2009 was a year that saw so many musical areas blossoming like never before, after years of retrenchment. This year, the metal was metal-y-er, the pop was poppier, the noise-duos were noise-duo-y-er, and the shoegaze/mope-goth was more shoegaze/mope-goth-y. “See yourself/your image in the eyes of someone else” goes the pre-chorus of The Horrors’ “Scarlet Fields”. I’m guessing that the band took their own advice, as their new long-player Primary Colours found them remaking themselves from 3rd-tier splatter-garage into an actual second coming of MBV. As we all spent 2009 attempting to sort out the real from the imaginary and idealized in our culture’s looking glass, our music continued to replicate the sound of the shards of the mirror hitting the floor. - Daniel Brockman

Waste 'Em All!

Municipal Waste is one of -if not THE- most important band in the “thrash revival” scene. Back when they first started in the early 2000’s, they were a solid and consistent thrashcore band, but now they seem to have slipped into mediocrity. Their 2 latest release aren’t TERRIBLE, but appear to just be uninspired crossover thrash. While they still manage to put on a damn good show, each and every time I see them I hope to hear their old, fast tunes that just explode with speed and raw fuckin’ energy. The Waste’s first full length, “Waste ‘Em All!“, was just a destructive album. To me, not one filler song. Just energy out the ass all the way through!

Production: 6/10 (sometimes riffs are hard to hear, bass is almost inaudible)

Musicianship: 8/10 (fast as fuck, some genius thrashcore)

Songwriting: 8/10 (while there are no filler songs, some inconsistancies exist)

I onsdags hände absolut ingenting.
Jag var dödstrött och sov hela dagen.

Torsdagen var mer aktiv.
For och åt frukost med Kjell på Transylvania i Hollywood/Western. Efter det blev vi upplockade av Kirsti, Jimmy och Tom.
For till Santa Monica, vandrade runt och snackade mer om dokumentären. Åt lunch på en mexicansk restaurang där det var tusen duvor på terassen,
jag trodde jag skulle dö av hjärtattack. De flög runt och vandrade under bordet på ens fötter. Jag har fortfarande inte riktigt kommit på när det var jag blev rädd för fåglar men det är fan inte roligt.

Efter vår eftermiddag i Santa Monica for vi hemåt.
Kirsti for och såg the Fray med sin syster och jag och Kjell for hem för att duscha och fixa oss före Municipal Waste spelningen.
När vi kom hem och kollade upp när de skulle spela stod det 18:30, vi var hemma runt 19.. Men vi skyndade oss och for dit i alla fall, för jag ville träffa dom.
När vi kom till Key Club så frågade vi om MW redan hade spelat och de sa att de fortfarande var på men skulle sluta just. Så vi skyndade oss in och hann se typ 5 låtar. Bara det var helt fantastiskt. Under sista låten blev Tony nerdragen i publiken och 2 enorma livvakter lyfte upp honom. Efter spelningen blev alla utkastade direkt och jag och Kjell väntade utanför för att träffa Tony.

[ För folk som inte vet. Senast jag träffade Tony var i Helsingfors i September eller nåt liknade, sjukt rolig kväll och fina fylleminnen. Tony är en man med fantastisk humor.

Som han sa i torsdags "You know the picture of you and me, when you're laughing and im doing a funny face? That picture explains it all!"
Vi hade en fin natt.]

Nåväl, efter att ha väntat utan för Key Club i 15 min ungefär kom han ut. Jag for fram för att säga hej och klumpig som jag var gick jag rakt in i nån stor snubbe som gav mig en mördar blick och då kom Tony “Oh my god! What are YOU doing here?!“. Han sa att vi skulle vänta på dom för de hade lite kvar att packa och sen skulle de till en bar. Efter packningen for vi till Rainbow på en öl och eftersom det var så otroligt tråkigt där och alla var höga bestämde Tony, 2 av hans vänner, Kjell och jag att vi skulle fara till en annan bar. Så vi drog till Ventura till en random bar med hillbillys, drack en öl och insåg att det sög så vi for till Ralphs.. köpte öl och vin och for till hotellet men for och satt i deras buss och drack. Efter ett tag for jag och Tony. Sa åt Kjell att han skulle höra av sig till mig ifall nåt hände eller nåt.
Tony berättade att han hade ångest när han lämnade mig förra gången och hade funderat på att skippa flyget (senaste gången) osv. Sen fick han ångest igen eftersom han insåg att det var samma grej den här gången. Dock sa han att han funderar på att komma till Helsingfors i en vecka och hänga med mig efter deras Europa turné i Januari/Februari. Så vi ska se vad som händer. Men han är sjukt rolig att hänga med.
På morgonen var Kjell borta.. inte på bussen, inte hos Tonys kompis och inte på hotellet. och jag kunde inte ringa honom med mitt amerikanska nummer eftersom han har sin finska telefon.. Så jag ringde Kirsti och lämnade ett meddelande.
Sa hejdå till Tony som försökte övertala mig att komma till Anaheim för att se dom.. och sen for jag.

