The Beatles, Elvis, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix. What do they all have in common? They didn’t need to appear on a bloody reality TV talent show to get noticed. They had TALENT, and talent will get noticed sooner or later. If it doesn’t then it shows that the person simply isn’t good enough. Take your JLS’s and your Shayne Ward’s and send them back to stocking shelves at JD Sports where they belong.

7. Susan Boyle

She really should be part of number 8 but she wouldn’t fit. You could consider her the anti-Cheryl; Decent singer but looks like a dinner lady.

6. Kanye West

Smug, narcissistic, and a twat. I’m sure in Kanye’s mind he actually thinks he’s Jesus.

5. Westlife/Take That

I’ve lumped these two “bands” together because they’re essentially doing the same thing; They’ve all realised their bank accounts are getting empty and therefore needed a comeback, and the worst thing is it has worked. This is largely due them helping their female fans (who are all now in their 30s and even 40s) to remember how it feels to be moist between their legs.

Milking money from parents who have teenage daughters all around the world.

Much like our beloved counterparts, Fox News, we like to stick to the old adage of “We Report, You Decide”.  Above all else, we at STSOD are committed to bringing you only the truthiest in truth.  With that in mind, we would like to present our latest investigative report.

The issue in question surrounds the chorus of one My Chemical Romance track, which came under gross scrutiny earlier this month by none other than yours truly.  However, having received no response from either party and having heard nothing regarding the matter anywhere on the internet, I now bring the concern to you, dear reader.  So, without further delay, permit me to demonstrate.

Now, I present the second song in question.

“Loss Leader” by Codeine (released 1994)

Astonishing, isn’t it?  Save for some differences in tempo, the chord progressions are EXACTLY THE SAME.  Anyone who says otherwise is obviously deaf.  It could be simply dismissed as coincidence, however.  It is a simple four chord progression.  Anyone who writes music has undoubtedly taken from someone else, be it knowing or unknowing.  And of course, the My Chemical Romance version is far more ornate in comparison with regard to supplemental instrumentation, but there is no doubt in my mind as to the conclusion.

But what do you think?  Was their theft intentional or unintentional?

fun. are exactly that. With members spanning The Format, Steel Train and Anathallo you would expect greatness but on the first listen of the album I was left disappointed. To me it sounded as though they had lots of ideas but little understanding of how to harness them. This left the album sounding messy, chaotic and not unlike the artwork of this single, an explosion of colours and shapes that don’t always sit together harmoniously. On second listen I had a completely different response, but even on that original playback, ‘I’m Not As Sad (As I Used To Be)’ was the stand out track. Undoubtably this is largely down to the opening line of ‘Have you ever wondered about our old nu-metal friends and what became of them?’, but I think that the stripped down intro helped to ease me into the inevitable circus that the song was destined to become.

I put my initial disapproval of fun. down to their mass of influences. Piebald spring to mind initially, while they also seem to possess the theatrical elements of Say Anything and ‘The Black Parade’ era My Chemical Romance. This leads onto Queen and those power-rock bands of the late 70s and early 80s, and The Beach Boys also deserve a mention. And then each song seems to have their own influences, some sound like they belong on the soundtrack to a cheesy 80s romantic comedy or sitcom, some sound like they should be playing in surf shacks. ‘At Least I’m Not As Sad (As I Used To Be)’ sounds like a nursery rhyme as played by Elton John, and if that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea then you were obviously kept in a cupboard all day as a child.

For a song that seems to be all about looking back to how much fun they used to have, they sure seem to be having fun playing it. The constantly changing tempos and melodies, along with the occasional first person and colloquial lyrics, make this song seem as though it has many different voices and stories. The outcome of this is that it manages to sound exactly like one of those conversations when a group of old friends sit around chatting about the past because they’re no longer friends in the present, and it should be sad but everyone seems to be smiling.

At first I wasn’t a fan of fun. but I feel that this is largely because it doesn’t really work as background music. This song is demanding and headache inducing if you’re only partly invested in it. If you do give it the time then it is visual and seems to resemble an extremely short story or photograph of a time that you wish that you were part of, a soundtrack to a film that you can’t wait to see. I highly recommend.

