I can’t believe the number of songs you hear at Christmas time each year
Some of them bring back the joy while others release the tears
You hear them every place after Thanksgiving Day
And you can’t wait till Christmas so they’ll go away
Their always on your mind
When you turn the radio on every time

All the songs they sound the same, it’s just a variation of a theme
Then one day it occurred to me, ” A Parody “, this all screams
It’s time to write a Christmas song for all to see
So they can be apart of the festivities
My Christmas wish this year to you
Is to teach you how to write a Christmas tune

The art of writing a Christmas Song
Is making it easy to sing a long
An upbeat melody is always a help
With a little back up from the Big Guy Himself ( HO HO HO )
Add sleigh bells to make the seasonal sound
Have some kids sing chorus like the Charlie Brown crowd
When you put it all together you can’t go wrong
This is the Art of Writing a Christmas Song
When you follow these easy steps
A Christmas song you can expect
My Christmas wish this year to you
Is to teach you how to write a Christmas tune

Young or old it doesn’t matter, if you follow these simple rules
A holiday song always brings a smile and you’ll be nobody’s fool
The Christmas season is a special time
When everybody likes to sing and rhyme
So my Christmas wish this year to you
Is to teach you how to write a Christmas tune

The Art of Writing a Christmas Song
Is making it easy to sing a long
An upbeat melody is always a help

of all things the things that i love in this life daft punk come at like number 3. my affair commenced in 1997 when i first saw the around the world video on MTV. i was obsessed with that video, and i didn’t know why. i was 10, so my music taste back then consisted of backstreet boys and… not much else. after a brief stint of me liking limp bizkit in 1999, i started listening to real music. “real” music consisted of a lot of things that i don’t like today, but were part of the public school cool kids scene back then in uruguay, like la vela pueca and ska-p (todos los yoruguas saben de lo que hablo). en fin, in 2001 i discovered discovery for real. again, with music videos. i remember those four videos, story of four aliens who got kidnapped. but the story kind of stopped right there. i was obsessed now with the song digital love. luckily, though, the story continued. i had no idea until about 2004 or 5, although it came out in 03. the feature film features all the songs from dicovery, and it tells the story of these aliens, anotehr extra-terrestial named shep who helps them escape earth and go back to their planet. It’s called Interstella 5555, the 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem. and here it is:

i watched again just today, i don’t know why. daft punk likes making movies, like Electroma, which came out last year i think, or 2007. I didn’t like Electroma, really. but oh well, my heroes can’t be right all the time. also, I liked it better when I didn’t know who daft punk really was. now we know… part of the charm is over. I remember in 1998 or something I was watching MTV and Ruth (se acuerdan de ruth, boludo?), an mtv vj from mtv argentina was talking about how she was going to interview the “real” daft punk… it was hilarious. they came out in their robot suits and pretended to be actual robots, and said that no human being could ever make music like theirs. lawls.

If you want to sing along
To your favorite Coldplay song
It’s as simple as one, two, three
All you do is just follow me

    Don’t worry about the words
That’s one thing you don’t have to learn
The key is what you do on stage
As the band starts to play, and they will play
You begin to tap your feet
As you hear that Coldplay beat
Put on your Sgt Pepper clothes
Now it’s time to be in a rock and roll show

Throw your hands up high if you wish
Flap around on the floor like a fish
Pretend that the audience knows what you say
As you dance around like an invertebrate
If you follow these simple facts
Next time you will know how to act

If you want to sing along
To your favorite Coldplay song

Now follow and repeat after me
Do what I do and what I see
Leave your real life behind and pretend
You are on stage, you are Chris Martin
You begin to tap your feet
As you hear that Coldplay beat
Put on your Sgt Pepper clothes
Now it’s time to be in a rock and roll show

Throw your hands up high if you wish
Flap around on the floor like a fish
Pretend that the audience knows what you say
As you dance around like an invertebrate
If you follow these simple facts
Next time you will know how to act

If you want to sing along
To your favorite Coldplay song

  Don’t forget to wail
It will never fail
To impress the girls
All around the world

Throw your hands up high if you wish
Flap around the floor like a fish
Pretend that the audience knows what you say
As you dance around like an invertebrate
If you follow these simple facts
Get the morning paper, soon I’ll be clipping
It’s the good life
Me and my wife

I get the Sports, she has the Style
We share the Comics cause they bring us smiles
Then both of us reach for
The inserts that mean more

And we fumble and tumble for the section
That brings us call for celebration
You know the part I’m thinking of
It must be Coupon Love

