Ok, so I may be a little behind the times, but I just discovered ‘Songza‘- basically a music search engine that allows you to stream and share songs for free. It’s pretty cool and can definitely be a bit of a time waster if you are trying to procrastinate from some important task that you need to complete.

Searching for new music can be a daunting task. Services like Apple’s iTunes or the website last.fm make it relatively easy to find music similar to songs or artists you already listen to. But type in “instrumentals for yoga class” and you probably won’t get very far.

Luke Barrington, a PhD student at the University of California San Diego, plans to change that with the beta version of his music search engine, Herd It, which he launched last week. His goal is to find and recommend music based on natural-language searches, providing users with both familiar and new songs that share acoustic qualities.

When he recently pitted his recommendation software against Apple’s music recommendation system, Genius, he found that users were equally satisfied with playlists suggested by both methods.

Genius is what Barrington labels a “metadata-based” system. The software associates music with information not necessarily related to the audio content, such as the name of the song, artist and album, and then averages statistics about how many users purchase and play each track. In other words, Genius is just telling you, “the people that listen to this song also listen to that song,” and suggests you do the same.

Barrington’s approach is more similar to the Pandora Radio model, or what he calls a content-based system, which builds playlists with songs that have similar sounds. Humans assign semantic descriptors to each of Pandora’s more than one million songs based on genre, emotion, instruments or vocals. For example, typing “Kings of Leon” into the search box produces a playlist featuring “electric rock instrumentation, a subtle use of vocal harmony, mild rhythmic syncopation, major key tonality and electric rhythm guitars.”

Herd It builds upon both Apple’s crowdsourcing mentality and Pandora’s natural-language song characterization, but incorporates machine learning to go beyond the capabilities of either system. Barrington created an algorithm to identify acoustic patterns in a song that predict a semantic tag. It then finds similar patterns in other songs and applies the tag automatically, eliminating the need to tag every song separately.

To this end, Barrington created a game on Facebook that allows users to ascribe qualities to thirty-second long clips of popular songs in a variety of genres. There are nearly 150 tags related to instrumentation, vocals, style, emotion, and even where you would prefer to listen to a song (relaxing at the beach, dancing at a party, while driving, etc.). When enough people independently agree on the same tag for a song, the algorithm learns to assign that tag to songs with similar acoustic patterns.

“Your definition of why a song is cool or why it goes well with another song may be quite different from mine,” Barrington said. “We’re hoping that the demographic information that we get from Facebook will help us to use Herd It data to learn demographic-specific representations of tags, like ‘teenage girls from San Diego think that this song rocks’ or ‘middleaged housewives from Europe would find this tune romantic’.” As the algorithm evolves, Herd It could one day provide personalized recommendations.

The machine gets smarter as more people play the game and as more music is available. Herd It’s current database is relatively small (about 10,000 songs) but Barrington hopes to partner with a major license holder for access to a more comprehensive collection. Since the algorithm is trained to read only acoustic qualities, it can be compatible with any music service. So while existing music recommendation engines build playlists around a specific song or artist, Herd It, in theory, should be able to create a playlist based on the query, “jazz trumpet melodies for a romantic dinner.”

There is even an option on Herd It for artists to upload their own music, which automatically receives relevant tags and is just as likely to appear on a playlist as any popular song with the same tags – an attribute not available through Genius, which requires that any new song they wish to add to their collection must first be listened to by a large number of users.

Barrington’s ultimate music recommendation engine would incorporate aspects of Genius’ collaborative filtering that leverage huge amounts of user ratings and information that is hard to extract from just listening to the audio (e.g., popularity, release data, artist similarity, etc.), into Herd It so that any new song can immediately be added and recommended in the same context as older or more popular tunes. “Our system doesn’t know anything that the average music fan is aware of,” said Barrington. “Once we add that information in, we think we can build something that is really smarter than Genius.”

While transitioning from over a year with a dysfunctional PC to my first Mac, my friend–the same savvy lady who clued me in to Good Search–introduced me to Sad Steve, a free, quirky, limitless music download site.  I can’t express enough my utter glee.

A former Limewire devotee, I had my doubts.  This simple, roughly designed website was going to provide me with free music downloads sans scary viruses and  other potentially harmful “unwanted extra stuff,” as she phrased it, that I knew nothing about?  Yes, Limewire had its share of problems (actually, probably many of the problems I had with my last computer resulted from its presence on my hard drive) but at that point it was dominating with known-evil security and the beauty that’s burrowed into low expectations.

