Top 5 Music Discovery Sites

Long gone are the days of browsing through record stores to find new music (record stores are still

Long gone are the days of browsing through record stores to find new music (record stores are still awesome hangouts though), making physical mixtapes for your friends (except for the nostalgic among us), and putting CDs on your Christmas list (iTunes gift cards anyone?). Digital technologies and the seemingly endless supply of online music destinations have forever changed the way we discover the tunes we like.

Born out of my own frustration with the retardedly over-crowded “music discovery” space, this post aims to sift through the plethora of sites, many of which are variations of the same concept, and pinpoint the best ones.

Do you prefer to listen to short clips of top downloads on iTunes because it’s easy? (Ya, iTunes is more of a place to buy a song/album that you know you want, but you can definitely discover new stuff by poking around, checking the free download of the week etc). Are you a fan of one of the numerous music social networking sites that let you discover people with similar musical taste, create/share playlists, or track down obscure indie bands? Or do you love Pandora’s almost-no-work-involved recommendation system?

We’re all different when it comes to our preferred methods of music discovery, but the end goal is the same, right? We want to consistently discover new music that resonates with us personally – bands we can go see live, music to download, artists we can relate to. There are so many places to do this now it makes my head spin, so I needed to simplify.

With that, here are my top 5:

Pandora
I’ve been a fan of Pandora for a long time. The internet radio station, with its robust recommendation system based on the work of 50 analysts who break songs down into musical attributes, is surprisingly good at finding music that suits your tastes. And with the thumbs-up/thumbs-down rating system, the more you use it the smarter it gets. Their Facebook app is certainly convenient too.

iLike
If you can put up with 30 second clips, iLike is great for discovery. The fact that it can be plugged into Facebook, iTunes, MySpace, Bebo and others makes it a versatile social platform and is probably why they have so many registered users making profiles, sharing playlists and the like. And you can get lots of free music from new artists.

Fuzz
“Music Uprising…Connecting people who create and love music”. Other than having pretty good music discovery tools, I like Fuzz because I like the Fuzz Manifesto. This is the kind of mentality that I think everyone in the music industry needs to adopt, and soon, in order to survive and thrive in the exciting new frontier that is developing. Open, participatory, fair etc…

Grooveshark
In addition to letting you listen to any song in its entirety, Grooveshark rewards you for sharing music with people by giving you credits for free music. It also serves as an online library so you can store your music and access it from anywhere. There is a tagging/ranking system to help you find what you want as well as playlist creation/sharing.

Last.fm
Easily one of the most dominant players in the social music discovery space, Last.fm has a powerful recommendation engine based on data from the user community (unlike Pandora’s engine which matches similar musical attributes). Worth noting here is that Last.fm is now paying royalties to unsigned artists – and thus providing an alternative for artists who are not part of SoundExchange.

If this list is too short for you, check Mashable’s Music News Toolbox: 50+ Links for Discovering New Music to read about sites like iJigg, MOG, Goombah, Music Nation, and many more. Or leave us a comment with your favorite ones.

And of course, soon you will be able to discover kick-ass new music at MixMatchMusic. Stay tuned.

We at Rebel Bell would like to wish you and yours a safe and happy Independence Day!

If you get a minute this holiday weekend, vote for Kris Bell in the MusicNation SPIN Hot Pursuit contest. It’s head to head time so it may take a bit longer to get to Kris, but dedication pays off. You’ll get to hear the amazing song, “I Know the Sun Will Call,” which will make the time all worthwhile.

CASSANOVA REVIEW Review: Cassanova (CASS C.E.O. of S.T.O.R.M. Records) By: K-Be-Tol Born and raised,

CASSANOVA REVIEW

Review: Cassanova (CASS C.E.O. of S.T.O.R.M. Records)
By: K-Be-Tol

Born and raised, Cassanova lived and went to public school in Flint, Michigan. With his families history deep in the movement through the 50’s and 70’s. It is no surprise that Cassnova would find him self reaching and speaking to the world. Mark Clark, a revolutionary Black Panther leader, and Uncle to Cassanova and BIG-G. Started The Breakfast Program For Children with Fred Hampton that is now international. Mark Clark helped in forming the lives of these two men.

