Legtöbbször hosszú hajúak, és fogazatuk leginkább a vámpírokat jutatthatja eszünkbe. Hivatalason csak múmiákról tudnak, de valószínűsíthető, hogy Indonézia erdei rejtenek élő példányokat is.
Nagy ritkaság egy ilyen múmia, ezért nagyon értékes is. Az őslakosok természetfeletti erőt tulajdonítanak nekik. Állítólag vannak olyan vadászok, akik konkrétan rájuk specializálták magukat.
Persze, hogy mennyi a körítés, babona kontra mennyi a valóság ebből azt nem tudom. Próbáltam a neten utána nézni a témának, elég sovány eredménnyel. Az írások általában leállnak a babonák és hiedelmek taglalásánál.

Despite several ignorant comments posted in response to my last blog post, attending an event where thousands of conscious, aware people converged for an important cause was a wonderful reminder of why I continue to vehemently fight against bigotry. I find that getting feedback from ignorant people inspires me just as much as attending events like this, because every  meathead comment like “Uh, I like Thanksgiving and football and could care less about genocide.” makes me want to yell in the streets until my voice breaks–and we need voices in the streets now more than ever. As you will see from this video, there was no shortage of conscious people converging at Plymouth Rock yesterday. The below video is a compilation intended for those with short attention spans. “Maka pada hari ini kami selamatkan badanmu supaya kamu dapat menjadi pelajaran bagi orang-orang yang datang sesudahmu dan sesungguhnya kebanyakan dari manusia lengah dari tanda-tanda kekuasaan Kami”.

 Salah satu daripada mukjizat balaghah di dalam Al quran, adalah kebiasaannya perbezaan pendapat di kalangan mufassirun (ulama’ tafsir) tentang makna sesuatu perkataan di dalam al Quran merupakan suatu perbezaan yang membawa maksud yang pelbagai, bukannya perbezaan yang berlawanan maksudnya di antara satu sama lain (خلاف تنوع لا خلاف تضاد).

 Jika seseorang itu meneliti pendapat para mufassirun tersebut, maka dia akan mendapati bahawa kebanyakkan perkataan di dalam al Quran mempunyai makna yang banyak, atau dalam erti kata yang lain, satu perkataan mengandungi pelbagai maksud. Bahkan makna yang pelbagai tersebut saling berkaitan serta melengkapi di antara satu dengan yang lain. Ianya sekaligus membuktikan keindahan bahasa al Quran yang merupakan kalam Allah yang ringkas dan pendek tetapi membawa maksud yang banyak dan mendalam jika kita mentadabburinya.

 Salah satu contohnya ialah seperti ayat di atas. Ulama’ Tafsir menafsirkan perkataan ننجيك seperti berikut:-

1-   Lafaz tersebut membawa maksud النجاء iaitu mempercepatkan, yakni pada hari ini kami mempecepatkan kemusnahan kamu.

2-   Dan dikatakan juga: Ianya bermakna kami jadikan kamu seperti النجاء iaitu sesuatu yang disingkirkan dan dibuang seperti sampah, yakni pada hari ini kami menyingkirkan dan membuang kamu seperti sampah sarap.

3-   Pendapat yang lain pula: Ia berasal daripada perkataan النجو iaitu tenggelam, yakni pada hari ini kami menenggelamkan kamu di dalam laut.

4-     Maksudnya adalah menyelamatkan, yakni pada hari ini kami keluarkan kamu dari laut dengan selamat tanpa sedikit pun kecederaan pada badanmu.

5-   Ianya membawa maksud النجاة iaitu melepas ia akan dia, yakni pada hari ini kami melepaskan rohmu daripada badanmu.

6-   Ianya memberi makna النجا iaitu berhadas (buang air), yakni pada hari ini kami jadikan kamu sampai terbuang air tanpa disedari; ia sebagai menambahkan lagi penghinaan ke atas Firaun.

7-     Dan ada yang mengatakan bahawa maknanya: dan pada hari ini kami keluarkan kamu dari laut dengan bertelanjang bulat.

8-     Dikatakan juga mengatakan maksud ayat tersebut adalah: dan pada hari ini kami keluarkan kamu dari takhta kamu keseorangan diri.

9-   Dan akhir sekali maknanya نجوة من الأرض  suatu tempat yang tinggi, yakni: dan pada hari ini kami melemparkan kamu ke suatu tempat yang tinggi.

 Kesimpulannya, jika kita gabungkan kesemua pendapat di atas, maka kita akan dapati bahawa ianya seolah-olah menghasilkan sebuah cerita yang lengkap bagaimana bermulanya peristiwa Firaun ditenggelamkan oleh Allah swt di dalam laut sehingga ke akhirnya serta apa yang sedang berlaku semasa Firaun sedang tenggelam. 

