When I went to New York City in December, I was only there for a few days so I didn’t get an opportunity to check out all the museums I wanted. (One day…) But in this new multi-part series, here on My Kingdom, I’m going to discuss five museums in various cities. I’ll include all the museums I’ve visited (it’s a short list) and all the museums I would like to visit.

I would totally love to see this, The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Anyone who enjoys watching fashion shows on TV or flipping through glossy-page fashion magazines knows that fashion is just another art form, just like painting or sculpture. COOPER-HEWITT NATIONAL DESIGN MUSEUM

Again, another artsy-fartsy museum. But that’s me. But what better place to envelop yourself in culture than New York? Anyway, Cooper-Hewitt is the only museum in the US whose collection is solely focused on contemporary and historic design (or so Wikipedia tells me). It includes exhibitions art, fashion, design, graphic design, prints, textiles and more. (Sounds look a pretty good place to get inspired!)

One of my very favorite things in NYC is the architecture. (Check out some of my NYC trip photos.) I definitely want to check this bad boy out when I go back to NYC… whenever that may be… This museum features exhibits on skyscrapers and architecture from New York and from around the world. The current exhibition is “China Prophency: Shanghai“. See some impressive models (some larger than others) and city architecture photos (some older than others).

MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE

The Museum of the Moving Image is focused on the preservation of history related to film. One of their current exhibitions is “Behind The Screen” which discusses the many jobs and duties involved with filmmaking process (producing, marketing, etc). “The Museum maintains the nation’s largest and most comprehensive collection of artifacts relating to the art, history, and technology of the moving image— one of the most important collections of its kind in the world. Begun at the Museum’s inception in 1981, today the collection numbers approximately 125,000 artifacts.” Unfortunately, it isn’t located in Manhattan. Instead, it can be found in Astoria in Queens.

MUSEUM OF SEX

This is the only museum I made it to in New York- and yes, I did find it interesting and enjoyable. (The most enjoyable part? Seeing one particular friend squirm with embarrassment.) The Museum of Sex takes you through a timeline of the evolution of sex. See how pornographic films started, see snippits of celebrity sex tapes and mechanical contraptions that people have built for “their own amusement.” As a Bettie Page fan, I enjoyed the exhibit on the evolution of pin-up art and films. With their current exhibit, “The Sex Lives of Animals“, the museum takes all the sexual stuff you avoid watching on the Discovery Channel and blows it up big for all to see. It’s not a huge place though and definitely not family-friendly. The gift shop is pretty fun, too.

And, upon, finishing this article, I desperately want to go back to New York City. But not in the winter. Not around New Year’s or Christmas. I want to stay longer and I want to stay in a hotel in New York- not New Jersey!

So are you a winner? Were you there last night? Did you have fun??

According to the old adage referring to books and their covers, things aren’t always what they seem.  And from the bewildered looks of the patrons inside the Museum of Sex (233 Fifth Avenue @ 27th Street, 212.689.6337, $3 off coupon available until Saturday, 5.6.09), undoubtedly expecting lascivious displays of sex acts and nudity suggested by the Museum’s name, a lot of judging had already been taking place.

The Museum of Sex (MoSex), founded in 2002, seeks to promote an open discourse on sex and sexuality, disposing of conventional, traditional and the status quo perceptions of sex, gender and sexuality. The museum occupies a unique position in the intersection between academia and pop culture, with exhibitions that have encompassed the realms  film, science, and history, among others.

I’m inherently attracted to things that appear to be one thing, and then turn out to be something else entirely.  Most often, they’re something wonderful.  I first went to the Museum of Sex three years ago with my then boyfriend, tense with the anticipation of not knowing what to expect.  Now I was back, past knowledge in hand, to see the Museum’s two newest exhibits:  ”The Sex Lives of Animals” and “Action:  Sex and the Moving Image.”

“The Sex Lives of Animals” attempts to challenge society’s perceptions of human sexuality by exploring sexuality in the natural world.  The exhibit is highly scientific and academic, but is presented in a very “user friendly” way.  That is to say, that it is in no way boring, dull, or dry.  The exhibit catches your attention from the beginning, and doesn’t let go until the very end.  The exhibit reviews multiple relevant categories, such as sexual selection, sexual cannibalism, and homosexuality in nature.  

 My favorite part of the exhibit is located on the homosexuality wall, and is the story of Roy, Silo and Tango, the story of two male chinstrap penguins (Roy and Silo) who hatched and raised a female penguin chick (Tango) at the Central Park Zoo (Roy and Silo eventually separated.  Silo was in a monogamous relationship with a female penguin, but is now currently single.  Tango is in a lesbian relationship with another female penguin.)

The “Sex and the Moving Image Exhibit” seeks to trace the historical, sociological, and political reasons for the representation of sex on screen in various ways over time.  The exhibit starts with the first moving films through to the present day celebrity sex video tapes.  I had to elbow my way through the exhibit, as it was noticeably more crowded than the “Sex Lives of the Animals” exhibit.   One can only guess that this was due to the actual pornography playing on some of the screens over to the far left (maybe you can judge a book by its last chapter).