När jag kom hem var tydligen Kjell hemma.
Han sa : “Sheyda, jag tycker du kan bli tillsammans med honom och inte med Andrew”.
Hah, jag tänker inte bli tillsammans med nån av dom.

Igår såg vi Looptroop på Viper Room.
Det var så sjukt konstigt att se dom här i Los Angeles. Blev grymt förvånad att publiken visste vilka dom var.
Det var en fantastik, rätt stor svart kvinna som kunde alla låtar och röjde som fan. Hon gjorde mig glad.
Efter det for jag och Kirsti hem rätt snabbt.

Ikväll tror jag vi ska fara till Whiskey och se Vains of Jenna.

Insåg igår att det är otroligt många fina spelningar här innan jag åker tillbaka.
Imorgon tror jag att vi ska fara och se Slash, Ozzy, Billy Idol, Dave Navarro, Travis Barker and so on.. De spelar på en välgörenhetsgala.
Sen på kommande är ; Danzig, Pennywise, Propagandhi, Slayer, Between the buried and me, Devin Townsend, Calexico, Bullets & Octanes osv.

Nu ska jag och Kirsti fara och sköta ärenden..

Det är kaotiskt.
Dock har det varit fantastiskt att få umgås med Andrew.
Men ja, förra helgen satt vi fast i Jimmys studio och filmade, 10 timmar/dag fredag till söndag..
På söndagen hade jag nästan en breakdown. Det är nåt som irriterar mig något otroligt hos han här Robin Dimaggio men kan inte riktigt komma på vad det är, fastän han har humor så blir jag bara irriterad och tycker han är allt för cheezy. Under småtimmarna på söndagen kom Jimmy och pratade med mig, han insåg nog att jag inte mådde så bra. Han sa många fina saker och peppade mig..

På måndagen behövde vi inte fara till studion.. Så jag tog det lugnt hemma efter allt kaos under helgen.
Runt 19 tiden kom Alex och hämtade mig och vi for till Anaheim för att se Comeback Kid. Mötte en glad Andrew utanför Chain Reaction “Sheeeyda” “Want some vodka?”. Var en riktigt bra spelning förutom att det var sjukt svettigt och jag trodde att jag skulle svettas bort. Sen for jag och Alex hemåt ganska direkt efter spelning. Kom hem sov 1 ½ timme och sen steg jag och Kirsti upp 02:00 eftersom vi hade en photoshoot med artisten September i öknen.
Med all tur vi haft på sistone (sarkasm), fortsatte vår tur med att bilen fått punktering när vi skulle få skjuts till Hollywood. Vi tog den andra bilen som har nåt problem.

