This book does not only provide a fascinating insight into Majid’s life but also his raw, honest and sometimes eye opening emotional roller coaster career. It is a personal account, and his brutal honesty regarding different nationalities and those of his own country is recounted so well. A lot of clips from his columns but never mind!

I couldn’t put it down. The English, although not perfect (hey, even English have trouble!) is easy to read and paints a picture as though you are there yourself

Majid Al Suleimany’s exciting new book is “A Cry for Help!”

“A Cry for Help!” examines the management styles of Arabian Gulf Corporation Council countries

MUSCAT, Oman – Author Majid Al Suleimany exposes the increasing extremism, fundamentalism and radicalization in management styles and employees’ receptions and reaction in his new book “A Cry for Help!”(published by Trafford Publishing)

With over 35 years of human resource experience in Oman and with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Al Suleimany digs deep into the Arab office environment. Suleimany spins “a frank, honest and open book exposing the increasing lack of ethics, principles, professionalism and tolerance in the office environment.”

“A Cry for Help!” focuses on the particular type of management that is being used in the Arab workplace while explaining the context and perspectives in the work environment. He goes on to explain what is peculiar, special, or particular to that work in the context of, and in comparison to, management styles of other nations.

About the Author

Majid Al Suleimany resides in Oman with his wife and four children. He has published four other books: “Psychology of Arab management!,” “The Sequel – Between Us Only!,” “Short Takes – Between Us Only!” and “Between Us Only! Book One.” He has two others in production: “Between Us Only! The Sequel Three” and “Behind the Wheel!” Al Suleimany is also a columnist for The Oman Daily Observer. He has worked in management, human resources and as a consultant for over 35 years in Oman.

Trafford Publishing, an Author Solutions, Inc. author services imprint, was the first publisher in the world to offer an “on-demand publishing service,” and has led the independent publishing revolution since its establishment in 1995.
It Is Happening Again!

The place is in Tripoli in Libya.

The people are running wildly inland from the shores – in acute panic, shock and fear – and screaming out to the Al Jazeera Television News Crew – “See the seas! See the seas! – in English. Then one of them says it in Arabic – the same thing.

One can see the sea has turned high and rough into high waves and torrents – the same that we have seen forming in Tsunamis.

Then I can hear this voice saying – more telepathically – this is a punishment from Allah (God) for people who kill their leaders – who should be respected – and for leaders that kill their own people in cold blood – because they want change and to be free.

Highly explosive material. But it is in a dream. Almost like in 3D.As if you are part of the scene.

This is quite an improvement from the last one – but that one was not in a dream – like this one. See that one below.

Wednesday July 25th 2012 At The Workplace! – Outlook! The Month of Forgiveness! Indeed the most hono

Wednesday July 25th 2012

At The Workplace! – Outlook!

The Month of Forgiveness!

Indeed the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah (God) is the one with the most Taqwa (Righteousness/God Consciousness) – Surah Hujaraat – 49.13.

Allah’s special mercy comes on the families (nation) that are united, harmonious and peaceful – especially in Taqwa and in the Fasting Month – The Hadith.

This Ramadhan I got a nice message for the month from one person. The number was not registered in my Mobile – but I decided to accept the nice message and send one back in reciprocity! Unfortunately, the person decided ‘to spoil it all’ by asking me if I really knew from whom the message came from? And asking me to ‘keep trying to guess’! I politely declined ‘the offer’ – and had decided to just register the person as ‘Sender Good Ramadhan Message’!

That was not enough for the person – because he did not give up! I guess the reason was ‘he or she thought I would be very much surprised to receive this kind of message from him! It seemed to me that the person ‘was keen to be found out’ – so we can take it off from that level! But if you are not telling – who am I to push you to come forward and tell me?

It dawned on me that this could be a person that I had crossed with and upset in the past – and he is making a subtle move to come forward – and say it in his own ways and styles!

The day before Ramadhan we had a family get together – because it was a long time since we had one together as one whole family – and also to celebrate some of the children finalists good examination results – and one or two who had got promoted – and of course with a new car to show the rest of us too – with the old bangers going over 7 years now – and cannot afford a new one still yet!

Frankly, I try to be ‘my level best’ in these types of social gatherings nowadays – and just to show you how bad things have now become in society – because definitely there will be one or two determined to get you pissed off and upset – for just some rice and morsels – and make the rest of your day to be upset and to be annoyed!

The thing that they can easily find fault to upset and annoy you is in your passion of writing – and nitpicking minor things to be made mountains from molehills on a driving pursuit and purpose to do their bit. They like to call it as ‘constructive criticism and feedback’ – but if you ask him to explain himself clearly in more details – than just the one sentence or two he picked out of context – he fails miserably!.