Another thing — the first thing I noticed when I walked into the building is that the staff (all men from what I could see that day) that work at MoSex are incredibly good looking.  At first I wasn’t going to mention this because I figured it had nothing to do with the museum itself.  Then I realized… it has everything to do with the museum.

I am off gallivanting in NYC this week, hence my recent silence on the blog. I saw something at the museum of sex the other day that was just wonderfully dorky. Artist Michael Sullivan has created an awesomely creepy stop motion animation called The Sex Life of Robots. It is reminiscent of Svankmeyer or The Brothers Quay. There is also a short interview with him. Interestingly enough, according to Wired, youtube decided that his video was definitely NSFW, and booted it off. It seems like there are a few clips out there, still, and Wired was kind enough to repost it for the rest of us. Here are some stills from the movie plus explanations of his process and some great artist comments. Check it out.

Sex, gender, pleasure, pain, anatomy, relationships- these we all relate to, we all have awareness of,  and we all have opinions on. Therefore, in 2002 when NYC opened the first museum dedicated completely to sex, the response was that of intrigue and fascination, winning awards for the opening exhibit, NYCSex.  Since then the museum has generated over 12 exhibits and has proven to be an incredibly unique institution completely dedicated to exploring the history, significance, and evolution of sexuality.

From interpretations of the human body to sex education, photography to technology the museum covers a wide array of works, including pieces by Pablo Picasso and Keith Haring.  The Museum of Sex is definitely not your “typical” museum but its worth a visit.

Wonderland Fashion Week Display

This past Thursday, New York Fashion Week introduced emerging designer, Michelle Scott and her Fall 2009 collection Wonderland. Michelle Scott aka DJ ChelleBomb introduced her first dance wear  meets nightlife collection at the most appropriate place for the clothing-line, the Museum of Sex.

Michelle’s collection was definitely SEXY and eye catching. Being away from the usual Bryant Park tents allowed for creativity as the models displayed Scott’s fashions by walking through the second floor rooms – cutting through the mingling crowd and all. The show was conducted in what was to me an unexpected manner, but all the men in the room were very atoned to the models and their ensembles.

The Museum of Sex, which I have been wanting to visit for some time now, is a very interesting place. The first floor covers the sex life of animals and the  second floor covers topics  and historical points of the human sex life.

The Wonderland after party took event guests uptown to the Empire Hotel Rooftop. Although it was a bitterly cold night, there was a good show of party people. From the Wonderland party we headed to the M2 Lounge (formerly known as Mansion) to continue the Fashion Week festivities.

the second floor of the museum of sex is hosting an exhibit entitled ‘action! sex and the moving-image’ which traces the development of sex in film. spanning over a hundred years, sex in the moving-image underwent a variety of transformations mediated by regulatory codes and laws at different points in history.

the room of ‘action!’ was illuminated with a dark blue. tiny television screens adorned a wall in the room’s center and the surface of raised blocks functioned as screens for other video clips. the visibility and audibility of films with adult content and porn queered this curatorial space by rendering indistinguishable the public and private. brianne and i navigated this perverse space by viewing close-ups of blowjobs, anal sex, and the like with complete strangers. we strangely felt discomfort and allure at the same time and as the same sensation, in the time and space we shared with others. this queer intimacy in which not a word circulated amongst strangers while erotic sensations did brought together normally and normatively private matters into public spaces while leaving each experience irreducibly singular. a heterotopia to the dominant society of sexual control, ‘action!’ thus enacts a politics of sexual aesthetics reconfiguring the proper place of sex and the curatorial to queer the traffic of bodies walking through and stopping still in a proximity too close for comfort yet too far for commonality.

brianne and i happened upon a fascinating section of the museum of sex’s animal sex exhibit: ‘panda porn.’ because male pandas in captivity are unexposed to sexual activity and the fertility period of a panda lasts a mere three days, captors stage disciplinary interventions.

if we consider the body not as preformed material but, a la judith butler, a performed effect, then it becomes clear that the aim of this coercive viewing is not to simply act upon an already-formed panda-subject, but rather, attempts to constitute the panda as a sexual subject. eerily reminiscent of but implementing the obverse of disciplinary viewings within stanley kubrick’s rendition of ‘a clockwork orange,’ the coerced viewing of panda porn aims at forming the body of the male panda, the panda-as-sex.

the gaze enacted by what is viewed, then, summons forth a particular subject from a series of mobile performative forces. if the mode of address effects this act of interpellation, then perhaps we cannot only say that the screen is viewed by the panda; rather, the screen views the panda, views it into existence.

it becomes crucial, then, to consider the homologies between the captivity and formation of panda-subjects and the disciplinary structures of carceral arrangements producing prisoner-subjects.

we may also reflect upon the locus of carcerality itself: in what sense is society at large a prison? where and when are carceral qualities and their disciplinary effects ejaculated over the whole of the social?
