Mythbusters

I’m really not one for how-stuff-works documentary shows. As well as all the Hitler stuff, to my poncey writer eyes, Discovery Channel looks to be comprised of ex-Red Dwarf actors standing up a girder and telling you how it was built, or shows like Phil Tufnel’s Really Massive Engines. I’m one of those girly-men who can’t even drive, let alone take apart anything more complicated than a banana, but then I found Mythbusters.

It’s become a cliché to compare the hosts to the highschool science teachers you wish you’d had, but it’s a true comparison all the same. Adam is the excitable nerd whose enthusiasm doesn’t dampen even when he’s on fire, while Jamie is your friend’s stern dad who glares over the top of his newspaper while you muck about in the living room, then one day out of the blue invites you out into the yard to help him jam the lawnmower full of fireworks just to see what happens. Of course as a pathetic geek, I have to disgrace myself by mentioning Kari Bryon, in the vain hope that she Googles herself looking for ugly bloggers to elope with.

Seeing as the Mythbusters stay away from supernatural type myths like aliens and the lady with the lobsters up her chuff, don’t go expecting scientific confirmation on the existence of Errol Flynn’s scat parties any time soon. Instead, there’s a heavy focus on really cool stuff that nobody has ever had the means or insanity to put to the test before, like if you can open a safe with dynamite, if it’s possible to cut down a tree with a mini-gun (as in Predator), or whether a ninja really can run across the top of a lake. Obviously there’s no narrative so you can dive into any random episode and get right into it, but a great entry point are the movie myth episodes that dissect the reality of anything from James Bond to the wacky skydive fights in Point Break.

The show absolutely lives on the passion of the hosts, who have a clear love and understanding of what they’re doing, instead of the usual twattishly haircutted prettyboy foetuses that stink up prime-time TV with such a complete and total lack of anything that you could replace them with a few strands of hair glued to a paper plate and nobody would notice. Try and picture Mythbusters being hosted by that absolute fuck Vernon Kay. You can’t, the human brain has a coping mechanism that prevents such harrowing images from manifesting. I gave it my best, but there was nothing in my head but a burst of fuzzy static and the sound of a thousand anguished voices wailing for me to end their miserable lives. This is the era of hosts being chosen on the basis of a top 5 finish in the most recent I’m A Celebrity, or on having a name that could be used as a pun in the title, and of being sneered at for having the pathetic audacity to be give a shit about anything. “There’s a flowerbed, let’s smash it up!” Well, the Mythbusters do give a shit, and it’s glorious. When stoic man-walrus Jamie giggles with joy – usually in response to gargantuan near-Hiroshima explosion – you’re right there with him.

The endless contraptions they weld together are the kind of A-Team van big boy’s fantasies you know you’ll never have the skillz or opportunity to do yourself, so alas we must dream of a Willy Wonka style golden ticket give-away where the lucky winner gets to nose about in the workshop before inevitably getting yelled at by Jamie for touching a broomstick with a laser pointer sellotaped to it that’s actually a home-made rocket launcher capable of knocking the moon out of the sky.

As with most shows in this list, there have been so many episodes that it’d be impossible to start reeling off the bits that were great, because it’s all great, so for me, aside from all the really big bangs, the surprise of discovering – via the simple medium of a big hollowed out turd on a piece of string – that elephants really are afraid of mice – just like in cartoons – will stay with me forever. Maybe the enormous popularity of Mythbusters is partly down to the much needed swing in the last few years towards science and fact-based rationalism. Dawkins, Randi, the Nu-Atheism movement, and blowing shit the fuck up. Mostly though, it’s such a success because it’s just a fantastic show.

Status:

Gizmodo had their favorite line from President Obama’s recent speech about his “‘Educate to Innovate‘ campaign to improve the participation and performance of America’s students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).”  My own personal fav came from the President’s introduction of the Mythbusters crew:

“Welcome Mythbusters from the Discovery Channel…where are they? There they are. I hope you guys left the explosives at home.”

Geek in Chief, indeed.

I am going to be 100% honest: I’ve been working on this for over three hours now, and I hate every topic I’ve attempted. 2003 was incredibly uninteresting, especially considering that I am deliberately choosing to never include any of the poor decisions made by the Bush Administration.

At this point, I am so pissed off and frustrated that I am going to phone this in.

MythBusters is an entirely  superb television show that premiered on The Discovery Channel in 2003. I don’t want to undermine the work of Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman. They’re seriously smart men and their understanding of physics and science in general is nothing short of flabbergasting to me. On top of being huge science nerds, they also manage to be actually funny and possess a really uncanny ability to make even the mundane aspects of what they do enjoyable to watch. They deserve more credit than this is going to give them.