Nåväl, vi tog oss till öknen men missade soluppgången, fick massa schyssta bilder och sen runt 12:30 körde vi tillbaka till Hollywood huset.
Där tog vi flera bilder och sen tog vi bilder upp under solnedgången på kullen och till slut var det slut arbetat för dagen runt 18..
Dagen slutade efter 16 timmars arbete med ett stort gräl mellan Kirsti och Ville och jag ville bara fara.. tog en taxi och var hemma runt 19-20 tiden.
Tog en snabb dusch, sen fick jag, Kirsti och Kjell skjuts till Canoga Park av Kirstis mamma för att hinna se Comeback Kid. Mötte upp med Andrew och hans vänner och tog en öl före spelningen. Det hela började redan då… inte så jäkla bekvämt och jag visste inte riktigt hur hans vänner skulle se på det hela.
Efter ölen började spelningen.. Hoppade upp på sidan av scenen och träffade några bekanta ansikten från gårdagen i Anaheim. En kille som helle Dan eller nåt liknande skyddade mig från stora tjocka män som försökte mosha och kom flygandes mot en med fötterna först.
Men det var en fantastik spelning! För att spola fram lite fort så slutade kvällen med att Andrew kom med oss och drack några öl. Han bad om ursäkt för senast i London och berättade att bruden som följde efter honom då tydligen är kär i honom, haha. Jag skrattade och sa att han fick skylla sig själv.
Bakom ett hörn kände jag the Bubble Butt och insåg att den verkligen var som en bubble men på ett bra sätt, vi skrattade ännu mer och frågade varann vad vi skulle göra sen.
Natten spenderades och det var underligt.. jag blev så upprörd över hela situationen så jag låg och spydde. Sen lekte vi thumbwars men dock med en twist.
Jag har fortfarande lite dåligt samvete över vissa grejer men det går över och vi kämpar vidare.

Morgonen var hård.
Runt 12 tiden for jag hem. På metron hem kom det en snubbe vid namn Truce eller nåt liknande och satt sig brevid mig, han såg ut som en cool dude.
Han berättade att han varit i Iran några år sen i 3 månader med sin dåvarade persiska flickvän och att han verkligen gillade stället. Han sa att jag skulle fara till Westwood och till West LA (där han bor) för att det skiljer sig så otroligt med resten av LA. Sen gick vi våra egna vägar, men kanske vi ses igen.
När jag var på metrobytet till Pasadena kom det 2 polismän fram till mig. Trött som jag var insåg jag inte att man inte får dricka på stationen, och jag stod och drack min apelsinsaft. Böter för det är 250 $, tur nog slapp jag det.

Idag har jag bara sovit och vilat mig.
Faith (Kirstis mamma) sa att hon aldrig sett mig så blev som jag var igår då vi kom hem från photoshooten. Kan nog stämma, jag mådde skit.
Kjell är och ser LA Kings (hockey) och Kirsti övernattar hos Johannes.
Imorgon ska vi till Santa Monica med Jimmy och på kvällen ska vi och se Municipal Waste på Key Club.

Nu ska jag äta nåt och sen sooooova ännu mer. Fint!

To Burn Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) - Garbage, Trash or Bury It?

These two waste-to-energy plants dispose of garbage and produce power – efficiently and with low emissions. One plant is brand new, the other just celebrated its 20th anniversary. One’s located in Florida while the other’s in Minnesota. The Lee County (Fla.) Waste-to-Energy Expansion Project is fueled by municipal solid waste, while Great River Energy’s Elk River Station burns refuse-derived fuel (RDF), but both waste-to-energy (WTE) plants do well what they were designed to do: efficiently dispose of garbage.

“Since we’ve completed the project, virtually the only thing going to the landfill is ash.” “The thing about WTE is that it is primarily a method of waste disposal,” said Don Castro, P.E., HDR Engineering, and project manager on the Lee County project. Its main purpose in life is to make provisions for safe and sustainable waste disposal practices. “The energy that comes along with it is secondary,” he said.

WTE has relatively low CO₂ emissions–comparable to those of natural gas used for electricity generation–and offsets the fossil fuels that would be used to generate an equivalent amount of electricity. Less municipal waste is sent to landfills so less methane is produced–a gas with a global warming potential 21 times that of CO₂.

“Elk River has converted almost 6 million tons of garbage into renewable electric generation over the last 20 years,” said Tim Steinbeck, plant manager at the Minnesota facility. “We recycled an older facility through many years of change and coupled with the RDF processing plant, we keep 100 people in green jobs.”

The New and the Old

When the Lee County WTE Facility Expansion Project went into commercial operation in November 2007, it was among the first new municipal waste combustion (MWC) facilities built in the U. S. in more than 10 years. The project, which is owned by the Lee County Solid Waste Division, was completed for less than its original budget of $123 million.

Two MWCs with a 39 MW turbine generator were already in operation at the site when the new unit was built. The new unit has a stand-alone 19 MW turbine generator and can convert 636 tons of waste per day into renewable power–recovering approximately 600 kWh from each ton of municipal waste.