Skimming the ads for expiration dates
I say to my wife, ” It’s on sale we can’t wait.”
She smiles at me
There’s no debate

Now we’re up to our necks
In newspaper print
Then we notice another insert, we can’t resist
We start clipping, Coffee sipping

And we fumble and tumble for the section
That brings us call for celebration

so last night i went to a concert in bumfuck nowhere, suburbs of paris. the concert was anthony joseph and the spasm band. they were pretty good, a little too love loving caribbean rasta man experimental bullshit, but good musicians. the front man also spoke no french and demanded things like “make some noise” of us, which, about 4% of the attendees understood. at this concert, however, a white white man, bald, with glasses, very much looking like an ss officer, wearing a BLACK PANTHER tshirt. with machine guns on it too. i was in awe of this, for many reasons obvious to an american, but apparently not to the french. there was as well the anthropomorphized reason why i don’t want to have kids: a 40-something couple with an 8 year old kid. the poor boy was sitting by himself, freezing to death, while his hippie bullshit parents swayed to the music without any sign of coordination or sense of rhythm. his mom was wearing gaucho pants and a scarf on her head, i almost puked. it was cold like negative ballsack out, snow everywhere. shit looked more like greenfield, ma than paris. my toes froze i think, i cannot feel anything in them.
also, we drove by a place called CHICKEN TIMES and it made me laugh 800 laughs. but, two good things. no, three. the opening act, natural self from the uk was pretty decent. two, i made a new friend who is awesome. three, the beer was cheap.

Well we have no lead guitarist so we play it with our mouth
We had to cut back on the band since the economy went south
While other rock bands have split or simply ran out of luck
We are proud to say America can still earn a buck

We had big hits in the Seventies when Folk-Rock ruled the charts
But when the Eighties rolled around we turned from hip into Old Farts
We keep on singing our music, that’s what musicians do they say
Cause that’s how we earn a living and we get paid

We will meet you at the concert
And play for you up on the stage
We will sing you all our big hits
For anyone at any age
We’re glad your there And you still care
Bout Sister Golden Hair

So we travel around the country with a Horse that has No Name
Singing hits like Ventura Highway as we cash in on our fame
We are not complaining and please don’t start to sob
It’s because we are musicians, it’s our job

We will meet you at the concert
And play for you up on the stage
We will sing you all our big hits

Lately, I’ve been in Hyde Park Record Store and Dr. Wax more than I’ve been at home. Well, maybe not THAT much. But I have found myself roaming the aisles of those two stores, seemingly on a hunt for good ish to listen to. Not so much hip hop, but just good music. I rarely buy new releases anymore, mainly because they’re overpriced and most aren’t worth the price. I bought a copy of Outkast’s ”Aquemini” and Do Or Die’s ”Headz or Tailz” for $4.99 each. Two classics, and I barely spent more than $10, including tax. Today, I bought The Clash’s “Combat Rock”, an album that I hadn’t heard for almost 3 years. I paid only $7.99 for it. C’mon, son. If I’m not at a record store, I’m downloading some otherworldly, extraterrestrial mixtape that no one else seems to have listened to. How many people do you know that have heard Mick Boogie and Adele’s mixtape? I didn’t think so. I take pride in having such an eclectic taste in music. It’s starting to show in my iTunes, on my iPod, and my random performances throughout the day. I’m just walking around Chicago, trying to catch up on some of the music that has seemed to escape my ears. Everything I hear is dope, including Diplo’s remix of “Flashing Lights”. I’m most definitely not allowing anyone to influence what I listen to nowadays. That mentality died back in high school. I’d like to keep my music library pure, at least by my definition. P.S. I miss Karen!!! P.P.S. #shoutout to #myfavoritenerd, L-Boogie, Jon, and Fowler for introducing me to some pretty dope muzak of late

When we’re not attempting to appear somewhat ‘hip’ here at Make and Deux, we occasionally do something tragically un-hip. And last Wednesday night, that thing was going to see Miley Cyrus play at The O2 in Dublin.

You mightn’t think that’s too bad, ya know, a bit of craic and all that, but the tickets in fact cost us €92.50 each. Yes, they were ridiculously overpriced and I can’t believe we even considered buying them, but we did, and we went along, AND WE HAD FUN.

We were both actually dreading the gig, considering that it would be full of children under the age of ten and the parents that they had bullied into buying the expensive tickets, but moreso because our seats were separate. Since we had booked them online on our own cards, we’d ended up miraculously in the same row but forty seats apart. However, by luck, there was a free seat beside me so Paula dashed over, thankfully evading The O2 security staff.