MythBusters explores the validity of internet rumors, urban legends and other popular beliefs, usually regarding ways in which things can explode or humans can die. Often this is done through elaborate experiments involving vehicles, water, explosives and fancy machinery that I am not allowed to use.

Basically, thanks to Adam and Jamie, and the regularity with which The Discovery Channel re-runs the show, I now have a great understanding of how difficult it really would be to blow myself up. (Or, in some situations, how easy it might be). The show thrives because the majority of us (the western world) are scared shitless regarding how we’re going to die, and we want to know if all the fucked up ways we hear are possible are legitimate.

Generally, the show tells me, the answer is no. A shark probably won’t kill me even if it tries, and I won’t get sucked into a whirlpool and die. In case I was worried that I’d die and no one would know about it, Mythbusters has informed me that even if my car becomes sandwiched between two tractor trailer trucks that collide head on, it will still be possible to see that i was involved in the accident.

Basically, MythBusters is an interesting show to watch. It’s good for killing time in a moderately intelligent way, and I used to enjoy viewing it between classes when I lived on campus.

CNNMoney.com recently did a series of articles based on research by payscale.com and found that 67% of those that lead worship or direct music in local churches for a vocation say the job is stressful. The research says this job is in the top 15 MOST stressful. Uhmm, this is obvious to those of us who lead worship, but to have research debunk the myth of the glamor of being a music guy/gal in a church might be helpful in fixing some things.

In the article we mentions how weddings and funeral musical work is stressful, but they really do not go to the underlying reasons I believe the majority of people in this vocation incur stress. Notice that senior pastors, youth directors and other ministry personnel are not on this list. While all ministry is stressful, something unique to this activity is in play. I say this with deep respect for those in other roles.

I fundamentally believe there is pandemic implosion of the worship leader role and vocation–even for the volunteer or bi-vocational worship leader. History shows this current pattern to be true (nothing new about worship wars for instance). Each week I talk with very talented people in this line of work and the same story is replayed over and over again. Every conference I attend, phone call or IM I field or observations I listen to by others has led me to consider a wide-scale threat. Glamorous you say?

Here are some unique mythbusting nuggets to consider:

• When there is conflict in a local church, the music becomes a rallying point for battle. Ever heard of the term “worship wars” in your setting? Well, guess who lives in the middle of that.
• Everyone has an opinion about the music and experience in a worship service, with the one who is leading the activity often being the only non-voting member in the discussion.
• Everything this person does is in public and executed through other people: choirs, worship bands, tech teams, etc.
• Leadership of churches often devalue the scale and scope of work to execute the quality and impact they expect.
• The skills needed include: creative and artistic genius, project management, musical talent, stage presence, theological facility, leadership, administration, ability to work independently, ability to be micromanaged and you have to look the part (whatever that means).
• In the push to be relevant to culture, the worship leader is only as relevant as the latest thing on one hand or if you have opposite views he/she must reject the latest thing. You can’t win either way.
• Spiritual warfare is heated in the activity of our public worship settings. So, obviously in that sense these folks are targets.

No programa do Discovery Channel exibido domingo passado, Jamie Hyneman e Adam Savage testaram uma história exibida na série Seinfeld, de que mergulhar novamente um taco já mordido no molho contamina o resto deste.
Já fui duas vezes em um restaurante tex-mex aqui em São Paulo, e me recordo que, curiosamente, mesmo nunca tendo visto aquela cena de Seinfeld até então, segui isso à risca. Mesmo tendo um molho só pra mim, e não coletivo.
O fato é que eu já estava esperando a cena ser mostrada através de desenhos, ou legendada. E só não caí da cadeira porquê estava sentado no chão: a cena, protagonizada por Jason Alexander, foi exibida dublada.

Há uma aura que cerca essa série, de que a dublagem desta seria “impossível”. Tanto é que Seinfeld já esteve na TV aberta: na Record, e legendado. Só que em um horário extremamente ingrato, cercado de programas da IURD (na época eles não ficavam concentrados na madrugada da Record).
Mas, fico aqui pensando o que aconteceria se, algum dia, Seinfeld fosse exibido pelo SBT… que já exibiu dublada a série The New Adventures of the Old Christine, com Julia Louis-Dreyfus, que foi uma das principais coadjuvantes de Seinfeld.

Há uns 5 anos, quando a redublagem estava em alta na Internet, um dos meus projetos era dublar alguma coisa dessa série, sem compromisso e à engraçado. Mas, se hoje em dia, eu não tenho tempo para as minhas produções originais, quanto mais para uma potencial bomba dessas.

