by Paul Cornell & Duane Swierczynski (writers), Leonard Kirk & Steve Dillon (art) The Story:

by Paul Cornell & Duane Swierczynski (writers), Leonard Kirk & Steve Dillon (art)

The Story: From the ashes of this summer’s Avengers/X-Men Utopia extravaganza, Norman Osborn’s own Dark X-Men rise. The government-sanctioned team of mutant ne’er-do-wells are called to investigate a strange occurrence in California that leads to the resurrection of Nate Grey, X-Man!

What’s Good: Leonard Kirk needs to be put onto another ongoing series as soon as possible. His artwork on the much-missed Captain Britain and MI:13 series was always solidly entertaining and the man knows how to tell a story clearly while still creating a beautiful looking comic. His pencils on this premiere issue of Dark X-Men are no different. In spite of my general disinterest with the plot, I found myself turning the pages readily due to Kirk’s solid storytelling. The artist does an admirable job depicting what every character is feeling, especially Mimic. The struggle and depression is evident in his body language and facial expressions, such that I was never left with any doubt about the character’s emotional state throughout. As I was flipping through the pages preparing for this review, it struck me how similar Kirk’s clean linework is to New Avengers artist Stuart Immonen, yet another solid artist who’s work can also go unappreciated at times. It’s disappointing when you think about it, but when a creator consistently plugs along, producing steadily good output month in and month out, most readers take them for granted. If there’s anything to be appreciative of in this title, it’s certainly Leonard Kirk.

On a side note, Kirk also draws quite the pretty “Jean Grey”. He almost made me miss having her around, until I remembered that the best stories she’s ever been in were the ones where she died. Oh well.

The back-up story by Swierczynski and Dillon is satisfactory, if not anywhere near groundbreaking. We’ve seen the tale of the gruff teacher who is shown to be silently proud of his student before, but the writer ably manages to imbue some personality into the story. Steve Dillon’s pencils play a big part here as well. He captures Hope’s frustration with her mentor perfectly, which really sells what Swierczynski’s trying to convey.

What’s Not So Good: Nostalgia isn’t always good for you.

I was a big fan of the X-Man title back during the late 1990’s. The character of Nate Grey, while little more than a Cable What If…?, really struck a chord with me when I was much younger and filled with a lot more angst. Maybe it was the always-tragic “dead by 21″ schtick or the outsider among outsiders vibe the kid had going on, but I was sold. Even as it dropped progressively lower and lower on the readability scale, I was always at the comic shop for the next issue of that series. So when I heard that the character was making his long-delayed return in this miniseries, I of course picked it up. Regrettably, I found myself recalling the past in more ways than one after finishing Dark X-Men #1. While I was happy to read about Nate Grey again (well, for a page or two), I’m not as forgiving of spending my hard-earned cash on an uninteresting comic to do so.

With the sound and fury of Matt Fraction’s Utopia event over and done with, writer Paul Cornell is left with four characters that aren’t very riveting apart, much less together. Events at the conclusion of the story-line that birthed them saw basically every one of the more interesting members of the team, such as Namor, the Cloak and Dagger duo, and Daken, exit to (mostly) greener pastures. Cornell is stuck with the likes of Mystique, Dark Beast, Mimic and (the artist formerly known as Weapon) Omega. While Cornell certainly gives the script his all, I never found myself caring one way or the other about what was happening. I’m well aware that these characters aren’t called “Dark” for no reason, and as such aren’t meant to be easily sympathized with, but when I’m not even inspired to want to see what any of the lead characters do next, the writing’s on the wall.

Conclusion: Regardless of the return of a favorite of mine to the Marvel Universe, this issue fell flat for me. Annoying and bland characters plus a premise that I’ve already seen ad nauseam in other Dark Reign titles equals a complete misfire. Buy it for the Leonard Kirk and Steve Dillon artwork. Otherwise, skip it.

I already have red hair, so that was the easy part. The hard part was painting my body with liquid latex! I’ve outlined some thoughts on applying liquid latex, so keep scrolling on down!

My Mystique costume

I researched a bunch of Mystique images and I opted to follow the face and hair of the movie version.

Purchasing Liquid Latex:

This was my first time buying liquid latex. I purchased liquid latex from www.liquidlatex.com and this was my order:

32 oz. Blue liquid latex – Since I only painted half my body, there was at least half the jar left over.

2 oz. Blue sparkle – I’d highly recommend mixing this in to the latex (rather than applying on top) for your last coat or two. It gave the latex a really luminous sheen.

4 oz. Body Wash – Highly recommend this too! At the end of the night, it instantly helped remove the latex that was caught in my hairline and in my arm hair.

4 oz. Shine Spray – Must have! The website FAQs are absolutely correct. Rubbing on the shine spray as the last coat removed all the tackiness from the latex. Without it, the latex sticks to itself.