 Kisahnya boleh dianggap lebih kurang seperti berikut wallahu ‘alam: maka pada hari ini, Kami mempercepatkan kemusnahanmu (Fir’aun), maka Kami mencampakkan kamu ke dalam laut seperti sampah yang tidak berguna, lalu Kami membiarkan kamu tenggelam dan kelemasan di dalamnya, sehinggakan kamu berhadas (terberak-berak dan terkencing-kencing) tanpa kamu sedari kerana terlalu cemas, kemudian kami keluarkan jasadmu tanpa roh (mayat) dari laut dengan selamat tanpa sedikit pun kecederaan atau dimakan oleh haiwan laut dalam keadaan bertelanjang bulat keseorangan diri sahaja serta telah kehilangan segala takhta kerajaan dan kekuasaan kamu, dan akhirnya kami lemparkan kamu kamu ke suatu tempat yang tinggi agar dapat dijumpai dan dilihat oleh kaummu yang sebelumnya meragui akan kematian kamu.

 Begitulah terserlahnya keagungan dan keindahan bahasa al Quran (I’jaz Balaghi) yang mengungkapkan satu perkataan sahaja tetapi mengandungi pelbagai maksud untuk menceritakan sebuah kisah yang panjang.

 Di sana terdapat satu lagi perkara yang menarik perhatian kita iaitu, kenapakah Allah swt mengatakan فاليوم ننجيك (maka pada hari ini kami sealamatkan kamu) sedangkan menurut kaedah nahu yang lebih tepat (didahulukan ‘amil sebelum ma’mulnya) adalah فننجيك اليوم (maka kami selamatkan kamu pada hari ini)? Jawabnya wallahu ‘alam; maksud Allah menyelamatkan Fir’aun hanyalah terhad pada dunia ini sahaja agar ummatnya dan ummat di kemudian hari dapat mengambil tauladan dan pengajaran yakni Kami tidak selamatkan kamu kecuali pada hari ini sahaja (di dunia).

 Di dalam ayat ini juga terdapat satu lagi mukjizat al Quran, Nabi Muhammad saw telah memberitahu kita sebelum 1400 tahun dahulu bahawa Allah swt telah menyelamatkan jasad Fir’aun yang mengejar Nabi Musa as dan Bani Israel. Dan sekarang kita semua masih dapat melihat jasad tersebut yang masih utuh tersimpan di sebuah muzium di Mesir. Jasad tersebut telah dilakukan satu bedah siasat oleh sekumpulan pakar perubatan dan forensik di antaranya Prof. Dr. Maurice Bucaille. Bedah siasat yang dilakukan di Perancis itu mendapati bahawa itulah jasad Fir’aun yang telah ditenggelami air yang kemudiannya telah diselamatkan oleh Allah Ta’ala seperti yang dinyatakan di dalam al Quran.

 Oleh yang demikian, segalanya membuktikan bahawa kitab al Quran benar-benar merupakan Kalam Allah swt yang telah diwahyukan kepada Nabi Muhammad saw. Justeru menjelaskan kepada kita yang al Quran memang sebuah kitab suci dan wahyu Allah yang tulin dan masih terpelihara segala isi kandungannya, serta Nabi Muhammad saw sememangnya merupakan seorang nabi dan rasul yang diutuskan oleh Allah swt buat ummat manusia akhir zaman ini.

Wir warten zwar immer noch auf den Beginn der
online-Unterschriftensammlung unter die von Mumia und seiner
Verteidigung entworfenen Petition, die sich an US-Präsident Barack Obama
richtet, es kann aber nicht schaden, Eric Holder in den nächsten 5 Tagen
noch zu einer »Civil Rights Investigation« aufzufordern.
In einem Rundschreiben des »New Yorker Bündnisses zur Befreiung von
Mumia Abu-Jamal« wird angekündigt, dass eine Delegation am 12. November
die ausgedruckten Unterschriften unter die Petition an US-Justizminister
Eric Holder übergeben wird. (Leider ist die bisherige Zahl der
Unterschriften nicht bekannt, und die Zahl ist auch auf der Website
nicht zu erkennen.)
Gefordert wird ein Untersuchungsausschuss über den Rassismus in der
US-Justiz am Beispiel von Mumias Verfahren. Die Petition selbst wurde
mit  starker Unterstützung (u.a. vom N.A.A.C.P) bereits im Juli 2009 im
Weißen Haus abgegeben.

The King vs. The King of the Dead

Jakby tego było mało, ich dom starców zaczyna nawiedzać duszożerna mumia przebierająca się za kowboja. Wow.

