Every time we hit 3 or 4 fish at once, it reminds me of a slot machine I used to hear going off when I wintered in Deadwood. This time of year, I am constantly hearing Jimmy Buffet in my head, “We got fins to the left, fins to the right…” while we are in the middle of a hot fishing frenzy. Just got done fishing with Paul Cerwinka and his cousin Mike and friend Johnny Evans. We have been having a blast fishing together since 2000. Its great fishing with clients who become great friends. Paul missed last season after his wife Suzanne passed away. It was so good to have him back and see him smile again after several really tough years. Many fish were caught, old stories told and new memories added. See you guys next year!

From the dynamic Skies in Motion to the serenity of Mystic Waters, Dan Powers knows how to captiva

From the dynamic Skies in Motion to the serenity of Mystic Waters, Dan Powers knows how to captivate a viewer with his well-timed photography. The five images are shown here are my favourites so far, the most captivating is the curving skyscraper (above) from Skies in Motion. To me, this image says majestic, sweeping, a part of things larger than itself.

Originally from a medicine background that saw him through service with the US Marines, Dan is a self-taught photographer whose work has won several awards. His speciality is photographing time and he says about this topic,

“Most photographs are two-dimensional pictures of a three-dimensional space. But when a photograph is taken with exposures as long as fifteen minutes, time becomes a part of the image. Suddenly, the three-dimensional space is moving through time, leaving a trail of its former presence on the photographic canvas.”

“Previously, photography was heralded for its capacity to render a moment in time…The Perfect Moment. My photography reveals not only what is there, but what was. Only film photography, or its modern digital equivalent, can capture this so precisely.”

In this age of digital photography and inkjet printers, Dan Powers also retains his skills as a darkroom professional and he “spends hours reviewing and editing every shadow and highlight, every nuance of color, and in choosing the right medium for the image. There is nothing in one of my prints that was not intended to be there.” His attention to detail and quality are paramount, and he guarantees his prints for a lifetime. Now that’s a guarantee!

Dan currently lives in Newburyport with his family, where he continues to work with his camera and slow shutter. Most of his photos were taken in and around Massachusetts where, noting from his blog, he takes a keen interest in the local photographic community and gallery events. The music selected for his own photo website matches his imagery very well.

The image below is from Mystic Waters, and reminds me so much of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader from The Chronicles of Narnia. I love because it’s as the shore on the other side might disappear and the water carry on into forever.

These three pictures below do not go without comment! I find the contrasting soft whites and solid blacks of the clock tower image very striking. The centre photograph (part of the Language of Morning collection) could be sold to Mac as a desktop background, and the creeping mist by the lighthouse makes me think of breakers and the salty smell of the sea. Fabulous images Dan, I look forward to seeing more of your work!

There are always some stockinette socks on the needles, and I finished some for me, knitted with Opal Rainforest wool.

My second Mystic Waters is growing slowly, I am knitting Chart F right now.

I am not only doing several things at the same time on the needles, but also on the spinning wheels, depending on my mood. On the left is some mohair with merino, and on the right Norddeutscher Kammzug (Northern German roving) from Tinka. This one becomes very fluffy automatically, I guess it is a real good roving for beginners.

Occasionally I knit on this cardigan from selfspun merino wool, which is a bit like the Vest Glava.

This might be my next free pattern in this blog, sock named Bubbillion. I got the name from bubbles, and lots of small circles makes a bubbillion of bubbles.

It’s been a little while since I last posted, things have been keeping me pretty busy here on

It’s been a little while since I last posted, things have been keeping me pretty busy here on the homefront. School, work, getting sick and then better, and lots of other little responsibilities have been taking up most of my time, but I have some progress pictures to show of my knitting!

First off is Secret of the Stole. I think I’m liking the look of this pattern less and less as I knit it and see others’ progress, it’s just not something I would ever wear or use. I’ll stick it through though, because it’s been dedicated as a Christmas gift to a grandmother. I know she’ll love it, especially since it’s handmade. Here’s my progress after Hint#5:

Another lace project I’m working on is the Mystic Waters shawl, and I’m loving the pattern so far. I’ve knit only Hint #1 so far, because the SotS has been taking up more of my time since it’s a gift. I enjoy every minute of the Mystic Waters though, so I’m trying to breeze through the stole.