Liquid latex application tips:

Allow a lot of time! It took me a around 5 hours. That includes application and drying time.

Consider a layer of white latex. Since the latex is translucent, your skin color will show through if you don’t put on enough coats. In my case, I had to apply 5-6 layers of latex before it stopped looking blue/green. I think a layer of white latex would help tone down your skin color and only require 3-4 coats of blue.

2nd coat of liquid latex and it still looks greenish

Armpits are tricky. Once you do your armpits, you can’t put your arms down until you’ve applied the Shine Spray. The latex will stick to itself and will start ripping once you lift your arms. I don’t know how to improve that aspect.

Wow, it’s stinky. It’s especially hard to apply around your nose and eyes because the ammonia fumes are really harsh. If you’re allergic, it will not be fun for you.

A bit of a stranglehold. The latex will shrink and feel like wearing a tight rubber glove. It was a little alarming when the latex on my neck tightened. If you don’t like wearing chokers, you will not enjoy the feeling of latex on your neck.

Comes off fast…for the most part. As long as it’s not in your hair, the latex peels off really quickly. I had some stuck in my hairline, but rubbing on the Body Wash helped rinse it out quickly.

The Mystique Face

To make the scales on my face I cut out pieces of blue craft foam and stuck them onto my face with liquid latex. Then I painted over the scales with liquid latex.

To create the scaly face, I glued blue craft foam on, then painted over with latex.

The finished product!

initiation studies III - Panos Tsagaris

I wrote this article a year ago after hearing a constant thunder of Harleys riding down the expressw

I wrote this article a year ago after hearing a constant thunder of Harleys riding down the expressway for two weeks solid. The more I saw and heard, the more I was impressed with Harley Davidson’s marketing machine. Enjoy!

This Labor Day weekend, we experienced the genius of Harley Davidson’s marketing machine. For those of you in other parts of the world who were not kept awake by the continual thunder of thousands of Harleys riding down the road, let me explain. Each year, Harley Davidson Motor Company hosts an anniversary celebration in Milwaukee, which includes various satellite celebrations at dealerships throughout the area. In special years (say, every 5 years), the celebrations are that much more.

You may ask, “Marketing? This was a celebration — a phenomenon.” Exactly! Think about it, thousands of people traveled thousands of miles and spent a lot of money to celebrate their past purchase. There were events all weekend long in Milwaukee and at every Harley dealership where people gathered to socialize, admire each other’s bikes, buy more Harley merchandise, and (probably) plan their next bike purchase.

This did not happen on its own. It was a carefully orchestrated marketing plan that HD has worked over decades. While there are many facets to this marketing plan, there are two things that really stand out.

First: Mystique. People don’t buy a motorcycle when they buy a Harley, they buy an idea. There is a mystique about Harley Davidson that is unique in the automobile marketplace. I don’t know of any other vehicle that draws thousands of people from all over the world to celebrate it. Sure, some have fan clubs where enthusiasts will gather; but none have the same volume of fans. Over the last few decades, Harley carefully formed this mystique, saving the company from almost certain bankruptcy.

Second: Culture. Harley has built a distinct culture surrounding their product, which includes non-motorcycle merchandise that accounts for 5% of the company’s revenue. Rarely would you see someone riding a Hog that is not dressed the part. HD has carefully chosen their target market, and built their marketing around them. Sure, there are other motorcycles out there, but if you are in Harley’s target market there is no other bike to buy. Many who now can’t afford a Harley are waiting and aspiring to the point when they can join the club. And that’s just the point. Harley has built a community of people that espouse the culture that perpetually builds the mystique.

Of course, there are other products that build on these elements. Sports teams are the classic example from which Harley has taken many pages. A few teams have a unique cult stature, such as the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Cubs. What would happen if you saw these ads: “Two for One Deal at Lambeau Field!” or “Cheap Seats Available at Wrigley Field!”? It would be disastrous for their marketing!

So, how can you build mystique and a supporting culture around your product? What can you do to separate yourself from the competition so you no longer have to ask for the sale — so your customers are asking to buy from you? How would it be if you never had to explain your price, but that your chosen customers are grateful to pay any price just so they can be in your club? This is my challenge to all of you business owners. What is your genius marketing idea?

She modeled for the swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated, Victoria’s Secret, bebe, Miller Litebeer, and for Anna Molinari Runway, along with the famous Super-Models such as Claudia Schiffer, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, and Christy Turlington. She also was the host of MTV’s House of Style from 1998 to 2000. Rebecca is a fixture on annual lists of the world’s most beautiful women by publications such as Maxim (2003–2007), AskMen.com (2001–2003, 2005–2006) and FHM (2000–2005). She also appeared as a guest in the animated talk show Space Ghost Coast to Coast in an episode titled “Chinatown.”

