AVO-kurssin 6. viikko käsittelee (käsitteli) valokuvaamista. Se onkin minulle entuudestaan tuttua, olen napsinut fotoja älypuhelimellani ja laittanut niitä Flickriin jo muutaman vuoden ajan.

Yleensä en kuvia ole juuri muokannut, toisinaan olen käytellyt GIMPiä lähinnä kirkkauden ja kontrastin säätöön mutta melkein useammin käytän nykyään Flickriin upotettua Picnik -kuvankäsittelyohjelmaa joka toimii suoraan selaimessa. Yksinkertaiset toiminnot, kuten rajaus ovat kaikkien käytettävissä. Maksullisena ominaisuutena on lisää jippoja, esim. clipartia ja monimutkaisempia säätötoimintoja. Olen ostanut itselleni Flickrin pro-tunnukset, mutta Picnikin maksullisia ominaisuuksia en ole käyttänyt. Puhelimessani (Nokia N95) on myös kuvankäsittelyominaisuuksia, mutta niiden käyttäminen on niin hidasta että olen lähinnä käyttänyt niitä joskus rajaamiseen ja muutaman kerran lähettäessäni kuvia sähköpostilla tai MMS-viesteinä.

Kirjastopäivät 2009–paneeli

Vastikään käytin GIMPiä koostaakseni yksinkertaisen panoraaman Kirjastovirkailijapäivien paneelista. Päivät olivat itseasiassa aivan juuri, viime viikolla. Panoraaman pohjana on kolme kuvaa. Muita Kirjastovirkailijapäiviin liittyviä kuvia en Flickristä löydä, enkä netistä muutenkaan. Vaikka kirjastoissa onkin kyse ennen kaikkea julkaisuista, eivät kirjastolaiset itse ole kovin hanakoita julkaisemaan netissä. Ei ehkä tule mieleen, niinkään.

Tämän kuvatehtävän yhteydessä voisinkin mainita, että yksi parhaista, koskaan nälemistäni oppiresursseista on You suck at Photoshop. Siinä käsitellään erittäin herkullisten ja hienosti kerrottujen tarinoiden kautta Photoshopin kehittyneemmistä ominaisuuksista. Fotari tulee itse käytettyä erittäin harvoin, mutta samat perusperiaatteet ovat johdettavissa kuvankäsittelyyn yleensäkin. Jaksoja näkyy nyt olevan jo parikymmentä. Helmeä xD

Julkaisemissani kuvissa käytän miltei aina Creative Commons Nimi mainittava-Sama lisenssi -lisenssillä. Stressaannun ellen taggaa kuviani. Olenhan kirjastolainen!

Siution Pyhän Pietarin kirkko

Wikimedia Commonsiin, Wikimedian yhteiseen mediakirjastoon olen kerran laittanut yhden kuvan, testimielessä. Se on kuva Siuntion kirkosta jonka kohdalla pysähdyin pyöräilyreissullani Helsingistä Lohjanjärvelle kesällä 2007. Muistan että olin vastikään hankkinut itselleni N95-älypuhelimen, ja olin oikein innoissani siitä että saatoin samaan aikaan lukea karttaa, tallentaa matkanopeuttani ja -reittiäni GPS:n avulla, kuunnella podcasteja ja näpsiä vieläpä valokuvia pienellä, taskuun mahtuvalla laitteella.

Minulla on mielikuva että Wikimedia Commonsiin kuvien laittaminen oli jotenkin vaikeaa. Muistaakseni se liittyi lisensseihin, taisin haluta käyttää ei-kaupallinen -lisenssiä. Tuo rajoitus ei ole yhteensopiva Wikimedian käyttämän lisenssin kanssa, joka ei salli kuvien rajoittamista vain ei-kaupalliseen käyttöön. Laitoin kuitenkin kuvan tuonne. Nykyään suosin itsekin liberaalimpia lisenssejä, jotka eivät rajoita kuvia vain epäkaupalliseen käyttöön. Näen tuolta Wikimedia Commonsin sivulta, että Siuntio-kuvani on jopa käytössä!! Rumahan tuo kuva n, mutta Bulgarian-, saksan- ja englanninkielisissä Wikipedioissa kuva on koettu hyödylliseksi. Hienoa

