we’ve known each other a fair while now and I have some vitally important news for us. I’m sorry to have to be the one to tell us this, but it really is rather important and once we’ve gone through the denial, the outrage, the pleading and the depression and finally moved into a state of benign acceptance, we’ll be a lot happier and a lot better off.

Not financially, obviously; but mentally and spiritually, which is a close second. If we can accept this truth then writing scripts will be a lot more enjoyable … or at least, slightly less frustrating.

Are we ready? Here it comes:

SCRIPT WRITERS DO NOT WRITE FILMS, WE WRITE FILM SCRIPTS.

There, I’ve said it. Are we shocked? Upset? Maybe a little confused?

Let me explain.

A feature film is two hours of footage distilled from a process which takes several years to complete (roughly seven, if Hollywood gurus are to be believed). It involves a small army of people working excruciatingly long hours, doing all sorts of clever things with lights and costumes and sets and gripping their foleys and other filthy stuff.

Each department depends wholly on all the other departments in order to make a good film. Only when absolutely everyone is working at their best will the end product be of the desired standard. Okay, yeah, maybe one department can slip slightly and the sheer wonderfulness of the rest will compensate – but in the main, it takes everyone firing on all cylinders to come good.

A film script, on the other hand, is 90-120 pieces of paper with some ink on them.

Paper and ink which tells a wonderfully complex story, perhaps (or something about masturbating monkeys, if you’re me) but it’s just paper and ink all the same.

Can we see the difference?

When we sit down to write, no matter what software or computer we’re using, a feature film does not appear on the monitor. Nor does it appear from the printer when we push ‘print’. No. What we get appearing before our very eyes, commanded by our very own tippy-tapping fingers, is a film SCRIPT.

Film script, not feature film – can we see the difference now?

Our product, the thing we’re trying to sell, is the script. That’s the thing we have to try and make as good as possible – because we have no control over the feature film. It literally has nothing to do with us.

I know, I know, it’s very nice to be able to point at a film and say to the girls we’re trying to impress:

“That’s my film, that is.”

By the way, if there are any girls reading – does that work? Would anyone be impressed by that? Because the ones I try it on tend to fall asleep before I’ve finished my sentence.

“That’s my film.”

No it isn’t. It’s a film LOOSELY based on our script. The best we can hope to say is:

“I wrote the script for that.”

Because, and once again I draw our attention to this important distinction:

SCRIPT WRITERS DON’T WRITE FILMS, WE WRITE FILM SCRIPTS.

I know some of us want to be recognised as the author of a film, or the creator, or get that ‘A film by’ credit; but really, why? Why do any of us feel we deserve that credit when we’ve had absolutely nothing to do with:

Acting
Cinematography
Direction
Producing
Editing
Lighting
Set design
Props
Stunts
Visual Effects
Sound Effects
Music
Catering
And pretty much everything else we can possibly imagine?

I mean really, come on – fair’s fair. I even think the ‘Written by’ credit is a little misleading. In reality it should always say ‘Script by’ and even that’s not usually true after the fucking directors have stuck their oar in and everyone from the producer to the tea-boy has given us notes.

Please don’t get me wrong – I’m not saying we don’t deserve credit for writing incredibly beautiful, thrilling, action-packed or moving words (about masturbating monkeys); but by the time the actors have improvised all over the script – how many of those words actually make it into the finished film?

We’re very quick to claim the director, the producer or whoever ruined our scripts; but we’re very slow to realise the resulting feature film really has nothing to do with us. It’s just not ours – it’s theirs.

We did not write that feature film, we wrote the script.

The script is our end goal, it’s the thing we have to perfect – or at least make as good as possible. We should hold our scripts up as an example of our ability and pin our self-worth on their quality, rather than wasting tears on a feature film which makes no fucking sense and looks like it was filmed by two chimps fighting on a trampoline. They didn’t ruin your script, it still exists as an individual work of art(ish) – they just made a shit movie out of it.

I met a visual effects designer once who was working on a high budget Hollywood movie. One he thought was a complete pile of shit. Apparently everyone involved (apart from the producer, writer and director) knew it was going to be a pile of shit. Why then, I asked, did he get involved? Because he knew the effects, the ones designed by him, would be fucking awesome and seen by a lot of people who would happily hire him for the next project.

His work, the product he was selling, was going to be good no matter how shit the film was.

Personally I think we should all adopt that attitude. We can’t control the final film, we can barely even influence it – going round telling people it’s ours when it’s a pile of shit doesn’t really help.

If we tell people we wrote the script for ‘Pile of Shit 2: Revenge of the Shit’ and they point out it was a pile of shit, we can agree. The film has nothing to do with us, once the script leaves our hands it’s … well, out of our hands. It doesn’t matter how good the script is, if every other department is incompetent (or follows incompetent direction) then it will be a shit film.

Then kicker, of course, is when the film is superb, it’s really nothing to do with us either. True, we have contributed a major part to its success; but it’s still not really our film.

