Nokia abandoning S60 for Maemo on future N-Series devices?.

According to The Really Mobile Project, Nokia will drop S60 from all of its flagship N-series consumer devices in favor of Maemo. Apparently, Nokia has been pleasantly surprised by the enthusiastic response to the N900 OS even though the enthusiast package is not quite ready for mass-market appeal. Mind you, the transition won’t be instantaneous as anyone with an N900 (and a clear mind) can attest.

Nokia y Telefónica han anunciado hoy que ofrecerán, en exclusiva en España, la solución Nokia N86 8MP Comes With Music, que permite a los usuarios descubrir una nueva forma de disfrutar de la música desde su móvil Nokia N86 8MP o desde el PC. Los consumidores que accedan a “Comes with Music”, a través de su Nokia N86 8MP CWM de movistar, podrán disfrutar de las más de 5 millones de canciones de Nokia Music Store, sin preocuparse del coste de las canciones y sin límite de acceso durante un año gracias a la tarifa plana ilimitada de Internet en el móvil Plus de movistar. Las canciones se podrán conservar tanto en el móvil como en el ordenador una vez finalizada la suscripción.

Nokia N86 8MP Comes With Music estará disponible en exclusiva con movistar desde 0 euros a partir del próximo 20 de noviembre. Así, por ejemplo, contratando cualquiera de las modalidades de Planazo 29,90 euros de voz, y un compromiso mensual de 15 euros de datos, el móvil costará 29 euros tanto para clientes que provengan de otra compañía como para nuevas altas. En el caso de que el compromiso mensual sea de 59,90 euros de tráfico de voz (contratando el Planazo Global) y 15 euros de datos, el Nokia N86 8MP CWM costará cero euros tanto en portabilidad como para nuevas altas.

“Los usuarios pueden conocer y descubrir toda la música que deseen de manera sencilla, sin tener que preocuparse por el precio de cada álbum o canción, desde el móvil o el PC. La simplicidad y la libertad de uso son algunas de las características más destacables del servicio CWM”, afirmó Alberto Matrone, director general de Nokia Iberia.

“Este acuerdo entre Nokia y Telefónica refleja el compromiso de ambas compañías por ofrecer siempre a los consumidores españoles los servicios más novedosos en el mercado,  con las ofertas más atractivas”, señaló Marieta del Rivero, vicepresidenta de Nokia para la cuenta global de Telefónica. “Y en este sentido, la respuesta que hemos tenido siempre del consumidor ha sido altamente positiva, por lo que estamos seguros será la propuesta favorita para estas Navidades”.

Para Federico Rava, director general Residencial de Telefónica España, “Con este nuevo lanzamiento Telefónica cierra el círculo de la música, tanto para móvil como para PC, para sus clientes. Gracias a Comes With Music de Nokia, revolucionamos el mercado de la música digital, ya que por primera vez un operador en España comercializa un terminal de música asociado a un servicio ilimitado de descarga de canciones y con una tarifa plana de navegación también ilimitada”.

Telefónica siempre ha sido pionera en España en la comercialización de nuevas propuestas de música para los clientes. En 2002 la Compañía fue la primera en vender tonos reales en el móvil. En 2004 lanzó el primer servicio móvil de descarga de canciones completas. Good news for Nokia users who carry an N-Series or E-Series mobile phone. You can now download the Google Mobile app for your Nokia phone and search Google using simple voice commands.

Google Voice Search app is location aware so you don’t have to mention the name of your city or locality when using location specific queries like “nearest chinese restaurant or “hospitals”.

The Google voice search app is integrated with Google Suggest but in addition to regular search queries, the voice app can also auto-suggest websites so you reach your favorites sites more quickly as you no longer have to type the full address of a domain.

In addition to Nokia S60 phones, Google Mobile App with Voice Search is available for BlackBerry, iPhone and Android based mobile devices.

This is one more example of interfaces that will help people jump the technology barriers through better use of technology itself. Considering the huge potential of the Indian telephony market, expect more applications like this as they tap into new audiences time and time again.

Nokia ha anunciado hoy la nueva actualización del software 2.0 para el Nokia N97, que añade nuevos elementos a la experiencia del usuario y funcionalidades al dispositivo, así como diversas correcciones que los usuarios estaban demandando. Durante las próximas semanas, esta nueva versión estará disponible gradualmente en todos los países y se podrá descargar, de forma gratuita, a través del PC . En España, la web de Actualización de Software  de  Nokia  (Software Updater) es  http://www.nokia.es/soporte/software/actualizaciondesoftware. Habrá versiones diferentes según cada operador, así como también la posibilidad de hacer la actualización sin necesidad de conectarse al PC, directamente a través del móvil con conexión WiFi.