Keep in mind, both of these are my first lace projects and objects knitted from charts, I love charts now and can’t imagine doing these from written instructions!

The scarf I’m knitting for the Ravelry scarf exchange is almost done, but I can’t share the pictures here, it’s a secret. Just remember that yummy blue Malabrigo and imagine it in scarf form. Also, my Central Park Hoodie is coming along nicely, I’ve got the back, one front, and half of another finished and next I’ll be working on the sleeves. I don’t want to follow the written pattern of knitting them in one piece and seaming up the sides, so I’m trying to find a modification for converting flat into round knitting. Any sources?

Depending on the weather, a few of my friends and I are going to the North Florida Fair tonight, it should be a lot of fun. Last year we had a blast, and this year we have another unlimited ride ticket. Here’s to good weather!

I used to dress up every year for halloween. I would usually go for classic monsters. I’ve been a witch, ghost, vampire, werewolf and bride of Frankenstein. Then one year I didn’t have an idea in time to get anything together and the whole thing just sort of fizzled out. I made a couple of lame efforts – wearing my SCA garb for instance – but nothing at all the last few years. I’ve lost my halloween mojo. So sad.

Halloween was always one of my favorites as a child. You got to dress up as anything you wanted and go run around the neighborhood at night collecting tons of candy. I grew up in southern California so the weather was always perfect even at the end of October. One of the other things Halloween had going for it was the lack of visiting relatives. We didn’t have to watch our manners or be relegated to the kid’s table at dinner. Halloween was nothing but fun and too much candy – and scary stuff. Can’t forget the scary stuff.

I’m not a big fan of the modern slasher films but old fashioned spooky stuff is great fun. I remember racing home from school so that I could get my homework done by 4pm. We had to finish our homework before we could watch TV and Dark Shadows came on at 4. I never missed it. It was one of the few shows my brother and I never argued about.

So what does all this have to do with knitting? Not a thing, I’m just meandering a bit.

On the knitting front, I’ve started the collar for my Capecho.

It won’t be long before I can wear it. I’m looking forward to adding this to my wardrobe. I’ve been almost monogamous with this project, just the occasional fling here and there, like finishing chart A of the Mystic Waters shawl:

I didn’t manage to finish the first clue, darn it, but at least it looks more like something than the previous photo.

Here it is the last day of Socktober and I have almost nothing to show for it. I did finish the Xmas stockings which are nearly socks but I started them at the end of August and worked on them through September. I probably spent about a day and half of Socktober working on them and most of that was embroidery not knitting. I did get some new sock yarn and a sock book or two and just last night I started a sock with some of the new yarn and one of the books. When I say started though, I mean just started see:

I’m using the Sockotta that I got from Romancing the Yarn and some Jawoll Cotton from my stash to make the Clematis Socks from New Pathways for Sock Knitters. There are several sock patterns in this book that I intend to make or adapt and this is one of my favorites. I’ve been resisting ever since I got the book but I finally broke last night. It’s crazy. I’ve already got four other pairs of socks on the needles. I didn’t need to make it five, really. I’m weak.

So I would have posted a nice post earlier this week, except for the event which topped my list of “things that went wrong last week” – my camera was stolen from where I work. I left it there for the night (a DAYCARE, no less) and by the morning, it was gone. I assume the cleaning crew took it and am doing whatever I can to get it back or a monetary reimbursement, and I might have a chance at the latter if nothing turns up. I’m really upset about this, it was a new camera given to me by my parents for my birthday a couple of months back.

Since I don’t have any new pictures to show, I’ll just say that I’m almost a foot into my Scarf Exchange project and almost done with Clue 1 of the Secret of the Stole. I’m not sure that this will be my style of stole, but I know someone who would love to get it for christmas. For my first lace project, I’m not doing too bad! A couple of missed YOs and such, but I diligently tinked back and reknit all imperfections. Charts and beads are your friends.

I also signed up for a new mystery lace project - Mystic Waters Shawl. It’s a triangular shawl and has a very interesting name, though I might start it a little later than everyone else because of my current projects.

But right now Sandy kitten is walking and mewing all over my hands and the keyboard, making it slightly difficult to type. I’ll try and post an update about my camera as soon as I get more information. Wish me luck with getting it back!