Przez cały film oglądamy Elvisa zastanawiającego się nad swoim życiem. Widzimy go leżącego w łóżku myślącego o pryszczu na swoim penisie, czy też o tym że nie było mu dane być dobrym ojcem dla swojej córki. Elvis żyje i nie jest to żaden równoległy wszechświat, tylko normalne obecne czasy. Wszystko jest wytłumaczone. Nawet to, że jego kolega z domu starców ‘Jack’ Kennedy jest czarny.

Wszystko zapowiadało się pięknie. Narracja Bruce’a Campbella, historia Elvisa, walka ze skarabeuszem czy rozprawienie się z Królem Umarłych – to wszystko było śliczne. Zresztą nazwisko Bruce Campbell i taki opis fabuły wystarczyły by film zdobył status kultowego. Niestety film jako całość jest średni. Nie jest ani troszeczkę straszny, a śmieszny tylko momentami (choć są to momenty niezłe). Jest natomiast troszeczkę nudny. It just lacks some serious kick-ass action.

Wg naszego systemu oceniania film pasuje do noty przeciętnego. Jest zabawny i sympatyczny, ale średni. Jeśli zaś ktoś lubi konwencję komediowego horroru, to niech to obejrzy a nie marnuje czasu przy tragicznym Megan’s Body, a dla fanów Bruce’a Campbella to i tak must-see.

ps. nasz internetowy tłumacz nazwał ten film nieoficjalnie ‘Mietek Mumia’. Piękne.

Following my lead (as they often do), The New York Times today weighed on on the issue of evaluating the true cost of an extreme public policy. In this case, it was the death penalty – one of our classic, no-common-ground, political footballs.

Now, I don’t believe in the death penalty. That doesn’t mean that I don’t believe society has the right to take a life for the greater good. It certainly does, and we re-affrm that right when we arm our cops and our military. If they believe a life is in immediate danger or a serious crime is in progress, they must act with force and sometimes with lethal force. We give permission, as a society, to take a life. I just don’t think, in most capital cases, that we should. The deterrence factor of lethal force works best in urgent and immediate situations (“Stop or I’ll shoot” makes them either stop or run faster; actually shooting has the same effect). But once we have established control of a threat (and there is no greater control than a maximum security prison), it demeans us as a society to take a life and I don’t think it is worth the baggage, much less the cost in hard tax dollars. On the other hand, I have about three million things on my to-do list before you’ll find me standing outside a prison in a candlelight vigil for a murderer. Sorry, Mumia, but you have enough misguided people in your corner. My candle will be lit for your victims.

Maybe as long as we have the death penalty we should use it, but with the greatest possible restraint. After all, we budget state spending limits for libraries, for unemployment compensation, for election funding – why not for the most expensive (per capita) element of our criminal justice system? If termination is that expensive, maybe each state should have a “term” limit. Then there would be some competition for the most deserving recipient of the needle, instead of the current ‘pass/fail’ test that involves the quality of your lawyer, your bank account, and yes, your race and the race of your victim. I watched 60 Minutes this week so I would start with Bernie Madoff. We’ll happily execute an armed robber who grabs a handful of cash and kills a store clerk and plunges ONE person’s family, friends, and community into grief. Madoff stole billions and ruined thousands of lives. He should go to the head of the line. He’s used to stepping over others to reach the top.

Maybe the death penalty truly can be a deterrent, but I don’t believe it deters people who have dedicated their lives to violence. Let’s use it where it will do some good. Scare all those prospective felons in white collars. Seize their assets while they are alive and let them watch their families turned out into the streets. Let Bernie’s victims vote for execution on an American Idol basis. I’m sure he made enough friends vs. enemies in his lifetime to win that vote, right? Better yet, tell him that he won and his life will be spared, then tell him that it appears that there was some fraudulent activity in the accounting, the votes he was counting on aren’t there, and he’ll have to die anyway. Let’s start reserving the scarce use of the death penalty for the criminals who have hurt the most people. What kind of message does 150 years in prison send to a 70-year old schemer? But thinking about having only 150 days to live may give the next Bernie Madoff or Ken Lay pause before they choose to take the money and do the harm. (Of course we can’t dig up Ken Lay and execute him, but we should at least take posession of the gravesite for a public restroom. It could become a vacation destination for Enron victims.)

Since most white-collar criminals are pigment-challenged as well as ethics-challenged, we’ll call our preferential program “Affirmative Action for the Greedy White Guy” A nice way to play catch-up for the racial disparity in our current executions.