In 2000’s X-Men, Romijn had her first major movie role as Mystique; she returned to the role in 2003’s sequel X2: X-Men United, and again for X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). In these movies her costume consisted of blue makeup and some strategically placed prosthetics on her otherwise nude body. In X2: X-Men United she shows up in a bar in one scene in her “normal” look, and also in X-Men: The Last Stand, she appears as a dark-haired “de-powered” Mystique. She had her first leading role in Brian De Palma’s Femme Fatale (2002). She also has starred in movies such as Rollerball, The Punisher and Godsend. She played the leading role in Pepper Dennis, a short-lived TV series on The WB. This series showcased Romijn’s talents for comedy, singing, modeling, drama, and adventure.

This is the market place, of my little town ,
You could traverse it up and down ;
To find for yourself or perhaps for a friend
A little trinket , an odd , an end…
Amidst the bustling , sweaty street ,
A few kind faces you are sure to meet
A few rare sights you’re sure to see
…A flamboyant crown on a dancing monkey…
…His tamer , his face consumed by a tumour….
His speech slurred , yet rich in humour….
Look up at the July sky and behold ,
Six rainbows at once and a ball of gold
The bangle seller , on the dusty ground
Women haggling all around …
Children running wild and free
Chase around the mango trees.
Throwing stones , throwing sticks ….
For a juicy mango worth the licks
A grey old man and his green parrot …
For a coin , will read your tarot
The saree seller arrives with pomp and show,
Flashing colours that dance , and shimmer and glow
“Two for the price of one !”- he cries out loud
Attracts a much bigger crowd!
A tea shop, the jeweller‘s, the confectionary store
One just wants to keep exploring more and more,
Of the dusty market so colourful and warm
Captivated by the sheer rustic charm…
I’ve seen the world , I’ve done it all ,
Seen cities great and small …
But in all the many different places ,
Never have I seen such happy faces ,
There are a few things in this life
That can be savoured sans the strife
And , I am richer it does appear
With the slice of life I’ve savoured here

p.s: This poem was written long, long ago in childish hand. I can still remember trying to put in words the sheer beauty of the buzz of a delightful stretch of market nestled in a nook of my hometown Chennai where the tantalizing smell of jasmine flower met sizzling deep fried savouries and the mystique of the roadside astrologer lingered in the senses as much as the sight of colourful yards of printed silk – blue, green, purple, red unfurling before the eyes. Years on, Im reliving each of those sensations of wonderment, curiosity and childish abandon as I transcribe my poem onto the web; though I wonder whether if the grown up me were to revisit the said market place today with its haggling vendors and unkempt urchins, I will actually pause to look or rather sidestep those grimy paths with an increasing sense of pathos….

I was doing my own research over the weekend and I thought I would share some cool movie costume ide

I was doing my own research over the weekend and I thought I would share some cool movie costume ideas that I found if your are a little behind on making your costumes this year. Here are the top 5 solo movie costumes that I have found:

1) Max

– This is my favorite costume idea for 2009. The movie is relevant, only being released on the 16th, and is easily craft-able, since you don’t need expensive cloth or metal to make it. It will most likely take a few hours to sew it together, but it the end it will look sick.

2) Juno

– This is an inexpensive costume that is sure to be a hit at any party you attend this year. (Homemade-Costumes)

3) Mystique or Rogue (X-Men)

– These will be a definite favorite at parties if you have to body to pull it off. If you can overnight the supplies after reading the instructions, I would definitely try and make this happen. (Mystique) (Rogue)

4) Harvey Dent/ Two-Face

– I loved the Dark Knight, and I loved Aaron Eckhart’s portrail of Harvey Dent/ Two-Face, so I instantly fell in love with this costume. It’s still timely since everyone still knows the movie, but this is probably the last year where you can easily pull it off. (Two-Face)

5) Edward Scissorhands

–This is just a classic, but I love it. It may take a trip or two to the Goodwill, but the end result will be worth it. (Edward Scissorhands)

RE: Assistance with experiment – TOP SECRET During a game of mini cricket today I hit a truly

RE: Assistance with experiment – TOP SECRET

During a game of mini cricket today I hit a truly sensational ball for six but unfortunately for us it went on the neighbour’s roof. Game over. However if I were able to vertically scale a building I would’ve saved the day by retrieving the ball and allowing the game to continue. As a result I have a proposition for you: We get one of your spiders in the lab (perhaps a red back for intensity or a daddy long legs if we want to keep it mellow), expose it to radiation for a few days then get it to bite me. I don’t know if that means it simply has to hang out near a microwave, or if it needs to be exposed to higher levels. Say a 4 week stay in Chernobyl. I’m not the scientist so I will leave the logistics to you.

