¿Se puede hacer más en menos tiempo?

A The Smiths le bastaron cinco años para convertirse en uno de los grupos más influyentes en la música Indie británica y hacer buena la frase “It´s better to burn out than to fade away“, pronunciada con posterioridad por el malogrado Kurt Cobain.

Fue en 1982 cuando dos jóvenes de Manchester, Johnny Marr y Steven Patrick Morrissey, decidieron unirse para ‘dar a luz’ a una referencia del rock alternativo como son The Smiths.

Junto a Mike Joyce y Andy Rourke editaron su primer single, “Hand in Glove“, pero no consiguieron un éxito notable hasta la posterior publicación de “This Charming Man” y “What Difference Does It Makes?“.

Fueron cuatro los álbumes de estudio lanzados por The Smiths:

- The Smiths: Calmado y con menos energía de lo que indicaban sus singles, llegó al número 2 en las listas inglesas.

- Meat Is Murder: Mucho más estridente, políticamente incorrecto que el anterior y precedido por el lanzamiento de uno de los singles más conocidos del grupo, “How Soon Is Now?“. Alzó a los de Manchester al primer puesto de las listas británicas.

- The Queen Is Dead: Lanzado tras su gira por Reino Unido y los Estados Unidos y justo después de que “Bigmouth Strikes Again“, el primer single, advirtiese del tremendo éxito del que, se dice, es el mejor Lp de The Smiths.

- Strangeways, Here We Come: Cuando fue lanzado en septiembre de 1987, la banda ya había dejado de existir debido a tensiones internas que causaron la disolución del grupo. A pesar de no alcanzar el mismo éxito de sus anteriores trabajos, este llegó al número dos de las listas.

Cinco años, ¿Quizá los más productivos del Rock Indie a lo largo de su corta trayectoria?

Lo que sí es seguro es que The Smiths, tienen un merecido puesto entre los diez grupos más relevantes de la historia.

Creo que ha llegado el momento.

Llevo demasiado tiempo escribiendo en este blog como para no haber mencionado nunca a ‘la piedra angular‘ de mi biblioteca iTunes, ¿Seré un Snob?

Sería hace unos tres años cuando, un joven redactor de “El Trastero” (Yo), zapeaba entre diferentes canales de música cuando, de forma casual, se paró a ver un concierto de Kasabian en MTV y, desde entonces, quedó atrapado por esta mezcla de Electrónica y Rock Indie.

El grupo, formado en la ciudad de Leicester (Inglaterra), tiene como integrantes a Tom Meighan (vocalista), Chris Edwards (bajista), Sergio Pizzorno (guitarrista) e Ian Matthews (batería).

En 2004 sale a la luz Kasabian, su primer Lp, precedido del indiscutible éxito de singles como Processed Beats. Escuchen dicho tema, si son espectadores de “Sé lo que hicísteis“, les parecerá ver a Ángel Martín entrar por la puerta de sus hogares.

Más allá de los singles, este álbum no tiene ningún desperdicio gracias a temas como I.D., Butcher Blues o U Boat entre otros.

Estos “Carniceros” (eso significa Kasabian en Armenio) fueron declarados por Oasis sus “Herederos musicales” y demostraron, con su talento, que eran bastante más que teloneros de los hermanos Gallagher.

Noel Gallagher fue fundamental en la grabación de su segundo y, hasta hoy, último trabajo, Empire.

Este Lp, lanzado con la banda perfectamente consolidada y una firme base de fans a ambos lados del Atlántico, no tardó en llegar al número uno en las listas de Reino Unido aupado por la gran acogida de Shoot the Runner, Empire y Me Plus One, singles previos.

Kasabian, un grupo joven, con bastante tiempo por delante para enseñar al mundo de lo que son capaces.

Que complicado es expresar un sentimiento, que dificil es tratar de transformar y comunicar un sentir… mas aun cuando lo haces con un instrumento……

Existen muchos hombres y mujeres que lo han logrado y de ellos me quiero referir, gente que a nacido bajo esa buena estrella, con esa capacidad unica de transportarte con tan solo oir su obra….

una violata, un victor jara, un mozart, un chopin, un hendrix, un Jaco…..

en particular me referire al ultimo… un tremendo bajista, y los que apreciamos ese noble instrumento sabemos que lo de “tremendo” es poco con lo que representa para nosotros los musicos…