It’s that time of year again where writers and editors alike scramble to piece together coherent lists of the albums that shone the brightest over the past 12 months.  Personally I find these lists extremely difficult since I always, always, always leave one or two essential albums out that for some reason didn’t cross my mind when I searched through all the dark crevices to find the music that meant the most to me.

Alternative Press took things a step further by providing a list of the Top Ten Singles of the Decade.  The results are void of many of the scene bands that grace the covers of their pages these days and reflect an era of music most prominent when I was in high school, so much so I felt the need to comment on each song and it’s relevance to me personally and how I see it fitting into to influential music.

10. Thursday – “Understanding In A Car Crash” – I am very excited to see Thursday on the list, especially this track.  Thursday changed the way music was played, incorporating elements of various styles into their post-punk poetry.  Their songs were decidedly darker than their contemporaries mostly thanks to unfortunate circumstances in vocalist Geoff Rickly’s personal life.  What they created was something so beautiful its impact is something that will forever resonate with me.  Musically, they are some of the most talented people I have ever heard, weaving intricacies around lyrics that shatter my heart, creating an eager dependency.  Their influence is something not recognized in the modern derivative of this style of music, and perhaps this is simultaneously also the biggest punk disappointment of the decade.
9. Jimmy Eat World – “The Middle” – I fell in love with Jimmy Eat World when I first discovered the album Clarity, a record that solidified so much those feelings of being lost and those confusions about love.  It’s beautiful and heart-wrenching and easily one of my favourite albums of all time.  The selected track is from their record Bleed American and arguably that song that made them a household name.  And this is a song that will also forever speak to me because it is very much about not believing in yourself, it’s about losing yourself while attempting to find yourself, but ultimately it’s really about standing up for yourself.  It’s about not giving up.  It’s about acceptance of self.  For a sad song, it’s so full of hope and sometimes hope in music is all we ever need.
8. My Chemical Romance – “Helena” – When I think of My Chemical Romance two memories come to mind.  The first of the time they played the Kool Haus with the Used, a show I attended with my good friend Shyla back when we were young and full of rockstar dreams.  While I was never religiously into My Chem, I always really liked them.  The second memory is when I attended Bamboozle in ‘07 and watching their theatrical version of their hit single “Welcome to the Black Parade” with the company of a few great girls.  This song is so terrific, with piano that reminds me of Meat Loaf songs that thus remind me of when I was young.  With an intro so epic, I have no choice but to post the video here:

7. Dashboard Confessional – “Screaming Infidelities” – Dashboard is often associated with being one of the first mainstream emo bands, but they remind me of this girl I used to know named Elizabeth.  In fact, Elizabeth introduced me to a lot of the music that later greatly influenced me as a music lover and as someone trying to make sense in a crazy world.  “Screaming Infidelities” is one of Dashboard’s most well known songs, but I much prefer “Hands Down” as their best single and “The Sharp Hint Of New Tears” as one of their best songs.  They allowed it to be okay for grown men to cry about their girlfriends, and whether you love them or hate them for this their influence and presence cannot be denied.  Not only has it helped shape an entire movement of music, but it’s also helped get a lot of losers laid.
6. The Postal Service – “Such Great Heights” – I totally agree with this song choice because this is one of the most amazing songs I know and it is always stuck in my head.  This song really put Ben Gibbard on the map as an important multi-dimensional songwriter, as his other project Death Cab for Cutie was already successful. I love the way the lyrics wind around the meanings in this song, which is constructed almost like a Weakerthans song.  This band allowed indie electronic rock to be welcomly incorporated into the punk scene.  As much as I love them, I feel the modern bands who try to encapsulate this raw, innovative energy are actually partially responsible for the decline in the Warped Tour style of punk rock, as more and more electric music seeps into the scene.  However, I do not put this blame on the Postal Service at all.
5. Taking Back Sunday – “Cute Without The ‘E’ (Cut From The Team)” – Taking Back Sunday came onto the scene as a breath of fresh air, with a new way of displaying their ideas.  Catchy, swinging lyrics and melodies laced with spite and conviction, they were in a league of their own that roped me in right away and continues to harness my love.  They too faced their share of Long Island drama, silly affairs that lead to some of the best songs and shows I know.  Behind sugary sweet vocals were battle scars that slowly crept more and more into the music, solidifying my connection to this music and warping them slowly into deeper and darker musical avenues.  This band never got the true respect they deserved, so thank you AP for including them in the list.
4. Fall Out Boy – “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down” - Back before Pete Wentz entirely ruined Fall Out Boy’s authenticity (even though he writes the majority of the lyrics), they were making waves for their unique style of song writing.  Off their debut album From Under the Cork Tree, this song encapsulates the rise of poppy emo bands in the mainstream.  Since there are way too many politics in punk rock, this band also divided people into emo lovers and punk lovers, and those who sided with this album were also often discredited.  However, their impact tells it’s own story.  They were one of the firsts to name songs with obnoxiously long titles, my favourites being “A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little more Touch Me,” “”I Slept with Someone in Fall Out Boy and All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written about Me”  and personal favourite “I’ve Got a Dark Alley and a Bad Idea That Says You Should Shut Your Mouth (Summer Song).”  They embraced their image and continue to hone it without sacrificing their ideas and visions.  I respect them for this, especially considering they do put on a stellar live show.
3. Jimmy Eat World – “Sweetness” - Also from Bleed American, I feel this spot definitely should have gone to Brand New. Brand New created a dramatic, cult following that was still apparent in their two sold-out Toronto shows this past weekend.  If TBS is on the list, BN should be too.  Brand New continually changed the way I personally looked at music in terms of development, and I mean this in both positive and negative ways.  Their earlier material wasn’t that amazing, but they still could have put “Mix Tape” or “Soco Amaretto Lime” in here.  It is hard to deny their influence, especially on Deja Entendu and the Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me. Did someone have a memory lapse?  Brand New seems like a no-brainer to me for an AP list.
2. My Chemical Romance – “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” -  Another great song by My Chem, but perhaps the people at AP couldn’t think of other bands (Tight deadlines? Too much on the Go?).  Really they have only named eight bands as the most influential over the past decade, where I feel a spot could and should have gone to acts like Propaghandi, Rise Against, AFI, Greenday or even Blink 182.  What about the Get Up Kids?  Or Bright Eyes? Or Alkaline Trio?  Or Thrice? Or Rancid??? So many influential and important artists were not included in an otherwise fabulous list and thus I’m going to have to disregard this allotment.  I really do not think My Chem deserves two places.
1. At The Drive-In – “One Armed Scissor” – I love At the Drive-In, but I was never in love with them, especially this song.  While I appreciate their infusion of ambiance and understand their cultural significance and impact on modern artists, I don’t know if they warrant the number one position.  Musically, they are above many of their contemporaries, with an understanding of song construction that likens them back to psychedelic ’70s music and with that same post-punk neuroticism mastered by Thursday.  I cannot deny their significance, but I would agree more with this award had I experienced that connection with them like I did other acts on this list or even the acts I mentioned that weren’t featured on this list.  I like to think I have really good tastes, but they never captured my heart in the same fashion as other bands in this era.

Reading over my reflections on each song, it’s crazy to realize the impact music has on an individual and how certain songs or certain bands are symbiotic with precise moments in our lives.  They remind us of times we came out triumphant and of times we couldn’t stop feeling lost.  They give us hope when nothing else will and they make us feel like we belong when we feel lonely.  They create community, they divide community, they have the power to make us want more out of life, to make us become better people, and also the power to destroy.  Music allows us to see things and experience things we may not otherwise have and it allows us to reflect on life in an intelligent, intimate way.  It can alter our moods from happy to sad, from sad to happy depending on the connotations it stirs up within each individual.  It truly is one of the most powerful and beautiful of all creations.