The whole thing was a very slick production, with every detail planned to within an inch of its life. During one song, she fell into a pit on the stage and then appeared on screen submerged in water, as if that was what she’d fallen into, when really she was just legging it backstage for a costume change.

The highlight had to be during Fly on the Wall, where she entered on some sort of tractor/cart with her dancers in tow. Ad, towards the end of the song, when she was lifted off stage by wires and suspended above the audience, flying around like a literal fly.

The setlist was a carbon copy of her previous gigs on the Wonder World tour, with all the expected hits like 7 Things, Party in the USA and See You Again included.

There were some odd touches to the show – most notably when Hoedown Throwdown segued into the Black Eyed Peas’ Boom Boom Pow for a dancer solo. A video message from will.i.am appeared on the main screen, Miley shouted “Hey everybody give it up for will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas!” or something to that extent, and once again ran off into the ether. She also forgot the lyrics to Party in the USA at one point, stumbling at the “And the Britney song was on” line.

She doesn’t sound as good live as she does on her albums, but she certainly belts the tunes out and although it got a bit shouty at points, she hit all the right notes for the most part.

The encore consisted of two songs – a huge change in comparison to The Swell Season concert we attended the night before, which had about fifteen – See You Again and The Climb. It was, as encores have now become, completely staged, as if the teenybopper wails of “MILEY! MILEY! MILEY!” (which did drag on for what had to be close to five minutes) had anything to do with her return to the stage.

She had a bit of banter with the crowd, but it was all very predictable stuff like, “You’re the loudest crowd we’ve had all tour!” or “I’m loving Ireland so much, you guys are great!” and such. But that’s to be expected.

All in all, it was the most fun I’ve had in a while. It has to be said, Miley Cyrus puts on a good show, even if it is the product of a marketing machine gone mad.

Sadly, we don’t have any snaps of ourselves with Miley during her shopping spree on Grafton Street, due to us both being in work or elsewhere, but I did get a great picture of Paula with Miley’s mother, Leticia “Tish” Cyrus, on Grafton Street the next day. It did take us a good ten minutes of following her around the street to pluck up the courage to say something to her (Paula: “ARE YOU TISH??”), but she was lovely and is probably the closest we should ever be allowed get to the woman herself.

Back when I kept this space fresh, I wished a Happy 43rd Birthday to Kermit Ruffins, a New Orleans trumpet player and vocalist who I adore not only for his musicianship, but for his simple yet profound ’eat, drink, and be merry’ approach toward each and every day.

Who could’ve guessed that, two years later, that same man would be my boss. Or at least would sort of be my boss. Though not really.

See, I’ve never met Kermit, nor do I expect to draw a paycheck from him anytime soon. But about a month ago, I started e-mailing with James Demaria, a photographer and filmmaker who is co-producing a documentary with Kermit called “Treme Life“, focusing on his childhood in the Lower Ninth Ward, where he was born, and the Treme neighborhood, where he came of age and discovered jazz and traditional New Orleans music. (To join Facebook fan page, click RIGHT HERE.)

In the course of our correspondence, I ultimately managed to weasel my way into James’s project as an editor, and I’m now in the midst of cutting the film with my brother-in-law and co-editor. It’s kinda like the sweetest gig ever. Yet it’s not a gig at all. It’s hours and hours of work, with no real compensation in sight. But it’s an opportunity to help tell the story of a man who is truly a living legend. A man who will be revered in New Orleans every bit as much as Louis Armstrong or Professor Longhair, long after he second lines right off this mortal coil.

Essentially, the work that I’m doing gives me the chance to say “Thanks!” to a guy who’s music has brought me such joy. Without Kermit, there is no Rebirth Brass Band. Without Kermit, there is no “Drop Me Off in New Orleans”. Without Kermit, there is no Vaughan’s on a Thursday night. And I swear, I literally dream about going to Vaughan’s on a Thursday night at least once a week, if not more.

So seriously, how cool is this shit, people? I am blessed. Fo shiggity.

Below is the trailer for “Treme Life,” which I can take zero credit for since it was created before we joined the team. But as you’ll see, it captures the essence of Kermit, from the barbecue grill to the microphone. And below that is the video for his Christmas tune, “A Saints Christmas”.

So, in conclusion, Happy Birthday, Mr. Ruffins. I’m looking forward to the premier party. And long may you swing.