Lee County refuse trucks take the garbage collected curbside to the plant complex for combustion. The facility uses reclaimed water for all process water needs, including boiler makeup water, and captures ferrous and non-ferrous metals from the post-combustion process for sale into the metals marketplace.

By contrast, Elk River Station has been through several iterations since it began commercial operations in 1950, including a short stint as a nuclear power plant.

At first, Elk River burned coal and oil. Construction of the nuclear reactor began in 1958 and it started producing electricity in 1963. By 1968, the reactor was decommissioned and Elk River once again burned coal and oil. In 1989, Great River undertook a $33 million conversion project to create the RDF plant. Now, Elk River Station’s three generators produce 35 to 42 MW, using approximately 300,000 tons of RDF annually.

Waste is collected from five Minnesota counties and shipped to the RDF processing facility, where recyclable and non-combustible materials are removed. What’s left is shredded. Out of 1,500 tons of municipal waste sent to the processing facility each day, about 1,250 tons of fuel stock is produced.

Great River Energy says the plant reduces the amount of waste entering the state’s landfills by more than 400,000 tons a year. Great River Energy is the second largest electric utility in Minnesota in terms of generating capacity and the fifth largest generation and transmission (G&T) cooperative in the U.S. in terms of assets.

Plenty of Fuel

Since the economic downturn there has been a slight decrease in the amount of RDF from the processing facility, said Elk River’s Steinbeck. Elk River Station burned 281,727 tons of RDF in 2008.

Seasonal blips also occur in the fuel pipeline at which times the plant cannot operate at full capacity, but Steinbeck said that is usually a small percentage of its total annual hours.

Elk River is in the process of negotiating long-term contracts with local counties and is also investigating burning some tire-derived fuel, for which the plant is already permitted.

In Florida, meanwhile, the amount of garbage Lee County’s residents were producing exceeded the combustion capacity of the existing MWCs as recently as nine years ago.

“Although they had 1,200 tons per day of combustion capacity, they were hauling garbage to their landfill, which was filling up,” said HDR Engineering’s Castro. “Since we’ve completed the project, virtually the only thing going to the landfill is ash.”

O&M Challenges

RDF at 5,500 Btu per pound is similar to low-grade coal or the lignite that Great River burns in some of its other large generating facilities, but there are challenging differences.

“RDF is a very difficult fuel to handle and meter,” said Steinbeck. “It’s been a long evolution over our 20-year history to modify our fuel handling system to improve our operations.”

A bin modification project is currently underway to improve the material handling system to get the fuel to meter into the boilers better.

“The better we can meter, the better we can control emissions and adjust our air,” said Steinbeck.

A second big difference between burning coal and RDF is the problems RDF causes in the boiler. When everything in the garbage is combusted, plant operators have to deal with corrosion, said Castro. In particular, chlorides — which come from the chlorine in the waste stream — form an acidic gas compound that will attack the boiler tubes.

“Garbage is a much tougher fuel to burn than nearly anything I can think of because it’s changing from minute to minute,” said Castro. “Over time, we have learned to deal with those high temperatures combined with acidic gases but it’s a pervasive problem and it increases your maintenance costs.”

The solutions are better metallurgy, good boiler design and carefully monitored maintenance. The economics of replacing certain boiler tubes every couple of years or paying extra to improve the metallurgy dramatically to extend that time frame have to be calculated for each project.

Boiler pressure parts at Elk River have been upgraded with appropriate alloys to withstand the chloride corrosion.

There is an economy of scale to O&M for WTE plants. “These units do enjoy economy of scale but that’s a dual-edged sword,” said Castro. “It means you have to do big plants to be cost-effective and you need a pretty good population center to do big plants.”

When smaller plants are built, key functions are still needed, like crane operators who must be on duty no matter how many tons they are loading.

At Elk River, the equipment’s age is an ongoing challenge. Steinbeck said the company is committed to making continuous safety and operations improvements.

“One of our major challenges with operating a near-60-year-old power plant is modernization and obsolescence so we continue to look at making sure we have a safe operating facility and replace equipment that can no longer be economically serviced,” he said.

