Blogs about: Music

Trance. Rock. CountryJazz. Classical. Latin. One woman’s noise is another woman’s music. Once upon a time, we went to record stores to sift for new artists or albums. Now we click our mouses on a “play” button — over and over — until we find something we like. Then, we plug portable music players into computers, load ‘em up with tunes, and off we go (or we stay at our desk, headphones on, drowning out office noise). The way we listen to music may have radically changed in the last decade, but the song remains the same: We’re melodic creatures, responding emotionally and physically to the lull of a siren’s heartache or the strum of a guitar.

Day 130 Still moving through the German materials – this one just makes me laugh.  It makes me laugh every time I use it – as it happens, it is actually quite useful.  Non-stick and wide enough to flip a sandwich.  And I laugh.  Grilled cheese has never had it so good.

The perfect Eighties legacy: Heritage by College
OnlyForKoolKids

This week the world went mad for Daft Punk, and not without justification. Random Access Memories, the duo’s first new album for eight years, turned out to be a fine, if not totally without flaws, homage to the disco and electro-tinged pop of their youth. Last month another widely heard but little known Gallic artist released an equally awe-inspiring nod to the past. Unlike Random Access Memories, however, it received almost no media coverage and – tragically – has flown by under the radar. If you are one of the many millions who saw the movie Drive, you’ll doubtless remember the swooning as its final scene faded to black to the accompaniment of College’s A Real Hero, a luscious synth-pop track that invoked hazily nostalgic memories of the Eighties. As it turned out, the man behind College, French accountant turned producer David Grellier, has been channeling a devotion to that decade into his music since 2005. Influenced by the aesthetic of Eighties film

Soul stretching
Colour me distracted

I didn’t sleep well last night. I’m sure all you social beings have heard that Yahoo just bought Tumblr. If they change something there will be a war, Tumblr isn’t Facebook or Twitter. Tumblr is an army and David Krap, Tumblr founder, is trying to keep everyone calm about it. I got to work this morning, went on Tumblr and saw these posts.     Haha. This should be fun to watch. A group of rebellious young adults gearing up for war.   -    Zara Larsson – Uncover (Richello Remix)   Active Child – You are all I see (Skit Remix)   Say Lou Lou – Julian (The Chainsmokers Remix)   Krewella – Alive (Hardwell ‘The Final’ Remix)   Admonic & Davies – Ascension   -   The thing about people is that we don’t change unless not changing becomes the less comfortable option. It’s unfortunate, but we’re creatures of habit and we’ll hold onto our convictions until we’re literally forced to stop. In retrosp

OAT MONTIEN + KIERSTEN HOLINE
Construct of the Mind

Often times, the line between dreams and reality gets blurred. Such is the case for illustrator Oat Montien. His work tells us stories and the colors carry a message, each shade perfectly coupled to create an ephemeral – and arguably haunting – effect. Kiersten Holine gives us a sweet tune of melancholy and hope. It reflects our passing and all the pets we leave on this planet.

Live review: Local Natives + New Gods + Texture Like Sun – The Zoo, Brisbane – 19/5/13
Paul McBride

Local Natives have been wowing fans up and down the country of late, and hot on the heels of their second album Hummingbird, they’re in town with the aim of doing the same to Brisbane. Drawing favourable comparisons to Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear, the quartet are well-known for their multiple harmonies and classy song-writing. The Zoo’s stage awaits their talents. First up for tonight’s gig is Melbourne indie-folk duo Texture Like Sun, who provide an understated but increasingly attention-grabbing performance with a series of ominously-haunting piano melodies and soaring vocals. Their song ‘One Great Prize’ is a good starting point for checking these guys out, if you’re into that sort of thing. Texture Like Sun The second support for tonight is Melbourne indie-rock quintet New Gods, who will possibly forever be described as featuring former members of Little Red; that once omnipotent but ultimately substance-free band of pop-lite not-quite-pretty bo

Song of the week: ‘Amalia por amor’ performed by Hayley Westenra
Michelle Wynne

I have been hugely inspired by Hayley Westenra since she released her first self-titled album at the tender age of 14. Being a fellow Kiwi, an aspiring singer, and the same age myself, I have followed Hayley’s journey with fondness and pride, and I have a deep respect for her and her team. This week has been tough for me, but I have found comfort and solace in Hayley’s albums “Treasure”, which is a compilation of beautiful Irish heart-songs, and also Hayley’s latest album, “Paradiso”, which she recorded with Ennio Morricone. A particular track that has resonated with me this week is “Amalia por amor’, which is composed  in the memory of a Portuguese singer and actress, who died in 1999 – the title translates to “For the love of Amalia”. I love the sense of raw passion and vulnerability that Hayley captures as she sings this, and the melody and supporting orchestration evokes strong emotion for me. I hope you enjoy

New Music: The Preatures
Alfitude

This one grew on me so much so that I am calling it track of the week. It’s a bit too hipster, but it’s so catchy and cool when the chorus kicks in, mixing indie with soul and all kinds of goodness. Check out here.

Race Day Playlist…What do you listen to?
On a Jam Hunt

Do you listen to music on Race day during your race? I have been listening to podcasts for a while now and have lost my touch for creating great playlists! eek! Tomorrow I am 10 days out from my first actual ‘serious’ event.  I have spent today coming up with some good tune-age to help keep my focus.  The way I have planned out my tunes are “mellow” for first half and “Powersong” for second.  I want to make sure I have at least 1.5hours worth of tunes, I have no expectations of my timing except that it be under 1.5hours and closer to 1hour, well as close as I can get, but not expecting any great magic to achieve sub 1hour.  Realistically. I am sitting at 1.3hours worth of tunes, so this is where I need your help! I probably need one more Mellow song and One more Powersong… SUGGESTIONS?… Any Genre, any beat, any artist…HIT ME! Jay
