Well, I’ve been busy this week, but I think I may have finally gotten over the post-traumatic stress disorder enough to write about last weekend.

Before I get started, I have to say that this was my first big convention. And I had a blast. That in mind. . .

To all my fans, it was wonderful to meet you all. I had no idea this blog was so popular. But I do have one request next time: please, do not all mob me at once. I am not exactly a people person, you know? And my hair does not make nearly as good a souvenir as you might think. I will have bodyguards next year, but all the same, I’d really appreciate some courtesy.

Now that that unpleasantness is out of the way, some really awesome stuff happened:

I got to meet a bunch of voice actors, including Travis Willingham and Brad Swaile. I’m a pretty brave person, but even I got really nervous when I actually got up to the front of the autograph line. Fortunately, everyone there was very nice. Travis even posed with some Ginko fanart I drew for him:

Travis attempting the Ginko smirk with a sharpie cigarette.

In other news, my group and I did a lot of great cosplay, including the Howl’s Moving Castle cosplay I mentioned before the con. I think we were just about the right blend for it.

HMC Cosplay: Howl, Sophie(me), Calcifer, Markl, and Turniphead

Cute picture of Sophie and Howl in character.

I also met a lot of really awesome people at the con, like the sisters I was in line with (who got my autograph), the crazy girl in my hall who realigned my spine for me during a hall party, and the girl I bought a Ramane for because she ran out of money. And don’t even get me started on all my friends from high school who helped me get into panels (thanks again, guys) because they were working as NMACon sponsors.

All in all, it was a great experience, and I can’t wait for my next con!

Mushishi is deeply complex at times, and often drifts into the realms of the incomprehensible. Set a

Mushishi is deeply complex at times, and often drifts into the realms of the incomprehensible. Set at the turn of the 20th century, it follows a young man by the name of Ginko, who travels all over Japan, studying Mushi. As far as I could tell, Mushi, rather than being plain old insects, are tiny creatures with some kind of magical force. They’re a necessary part of life, but they often have negative effects on humans. Perhaps it’s the film’s slow pace that doesn’t allow the usual rise and fall to occur that just didn’t gel right with me. The explanations of what the mushi are, or why they do what they do is left opaque and ill-defined, which I think should have been explained more thoroughly.

Fans of the franchise should find lots to like here as much of the material comes right out of the anime and manga. It’s a beautiful piece of work, roaming languidly through lush leafy forests, pale misty light, and deep woodland ponds fringed with trees. The beauty of most of it makes the horrific parts even darker and more ghastly. When I say horrific, I don’t want to imply this movie is for adults. The film only has slightly disturbing imagery though the film and does a wonderful job of steering clear of sexual situations, foul language, or glorification of gore to make it suitable for most viewers.

The tone of the film is surprisingly serious, with near-constant tension and mysteriousness. It requires a certain level of patience and willingness to sit back and allow the film to weave its story. The filmmakers decided to have made this for fan boys, and doesn’t dwell too long with the backstories or relationship details between characters. Films like this rely upon tension and release in its prose rather than endless action sequences or CG-induced visual overload.

Perhaps the picture’s greatest strength lies not in what’s seen but in what isn’t- as in dimly lit sets, misty mountainsides, and minimal-use of the computer-generated parasites all add up to a creepy undertone that works extremely well. Mushishi is worth a gander for those that like their movies to burn a little more casually than most. Mushishi is one of those films that you want to recommend but at the same time, it all depends on the viewer and if they are the type that can put their entire focus into the intricate details of the film for 131 minutes. To wrap things up here, granted, it was entertaining but unfortunately, the storyline may be too difficult for some viewers to comprehend.

Mehr geistige Ergüsse also.
-Mehr Zeit für T~S haben.
-An meinem Server werkeln(sehr viel Arbeit…).

Hayate no Gotoku… oh my gawd, DAT FUNNY!!~ Nein, eigentlich überhaupt nicht.

Moment Mal, “will”?