This time, our friends at Proporta sent us the new Alu-Leather Edge Case for your Nokia N97, and we will do what we only know, review it!

The retail package is the regular Proporta case of the silver envelope with the extremely resistant plastic window, this way you can be sure that the case won’t be crushed at the mail, or courier service. Opening the box you will find your beloved case and dude, there’s only one word to describe the case: beautiful. The materials are of extremely good quality. The outside has an elegant black leather and the inside is lined with cream color leather. I’m a fan of leather and this one doesn’t upset me in any way. Touching the leather is really a pleasure to the senses and I have found my self just rubbing my hand on the leather because of this. Sexy, I know!

The N97 sits on a specially designed cradled that clips on the border of the keyboard. The whole case skeleton is made of extremely hard plastic that warranties extra protection, the clips around the keyboard are of the same material and are so strong that it can be very hard to clip or unclip the phone without a good trick, also I found the clips a bit too thick and sometimes the phone hinge won’t close at the fullest because of them.

The cradle has cuts for every port, except the 3.5mm jack which is blocked by the top clip that closes the front flap. This is a shame for the music enthusiasts, who will surely miss their music when using this case. In order to connect the jack, you have to partially open the flap.

The screen is protected by a vertical flap that clips on the N97 top. This flap clips with considerable streght and I would suggest you to push the screen downwards while unclipping the flap, to avoid any extra stress on the hinge. On this flap comes the Alu part of the “Alu-leather” name. This flap has inside an aluminium sheet that protects the screen from hits and pressure. So don’t worry about your beloved screen, it is extremely well protected by this extra strong sheet. Believe me, I have tried to bend it with no results.

Every other function of the phone is conserved, the keyboard can be openen without issues and the phone will sit normally, also you can answer a call while bending the flap outwards, or when using the camera you can pull the flap downwards so it doesnt block the lens.

On the other side, this beauty adds considerable bulk on the phone, something like 7mm, the same is for the weight, so I guess you won’t be carrying your phone in your skinny jeans pocket.

In conclusion you will love this case if:

-you don’t mind unclipping the flap to connect your headset.

-you love stylish cases

-you love leather

-you are looking for excellent craftmanship

-you are looking for the most protection you can get (aluminium sheet, plus leather)

-you don’t need belt clips.

All you gadget fans out there and even the normobs must be familiar with the legendary handset that came out from Nokia’s stables around 30 months ago, it was christened the N95 by them. Its was a legend then, and even is now but a lot of devices match it or better it these days.

Back in May 2007 when i became a proud owner of the Nokia N95 it was the best mobile phone that the market had. It beat it rivals by miles and no other phone could come near it in term of features. It had all what one could imagine. It had the following list of features that were till then unseen in any mobile device:

• The first mobile phone that had a 5 Megapixel Camera that was a very  good performer
• The first mobile phone that had 3.5G to be commercially launched, means it could do 3.5Mbps even in 2007, Wi-Fi, UPnP
• The first mobile phone that had a built in GPS receiver.
• Ability to render a desktop alike browsing experience(in 2007), with flash support
• The cool dual way slide form factor
• The in built accelerometer
• The first phone to support N-Gage
• Full set of media software, with all audio and video codecs, video and image editing suites, online integration
• TV out for video echoing of any application or media item to a TV or other video equipment
• Large 2.6 inch screen
• Facility to work in portrait or landscape mode

Back in 2007 it was a very impressive feature set and had left the competition gasping. The N95 was at the epitome of convergence. Nokia had done what no other mobile manufacturer at time could even imagine. It was mile ahead of the rest. But this also led to loads and loads of expectations from Nokia with each of their impending releases. The next in line flagships from Nokia were not even remotely as path breaking products as the N95.

The next in line were the N95-8GB, which was essentially the same phone but with 8gig on memory on board, bigger screen and battery, but nothing much to add to the feature list apart from these upgrades.

Then came the N96, it had even bigger onboard memory at 16gigs and the ability to add more via a Micro-SD card. This one even had DVBH support in built, and a newer version of the Symbian 60 OS, but apart from these it was similar to N95

Then came the N97, much hyped and anticipated. It had a 3.5″ full touch screen, a QWERTY keyboard and 32gigs of on board memory, but apart from these it had all that n95 had way back in 2007.

