Saturday morning. Time for a nice lie in. Instead of leaping into a beta wake-up, I decided to spend some time in la-la-land with a deep theta session. I love the way the new NP3 sessions sound.

As I lay there blissing out, my faithful Procyon providing the AS lightshow, I realised that even when my eyes are quite still, the brightness comfortable, I can feel my eyes quivering. What is the iris response time and can it be measured?

Abort deep theta. Hook up EEG. Two channels, channel one on left side of forehead, below hairline, channel two in corner of right eye. Alter BioExplorer gains and filters to get a good picture from each electrode (much more activity at eye than forehead).

Restart deep theta, lay back and relax.

The two outputs were surprisingly similar, except the eye signal was three-four times the amplitude. Substantial 10Hz activity, plus a weaker signal that closely followed the session frequencies. The eye signal was much more stable and consistent.

Okay, so there’s brain just below the surface pretty well anywhere on the head, but that doesn’t adequately explain the high amplitude of signals near the eye. I’d love to hear from anyone else who can try these measurements to see what they make of them. My impression is that the auto-iris function of the eye is doing its utmost to adjust to the constantly changing light level, with measurable EMG activity closely corresponding to the stimulus.

I will, of course, be investigating this further, but it provides an interesting challenge in assessing brain rhythm significance.

Cheers,
Craig

Bon jeudi soir, youpi!

November 26, 2009

Dear Diary,

I went to my nutritionist/trainer yesterday. I was honestly scared because I haven’t been that religious about eating, and have drank a lot lately. I didn’t gain though, still at 149lbs but I did lose a bit more body fat!

Goals is to not gain over the holidays and to improve body fat. Maybe to make shakes that can last me all day (balanced, enough for 3 meals).

Also he showed me workouts for when I have no time to get to the gym.

Upperbody: Pushups! Start with a set of 15. Rest 30 seconds. Do a set of 14, rest for 30. Set of 13, rest for 30 and so on. Upper body workout in a short time!

Lowerbody: Squats! Set of single leg squats, each leg. Then wall squats. Start at a set of 15 with 30 second breaks. Work down to set of 1 as above.

Intervals: Do a set of pushups, squats, crunch, sprint. Do for 15 minutes.

TO THE GUN SHOW!!!!

Woo-pah!!!! Seriously, whose arm is this? Albeit, the flexing, lighting and flattering angle helps My face is cut out because I’d just stumbled out of bed and it’s smeared in drool and yesterday’s mascara.

Now, I’m not one to go flaunting my body around town, especially on the internet. But, well, I’m kinda proud of my little muscle! You’ve probably heard me whine before that aaalllll my body fat goes to my stomach. So, in my head, my composition looks like this big round middle with skinny arms and legs poking out. I don’t really want to lose any more body fat to take care of the tummy situation (Chris may dump me if my boobs get any smaller ). BUT, I can work on making my arms and legs look a little more solid. Apparently, that work has so far been paying off

In other news I want to thankyouthankyouthankyou for the kind and congratulatory comments about my new job prospects. I am so lucky to have not only a supportive family behind me, but a slew of blog friends out there backing me up as well I’m a little apprehensive about announcing it to my wider circle of acquaintances, co-workers and old schoolmates. They all think I’m crazy for leaving a solid journalism job. For so long I’ve been told that I’m a good journalist. I think that’s why I stuck it out, because I was just following the praise. These people just assume I’d do what I’m good at, but being good at something is not enough.

Plus, as my mommy pointed out, not one person in my family works in the field of their undergraduate degree. The best example being my lovely sister Jane. She was a star psychology student, and gave it all up after graduation to pursue her passion for music. She’s now got two albums under her belt and living a life she loves making music in Quebec City (which you can listen to here!)

Minutes after registering for the personal training course yesterday, I got this in my inbox:

Is that a sign or what!? Totally unrelated too, the e-mail just popped up out of the blue. I can’t go though because I have to stay in Fredericton. Would have been nice to scope out what it’s like to work there.

So this morning, I tried out something that’s been a long time coming – eggs in a basket!

Eggs + toast is my favourite breakfast, and I’d never tried it!

There was some dippage happening…

It was fun Although, I think I still prefer the usual fried egg on top.

