My Maudlin Career, Camera Obscura’s fourth studio album was released second quarter of the year but I’ve only managed to give it a listen over the weekend. At ang ganda ganda ganda as in.

It only looks ill-advised to place French Navy, the album’s tightest cut, as the first song, as it somewhow dwarfs the subsequent tracks.

I was checking out AJ’s YouTube Channel and stumbled upon his collaboration with AHMIR (the group that delivered Beyonce’s Halo in a very cool accapella style). And so I drift to memory lane.. ah..

Con apenas 27 años, mi relación fallida con el sudafricano no era gran cosa. Lejos estaba de ser una solterona y ya aparecerían otras oportunidades. O al menos eso creía yo.

Comencé a recibir comentarios muy extraños que me hicieron dar cuenta que para muchos yo ya había pasado a engrosar la lista de las solteronas.

La primera fue la mamá de una amiga que ni vien me pelié con John me dice: “Bueno, tenés que apurarte a encontrar otro porque cuanto más tiempo pasa, después queda lo que nadie quiere”  ¿lo que nadie quiere? Como si encontrar pareja fuera lo mismo que ir a hacer las compras al supermercado… Me hizo acordar a aquel video de n-snyc en el que estaban disfrazados de Kens y querían que una chica los comprara…

Unos meses después fui a hacer una suplencia a una escuela y me encontré con mi maestra de inglés de segundo grado. Me pregunta como estoy y bla bla..y en eso me pregunta “¿te casaste?, cuando le dije que no, respondió, “Bueno, hay que conformarse con lo que nos da la vida”. Yo no pensaba que nunca me iba a casar ni pensaba en conformarme con nada. Pero por alguna razón ella pensaba que para mí ya era muy tarde y la verdad que me dejó medio mal.

Poco después el papá de un amigo me pregunta sobre como iba mi vida amorosa. Al saber que no iba para ningún lado mira su reloj (supongo que pensando en mi reloj biológico) y me dice “mirá que se te pasa el tiempo”.

Al mismo tiempo que recibía estos comentarios tan alentadores mi mejor amiga se había comprado una casa y estaba por irse a vivir con su novio y comenzar una familia. Imaginen como me sentía cuando yo no hacía más que encontrarme con gente que me decía que se me estaba haciendo tarde y ¡que me iba a quedar sola como un hongo!

I don’t know why I thought of the topic but I was thinking about jitter rings and tamagotchis. I remember when they both came out back around in 1996 or 1997, when I was 8 or 9 years old, everybody had a jitter ring or a tamagotchi or both. Anyway, it brings back back memories to my childhood and early teen years. There’s so much stuff that I can remember from those years. In addition to the jitter rings and tamagotchis, I remember music groups like Hanson, B*Witched, etc. I also remember when *N SYNC, the Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, etc., were extremely poplar by using the bubble-gum pop that they were originally known for. Anyway, all of those things just made me think back to my tween and teen years.

Um grupo desconhecido vai ser mais familiar quando eu dizer que apresento a vocês o passado de Justin Timberlake! Inicialmente o grupo era formado por Lance Bass, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick e Justin Timberlake. O nome escolhido pela mãe loira de Justin “N Sync” seria uma abreviação de “Em sincronia” (claro, isso em inglês!).

A boy-band adotou a mesma estratégia de Back Street Boys e lançou o primeiro cd ‘N Sync somente na Alemanha e Holanda, depois passou a ser sucesso em toda Europa (Ps.: N Sync era uma Boy-Band Estaduinense!) e os principais sucessos eram: I Want You Back e Tearin’ Up My Heart.

Depois da gestação de 9 meses uma gravadora investiu num cd com músicas natalinas (com direito a “Jingle Bells”!), o album foi chamado “Home for Christmas” (Ps.: Aposto que foi o Natal mais POP! da vida deles!).

O álbum No Strings Attached depois de ser disputado pelas Gravadoras BMG e a Virgin foi lançado em 2000 e quebrou o recorde de discos vendidos na semana do lançamento com 2,4 milhões de exemplares. O álbum misturava Pop, dance e Hip-Hop com destaques em Bye Bye Bye, Space Cowboy.

Em 2001 A banda lançou Celebrity que brincava com o mundo dos famosos. A musica Pop estourou nas paradas e o disco vendeu nada mais do que 5 mil copias na primeira semana. Outras faixas também fizeram sucesso como: Girlfriend, Gone e Selfish.

Agora a banda já não existe, Justin Timberlake faz carreira solo dançando Single Ladies e a vida continua!