Cilvēks ir diezgan mobila būtne un tam ir dažādas vajadzības. Dažreiz ir vajadzība pateikt sabiedrībai kaut ko svarīgu vai pilnīgi bezsakarīgu. Cik saprotu ar iPhone ir vienkāršāk – tas jau iznāca, kad, piemēram, Twitter jau bija ieguvis uzticību un popularitāti, līdz ar to arī šī lieta varētu būt mazāk aktuāla. Bez tam personīgi man tā šobrīd šādā griezumā nav aktuāla it nemaz, jo man nav īTelefona, man ir pāris gadus veca Nokia N95 un pat bez tiem visiem gigabaitiem. Bet dažreiz, kad pārvietojos vai neesmu tuvumā datoram arī kā Nokia lietotājs vēlos ietvītot kaut ko, bet caur kurieni? Opcijas bezmaksas kategorijā ir vairākas un piedāvāju dažu aplikāciju īsu apskatu…

Nedaudz vispārējas informācijas – programmu atrašanai un uzstādīšanai izmantoju OVI STORE. Tas tagad Nokia-prāt ir pareizais veids kā likt programmas.

TweetS60 (Mana izvēle)

Šis, manuprāt, ir labākais no bezmaksas Twitter klientiem priekš Nokia. Nav nekādu parmērību dizainā, diezgan maz resursus prasošs. Šodien atverot un pārbaudot aktivitātes par 2 dienām – tika patērēti, apmēram, 50 kb. Patīkami, ka var uzstādīt vairākus tīkla pieslēgumus, kurus izmantot prioritārā secībā, ieskaitot Wi-Fi. Lai gan, visticamāk, atrodoties kādā Wi-Fi zonā cilvēks vai nu nezinās piekļuves paroli tam, vai arī lietos datoru. Bet nu vienalga var izrādīties kādreiz noderīgi. Praktiski visas nepieciešamās funkcijas, izņemot darbu ar sarakstiem (lists). Patīkami, kad pēc aizvēršanas atver nākošo reizi – programma neielādē visu no jauna, bet tikai atsvaidzina sarakstu, līdz ar to nav jāskatās lietas, kas jau ir apskatītas. Kā arī var uzstādīt, lai tvītu atjaunošana būtu vai nu automātiska vai manuāla.

Līdz ar to, ka šī ir mana ikdienā lietojamā programma, iespējams es neesmu īsti objektīvs, jo pēc pāris minūšu domāšanas varēju nosaukt tikai divus trūkumus – nav iespējas apskatīt profilu tvīta rakstītājam, kā arī nav iespējas apskatīt/rediģēt savu profilu, it kā mani tas sevišķi netraucē, bet nu kas nav tas nav. Tā kā es atsevišķi nedarbojos ar sarakstiem, tad mani īpaši netraucē, ka tam atsevišķi nav pievērsta uzmanība pagaidām. Varbūt kāds to varētu uztvert kā mīnusu.

Rezumējums pāris teikumos – ja vajadzīga ir tikai Twitter programma ar ko aizpildīt robus, kad neesmu pie datora, tad mana izvēle ir TweetS60. Ja vajadzīgs kaut kas vairāk par Twitter, tad izvēle varētu būt starp Fring un starp Snaptu. Ja ir vajadzīgs Skype atbalsts, tad Fring.

