature for the general proposition that protein intake under the right circumstances produce feelings of satiety.

Vitamin-enriched waters put two good things together to make healthiest drink ever, right? Sounds good in theory, but vitamin waters contain far more than their name implies. Yes, they can give you your daily dose of nutrients, just like a multivitamin, but it comes with a side of sugar and calories you may not have known you ordered. A single bottle of vitamin-enriched water usually contains 2.5 servings or more when you read the nutrition label. That means you’re consuming more than twice the calories and sugar listed on the label when you drink the whole thing.

instead: Water it down. Water should be your drink of choice. If you don’t like the flavor of plain water, spruce it up without calories by adding lime, lemon or orange wedges to your glass.

I don’t find skin care posts particularly exciting, so apologies in advance to people like me. But I’m a little bit at my wit’s end here because people seem to have learned about the awesome that is my face scrub so I might as well write about it. And by ‘my’ face scrub, I mean Dermalogica’s junk. I’d certainly be rich if I was selling that stuff because it’s almost the same price per ounce as gold, but hyperbole aside, it’s also totally worth it. To save about twenty bucks off of the regular $55, I generally order it off of Amazon for free shipping with our Prime membership. Unfortunately, it’s been on backorder for a while now with no foreseeable estimated date. I’ve been into the local Ulta twice to buy it full retail because I can’t handle my pores anymore, and both times I’ve come up with big empty holes in the shelves where it is supposed to be. So what is this magical potion I’m raving about?

Stock Photo time because as we’ve established above, I am tapped out… behold the glory of Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Thermafoliant!

I have a pretty lazy skin care routine– I pretty much do all of it in a daily shower with some Neutrogena pore refining solution here and there. I almost always sleep in makeup, but if I’m feeling icky and sweaty or have a ton of makeup on that I feel is clogging my face, I’ll hit it with the cotton scrub pads and the wonderfully tingly astringent mentioned above. However, after a lot of product hopping, I finally found some kind of magic combination of wash and scrub that makes my laziness okay because my skin is almost always perfectly clear and soft and I have no fine lines. I wash with Purity by Philosophy, then use the miracle scrub at least every other day.

I was introduced to Dermalogica products after a professional facial prior to my cousin’s wedding. I left with quite a few things the esthetician sold me, but the only bit of what I got that I was impressed with was their microfoliant powder. I will say, that made my skin awesome too and it was such a gentle but powerful scrub. However, it was a powder and it clumped in the container a lot with bathroom humidity and I went through it a lot faster. On one of my reorders, I saw reviews raving about the thermofoliant on Amazon so I gave it a try instead since it’s more shower friendly.

If you want to know all the scientific benefits and ingredients, I’ll let you look that up yourself, but basically it’s a yellow-gold ambrosia scrub that heats when it comes in contact with water. There’s some reaction that takes place so you’re not only getting the exfoliation from the fine and gentle grit, but also from the chemical awesome that is taking place. It sounds harsh, but it’s a little bit like getting a chemical and sandblast treatment at once… but in a good way, because the box says something about multivitamins. That means healthy! And it doesn’t hurt, but protip, if your face feels a little sensitive, skip a day.

So yeah. If they discontinue it, they might want to fireproof their buildings because while I’m not prone to arson, desperate times and measures, man.

In other news, Emma gets pretty damn happy about plastic hamburgers. SQUEAKSQUEAKSQUEEEEAK

There is a big debate out there whether you should be taking natural or synthetic vitamins. Previous

There is a big debate out there whether you should be taking natural or synthetic vitamins. Previously, I had written a blog post trying to convince people to avoid synthetic vitamins, but I’ve changed my position on this issue. While food-based vitamins sound like a really good idea, many people have problems with food-based vitamins. There can be ingredients in them that cause some people problems. I personally am taking synthetic vitamins at this time and don’t see a good enough reason to spend the extra money for food-based supplements.

Synthetic Vitamins

In my first blog post about vitamins, I stated that synthetic vitamins should be avoided because they tax your immune system and are not well absorbed. In my research over the last year, I have found this to not be entirely the case. I am currently on a Nutritional Balancing program that uses synthetic vitamins and have seen my health greatly improve. This program has been used by over one hundred thousand people using synthetic vitamins with fantastic results. My mineral levels have increased and I’ve experienced more vitality and energy – all from synthetics.