We should always do our job to the best of our ability – and that job is to write a script, not a film. Once again:

FILMS ARE NOT WRITTEN, THEY ARE MADE … AND NOT BY US.

Unless we produced and/or directed it – in which case we should be fucking ashamed of ourselves.

Hope this finds us well and doesn’t upset us too much, just read, digest, absorb and get back to doing what we do so well (or so mediocrely, if you’re me) – writing scripts.

Als ich gerade durch die Stadt lief und mich nach dem Kauf eines 2,99-Euro-Buches auf die Stufen am Marktplatz setzte, fingen zwei Straßenmusiker an zu spielen. Der eine mit Klarinette, der andere mit Gitarre. Nichts künstlerisch Wertvolles, wer jetzt sonstewas erwartet, aber vollkommen ausreichend.

Von oben konnte ich die Situation schön betrachten. Es war reges Getümmel auf dem Platz. Einzelne Menschen, Familien mit Kindern, Familien (Paare) ohne Kinder, Kinder pur, Freunde, Arbeiter. Menschen. Die Musik gefiel mir. Swingige Dudelmusik. Nun aber lautete der Titel meines neu gekauften Buches “I Did It My Way”. Und was spielen die zwei betagten und begabten Herren? “My Way” von “Old Blue Eyes” Franky Sinatra. Ein Klassiker, den jeder Straßenmusiker drauf hat. Ist so. Und das Buch habe ich gewählt, weil es die wahre Geschichte eines Mannes im New York der fünfziger Jahre erzählt. Sowas mag ich. In meinen Augen ist das alles sicherlich ein Zufall, aber ohne weitere Bedeutung. Außer der, dass der Zufall so erstaunlich sein kann, dass es nicht verwundert, wenn “leichtgläubige” Menschen dann an “mehr” denken. Wobei es keine Herabwürigung bedeuten soll, wenn ich von “leichtgläubig” spreche. Denn Assoziationsfähigkeit, Fantasie, ein Bedürfnis nach Geborgenheit und Egoismus sitzen in jedem von uns. Egoismus deshalb, weil der Glaube an Bestimmung oder Schicksal, eingeleitet oder ausgeführt von so vielen unabhängigen Faktoren, voraussetzt, dass man sich selbst als Ziel dessen versteht. Alle Personen würden also letztlich dem Plan folgen, der nur im Kopf eines Einzelnen zum Erfolg führt. Ein Ziel gibt es dabei aber nicht. Es ist das zwangsläufige Zusammentreffen eines Repertoirs an Erfahrungen, Handlungen, Wissen und Menschen, die, im selben Kulturkreis, sehr ähnliche Repertoires besitzen. Warum Geborgenheit? Weil Geborgenheit sich schon dadurch ergibt, dass man weiß, dass jemand an einen denkt. Der Gedanke, eine übermenschliche Kraft hätte diesen Moment, diese Gedanken geschaffen, um quasi “hey du da” zu sagen, lässt im simplen Mensch schon so etwas wie Geborgenheit aufkommen. Kommt rüber, was ich sagen will?

Die Musiker spielten noch ein bisschen. Die Menschen gingen an ihnen vorüber. Manche lauschten kurz, andere unterhielten sich (direkt oder mit Handy), einige hörten nichts von der Musik, sondern lieber Billy Talent. Wenige blieben stehen oder sitzen. Dann setzte der Regen ein und hörte nach einer Minute auch schon wieder auf. Aber den zwei Musikern war das Zeichen genug, die Koffer zu packen. Mir dann auch. Ist das Leben nicht wundervoll!? Ja!

…but on of them isn’t reading Swann’s Way (by the way the subject post and this first sentence fragment should be sung to the tune of that Paul Anka/Frank Sinatra classic “My Way” or “Strangers in the Night”–just make sure its Sinatra!).

Well its Friday night and I’m home reading Proust.  I can’t decide if this makes me really intellectual and cultured or just nerdy.  I think I’ll let you make the call.

But part of the reason I’m spending my Friday night thusly is because I’m enjoying this book so much.  So far its a corker!  Sure there’s some room for complaint…let me enumerate

• Not a lot happens. I’m on page 43 and this guy is still in bed.  At this rate this 450 page book is going to end at breakfast.  And where are the damn madeleines?  Bring on the cookies!

• Some of the metaphors are a little…extended. For instance:

My mother did not come, and with no consideration for my pride (which was invested in her not denying the story that she was supposed to have asked me to let her know the results of some search) asked Francoise to say these words to me: “There is no answer,” words I have so often since then heard the doormen in grand hotels or the footmen in bawdy houses bring back to some poor girl who exclaims in surprise, “What, he said nothing? Why, that’s impossible! Did you really give him my note? All right, I’ll go on waiting.”  And–just as she invariably assures him she does not need the extra gas jet which the doorman wants to light for her, and remains there, hearing nothing further but the few remarks about the weather exchanged by the doorman and a lackey whom he sends off suddenly, when he notices the time, to put a customer’s drink on ice…

Um..what were we talking about?  What was that doorman like?