I wanted to share with you some beautiful animations I found while procrastinating rummaging through

I wanted to share with you some beautiful animations I found while procrastinating rummaging through youtube. Japan is famous for its unique animated motion picture, as well as its live-action ones, oozing in symbolism.

Among others, Kigeki (Comedy), is a short gothic fairtyale set during the War for Ireland’s Independance.

I bought this movie a few years ago. It never ceases to make me cry. Though not as infamous as Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon makes equally visually-amazing films.

Chiyoko Fujiwara was once a major movie star who dominated the Japanese cinema world. Thirty years ago, she abruptly disappeared from the screen and from public view. One of her greatest admirers, Genya Tachibana, is a documentary filmmaker who has traveled to the isolated mountain lodge where she makes her home to interview her. There, he presents her with an old key, and as if the key had opened a door to her memories, Chiyoko starts telling the story of her life, interweaving moments from her past and future and passing through the boundary between reality and the movies that had made up so much of her life.

Also, I caught this from a beautifully atmospheric and original series called Mushishi. It won a grand prize award for best art direction by Takashi Waki.

I’ll have to watch Ponyo and tell you about it soon. I adore Hayao Miyazaki’s wild and unexpected imagination!

Da flattern schon immer wieder kuriose Suchbegriffe rein:
“anime sex” – Der Klassiker.
“umineko butler liebe” – Oh nein. Der Weltuntergang, pardon, die Fangirls sind gekommen! Welches Yaoi-Pairing darf es denn diesmal sein? Kanon X Gohda? Oh Gott…
“hausaufgaben physik” – …

-11eyes
-Darker Than BLACK: Ryusei no Gemini
Ganz recht, kein Seitokai no Ichizon.

RL(Real Life) – oder EF(Epic Fail):

“to inform her about her presents”… so sollte es heißen.
“to infect her abuse her pressure”… so hieß es bei mir.

Religion… Thema: Was ist Religion?

Mein Liebling, Seitokai no Ichizon, war große Klasse!
Sie: “W-What is it?”
Er: “I love you.”
Sie fällt völlig übertrieben vom Stuhl, dann so: “How can you just say something like that?”
Er: “Because I’m serious.”
Sie: “USO DA!!”
(Zikaden-Zirpen im Hintergrund…)
Er: “I believe the current fade is Umineko, not Higurashi.”

Ich werde sicher nicht schlau sterben, was Kara no Kyoukai betrifft.

In the maligned episode 10 of Bakemonogatari, at about 7:57 in the episode, Mushishi fans can hear that familiar three chord descent on the piano, interweaved with a jazzy tune (Mushishi meets Brubeck’s Time Out), as they’re ascending the steps to the shrine once more.

Bakemonogatari 9 started and I thought I’d stumbled on a lost episode of Mushishi

I walked ten thousand miles, ten thousand miles to see you...

(sometimes that’s an animated gif of the opening few seconds of the episode, if not, here’s a link to something that might work better.)

This episode (the first of the Nadeko Snake arc) was a visual feast — from the bamboo as Araragi and Suruga climb to the shrine…

And every gasp of breath I grabbed at just to find you....

It’s a busy time (as hinted at by the frequency of posts), but there’s always time for Bakemonogatari. Shinbou visuals plus Nisioisin’s playful otaku-fest dialogue leads to some of the best anime in quite a while.

Update (8 Sep 2009): the jury is still out about this image:

Stylized beauty or crude collage?

I think the use of color and light here is wonderful. The composition of the image — the way the curve of the stairs and the light on the right draw your eye to the two figures (and the countless steps beyond them) is nicely done. But the bamboo are strips of litmus paper with chalk marks! This is okay stylishness on the left — where the bamboo ends are concealed in grass, but on the right, the bamboo just ends (though the glowing light distracted me in an artistic sleight of hand, so I didn’t notice it until it was pointed out to me). The color composition of this image really appeals to me, but I really wish I hadn’t noticed the bottoms of the bamboo on the right.

