Music To The Ears Of Moloney The afternoon commenced on a sour note for punters as the despised outs

Music To The Ears Of Moloney

The afternoon commenced on a sour note for punters as the despised outsider Music In The Park scored a last gasp win in the Glasshouse Café Handicap (1200m) for two-year-old fillies at Caulfield this afternoon.
Settling fourth in the small five horse field, Brenton Avdulla gradually moved Music In The Park to the centre of the track where to make a line of four runners at the top of the straight.
However it was Music In The Park that sprinted best of the quartet, completing his last 400 metres in 23.52 seconds on the rated Dead (5) surface, to claim the $42,700 first prize.
In a driving finish, alarming betting ring drifter Music In The Park ($10-$31) edged out Absolute Faith ($5-$7) by a short half head with Miss Bellezza ($2.60-$3.40) a futher three quarters of a length away in third.
Short priced favourite Better Be The One ($1.60-$1.75 fav) settled in last position and failed to improve his position sufficiently running fourth beaten under two lengths from the winner.
Daria, a $650,000 purchase from the Easter Yearling Sale, promptly dropped out to last when the pace quickened at the top of the straight and was pulled up crossing the line by jockey Daniel Moor.
On face value, a fourth placing at Sale is not the sort of form needed to win next time around. However trainer John Moloney noted there were some factors in her favour.
“I couldn’t say we came here with confidence but we were very happy with our horse.”
“She was lost at Sale and travelled wide and didn’t do a bad job for her first run at 1200 (metres) so she was better prepared for today’s race and hence she came out and did a good job,” Moloney said.
“She had trained on well since her first-up run and we were handicapped into the race with Brenton claim – there’s always an advantage with that.”
“She was on her home track as well so we still had a couple of positives on our side,” Moloney added.
When asked whether the filly could get run over further ground, Moloney answered in the affirmative.
“She handled that well and I think she’ll be able to get up to the mile.”
“She’s a lovely filly,” Moloney added.
Moloney is unsure what the immediate future holds for Music In The Park commenting “I don’t think we’ll give her another run, I might give her a break on that but I don’t know.”
By Bel Esprit, Music In The Park is Songs Of Vienna’s first foal.
Songs Of Vienna was also trained by Moloney with some success. From twenty-three career starts she had four wins and seven placings, retiring with $267,350 to her name.
Songs Of Vienna ran second in the Group 3 Matron Stakes (1600m) before most notably winning the Listed Straight Six (1200m) at the same venue a month later on protest.
“She really went nice for me but she was always a little bit erratic.”
“This one has got a better temperament and hopefully has got as much ability,” Moloney quipped.

July 23, 2009 :: Matt Nathanson .music in the park. dramaaaaaa … =P Amy got there early to get

July 23, 2009 :: Matt Nathanson .music in the park.

dramaaaaaa … =P Amy got there early to get us a good spot. She chose to sit behind a mother and daughter who had staked out a spot right in front of the stage with two chairs, figuring nobody was likely to try to get in front of them. Little did she realize the drama that would ensue. When Matt Nathanson came on, the crowd surged forward and tho there was no need to, the mother and daughter stood up, abandoning their chairs. A curly-haired woman squeezed through the crowd and invaded their territory. The mother asked the woman to leave and they argued in a politely heated manner for quite some time. The argument seemed to end, but then curly-haired lady chose to make additional comments. Eventually, the mother packed up most of their stuff and snapped at the curly-haired lady, “happy?” Curly-hair thought she was victorious and had done us a favor, but alas, we liked the space and clear view of the stage the mother’s stuff has afforded us. It was especially hard for Amy because Curly-hair stood directly in front of her, blocking her view. We quietly made comments and faces at each other and perhaps Curly-hair got the hint because after a few moments, she turned around and said Amy could stand in front of her because she “didn’t really care”. Kind of an odd statement to make after the fuss she made. Perhaps it was merely the principle of the matter? Later on, a trio of heavily hair-sprayed, heavily made-up women squeezed in front of Horace and next to me. They chose to gab loudly during one song and Curly-hair informed them they were ruining the song for everyone. Ah, mixed feelings for curly-haired lady. On the one hand, she seems nice-ish and on the other quite obnoxious.