But then he will say to you that you are now becoming over sensitive – and the age element has definitely kicked in – for you to behave like this way! The question to ask here – if this can come within – who needs enemies outside? A famous Arabic expression says – rightly too! – A thousand enemies outside the house are better than one within!

Things have gone so bad nowadays – because at Family get-together times even – you get people – after years and years of being sidelined and being marginalized – have now received promotions that have gone to their heads – being contemptuous, cynical, satirical and pompous! Looking down on others the lesser lucky and fortunate in life!

Like I always like to say – a few more Baizas has changed the person completely – in an adverse – and negative way! That is why if I am not invited to any social gathering nowadays – it is not ‘sour apples’ – but honestly – I feel that the person has done me a good deed indeed!

A friend of mine had sent me this saying – which I will share with you! The most testing time for a woman is when her husband has gone poor and broke – and for a man is when he has become rich and famous! He gives me his own life story as proof of what he is saying here – when he became astute poor –and with losing his position and job! With children even – and or no children either!

So I messaged to the person – There is something that you perhaps do not know about me! I always try my level best to avoid conflicts as much as I possibly can! I also can promise you that I never cast (throw) the first stone either! But after cautioning you after several trespass and interferences – I can turn nasty to even shock you! I then come down charging – like a bull in a glass shop! Admittedly, some may even say – his reactions outdo his silence and patience at the outset. Taking it from the 90/10 principle of reacting to situations!

As a Writer, Author and Columnist – I will be naïve and stupid not to realise that I have upset and annoyed people – and will continue to do so – so long as I keep writing on in my life! Even if I decide to stop – I will upset those who want me to continue – and even write much more than before! Like Louis IV had said – Whichever side I take or whatever I will do, I will still be blamed by the other side!

In all my life and in my pursuits – I have always aimed to change the things I can do so by myself if I can do so – and if not – speak or write about it! In weak moments – yes – I have gone to the lowest levels in Religion – of saying – I am against this – but I am afraid – and have now joined in silence the Silent Majority!

Like the unfairness and injustice being faced now by me – but there is nothing that I can do on my own – though have talked about it several times in my columns here!

In the spirit, graciousness and kindness of the Holy Month – I ask for forgiveness for those that I may have upset and annoyed – and even by default and inadvertently! I still believe to speak the truth always as I see it – and ready to change my mind if shown and or convinced otherwise!

But I also feel deep in my heart and in conviction – body and spirit – that only a person that really cares, feels and does not want ‘things to go bad and or wrong’ – will tell you exactly what he thinks – for the general good, remedy, corrections, peace, harmony and for future generations, history, legacy – and for our destiny too. In that way you will forgive me too – for I will hardly change!

F.30 The 7 Cars Accident Pile Up

If it was someone else who was telling me the story – I might have perhaps not have believed it! But then you see this had happened to me! My car was the 6th car in the pile up. The 7th car was the one smashing into my MPV! Multi-Purpose Vehicle!

I heard the screech of brakes as the car behind me tried to stop. It was raining – and the road was wet and slippery. As I started hearing the brake screech – instinctively, intuitionally and impulsively I had slammed the brakes on of the stalled car.

It was a miracle that I had missed the last 5 cars. It all had started with one of the 7 cars involved with this pick up swerving from the outer lane to the inner lane. It seemed that he was still sleepy – it was morning in the Holy Month of Fasting of Ramadhan.

The car he hit on the left hit other 4 cars – resulting in a pile up! My MPV was the 6th car – and I tried my level best to avoid hitting the other cars in front of me – though I was at 100 kph – but do not forget that the road was wet and slippery – as it usually happens when it starts to rain in Oman!

The car that hit me was a Japanese saloon car – my MPV was American. They build these cars with steel – hard steel with rods on! Yet though I knew my car was going to be hit at any minute with this fast coming car that I could see in the rear view mirror – I was thrown into the steering – but the airbag did not go off. Probably because I was hit from the back? Lucky for me I had the seat belts on!

Imagine the Japanese car was written off after this! A person from PDO who witnessed the accident from the other side of the road – and who recognised my green MPV – told everyone in PDO – I think Majid is dead! The way the behind car crushed into him – it will be a miracle if he was alive! News spread around fast – Majid has died in the accident! One said – don’t tell the wife till we are pretty sure!

Can you imagine that the driver that hit me came out alive – though injured? I looked at the destroyed car – and really wondered how he came out alive from that car? My behind MPV was a total wreck with the impact received! He later told me – he was changing a cassette in this fast lane – and saw the accident too late! A cassette change that can kill too?