  Am off school with lurgie and was just watching Simple Plan’s video for their song ‘I’m Just a Kid’, which is pretty awesome. Cars, skateboards, interesting lyrics. It reminded me of,

  “You like D and D, Audrey Hepburn, Fangoria, Harry Houdini and croquet…”

  Don’t know what I’m talking about? Me neither, actually. I guess I’m just trying to compare the videos by Simple Plan (‘I’m Just a Kid’) and My Chemical Romance (‘I’m Not Okay (I Promise)’). Both set in schools, featuring misfits, accidents and the F word. I feel smart for realising it.

  The next time I blog I won’t mention MCR. Wait, no one reads this crap anyway, what the hell.

My aunt had her operation on Monday. It was, in a word, terrifying. That is, for everyone except my aunt herself. She was sleepy and pretty much dazed all morning, and I think she was actually kind of smiling peacefully when the orderlies came to take her. My other aunt, my uncle’s wife, and I were on the other hand all pretty much wrecks inside. I dare any atheist and agnostic to remain that way while they–or a loved one–is lying there on a stretcher being wheeled into the operating room. I think my thoughts for pretty much the whole day and night can be summed up into this: “Dear God, dear God, please, please, please, please.”

I am glad and very relieved to say that things are progressing about as well as could be expected. The doctor deemed the operation a success (basically, he took out the endometrium, mammoetrium, ovaries, and the lymph nodes in the area to make sure the cancer has nowhere to spread to; it took about 5 hours), and although we have to wait for the final results, there were no visible signs of cancerous growths, indicating that the cancer was caught at a very early stage (thank the Lord!).

My aunt had a tough time the night of the surgery (hello, painkillers!), but by the next day, she was gingerly walking the halls. She’s been continuing to feel better since then, although things were a bit anxious for a couple of days, because she wasn’t expending the gas they pumped into the stomach for the surgery. She was feeling bloated and uncomfortable, and there was even talk of putting a tube up her nose (I’ve had that done before, and trust me, it is just as terrible as it sounds) before she finally delivered what we were referring to as her “gas baby” yesterday morning. So with that “miracle birth,” my aunt has been able to start eating again, first watery gruel (yum), then porridge, and tonight, she’ll be having her first bonafide meal since last Sunday.

Through it all, my aunt has been handling things with admirable composure. Like I mentioned before, she’s a full-on Catholic, and she’s convinced that God lulled her into a state of peace right before the surgery to protect her. My other aunt–of a more pragmatic kind–thought that the doctors had doped her up with something in the IV, but the doctors told us they didn’t. Who knows? I’m just glad that things are going along okay (we just have to wait for the final analysis results to make sure she has the more common form of endometrial cancer and not the more serious type).

All of this has been a major learning experience for everyone involved. As for me, here are some things that I’ve learned:

1) The female endometrium and mammometrium, once taken out, looks just like a big slice of lasagna with a little tunnel in the middle (the doctor showed us photos of everything he took out in full digital color glory).

2) Staples are even more useful that we knew. They didn’t use thread to stitch my aunt’s stomach up; instead, the cut was stapled shut. They’re gonna take them out before she leaves the hospital; I don’t know how, though, as I can’t imagine they’ll be using the staple-remover tool!

3) Hospitals are a lot like airports. They’re both places full of emotions, people crying, people laughing as they head out, people that are tired and cranky with balled-up joints from being cooped up in narrow spaces. Still, you also see sons, daughters, husbands (no wives, as this is the ob/gyn ward, all the patients are female, and lesbian marriages are not legal in Korea), and friends by the patients’ side helping them in various way. And I’m gonna take this chance to pat myself on the back here, too; it turns out I’m a pretty darn good hospital assistant. Backrubs, fetching water, walking companion, more backrubs (my thumb joints are still sore), I can do it all. I’m thinking of leaving my resume at the hospital…

4) Doctors and nurses should be applauded at every turn, the nice, humane ones anyway. My aunt’s two main doctors and group of nurses have been awesome, but we’ve seen a couple of other doctors for other patients who seem cranky and overworked or just too vague when it comes to dispensing information. Humanity, it’s a very important trait.

Cancer – My Chemical Romance

So here’s Part 2 of this series filled with more amazing songs and my thoughts on them.