We need some kind of reform because that pesky Eighth Amendment keeps the death penalty from being any fun. For example, I think that someone who terrorizes society by poisoning Tylenol or sending anthrax through the mail should spend anywhere from one to three years in suspense while they are forced to eat every meal, never knowing if it will be their last (“Hey Jack, did your mashed potatoes taste a little ‘off’ today?”). DC Sniper? Easy justice. (“Enjoy your time in the exercise yard. Stay low. Today might be the day”). Each warden could be creative, but you get the idea.

OK, none of that will happen, but if the Times has a valid point, then we need to have a less expensive and more satisfying way to permanently shelve our worst citizens. Here’s my suggestion: Virtual Death Penalty. A sentence of exile that includes absolute isolation and complete removal from society, with all the finality of the death penalty except for the actual cessation of breathing. No outside contact. No reason for further appeals to escape the death penalty. The exiled will have the same chance to interact with others, speak to friends, see family, hear good news, or share their dreams that their victims have – zero. Their families can visit a grave with a name on it, but no one will never know when a vicious killer actually passes, because he was as good as dead when he went into exile. If DNA or other evidence proves innocence, a judge can still open sealed records, locate someone, and set them free (something we can’t do with the actual death penalty). Perhaps have the Red Cross or Amnesty International monitor inmates by number only. Assisted suicide on request might be an option. Then put a new law on the books. Anyone who assists someone in Virtual Death by passing a message or breaching the rules in any way gets to join them. I’m guessing that society can get the satisfaction that is (falsely) promised by executions and the safety promised by life without parole, for a lot less money.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m all in favor of justice but I don’t think having a death penalty delivers on that promise cost-effectively, Maybe a Virtual Death Penalty will be cheaper. Plus, our hands will be cleaner and our souls will be lighter.

C’est par cette citation que j’avais envie de commencé cet article sur Wesley Scott, plus connu sous le nom de Mumia Abu Jamal. Mais qui est il ? C’est un journaliste américain. Mais pourquoi je parle de prisonnier politique et des états-unis ? Voyons un peu son histoire.

En 1968, Mumia, un jeune noir de 14 ans vivant à Philadelphie, est arrêté et battu par la police pour avoir protesté contre un meeting du candidat pro-ségrégationniste à l’élection présidentielle, l’ancien gouverneur de l’Alabama, George Wallace. Voila sa première confrontation avec les forces de l’ordre et c’est de la que lui est venu sa vocation d’activiste militant. Peu de temps après ces évènements, il est fiché par le FBI pour avoir voulu renommé son lycée en “Malcom X”.

En 1969, il rejoint le Black Panther Party ou il a en charge l’information dans la section de Philadelphie. Pour le FBI, il est passé de “simple étudiant à surveillé” à “surveiller et interner en cas d’alerte nationale” et il devient une des cibles du cointelpro, un programme de contre-espionnage du FBI sous la direction de John Edgar Hoover qui enquête et perturbe les organisations politiques dissidentes aux États-Unis.

La voix des sans-voix

Il est devenu un journaliste radio apprécié, lauréat de plusieurs prix, Mumia est surnommé “la voix des sans-voix” pour sa critique de la corruption de la police et des dirigeants politiques locaux. Il devient un défenseur du MOVE. Son soutient à se parti radical et à John Africa, le fondateur énerve plus d’un politicien qui le font renvoyer de la radio WHYY. Pour pouvoir faire vivre sa famille, il devient chauffeur de taxi de nuit.

Le meurtre dont l’accuse les Etats-Unis

Malgré ses dénégations, malgré son absence d’antécédents judiciaires, une enquête inéquitable (expertises balistiques inexistantes, balles non identifiables, absence de relevé d’empreintes, zone des faits non sécurisée, tests non effectués, etc.) conclut à la culpabilité de Mumia. Témoins menacés, subornés, écartés, rapports de police contradictoires, violations de ses droits, mèneront, en juillet 1982, à la condamnation à mort de cet opposant politique gênant sous la pression d’un juge recordman de la sentence, le Juge Sabo … Mumia est “le coupable idéal” …

More than 150 demonstrators marched from 14th Street and Broadway to the Oakland Federal Building to demand that the Justice Department re-open its corruption investigation of the Philadelphia Police Department.

Supporters of Mumia Abu-Jamal, a death row inmate convicted for the 1981 shooting death of a Philadelphia police officer, said the protest was called after the Supreme Court on Monday rejected claims that Abu-Jamal, a former radio journalist and Black Panther, did not receive a fair trial.

“We knew there was another event going on, but the timing of the court decision is what dictated when the protest was held,” said Van Jones, a San Francisco civil rights lawyer who helped coordinate the protest march.

Jones said about 15 protesters occupied the rotunda at the Federal Building on Clay Street in an act of civil disobedience with the hope they would be arrested.