So another five reviews today – I am slowing getting them rewritten! Today I have; Noein, Kurozuka, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, Kure-nai and Jing The Bandit King.

Noein: Exciting, if sometimes mind-bending, Sci-fi series with a ton of action - 4/5

PLOT: Noein is a series that while it contains many clichéd elements, still manages to be highly original and memorable. It tackles complex ideas like the multiple-world theory and the fluidity of the future and wraps them up in a very accessible and human story. There is always the danger when dealing with sci-fi that its all going to get very talky and incomprehensible and the characters will get caught up techno-babble and end up feeling aloof and unapproachable – such is thankfully not the case in Noein. Even the scientist characters remain human and mostly likeable. The character development is superbly done – Noein has a large cast, but all are given adequate time and are fairly well rounded at the end. Haruka is a great heroine – very grounded and believable, and her friends in all their incarnations are also well developed. The only character I have issue with is Yuu – he’s such a whiney brat for most the time that by the time he actually stops his emo-ness and does something I just no longer cared about the character. His alternate future self, Karasu, on the other hand; is a wonderful and complex character and the central figure of most the action scenes in the series.
There is so much I’d like to ramble about as Noein provides great food for thought, but if I go on much longer this will turn into an essay rather than a review! So I’ll just say that Noein’s plot was great with lots of interesting ideas and a well developed world and likeable characters – it looses some marks for slightly odd pacing and an end that’s a touch too neat with a couple of plot-holes, but those are minor quibbles and don’t really much affect my overall enjoyment.

ANIMATION: Unorthodox and experimental, Noein makes for a unique visual experience. The character designs are definitely not the norm and the animation is almost messy in its execution. However this style works very well for the subject matter – the action scenes are jaw-dropping as the messy, sketchy style allows for a lot of freedom of movement. Its not pretty, but it is eye-catching. I have issues with the CGI though – a lot of it is poorly done and doesn’t mesh with the other animation at all, the only place this actually works well is with the Shangri-La things as it enhances the feeling that these objects really are from a different time-space. Plenty of recycled animation too, notably shots of Haruka’s house and her activation of the Dragon Torque. The animation quality is also very inconsistent; at times it’s striking, detailed and has lots of movement and at others its completely bland, static and the characters look deformed! Still I appreciate that Noein offers something different and quite visually striking.

MUSIC & VOICE ACTING: The score is excellent – all the BGM is wonderful and has lots of variety. It’s a really rich soundscape. The OP was pretty and I didn’t skip it all that much, the ED was quite forgettable though. Voice acting was excellent – Karasu, Haruka and Atori stand out in my mind as particularly well acted as these are the characters that have the biggest range of expression over the run of the series. However as a whole the cast is wonderful.

So all in all Noein is one of the better and more original sci-fi anime I’ve seen, I’d definitely recommend it.

Kurozuka: Exciting, stylish, with an excellent soundtrack but lacks depth – 4/5
PLOT: Kurozuka is a show where the from the 1st episode I was completely drawn into the intrigue of the plot. The whole look and sound of the show gave me Death Note vibes. I think the same team from Madhouse who produced Death Note worked on Kurozuka as the animation employs a similar style. Kurozuka was the standout action series of its season, but it has much more to offer than that, it also offers an engaging, mysterious (although sometimes confusing) plotline. Of course I would have liked some proper answers regarding Kuro & Kuromitsu, but since the show is told from Kuro’s POV we never get more answers than he does and I’ve drawn my own conclusions about what exactly was going on. The time skipping and repeating cycles that occur throughout (and without warning) I found very interesting, as each repetition shed new light on the mystery of Kuro & Kuromitsu. The series is short at 12 episodes, but thanks to this there is rarely a dull moment as every last minute is put to good use.

ANIMATION: Dialogue is at a minimum in this series so the rich visuals, heavy with deep reds and a brilliant soundtrack are what set the atmosphere for the viewer. Over all the animation is stunning as one would expect from MADHOUSE – lots of strong colouring (especially during the fight sequences where Kuro really flips out!), heaps of blood, really slick choreography, interesting (if overly thin) character designs and fantastic attention to detail in the backgrounds – very visually striking anime.