I had previously stated that synthetic vitamins are less than fifty percent absorbed. This is not the case with every person or every nutrient. Absorption depends upon many factors. Many synthetic vitamins are poorly absorbed simply because they are bound together with cheap binders that don’t allow a release of the nutrients, not necessarily because the synthetic vitamins are themselves poorly absorbed. One must avoid cheap mass-market synthetics like Centrum, most brands at drug store chains, grocery store chains, and membership club stores (Kirkland brand) because they contain these cheap binders that prevent their absorption. Commonly, vitamins and mineral are in forms that are not absorbable, but this can be circumvented by educating yourself on the forms that are the best absorbed and buying from reputable manufacturers, whom I’ve listed below. People absolutely see their vitamins and mineral levels improve with synthesized vitamins and minerals.

Previously, I stated that synthetic vitamins cause immune system reactions that lower your immunity. Foods and food-based supplements can cause immune system reactions as well. This is not necessarily a reason to not take synthetic supplements and does not seem to harm your immune system in any meaningful way. For these reasons, I am now in favor of using synthetic vitamins and recommend their use.

Synthetic Vs. Food-based Vitamins

Food-based vitamins will not work for everyone. To say that food-based supplements are better than synthetics is a generalization that is untrue. Again, it’s the old adage: everyone is different. You have to find what supplements work for you. I’ve compiled a nice comparison of some of the pros and cons of food-based vitamins in comparison to synthetic vitamins:

1) Most food-based supplements contain synthetic vitamins. Some claim to be all natural, but use yeast or algae or other food as a base and simply add synthetic vitamins to this ‘food’ base. Under current law, a vitamin marketed as natural only has to contain 10 percent natural, plant-derived ingredients – the other ninety percent can be synthetic. An example of a natural base is Acerola cherry or rosehip, to which synthetic vitamin C, ascorbic acid, is added. The food-based vitamins I recommend do not use this loophole and are high quality, but this is something to watch out for. For instance, the Whole Foods Brand is not a true food-based vitamin and uses algae as their base with synthetic vitamins added to the product. This is the norm rather than the exception with food-based vitamins.

2) Food-based vitamins can also be isolated. While some food-based supplements are pure whole foods, many are isolates extracted from their whole food base. For example, a food-based chromium made from yeast is still an extract or isolate. This same chromium can be put into a synthetic or a food-based supplement. Even a food-based vitamin C is extracted or isolated from a plant such as the Acerola cherry. In some cases, the entire food is dehydrated and put into a capsule, but this is not always the case. The word isolate can apply to both food-based and synthesized products.

3) Food-based vitamins cost more. Food-based vitamins are almost always more costly than synthetics, even two to three times as expensive. This is understandable, as it is much more costly to manufacture food-based supplements. Vegetables and other foods must be harvested, dried, measured, tested and powdered into capsules. Food-based supplements also can be far more costly because more pills are needed to achieve the same dose. For instance, a natural vitamin C I used to take only contained 120mg of vitamin C, causing me to have to take 4 capsules to get 500mg of vitamin C. The bottle of 90 capsules cost $20. The same bottle of synthetic vitamin C costs far, far less.

4) Dosages are too low in food-based products. Today, most people are toxic and nutrient depleted. They need larger amounts of nutrients than can be obtained with the low doses found in food-based supplements. More food-based supplements are needed to obtain the same dosage as a synthetic in most cases. Food-based supplements are less convenient due to the larger number of tablets or capsules required. Even though a bottle contains 90 tablets, you will likely need to take 4-8 or more per day of a food-based multivitamin to get the same dosage you need with a synthetic vitamin in 2-4 tablets a day. This means that many more tablets must be given, rendering supplementation inconvenient. Most cannot remember to or are not willing to take more than 4+ pills a day in divided doses to satisfy their nutrient needs.

5) Sensitivities to foods or fillers in food-based products. Some companies put oat flour, potato starch other fillers in their tablets. The problem is that many people are sensitive to all gluten-containing foods. Others are sensitive to nightshades. Food-based products can contain all kinds of different foods to which many could have allergies or sensitivities. As a result, food-based products can cause mild to severe reactions, while the so-called isolated, synthetic nutrient products would not cause such a problem and work far better for sensitive people. People vary in their tolerance to all supplements, as well as to foods.

6) Inexact dosages. Food-based products pose problems with obtaining the exact amount desired nutrients, coupled with the difficult in controlling undesirable nutrients in the products. When combined in a food or even an herbal product, one is getting the desired nutrient, but also getting extra nutrients that often counteract or antagonize the desired nutrient. Important nutrients may be omitted or others included because that is the only way to obtain the correct amount of the desired nutrient. For example, suppose we wish to take 25 mg of zinc to a person. In a food-based product, the zinc will be combined in a food or herbal form that most likely contains a little copper, manganese, selenium, chromium and other minerals. However, the other minerals directly compete with zinc for absorption. So, no matter what the label says, you will not be getting the same amount of zinc as you would if there were no antagonistic or competing nutrients present. Additionally, food-based vitamin companies may add herbs to their products without realizing that the minerals in the herbs can and do also compete with the desired advertised mineral in the product. This can also reduce the effective dose of the desired mineral.