Yet the MPV was a new model introduced in the market. I wondered aloud what would have happened had I not a stronger vehicle? And though by nature I vow not to drive when it starts to rain – I made exceptions because I was hand carrying some important Company documents that I wanted Oman Air to deliver to Marmul interior desert operation location that day!

The Officer at the airport had already heard that I had died at the accident. That is the way I try to be job responsible – to even deliver the documents myself for fast delivery at risks of rain – and accidents. I could have sent by normal mail – but that is M for you!

Nobody complimented me – nor say anything nice to me for this proactive action. Though I had suffered a road accident – and neck pain for quite awhile – but it was all in silence – and in vain!

My car was let go first after the Police ROP reports. The other three cars were in need of being towed out from the roads. There was a traffic jam that lasted not less than 6 hours.

This accident spot at this Sarooj Petrol Station is always a black car accident spot. Many accidents always happen there. It is a jinxed spot – or if you believe in these things – Genie spot!

*****

F.31 Because You Always Do Good!

I was moving towards this Petrol Station when this Western couple got out of their car – with both hugging me. What gives? Or what’s up doc? They shouted in unison – you are alive? I said Yes – God Is Great!

Then they said to me – we heard one person – with similar surname – had died in a road accident. He was driving a truck – and wearing slippers at the time! They had confused him with me. There was a tear in the woman’s eyes.

They then reminded me of a good deed I did for that family. I had actually forgotten! Then they said – Because you always do good things to people – that is why! We are so happy to see that you are alive!

Best Regards,

The Singing Quatro!

The Changing Life Ways!

On Thursday this week my family and I had celebrated my 64th birthday. A simple thing – and all at home – with my family members only! The thing that moved me the most is to see my grandchildren singing this special Arabic song for parents for me! It was followed by a Happy Birthday song in English. For a few minutes, I felt just like the VIPS that would feel in a grand parade! Coming to their generation, some did put in compliments in Facebook. Also some messages came in via Twitter – and in the professionals’ website of LinkedIn.

The point to make here is this. I had covered this topic in my second Arab Management book titled – A Cry For Help! The book was published in February 2009 – well before all the troubles and problems came to our side of the world. Some had said to me that the book was a sort of prophesy, omen and prediction of what was going to come ahead – and that more people at least in decision making and the leadership should have read the book!

It was not my mistake – but I did send the book out – and to try to make the distress call in crying for help! Would things have really have changed if more people had read my book? Personally, I do not think so! Just see the things still happening now – even after just poor Mubarak was sent to a life-term jail sentence! And even after all the other things before that. We are very good ‘and blessed’ in being just indifferent and care-the-less – and with a very short memory span too!

We still have not learnt that threats – and trying to put in trouble one – will only be short-lived – because once things like this have started – there is nothing that can stop or prevent the trend from continuing – till it goes full cycle and till completion. This is not a washing machine – which you can just switch off the machine to stop it going full cycle. Or as has been said – what goes around – does come around – even if it may take longer time to do so!

Whatever one may feel, still this Mubarak was an Arab presiding leader being sent to jail! I could not help feeling sorry for him – despite all the things that have happened – when for two hours he refused to get out from the helicopter that was sending him to jail – and crying uncontrollably and profusely that ‘you are all now sending me to jail today – and have forgotten all my contributions and so on stuff’! The crunch being how things can turn nasty and unpredictable in life’s pursuits!

Keep remembering that the incident quoted here in my book was over 4 years ago! In the Introductory Chapters, this is what I had written – Quote –

It then struck me how fast and how much things have now changed in The Work Front – especially in relationships between Omanis (Locals) and Expatriate Staff – especially Non Muslims – and how much the gap was widening between the two – though acting and pretenses continued of politeness, courtesy and welcome.

There was now growing extremism, fundamentalism and radicalisation in the workplaces that I had never seen before – especially here where I had always prided myself that we were a tolerant, moderate, give-and-take, live-and-let-live society and always kind, welcoming and accepting esteeming and respectful to our ‘invited guests’ in our country!

My simple error – if you call it that – to invite non-Muslims to the Mosque (Masjid) seemed inadvertently to expose the inevitable differences etc. – unwanted and uncalled for – and I think unneeded differences – to come out and show its ugly head!

However, two months later I summarily did quit the place after being singled out and insulted by a British Expatriate – in an Email copy to all the Staff – and the CEO fellow Expatriate siding with him – against a National – and yet in Human Resources too for that matter! – unquote.

What it all confirmed to me was this getting a bashing from my now increasingly being radicalized and fundamentalised our own people – despite facial appearances – and realizing that even in our own country – even people like me who want to live and let live – and moderate in views – are singled out – and ‘guests in our own offices’! But the dirtier and murkier picture was lines being drawn between the locals – and the external Management – and the docile weak own Top Management to allow such things to happen. Nothing that happened after this surprised me anymore!