Le jour où j’ai acheté ma 360, c’était une journée de merde. D’abord le fils de pute de connard de sa race de vendeur qui me dit « Pourquoi vous prenez pas une PS3 ? C’est mieux. Elle est mieux. Les jeux sont mieux. » Non mais je préfère les exclus Crosoft en fait. « Ah, je vois, un fanboy. » Mais go fuck yourself ! Rentré à la maison avec mon Pack CoD 4, je m’aperçois que la console est modèle de l’année précédente. Je retourne en ville, avec la 360 sous le bras et j’exige un échange contre un modèle plus récent, ou un remboursement et j’irai me démerder. La commerciale Crosoft jointe au téléphone me dit qu’elle ne peut pas reprendre un pack ouvert, même jamais utilisé. Que de toute façon, mon modèle ne surchauffait pas, ne faisait pas de Red Ring Of Death (signe de la fonte interne des composant). C’était ça ou saboter le lecteur DVD pour simuler une panne. Je suis rentré chez moi. Deux ans plus tard, à 4h16 du matin ce mardi soir, ma bobox rendait l’âme.

Y’a des semaines comme ça, où le karma vous poursuit, vous jette dans un fossé avant de vous rouer de coups avec ses bottes cloutées. La veille, alors que j’étais peinard à m’écouter la setlist de DJ Hero sur mon bien aimé N95 8Go, le téléphone s’est mis à littéralement pété un câble. Il hurlait à la mort tandis que l’écran clignotait et que toutes touches du pavé semblaient être appuyées en même temps, jusqu’à ce qu’arrachage de la batterie s’en suive. Flashforward jusqu’au lendemain, où les deux ados en survêt’ de la boutique de réparation de mobile m’ont donné leur verdict. « C’est mort mec, je sais pas ce qu’il a. On l’envoie à Nokia. » Et je le récupère quand ? Dix jours à peu près ? Oh, donc dans le meilleur des cas le lendemain de mon départ sur Lyon. Fuck it. Non, mais, sérieux, Fuck It. J’ai perdu dans la même opération mon téléphone portable, mon lecteur MP3, mon GPS et mon appareil photo. Bienvenue dans le monde de la convergence numérique.

Alors que mon Nokia vole vers la Finlande ou dieu sait où, je dois renvoyer ma Xbox encore sous garantie au centre de réparation en Allemagne. Y’a qu’à la mettre dans un carton et appeler UPS pour qu’ils vienne me la choper gratuitement (et me la rendre deux semaines plus tard, quand je serai à NY, epic lolilaule). Problème, le seul carton que j’aie, c’est celui du modem Numéricable de location. J’ai très envie de céder à ma pulsion d’ironie mordante. Mais à tous les coups c’est le genre de blague qui va me retomber sur le coin de la tronche d’une façon ou une autre. N’empêche qu’être privé de Modern Warfaire en plein milieu de la campagne solo, c’est pute. Tout comme me retrouver à NY sans GPS/téléphone, obligé d’acheter une merde prépayée sur place pour coordonner mes déplacements avec mon pote. Puis comment je vais tenir les journées seul sans mon MP3 chéri ? Sans parler de l’avion et de l’attente en arrêt au port.

Au final je sens très fortement que je risque de me racheter un téléphone, ou, pourquoi pas, un petit netbook à 300 keuss pour survivre (et bloguer ?) pendant le voyage. Ceci étant dit, il me reste mon disque dur 360 et mon gamertag est stocké en ligne. Tout comme j’ai réussi à faire une sauvegarde totale du N95, contacts, SMS, photos. Pendant que nous autres humains continuons à crever comme des merdes, l’âme de mes machines survit à leur mort. Le genre de considération qui me maintient éveillé les nuits sans lune où je tourne dans mon lit au lieu de jouer à Call Of Duty.

Entre les garanties et les sauvegardes, je vais m’en tirer sans trop de bobos. Disons que ça tombe juste au pire moment possible. Fais chier. Vivement demain qu’on cause ciné, ça me détendra.

Does the picture on the right look familiar to you? Of course yes! It’s a Nokia Mobile Li-Ion Battery.

Recently, I noticed that my mobile phone battery is discharging at a faster rate than before. I’m quite sure many of you have faced this before, so I decided to dig more into this topic to know what could be the reason behind this fast discharge, and how to get rid of it. I will also provide you with a simple circuit that can be used to charge any Lithium Ion battery which can be constructed easily.