 I quickly discovered, however, that Sad Steve is completely safe.  And unlike Limewire, it requires no program download.  The only other site I have found that seeks to serve a comparable function is Fruitunes, which I still can’t seem to figure out.   It was created to be far too complicated and never seems to work for my computer (which is brand new, so i see no reason for problems to arise…)

One of the greatest things about Sad Steve, too, is the site’s personality and approach to its users.  Whereas Limewire and similar download systems offer only a simple and outdated search, Sad Steve offers off-the-beaten-path downloads, new and acclaimed artist news, and playlists to which users can add or post comments.

The key is, Sad Steve offers all of this for music from all genres–not just indie–or whatever the cool kids call it–and a light-hearted, punchy humor carries the rhetoric.  According to the site, August will also bring the commencement of Sad Steve’s Band Pilot Program.  Looks like opportunities for free reviews, exposure, and womm will ensue!

BTW, if you’re going to download something AMAZING from Sad Steve, I’d make it the soundtrack to 500 Days of Summer.  Brilliant.

Recently I have come across some very cool music platforms which I must share with anyone who appreciates music even on the smallest level.   Think FREE music, and lots of it, which can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection and there’s no buffering or loading.   Not only that, some of these services act as social networks or they may be integrated with existing social networks through widgets, playlists, ratings/recommendations etc.  While waiting in anticipation for services like Spotify to become available in the US, I think these sites may help quench our insatiable musical thirst. 

GrooveShark – Essentially a music search engine matched with a seamless music player that allows you to build playlists and gives recommendations on other music you may like.  Very simple, but extremely useful if you know exactly what your looking for.

The Sixty-One – Combines the likes of a social network, music portal, and an interactive gaming experience.  I personally think this website is where it’s at when it comes to discovering independent artists.  Members are given different “quests” such as listening to the other users playlists for a set amount of time, or listen to five songs of your favorite new artist.  As individuals complete quests, they earn points and credibility, allowing community members to build social capital while also creating a unique, fun, and valuable experience. 

Deezer – A French music discovery social network similar to imeem. Setting Deezer apart is its unique desig, layout and features. Some of the unique features it boasts are individual artist communities and forums, genre-specific radio stations, interactive music discovery games, and music news resources.

At TechCrunch, Robin Wauters calls music search engine Fizy slick, superfast and addictive. Indeed. It. Is.

Seeqpod is a new search engine, focussing on multimedia content. You can hunt down music videos and mp3s and play them instantly, and what’s more, it’s all fully legal.

The service is available to embed into your website as just the search engine, or a playlist which you can share with your music loving chums. This is the most comprehensive service of its kind I’ve found yet, and it’s also available on your windows mobile.

What’s more, by going through to the In Silico page, you can find a list of things the Seeqpod team are working on, well worth checking out.

This I believe is a something that is becoming more and more common – we’re finding ourselves in a stage of anti-google. Google is so vast and expansive that sometimes it’s tough to find exactly what you’re looking for in amongst the page after page of ‘not quite but close’ search matches.

Are we going to find ourselves hunting for specific types of information through different search engines which speicialise in hunting down just the one type of information? Division of labour is one of the first things you learn about in business classes after all.

So here’s a lovely list of my top 5 anti-google music search engines:

Songza – nice and simple, quick, and very orange.

Track9 – gives you the option to download or embed your favourite songs into websites.

Mix Turtle – again very simple; you can’t download tracks but you can ad them to a playlist accessible by signing up to the service.

Playlist – add your favorite songs to a playlist by signing up, gives you the option to get the song as a ringtone.

Cuil – the epitome of anti-google, Cuil is a standard search engine, but it is fantastic for finding information about music and far more efficient than it’s big competitor, but poor for finding MP3s.

Last night I found a new web site that is really cool. The site is called sadsteve.com and it is a music search engine. I’ve used other search engines and on-line music tools but this one is different. It’s a music blog/search engine and it’s got the ability to download the songs if you engoy the results that you find. Check it out and search for a song or two and see if you find something you like.

We’re reaching the end. The music search engine that is NewTunes will be launching within a few weeks, and it is getting tense. Our partners are working their asses off, and we’re starting to feel the reality of having a live product – and it’s exciting as hell. FINALLY!!!!! (And those who know me know I’m not one to use exclamation points… pretty much ever.)

I just returned from a strategy session of sorts and “Love of My Life” from Erykah Badu with Queen Latifah, Angie Stone and Bahamadia just came on my iPod. This was great timing because it proved to be a great mood shift on the day (and I think the normally reserved JFK blew in and threw down a little jam before quickly abandoning it and leaving… it all happened so fast, though).

Today, in our Linux Page (in Spanish), we have added a brief review about MixTurtle an on-line music portal we have recently discovered surfing the web. MixTurtle is very easy to use: you have only to type your favourite artists (or songs) in the search tab and in less than a second it will bring interesting results to you.