But whoever is the CEO – whether local or expatriate – believe me – nothing has changed much – if you have been reading my recent articles in this column. That really scares me to the core now – with this indifference, care-free, arrogant, haughty, conceited and proud focuses, attitudes and approaches in the Offices particularly now!

History had repeated itself this time – by some people being very cross with me! These are not our ways for such celebrations – and we thought you would lead by example – or we had higher hopes and expectations from you – but you have let us down badly’! The scarier part is this all coming now from the younger ones – and our future leaders!

What else more can I say now? Take Care!

Good News!

My Books in Arab Management are now in ebooks format! See below letter from The Publishers Trafford in USA. The book also A Cry For Help! had been converted last month to ebooks.

I believe this is an achievement fror a Omani Author, Writer and Columnist to have his books in Arab Management (in English) recognised and established due to the books demand worldwide. Please note that Trafford Publishing USA had converted the books free for this Author due to many requests worldwide .

This Psychology book is sold out in Oman bookshops. Sadly they will not order directly and want me to order the books for them! And I am just broke…!

And that is the Oman (Arab) tragedy for all openly to see! I can see similar lack of support for my next book in Road Safety book novel type – see posting here.

Will we ever change? I do not think so! If I was an expatriate and wrote about Omani Castles and or Butterflies – all of us will come forward to help – especially if it is a HER!

Allah Kareem. God Is Great. Amin. Amen.

Some Observations! – Behind The Wheel! –

The New Road Safety Book!

There is something that has continuously puzzled and baffled me is this attitude of writing to people with your request or suggestion – and people completely ignore you – as if you do not exist! One is not sure if it is linked or related to our famous Arabic expression that ‘the best answer to a rude and arrogant person is complete silence’!

Or is it more linked and associated with just plain ‘contemptuous, arrogant, proud and conceited’ approaches and attitudes that some have? – ‘Hey you – listen you! You have no right to address me with anything – because you are of lower status to me – and do not have any rights of any kind if you compare yourself to me’ In actual fact you simply have no rights to address me with anything. First I am more important to you – second it is only the situation that has made you to have any guts and courage to send me anything – the audacity of it all!

Would these pictures not move you?

Images For Demonstration Purposes Only.

When I wanted to publish my first book I went around asking for sponsorship to all the VIPs I knew – and those with money and wealth – the National Companies and Banks – but they all turned me down! Even Regional Associations that have supported foreigners – but not their so-called brethren! It was very hurtful and painful! I was about bto give up – until this one National Company came to rescue – and all because the Chairman liked ‘the way you are fighting for the underdog!’ – his own words – to be exact!

I did not bother that much with the other 4 books – including the Arab Management books – though admittedly there was a vain attempt in the beginning – since I never ‘learn my lesson’ in life – as it is! The most sad and tragic thing was that even those VIPs that I had sent complimentary books did not have even the ethics and principles of saying thank you – completely against everything in our Religion – and our customs, traditions, culture and heritage! It took only some of the Expatriates to respond positively – though even some did not.

Perhaps some thought that I would be so upset – and be so angry that I will go and burn up all the books – and stop writing immediately. They got something else coming – if they had thought like this!

When I started the idea of writing this book, I thought things wouldl have now changed. But not really! Like I had said many times – in some places and people – they will never change – even if the ground below them crumbles below their feet. I will spare you making the usual references to add to this – because it is of no use – and is just wasted time, efforts and energies from my part!

Anyway – even if this book should have attracted more support this time – the book is proceeding well. See what people are already saying. At least this time three National Companies are assisting in providing material, stories, incidents, back-ups – and others. Including from some willing to share their stories – their books and websites – for me to quote and make reference to! Because they were all drawn to the noble, worthy and National cause. Muscat Daily also supported me by writing about the book – as appeared in Page 2 of April 28th 2012 – see also posted in www.majidall.com

I cannot thank them all well enough! Included in my book’s Indebtedness and Acknowledgements.

Best Regards,

Majid Al Suleimany.

P.S. I had used my own column to write about the book in The Features – The Oman Daily Observer – also posted at www.majidall.com

The Committee Has Not Met Yet!

http://main.omanobserver.om/node/92399

See also scanned copy here as has appeared in The Oman Daily Observer of April 25th 2012

Still Nothing Has Changed Much – Despite All The Rhetoric!

If Moses were a Committee – The Israelites would still be in Egypt today!

Nothing you tell these people will have any effect on them – Ali Fazari – Syrian Artist and Activist.