Surfing through the web, you will find some general tips to save the more power of your battery, and I think most of us are familiar with, so here are some of these tips:

Turn unnecessary applications or modules off. Modules like : GPS, Blue-tooth, Wifi, screen brightness, etc. consume a lot of power as well as applications.
Make sure to update the mobile firmware regularly, usually manufactures add new features to reduce power consumption.
Use batteries at rated operating temperatures. You can refer to my old post to know more about this subject.
Charge the battery fully and make sure to discharge it completely.
Clean the battery contacts on the battery, and inside phone. Over time, contacts may accumulate dirt.
Stop searching for a signal. When you are in an area with poor or no signal, your phone will constantly look for a better connection, and will use up all your power. The best way to ensure longer battery life is to make sure you have a great signal where you use your phone.

To me, the above list sounds trivial and I assume many people knew it before, but here’s something new which can be applied to gain more power out of battery:

If you are using Nokia, then use Nokia’s Power Saver option – Nokia gives you a default screen saver in your mobile phone which switches on your backlight to show its features etc. This is actually not needed to anyone, and it also eats up your battery without any benefit for you. Just turn this Off by activating Power Saver option On and set it with a minimum time so that the backlight turns off and your screen shows just the Date and Time.
Use a single mode of network – There is an option of GSM, UTMS or Dual mode of networking when you go to Tools > Settings > Network settings. You should select any one network, not the dual-mode of networking, as you are already using a GSM SIM and need just that network to connect. The other modes are battery eaters, as many suggest.
Your favorite theme? Have it in your phone memory – Only if there is some space in it. A small theme that you are using in your mobile, would be there On for all the time. And for this, the mobile system has to be connected to the memory card and receiving the info about it. Why not keep it in your phone memory and keep the 2 systems(Memory card and phone system) not connected? This would save some battery for sure.
Never charge your battery for more than 14 hours
Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad) batteries suffer from an affliction known as the memory effect. The battery will only charge to the level of which the battery was last discharged due to an accumulation of gas bubbles on the cell plates. If a battery is discharged to 30% and then recharged, the battery will only charge to 30% of its capacity and thus shrinking the battery’s “gas tank.” So the best approach to overcome this problem is by draining the battery until your portable phone shuts off, and then recharging it.
If your battery used to last 8 hours and now only lasts 2 hours, it could be memory effect or just time for a new battery. NiCad batteries last approximately 700 charge/discharge cycles, or about one and a half years on average. However, NiMh batteries will normally last for only approximately 400 charge/discharge cycles.

Now, let’s get our hands dirty by designing a simple circuit that will charge any lithium-ion battery.

I found a nice charging IC by Texas Instruments with P/N: BQ24050DSQ with 800mA, Single Cell Li-Ion Battery Charging With Automatic Adaptor/USB Detection.

This looks interesting so let’s open the datasheet and see the application note which contains the following circuit:

Just make sure you follow design notes on how to select the values of the limiting resistors because these resistors will set the maximum charging current for your battery. Download the datasheet of bq24050. This IC costs about $3.6 which is cheap and can be shipped easily using DigiKey.

Swine flu is infecting people all over the world, and new reports are suggesting that these bio-weapons (flu’s) are being used for political reasons. Some believe the first target is ukraine because there is a lot of news that isn’t being released right now specifically about ukraine. Thankfully russiatoday has some alright reporters that are supplying information. In ukraine there are over 1,000,000 people with some respitory illness, and at least 200 deaths have been reported. It isn’t officially named yet but some reports are calling it pneumonic plauge because of the symptoms and effects on the respitory system.

My advice to you if you are reading this blog is to make sure you get yourself a n95 fly mask, they are extremely effective at containing and stopping the spread of the virus through containing and filtering the air you breathe in and what you cough out. There are plenty of website’s that sell the n95 mask’s and make sure it’s n95 it’s the only one that is blocking these new weird swine, h1n1, pneumonic plague strainds because the n95 blocks all particle’s that have any moisture attached. Also make sure to bring hand sanitizer anywhere you go in public and if you touch any doors handles shake peoples hands make sure you use it 100% because after people have been vaccinated some are carrying the disease, and can still pass it on to you if you haven’t been vaccinated. The information community is mostly assured that this pandemic is actually being spread through aerisolized forms being sprayed over cities in urkraine to disinfect, or infect the communities, and for example in the united states it has started to pick more case’s up since the beginning of the vaccinations about two weeks ago. One county away from me has had 400 new cases of h1n1 in the last month, and is it a coincidence or not that it happend right around the same time everyone started getting the vaccine?