16. Jesus Christ by Brand New

When it comes to Brand New, you can’t really expect the same thing to come from them. Take The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me. The album took a darker turn in their song writing and their sound, exemplified by the song “Jesus Christ.” Filled with religious images – Jesus Christ, the thoughts of the afterlife, the cross – and a slow tempo, the song is an ode to self-doubt. Rumor has it that the song was written after one of Jesse Lacey’s, the lead singer, badly ended relationships. Whatever the inspiration for this song, the end result was a song of literal fear of the feature, but subtly it discusses the fears that anyone has when something ends and what the future outcome will be. Lacey’s vocals range from lower, gritty more introspective to louder, almost angst-filled scream. The false end of the song after a second of silence lets the listener determine their own end to the story as it is just instrumental and is ambiguous.

15. Swim by Jack’s Mannequin

Music usually has a way to find me, especially during those hard times. I deal with a lot of self-doubt and fear of the future. Released in 2008, Jack’s Mannequin’s The Glass Passenger was filled with songs that dealt with lead singer Andrew McMahon’s fight with leukemia. The song “Swim” details the spirit of his fight. The illness has destroyed the life he had lead since he was a teenager but he knew that to get over and win, he had to fight back. It was his love for his music, those around him and his fans that kept him going. This song came to me during a rough time I was having and has a habit of coming up on my iTunes or iPod when I’m feeling particularly lost in the shuffle and afraid of reaching my goal. It’s those moving words paired with the sheer musical beauty that McMahon creates with his piano work that never fails to move me and acts like the reassuring hug that I need when times are low.

14. The Best of Me by The Starting Line

So, cutesy pop-punk songs aren’t really supposed to stand the test of time. That is not the case for The Starting Line’s biggest hit “The Best of Me” off their debut Say It Like You Mean It released in 2002. The song tells is a one-sided conversation of two young lovers and the idea that their love is something that will last. As cliché and cheesy as it is, the song captures that feeling of young love that is really hard to validate. Yet as The Starting Line went on tour last spring on their final tour (before their indefinite hiatus), crowds all still cheered and sang this song louder than the band did. It’s a song that girls still want to her and that guys know will make any girl melt. “We got older, but we’re still young, we never grew out of this feeling that we won’t give up.” True words.

13. New Year’s Resolution by The Limousines

The calm dance beats with singer Eric Victorino’s doubled and low vocals make for a very interesting tune. The song sets the stage on New Year’s just after midnight. The protagonist and his companion are seemingly taking in the opportunity that a new year could only bring and letting go of the past problems. I take this song as reminding me to live and not to dwell on the mistakes or problems the past had, to not let regrets rule our lives. “Well at least we tried” is the manta at the end of the song that Victorino reassures listeners to adhere to, echoing the sentiment that the journey is more important the destination. By trying and therefore living, a person isn’t living with regrets and letting their lives go unlived.

12. Helena by My Chemical Romance

Though it was “I’m not Okay” that was the summer anthem, it was “Helena” by My Chemical Romance that catapulted the band from the underground to the mainstream. Showing off the band’s flair for drama paired with skilled musicianship and lyrical prowess, the second single of their major label debut Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge put the band in a position that they could not escape. The song, written for Gerard and Mikey Way’s grandmother is the perfect dedication to the woman who encouraged the young musicians to combine different elements into their music, from the punk musical styled with the elaborate dramatics of Way’s lyrics and singing style. The music video to accompany the song as the same sense of flair as the band were dressed in matching suits and has hired dancers and extras in all stylish funeral clothes (yes, I know the solo at the bridge of the song). A farewell to a beloved grandmother and an introduction to the world at large, the band have not lost their sense of drama nor their talent for creating epic music.

11. The Truth About Heaven by Armor for Sleep

Do you believe in ghosts? Armor for Sleep certainly did. At least, the believed enough to make a ghost haunting his lover as the story arc for their sophomore release What To Do When You Are Dead. The album tells the story of a young man who kills himself by crashing his car into a river yet comes back and visits the girl and the house he left behind. “The Truth About Heaven” is the second track of the album and the second part of the story. In the song, the protagonist can returned as a ghost to visit the girlfriend he left behind, expressing his remorse at leaving her and how much he misses her, though not regretting the choice of ending his life. By being ok with the choices that a person makes such as touring or moving away, it doesn’t to let go and stop loving the people you did. As the concept weaves its way all through the album, the recurring line becomes “don’t believe that the weather is perfect the day you die.”

