People are suprised when I tell them that after living for two and a half years in Italy, I still had not been to Venice. My reason? Venice has the reputation for being touristy and expensive and I had neither the funds nor

 the patience to deal with that. However, this past week during my European trip to Paris, Venice and Rome (more posts later), I found that Venice could be enjoyed without breaking my budget.

Venetian Secrets?

1. Affordable Accomodation: Forget the four star hotels, the true Venetian treasures are found in the back streets. We stayed at Al Saor, a bed and breakfast that was 50 Euro a night (on the off season) that provided breakfast and was a three minute walk from a vapporetto stop. Unless you need space to have a cocktail party in your room, this clean and convenient hotel was perfect.

2 Wine Bars and Cichetti: While tourist menus and sub par food abound, Venetians flock to local wine bars which serve appetizers called ‘cichetti.’ Before or after dinner, these establishments serve a variety of wines for decent prices (3 to 4 euros per glass) and display unique appetizers for free with wine or for a small price. I found several excellent wines that we drank overlooking a canal. These unique experiences could easily serve as dinner.

3. Local areas of Venice: If you are looking for a different scene from the expensive (though worthwhile) San

Venetian NeighborhoodMarco area, wander along the coast (or take a traghetto) to the neighborhoods near the Arsenal. Here, true Italian life is abundant, with Venetians buying fresh fruit straight off a boat, enjoying prosecco at the bars and conducting business. With nary a tourist in site, we enjoyed food out of a pasticerria (pastry shop), capuccino at reasonable prices, and vistas of canals without being jostled by vendors.Another tip is to pay for a traghetto pass (which includes visits to Murano and Burano) instead of a Sunset on a Traghetto

one way ticket. We also enjoyed taking the traghetto at night- the lights along the canal were just as romantic as a ride in a gondola. With the scenic canals, alleys and bright colors of Venice the need to spend a load of money was replaced with an appreciation for the simple charm of this island city.

Venice is one of the world’s biggest tourist destinations, so it doesn’t need much selling from this blog. What I would like to say though, is that when you go, slow down. Venice is such an easy place to get caught up in sight seeing. The Basilica di San Marco, The Doge’s Palace, The Accademia, Le Fenice, La Torre dell’Orologio, Rialto bridge, the legendary “Bridge of Sighs,” the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Palazzo Ducale, and of course the endless arrays of the famous Murano glass are all unmissable sights and it takes a lot of focus to make sure you catch them all; as a result, people tend to come for a couple hours, knock the names off a list, and head out. In fact, the first time I went, that’s what I did. Staying there is expensive and the endless mass of tourists in La Piazza di San Marco are strong deterrents for an extended stay, I get it. But, if you make Venice a day trip, you wont love it.

The sights are amazing, but they can’t be done quickly. The Doge’s Palace is huge. Particularly after a comparatively momentary walk around the Basilica di San Marco, it will have felt like days by the time you exit. But, if you are going to get lost in time, the palace is a great place to do so.

The Accademia houses so much fantastic Italian art, even with a strong pace, you can’t get out in more than a couple hours. Somehow your feet get bogged down in Titian’s deep reds; time slows as you ponder da Vinci’s mesmerizing “Vitruvian Man;” you have to shove through Veronese’s crowded works after climbing, inch by inch, out of the depths of Tintoretto’s perspectives; you find yourself frozen in front of Giorgione’s “Tempest,” admiring the incoming storm, only to find yourself finally glancing at a watch while rushing a cursory scan of one a Liss snap shot of life. After doggedly leaving the gallery, a lazy drink during a Venetian dusk is the only thing you’ll want to do- three more stops before grabbing the late train really isn’t realistic. But, if you are on a time crunch and have to do Venice in a weekend, bite your lip, dig down and sight see for a day; because then you can spend a day as a Venetian.

After spending Saturday running around from stop to stop and bottle of water to bottle of water, Sunday should be for hanging. Back track to those labyrinthine streets that you wondered through, lost, from the train station to (what you thought was the unavoidable conclusion to every street) Basilica di San Marco. Find that lazy piazza with the umbrella covered tables, savory aromas leaking through windows, with the kids playing calcio and old men people watching, cane in hand, Compari not far from reach.