In hindsight and again speaking from my own personal experiences and in retrospect – I wish to reiterate this point – that though we have seen some initiations and improvements in the citizens’ rights and freedom – still nothing has changed much on the grounds and in reality.

The problems are the same in pushing them forward into action, reality and into practice – rather than them being minutes of meetings – and if even filed for records first of all in the first instance. There is need for real movement into action, propelling, push, dynamism and pragmatism in moving them forward – into practice and into reality. Time is not in our side – in essence and or in favour – before we all get bogged down into being reactive ‘fire fighting’ – and further ‘red tape, bureaucracy and inaction’!

It is alright to put news of improvements and changes for the better in the media – but what is the use of all of them – if they are still not practiced – or excuses given for delays and procrastinations – as is the usual case? I hope that Readers can remember of what I wrote before of those working within the system – the ‘old guards syndrome’ – to prevent and or delay changes. These peoples need to be exposed – and kicked out – and as lessons to others.

This is also the real truth still! The citizen cannot still win – or very few isolated cases in success – against the public departments and bodies. This is even if you have a case where if things were really practiced and put in action – the citizen SHOULD win in case of dispute scenario. But he will simply not win. Adversely, the same public body can take you for action – and or sue you in courts for the ‘same case and situation’ – for as many times as they want – and the case will still be heard – and nothing can stop them! Even if you cannot draw blood from a stone!

You go to the Public Officials that you know to hope for solace and intervention – and they are obligated to do so by their authorities, power, control and auspices dominion – if not that you know them well and hope Wastah will kick in – but does not! Simply no one will ever lift a finger to help you – or they turn away from you as if you do not exist- and even if you try to contact then face to face – let alone by emails and by phone? Even if you want to fight against the Big Cats for your rights or that company of yours that is closing down – you end yet again as The Loser!

How long these things will go on – before something breaks up – or blows up in front of our faces? The truth and in actual fact – the things at stake and at issue are in reality not really big unsolvable issues – but involve the usual uncaring, care-free, no-interest, cannot-be-bothered-the least approaches and attitudes. What if really big things were at stake? One shudders – and does not want even want to start thinking on this! Heads need to roll – before things can really improve – otherwise it is a lost cause – and everyone will end as the loser!

Even if you have given up and do not want to fight your case – because you know you will lose again as the citizen – and complied by what ‘as has been thought as fair and equitable – does not matter if you think differently – who cares? If you follow up your case – so you can be in the clear – and restore your personal freedom and rights – you get the same excuse – The Committee has still not met yet to discuss and or finalise your situation. You are not the only one – so just wait! This is said to you more in annoyance and in anger – rather than in trying to cool you down – or making you understand about the situation – and in letting you know about the results.

There are things I said in 1980s that now have really happened in reality and on the grounds too. Yet I was given all the labels – including having chips on his shoulders! – A big mouth – a trouble-maker – needs to be stopped! – and so on!

My problems are that I care and feel a lot – and want things to work out – and not go bad! Instead, I always end up as the victim of circumstances of my own making for speaking up and making a stand – and the usual at the end loser! Whilst those who do not care or bother get rewarded – and acknowledged – and given more and more – because of their lack of caring and in indifference.

Twice I have given up writing anymore – only to persuaded to come back in again. Of course, I cannot deny that I need the money – if even after 35 years of dedicated services, loyalty and feelings of caring are simply wasted – because I cannot touch much my own pension for the very same aforementioned reasons.

I can now understand and appreciate why people turn to Religion in despair and in giving up hope – instead of the few like Mohamed Buazizi of Tunisia in self-immolation. I simply cannot understand and comprehend why people are so mean and dastardly to each other – and not wanting to change – despite all the changes around us now!

I am really tired now in continuing writing about these same issues – and I am still in the tunnel – and no hopes for to see the light at the end of the tunnel – if ever that will be so!

TAKE CARE!

April 9th 2012

NEW BOOK – The Road Safety Book – Novel Type – In simple English.

I am now writing my 6th book on Road Safety Stories.

The Book Plan – To write Short Emotional Stories that have happened to people because of Road Accidents! The book will be a novice first time type ever written in Oman as in a reading novel type format – written in the simplest of English – as it is envisaged that many of the Readers English is a second language (or third) after Arabic – and to make it easy for them to understand and comprehend – taking into account the importance of the subject to the increased number of road accidents and fatalities in Oman.

IMAGES FIR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY!

Writing has always been in my blood and my hobby and passion.

Road Safety Article – 1990s

I wrote this article for Times of Oman in May 1994 titled – Stray Thoughts on Oman Traffic – and reproduced by PDO Al Fahal Magazine June 11 1994 titled – Drive Safely for the Sake of Family and Loved Ones! – See appended below

A Peoples’ Stories – All True Cases.