“All the non-believers of self’ motivation and determination, drove me to this point in my life.”

At the start of his career, Cassanova was his own main support. While surrounded by negative influences he strived to find his own source of motivation and inspiration. We all can relate to the daily struggle, that faces us when just trying to live. Living in a place, surrounded by drug dealers and thugs, Cassanova never really had roll models. He focused on becoming a roll model for everyone else. Which lead him to help form S.T.O.R.M Records, which stands for Strong Talented Organized Revolutionary Men.

As, for how Cassanova feels about the industry, and its politics: “I asked if the industry needed to be fixed?”

“The industry does need to be fixed, and I have the right tools for the job. lol”

As an artist that is reaching for the stars. He hopes with his versatility, he can give a different style of music to the game. With his families history, he is speaking about revolutionary rap and speaking straight from the heart. He also spoke about how he wants to help change a lot of the materialistic things, about the music industry. By bringing respect, something positive, with straight forward rhymes. As far as politics? Cassanova believes in following your heart and doing what is right for your life, not the mighty dollar. While still understanding that it takes money to live in today’s world.

“I always did music, as long as I could remember, struggling in the hood. That’s why, my music is so heart felt or easy to relate too.”

A man with faith and determination Cassanova is thankful to the lord, for giving him his gift of music. To have the chance to express his pain, and views to the world. He is an artist, who has a vision to create something that will help make a change for the better. Every day he strives for that lyrical crown, with his crew behind him. I believe CASS and BIG-G are living in the moment, getting their respect, and speaking their point of views. Someone who is standing up to and for the world.

“life is not promised.. but death is surely certain.”

By: K-Be-Tol

“Who is DOTMIG?”

Some of us, have heard the music by DOTMIG, and know the words written on paper. Now, lets find out what DOTMIG is truly about. When it comes to their music, and the industry. Or better known as: “The epistemology of aesthetics”

Steven Mignoli: “I believe in the individual, to encourage the individual. We are not people, we are individuals”

After speaking with Steven Mignoli and his girlfriend of three years, Diana Pabon. Who met at the City Bistro, and lived at the Hoboken’s luxury waterfront high rises for some time. I have come to a better understanding for myself of the band DOTMIG. For the hard work they put in, to making their dreams become a reality.

In 1975 his parents, Joe and Ann Mignoli started Hoboken Beer and Soda outlet. Where Steven worked learning what a blue collar worker does. Through out his family history, there is hard working blue collar people, like the average America. So I can see where he gets his drive to keep trying and pushing until he feels, he has achieved what he is trying for.

Steven also knows what is like to fail, where in 1989 he recorded two songs and performed them at clubs with the group MPK. At Fuego in Spanish Harlem and the former Passions in North Bergen.

After joining up with Guido Diaz, a Latin Grammy award winner. With Mino Class on bass, SexynLean on guitar, and Raphael the professor on drums. They came together to create an album that would voice their opinions and express their thoughts through their music. DOTMIG’s sounds are extraordinary, with such influences as RocknRoll, jazz, Techno, R&B, and World-beat.

DOTMIG, who has been entering a number of contest like, The Best MySpace Musician, Indiesolo, Musicvault, and musicnation. Has put this extraordinary band on the front page for the masses. Which has earned them, a number of fans, and many connections to the music industry.

Each member of the band is multi-talented when it comes to playing instruments such as: The Piano, Harmonica, Acoustic Guitar, Drums, The Violin, Flute, Etc. While they are humane by nature, they have an understanding. What it takes to earn respect in the world, and in the music industry. They are taking a foot hold in the art movement, and letting their voice be heard.

K-Be-Tol: “What is or was your major, while in school?”

Diana Pabon: “Business, also soccer *laughs* ..”

I learned that Diana Pabon had went to school for Business, which has helped DOTMIG in many areas of the music industry. We talked about SexynLean’s account at digg.com. A news source site with blogging features. For those looking for information, or wanting to share information. She enjoys researching and talking about all types of information.

Which she believes, “to have some kind of understanding, is better then having no understanding.”