Emissions

Lee County was one of the first projects of its type to be permitted and built under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s new source performance standards for municipal waste combustion facilities since they were promulgated in the mid-1990s. It also was among the first since the state of Florida tightened requirements for nitrogen oxide (NO_X) emissions. Environmental compliance was achieved with a combination of flue gas recirculation and advanced selective noncatalytic reduction (SNCR) controls, using urea as the reagent.

“The NO_X limits were a concern during the permitting and design phase but they have turned out to not be an issue in the operating phase,” said Castro. “Our initial NO_X was 140 parts per million (PPM), but each month it drops and at 110 ppm that’s where we’ll stay.”

There are two categories of WTE plant emissions: those that are monitored on a continuous basis, like NO_X, carbon monoxide (CO), opacity and sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and those that are checked annually, including particulates, hydrogen chlorides, dioxins, mercury and a few more exotic parameters, which are measured from the stack.

In 2008, Elk River reported a total of six CO exceedances, the lowest number in several years, and one opacity spike while isolating a baghouse compartment to replace a leaking bag. (For caption and credit information, click on this image in the gallery below.)

“Emissions are different and less than from coal,” said Steinbeck. “At Elk River, we scrub and have a bag house. We filter 100 percent of the flue gas and control the SO₂ through our dry scrubber system.”

Elk River also must control for chlorides and hydrogen chloride gas. Its scrubber system takes out almost 100 percent of the hydrogen chloride and almost 90 percent of the sulfur dioxide.

The operating costs of running the Lee County facility on a day-to-day basis are roughly offset by the energy and recovered material sales, said Castro. Electricity is sold to Seminole Electric, a generation co-op that resells it wholesale to its members.

“What that leaves you with is the debt service, which is typically paid off on a 20- or 25-year basis,” he said. The debt retirement cost remains with the generator, but it’s a stable cost, like a mortgage.

Even so, it remains cheaper to dig a hole in the ground and fill it with garbage. “The challenge is still the cost; it’s more expensive than the landfill option,” said Steinbeck.

The Renewables Premium

Elk River Station is considered a renewable energy producer so it is part of Great River Energy’s renewables portfolio.

“Great River Energy sees value in that aspect of it,” said Steinbeck. “With its older technology, it’s not as efficient as a state-of-the-art pulverized coal facility, but it’s equal to or better than comparable biomass renewable or certainly wind generation in our area.”

If a federally mandated renewable portfolio standard (RPS) becomes law, electricity from the WTE plants will become more valuable and demand a premium. Steinbeck said an RPS could push local communities to do further research into WTE plants as they work to put renewable energy into their portfolios.

The Lee County WTE is already cashing in.

“Lee is one of the first waste-to-energy units in Florida to sell renewable energy credits along with their energy and capacity,” said Castro. “They are making about $1 million a year selling RECs to Seminole Electric.”

RECs could help offset the differential between the costs of a WTE plant and the landfill option. There are other economics that could tip the scales in WTE’s favor, too. Today, in some areas of the Northeast where new landfills cannot be sited, garbage is shipped out of state and fuel costs are rising. At some point, digging a hole in the ground and filling it with garbage may no longer be the favored option

Fresh off of the release of their new album “MASSIVE AGGRESSIVE”, Municipal Waste have announced the “WASTE THE WORLD TOUR 2009”. Providing direct support on the tour will be Goatwhore from 11/06-11/16, The Accused from 11/18-12/03, and Brutal Truth from 12/04-12/11. Appearing on all dates will be Phobia and Cauldron. Singer Tony Foresta had the following to say about the tour: “I’m really excited to finally get back on the road and do a full headlining WASTE tour in the states. It’s been a really long time since we’ve done on our own headlining run and I think it has been long past due. People should expect a far more rowdier gig then the ones we’ve played while opening for bands. I’m looking forward to trashing venues all over the states. I’m also really pumped about the bands on this tour. It is going to be one to remember!”

Well, as I was reading my last post i just could nod with my head and ask myself where was my logical thinking before. Anyways, I think its my first and last trip to Finland with Ryanair. tickets were cheap but at the end I spent more money, time and energy on getting to Helsinki as if I had booked a ticket directly from Hamburg.

P.S I missed Municipal waste for the third time! Also lost camera, but luckily found it. And thanks to nice ppl camer has been sent to me back.