.The story must be about road accidents and had happened in Oman mainly.

To write about Road Traffic Accidents in a book format and using simple English language for all to understand and appreciate.

To put catching titles per story such as :-

Newly wedded died on road accident

Mother is still grieving!

Grandmother left alone in the house!

Utility bill syndrome

Full Family lost in the accident!

Bad timing to travel after midnight!

Wrong Job Relief causes agony!

Fast trip ended shortly!

No more singing in the rain!

Mother – Do Not Cry For Me!

You should have been firm with me Mum – now I am gone!

To make it interesting and true. And things that we have seen in reality happening in front of our very eyes.

To give accident account, possible causes and lessons learnt.

As the writer will have the full rights to lay out the story according to the flow of information

Ask people who have No Objections to write their own true stories with photos and blogs.

Include photos of as many car accidents and lessons to learn! Preferably in colour format.

We need to write this book in view of the high road fatalities and accidents – and starting with schools.

The idea can be expanded with a picturesque book for Primary Schools (Arabic also) in the future – but it will have to be in corporation with others (Arabic not that god for writing up!)

Any others

B How The Idea Originated!

It came some time back from an Omani General Manager (and a very good personal friend!) and whose Executive Secretary and the whole family perished in a road accident two years ago!

I knew the late girl well – see sample story appended.

This idea was given to me also by a good Indian Fan of mine as something worthwhile to consider to do with my Writing Skills and Experiences and taking it up from the Five Books already published by me.

See sample story here

C Issues

There are many issues to handle first – like people willing to talk first with you and their willing for their stories to be told? But with the right approach and tactics this can be approached in the right way for success.

Otherwise we will not use names but create our own names, initial, nome-de-plumes and pseudonyms

D Summary

The book can take off very well. I have a strong feeling on this one!

To be published in Oman as we may ask sponsors also from others like PDO, ROP, Newspapers etc – but the lesser the better! I want to own full rights and in publishing too.

I am looking for financial support and in monetary help and in financial more sponsorship.

Also if you know of any stories as above to share with me and other Readers

Or if people willing to come forward to share their own stories – as lessons for others to learn!

Or any views or suggestions that you may possibly have.

Let us not forget life is not permanent or forever – but we will be remembered for what we have done and contributed in this world SADAKA JARIYAH

Always cheerful and helpful – people flocked in and out of her Office just to visit and talk to her! Always a kind word and gesture to everyone – if it was the last sandwich which she had to keep for herself – she would offer it to you and she would go without!

The old man went up the stairs to the offices as he was afraid of using the lift! He was a very angry man – he had received a wrong electricity bill that went to over a Thousand Omani Rials! His electricity was also disconnected! He had travelled all the way to The Head Office from the Interior – because he did not receive any cheers from the Branch.

He was shouting and addressing me – I had come in temporarily as The HR Consultant! How can my bill be so high? Last time I paid was less than OMR 20 (US Dollars 60)? I live with my wife and my two sons only in the small house!

Hearing the commotions, RAW stepped out from her Office. Abuuiiy! (Father!) Please come and sit down. She brought him water and coffee. Relaxed, the old man started crying! He was ashamed of himself – for shouting so loudly to so many others – and ‘making just a nuisance’ of himself! Do not cry Father she said to him. I will call the GM out of the meeting to see you just now!

Do not worry – she assured him – I will take care of you! And she did…. the old man got his electricity bill cancelled and the electricity returned – and a company car to take him home to his village 250 kilometers away. RAW also gave him Company Complimentary gifts – that is RAW for you – always caring and feeling for others! As a Consultant even for me – this was a great learning experience in kindness, care, feelings and in humanity – all RAW!

Wednesday February 9th 2011.

I was calling this good friend of mine a CEO of a National Company – and he gave me the ‘shock of my life’ to tell me that his Executive Secretary – and a First Class High Profile lady in my books had died as another casualty figure (statistics) just recently – after asking him how she was and having not received any emails from her for quite a while. I had covered this poor lady in My Books as one great person who had always stood by me in offering me support, kind words and in encouragement in my books.

I had never expected to cry again! For me I try best to hold back my tears very much. But failed miserably this time! I still fail whenever I remember her. This poor lady was amongst one of the ‘casualty figures and statistics’ that we read in the newspapers every day and week – without abating an eyelid – as the ‘usual stories’ we read in the newspapers. Or the usual pun – so what else is new?

I also did read this article by one Omani Columnist in the other newspaper titled Killer roundabout’ rings alarm bells in Mahdah – by Fahad Al Mukrashi. Every week we see also in the newspapers about road casualty figures in the newspapers – but as usual in the coming story we never imagine or visualize that it could be someone we know well or related to.