VOICE ACTING & MUSIC: The soundtrack is fantastic – best OP I’ve heard in a while and a nice ED too – BGM is also very impressive and atmospheric. The seiyuu are pretty impressive too (woo Mamoru Miyano!), although there really isn’t a whole lot of dialogue in this show.

In spite of its flaws Kurozuka remains an extremely attractive show, I mean its got blood, gore, action, romance, immortality, swords and Mamoru Miyano! Whats not to like!? Recommended if you like your action series mature, blood-soaked and stylish.

Gankutsuou – The Count of Monte Cristo: Excellent and visually striking novel adaptation – 5/5

PLOT: Basically its The Count of Monte Cristo in space/the future ^_^ Its been many years since I read the original Count of Monte Cristo novel so my memory of the finer details of the plot is a bit fuzzy, but Gonzo have managed quite a good adaptation of the plot IMO. The characters are rich, there is plenty of character development and the story has a multitude of layers – all is good here. The Count is a fascinating character, you can’t help but be drawn into his world and story. Gankutsuou demonstrated brilliant pacing and wonderful scripting – never a dull moment! Definitely one of GONZO’s best series.

ANIMATION: Such a striking style is used in this anime, an abundance of static patterns is used to detail character clothing, hair and important background details. It’s a visually memorable style that makes this anime stand out extremely well. The only other anime I can think of with a remotely similar visual motif is Mononoke. The character designs may be drawn from Gonzo’s generic stock, but the detailing makes them fit their setting well and makes them quite eyecatching.

MUSIC & VOICE ACTING: The score is wonderful – beautiful piano pieces and a nice ballad OP. I particularly liked the ED, the way its presented with the visuals makes it feel like a particularly well edited AMV! The voice acting is of a high standard too – it has Jun Fukuyama (which pleased my Inner Fangirl quite a lot). The Count’s voice was melty too!

Overall a very well put together anime adaptation of a classic novel and highly recommended to anyone looking for a series with a well constructed and engaging plot.

Kure-nai: Quirky, quite slow but very character driven, with some excellent action scenes – 4/5

PLOT: This show really surprised me when I watched it – judging from promo material and summaries, I thought it would either be more comedic & harem-y or dark and action orientated. What I got was quirky slice of life with the odd dark undertone! The pacing is slowish and it takes its time with getting to the meat of the plot – rather we are given a very character driven anime, and the characters are what make it worth watching for me, Shinkuro and Murasaki are a joy to watch and are given a lot of depth over the run of the show. In addition Kure-nai has a stunning action packed finale (you’ve got to see the car chase through the traditional mansion!), which really topped the series off for me. Oh and there is a hilarious musical episode – you have to see (and hear) that!

ANIMATION: 1st off – what a demented opening! It’s really cute and colourful, which is quite jarring as the tone of series isn’t really all that light! Brains Base were behind the animation, and they employ a similar style to that used in Red Garden. The backgrounds are very detailed and the animation is fluid – the character designs needed a bit getting used to but were well thought out. However overall the animation quality is high throughout and especially shines during the handful of well-choreographed and exciting action scenes.

MUSIC & VOICE ACTING: The music is great and really fitting throughout (well except for that slightly out of place OP and that hilarious musical episode). The one thing that bugged me about this series is the main character, Shinkuro Kurenai’s VA – he sounds much too girly & young (Miyuki Sawashiro also voiced Claire in Red Garden, Shinku in Rozen Maiden & Jun in Persona: Trinity Soul). It was something I struggled with throughout, but it isn’t all that annoying as everyone else in the cast is excellent and well cast.

Overall I really liked Kure-nai and felt it was one of the best new offerings in its season and the show really didn’t get enough love when it was airing.