Matt Nathanson was good. Always enjoyable. Were there new jokes? Not sure. I can’t remember his old jokes. Any jokes he made were all new to me =) The size of the crowd has certainly increased since the first time I saw him at the Swedish American Hall. He performed alone that time to an audience of like 30 people seated in folding chairs.

August 1, 2009 :: The Fray w/Jack’s Mannequin .shoreline amphitheatre.

My first time doing lawn seating at Shoreline. In fact, I think this is only the second concert I’ve attended at Shoreline despite having grown up just down the street. Overall, enjoyable, not too cold. Lawn seating is definitely far from the stage. We could see pretty clearly once we moved down near the railing, but the performers were pretty small.

August 5, 2009 :: Priscilla Ahn w/Robert Francis .cafe du nord.

Attending Priscilla Ahn’s concert was a last-minute decision. Horace asked me early in the morning if I was interested in going, but we did not attempt to purchase tickets until around 4 pm. SOLD OUT. However, a search of Craiglist found that one person was offering two free tickets to the concert, available for pick-up in South San Jose. Horace emailed her and she lived literally on my way home, just a few blocks from my work. In another funny turn of events, I recognized the name on the envelope as someone who once might have pledged Kappas. This was later confirmed by Slau. I couldn’t confirm at the time because her mom was the one who answered the door.

I hadn’t previously listened to much, or any really, of Priscilla Ahn’s music, but had heard about her on someone’s Facebook status. Her songs are very mellow and she seems very sweet. Ran into Jim at the end of the concert. We stared at each other for a few minutes, neither one quite sure if we really recognized the other. It was amusing.

August 12, 2009 :: Diana Krall .davies symphony hall.

Tickets courtesy of Alvin Chan. I can’t say I’m a fan of Diana Krall, but Alvin said the acoustics at Davies Symphony Hall are supposed to be amazing so I was curious. Also, I wanted to see (hear) why Alvin enjoys her music so much. Plus, free. She sang well and played the piano extremely well. Very jazzy music. As we were listening, I kept thinking my mom and Uncle Jorge would really have enjoyed it. Toooo bad I was the one there instead of them. =P Young attended the concert with me. Not really his usual type of music either. I had no idea she was married to Elvis Costello.

One perk of summertime – free outdoor concerts! Thanks, city of San Jose.

Thriving Ivory

Willfully ignoring the several people requesting “Angels on the Moon,” preferring to leave it to the end to hold our attention. Probably a smart move.

He has quite a polarizing voice – quite the crazy range, for anyone.

“Dreaming of angels on the moon…”

Lots of little kids perched on their parents’ shoulders. I love when kids figure out that slapping their hands against their ears creates gentle suction and does funky things with loud music.

Better Than Ezra

Definitely smelled weed by this point in the night.

Gloria’s imitation of just one of the lead singer’s monologues : “Intellectual masses…we just need somebody to invent this…I can see some red over here…ember red…”

Please just play the music. Thank you. They comply, and it is good.

Then again – “We need someone to invent us an intelligence cluster. Just like, masses of intelligence…nanobots cleaning the streets at night, this is a high-tech place right? I want a 5% cut, whoever ends up inventing intelligence clusters…”

What?!

Wednesday marked the end of this summer’s Play Day in the Park and Summer Concert Series at Co

Wednesday marked the end of this summer’s Play Day in the Park and Summer Concert Series at Coulon Park. We had the opportunity to attend both events and I have to say I wish they could go on for a few more weeks because I hate to think that this summer is already coming to an end.

Play Day in the Park was held at Thomas Teasdale Parkand I thought it was great. There were two inflatables that were kept busy at all times, a great craft on City of Renton paper complete with paint and glitter and there were free lunches available to anyone 18 and younger through the City of Renton’s Free Summer Lunch Program. I am not sure if the workers there were volunteers or city employees but I have to commend them on being so patient and engaging with the kids, they really make the program enjoyable for those who participate. I am sorry to see the program go for the season, sometimes it is nice to go to the park knowing that there will be a lot of kids to play with.