Google Apps y Mail for Exchange

Desde hace unos días ya funciona perfectamente la sincronización del correo electrónico entre Google Apps y Mail for Exchange en mi Nokia.
Únicamente hay que activar una opción en Google Apps.

En Administración del Dominio hay que ir a la solapa Configuración del Servicio y elegir la opción Móvil. Una vez dentro, hay que activar la opción Habilitar Google Sync

The Nokia N900 camera is really quite good. In fact, even with pre-release firmware, it walks all over the competition!

It’s no surprise. The N900 comes from a long lineage of great 5 megapixel phones from Nokia, such as the N95 and the N82. It features Carl Zeiss optics (with auto-focus and macro), a dual LED flash, and a sliding lens cover – as such, it’s virtually identical to the N97 camera…

The UI is especially polished. Of course there’s geo-tagging and auto-rotation, but it’s easy to tag and share pictures via Flickr, Facebook, or Pixelpipe. Contrary to other smartphones (and like cameraphones), the N900 camera is an integral part of the device, not an afterthought.

The N900 takes very nice pictures (slide show), with excellent color balance, exposure, and level of detail. But there’s room for improvement, especially in low light. The sensor is a little too noisy at times (shades of N96) – hopefully this can be fixed in a future update.

And then there’s video recording. With a resolution of 848×480 pixels at 25 fps, the N900 is in the same league as the Motorola Droid and the Samsung Memoir. It also features initial auto-focus like the iPhone 3GS

Sony Ericsson C905 - Camera Phone

I’ve had this phone for just over 4 months and am already counting the days until I’m due an upgrade! I must admit when I chose it I was dazzled by the 8.1 mega-pixel camera, which does produce some very pleasing shots, but otherwise the phone is disappointing. I may have been spoilt by moving over from a Nokia N95.

At a glance they have similar specifications and dimensions; slider type phone, reasonable size & 240×320 resolution screens, GPS, wi-fi, bluetooth, good cameras with flash, video recording, built in accelerometer etc. However, with the exception of the camera, the C905 falls behind the Nokia in every respect! This in spite of the fact the N95 was launched nearly two years earlier (Sept 2006). The C905’s bespoke operating system (as opposed to S60 used in the Nokia) seems to be its main limiting factor; although it may look like one and be priced like one the C905 isn’t a “Smartphone”. It will run some additional software but so far I’ve only managed to find a rather motley selection of Java applications. Luckily one of these is Opera mini browser – which although being the most cut down of Opera’s offerings is still vastly superior to the built in browser (this may not be entirely Sony’s failing but to some degree be down to 3 hijacking it). My old Nokia was crammed with applications including some relatively practical ones such as an Office Suite. The C905 seems incapable of running anything similar.

Another annoyance is a fault my C905 has developed – it can take a couple of minutes to come out of sleep mode. This might make me sound impatient but as well as the frustration of waiting for it to wake up, when someone calls I can’t see their name or number – the only way to find out is to pick up – in the same fashion as a 1970’s Bakelite landline! I’ve called my service provider (3) and been through the palaver of a full reset. This didn’t fix the problem but its a great way to lose all your personal settings. When I’ve got half a day free I might give them another try! If I remember I’ll let you know how I get on!

Okay the C905 isn’t awful but in my opinion the camera isn’t quite good enough to make up for its other deficiencies. I’m now kicking myself for not waiting a couple of weeks for the launch of Nokia’s N97.

Nokia N97, a solid upgrade from the N95

I’ve been playing with my new Nokia N97 and am so happy I stayed with Nokia and didn’t venture off to iPhone or Palm Pre land, or even N900. It’s an awesome device. I LOVE THIS PHONE!