Jing The Bandit King: Quite average series, but does have a nice sense of style – 3/5

PLOT: Well basically you have Jing and his bird friend/ super powered gun thing, Kir and the two of them travel all over their world looking for stuff that interests Jing to steal, oh and Jing always picks up a girl in each arc (Wiki calls them the ‘Jing Girls‘!). Not the most original plotline in the world, and the series is pretty standard shounen fare – but its still pretty well executed. The structure of the series is unrelated stand-alone episodes or short mini arcs and in that sense it reminds me of Kino no Tabi or Mushishi (although not in the same league as either of those series!). Jing himself is quite laid back and likeable, Kir on the other hand is a lech and fairly annoying.

ANIMATION: The series is pretty well animated, although the 1st thought that went through my head when I saw Jing was “wow the spikes in his hair could put someone’s eye out!) There is plenty of striking colour, the backgrounds are interesting and the action is well done – no real complaints about production quality here.

MUSIC & VOICE ACTING: For some reason the downloads I got lack the opening and endings, but I did watch the opening on YouTube and thought that it was OK – not overly memorable. The music during the episodes reminded me of Tokyo Underground, but it seemed to fit well enough. The voice acting is excellent – it bugged me at first that Jing has the same seiyuu as Kohsaka (Genshiken), Wolfram (Kyo Kara Maoh) & Kei (Moyashimon) as I watched all three of those series not long before watching Jing, but got over that quickly. The always great Shinichiro Miki plays the motorbike courier Postino & Kir ’s VA is also very good.

Over all I’m pleasantly surprised with this series as I didnt have high expectations for it, but its still quite average and I have no desire to watch the OVA series.

Yes I still have more in my backlog – god knows when I’ll be through!

Well now that my Harry Potter ranting is out of the way – back to our normal programming! I have another five reviews to stick up today……Project ICE, Eureka Seven, Voices of a Distant Star, Mushishi and Narutaru.

Project ICE: Pretentious and extremely confusing – 2/5

PLOT: Oh were to start! I have absolutely no idea what this mess was about – something about a future world where all the men have died out for some unexplained reason (although they do go on at length about how it was all their own fault!), and were the surviving women have split into two factions – those who have turned to science to find a way to repopulate the earth, and those who have given up and just want to live the rest of their lives in peace and happiness. For some reason there is a fully functioning military, even though the women keep waxing lyrical about how killing and violence is wrong and male! So anyway that’s the setting, but then you have the random yuri star-crossed lovers thing (that gets next to no development), the whole ICE thing (I wont even attempt to explain that), a random interlude where birds turn into flowers and back into birds again…….and then the scene were they killed a baby :S…..Its all very disjointed and completely random – the characters have no depth and I don’t even know what the whole end was about (was it a dream? another world? I sure as heck don’t know!). So yeah, not much to love about the ‘plot’.

ANIMATION: The animation is actually fairly decent, or it I would have said so if this was a 90s OVA. However ICE was made in 2007. Yeah. Could someone explain the extremely dated character designs and costume designs to me!? The whole thing seems to be stuck in a timewarp! I did like the set designs though ^_^

MUSIC & VOICE ACTING: Didn’t notice the music much. The voice acting is a very mixed bag, some of the seiyuu are good, most are rubbish. The one that threw me most though was Akira Ishida voicing Julia…….yes Athrun Zala / Gaara voicing a tall blonde woman; very weird.

All in all a pretty poor OVA, full of pretentious dialogue and a very confusing plot – avoid.

Eureka Seven: Exciting concept, wonderful character development and awesome soundtrack – a well deserved 5/5!

PLOT: This series was an absolute joy to watch! Extremely well put together with a multi-layered plot, memorable characters and inspired pacing – every episode was used well and contributed something to the entertainment value of Eureka Seven. The concept and Studio was what attracted me to this series, and it really did not disappoint. I like mecha series in general and of course Eureka Seven contains many of the standard cliché’s of mecha anime, yet somehow this series made everything feel fresh and new. Turning the sky into an ocean and using so many familiar concepts in new ways was exciting and made for very enjoyable viewing – of course it helped that the characters where so very likeable! The amount of character development in this series was just wonderful – there are lots of characters but they were all given their moment to shine, none are superfluvious and everyone has something to contribute to the plot by the end.