It was August, 23rd 09
I was sitting on Martha’s Vineyard Shore
When the wind, suddenly picked up
And I heard the skies begin to roar
The first thing I saw was a helicopter
As it landed next to me on the ground
Then the secret service men jumped out
And proceeded to pad me down

It seems I’m sitting on the beach
With a man named Obama
He turns to me and says “Yes We Can”
But on this beach, He say’s my lotion’s no good
Cause this type ain’t the one for to give me a tan La La

After 2 days, sunning on the beach
My skin was still white as a ghost
After 3 days, lying in the sand
I didn’t even begin to roast
Then The President came up to me
And gave me what I needed the most

It seems I’m sitting on the beach
With a man named Obama
He turns to me and says “Yes We Can”
This lotion is the one that you need
Cause your lotion ain’t the one for to give you a tan La La

On the 4th day I put his lotion on
And my skin began to turn brown
Then I heard The President speak to me
As I slowly turned around
He said the world can be a better place
Like a tan on a summer beach
For all of us to get along
The lessons we learn are the ones that we teach

It seems I’m sitting on the beach
With a man named Obama
He turns to me and says “Yes We Can”
I believe the world can be that better place
Cause there ain’t no way for me to give up my plan La La

Oh I was born on the poor side of the Blarney Stone
When I was a wee lad, the town folk left me alone
I had no direction as my life roamed the countryside
Until one night I heard that Irish Rock and Roll Lullaby

There upon the meadow were four shadows on a rock
Playing homemade instruments that made the four winds stop
Swaying to and fro they didn’t see me rest upon the loon
As I laid in the tall grass, listening to their tune

Now it’s time for all God’s children to rest their weary heads
As we play our merry song, in the style of The Grateful Dead
Two mandolins and hobbit’s flute, from Frodo I’ve been told
And holding down the beat is Lingo, on a pot of gold

Close your eyes my little ones as we sing you all to sleep
If you listen to our music, it’s just like counting sheep
Catch the moonlight in your hand and wish the night goodbye
As we sing and play for you, an Irish Rock and Roll Lullaby

I listened there for hours as they played their elfish tune
Mesmerized by all the sights and sounds cast upon the moon
I snuck back there every night to hear them play that song
As I played my Air Mandolin, they made me sing along

Then one night I got to close to the four lads in the grass
They all stopped and looked my way, I had to act real fast
I shouted to the heavens, ” I’m a but a child who can not sleep you see
Oh how I wish that someone would sing a lullaby to me.”

Now it’s time for all God’s children to get a little sleepy
Unless you’re the one who is here every night, that is kind of creepy
We see you in the grass singing and playing your air mandolin
If you want to help us out, what we need is some woodwind

So close your eyes and come up and be a member of the band
Listen to our music and you will understand
Catch a falling star and wish your mortal life goodbye
You can sing and play with us, an Irish Rock and Roll Lullaby

So I picked a four-leaf clover and a box of Lucky Charms
Caught a leprechaun and bad him well without any harm
Washed away my troubles in a nearby Irish Spring
Gave away the living world just to dance and sing

You will find me every night on the meadow’s side
Once where there was four shadows, now there is but five
Dancing back and forth, singing as happy as can be
If you want to join the band, just repeat after me

Oh, Now it’s time for all God’s children to rest their weary heads
As we play our merry song in the style of the Grateful Dead
Two mandolins and a Hobbit’s flute, from Frodo I’ve been told
And Lingo has some woodwinds to keep beat with his Pot of Gold

Close your eyes my little ones as we sing you all to sleep
If you listen to our music, it’s just like counting sheep
Catch the moonlight in your hand and wish the night goodbye
As we sing and play for you, an Irish Rock and Roll Lullaby

another song-by-song review, enjoy. this one will be longer, as this album has (gasp!) 12 songs. New by Peaches, I feel cream.

track uno. serpentine. awesome bass, oh oh makes me horny. classic whispering/moaning, but we are going to assume that this will be a constant in this album, k? haha, “serpentine, never straight line, serpentine”, good one peachy. sometimes she says some random words in different languages. this song is chill, not too dancy. more like… let’s have sex and probably sex with knifes. but it does have the potential of remixing, and becoming very dancable. ends subtely. thumbs up.

track dos. talk to me. oh oh oh wow some awesome vocals right off the bat. is that her? shit. no, can’t be. she’s… really good. holy shit, the voice is so emotive and angry and awesome. wow wow wow i had no idea peaches could sing this well. it’s a bit more rock and roll than usual. SHIT I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG. i’m just going to enjoy it. good luck. thumbs up!

track tres. lose you. good beats, but dancey in a kind of kylie minogue kind of way. really soft vocals… so far. kind of romantic, not a lot of dildo fucking in the butt. new directions for peaches, i see. hey i’m kind of bored. it’s a bit monotone, the energy is too low. she’s whisper-singing, also new for her. lalala, i am bored. thumbs in the middle, trying to decide. this is background music.

