Whitney opened the boutique Myrtle in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles in 2011 and has been an avid supporter of MCMC ever since. Favorite MCMC fragrance: On myself I like HUNTER, but in the air, I love LOVE! I frequently add a drop or two to the water when I’m steaming clothes here at the shop.

When did you first start wearing perfume? What fragrance was it?: The first fragrance I remember having was a wax perfume that came in a plastic locket with a Barbie doll; I loved it and always wanted something like it. I finally tracked down a grown-up version in Narciso Rodriguez’s For Her, which really makes me laugh. The first perfume I ever bought for myself was Red Jeans at the Versace store in Venice, Italy. I was in high school and I felt SO sophisticated!

If you were a plant, what would you be?: I am one of three girls and when I was a kid, we had three trees in the front yard. The Bradford Pear was “mine” and that’s probably fitting because the fruit is tiny.

What’s in your refrigerator right now?: Butter and eggs (I love to bake) and leftover pizza (bf’s fave)

Fire has always been regarded as the great purifier.

The ancients would pass their livestock through the Beltane fire to create an aura of protection around them, and ensure their survival through the year. The act of burning old habits and afflictions in a fire is said to release them from your life. Fire transmutes, releases and renews. It softens and melts, making a malleable substance that can be shaped to your liking.

The hearth of a home has been regarded as a sacred place, the heart of the house, the altar. A spell of protection is to burn within the fire of your home or in a bomb fire on your property, different sprigs of herbs… such as…

Rosemary, lavender, juniper branches, myrtle, or bay. 

Toss bundles of each of the herbs listed into the flames of a fire. let its energy cleanse you. Let it feed your spirit, and free you from negativity. Let the fire lull you into a trance, and as you go deeper into the flames, whisper the burdens that lay heavy on your heart. 

You can even write on slips of fresh paper the things that you want to release from your life, and then toss them into the flames.

One hundred year old sisters, Ethel, Myrtle and Effy visited Langley Fine Arts School this week. They were delighted to be at the school but they observed many changes in the world over the past 100 years.

Myrtle is one of the characters of The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel.  She is the unhappy wife of George Wilson, who owns an unsuccessful garage in the Valley of Ashes and Tom Buchanan’s lover.

She doesn’t belong to the main characters’ category, that’s why I chose to focus on her. She’s really important because she symbolizes an era in which arranged marriages were common in order to keep the family wealth, at the expense of true feelings.

This woman is frivolous and careless. She’s madly in love with Tom and she doesn’t realize that he only plays with her feelings. Somehow, he tries to buy her love. For example, at the beginning of the movie released in 1974 there is the scene with the dog : she wants Tom to buy her a puppy  and seems to enjoy his wealth and the power of it. Her husband cannot please her as he does, even if he seems to be in love with her. She’s not free and tries to find her place in the society by hanging out with Tom. She thinks he’s a gentleman, but he clearly shows he’s violent by slapping her. She believes in this artificial happiness made of money and luxury. We can say she’s abused, candid, ingeneous and corrupted by money. She feels imprisoned and would like to live the town. She always argues with her husband : for example, she accuses him of not having bought a new suit at their wedding. She acts like a capricious girl even if  George tries to satisfy her.

She is accidentally killed after being hit by a car driven by Daisy, though Gatsby takes the blame for it. Her husband is upset and Tom seems embarrassed (he sweats), even if in the end he seems to have forgotten this story. Jay Gatsby, the main (and eponymous) character was an obstacle to Daisy and Tom’ love. Myrtle has mediated this hatred by being a “toy” obsessed with reward. Daisy is upset because of her husband’s infidelities but she tries to be indifferent. She hates every girl her husband woes. The fact that Myrtle is on her way the day of the accident isn’t due to chance. She is one of the causes of the couple’s problems. All she wants is a beautiful life and she is able to do bad things and to be corrupted in order to improve her personnal situation.But all she gains is the reputation of being frivolous. She prevents the couple from living”happily”: Daisy is furious against her husband and finds solace with Gatsby, Tom continues to flirt and to buy superficial gifts for his lover. As all the lovers are dead, the couple can live happily again. At the end, the quest of happiness turns vain and shows the decline of the American Dream.

Chloe

The garden appeared when my mother noticed a little blue star peeking out from underneath the brush. Further inspection led to the appearance of more and more little stars, and I watched as she gestured this discovery to my older brother.  He headed across the lawn to our toolshed, and my mother summoned me for the usual ride along. It was laundry day, and I had potato chips to buy, and a metal basket cart to slalom through dust bunnies that the local laundromat offered without reserve.