I had a date with the treadmill today, so I snacked on another new-to-me Larabar flavour for some <strike>sugar</strike> energy.

Is there coconut oil in the American version too? I’m not opposed to coconut oil, from everything I’ve read it’s pretty good for you (in moderation, of course )

First, I found it was really mushy. If I buy this again, I’ll keep it in the fridge. It was good but if I had to choose, I like the cocoa coconut better. This is kinda plain, like just dates and coconut. I know that’s the point, but it was just missing a little sumthin’.

My “dreadmill” sesh was stellar today!

On a 1% incline:

2 minutes @ 3.0 mph
3 minutes @ 3.5 mph
5 minutes @ 5.8 mph
10 minutes of 1-minute intervals @ 5.8 mph & 6.2 mph
10 minutes of 1-minute intervals @ 6.0 mph & 6.4 mph
10 minutes of 1-minute intervals @ 6.2 mph & 6.6 mph
10 minutes of 1-minute intervals @ 6.4 mph & 6.8 mph
5 minutes @ 5.8 mph
3 minutes @ 3.5 mph
2 minutes @ 3.0 mph

The last time I did this workout, I found it to be a touch too easy, so this time I upped the speed a little – it was perfect! I never felt like I had to stop, but those last set of intervals were hard. And yay for getting faster!! Hope I can get those numbers to keep going up. Oh, and on my last 6.8 mph interval, the final chorus of “Don’t Stop Believing" from the Glee Soundtrack kicked in on my iPod. Yeah, it was epic.

Since I got home for a late lunch, and needed to do an early dinner before work tonight, I though it would be a perfect opportunity to test out a liquid lunch.

1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk

1/4 cup cottage cheese

1 banana

1 tbsp almond butter

1 scoop Chocolate Amazing Meal

handful ice

387 calories, 13g fat, 23g protein, 46g carbohydrates, 12g fibre. Not too shabby, right? I mean, that’s what any other meal looks like for me. I think I felt full-ish after drinking it. But within 90 minutes, I was feeling snacky and wanted something to chew. I thought the fibre in the Amazing Grass would save me, apparently not. This girl needs her food to be solid.

I was ravenous come supper time (at 4:30).

More leftover chicken! Today I put it in a pita with blackberry jam, onions, spinach, sprouts and swiss cheese. Grilled to melty perfection. I’m running low on chicken. Need to roast more stat

Eating and exercise aside, I had quite the surprise today. I saw the Canada Post lady walk to my back door this afternoon with a package. I always miss my packages, so I jumped up and met her at the door. I was hoping it would be my recent Amazon purchase or PT course materials. But I was handed a big unfamiliar box. When I ripped it open, I discovered this:

A FOOD PROCESSOR!!!!! Holymolyasjbgeiuhsfskg. As soon as I saw the note from Janetha attached, I started crying. JB, this is one of the sweetest things anyone has done for me, thank you SO much!!!! You are such a wonderful person, I don’t even know where to start!

Regular readers know I’ve been vying for a food processor for a while, but I haven’t been able to bring myself to splurge on a nice one for myself.

It’s the perfect size for making hummus! (and baby food as the box implies?) Janetha, I will get on the hummus making immediately so I have more recipes to share with you in thanks for the amazing gift

And with that, it’s super late and this granny needs to hit the hay.

Question of the Day: What should I make in my new food processor?

summer in november.

Well today was the first day i did not have to wake at the crack of dawn to train anyone. i have to admit it feels pretty wierd. so i figured i would have a day of total relax. dog walk? check. started getting ready for a few photoshoots in the next 6-8 weeks, so i hopped on the bike trainer with a copy of Tom Robbins’ “Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates” mmm hmm. rode for a good 25 min pre breakfast while sippin on some glutamine and bcaas. google it. im here to blog not describe….. after feeling the summer temp outside, my mind was racing to find something to do that didnt involve three layers of clothes. as always, the first thought wasto mountain bike… but i went yesterday and frankly legs were very fatigued. scratch that. cut the grass? im sure that can wait. So i figured id have a recuperative day. eat clean, clean the kitchen, read the social media bible and look where that took me …. blogging for the first time. if only i could type faster/better. Fueled by my wifes overly strong coffee, (i prefer the low acid weak morning brew) i watch these letters appear from taps of my shaky fingers. i suppose i am being productive and motivating myself to grow my business through an outreach into cyberspace, but chances are most of you know id much rather work with people than spend my day behind a computer screen. well this coffee is kickin in so i wanna go work out, i guess ill end up pushing the mower all around the yard for the next hour….