Eu ainda queria ver essa série dublada _{[pretexto praa derrubar os servidores da WP de tantos comentários detected].} Afinal de contas, já foi dublado – e faz tempo – um outro desenho animado que eu achava que sua tradução seria impossível: Earthworm Jim, personagem vindo dos videogames, que, pra vocês terem uma noção, tenta resgatar a  princesa What’s-Her-Name, e luta contra a rainha Pulsating, Bloated, Festering, Sweaty, Pus-filled, Malformed, Slug-for-a-Butt ?…  Não sei como ficou em português, mas que traduziram isso, traduziram!
(Não sei por quê, mas tenho a impressão que o Google vai trazer vinte vezes mais pessoas aqui, e comentando em inglês…)

This is what I’ve learned from working at SNAP, and now I’m doing fireman’s shifts just to stay awake long enough.

Our story for today begins with me waking up on Sunday morning last, still slightly numb from getting out of bed only 25 minutes before church started. Everyone else was sashaying about the kitchen in wonderfully bright moods, while I was resentfully mulling over why the cinnamon in Cinnamon Toast Crunch can’t just stay on the cereal.

I was in my plaid flannel pajamas. Everyone else was in church clothes. My hair was sticking up in imaginative tufts. They were groomed. Things were not looking well.

Despite all that, I managed to leave on time. Listening to some Coldplay in the car helped, but it also led to the catastrophe of the morning.

When I got to church, I parked, checked my appearance, got out, and walked inside.

It was during the first song when I realized that I had probably locked my keys in the car.

Went back outside. My keys, and the Lego stormtrooper keychain that hangs from them, were still in the ignition. Door locked. Not good. Went back inside.

I went up to my friend Eli, who was busy arranging the PowerPoint slides for the music in ways that left a lot of room for artistic interpretation. I succeeded in distracting him, to everyone’s relief.

“Hey Eli,” I whispered, kneeling next to him. “You wouldn’t happen to have a coat hanger in your truck, would you?”

(I routinely go to Eli on the sorts of situations that would require interesting application of duct tape or high amounts of things that go bang. He’s kinda like our resident Mythbusters man.)

“I don’t think so,” he said, seeming to take mental inventory of the contents of his truck after he had gotten done snickering. “I’ve got my tool kit in there though, if you want it.”

I declined his offer. We’d have a crater in the parking lot if I tried to use anything from Eli’s tool kit.

I had several options at this moment. The easiest was to find a brick. Slightly more tricky was the whole coat hanger deal. I found one in the back of the truck, and starting jimmying the lock mechanism. I don’t think I got close to it, but I somehow managed to turn on the windshield wipers. I tossed that aside, and realized that I had another option.

I went looking for Buddy. I remember hearing some good snippets of the sermon throughout all this. I found him sitting in the next-to-last row, so I leaned over somebody and gave him a poke.

“What?”

“I need to borrow the truck.”

“What for?”

“Because I took the added precaution of locking mine in my car this morning.”

“So?”

“I’ve got a spare back at the house. (I thought)”

“Okay, sure, take the truck.”

So I skipped out of there, realized I needed a house key, went back and got his, drove the truck back to the house, got my spare set, and went back. I thought maybe, just maybe I could make the last song.

But: by the time I got there, the cars were streaming out like rats from a sinking ship. They just couldn’t wait for me.

The door unlocked, I got my keys out. And that was my Sunday morning.

Monday-Thursday:

• The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (Comedy Central)
  Both a news and entertainment source, I especially like how they don’t hesitate to point out the hypocrisy in anybody, red or blue, Fox News or MSNBC.
• The Colbert Report (Comedy Central)
  This is satire in its truest form.  No one and no thing is safe from Colbert.

Monday:

• House (Fox)
  Greg’s brand of sarcasm and wit gets me in the right place.  Only recently have I started caring more about the team than the weird diagnostic cases.
• The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
  This is our favorite show on television, hands down.

Tuesday:

• V (ABC)
  Though this remake just started, we’re pretty sure this show will be entertaining.  I’m worried about how long they can stretch it out, but it should be a fun ride.

Wednesday:

• Glee (Fox)
  This show proves that a musical comedy/drama on network television can not only work, but be clever and insightful.
• Mythbusters (Discovery)
  Educational and entertaining and they blow things up?  Sweet.

Thursday:

• Community (NBC)
  Half goofy comedy, half almost heartwarming.  Not the funniest show, but it has its moments of brilliance.

Friday:

• Stargate Universe (SyFy)
  Can one show fill both our Stargate SG-1 and Battlestar Galactica needs?  Looks like it so far.  Not as fun as SG-1 or as dark as BSG, it seems to run right in the middle of the two, which is great.
• Supernanny (ABC)
  These families make us want to not have children, but Jo teaches us what to do right.
• Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Cartoon Network)
  I’m the only one who watches it, but this show is impressive.  Better than the prequel movies, better than its own movie.  It’s almost real Star Wars.

Weekly:

• Indianapolis Colts Football Games
  I’d wanted to start watching the Colts for the last couple years, but it was only when my wife brought it up that we started watching.  Been an exciting season so far!
