Mary O’Dwyer is the author of several books. Her latest is Hold it Sister available on www.Amazon.co.uk and on www.incostress.com Read more about the amazing work of Mary helping women. www.holditsister.com

Below is what she has to say.

When I run workshops for women, fitness trainers and Physiotherapists, one routine test for participants is to feel what happens at their waist with strong coughing, then relate whether their pelvic floor lifts and holds or pushes down. Typically 50% of the participants relate their pelvic floor pushes down, instead of drawing up in response to the quick rise of intra abdominal pressure. This uncoordinated muscle action between the floor and abdominal muscles is likely to continue with lifting and exercise, further damaging pelvic floor muscle (PFM) control. Some women display a faulty pattern where by they narrow their waist as they tighten their pelvic floor muscles, again increasing the intra-abdominal pressure.

It is critical to identify women who have PFM control problems before they begin an exercise program. Traditional abdominal programs, some group classes, weighted machines and high level core exercises overwhelm the ability of a weak, uncoordinated pelvic floor to control intra abdominal pressure rises. These women must first identify and exercise the correct pattern of pelvic floor, core and abdominal muscle tensioning, before exercise progresses.

Carol attended a recent workshop I gave for the fitness industry. She is a very experienced fitness trainer, who recognised immediately her faulty ‘waist sucking’ pattern during exercise. After a short session to help her relearn the correct pattern she managed to make fundamental changes by training her pelvic floor and core control without the sucking in. She realised how important this was for her female clients and later wrote to me saying,

‘For many gym members, the focus is on exercise classes, personal training sessions and their own strength and cardio exercise. How important it is to teach awareness of core muscle control throughout the exercise movements rather than just counting repetitions. Women will control and prevent PFM damage when they recognise for themselves, when to rest and re-set, go from high impact to low impact, reduce the weight they’re lifting, drop back from running to walking, and so on to maintain core stability. PFM health will be promoted when women learn their mind-body connection, practice pelvic floor safe exercises and develop core stability before progressing to strengthening exercises. ‘

Carol now realises it is not only the ‘at risk’ group, but all women who will benefit from an awareness of potential problems to the female pelvic floor with exercise training.

Your 40s

You could be losing one percent of bone from your spine every year during this decade. That’s why you need to be especially diligent.

Diet/Fitness In addition to keeping up the calcium (still 1,000 mg), you should add weight training to your workouts, to help strengthen muscles around your bones.

Doctor visit If you experience early menopause, get a bone-density test; you’re greater risk for osteoporosis than if you go through menopause at the average age (51).

Your 50s and beyond

Bone loss accelerates at menopause; you can lose up to 20 percent of bone density in the first 5 to 7 years.

Diet/Fitness Your calcium requirements go up to 1,200 mg; add another serving of calcium-rich foods or an additional supplement. If you didn’t start weight training earlier, now’s the time. Lifting even light weights will make you stronger and protected you against falls, a serious threat as you get older and sustain fractures more easily.

Doctor visit Find out where you stand. Ask about a bone-density test; if your mineral stores are low, your doctor may suggest hormone-replacement therapy (estrogen) or raloxifene (brand name: Evista). These can cut the risk of a fracture by 39 to 50 percent. Other drugs that can help: alendronate sodium (Fosamax) and risedronate sodium (Actonel), which help build new bone. – Sally Katigbak

Okay, I’ve failed you all again. As much as I enjoyed my first pilates class, I never went back. I did pull off a brief stint at an ROTC training class, but quickly found that it was not a sustainable form of exercise for me – I was in constant pain for the next four days. I had to crawl up the stairs on my hands and knees. Yeah, it was bad.

So in the spirit of trying new things, I thought I’d take this opportunity to explore some other fitness options, just to mix it up a bit. Most gyms, clubs and campus fitness centers offer a wide array of classes. From cycling to hip-hop dance, yoga to hiking, these classes give wannabes like me the chance to try out new, more interactive forms of exercise. They also seem more fun than the basic strength-building options, and less intimidating to fitness newbies like me. Try one of these standard fitness classes first – then experiment with the more “wild” alternatives!