The quick answer: LEGS

Long answer: Your legs are the most powerful part of your body.

The quadriceps femoris (Latin for “four-headed [muscle] of the femur”), also called simply the quadriceps, quadriceps extensor, quads, is a large muscle group that includes the four prevailing muscles on the front of the thigh. It is the great extensor muscle of the knee, forming a large fleshy mass which covers the front and sides of the femur. It is the strongest and leanest muscle in the human body. (wikipedia)

When you work your leg muscles you burn the most calories, fat and energy leading to a stronger base and an amplified strength. Your legs not only consist of the quad muscles but also the calves, thighs, gluteus and hip muscles. They all account for your foundation which the rest of your body relies upon.

The Workout:

1.Assited Squats (one hand on wall for stabilization): 3 sets of 10 reps – 6 minutes

Stretch (muscles should be stretched with blood flow present): hamstrings, calves, quads

2. One-leg stair lunge (Skip every other stair while lunging into a deep stretch): 2 sets of 10 reps – 8 minutes

3. Calf Raise: Put your toes on the edge of a stair and thrust up on our tip toes, the lower to a stretch: 3 sets of 15 reps – 10 minutes

4. Wall Squats: place yourself in a sitting position up against a wall and hold yourself there for 30 seconds. do this 2 times – 5 minutes

Sometimes weight can be deceiving.

Here we are: Monday morning, and time for the big weigh-in. Before you step on the scale, be prepared. You may have lost only a tiny bit of weight—or none at all. Sometimes you even gain weight before you lose it. Huh, you say? I’ve worked so hard!

Let me explain.

If you start your fitness program by exercising, you’ll be gaining muscle mass. And a pound of muscle is only about a third the size of a pound of fat. So even if you weigh the same, you’ll be losing inches. Your clothes will fit better and you’ll find it easier to move.

My scale displays not only weight, but body fat and water percentages. I don’t subscribe to its total accuracy, but its general trends reveal progress where, by weight alone, sometimes none would be evident.

More good news: One pound of muscle burns 6 calories a day, whereas a pound of fat burns only 2 calories a day. So the more muscle mass you gain, the easier it’ll be for you to lose pounds. (Kind of like compound interest!)

So if your scale reading hasn’t dropped as much as you’d hoped, take heart. Things are changing. You are progressing. Keep it up!

Here’s my progress for week one:

Last week: 199.6 pounds, body fat 31%, body water 42.5%

This week: 196.2, body fat 29%, body water 43.5%

’Til tomorrow…Stay determined and resolute!

I wanted to start with the trite phrase, “There’s nothing more frustrating than…

I wanted to start with the trite phrase, “There’s nothing more frustrating than…” but it wouldn’t end with the truth. The truth is sports injuries are frustrating. More frustrating I think is injuring yourself doing something menial like getting up from the floor after picking up lego. You know, those amazing building blocks that manage to spread themselves the entire length and breadth of what ever room they’re played in!

I rad a quick 5 km yesterday and was proud of some of the sprinting I was doing along the way. I worked on feeling the movement of extending my kick and keeping my arms relaxed but working with my stride. I was concentrating on them and the rest of my joints during the run. I wasn’t expecting to have knee troubles later in the day. Learn to expect the unexpected.

When we run, we ignore pain. It is the only way to sustain the run. There are aches and strains as we stretch. There are groans in our bones as we begin to set the pace. Our muscles resist with a sigh as we speed up and demand more. The lungs respond in kind to deliver the oxygen needed. We can stop the pain if we stop running but we don’t. We run. So, if we get a pain, we ignore it. We alter our pace, we change our gait.

Perhaps, I knew the faster pace was going to have repercussions to my joints. Perhaps, I was thinking of the concrete under my feet coming just a little too hard against my bones. Perhaps, I was thinking of my friend who separated his intercostal muscle 5 minutes into a half marathon and had to be carried off the course by his wife and two small kids. He had been suffering from a “bad back” for months of running and hadn’t complained enough to someone who could help, his doctor!

