Please forgive the notation style of this post. Quicker for you to get the info, faster for me to write. –brendan

More BANDWIDTH means the “computer” that you carry with you doesn’t need to have much storage space or processing power. a computer somewhere else can do all your processing and storage for you and broadcast the results to your screen. all you need is enough bandwidth to carry your user input off to the computer, and enough bandwidth to quickly carry audio and video back smoothly to your device.

+ Start with your wide-screen Cell phone

+ Add your home PC Computer remotely accessible OR maybe a Goolge hosted platform (yes its’ another effing Cloud)

+ Throw in some NASA subvocalization recognition technology http://www.magicspeedreading.com/subvocalization/nasa.html

+ Work together with Google Voice//Dragon Naturally Speaking to improve the quality of that silent speach recognition.

= your cell phone can control your home computer

+ NIA NIA http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/ocz_peripherals/nia-neural_impulse_actuator

= now your brain can control some features on your computer

+ MyVu stylish glasses that provide the wearer with a virtual widescreen (we’ll modify it to make it semi-transparent so that you can see the world and digital images together in front of you.)

= augmented reality. create an instant visual “chatroom” silently among friends in a room. brain selects nearby ppl to open a chat dialogue, you subvocalize the text, use your brain to send. they see it through their MyVu (nobody else can read it) and respond to you.

Prof asks “any questions”, and a silent room submits hundreds of subvocalized-to-text speech bubbles in the air above the heads of whoever is asking the questions. the prof skims the questions and eliminates uninteresting ones. then he selects excellent ones and copies them to the “board” which everyone sees at the front of the room through their MyVu. (of course, if someone fears censorship they simply choose to broadcast their question universally, not just to the prof). and everything that was on the board is available digitally to you later, because it’s stored in your computer at home, accessible anywhere through your cell phone’s high speed wifi connection.

take your augmented reality out on the soccer field for some real live WoW with (or without) your friends (both present and elsewhere)! others will see you as your avatar. Use NIA to throw fireballs, or whatever. etc.

I had never read a comic book in my life. But I did read Alan Moore’s graphic novel WATCHMEN a few months ago. It really is an incredible piece of work (as is Dave Gibbon’s illustration) that I thoroughly enjoyed. The movie premieres March 6. A memorable 03.06.09 if you follow the American date system.

One of our clients, Myvu has partnered with Warner Brothers for some exciting promotions including a contest to win advance screening tickets in select cities. There’s been a great deal of buzz on this movie already – with a huge fan base for the story.

We designed emails, a banner campaign and landing pages to support the promotion. You can also download Watchmen trailers and save on the Myvu Crystal Personal Media viewer if you find the secret word in the Watchmen trailer posted on the Myvu site.

Second Life will no longer be confined to a local network connection and your laptop. Have you heard that you can now access SL through your 3G mobile phone (or handheld Wi-Fi device)? It’s available through Vollee here. I was just sitting here thinking that while this is actually quite amazing, what will come next? What if you could access SL through your phone and view it through a video headset instead of on a tiny phone screen? Turns out that you already can. You only need to have Vollee installed on your iPhone or iPod Touch and purchase the new MyVu Crystal headset. This allows for almost fully-immersive mobile interaction with Second Life. Wow.

Nowadays people are walking computers. No one won’t come out their house anymore without having their favourite gadget along with them. Either it’s their iPod, mobile phone or even a heavy laptop.

I always bothered myself to view a video on my iPhone or any other small media device. First of all you have to hold it in your hand and second, the screen size is below my minimum, especially when I make an attempt on reading the subtitles.

Myvu is what they call a “Personal Media Viewer” or for normal creatures, a video glasses. Simply connect it to your portable media player and you are ready to go.

The engineers used Kopin’s Cyberdisplay technology to give you the crème de la crème of screen resolution and pixel density. The best of all in my opinion, is that it has built-in earphones from UItimate Ears, so you don’t need any other earphones to tag along.

Myvu mentions a 4 hour playback time, which is good enough to watch 2 movies.

The price of this beautiful piece of hi-tech technology is $299 and will be soon available on www.designgadgets.com

I’m completely unsatisfied with the portable computers currently available. So I’ve decided to do some articulate whining about how much I want a super-intuitive wearable computer.