Eureka Seven has two clearly defined parts to it – the 1st season is mostly concerned with setting up the world, characters and making sure the viewer is comfortable with all the terminology, the 2nd season is where the main plot comes into play (and its epic) building to a thrilling finale and a satisfying conclusion. Its difficult to fault anything really – the plot twists are well timed and I didn’t see a number of them coming (which was nice for a change!). The series has a clear message about growing up, finding your place in world and love; yet it doesn’t shove its message down your throat, instead letting the viewer form their own opinions. In short Eureka Seven completely draws you into Renton and Eureka’s adventure on board the Nirvash and Gekko-Go and I was quite sad to see the journey end – but it was an excellent ride!

ANIMATION: Fabulous production values throughout the run of this series – quite an accomplishment given its 50-episode length! BONES are one of my favourite studios as they consistently produce wonderfully animated shows – this is no exception. The LFO fights are dazzling – having the mecha surf in the sky was an inspired decision as it makes for jawdropping action scenes. Everything is fluid and there is minimal recycling of footage. The mecha designs themselves are striking and had plenty of movement. The character designs were also excellent – all the characters are very well planned and visually memorable with lots of expression. I can’t really fault anything about the visuals of this series!

MUSIC & VOICE ACTING: I adored the soundtrack. All of the OPs and EDs are great and the background music is an exciting mix of orchestral pieces and electro beats – I am so downloading it! Voice acting was excellent throughout – every character was well cast, it’s quite difficult to pick out characters, as everyone seemed to be giving there all in this show.

So all in all an excellent series, and one I’d highly recommend to all! A superior mecha series with a good balance of comedy, drama and romance – I’d urge you all to watch it!

Voices of a Distant Star: Compelling and beautifully animated it gets 4.5/5

PLOT: Dealing with a young couple that are separated by time and space, Shinkai somehow manages to make this short movie incredibly multi-layered and gripping! The storyline is remarkably well thought out and well paced. Each second of the 25 minutes is used well and there is adequate time given to action as well as quiet introspection. His portrayal of Mikako as a young girl thrust into the battle against an alien threat is excellent, and the characterisation of Noboru as the boyfriend she leaves behind is also wonderful. This short manages to perfectly capture the feelings of these two people as ever-increasing amounts of time and space separate them. It really is a wonderfully put together plot. The only complaint I have is that I wanted more – the alien threat could have been better developed and a more solid ending would have been nice too, but on the whole I was very impressed with Voices of a Distant Star.

ANIMATION: Wow. It’s hard to believe that this was the sole work of Makoto Shinkai and his computer. The animation is nothing short of beautiful – the skyscapes and landscapes are just gorgeous with wonderful use of colour. The character designs aren’t the best I’ve ever seen, but they are consistent throughout. The action scenes and use of CGI is also inspired – this short is truly a triumph of independent animation!

MUSIC & VOICE ACTING: The version I watched was the one were Shinkai and his fiancée provided the voice work and it was pretty well done for amateurs! The music is simple and understated, playing its role well.

Overall Voices of a Distant Star is simply one of the best short movies I’ve ever seen – its truly remarkable how so much plot and emotion these 25 minutes contain!

Mushishi: Episodic, intriguing and extremely well produced – 5/5

PLOT: Mushishi is 26 episodes long and its completely episodic, consisting of numerous mini arcs covering the various mushi and how they affect different people. The link between each arc is Ginko, the titular mushishi (an expert on mushi), who travels throughout medieval Japan plying his trade. To me the most interesting thing about Mushishi is the fact that both mushi and humans are shown in shades of gray – neither is inherently good or evil, they are simply doing what they can to survive. There are some quite sinister mushi covered over the course of the series and I found those arcs to be the most memorable due to the disturbing nature of them. There aren’t always happy endings for the humans who come into contact with the mushi – death or disfigurement is fairly common. Ginko for his part respects the mushi’s right to life and wont always help out the humans affected by the mushi if it will result in the mushi’s death, and I really liked this aspect of the series. Ginko is a truly intriguing character – he’s an anomaly within the series appearing to come from a different time period with his clothing and constant smoking, and his attitude towards both humans and mushi is that of live and let live.