This is a smart woman, who knows her philosophy, politics, and Business. With her musical talents and intelligence, this will only help make her a great artist. Looking to create’ and express her self, like the modern day civilized woman she is. With her business background, Sexy looks, and artistic talents, Diana Pabon has helped DOTMIG bloom.

K-Be-Tol: “What would you consider the Genre of DOTMIG’s music?”

DOTMIG: “Diversified!”

They went on to point out, “that their music is individual, and is about being an individual.” I learned that they understood, what it takes to work together, and have equality, amongst civility, while still having an understanding for the individual. While DOTMIG has an understanding for this, they continue rising to the top, with hopes to inspire the next person.

So I am happy to support DOTMIG, for creating, expressing, their extraordinary sound for our entertainment. This band is going to go far, from coast to coast, to international. I would keep an eye on this band because they are helping the art movement, become what the movement is all about.

DOTMIG will help bring change with the evolution of sound. With strong beliefs and their virtue at its highest, DOTMIG stands before the art movement, ready to take any challenge head on. DOTMIG is a scene, which is taking shape and this is what makes DOTMIG an art movement.

I never know which song will jump out at me to become my song of the day but this one did it today. A thumping base that can’t be ignored – a rap that have a friendly edge not aggressive even though it has the classic punch, plus the smoothest melody/harmony section. Well constructed and never boring – a good feel to promote a good mood with subject matter that we can identify with or smile at – JAWZ – SOTD 2nd May added to station 5/2/2007 7:22:57 AM
Derek Sivers/CD Baby – A Leader In CD Distribution

Reprinted with permission.

Derek Sivers is our boy-next-door marketing genius, renaissance boy. He juggles music, marketing, and internet into a blur so that you can’t see the individual ingredients, and uses it to show musicians how they can take advantages of all the changes going on in the music-internet explosion.

Derek Sivers graduated at the top of his class at Berklee College of Music, then moved to New York City and was a staff producer/engineer/taperoom-boy at Warner Brothers for three years. In his three years at Warners, he used his vacation days to tour the world as the guitarist for Japan’s most famous composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto. All the while, working weekends as the featured performer/musician of The Touring Mime Circus.

He quit Warner Brothers in 1992 when it “got too comfortable” and chose the challenge of being a full-time musician/entrepreneur ever since.

After putting together his band called Hit Me, Derek decided to start touring the college market, and was soon hired by over 400 colleges in three years. When the Hit Me CD was released in 1995, it was put into rotation on over 300 college radio stations around the country, and Hit Me soon toured not only the northeast USA, but a successful European tour as well. His music was used on a handful of TV shows and even a feature film.

Although Hit Me sold 3000 CDs at shows, none of the online record stores (cdnow, etc.) would sell it without a major distribution deal. So
Derek started selling it online through his own website and asked a dozen musician friends if they wanted him to take care of their online
orders, too. Soon friends told friends, and CD Baby was born.

In only 2 years, CD Baby became the 2nd largest seller of independent CDs on the web, 2nd only to Amazon. Yet CD Baby still stays fiercely independent, refusing all advertising and investors, and selling only independent artists’ CDs.

Derek Sivers has taken the role of music marketing mentor, asked to speak on panels at most major music business conferences. (Even Napster asked him to go to court on their behalf in their big trial against the major labels.) His website, MarketingYourMusic.com will be turned into a book for independent musicians soon.

SexynLean & DOTMIG give kudos….

www.myspace.com/k_be_tol

I have spent a lot of hours listening to a lot of industrial Techno from the E.U. and listen to a lot of Worldbeat. DOTMIG whose sounds are very similar to Urban & R&B & has a a good rhythm we all can dance to. You wont find these beats and sounds here in the
U.S., they are their own beats and sound nothing like Techno. I would not know what to call their style of music.

Something I have learned after spending some time speaking with the band. Is that they understand what it takes to push their music into the world and get their voice heard. Not only are they very good artist with exceptional beats and sound. They are very intelligent and show their intelligence through their music.

If the world is not ready for these sounds then the people here in the U.S. needs to catch up with Europe when it comes to dance/industrial, worldbeat music.

SexynLean & DOTMIG would like to give a special thanks for this review of our valuable music, to our new friend & music connoisseur, who is currently publishing his 2nd book as we speak.