Mostly, I have issues with the current form factors of Ultra Mobile PCs and other Pocket PC devices. Two improvements are just waiting to happen: improved input, and big screen.

Until we can have beautiful hologram images instantly created in the air in front of us, we should be able at least to have a virtual wide-screen. (And no, miniature projectors don’t quite count, because you still have to project them onto something.) I’m impressed with the new MyVu Crystal model, which is supposed to be like looking at a big-screen from about eight feet away.

But if you're reading this caption instead of looking at the picture, maybe image-viewing technology is just not your thing...

Since I’m dreaming about the perfect wearable supercomputer, I won’t worry about the price, so lets just go ahead and integrate something like this into the design.

Now that we’ve eliminated the need for our little portable computer to have a screen on it, we’re also not stuck with a squarish form factor. With laptops, they arrange all the other computer parts into a flat square because that way it can fold up next to the square-shaped monitor. Now, we can put our computer parts together however we want, in whatever shape, or even separate them or stretch them out.

They now have tiny pocket-sized computers with speeds and performance rivaling any full-sized desktop PC, and they expect you to operate it using a thumb pad?!?!? It’s ridiculous. I need at least nine fingers (the left thumb is redundantly placed on the space bar) to maximize my typing speed. Carrying a portable computer is supposed to increase your efficiency, not slow you down. And yet, typing a single e-mail or writing any length of text would take a prohibitively long time. And yet, carrying a full sized keyboard has two setbacks: it’s big, and you would have to set it down on a surface in order to use it. You can stand in line and type (albeit maddeningly slowly) on a device with a thumb pad, but not a keyboard.

So this is the tougher of the two major problems. Finding a way to allow the user 9-finger typing while standing, or at least without making them carry around anything much bigger than a cell phone.

They’ve made projection keyboards, but some people have described these as being hard to use, and anyway they still need to be projected down onto a desk surface, so you still won’t be able to type while you stand in line. Rubber rolling keyboards and hand sensors all fall to this same flaw.

These hand-straps look like a great idea, but without the visual and tactile feedback of hitting a key, its hard to believe that you could do much typing without there being too many errors for the text to be useful.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Voice recognition technology is still far from satisfactory, although it really is making improvements. Hopefully, once someone manages to improve it and starts to extend the application of statistical translation from foreign languages to computer instructions, computers will have an easier time figuring out what we want when we’re cursing at them, as well as allowing us to enter text as fast as we can speak.

Adding facial expression recognition and eye movement tracking will allow us to communicate more information to a computer (or to other people through a computer) in less time.

Even more interesting to me is the possibility of communicating with your computer by subvocalization (when you mentally speak words, “hearing” them in your thoughts) and also by non-verbal thoughts.

Photo by NASA Ames Research Center, Dominic Hart.

NASA has gotten some attention for their initial developments in detecting and making sense of nerve signals around the throat, which are analyzed and read by a computer as speech. Adding this technology should be able to enhance the clarity of voice recognition software, eliminating the need to rely upon microphones that often garble the message because of background noise. It would also allow you to hold a phone conversation silently, control key functions on your computer using mentally “spoken” commands, and dictate text clearly in noisy environments.

Here is a product called EPOC from Emotiv Systems. It is designed to be used as a gaming interface, reading the wearer’s facial expressions, levels of concentration and excitement, and several functions associated with moving and manipulating virtual objects. The intention to push, pull, rotate, or lift an object, for example, can be detected and conveyed to the computer. This would be the ideal gaming peripheral for fans of Star Wars games, allowing players to “use the force” in a more direct and satisfying way, if LucasArts will be willing to adapt the games for use with this device.

Beyond gaming applications, this device could also be used for standard user input. Folders or programs could be opened by “pulling” on them, buttons and links could be clicked by “pushing” on them, and web pages could be scrolled by concentrating on a desire to “lift” the text. If eye tracking were incorporated, you could specify to the computer exactly which icon or program should be the recipient of an instruction by looking at it while issuing your thought commands.

There is also the possibility of using these technologies to create “augmented reality” applications. Augmented Reality (AR) is when virtual reality objects are layered or incorporated into the real world. If you were wearing a semi-transparent virtual-screen in front of your eyes, you would be able to see the real world around you, and virtual objects could also be displayed to your eyes as if they were in the real world area that you were looking at. For example, an office could leave a “virtual business card” on the desk next to the physical business cards, and reaching for the virtual card would copy the information from the card into your digital rolodex.