Cardio Kickboxing: According to my college’s wellness site, cardio kickboxing helps you “work up a sweat by kicking, blocking, and punching your way through class.” Kickboxing has the added benefit of learning basic self-defense techniques, but it also seems like classes would be really intense. It’s probably something to work up to, not necessarily the best choice for beginners.

Step: For fitness traditionalists, step classes offer a no-nonsense approach to building and toning your muscles. You’ll increase your endurance by learning basic choreography to fun, energizing music. And because most gyms and clubs offer multiple levels of step classes, step is a great activity for those of us looking for a specific fitness track to follow.

Water Aerobics: These classes focus on building endurance and toning muscles. Unlike other fitness options, though, the water component creates a no-impact environment (which means anyone can do it). Most water aerobics classes take place in the shallow end of the pool, so you don’t need to be a strong swimmer to get involved. But for those looking for an added challenge, many gyms and pools offer a deep water alternative.

After browsing my list of options, water aerobics seems like it would be a great fit. Feeling sore after exercising gives me another excuse to avoid going to the gym, but water aerobics is a low-impact activity that seems like a lot of fun. I’ll try it out and let you know how it goes.

What types of fitness classes have you attended? Which ones would you recommend?

TRENDY SHOES: Behind the looks, there lies a long-term problem such as clawed toes, calluses, heel a

TRENDY SHOES: Behind the looks, there lies a long-term problem such as clawed toes, calluses, heel and knee pain

Trendy shoes are the latest fashion for teenagers who just can’t resist grabbing a pair, but British experts have warned these stylish footwears could cause severe body pain in the future.

For parents, these shoes look pretty sensible as most have little or no heel, for instance, and they often have rubber soles. But behind the looks, there lies a long-term problems such as clawed toes, calluses, heel and knee pain, the experts said.

“You have one pair of feet and need them for life, and yet teenagers today are wearing shoes which don’t support or protect them,” said Emma Supple, podiatrist at Supplefeet in North London.

“We now have a whole generation who will run into huge health problems because of their footwear,” she was quoted as saying by ‘The Daily Mail’

Mike O’Neill, consultant podiatrist at the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, said, “Teenage girls in particular are storing up massive problems because the shoes they are wearing are often too flat and unsupportive.”

According to the experts, teenagers are particularly vulnerable because foot bones continue to grow through adolescence – the bones are still soft so can be forced into unnatural shapes, rather like foot-binding in ancient China.

This changes their gait, leading to problems all the way up their skeleton, such as knee, hip and back pain. And as this generation is likely to live longer than previous ones, that could mean decades of discomfort, they said.

They pointed out that popular shoes with flat and elasticised sides don’t offer enough support for the foot, causing stain in arches, ligaments and muscles.

As the body’s weight shifts, the abnormal loading of pressure can lead to cramping pain in the foot, they said.

And because the foot is unstable, problems can then develop in the muscles and bones of the foot and extend up the leg into the spine, explains Neil Nevitt, podiatry team leader at Liverpool Primary Care Trust.

Another problem is heel pain. “You need a bit of shock absorption in heels,” explains Mike O’Neill. “But many of these shoes are so flat that the heel is raised 5 mm at most. The heel, which strikes the ground first, also becomes damaged and painful.” Mike added.

50 + 0$ + New York = ghetto assuré ! Ahaha !

A 22h, le DJ nous crie “If you’re ready for 50 Cent make some noise right now”. Aller hop, ODB, Big Pun, 2Pac, Biggie, etc… Damn it. Il commence avec « I Run New York ». Mais c’était pas mal quand même, j’étais agréablement surprise, j’me suis même mise à bouger les pieds sur “Baby By Me” en fredonnant le refrain par cœur « Have a baby by me, baby, be a millionaire ».