7) Food-based vitamins are not always better absorbed. This is not the case with every person or every nutrient. Absorption depends upon many factors. While true at times, the body is very capable of absorbing a synthesized or isolated nutrient such as vitamin B or vitamin C, even if no other food components or cofactors are provided. The absorption issue is a stance many food-based supplements take as a reason to use their products, but this issue is really blown far out of proportion. Synthetics are absorbed quite well when taken with a meal. Many synthetic vitamins are poorly absorbed simply because they are bound together with cheap binders that don’t allow a release of the nutrients, not necessarily because the synthetic vitamins are themselves poorly absorbed.

8) You don’t need cofactors to absorb or utilize nutrients. Food-based vitamin companies market their products as superior because they contain synergistic factors, which aid in absorbing a nutrient. In most cases, this is simply not true. Synergistic factors or cofactors are not always needed in supplements. In other words, if you want to take zinc, you don’t need copper, manganese or some vitamins to absorb the zinc. In fact, this often makes the product less effective and perhaps inappropriate. Vitamin C is another common example. Food-based supplement companies claim when we take vitamin C it must be taken with 10% bioflavonoids to be effective. However, we don’t need or even want bioflavonoids with it. That just happens to be how nature packages vitamin C in some, but not all, foods.

9) Isolated nutrients are not toxic. Some books and websites claim that synthetic vitamins can be slightly toxic to the body. But isolated nutrients are usually no more toxic than food-based products. All food supplements are toxic to a tiny degree. So are all foods, for that matter. In fact, isolated nutrients are less toxic than many food products, a fact that the food-based manufacturers often overlook.

For more on this topic, read a fantastic article by Dr. Lawrence Wilson entitled Food-Based Supplements on his site drlwilson.com.

Best Synthetic Multivitamins

Not everyone responds well to natural, food-based vitamins for the reasons I mentioned. You have to experiment and see what works for your individual biochemistry. These vitamins are not food-based or natural, but very high quality:

Thorne

Metagenics Phytomulti

Endomet Megapan. This is the one I take.

Endomet Endopan. Note: The Endomet products are recommended based upon a Hair Mineral Analysis.

I recommend buying all vitamins from a fantastic site called Pureformulas.com. They only carry the highest quality, top-of-the-line vitamins. No matter what you buy, you can rest assured that you are getting the highest quality supplements.

Best Natural Multivitamins

If you want natural vitamins, I’ve compiled a list of brands I like, though it is my no means comprehensive. For a list of names of synthetic and food-based ingredients on labels that will help you discern if the brand you are using is truly natural or a phony food-based vitamin, see my blog post 90% of Vitamins are Synthetic. Some of the best natural food-based brands are:

Supplements to Avoid

The following supplements are generally okay for a month or two. Generally, I think you should avoid any food or supplement that contain too many toxic metals. We are so toxic already. Why pay for a supplement that adds toxic metals to your body? This is a list compiled by drlwilson.com. He suggests avoiding all prolonged use of:

Fulvic and humic acid products. These will give symptomatic results, but they contain a ton of toxic metals.

All chelation products. Extracts of cilantro, chlorella, bugleweed, yellow dock, EDTA, DMPS, DMSA and other chelators should be avoided. While they do chelate toxic metals out of your body, they also chelate minerals out of the body. Taken for too long, it can be difficult to replace the vital minerals lost using these products.

Clay supplements such as bentonite, zeolite, montomorillonite, azomite, etc. While they do contain minerals, they contain a ton of toxic metals. Additionally, they can remove vital minerals like any chelator.

Most protein powders. These tend to be nutritionally incomplete because they are usually protein isolates. This means the protein is isolated from the other cofactors – nutrients and vitamins needed to process them. Read your product label. It likely contains soy protein isolate, whey protein isolate, etc. When you eat an isolated protein powder, it robs your body of the co-factors or vitamins needed to process it! Whole foods and real protein eaten as actual foods are so much better for you and contain additional nutrition that could never be replicated by a powder. I say use a whole food protein powder once or twice a week, but eat real protein foods the rest of the time.