If while you’re at it you could inject aspects of shapeshifting that would be good. Because there’s a place that sells quad bikes and if I looked like one of the sales assistants I’m pretty sure I could take it for a spin. Now I understand if this is not your area, perhaps you have a contact for a Mystique historian?

I just want to clear something up, I’m not just doing this so I can be a ball retriever because that would be silly. The simple solution would be to get a ladder I guess. But along with vertical/horizontal scaling, Spider-Sense will give me agility, speed, the ability to shoot webs from my wrists (I’m pretty excited about this one) and all the media attention. However I’m not sure about this last one because what I am proposing could be borderline illegal and if I went on Oprah you could get fired because of the ethical oath of Hippocratics that you signed.

If you could start on this ASAP that would help me out heaps – we have a rematch this Saturday and I’ll be damned if I’m replacing that ball.

Afterthought: Perhaps while the spider is being exposed we should play the entire discography of James Brown, Regina Spektor and Dr. Dre. We don’t want to fire it up too much and have it come out like Venom in Spiderman 3. I hypothesise the following ‘Chilled tunes = Chilled spider’ – this could be a possible entry into an academic journal. You can take the credit and I promise I won’t sue in 12 years time like that guy tried to do with Alex Lloyd and that s**thouse song ‘Amazing’.

Dude, Chad Ochocinco not only reads your blog but he’s been stealing your pick-up tips. He claimed to invent the “borrow a girls cell phone and call your own number” routine that you had published months before Hard Knocks was taped. -Maleman

I’m sure other people get good ideas, too. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. I posted my successful pick-up techniques so others could reap the benefits now that I am married. I won’t take an issue with the situation until he tweets that he invented “wingman goes first” or tells the story about how he kicked a little kid in the face for peeping on his lady in a dressing room.

Rush Limbaugh dropped by group trying to buy American Football team, thoughts? -Czechlist

I thought that his defense that he was an entertainer and just saying divisive things simply to fill a void in the market and garner ratings wasn’t much of an excuse. I certainly would respect him more if he believed in the things he’s talking about. Like saying hateful divisive things is okay, if you are doing it for the money. What kind of reasoning is that?

Poor Meghan McCain, I just saw her “controversial” pic. People are SOO lame. People are calling her a slut and stuff on her twitter because of this picture of her in a tank top. -loverslayer

I’ll be sure to feel sorry for an attention whore who’s just now finding out that all attention is not pleasant. Shes getting what shes asking for, and making herself feel better by blaming others. Up hers.

What movie monster/villain would you have sex with? -Triggah2K8

Mystique, hands down. She could be any woman you wanted for the evening, including any other villan you could come up with.

so do gay people get off by looking at their gay parts? -nivekkevin

Only the narcissistic ones.

I hate when someone is playing video games on TV or in movies. Can you possibly overact more? Who plays video games like that? Jesus. -Otaku21

And then they stop playing to have a conversation and the game is still being played by an invisible entity. That’s what kills me.

Who ya got on Top Chef Las Vegas? -phkb33

I still can’t believe they dumped Ash for cat food maker. I mean, obviously they kept Robin in because she breeds drama and she’s the only one giving it to them. So, she’ll stick around until the shows credibility is completely used up, which already might have happened in everyones eyes but the producers.

I take issue with Tom Colicchio giving Ash flak for complimenting the older twin, saying it was an honour to wash Picasso’s paint brushes. At least he’s honest. All the Italian Mike guy does is pump himself up and shit on everyone else, and he’s not better a better cook than Ash.

No one knew who the competition was until they got there. Is everyone who realizes someone is better than them supposed to drop out of the competition on the first day? Its Tom Colicchios biggest mistake in 6 years, if you ask me.

But to answer the question, Jennifer, Kevin and the twins, with Kevin and the older brother in the finale. Kevin wins it all. He’s awesome.

Hey Heene Family, awesome parenting. Be sure to leave a mysterious flying machine within arms length of your kids. -CanadiAnne

Questionable parenting, but legitimate engineering.

If you like Vice City more than San Andreas, it’s only because you are racist. -SkullandCrown

VC had better story and voice acting. But, that small advantage completely pales in comparison to the epic awesomeness that SA offered. If you prefer gameplay to storylines and voice acting, and claim VC is a better game, then you are likely a racist.

How much is the Roman Catholic Church including the Vatican worth? -infodeleted

In what currency? US Dollars? Italian Lira? 11 year-old penises? Blood of the non-believers?

whats your favorite film made before 1970? Mine is the Manchurian Candidate. -hezzbowler

Easy Rider, North by Northwest, Reefer Madness, The Sting? Was that pre 70? Or is the Black and White throwing me off?