ANIMATION: Now I had heard of Artland before, they’re quite a small studio, but by a mile Mushishi is their best anime IMO. The backgrounds are simply gorgeous; the attention to detail and variety of the landscapes is wonderful. I also loved the simplistic character designs and the varied designs for the mushi themselves. It’s an attractive anime.

MUSIC & VOICE ACTING: The OP is in english and its a very calming number. The BGM is quite atmospheric and really fits the tone of the series well – I wouldn’t listen to it without the visuals though, its definitely more mood setting than stand alone pieces of music. Ginko is main character and he’s voiced by a fairly new seiyuu called Yuto Nakano who does an excellent job. The supporting cast is also great even though most only are about for one or two episodes.

Overall Mushishi is a very atmospheric and fairly slow paced anime. The show that is most similar to it is Kino no Tabi as both have that episodic nature with some quite disturbing episodes, Mononoke also has similar themes. I’d highly recommend this series to anyone who liked Kino or Mononoke.

Narutaru: Disturbing, slow and just plain wrong in places – 2/5

PLOT: At 1st glance you would think this is a rather fun kids show about children with brightly coloured creatures in the style of Pokemon or Digimon. But dear god would you be wrong! This series takes all the elements of the typical Mon show and turns it on its head, throwing the young characters into harrowing situations and bringing the darkest elements of the human soul to the forefront. It can be extremely uncomfortable to watch. However I would probably have liked the series if it did this but also had a good action packed plotline – sadly no such luck. Narutaru is S-L-O-W and even though its only 13 episodes long it feels oh so much longer. To add insult to injury all the action seems to happen in the 1st couple of eps and the last few and nothing is really resolved at the end – I still don’t really know what the Dragonets are, why they were important or what the whole point was………and I hated Shiina! So all that really sticks out in my mind when I think of Narutaru is the slowness, irritating heroine and a few extremely disturbing scenes that I don’t think I’ll ever forget!

ANIMATION: The animation is very simplistic – a little too simplistic for my liking really. Wasn’t overly fussed on the character designs or the Dragonet designs and the backgrounds were mostly dull and recycled quite a bit. Clearly Narutaru didn’t have much of a budget.

MUSIC & VOICE ACTING: I remember disliking the OP as its cheery nature was very jarring given the content of the episodes. Can’t remember much of the BGM or ED. Voice acting was OK but nothing remarkable.

All in all a series that I always remember as awful, its been difficult to review it as I just remember not liking it and forcing myself to finish it!

Ok thats another five down – still have plenty more to go though! May post another batch this evening – shall see how many releases there are today.

I like Mushishi.

Mushishi

Volume 7: RS | MF | MU

Later than I planned. At this moment I already wanted to be sleeping, I’ll have to get up early tomorrow for work…

Editing the speech bubbles, I often went the “easy” way. I just used the clone tool. Perfectly cleaning the bubbles would have taken too long. So it’s still gray, but readable.

Anyway, these last days I had like a “Pride and Prejudice” marathon. Yesterday I finished the book, actually the first book I read on my Kindle, then watched the 2005 movie and today I listend to the audiobook of the parody, “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.” It was the second time I watched the movie and loved it at first, but now, comparing it to the book, it’s pretty lame. Everything happend so fast…but “[...] and Zombies” was pretty good.

Next will be Hitohira, because I already scanned it and have it on my computer, just have to edit the speech bubbles.

Oh yeah, I have said it already, but next Mushishi will be out in February, so just hope that J.A.C. will finish or continue till then or even some other group…

Enjoy