Puis, petit moment clé : « Where’s my nigga at? » demande 50. Puis il enchaîne avec des vieux morceaux, “P.I.M.P” (Il troque sa casquette contre un chapeau de pimp), “This Is How We Do”, “Hate It Or Love It”, “Just A Lil Bit”, “Candy Shop”, “Magic Stick”.

En attendant, révise ton refrain “Have a baby by me baby, be a millionaire, have a baby by me…” Cheers !

When you hurt your arm, leg, or back, the first thing you’d often notice is that ones’ r

When you hurt your arm, leg, or back, the first thing you’d often notice is that ones’ range of motion tends to decrease. It hurts to move, or your muscles feel achy. Despite this pain previous medical research has no solid explanation for the fact that despite pain and obvious torn/ damaged muscles, individuals are still able to perform tasks with the same amounts of force as an individual who is not in pain. Researchers recently have hypothesised that individuals who are experiencing deep tissue pain, in fact recruit more muscles to help out the torn/ damaged muscle do its task. This might seem painfully obvious but it is not. Up until this point the current theory/ model of muscle recruitment during pain stated that muscle groups take from other limbs or major muscles to help get a task completed. Lets dive a bit further into this issue and I”ll attempt to lay it out nice and simple.

First off we need to understand what a functional motor unit is, in order to understand how this works. For the purpose of simplicity we will use the bicep as our model muscle in the following explanations. As you may know muscles have the ability to flex and relax. Simply put a muscle is in fact a bundle of fibers which each act independently to add to a larger whole. The reason you can flex your arm and wave vs. flex your arm to lift a weight is that the more labor, force your body needs , the more motor units are recruited to get the job done. The neat thing is these muscle fibers actually recruit in an orderly fashion from smaller to larger.

So what happens when you’ve torn a muscle or injured a limb? Say you need to get a task done but your injured. How do your muscles deal with this situation? Researchers set out to answer this exact question. They did this by getting a patient pool of volunteers who let them inject 5% saline solution into the subcutaneous fat of their forearms and their triceps. These researchers then looked at the electrical levels of the neurons that innervate each functional motor unit and took recordings from these while their patients were asked to perform tasks with a given force. These neurons that innervate each motor unit, control the muscles flexion and relaxation abilities. When a task is performed a certain electrical charge can be measured of each one and with some sophisticated software researchers can tell how many individual units exist and which ones in particular are being recruited.

Diagram of the quadricep muscle

When all was said and done they were astonished. What they found was that the current model of motor unit recruitment during pain was in fact wrong! As they predicted, muscle groups that were undergoing deep tissue pain in did in fact show the same electrical activity as normal muscles. They also were able to generate force just like a non injured muscle could. However, what they didn’t expect was that the muscles were actually recruiting in a different order than the normal recruitment order from smallest to largest. This basically means that when your injured your brain knows to switch which muscle unit it chooses to help you get a task done, rather than always recruiting them in the same pattern and order. This has huge implications for studies on pain and how the human body is able to cope with injury.

The motor unit as seen coming from the spine out to the muscle groups

Last Thursday evening my husband drove us to a nearby fitness center to sign us up. I was relieved to see “normal” people working out. You know, middle-aged out-of-shape people trying to stave off a heart-attack. There were no tan buff bodies trying to find a date. This was the perfect place for us! We signed up, got our membership number and we began our journey toward physical fitness.

We began with some cardio…I liked the elliptical for the smooth motion…not so hard on my body as jogging. Then we moved on to some bike riding and then the weights. I liked the weights. I liked feeling my muscles working in the areas that I know have been my problem areas: the areas that tend to make my neck unable to look up all the way or tilt from side-to-side. It was easy to identify which machines to use since they have nice little pictures on the sides showing which muscles it will work. I walked around identifying all the ones that will strengthen my shoulder and back since I know this is what my physical therapists would want and then for vanities sake, I found the machine that will help me defy gravity and lift my glutes! Well, I had to have some fun in there somewhere!