track cuatro. more. yeeeeah old skool peaches beats. grittt. about partying. and sex. that’s how i like you honey. oh oh so sexy, shit. i might have to masturbate after this. oh the bass, this is going to sound great next year. “seems you got a bit more than you asked for”… always the case, bitches. there’s also some like, laser/star wars sounds shooting in and out… which i enjoy immensely. yeah, this is fuck music. oh the ending is fantasssssstic. i want to dance and have sex AT THE SAME TIME. thumbs up.

track cinco. billionaire. electro beats… jesus, she’s rapping. no. i don’t enjoy. also, i don’t endorse unsafe sex (“ride me bareback, i don’t care”). oh these are some bad rhymes. “fuck you like a billionaire”… i’m pretty sure billionaires suck at fucking, because they are CEOs and shit or bill gates. guest rapper… i have no idea who this is. she also sounds like gwen stefani in the chorus. thumbs down.

track seis. i feel cream. more whisper-singing. but pretty good beats. it’s pretty flat for some time, and then peaches comes alive again. haha, “play you like a guitar hero”… i love her. yeah, the second half is better better better than the first half. i can’t wa-hait for the remixes of this shiznizz. thumbs up.

track siete. trick or treat. yeah, i love this song. “you lick my crow’s feet”. haha what? oh, the lyrics are genius. this is the best song in the album. also, the video is fantastic. i posted it a few days back. never go to bed without a piece of raw meat. NEW MOTTO. reminds me of i u she, which is by far my fave peaches song. it has a lot of awesome different elements, very diverse, enjoyable, not boring at all. thumbs up, by both roger and ebert.

track ocho. show stopper. club song, but is the best growing slower proressively? it’s weird. but i like it a lot. the distorted guitars are pretty sexy. it’s a little punk, a little dance, a little grrl rioter, a little B52s. the lyrics are megamelomaniatic. is that word? it is now. short. thumbs up!

track nueve. mommy complex. another good club song, a little housy. the lyrics are sick, and incestuous. is this an ode to like… cougars? it’s kind of funny considering peaches used to be a kindergarten teacher. oh there you go, she talks about school. i still like it, regardless. housy and industrial! thumbs up.

track diez. mud. she sings again, but less powerfully. still in the industrial stuff. i like. but definitely not a dance song. yeah the instrumentals are good, but meh. thumbs playing with themselves.

track once. relax. sexy back swirly beat. ooh i like the echo-y thing. quite current with the hiphop-little-wayne stuff going on right now. a song to smoke weed to for those who hate reggae, myself included. thumbs lazily up.

track doce. take you on. the repeating spoken lyrics she’s famous for are here. literally for two minutes there are no other words but “take you on”. she references amy winehouse i think. i don’t really know what’s that about. regardless of the good instrumentals… thumbs down.

all in all… yeah, bit torrent it, you’ll need it for survival.

I was walking on the beach on at summer dog day
With a tank top shirt that had a glow
The wind was whipping up the smell of the boardwalk
That’s when my hunger started to grow

I had to find something that would quench my soul
An answer to that hot August day
Then I saw a sign that would solve all my prayers
And this is what it had to say

We have fresh
Raspberry Ice Cream
It’s not store-bought, it’s all home churned
Raspberry Ice Cream
It will cool you down from your sunburn
Raspberry Ice Cream
I think I want some

So I stood in line in the hot, humid store
And took my shirt off to cool down
When I went to order the counter girl looked my way
And pointed to a sign that made me frown

It said ” We reserve the right to refuse anyone,
not because of color, race or religion.
We sell our ice cream to the whole wide world
But not if you look like Tank Top Tim.”

They sold fresh
Raspberry Ice Cream
But they told me that I would get none
Raspberry Ice Cream
Cause I was two-tone from walking in the sun
Raspberry Ice Cream
I still want some

I was so desperate to get some of that ice cream
Even gave a kid a $100 dollars to get me a cone
Before I had a chance to tell him what size I wanted
He just took my cash and ran and left me all alone

Then I had an idea and went next door
Had a few tattoos put on parts of my upper body
And when i got back to the front of the line
I ask the counter girl if she liked my new red blazing NBA jersey

I got my
Raspberry Ice Cream
I bought enough to buy out the store
Raspberry Ice Cream
And tomorrow I think I will go back for more
Raspberry Ice Cream
I really like it

Raspberry Ice Cream
Raspberry Ice cream