Ed eccoci ritrovati qui a RadioBlog 235 dopo la pausa caffè, il prossimo artista che vi propongo è Justin Timberlake. Come ben sapete, il nostro caro Justin non è solamente un cantautore, ma anche attore, ballerino, produttore musicale e pure televisivo.  Insomma, chi più ne ha più ne metta. Come sapete, Justin faceva prima parte della boy band ‘N sync, che si scioglie nel 2002, anno in cui Justin presenta il suo primo singolo Like I Love You. La canzone che vi propongo adesso però è tratta dall’album del 2006   Future Sex/Love Sounds, ed è proprio la traccia n. 1, quella che da’ il titolo all’album che adesso andremo ad ascoltare.

Parece ser que esta es la semana de las boy bands de los noventas, porque apenas ayer escribí un post sobre uno de los integrantes de los Backstreet Boys que le estará eternamente agradecido a la influenza por volverlo a poner en el mapa y hoy estoy haciendo lo mismo con Lance Bass, ex integrante de *N Sync. Tengo que confesar que ninguno de esos dos grupos me gustaba mucho que digamos y en realidad ninguno de sus miembros me parecía atractivo, pero tengo que aceptar que en esta foto Lance está haciendo que tenga pensamientos impuros así que respondiendo a la pregunta del título: yo sí me lo echaría con Bye, Bye, Bye como música de fondo. Y el hecho de que está fuera del clóset lo hace ganar puntos extra.

Oh yes, it is a Christmas blog in October

Yesterday morning I awoke at the ungodly hour of 8 am to go on a very successful climbing trip. My friends and I were more than a little stoked about the fact that the temperatures in TN have recently dropped faster than the Titans’ pride. It was during said trip that I realized how close we are to winter and the very best time of the year. Call me premature, say I’m rushing, but I am already more than a little excited about christmas.

Now the  pessimists out there will undoubtedly point out that there are still two major holidays before christmas arrives, (and yes I am sorry that I am not taking into account all religious holidays, but this is my blog so I can do that). Well let’s examine these two holidays. First up to bat, we have Halloween. Yeah, Halloween was fun when we were 8 years old and the prospect of a trash bag of candy was beyond our comprehension, but ever since we outgrew the ability to “trick or treat” things just haven’t been the same. Sure, some of us held onto our tricking and treating identities with a desperate fervor comparable only to Brett Favre’s colorful last few seasons. (I bet the people who handle his retirement fund HATE him!) But for those of us who have moved on to lame costume parties and semi-delinquent  behavior, Halloween is a sorry excuse for a holiday. For one night, we all gather around under the pretense of scaring each other and dressing up in strange ways. Maybe I’m just spoiled because we do this every night at my house.

Then there’s thanksgiving. Now I’m not even going to try and hate on thanksgiving because it’s awesome, but it’s just the warmup. (I also don’t buy the whole Native Americans and pilgrims thing. I just don’t see how the pilgrims made time in their busy scheduling of killing and destroying to sit down and have a nice meal.) Either
way, thanksgiving is nice. The meals are great, the family is usually pretty enjoyable, but it’s no christmas. Thanksgiving is our national “eat and do nothing day” which is ok because it’s patriotic (or something like that). Thanksgiving is a pit stop on the way to Christmas.

Christmas is the most….. magical, wonderful, fragrant, joyous, fantastic, beautiful, loving, warm occasion that human beings allow themselves to experience. Don’t believe me? On a frigid night, weeks (or days) before Christmas, find someone you love (doesn’t matter who, but preferably a romantic interest). Then take that person to the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN. Don’t arrive until 9 pm at the very earliest. Then proceed to walk around as slowly and aimlessly as you can possibly manage. Take time to soak in the lights and atmosphere that will engulf your very being on a level which is nothing short of spiritual. Allow yourself to be transported back to a time when you believed in magic. A time when Aladdin was a real boy and when the nutcracker really kind of scared you. Watch the people and way they hold each other around that time of year. Especially look for an older couple holding hands. I promise they will be there. Watch the way that they look into each others eyes and if you don’t feel that warm feeling boiling up inside you then immediately proceed to an auto shop because you’re obviously a robot from the future and you need mechanical attention.