Nació en Pennsylvania, pero de chico se mudó a Fort Lauderdale Florida, donde se crió y desde temprana edad integró diversas bandas escolares, en las cuales se destacaba como baterista. De adolescente sufrió un accidente haciendo deportes que le provocó una lesión en la muñeca que le iba a impedir tocar la batería. Pastorius decidió entonces intercambiar los roles con el bajista de la banda en la que tocaba, llamada Las Olas Brass y aprendió el repertorio completo de la banda para su nuevo instrumento en tan sólo una semana. En 1974 comenzó a hacerse más reconocido cuando graba el notable disco Bright Size Life acompañando al guitarrista Pat Metheny, y permanece algún tiempo como bajista del grupo Blood, Sweat & Tears. Dos años después, grababa su primer disco solista, titulado Jaco, aclamado por la crítica y por sus colegas, y que lo llevó a los primeros planos de la escena jazzística internacional. Muchos consideran a este disco como de escucha imprescindible para los bajistas de todos los tiempos, no sólo por la riqueza técnica y el virtuosismo presente en todos sus temas, sino también por la calidad y sensibilidad de sus composiciones.

Jaco era un fanático admirador del grupo de Jazz Rock Weather Report, habiendo, en años anteriores a su debut discográfico, “acosado” al líder de dicho grupo, Joe Zawinul para que le diera el puesto de bajista en la banda, con el argumento de que él era “El mejor bajista del mundo”. Pese a la explicable resistencia inicial de Zawinul, finalmente Pastorius logró que escuchara una cinta con su música. Zawinul quedó muy impresionado sobre todo por el particular sonido de Pastorius, pensando en un primer momento que en la cinta que Pastorius le había dado este había tocado un contrabajo. Al poco tiempo, el bajista de Weather Report de aquel momento, Alphonso Johnson, abandonó la banda y Zawinul le ofreció instantáneamente a Pastorius reemplazarlo.

Jaco tocó con Weather Report desde 1976 hasta 1981, probablemente la mejor época de la legendaria banda, que ha quedado registrada en varios discos grabados tanto en estudio como en vivo. También tuvo la oportunidad de realizar extensas giras por distintos países del mundo, entre ellas una actuación del grupo que tuvo lugar en Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Luego de dejar Weather Report, Jaco formó su propia banda, Word Of Mouth, con la cual también grabó varios discos y realizó numerosas giras hasta el año 1984. Notables músicos fueron parte de aquella banda, entre ellos el baterista de Weather Report, Peter Erskine, el trompetista Randy Brecker, el saxofonista Bobby Mintzer y el percusionista Don Alias.

A partir de mediados de la década del 80, Jaco comenzó a sufrir las primeras manifestaciones de trastornos mentales, y se le diagnostica como maníaco depresivo. Las drogas que le habían recetado para tratarse le impedían concentrarse, lo adormilaban, lo que le imposibilitó componer; o peor aún, directamente le dormían los dedos, lo cual no le permitía tocar el bajo. Así que Jaco rehusó tratarse, cayendo en una espiral de conflictos familiares y conductas autodestructivas. Se volvió alcohólico, tomando por costumbre vagar por las calles y convivir con mendigos y vagabundos, de quien se haría amigo tocando para ellos. Incluso el famoso bajo Fender Jazz Bass que Jaco utilizó tanto tiempo le fue sustraído mientras jugaba un partido de baloncesto en las canchas de la calle 54 en Nueva York, como de costumbre dejaba el bajo apoyado en un banco sin prestarle atención mientras jugaba. Durante este tiempo simplemente se dedicaba a jugar al baloncesto y a vagabundear por las calles de Nueva York, consumido por una depresión galopante. Al igual que Charlie Parker, fue internado varias veces por sus trastornos maníaco depresivos, pudiendo pasar de la más absoluta depresión a un estado de euforia en cuestión de segundos. El 11 de Septiembre de 1987, Pastorius, nada más salir de la cárcel por robar un coche y conducirlo por una pista de atletismo (tampoco tenía permiso de conducir), intento sabotear un concierto de Carlos Santana, donde tocaba en ese momento Alphonso Johnson, bajista a quien sustituyó once años atrás en Weather Report. Al ser obligado a abandonar el concierto,y en estado de ebriedad,se dirigió a un bar de la zona donde fue expulsado a la fuerza, tras alborotar y sabotear otro concierto que se estaba realizando. El vigilante de seguridad (cinturón negro de karate) al echarlo le propinó una paliza que lo dejó inconsciente y en estado de coma. Pocos días más tarde sufría un derrame cerebral que acabó con su vida. El asesino finalmente fue condenado, pero sólo cumplió 4 meses de los 5 años que le cayeron.