It seemed that an Omani family of 5 adults and 5 children had decided to get into a saloon car and drive all the way to Abu Dhabi in UAE. They decided to have lunch there and then to return on the same day. At 21:30 hrs, the father of the family perhaps overlooked the Mahdah round about and caught by surprise – he panicked and braked sharply – and the car rolled over several times. Six members of the family died immediately but the father escaped with minor injury because he was wearing a seat belt and was awake and alone behind the wheels.

This is one girl that I really liked and admired – and was always a great fan and supporter of me. She was always encouraging and supportive – of me personally – my books and my writings. The happiest time she was when I dedicated some of her comments in my books and giving her complimentary copies.

She was always sending me nice warm supportive messages – like cheering your day or to make you smile messages. These always used to cheer me a lot – especially when I was feeling down and sad. She was always beaming with smiles and kindness. Pretty smiles full of blossom and enlightenment!

Today I am crying again of the sad news and the gap in my life now. She was a great lady and I miss her terribly!

She had a great sense of humour and tease! Once I asked her if she was interested to get married or what – or why not still. With her usual sense of humour and wit she replied – They are waiting for me to get a higher salary first before they proposed to me! My salary is still small to them!

May Allah SWT Rest her angelic kind soul in eternal peace in this world and the eternal – and open the highest heavens for her – Amin.

Inshallah I will always pray for her so long as I will live – Amin.

www.mymajidbooks.wordpress.com

Please visit my above websites for books in Arab Management issues and aspects – and as written in English.

There are few books as such written in English and published by the Arab locals themselves – and in this style and format from a personal perspective – and in deep self conscience, criticism, analysis and review.

The First Book – Psychology of Arab Management Thinking – was published in January 2009 Context and Perspectives – Arabian Management Series.

The Second Book – A Cry For Help! – published in September 2009 – Context and Perspectives – Arabian Management Series.

A Cry For Help! sort of foretold and prophesied The Arab Awakening and Uprisings – by highlighting the issues and aspects that were also revealed by The Arab Youth cries and grievances – mainly centred on jobs, their outlooks, their participation – and need for involvement – and their future – and for their destiny and legacy.

Psychology book critically reviewed shortfalls and out comings in Arab Management – and ways and means to improve and in changes required to overcome – and to be seen as successful and in winning!

The books are written from a personal perspective and context covering the Author’s over 35 years as a Management and Human Resources Professional, Expert, Advisor and Advisor in Oman and GCC.

Books published in USA by Trafford – www.trafford.com

MY BOOKS’ SYNOPSIS

The Two Management Books

The books – especially the two Management ones – A Cry For Help! – and Psychology of Arab Management Thinking – both in Context and Perspectives – Arabian Management Series – are unique books and written in a unique and special style.

The books are about the Author as a Human Resources and Management Professional and as a Human Resources Manager, Expert and Advisor – and his experiences and exposures in his various jobs in Human Resources and Management, with particular emphasis and specialization under The Arab Managers. The books are soul searching, in deep self-analysis and critical evaluation of one’s own people in the field.

The Author extols the culture and importance of work in his religion and the pitfalls and lacklustre attitude of some of the Managers in position about the Accountabilities, Principles, Transparencies, Professionalism and Ethics of Management – and vis-à-vis their roles, aspects and responsibilities.

Very candidly the Author admits that he has no intention to harm or penalize anyone but to speak about the realities in Arab Management with a focus, desire and objective to learn, correct and remedy, if not for now, but surely for the future generations to come and for progress and prosperity. He sincerely hopes for
development and improvement in the management sphere.

The Arab countries are far richer with abundant reserves and more importantly with a healthy and young population. In spite of all these why do we lag behind others in many spheres? Is there anything wrong with the management? He says, “he is baffled and confused”. According to the author “it is not enough only to have your personal and job dedication and commitment – what is needed is complete abdication and surrender in commitment, dedication, loyalty, faithfulness etc to your work, job aspects, and responsibilities. Just your input is not enough, far more is required”.

“As Arabs, work is worshipped as if it is in praying. Arabs are also brought up to be polite, courteous and decent (at least a majority of us). Abrupt, ugly, rudeness and distort are discouraged. Also it is not easy to say NO – as part of the culture, customs, traditions and heritage. So what went wrong here – especially in management circles? Why are we behind the rest of the world, despite all our riches and resources?”

The Gulf Cooperation Council countries are some of the richest ones in the world.

Despite the Middle East holding huge gas and oil reserves of the world, very little is known about the area, in particular about Arabian Management aspects.

The author has tried to be as frank, open, forthright, honest, sincere and genuine as he can. Not that he was ever known for pulling punches. Once again, he deals with office politics of the worst kind and if the title is any indication, the new book is bound to touch a few raw nerves.