Cleansing and intestinal cleansing drinks, powders, and supplements. Cleansing powders should only be used, if at all, for very short periods of time. Many can be very harsh. Some intestinal cleansers stimulate peristalsis and trigger emptying of the bowels. While this is fine occasionally, they can cause dependency if used regularly. Many go on a few week cleanse thinking they are doing their body a lot of good, but in reality it takes many years to rid the body of heavy metals and chemicals.

Why You Need to Supplement

I cannot stress enough why you need to take vitamin and mineral supplements. Our modern food supply is severely deficient in nutrients, mainly minerals. In fact, a head of broccoli grown today has 20% of the mineral content that it contained in the 1920’s. The reasons you need to supplement are due to many factors:

1) You are born nutrient depleted and toxic. No matter how healthy our lifestyle, we are born with the nutritional deficiencies and heavy metal and chemical toxicity of our mothers. These toxins are easily passed from mother to child in the womb.

2) Soil is depleted. Many soils are low in zinc, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, calcium and magnesium. No matter what diet you eat, you cannot obtain all the nutrients you need from food.

3) High-yield crops are deficient in certain nutrients. Soils, even at organic farms, become depleted of vitamins and minerals after years of cultivation. For example, ten times the amount of wheat is grown on the same land as was grown 100 years ago. Today’s wheat contains about 6% protein whereas 100 years ago it contained 12-14%. Trace mineral levels are similarly much lower due to high-yield farming methods.

4) Modern fertilizers do not supply enough trace minerals. One hundred years ago, manure was used for fertilizer. Today, chemicals fertilizers are used but contain mainly nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, but are deficient in the trace elements found in manure. This has contributed greatly to depletion of the soil and crop minerals. Organically grown food is generally more nutrient-rich because it is grown on better quality soil with proper farming methods and fertilization, but this is not always the case. Almost invariably, all the produce grown at every farmer’s market in Los Angeles is grown using chemical fertilizers. I know – I’ve asked every vendor.

5) Pesticides deplete soils. Pesticides kill soil microorganisms that are needed to make minerals and other nutrients available to plants. The result is lower nutrient content. Many pesticides are deadly chemicals that severely tax the human system. Many contain lead, arsenic and other toxic metals that slowly accumulate in the body unless one detoxifies from them. Our laws currently allow sewage and factory sludge to be sold as fertilizer that contain significant amounts of toxic metals. These add greatly to our toxic metal burden and require extra nutrients to help remove them from the body. Additionally, many pesticides work by chelating minerals out of weeds to kill them. They die of malnutrition. The same effect is at work inside your body when you eat pesticide residues.

6) Long-distance transportation. Due to the time it takes fresh foods to get from the farm to your table, 57% or more of the nutritional value can be lost. Many foods are grown thousands of miles from where they are purchased. Some are grown on the other side of the planet! On average, they spend a week in transit to reach you. Because of this, produce is picked before it is fully ripe, preventing maximum nutrient potential. The minute food is picked nutrient levels begin to diminish. Grow your own garden and eat veggies while they’re still alive!

7) Food processing reduces nutrient content. Refining of wheat to make white flour removes 80% of its magnesium, 70-80% of its zinc, 87% of its chromium, 88% of its manganese and 50% of its cobalt. Refining sugar cane to make white sugar removes 99% of its magnesium and 93% of its chromium. Polishing rice removes 75% of its zinc and chromium. Even foods that are in whole grain form still suffer from nutrient deficiency if they are ground into flour, processed, boxed, shipped, and stored for any significant period of time. Frozen foods are nutritionally better but not as good as fresh vegetables. It’s always best to eat foods as close to their original, minimally processed form as possible. For instance, eat a fresh strawberry, not a dried one.

8) Food additives can further deplete nutrients. Thousands of artificial flavors, colors, flavor enhancers, dough conditioners, and preservatives are added to foods. While some are harmless, many are toxic and deplete the body of nutrients. For example, EDTA added to some frozen vegetables to preserve the color of the vegetable does so by removing minerals from the vegetable so it does not “tarnish.”

9) Weakened digestion. One result of eating refined, low-quality food with hundreds of food additives is that most people’s digestion is impaired. This further impairs nutrient absorption and increases nutritional needs. It’s a vicious cycle that continues as long as one eats a poor quality diet. Additionally, eating a lot of sugar and wheat flour depletes your body of vitamin and minerals. It takes 56 molecules of magnesium to process one molecule of sugar.

10) Stressful lifestyles deplete many nutrients including calcium, magnesium and zinc. Zinc begins to be eliminated from the body within minutes of a stressful situation. Stress causes excessive sympathetic nervous system activity, which reduces digestive strength. This, in turn, reduces nutrient absorption even further. Thus, anyone under stress will need even more nutrients than someone that lives a very peaceful existence.

