We’ve been living.  A lot of people say that their favorite time of year is spring because everything is beginning or fall because everything is going to sleep or winter (I can’t imagine why winter would be a favorite season so I don’t have a reason to go with it!).  Mine is summer.  Everything is alive and thriving.  It is hot and you can smell dirt in the air when it is dry and rain in the air when it is wet.  All the baby animals that were born in the spring are learning to be cows and horses and goats and chickens instead of calves and ponies and kids and chicks.  And the flowers…I love the flowers.  They are all so unique and vivid and you can see a miracle right in your own back (or front) yard…Summer brings yellow cucumbers, purple tomatoes, pole beans, potatoes,okra, and in our case this year, my lovin’ husband grew some white cucumbers.  See them down there?  They do have a green tint, but the ones that grow up under all of the foliage are almost pure white and they are seldom bitter even in this heat.  Summer brings smiles and fun and jokes and taking walks through the garden.  We go to festivals and play music – we sit on the porch and play music.  The kids that we teach grow and change and the adults that we teach seem to relax a little, too.

Sometimes I think that I feel the sunshine pulsing through my veins.  So, smile today when the sun shines on you and let the world know that happiness is good.

Pitchfork reported this morning that the darling Mr. Bird will be touring with St. Vincent, including a stop in Charleston on October 12 at the Music Farm. I’ve only listened to him casually but he is such a cute little man and we played him quite a few times on Poolside Chatter last year. I haven’t listened to St. Vincent much either but I hear good things. and I’ve got until October to research. and I’m also just happy that the Music Farm booked someone who isn’t a tribute band.

Mentre manca poco al grande concerto che si svolgerà all’Idroscalo di Milano che vedrà protagoniste Katy Perry insieme a Dolcenera, proprio quest’ultima ha voluto ricordare la sua esperienza al reality show “Music Farm“, andato in onda su Rai Due per tre edizioni.

Emanuela Trane, in arte Dolcenera, al mensile “Cosmopolitan” sull’esperienza vissuta a “Music Farm” (che poi ha vinto) ha dichiarato: “Mi ha permesso di farmi conoscere come musicista, non solo come cantante. Però stare 24 ore su 24 davanti alle telecamere mi ha messo in difficoltà: non sono una spavalda, tendo a tenermi tutto dentro, magari lo butto fuori con le canzoni, ma fare la protagonista mi ha messo in crisi. Per due anni non ho fatto altro che lavorare, lavorare, lavorare. Andavo avanti solo per istinto, senza fermarmi a riflettere”.

Poi, grazie a quell’esperienza, ha ritrovato se stessa cambiandosi di look: “Mi sono guardata allo specchio e ho capito che quello che si vedeva fuori non corrispondeva a come mi sentivo dentro. La mia parte solare non usciva quasi mai, era mascherata”.Intanto, dopo il successo di “Il mio amore unico”, è uscito il secondo singolo tratto dall’album “Dolcenera nel mondo delle meraviglie“. Il nuovo singolo si intitola “La canzone d’amore più bella che c’è” di cui sotto vi proprioniamo il video.

When I Drink – The Avett Brothers – The Music Farm

Nella primavera del 2006, al termine della terza ed ultima edizione di “Music farm”, sfruttandone lo stesso gruppo autoriale e la medesima scenografia, venne realizzata, una serata speciale dal titolo “Music star”.

MUSIC STAR
Nella serata condotta da Simona Ventura, 8 vip in coppia con 8 cantanti professionisti, devono esibirsi nell’interpretazione di un brano musicale. Il programma, riprende a grandi linee l’impianto base dello show “Ballando con le stelle”. Durante la settimana precedente, infatti, sotto l’occhio attento delle telecamere, “maestri” e “allievi”, si sono preparati in sala prove. Tra le performance della puntata, si ricordano quelle di Franco Califano con Nina Moric, Tiberio Timperi con Silvia Mezzanotte, Loredana Bertè con Walter Nudo, Max Tortora con Alberto Fortis e Riccardo Fogli con Roberta Lanfranchi. A vincere meritatamente la serata, sarà proprio quest’ultima coppia.