Nokia with these phones seems to have fallen behind the competition. The competition has better camera phones at 12 Megapixels, Xenon flash and the ability to record HD video. They competition also supports faster versions of HSDPA 3G network while Nokia is still stuck at 3.6Mbps, the one that N95 had two years ago. On the software front also the Symbian OS has not evolved as much and is felling the heat of competition from Apple and Android OS. Even Nokia has announced the N900 with Maemo(Linux based) OS.

Nokia which once was at the pinnacle of making the best mobile device which had the best convergence features in the shape of N95 has now fallen way behind others. The legacy of N95 has come to haunt Nokia as all of their devices will be compared to N95 for their ability to add new features and make the mobile a better convergence device.

This a new free theme by Nahid. It supports S60V3 and S60V5 handsets.. This theme is really cool and shall give your handset a new look and feel. The icons used in this theme are also beautiful.

Discovered Nokia’s viNe service the other day and it’s tripping me out.

Even if we’ve gone on in our lives to flatter and shinier things, I think my generation will always have a bit of a soft spot for Nokia because their basic phones were pretty much THE thing to have as your first phone back in the day.

We’ve also seen huge developments in the internet and mobile technology. So when I saw this on Nokia’s website:

This is taking blogging and sharing your life to the next level (and almost asking to be stalked, really).

My question is…do people really want that?

Already there’s a facebook backlash where people are discovering that having your entire life accessible on the internet can cause big problems. Social norms are still trying to catch up to the new political dramas of what you can write on other people’s walls, not to mention a tale of group membership being used for a character reference in court.

Nike did have some success with GPS-assisted trackers when they collaborated with Apple, but at least there it was for a purpose – helping the niche market of hardcore runners to track their personal progress or participate in races.

However, viNe seems to be aimed at the masses (as much as the number of people who can afford the N series can be called the masses).

What purpose does it achieve for them? Sharing their life?

viNe is a little more like being electronically stalked.

I can only think of a few uses…

a) You’re on holiday.

b) You want to be stalked.

c) You’re really, really bored.

None of these occurs every day (maybe with the exception of b) which means very few people will get into the habit of using it – which is why nearly a year after it was announced it seems to have joined the rapidly growing pile of internet junk.

It disappoints me because I do have that soft spot for Nokia and it’s a cool concept, but I can’t see a lot of benefit – for consumers or the company.

Nokia Braille Reader es una nueva aplicación desarrollada entre Nokia, la Universidad de Tampere, y la Federación Finlandesa de deficientes visuales. El resultado es una aplicación creada con la intención de mejorar la accesibilidad, concretamente representa una gran ayuda para la lectura de mensajes SMS a ciegos y deficientes visuales.

Esta aplicación captura mensajes SMS recibidos y los coloca en primer plano para su lectura en Braille ayudándose para ello de la retroalimentación táctil.

La aplicación debe ser abierta previamente para que esté alerta a los mensajes entrantes, pero funciona en segundo plano sin molestar en el resto de actividades, lo ideal para personas con este tipo de deficiencias es colocarla en la barra de acceso rápido de la página de inicio.

En el momento que nos llega un mensaje se abre la aplicación, que no es más que una ventana con varias zonas, una superior con el texto y un botón grande para empezar a leer el mismo, y una zona intermedia que vibra un par de veces al ser tocada para ver que el programa está en funcionamiento.

Por último tenemos la zona inferior desde donde podremos ocultar la aplicación de nuevo, cerrarla o entrar en la configuración, todos ellos confeccionados con botones de tamaño considerable.

Cuando solicitamos que nos lea el mensaje, entramos en una nueva pantalla en la que se nos presentará el mensaje carácter a carácter, si dejamos pulsada la pantalla el lector irá punto por punto definiéndonos si es negro o blanco dependiendo de si la vibración es mayor o menor, y de esta forma conformar el carácter en Braille.

También podemos volver atrás o ir hacia adelante en los caracteres con las teclas de volumen, y cuando termine el mensaje se producirá un zumbido largo.

Nokia Braille Reader es compatible con los dispositivos basados en S60 5ed edición, entre los que encontramos el Nokia N97 y Nokia N97 Mini, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, 5530, 5230 y X6.