“I am pained by the stereotyping that goes all time about Omani employees. One such perception among some
expatriate managers is that Omanis are lazy”, he says. Majid Al Suleimany hastens to add that not all expatriate managers are to blame. “Most of them are impartial. But there is a tiny section that has a low opinion about
local recruits. Though they are few in numbers, the damage they cause is tremendous – as proved already now!”

The ‘Cry’ for changes is not just aimed at the expatriate, but also at the Omani employee as well. “People here
that are part of the workforce need to be more tolerant, patient and prove their capabilities and understand the other point of view. Many switch off instead of addressing a problem or a strained relationship with a manager and
this only makes matters worse.”

When one Expatriate Manager leaves, he passes on the message to his successor that the locals are difficult to deal with. Those that actually work hard (and are loyal, dedicated and committed) suffer because of this wrong stereotyping and perception

What is worrisome is that the current generation is very intolerant and can be often rebellious. If we don’t address this, there will be dangerous consequences. The Omani employees’ lot hardly improves when they get an Omani Manager, who, according to Majid Al Suleimany, with exception of few cases – “shoots at his own troops!”

“When I studied the attitudes and behavior of the Omani manager vis-à-vis expat peers, I found out that he lags
behind in his management capabilities. He ‘hates to rock the boat’ and allows the status quo when there is a problem. He finds it, generally speaking again, difficult to say No – as part of his customs, traditions and culture

The books are designed and focused for all the people to talk to each other across the borders and the boundaries – and to build up better relationships, harmony, rapport and understandings – and with the aim of building and creativity – and to avoid costly mistakes, decision-making and errors in judgement and stereo typing etc – and in special regard to the Offices environments – and in special reference to local and expatriate relationships – and even between locals and the expatriates themselves too.

To bring back smiles, joy and laughter back once again especially to the Offices environments – instead of people switching off and going to work like dummies and zombies. We have all heard of Human Resources as being one of the most important resources in an establishment – and that a happy and motivated worker is more committed – and delivers more.

Here is an Author who calls a spade a spade and faces issues head-on – and without hiding any dirt under the carpet so to speak – and has spared no one – including himself too!

The Psychology of Arab Management Thinking Book has a separate segment that deals with His Majesty Speeches and Interviews – and articles in his praise. Examples

– The Peace Prize To His Majesty; Great Statesmanship – The Royal Pardon; Heritage With Modernisation; Role of Omani Workforce Interview; and also covered others in below in B.02 – Between Us Only series books! There is one
chapter dedicated to Late His Highness Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan of UAE in fond remembrances – Let Us Not Forget Sheikh Zayed of UAE (PBUH)..

B.02

- Between Us Only! Books Series

In the Between Us Only books series – The Original Book One – The Sequel – Between Us Only! and Short Takes – Between Us Only! The Author has covered many issues that others are afraid and scared to talk about in social, economic, family and domestic and other issues – and coming out from his column of now at eight years titled similar in The Oman Daily Observer. He offers solutions that people have not even thought about – and in his simplistic way of analyzing situations and coming to workable and possible solutions.

The Author is a well-read, witty and prolific writer who often makes you laugh and sit up and think on ordinary but often neglected and not so cared matters in the society. He also writes about social evils prevalent in the society with a funny touch and lashes it with heavy blows. This unique style and way we rarely find in other writers. His prose is simple and clear and elegant His style of writing is ‘straight from the heart’ and as if speaking to you directly, using personal experiences and examples as a characteristic of his writing style.

Amongst his famous widely acclaimed read articles are – Burning Homes; Advice To A New CEO; The Land Rover Story; The Power Of The Media; The Humane Face Amongst War; Are You Afraid?; What Is Happening To Us Now; Keeping Up With The Changes; How Much Dowry For Your Daughter?; Do Not Worry – Be Happy; There Is No Urgency; Learning To Say No; Soul-Searching and Self-Analysis; No Money No Honey; Decision Making; Tragic Love Story; Why We Lie and Cheat; Why Are We So Bad?; Increasing Alcoholism Syndrome, Rebelling Teenagers, Marriages Break-ups and Divorces, Moving (Copycat) To The Bad Things, Lack of Ethics, Principles and
Professionalism and How To Apply For A Job – varied articles for different tastes and likes – covering almost everyone – from the Student to The CEO – from the child to grandparents!

“Between us Only series ” is a sincere attempt by a simple human being who cherishes his culture and traditions, and wanted it to be preserved for the coming generations.

It is a labour of love with keen observation of the society in the 21st century Arab world in particular. It also carries warnings, resentments, and fears and advises for all.