Belly full of chips, and my wash cloth folding abilities tested, my mother and I returned home, baskets of clean jeans and floral shirts bouncing with us across the potholes. At the last bend in our half mile driveway, I was shocked to see that the far portion of the hill bordering our parking lot had been stripped of its invasive honeysuckle. Its nakedness revealed a carpeting of leathery green leaves and little blue stars. Myrtle, my mother explained to me; a hearty groundcover.

My brother was still whacking away at stubborn root systems, pick axe in full swing. My mother parked and rolled down the dusty window.

“It’s a birthday present,” he said. He wiped sweat from his forehead. “Thought you’d like to have it cleared off.”

“It’s wonderful!” My mother leaned out the window to inspect the cover further.

From there it grew. My mother cleared a little more from the unburied patch each day, weeding anything that broke up the solid texture of the myrtle. She discovered a flat shelf of limestone halfway up the hill which became a walkway. To get to this, she added stairs, by hauling rocks she found nearby, or clearing off more shelves of gray stone.

It became her therapy, a little peace away from the grind of hospital work. If I couldn’t find her when I awoke, I’d pad out on bare feet to find her in the garden, the sun still pale from rising. I would coax her to come back inside, to make tea or read a story. She’d hug me to her side and shush me a little, letting me sit on the rocks and play with the pale blue flowers. Then she’d take a few more minutes to tuck secret parts of herself between the rocks, the dirt and the leaves.

   
After finally meeting Em we got to the beach in just under 40minutes. It was around 12:15 with a gorgeous blue sky. We slathered on sunscreen (yes Bizzle you would have been proud of me). “This is SPF 70+! You might as well be inside, you’ll get more tan through the window” -Emzie After lots of reading and water we locked our stuff in the car and got ready for our walk. We went to the top of the hill to see all the gannets on “their rock”. The smell wasn’t amazing but it was a pretty view. 

  

The black sand beach actually had a lot of different things to see. After we finished walking along the top of the hill we went to take a closer look at the tide pools. The water was sooo clear! We loved looking at the cave and walking in it. It was so pretty looking at the colours and all the personal engravings. It started to get fairly crowded so we took a few quick pictures before exiting.

  
The sun was hot and we decided to treat ourselves to some ice cream before the drive back. Lucky we cooled off before getting back on the highway. We were only around 11 km away from Em’s house when I noticed white smoke from my rear view mirror. Instead of blowing away its thickness picked up.

I parked Myrtle on the side of the highway and we endured countless honks and hollers while we waited for my Kiwi-Mom to rescue us.

I felt so badly that she had to bring the kids and drive all that way to pick us up. She did a quick check of the car and tried to see if more oil or water would help the car. Cars are not allowed to be left on the side of the highway so we were going to try and drive it to the nearest street. Unfortunately we probably only got a few metres before my Myrtle wouldn’t let me accelerate and we had to ditch any last hope of getting her home. I parked as close to the edge of the road as possible then we pushed her off to the side. We stripped her of any personal belongings and we all shuffled in our rescue vehicle feeling defeated and glum. After dinner a tow truck brought Myrtle home….for a fee. Our family is now in the market of looking for a new vehicle ASAP as I  have school runs and soccer on Monday!!!

I am still in the process of getting caught up on my blogs. I wanted to post this today so it was still fresh in my mind. It’s nice having the boys back in school so I have my days back for myself but I’ve been feeling like the days have been slipping by. I am in the midst of researching Thailand Thailand Thailand: jobs, visas, accommodations, climate, flights just so time consuming. I have also been trying out a new healthier lifestyle; more exercise and eating healthier…less laziness! I promise I will post the missing blogs eventually. I have lots more memories and photos still to share. SO THANKFUL Myrtle chose today to stop running instead of while the girls and I were on our roadtrip. We would have been STRANDED!!!! So thankful!

Golden Myrtle, Queensland Golden Myrtle (Thaleropia queenslandica)
(Myrtaceae)

Few rainforest plants light up the forest in summer like the Golden Myrtle. At dusk, when the bright sun has just withdrawn its light from the world, the golden flower clusters of this lovely tree look as if they have just been switched on!

And these flowers, borne in racemes at the ends of the branchlets, glow with a special lustre even at midday when the sun is at its brightest. This is because each one of the tiny five-petalled blossoms carries an anther tipped with a large oil gland on the end of long, protruding stamens.

The Golden Myrtle comes from the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland but can be grown anywhere in the subtropics and in sheltered warm-temperate gardens. It generally won’t thrive where temperatures go below 10°C for long periods but will withstand light frosts. It’s an excellent ornamental for warm-climate gardens because of its small size and naturally rounded shape. In the wild, in competition with other trees, maximum height can top 20 metres. In semi-cultivation – for example when grown under open conditions in a large garden or park, or as a street tree – I’ve seen specimens grow to about 10 – 12 metres. This is undoubtedly due to more sunlight and the greater availability of water. Such specimens often look a bit untidy, with sections of sparse branches poor in foliage. Like all rainforest trees grown in the garden, this small tree/large shrub needs regular tip pruning when young and a modest cut back once a year after flowering to create and maintain a dense, rounded, tidy shape. Do this, and you can keep the size to a manageable 4- 6 metres.