Christmas is amazing not because of the gifts, not because of that one day when you rush down the stairs to find your favorite toy, not because of the snow. Christmas is amazing because of the month or so leading up to it when the magic molecules in the air are more numerous then the hydrogen molecules. When you see people on the street in their coats bundled up for warmth and for that split second you are friends. Christmas is just as much about the taste of hot apple cider on your frozen lips as it is about the tree in your living room. Christmas is wonderful not because it is a holiday or event, but because it is a season. Christmas is wonderful because it is a celebration of the most important birth in history. My theory is that love is so present around christmas time because Christ’s birth signified the beginning of real love on earth.

So maybe I am starting the christmas season a tad bit early, but that’s just the way I am. I plan on pulling every last morsel of goodness out of this christmas season. If you are still skeptical, bust out the old christmas CD and see what I’m talking about. I know you have a favorite christmas CD, everyone does. If you’re looking for one, I’d like to suggest “Christmas- All Time Greatest Records” also ‘N Sync’s “Home For Christmas” is just splendid.

1. One of the single funniest websites I’ve come across is Awkward Family Photos.  The title tells the story.  Your life will be more complete by visiting this site.

2. Gerald Hiestand of Harvest Bible Chapel (home of renowned preacher James MacDonald) has the best single piece I’ve seen on the pastor-theologian.  Seminarians and pastors, this is a must-read.  If you have a good mind, do not assume that you should teach.  Maybe that’s what the Lord has for you, but the church very much needs gifted pastors who can serve as theologians in some capacity.  It’s so good I’m linking to it twice.

3. Some good quotations from writers on writing.  In my opinion, too many evangelicals, particularly reformed evangelicals, write solely to communicate.  We need people to write for that reason, absolutely, but we should also value writing as an end, not merely a means to an end.  We’ll talk more about this some other time.

4. Tim Challies has done a great series with Burk Parsons of Ligonier Ministries (R.C. Sproul’s ministry) that is nothing less than engrossing. (I give you part four of four cause it has all the links.)  Parsons was asked to be a member of both the Backstreet Boys and N*Sync (did I do that right?).  Precious few of us in the evangelical world, particularly the reformed slice of it, can claim that…

5. Thong underwear for a seven-year-old?  Methinks not.  Dannah Gresh of the excellent Girls Gone Wise website writes a thoughtful piece on the matter.  She makes two great points that I noted: 1) Real change comes when Christians weigh in on these matters (see what happened with Abercrombie, detailed in the article) and 2) Christians need not be solely negative in such campaigns (as shown in her drive to support stores that refuse to sexualize youth).

Arriving late on Friday VJ Eggatronix was kindly accompanied straight to the Vapor Stage by Mr Alex Bloc Weekender. After being introduced to a ladder and told to climb it or get out, Eggatronix had to overcome his vertigo for the sake of providing top swatch entertainment. After a few quarts of the hour watching VJ Ralph Pixel work his magic on his Addict server, Eggatronix proceeded to serve his slot from 10pm till 1am by pushing buttons and looking very busy clicking things, frowning and shining a torch at cables and button boxes.

At 1am an even more amazingly talented VJ went on to perform a blinding set to what I think was the Digital Mystikz. Not sure who played that set but would really appreciate it if they say hello. Eggatronix was in such a rush he forgot to purchase a program so he didn’t have a vague idea who he was VJing to or with?
Eggatronix went on to play at 2am and then on and off till 5am when he then went back to back with VJ Ralphy P till 6am.

“Firstly I was assured there would be no weather at Glade but there was. Secondly I’d like to say I really got on well with all the VJ’s but wasn’t sure why VJ Ralphy P had his face pixelated all the time. It really messed with my eyes and stuff, and it also proved hard to recognise him from afar in the latter part of the festival. If anyone knows who played on Friday please let us know. I think it was David Clarky Cats finishing with Billie Bob Nasty. First time I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the addict server, it’s like seeing Tron for the first time. Also had the pleasure of meeting Collin, wicked.”

Again, looks like an amazing time had by all and it seems that thanks to all the musicians, festival crew, organises and most importantly the VJ’s for all their amazing visionary visions in digital forms like .mov, .avi and .addict-server the festival was a big glory pie to the masses.

I was watching My Big Fat Greek Wedding the other day. Anyway, I was watching the part where Nikki and Angelo are fighting. It reminded me of my best guy friend, who I’ll call Bob. It reminded me of us because we fight like we were brother and sister. Plus he can infuriate me and B-Shawty, you know why. I won’t really get into how but I know that he cares for me like a sister. Anyway, other people who have seen us interact have also said that we fight like we’re an old married couple like Miracle Max and Valerie from The Princess Bride. I think what it is is that we’ve known each other long and well enough to know what ticks each other off and what buttons to push, etc.