Strange pains happen for a reason. I had a strange pain getting up from cleaning the lego last night. I could barely walk by the time I was home putting kids to be and icing was the wrong tack. I think before I go too much further I am going to have to commit to seeing my doctor about it. Knees don’t get better on their own and I am not likely to give up running anytime soon!

So many people I work with are taking totally the wrong approach to fat loss and getting lean physiques.

Cardio, cardio and more cardio seems to be the answer for most people. But in reality building lean muscle is the number 1 most important factor in anyone’s fat loss journey.

The more lean muscle you have the faster you metabolism works and the quicker you burn fat. It’s really is that simple! Muscle burns fat super-efficiently.

But please don’t think building lean muscle means you are going to have great big muscles and look like bodybuilders. YOU WON’T! This won’t happen ladies, please believe me when I say that.

Doing weights in the gym is one way of achieving this, but by no means the only way. You can do resistance exercises at home without any equipment whatsoever that will build lean muscle. Search the site and click the link at he bottom of the page for examples of how.

Today’s Takeaway – Building Lean Muscle = Fat Loss. Simple.

Visitors often joke about me drugging our horses because they’re so calm. By Judy Oldmeadow, Owner

Visitors often joke about me drugging our horses because they’re so calm.

By Judy Oldmeadow, Owner & Master Horsewoman, Samaria Creek Morgan Horses

An old breeder once told me, ‘I’ve been to places with one or two quiet horses, but never one where the whole herd is quiet and friendly!’

We have over 40 horses. And when a new one arrives with insecure behaviour, it becomes calm and tractable in a very short time – sometimes only days.

Owners visiting their horses after several months often don’t recognise them and make comments like, ‘She’s standing taller’, He’s moving more smoothly’ and recently of an older brood mare, ‘She looks proud and happy’.

I used to attribute this to my training methods. As I’ve matured, however, I’ve noticed how much our living environment, natural pasture and wonderful water contribute to calm, peaceful horses with sound feet, bones and joints.

Magnesium is often called the ‘nerve mineral’. It regulates nerve fibres, controls the central nervous system and helps with muscle and glandular function.

Horses deficient in this element can show nervousness, wariness, excitability and muscle tremors. This gives magnesium its reputation for having a calming influence on equines.

Horses have a limited ability to store magnesium. Problems arising from deficiency usually manifest quickly.

Magnesium deficiency is becoming widespread in Australia. It’s more readily inhibited than calcium by artificial fertilisers. It’s also made inert in the body by the sodium fluoride in some water supplies.

A study of magnesium uptake in horses was conducted by six veterinarians at the Department of Veterinary Biosciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, at Ohio State University.

It found the magnesium requirement of a typical horse was at 13 mg / kg of body weight per day. Horses growing, lactating or working use more (a lot of magnesium can be lost in sweat).

Opinions vary widely on magnesium supplements. It naturally depends in part on whether the soils on which a horse is grazing are deficient in the element. Such deficiency will be reflected in the grass grown.

In general, a horse gets 60-100% of its daily magnesium needs through a normal forage diet.

Deficiencies are most likely in spring (during periods of strong grass growth) and winter on pastures in milder areas (where grass is being pushed along with fertiliser).

Grass in both circumstances is likely to be low in magnesium, sodium and soluble carbohydrates, and high in nitrogen and potassium.

This is a double whammy: high potassium levels can slow the absorption of what little magnesium there is, while sodium (low in these situations) helps uptake.

Mechanisms affecting magnesium uptake in a horse are complex and not always diet related. Deficiency may just as likely be due to too much dietary potassium inhibiting uptake.

Nor is potassium the only potential player in this tricky equation. The presence and proportions of dietary calcium, phosphorous and fats also impact a horse’s ability to use the magnesium in its diet.

A deficient horse is likely to have a poor tolerance for work. Its muscles tie up quite quickly.

Magnesium even plays an important part in reducing equine obesity, and can lessen the risk of laminitis in animals prone to it during periods of strong spring grass growth.

Next time you’re looking for someone to care for your horse, make sure magnesium is on your list of ‘tough questions’.

Click here for a copy of our water report, which includes magnesium.