Gamers could enjoy the ultimate 3D gaming experience by incorporating game objects or images into their real environment, allowing them to play with others outdoors, moving their physical bodies instead of using keystrokes to control the body movements of an avatar. A combination of player types could exist in the same field, too. A virtual environment playing field (eg World of Warcraft) could be established in a public park using WiFi and cameras. Some users would enter the park physically while wearing an AR system to be able to see and interact with virtual characters, objects, and materials. Other players who are not physically in the park, but would still like to join the fun could also send their avatars to play! It would almost be like the Star Trek Holodeck, only lacking the ability to interact physically with virtual objects.

As long as we’re interacting with AR, lets throw some WiiMote technology into gloves and shoes, allowing games to take into account the speed and force of gestures (eg punching, throwing, kicking) to make the physical aspects of game interaction more complete. Video games could provide wonderfully entertaining physical exercise!

As these technologies continue to develop and improve, hopefully they will shrink in size and grow in battery life. Integration of several technologies together into a single “enhanced user interface” could expand human-computer interaction bandwidth considerably, allowing us extended and improved use of our portable digital powerhouse devices.

I was reading through RollingStones magazine a couple weeks ago and I saw an interesting add for something I’ve never seen before. Its called the MyVu Person Media Viewer, it pretty much plays a movie for you in a pair of sunglasses. They are pretty chic in terms of style (NOW we know why Jordy LaForge wore them in Star Trek!), and apparently MyVu uses certain crystal viewer technology in their devices.

These things certainly look like the next wave in future personal media. The price at the moment is pretty steep ($300 USD), but as they come down within the next couple of years I’d expect to see more people on planes, trains, and buses with them. Now even though you can’t exactly see through this device, one thing it does offer is the ability to look down at the video playing on your viewer, so when you look straight ahead you can see what is going around you still. They can be plugged into almost any brand name portable media device, which gives it some great utility.

However cool these things are though, some people may take it too far, as stated on their website “When you own a pair of Myvu Crystal glasses, you can get up close and personal with the action on your Apple iPod’s screen.”- Cincinnati Enquirer ” …how up close and “personal” do you really need to get with your ipod…seriously? What the hell is going on in your ipod that makes it so friggin awesome you need to use this device to get “up close and personal” with it? We’ve got enough people touching themselves at library computers thank you, lets not spread it to planes and buses (I omitted trains because…well, lets face it, the battle for trains was lost along with libraries).

Overall though these do seem like some pretty awesome gadgets to take care of some of lifes dullest moments, and we’ll probably be seing lots of them sooner rather than later. Eventually we’ll probably see computers in the form of crystal view devices as well, but that might be a tad farthur off…or is it?

i know this is old news, BUT. does it perform as well as it was advertise. Don’t get me wrong this freaking thing just won an award for being the best eyewear for video up close. but i thought i just check if these claims were in fact true .

The model in here is the Solo Plus model,it retails for 199.95$ and it’s the low end model of the my-vu legacy. you can choose any other pro or standard model you like from their website.

i found this toy when i was shopping for a new iPhone earphones, and i spotted this on my way out. First impression wasn’t very satisfying, i got cross eyed for a while before i could get used to it. the quality of the video wasn’t as well as it was advertised but hay; it’s only the low end model right ??

Never the less here is how it works;

There are two little lenses that you’re suppose to look through, both lenses point to a single little screen that is placed right in the middle of the eye wear. The screen doesn’t cover the wide angle of the human eyes, better yet, it feels like your watching a small old TV across the hall. It lacks any sense of fashion, better yet when you wear it it feels like the seventies again. On the other hand, the type of plastic used feels pretty sterdy and yet soft for the skin.

The technology seems to be inexpensive, having such a small screen with crappy resolution. plus, there is no logical explanation that i could find for this product to be so over priced.

As a conclusion, unless they come up with a better solution than the two lenses aiming down to one little screen, this bad looking boy won’t get any further, HD and wide angle speaking.

that’s my review on this model, but have in mind that this is only the low end model and the least ridiculous shaped one too .. got the My.VU’s website for more details

Enjoy,