Sit down and be lazy and take in the atmosphere and history of Venice. Sitting around with Venetians, your mind will drift back to its days of commercial superstardom, when the streets were full not of tourists, but velvet and silk clad merchants- Dutch, German, Turk. When master mask shops were flanked not by souvenir stands, but brothels and inns. As you day dream, a procession suddenly emerges from one of the alleys- an entire congregation walking, in song, behind some forgotten relic. An off duty gondolier, exhausted and enjoying a cigarette next to his vessel on the canal, begins a beautiful and tragic song. Even the locals stop for a moment, put forks down, pick up the ball, or turn off the hose to hear the lament.

Un-categorical, Venice is the tourism capital off the world, but remains a place where you can experience that true rustic feel of Italy. So, don’t miss the true gem. When you schedule your next trip to Venice, make sure to leave a day of nothingness, so you can have a cappuccino and some sardines and jam on toast and experience the life of a Venetian for a day.

La joyería modular es una tendencia que emergió en Europa y Estados Unidos a partir de 2002. Lo scrigno dei segreti, la rivisitazione in chiave moderna del salotto letterario è una serie di appuntamenti culturali in cui in modo creativo e attento alle dinamiche del territorio l’Archivio dannunziano, progetto scientifico internazionale rivolto alla promozione dell’opera e della figura di Gabriele d’Annunzio, (www.archiviodannunzio.it) presenta una Venezia inedita e, attraverso il legame tra l’autore e Venezia, presenta realtà contemporanee che ben si addicono a quel vivere inimitabile e quella pulsione artistica che sempre caratterizzò la vita e l’arte di Gabriele d’Annunzio.

Non “solo” quindi arte, letteratura e “segreti” di Venezia, ma anche il forte legame che si crea tra cultura e impresa per portare esemplificazioni di come la cultura crea business e viceversa di come l’imprenditoria può supportare la cultura.

Dopo il primo appuntamento che ha visto tra gli ospiti Luigino Rossi, Presidente di Rossi Moda S.p.A. con il suo museo aziendale della scarpa e Lorenzo Marini, Direttore artistico di Lorenzo Marini Associati presso il suggestivo Palazzo Barbarigo (Design Hotel), si prosegue l’itinerario in un’altra suggestiva dimora dannunziana il prestigioso The Westin Europa & Regina.

Si passa dalle introduzioni del Dott. Filippo Caburlotto, noto studioso dannunziano autore di volumi e del commento al Fuoco, opera veneziana del Vate, alle esperienze dei suoi ospiti. Filo conduttore della serata il moto del cuore, ovvero l’imprenditorialità creativa, quando la passione coinvolge il business.

D’Annunzio e il volo, il “rapporto personale” del Generale Giorgio Paternò con Gabriele d’Annunzio e la passione per la storia di Venezia che porta alla ricostruzione di uno dei suoi simboli: il Bucintoro.

L’Arciorgano di Dardi Seguso e il vetro come massima espressione artistica nell’arte e nella vita di Gabriele d’Annunzio. L’esperienza del creare raccontata dal Maestro Seguso discendente “del maestro vetraio raccontato nel Fuoco”.

D’Annunzio e la passione per i suoi libri, dalla scelta della carta alla rilegatura, al font. La passione per la realizzazione di un libro e quella del collezionare “la storia dell’editoria” raccontata dal Dott. Silvio Antiga della Fondazione Tipoteca e Grafiche Antiga.

La tarde noche llegó y cruzamos el Puente de Rialto que según la historia narra que la evolución y la importancia del Mercado de Rialto en la orilla oriental del canal aumentó el tráfico de personas considerablemente, las cuales hace ya muchos siglos solo utilizaban un puente flotante para cruzar. Este puente flotante fue reemplazado por uno de madera y el actual puente de piedra que está formado por un arco. El Puente de Rialto, es uno de los íconos arquitectónicos de la ciudad de Venecia y que decir de su mercado, que por el gran colorido de sus puestos, despierta en uno el ánimo de tomar fotos sin ton ni son. Abaixo, coloco algumas sugestões pessoais de hotéis bons e com ótimo preço em Paris! A localização fica a seu critério. Algumas pessoas estarão pela primeira vez em Paris e com certeza vão preferir uma localização de mais fácil acesso às principais atrações. Outras, já estiveram várias vezes, e talvez prefiram tentar bairros mais charmosos!

- Mama Shelter: Hotel Boutique 3 estrelas com design arrojado de Philippe  Starck. Os apartamentos mais simples medem a partir de 18m2 mas existem opções mais amplas.