Because I’m so sick of people defending Miley’s awful interview style and basic inability to string together an articulate quote, I give you: Taylor Momsen being interviewed by Nylon TV.

Taylor is sixteen (hater comments about how she looks like she’s in her twenties can shove it because that is not valid in this argument) and sounds well-educated, smart, snarky and yes, articulate in this and most every interview she does.  Homegirl delivers the quotes gold, politely tells journalists to eff off if she isn’t in the mood for their incompetent questions, and doesn’t sound the least bit awkward.  I know people have said that she’s going to look back on these years and regret acting and dressing like she does, but I completely disagree with this as me and most of my friends were just like this at sixteen.  We don’t regret it.  We were still cooler than the Miley Cyrus’s of the world, even when we thought we were awesome for listening to Hole and MCR when no one else did (for the record I still do).  So please Miley, take note and don’t use your age as an excuse for why you sound so effing immature in interviews.  At least Taylor has something to say, and makes a point saying it.

Each member of the group will have their own cover with subscribers to the magazine recieving the limited edition cover with all 5 members (pictured above). Their article will feature the members talking about their upcoming fourth album.

My Chemical Romance has spent almost a year in the studio recording their fourth album with producer Brendan O’Brien, who has worked with Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen.

So what will MCR’s follow up to The Black Parade sound like?  The boss meets pop-punk?

Not exactly.

Singer Gerard Way told Rolling Stone he wanted to “harness everything that’s great about this band into shorter songs. Almost protopunk, like the Stooges or the MC5.”[pullquote quote="protopunk, like the Stooges or the MC5"]

Way said “Trans am,” one of the tracks off the upcoming album, is what pushed the five boys from New Jersey into becoming “an American rock band instead of a British rock band.”  They’ve even recorded their own version of “Born to Run.”

Bruce would be so proud.

Lejos del estilo de The black parade, la banda se fué por el camino del Punk, en sintonía con The Stooges y MC5.

El album no tiene nombre pero sabemos que saldrá para la proxima primavera. Algunas de las canciones incluidas en el album serán “Trans Am”, “I got a bulletproof heart” y “Death Before Disco”.

Gerard Way szerint a rajongók „már izgulhatnak”, hiszen a My Chemical Romance - Rich Costey producer vezetésével – az utolsó simításokat végzi az új lemezen. „Az új album nyersebb és őszintébb és, egyáltalán, sokkal jobb pillanatfelvétel a zenekarról. Egy barátom, aki hallotta már az anyagot, azt mondta, hogy ezek után egyszerűen már nincs kedve a régebbi lemezeinket hallgatni, és, hogy ezzel a lemezzel érdektelenné tettük a régebbi anyagainkat. Dícséretnek veszem a dolgot, hiszen minden új lemeznek a feladta, hogy lényegtelenné tegye az előzőeket – azt gondolom, hogy ez fog történni, amikor az új lemezünk végre megjelenik.” – nyilatkozta a lelkes frontember.

Already shaping up to be the biggest festival for 2010, Soundwave keeps adding to an already killer lineup.

Recently added bands include Placebo, Anthrax, Set Your Goals, Motion City Soundtrack, Enter Shikari, Shinedown and Closure In Moscow.

The festival itself already boasts some of the world’s music talent with Faith No More, My Chemical Romance, Jane’s Addiction, AFI, Paramore, HIM, Trivium and a host of others already on the bill.

Today I am going to introduce to you the legendary ” The Get Up Kids”. No they are not your MTV faux-emo bands like My Chemical Romance(I like their second album though), 30 Seconds to Mars, Fall out boy shit. They are the real deal. The real emo. They have good lyrics, catchy songs and is partly the reason I got into emo. Oh yea I almost forgot, they are playing next year at SoundWave Festival 2010. Sunny Day Real Estate will be playing too, how fucking crazy is that? I’m so fucking going, see you guys there. (Must save up… must start saving…)