• The narrator’s a little creepy. The little dude is staring at his mom’s face planning where he’s going to give her a kiss.  That’s a little weird.

But I like it…and I can’t decide if its because of the idiosyncracies listed above or in spite of them.

Here’s something I know I like.  The narrator as a little boy thinking “I had heard people say that George Sand was an exemplary novelist.”  What a delightfully nerdy little kid!  I’m probably just jealous because when I was little I wasn’t so much weighing the relative merits of gender-conflicted novelists as trying to be funny because I thought that when people on TV watched TV they were watching us.

And don’t worry…I’ve just come to expect that you identify with every major character in fiction from The Hunchback of Notre Dame’s Quasimodo to The Secret Garden’s Colin (I’ve told you…it’s not that noticeable).  And I imagine it will continue…when we read Moby Dick you’ll be Ahab, when we read Watership Down you’ll be a bunny.

Well I think I’ve written enough for one night (Proust makes me wordy…its contagious!).

Nu er jeg jo rigtig meget til at hvad der er sundt. Superfood udmærker sig jo ved at det har mange vitaminer, mineraler og ikke mindst antioxidanter. De superfoods, der står højest på vores liste i øjeblikket er gojibær og hvedegræspulver. Vi har fundet et hvede- og byggræspulver til en rimelig pris og så er det med rødt økomærke. Vi putter det i vores smoothie hver eneste morgen, så får vi klorofyl og masser af andre gode næringsstoffer. goji bær kommer vi også i blenderen. Goji bær har en rigtig høj ORAC værdi. ORAC er et udtryk for hvor mange antioxidanter, der er i et produkt pr 100 gram, så er det nemmere at sammenligne. Men jeg tror nu nok det er nemmere at spise 100 gram gojibær end 100 gram rå kakaopulver. Kakaopulver har 10 gange så høj en ORAC værdi som goji. Men prøv det find det i helsekostbutikkerne. Jeg anbefaler Vitabox når der skal købes superfood.

Hold da op hvor er der mange der lider af eksem eller har problemhud. Jeg synes det er rigtig synd, når helt små børn bliver angrebet af børneeksem. Det kaldes atopisk eksem. Men heldigvis er der kommet en salve eller creme, som ikke indeholder binyrebarkhormon eller andre stoffer, som på sigt kan være skadelige. Alva Naturkosmetik har lavet en creme som hedder Salva Derm. Den koster kun 199,- kroner og fås i mange helsekostbutikker. Jeg kender en, som har en søn på 5 måneder, som lider af børneeksem. Hun har prøvet rigtig mange forskellige cremer, men da hun fik en prøve på Salva Derm kunne hun straks se forskellen. Det er helt fantastisk, så det vil jeg godt anbefale.

Jeg har en rigtig god ven, som gør rent i Ålborg. Det har han gjort i over 20 år nu. Han har gode stabile kunder og det er kun fordi han passer sin rengøring og vinduespolering rigtig godt. Jeg vil meget gerne anbefale ham til alle firmaer, som står og skal vælge nyt rengøringsfirma. Så mangler du et lille seriøst rengøringsfirma i Ålborg eller nordjylland, så kontakt mop’n.

Skal du købe lækker lingeri eller lingerie, som nogen ynder at kalde det, så kan jeg varmt anbefale www.lingeri-online.dk. Det yder en rigtig god service og de har rigtig gode priser. Så hvis du heller ikke kan li’ at gå ind i en butik, hvis du skal købe lidt lækkert til konen, så er det hele klaret på nettet. Hvem bliver ikke glad for en blød pakke. Jeg spørger bare. Og det er jo både giveren og modtageren der bliver glade for det. Find et flot BH-sæt eller en chemise hos lingeri-online.

Larzencare, som du finder på www.larzencare.dk synes jeg du skal checke ud hvis du står og mangler arbejdskraft til rengøring eller trappevask. De stiller med det nødvendige mandskab i løbet af ‘ingen’ tid. Og kvaliteten af det de laver er helt i top. Og det er til helt fair priser. Carola Kleinschmidt sagt ganz deutlich: Kind und Karriere sind möglich.

Sie weist aber auch auf zahlreiche Probleme hin. Einer meiner Lieblingssätze ist der folgende: „Familie findet in einer Parallelwelt statt, die möglichst nicht die Erwerbsarbeit stören soll.“

Zusätzlich habe ich noch einen Artikel von der Autorin über 10 Job-Mythen gefunden, der mich auch sehr anspricht, insbesondere der Teil über „Was im Job zählt, ist Leistung“ und „Vitamin B haben andere, nicht ich“, sowie „Ich bin zu erschöpft von der vielen Arbeit“.

Was ich davon mitnehme 

Meine Learnings sind eindeutig: Auftreten ist oft wichtiger als Leistung, Netzwerken ein Grundbaustein der Weitereintwicklung und Zeitmanagement der große Druckwegnehmer.

Vielleicht muss man das Buch nicht unbedingt lesen, aber die Ansätze der Autorin sind erfrischend.