La serata, indubbiamente ispirata ai grandi successi di “Ballando con le stelle” e “Notti sul ghiaccio”, non riesce a ottenere grossi consensi di pubbliico.Del resto, il ballo e il pattinaggio, ben si prestano alla spettacolarizzazione televisiva, a differenza del canto e della recitazione (vedi il flop di “Commedy club” su italia 1) che al contrario, rendono molto meno dal punto di vista dell’esibizione.

Bear Rinehart, front man for Needtobreathe, is undoubtedly one of the most intense performers I’ve ever seen in a live show. I’ve never seen him perform when he didn’t give 100% to what he was doing. It’s obvious he’s passionate about his music, and he really lights up a stage with the kind of conviction that comes from deep inside. I can’t remember what processing I did to get this image, but I’m pretty sure it was a series of pre-sets in Adobe Lightroom. I feel like this image really isolates a moment of raw power the way only Bear can deliver it.

Tuesday night I had the pleasure of interviewing Green River Ordinance just before their show at the Music Farm in Charleston. I also show the show, and shooting shows is one of the great joys of my life. These guys are working very hard to build a fanbase outside of their native Texas. They didn’t draw a big crowd Tuesday night (they were supposed to be the opening band that night but the headliners had to cancel) but they put on a great show. I think this image reflects both the sparse crowd and the energy created from the stage.

Last Saturday night, I (Valerie) attended the last show of Jay Clifford’s recent tour, here in Charleston at the good ol’ Music Farm!

The only thing was…the concert didn’t allow ANYONE in with cameras (and my giant Canon 5D isn’t exactly easily hidden in a pocket!) But no worries, Jay knows me and made a special request that I be made an exception to do photography for the band!

Owen Beverly opened the show…and was fabulous, as always. I’ve been following Owen’s career since, eeh, about 2001 I think? He’s just got an amazing voice! The 2nd opening band was Crowfield. Crowfield is seriously one of this area’s newest up and coming bands. They rock it out up there and are really talented!  This was my 2nd time seeing them perform. (I saw them back in June when they opened for Will Hoge at the Windjammer.) They were great then too, so I was super excited to get to hear them rock again! At the very  end, Jay did something really amazing…he came into the audience and sang Cathedrals! There were a lot of tears in the audience. It really was special.

Jay rocks, even without a microphone! I felt really honored to be the one to get to capture this moment!

Well, not yet. But the guys in Woodwork Roadshow are good enough they ought to be getting heard from coast to coast. Their blend of bluegrass, folk, ragtime, country, and rock is energetic, eclectic, and electrifying despite their mostly acoustic lineup.

I’ve written about them already this year for the Columbia Free Times, so I won’t say much more here except that somebody just posted some very good quality live clips from a recent show at the Music Farm in Charleston. Here’s one of them, for the song “Coast To Coast”:

E’ finalmente tutto pronto compreso il cast che fino a qualche giorno fà sembrava ancora alla deriva.

Giovedì 9 Ottobre la prima puntata che vedrà come protagonisti i 12 concorrenti di questa “Talpa 3″ (in altro il video di presentazione a “Studio Aperto”).

Il cast sembra, come prima impressione, di forte impatto ai giovani infatti tante Pupe e…Trash.

La parte del cast femminile è composta da Melita Toniolo (ex Gf e inviata di Lucignolo), Natalia Bush (modella e ex valletta di Distraction), Pamela Camassa (ex concorrente a Ballando con le stelle e ex valletta ai Migliori Anni), Karina Cascella (ex opinionista di Uomini e donne), Kamila Dupont (modella e cantante), Emanuela Tittocchia (ex attrice in Un Posto al sole) e Fiordaliso (cantante e ex concorrente a Music Farm).

La parte del cast maschile, invece, è composta da solo 5 concorrenti che sono… Franco Trentalance (attore hard), Matteo Tagliarol (schermidore e prima medaglia d’oro dell’Italia a Pechino 2008), Clamente Russo (pugile, argento a Pechino 2008), Pasquale Laricchia (ex Grande Fratello) e i fratelli (Salvatore e Cristiano) Aneglucci che varranno per un solo concorrente (entrambi ex tronisti di Uomini e donne).

Come primo impatto sembrerebbe un buon cast… molto giovanile e molto trash. Naturalmente per confermare o smentire bisogna attendere la prima puntata.

L’appuntamento è per Gioved’ 9 ottobre, su Italia 1 alle 21.10 circa.

