In the mid seventies on a Sunday in October departments from across the Cape would gather for a Fire Muster. It was held in the parking lot of Kmart and later moved across the street to the mall. I think it coincided with fire prevention week.

We donned red union suits for a timed event. The team would start in bed, in our case army cots. When the horn sounded we would leap up, don our gear and board the truck. We would drive about 200 feet and stop. Next we would pull two hose lines and knock over two wood targets on posts buried in a cement block. I think the time stopped after the hoses were shut down, rolled and placed on the back step of the fire engine.

The truck in the picture was the ’53 American LaFrance. It had been re-powered in the early seventies with a high revvin Detroit Diesel.