You can take synthetic vitamins or food-based vitamins to fill in the blanks of your nutritional needs. But by all means, take something! My goal with Live to 110 is to illustrate how to live a healthy life within the context of our modern toxic environment and navigate all the health myths fed to us my manufacturers and the pharmaceutical companies. Taking supplements is definitely part of the program.

Do you have an opinion about synthetic versus food-based and natural vitamins? Have I left anything out of this article? Have you had problems with either of these types of vitamins? I want to know! Tell me your story by leaving a comment below.

People are getting intense in training in whatever sport they get into. They developed Enervon Aktiv for active people who are serious about their sport. I chanced up with Enervon Aktiv brand manager Ms. Bianca Cortez during the Run Rio Awards night, and we discussed more on the product. ”Over time, we are getting great results and positive feedback on Enervon Aktiv from athletes and serious runners, cyclists and triathletes” she said.
An increasingly number of the world’s population is now eager and interested in looking after their

An increasingly number of the world’s population is now eager and interested in looking after their health and in keeping tune with their well-being. It is important to note that this awareness is progressively contributing to the creation of several health supplements to benefit both the adults and the young ones. Dietary and vitamin supplements have constantly proven their worth to health conscious individuals.

An excellent daily multivitamin supplement does not only develop your general bodily functions but also improves your mental and physical condition and well being. Occasionally specification is needed in appropriately supplementing nutrients to deal with any individual needs. An example would be in heart disease patients, they would have to take in CoQ10 in preventing the said condition. Alzheimer’s disease can be effectively prevented by a regular combination of Vitamin C and E intake.

Multivitamin supplements necessarily include all the vitamins and nutrients essential for recommended daily dosage. Multivitamin supplements may also be formulated to meet the needs of individual conditions like pregnancy and specific age brackets. It is a well settled fact that multivitamins in liquid form are more efficient than the ordinary pill forms. This is due to the fact that the body can easily absorb liquid nutrients five times more than ordinary multivitamins in tablet or capsule form.

Basically, the body needs 13 essential vitamins to function properly. In regulating the crucial performance of the body, it has to have vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K, B12, and the 7 B-complex vitamins. Majority of these vitamins are obtained by our body through the food that we eat. The danger of illness or even mortality is in the deficiency of some of the essential vitamins. This is where vitamin supplementation comes in. It counteracts the illness caused by such deficiency. With this fact, it is very unlikely for someone to refuse vitamin supplementation on a daily basis. So the question now is, why is it necessary for individuals to take multivitamins when majority of our daily diet can provide us with the basic nutrients we need? It may not be compulsory, but everyone can profit from daily multivitamins.

As previously mentioned, the clear benefit of daily intake of multivitamins it to prevent vitamin/nutrient deficiency. Some personal circumstances may increase dietary needs. Pregnant women, during their first trimester, are recommended by their doctors to take multivitamins. This does not only provide the mothers with sufficient nutrition but also proper vitamins to benefit the unborn child inside their womb. Taking multivitamins everyday reduces the risk of transmitting malnutrition from a pregnant woman to her unborn baby. Other conditions such as old age, alcoholism, smoking, and exposure to excessive pollution have long-term detrimental effects to the body system which can be successfully counteracted by multivitamins.

Stress is also one risk factor which needs serious supplementation that multivitamins can provide. Especially with people who have so much to do and have a hard time in keeping up with their health needs, multivitamins are a must to keep them always on the go without any health complications in the long run. Stress formulations benefit both your mental ability and daily endurance. Aside from the mentioned benefits, daily multivitamins also minimize the risk of cancer or any cardiovascular disease.

Several people, if not all, testify to have a feeling of comfortable health in regularly taking in multivitamins. This is due to the synergistic or combined effects of the supplemental ingredients found in multivitamins. A fat-soluble antioxidant vitamin, like the Vitamin E, works to neutralize probable harmful free agents in the body. This vitamin also maintains healthy skin through protection of cell membranes, blood circulation, heart, nerves, red blood cells, and muscles. Another antioxidant is the Vitamin C which effectively fights blood cell infection and is vital in collagen formation, wound healing, and formation of bone structures, capillaries, and teeth. Vitamin is also helpful in the iron absorption from plant sources. Vitamins A, D, K and other supplemental nutrients found in multivitamins have specific functions that benefit the bodily functions.

While daily intake of multivitamins may have proven beneficial, it is not a 100% guarantee to be free of serious illness attributed to other factors. It is often a misconception that symptoms of disease may always be cured by taking multivitamins. Health experts have the better opinion of immediate medical assistance rather than resorting to multivitamins alone.