Billboard.com — A lot of ground is covered at Drive-By Truckers shows these days. In addition to the band’s typically roaring takes on lives, politics, the broken social contract, Southern and Northern identity, violence both domestic and in foreign sands, whiskey-fueled sadness and fast-fading hope, they’ve now expanded to take on soldiers returned from overseas, revenge and the various horrors involved with family (so much so that in this Charleston stop, they tossed an abrasive cover of Springsteen’s already-abrasive “Adam Raised A Cain” into a little mid-show mini-set about Father Issues).

That they continue to pull it off in such hammering, consistent fashion is not only a credit to their staying power (and ability to weather waves like the departure of Jason Isbell last year), but, as they showed on a sweaty and Jack Daniels-fueled 25-song set in Charleston, proof that it still might make sense to buy completely into the notion that rock n’ roll is the literal answer to many, many things.

The Truckers — now a six-piece featuring John Neff on pedal steel and Jay Gonzales on keyboards and organ, ably filling in for Spooner Oldham — attempted to take a break last year, and failed miserably. Following Isbell’s departure, they retooled, pulled back and embarked on “The Dirt Underneath” tour, an unplugged-and-seated affair that found them spinning slightly quieter songs and stories. It also found them inventing new ones: the tour resulted in “Brighter Than Creation’s Dark,” their eighth disc and a 19-track monster that addresses – and this is an extremely abbreviated list – a father mourning the loss of his family at the gates of St. Peter, John Ford movies, shiftless emo kids, the righteous and self-righteous (mostly the latter) and, in no small measure, drinking.

On stage, the reinvigoration was more evident than on record. Back to a two-man-fronted operation (several “Hood/Cooley ‘08″ T-shirts were visible in the audience) and employing what looked like a small portion of Kanye West’s light show, the band barely let their feet off the gas over two and a half hours. The head Truckers swap songs and stories with customary ease, and both have amped up the power on their rafter-warping solos. (For her part, bassist Shonna Tucker got a turn in the spotlight as well, sweetly swimming through “I’m Sorry Houston,” one of her three songs she wrote and sings on “Dark.”)

Patterson Hood continues to be the kind of guy who could look like he’s having the time of his life running a municipal water plant; he literally launches himself into his thunder-rockers (the soldier story “The Man I Shot,” the thunder-across-the-plains roar of “Lookout Mountain,” the jagged acceleration in “Sinkhole”) with abandon that makes you wonder why you don’t like your job that much, or for that matter, anything. And if some part of you isn’t briefly lifted by his gonzo, AC/DC-and-Molly Hatchet-referencing rantologue “Let There Be Rock,” you should probably be at home watching cable.

Mike Cooley, Hood’s iceberg foil on the right side of the stage, approaches things from the other side of the river but with equal potency; he’s a smooth, chain-smoking sage whose songs now — “Self-Destructive Zones” and “A Ghost To Most” chief among them — are basically written entirely in quotable nuggets (Talking tough is easy when it’s other people’s evil and you’re judging what they do or don’t believe/It seems to me you’d have to have a hole you’re own to point a finger at somebody else’s sheet.”)

For this go-round, the Truckers have signed on Neff full-time, and his impossibly easy pedal-steel work lovingly decorated the country-leaning numbers like “Zoloft” and “Lisa’s Birthday.” And Gonzalez on keyboards fleshes out the band’s apparently simmering juke-joint side; his keystrokes turned “Shut Up And Get On The Plane” into a boogie-woogie monster and his organ style planted loving kisses on tracks like “Angels and Fuselage.”

Pleasingly, the band took the occasion to dig back into the crates a bit, digging up twangier chestnuts like “Zoloft,” “Wife Beater” and “Uncle Frank” from their early, more dark-comic days. The encore even saw “Nine Bullets,” one of the band’s first-ever 7″ releases. Such songs mark the birth of the Truckers’ ability to mine moments of everyday hopelessness – and in some cases, near-horror – and find a way to make them not entirely lost; you might remember that approach working for acts like Springsteen and Neil Young, both covered on this night. It’s the oldest argument in the business — rock n’ roll as salvation — but by the time the Truckers (and opening act the Dexateens) slam their shovels into a lights-up tear through “Rockin’ in the Free World,” it’s not unlikely to feel not only like it’s extremely possible, but a little silly for ever doubting it in the first place.