Creme Tangerine

Concert at the Park was great. It was truly enjoyable to go out, lay on a blanket in the grass, eat, drink and listen to live music. The weather could not have been better and again the sense of community was felt all around. Creme Tangerine provided the soundtrack for the night with Beatles’ songs that got the crowd, both young and old, on their feet and dancing.

It was a great way to spend an incredible summer night and like I said before I hate to see it end, but there is always next year.

We here at Brocket 99 News are shitting our pants over this latest news release, thankfully sent to us by our good friend Ask Lenard. Iris Larratt(Laratt, Larrat) is live and well and will be performing at “Music In The Park” in Oliver BC on August 27th, 2009 at 6:30pm. Iris Larratt made it to world wide notoriety not for her music but for an interview done by the immortal Ernie Scar in the infamous Brocket 99 Radio Show.

Click to see me in concert in 2009!

So one of you Brocketologists must make it to this event. Take pictures, take video, take audio and if at all possible get an interview!!! This is world breaking news muich larger than the Capture of Saddam Hussein, the Riots in Iran, or even the Death of Michael Jackson.

Yesterday saw the biggest Music in the Park yet held at Whitehead Gardens with eight live performers covering a wide range of musical tastes. Brass band, choir, samba, steel band, folk and rock – there really was something for everyone.

I spent most of the time helping on the bar where as we rapidly ran out of the excellent real ale supplied by Bank Top Brewery we had to make frequent topping up trips!

It is a long day twelve hours from start to finish but it is great to see so many people coing along to join in a real community event. Everyone who attended should thank Geoff and Gill Leach who play a central role in planning the event and pulling it all together. In addition to Gill and Geoff there are dozens of others who all freely give of their time to make this event happen. Thank-you to each and every one!

It has been a busy week and apologies for not reporting earlier!
I have spent two days out this week as a volunteer helping Young Enterprise. Young Enterprise are a Charity that help young people learn about business and the world of work. On Monday I was at Urmston Grammar School in Trafford and yesterday I was at Werneth School in Stockport. Yesterday I was helping with an Airline Masterclass where the pupils have the opportunity to work in a group and undertake all the different jobs involved in the airline industry from design and marketing to sales and finance.
You can visit the website of Young Enterprise in the North West here.

Tomorrow I will be attending the Summer Fair organised by Bury Hospice at Closes Park on Dumers Lane in Bury.
On Sunday Music in the Park returns to Whitehead Gardens in Tottington. There are eight live bands and hopefully there will be good weather and a bumper crowd.

In case you don’t know what the heck I’m talking about, the band Fifty Amp Fuse played at Music in the Air Friday evening. They are a pretty good rock band that has a nice catalog of classic rock covers (perhaps some originals, too.) I got to hear part of their show, but the song that really stuck with me was “Hold the Line.” It’s a good little song, but 72 hours of that almost continuously running through my head is quite enough, thank you.

At least I’ll never forget the show. What more could a band want?

Wednesday. But Thursday is turning into my new favorite day. I get stuff done, get to relax a little bit, don’t have to worry too much about things. And then at night, I get to celebrate with Music in the Park. Oh the joys of summer.

Got an exciting weekend coming up, I’m sure all of you do as well. Let’s see what my agenda is for the next few days:

Thursday: Blog, work, beautify, Music in the Park

Friday: work, work, work, CQ happy hour, drink, drink, eat, sleep

Saturday: clean, clean, blog, Pink Party in SF, drink, drink, sleep

Sunday: Cry because I missed the Gay Pride Parade in SF, CalTrain, work mtg, cry some more, movies?

I’ll work on posting some video and pics from tonight’s Music in the Park. Have a wonderful day everyone.

One thing I do not like to share is… space.

A FREE Third Eye Blind concert near SJSU is like a college free-for-all to stand as close as humanly possible, smoke whatever you can light on fire, and act weird.

And a picture… with my hands raised and quite some zoom. I realize that I wasn’t as big of a fan as I thought because I only knew three songs. That’s really lame… like Terry said, we are “radio fans.”