LEAVES
The leaves are simple, opposite, margins entire and often slightly wavy, elliptic to lanceolate, about 6 – 8cm long and quite narrow (2-4cm wide), apex acute and tapering to a rounded tip. The main (mid) vein is prominent on both surfaces and the lateral veins are straight and parallel, close together and barely visible. Colour is a bright, shining green with paler underleaf; the numerous crowded oil dots are visible with a lens. New growth is a lovely coppery red and the petioles and mid-vein have a covering of fine, rust-red hair which disappears with maturity.

FRUIT
The fruit is a round, brown capsule up to 5cm in diameter which contains many tiny seeds.

PROPAGATION
The small seed, typical of the Myrtaceae, should be scattered on to the surface of a fibrous material such as peat , finely processed coconut fibre or even cotton wool, then covered with the thinnest layer of seed-raising or fine potting mix. Keep the temperature above 15 °C. Germination can be slow – a minimum of 30 days to a maximum of three months and seed often shows a low viability so sow immediately after collection. Cuttings taken from the tip or sappy mid-stem of young branches strike easily.

GENERAL CULTIVATION

The main decision to make is whether you want this versatile plant to grow as a tree or a shrub. If the former, cut out all but one of the shrubby stems in the first year or so to encourage the development of a single trunk. Tip prune regularly to form a dense, rounded canopy and prune back by about one-third after flowering each year when the tree/shrub has reached the desired height.

Water regularly in the first year until the tree is established. After that, no watering should be necessary except for young trees during prolonged dry periods in summer. Though this is a plant from the wet tropics, like all Queensland rainforest trees it is adapted to heavy monsoonal rains followed by three month (sometimes longer) dry periods in winter-spring. Fertilising is not necessary but an annual dressing of good compost or blood and bone during the first couple of years will boost growth.

REVEGETATION

Thaleropia queenslandica should only be used in revegetation schemes in its area of origin. Here it’s an essential part of the natural forest though its fairly slow growth in the early stages means it can’t be used as a pioneer species and must be kept free of weeds so that growth isn’t inhibited by competition.

FURTHER COMMENTS
Thaleropia queenslandica was previously known as Metrosideros queenslandicus and most gardeners (and retailers) still use this name.

I love this tree! And I do think of it as a tree rather than a shrub because it does get so tall without pruning. I’ve grown one in every garden of mine for more than 20 years now and look forward to early summer when, in my garden and neighbourhood, the first sunburst of flowers appears. Do note, though, that it may be seven years before the tree flowers for the first time.

Sydney – Cairns in Australia. Florida and the Gulf Coast of the USA as well as southern California. Tropical and subtropical South/Central America. South-east Asia, India and Africa (except the desert), Greek islands, wet and warm parts of the Middle East. Could possibly be grown in warm, sheltered conditions in Cornwall and the Mediterranean coast of Spain.

Experiencing Capri with my husband for the first time.  Great expectations. Weather looking questionable…will it rain or shine?

The days have been filled with non-stop dashing, bustling, climbing, darting, hastening and scurrying through the grimy grandeur of Naples.  We are ready for a warm retreat.

We dock with the ferry, gather our backpacks, and wind our way through Capri’s Marina Grande. All is white everywhere…white buildings, white clothing, even a white sky….but the sky over Capri should be blue!

As we climb the steps toward the village, I watch the wind gently tease the little white sails on the harbor boats. Small whitecaps begin to form on the green-blue sea.

We check our map to mark our route, then cram ourselves onto a tiny overcrowded bus that will take us up, up the winding little back streets to Anacapri, the smaller of the islands two villages.

After a fifteen minute hike through orchards and groves of modest homes, our pathway brings us to our bed and breakfast. The clouds begin to hem us in like the batting of a quilt.

Our Cloudy Retreat

We awake the next morning to the sound of wind blowing against the glass. Stepping outside, my heart sinks. No warm exotic weather for us! The wind has changed from playful to billowing.

We decide to brave the storm and walk down the winding pathway to the little village. The rain begins its banter, giving expression to the swirling wind. My cheeks feel its cool sweep as I lean into it, determined to make our destination.

Passing through an orchard we find ourselves in the open, taking in the tumultuous sea. The thick-set heather and myrtle is all around us, frisking in the wind along the open terrain, holding tightly onto their plot of earth like rocks. Cypress trees sway and dip. My hair quickly morphs into a tangled mess.