Now, for the strong coffee… Are we exercising our faith? Are we putting our faith to good use or allowing atrophy to take place? Are we reading our Bibles so we can strengthen our faith? Are we exercising our relationship with the Lord by praying? Are we encouraging others to exercise their spiritual muscles so their faith will be strong? If all we are concerned about is our physical bodies we will be poorly prepared for “the day of battle.” Our biceps and quads will not help us when what wrestle against is spiritual. Our faith needs to be worked out on the treadmill of life so we can endure and win the prize at the end of our race (Heb 12:1-3). Reaching toward that eternal prize is a worthy goal and when we become weary we need look toward it. Holding up the shield of faith works some serious muscles and is necessary to stop the fiery darts from hitting us. Wielding the sword of the Spirit takes training and precision…picture mighty warriors swinging a big heavy gleaming sword. Now replace the picture of Mel Gibson in Braveheart with you! You have to be that warrior swinging the sword, fighting off the enemy. Yes, you can. You won’t be fainthearted when you know you are prepared because you have been exercising your faith muscles.

1 Timothy 4: 7 Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly. 8 “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” 9 This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it.

You have heard me speak about training the body as a “whole” or a unit. Another way to put it is “MU

You have heard me speak about training the body as a “whole” or a unit. Another way to put it is “MUSCLE BALANCE” or the principle of opposition, which leads to muscle balance.

Here are some simple key points to keep in mind in working toward muscle balance:

- Exercise routines must be designed to develop this balance, it doesn’t happen by itself
- Muscle balance is developed by exercising “paired muscles”
- Paired muscles are muscles that have opposing functions and are found on opposite sides of the joint.

Example: If you want to stabilize the pelvic girdle, which provides the foundation for all other movements, the muscle on both sides of the pelvis (flexors and extensors) will have to be strengthened. An imbalance between the flexors and extensors is a common problem and is usually followed by what is known as “compensatory shift” in the joints above or below the hips. Such a shift may manifest as poor posture or not using the proper body mechanics. These deviations are just another way of your body adapting to the muscle imbalance of the muscles in the hip area.

Another simple example of paired muscles would be biceps (front of the upper arm) and triceps (back of the upper arm) or the quadriceps (front of the upper leg) and hamstrings (back of the upper leg).

- If you workout the biceps you will also need to give equal attention to the triceps to create balance in the muscles so there is even tension on both sides of the joint (elbow and shoulder).

- If you are working out the chest and front deltoids you will also need to exercise the opposing muscle in the upper back (rhomboids, trapezius [middle], and rear deltoids), or you will develop an uneven pull on your shoulders and create upper back and neck problems. The problems that develop in the upper back and neck are many times due to a muscle imbalance.

As you can see, muscle balance is a key component to fitness. This is why there is such an importance in having a personal trainer. Even people with years of experience in the gym and other forms of exercise need a personal trainer. I see it every day in the gym. People I know have been working-out for a long time come up to me and ask what they can do for various painful problems they are experiencing in their necks, upper back, shoulders or lower back and hips.

Understanding anatomy, body mechanics and the musculoskeletal system is a full time job.

My best advice for your fitness plan, “get professional help from a Personal Trainer”.

Keep moving the Wright Way, it only gets better!

Thanks, WW

Taylor Lautner, maybe a werewolf in the most popular vampire movie of the season but he is definitely the breakout star. His Hollywood hunk good looks that has been the biggest driving force eclipsing even the popular characters of the series Bella and Edward.

He plays Jacob Black, who is in love with Bella, but is in the tribe of werewolves . This makes for the compelling push and pull between the enmity that exist between the vampires and werewolves.

Interestingly enough, it has become a marketeer’s dream for the film, since Lautner’s fan base has grown and pitted him against the popular Robert Pattinson. This has made the feverish hunger for the opening of the movie “The Twilight Saga New Moon“ even more epic.

Lautner’s star is on the rise and, by all indications, is going to surpass Pattinson who has not seemed as accessible to the fans.