We find a small store and buy bread, prosciutto, cheese and gherkins to make sandwiches back in our room. Choosing a couple of books on display, “The Story of San Michele,” and “The Twelve Caesars,” we retrace our steps back through the elements of the raging gods. Heads down, enduring the pelt of rain and buffeting of wind, our pilgrims bodies once more find the comfort of ‘home.’

We dry off with warm showers, make our prosciutto, cheese and gherkin sandwiches, and find hot chocolate from the kitchen. Tucking ourselves into our magnificent bed with airy white comforters, we begin to cherish the simplicity of the day. It was not what we had hoped for, but better than we could have imagined. Our sandwiches were the best, the hot chocolate delightful, and our books kept us engaged with some of Capri’s most illustrious former residents–the generous Axel Munthe and the unforgettable Caesars of the early Roman empire.

Since it first aired in 2005, Pinoy Big Brother as a reality show has produced celebrities that have the potential to withstand the test of time in Philippine Showbiz; two of which, Gerald Anderson and Kim Chiu. She captured the heart of the mass with, purely, her personality.

Years after, I found myself trying out for the second time, but after two hours of painstakingly standing under the heat of the sun, between thousands of sweaty fellow hopefuls, reality hit me.

One shot. For most of us, that’s all we really need, to showcase every minute detail of our being, what we are made of, what we can do, offer, prove. It’s not a question of talent anymore, it’s a game of chance, whoever luck will favor, it’s all about right timing.

It sucks to realize that we really are all beggars in life trying to make our dreams come true. We solicit time, trust and chance to those who already succeeded in life.

I wont be part of that unfortunate circle anymore. I am taking back my divine right to take control of my life and go thru it how I want it to be.

Bottle Design and Artwork:  This is a standard vial / imp size (1/32 oz).  The label wrapped around the bottle features an Art-Deco inspired phoenix with name of the company next to the phoenix. On the other side, the title of the scent written in large, clear black font outlined with red on the front.

Scent:

• In the Imp (ITI):  Strong red wine and leather.  Eh…I just am not fond of wine notes, I think.
• Wet:  Ugh, just too much wine. I get leather and roses underneath, which I enjoy.  However, the entirety of the scent just isn’t working well with my skin chemistry.
• Dry: The wine has faded considerably and provides just  a tint to the crushed roses, violet, and musk.  Much better dried.

Why are some people dancers and other people too afraid to hit the dance floor?

We all know about power in our lives.  Teachers are allowed to go in the side doors; students are not.  Some kids have parents who will sign them out; some kids don’t.  Some kids are leaders; some go with the crowd.  Some students get away with murder; other kids get busted just for thinking of doing something wrong.

As Nick’s father says at the beginning of the novel: “‘Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,’ he told me, ‘just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you have had’” (Fitzgerald 1).

In The Great Gatsby, the world is divided into two groups:  those with power and those without.  Our job is to figure out what power is and how people get it.

YOUR TASK:

1.  Define “power.”  Try to limit your answer talking about power that people have with each other.

2.  Think about this question:  who has more power:  Daisy Buchanan or Myrtle Wilson?

3.  Answer the question with evidence to back your argument.  Find at least one quote from the text, format it properly, then explain why your evidence supports your answer to the above question.

YOU WILL NEED

(enough for Merv too)

• 4 shots Bombay Sapphire Gin
• 2 shots Cointreau
• 2 shots lemon juice
• 3 teaspoons of marmalade

AND TO MAKE
Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker with plenty of ice and shake.

TO SERVE

Serve in a chilled martini glass. Garnish if you like with a lemon or orange twist. Present with or without one of Paddington’s very hard stares…

Amaretto Sours are easy to make and as long as you have the Amaretto, the other ingredients are ones you should have in your pantry. I’ve added the rosemary which gives a lovely herbal note. If you have it, great, if not, leave it out!

YOU WILL NEED

(enough for Merv too)

• 4 shots Amaretto (Disaronno or equivalent)
• 2.5 shots lemon juice
• 1 egg white
• 4 dashes Angostura Bitters
• 4 sprigs rosemary (2 for muddling, 2 for garnish)

AND TO MAKE

• Pare off two nice pieces of lemon zest off your lemon before juicing, and reserve with two of the sprigs of rosemary for your garnish
• Muddle the remaining two of the rosemary sprigs in your shaker
• Add the amaretto, lemon juice, bitters, egg white and PLENTY of ice.  Using plenty of ice means the ice won’t warm up too quickly and melt, this is especially important when using egg white so you don’t water down that lovely unctuousness texture made by the egg white
• Shake HARD!   You should be shaking for at least 30 seconds to emulsify the egg white.

TO SERVE

Strain into a tumbler filled with ice, garnish with your rosemary sprig and lemon zest. Pour from a height if you like extra foaminess!

Drink and enjoy!