I just upgraded to the v20 firmware. The phone came with v12. The only major visible improvement is kinetic scrolling. This may sound like a meaningless “for show” feature, but it really does make navigating easier and more fluid. Long press of keys to get alternate characters is nice.

I’m sure there are a lot of N95 owners, like me, wondering if they should get the N97, go with the non-touch N86, or just abandon an N-series for Appleland. Well, wonder no more. The N97 kicks all other phones’ rears. I’ll try to touch on a lot of the issues I was anticipating. Happily, for the most part, my fears ended up being unfounded.

I know there has been a lot of pooh poohing the touch interface with S60 5th edition, but, generally, I think they did a pretty good job. There are a few instances where it’s difficult to navigate through an older apps UI by touch, but in those few instances you can just flip out the keyboard and use the D pad old-school style. I suspect, apps will soon adopt a 5th-ed version as some have already done.

Unfounded Fears:

Resistive touch screen: It not as fluid as capacitive (iPhone), but OK.
Responsiveness: Reasonably responsive, but can get sluggish when you have a lot of apps running–maybe Apple is right Similar to N95 experience, however.
Keyboard: It is fine! The positioning of the spacebar is easy to get used to. Easy to type on.
D Pad vs (N97 Mini’s arrow keys): It works fine and I haven’t encountered any issues. Just use your thumbnail–as I did on N95. In fact, I’d say it’s easier to use than N95’s equivalent.
Virtual T9 keypad: Might be easier to use than the N95’s physical keypad which requires a much harder push
App compatibility: Most of the apps I used on N95 have a S60 5th ed. compatible version.
One-handed use: You can still use it comfortably with one hand. However, since it lacks many of the N95’s physical buttons, it usually takes several more “clicks” to accomplish some tasks.
Size: It’s fairly compact and not really that much larger than iPhone.
3G with same SIM: It worked fine using SIM from non-3G N95. (I never notice that it actually said 3G on the SIM
Lens cover scratching: Doesn’t appear lens cover design is different than the one that can scratch the lens based on what I’ve seen on the Net. I suspect that the natural tendency to push down and slide may contribute to the problem, so I’m going to try to remember to slide it from the side with my fingernail. Based on this video, it doesn’t look too difficult to swap it out should I need to down the line.

Nice Surprises:

Charges through USB port. No more proprietary power connector.
Less camera shutter lag than N95
The msg reader app is very neat! It will read SMS messages out loud.
Telexy’s VPN app is very cool. I was able to transfer files from a Windows share on my home network over the Internet to my phone! Their Remote Desktop Client works too, but not sure how useful it is on the small screen.
Initially I really missed T9Nav. It’s an app that lets you quickly find anything on your phone. The developers say a 5th ed version is not due until March! However, I found that HandyShell from Epocware has a similar feature. The difference is that it is based on what you actually type and not T9 (i.e., phone keypad) input. Since the N97 has no physical phone keypad, it works well. Of course, this means you have to use the keyboard. There is also a built-in search app that will globally for things.
Opera Mini works wonderfully on N97. I still don’t like the way the built-in browser’s Back function always takes you to a list first.

Tips, Tricks and Stuff:

Get the black version. The white keyboard on the white version has white keys and back-lighting can make the keys hard to see. Hopefully they will allow you to turn off the backlight manually in the future, which would fix the problem.
Watch the WiFi use since it can drain the battery quickly.
If you are used to the iPhone’s capacitive touch screen, the N97 requires a slightly harder press. If you don’t, you’ll find that it may interpret your touch as a click instead of a drag.
Beware of cases that have a magnetic clasp. I didn’t realize this and every time I would take it out of the case, the camera app would go on–even if it’s in standby! I believe it thinks I opened the lens cover. The N95 had a similar issue. I went to one of those Mobile accessories carts in the mall and tried a couple out. I found one that works. I is also magnetic, but for whatever reason it doesn’t set the camera off.
Leave the screen protector on! It’s always a pain to put on an aftermarket one and you never get all the bubbles out.
If you have to use the scrollbar on long lists, use your fingernail. If you use your finger, it tends to scroll a little as you lift your finger.
Speed dialing (aka 1-Touch or One Touch) doesn’t work if the number has parenthesis or dashes (spaces appear to be OK). Just take them out of any speed dialed number. If you don’t, you will get an “Invalid Phone Number” error message. This only affects speed dialing. If you select a number with parenthesis from your normal Contacts, it dials fine.
As I stated above, it may be best to slide the camera lens cover from the side using a fingernail instead of pressing on it and sliding. Should help to minimize risk of scratching.
It can get confusing when using the side unlock button because it doesn’t also make the display come on. It is best to turn autolock off (Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone mgmt > Auto. keyguard) Then, just use the side lock/unlock button to lock/unlock the keypad manually.
Set the Light time-out (Settings > Phone > Display > Light time-out) to as short a setting as tolerable to save battery life.
For Google Reader, MojoStudios appears to be on the verge of releasing a dedicated app. Can’t wait to try because the browsers don’t seem to format things perfectly. Even the Google Reader Widget For The N97 is just ok. Direct link to widget here.
I also have an iPod Touch 2nd gen which satisfies my iPhone lust. ‘Course, since I have an N97 I can use it as a WiFi hotspot to get Internet access Also, I use my Touch to access my work Exchange email, calendar, etc. and use my phone for my personal equivalents. I like to keep them segregated.
Automatically scale an image before it gets uploaded Flickr. Go to Applications > Share online. Highlight Flickr and press Options. Choose Edit and then sSet Upload image size to medium.
Epocware makes a lot of…well..handy utilities. They are on the pricey side for S60 apps. Fortunately, I had a 30% off coupon, so I just popped for the Handy Tools Pack. Some apps I’ll never use, but in addition to HandyShell, I like HandySafePro for storing sensitive data and HandyProfiles which lets you automatically switch Profiles based on time and even location.
If when you press the Back button from the Music Player, it goes directly to the Standby screen, try this: Connect via USB cable and delete the following directories inside “private” on drives E and F: 101ffc31, 101ffca9, 10281e17. Do a refresh. Doesn’t seem to “stick”, however.

Email:

I’m using LonelyCatGames’ Profimail email client. It is arguably the best (only?) email client that supports HTML email. The build-in email client sux in a big way.
I’m also trying out the new Nokia Messaging. This *service* accesses your email on their server and then syncs it to your phone. This is a little unnerving because you have to give your email password to Nokia. That said, it is by far the best S60 email client I’ve used. HTML email looks beautiful! It features Blackberry style “push” email, so you get notified of new messages and they can be automatically downloaded. (Personally, I don’t like this for email.) They are rather vague about how much this service will eventually cost and honestly I’m not sure how much I would pay. Here’s the FAQ. One thing I do not like is the 10-folder limit which for any heavy gMail user is not nearly enough. Profimail has unlimited.
You could also use the GMail app from http://m.google.com instead of web-based client, but I’ve never liked this on a Nokia device.

C Drive Debacle:

The N97 has two storage drives, C and E. Free space on C is very important and there is not very much of it. However, Nokia has seen fit to store and have all kinds of things load on there and you will likely have problems very quickly.
It’s SO stupid when you consider that it’s got gigabytes of built-in storage on the E drive! I’m thinking this will be fixed with firmware, but it doesn’t look like it made it into v20.
I copied over unused files to my PC and deleted a bunch.
A great way to see which files are installed on C is to use the App Manager (Settings > Application mgr > Installed Apps). A list will all installed apps will appear with how much space they take up. If you don’t see the icon to the right, that means the app is installed on C. You can delete by selecting and then deleting from the Options menu. Make sure you have things backed up or can get the install files later if you need!
Also, go to the Ovi store and see which (free) apps are available there that are pre-installed. Uninstall them from the phone. Then, download and reinstall to the E: drive. Examples include Bloomberg, AccuWeather and AP News. This will free up several megabytes.
If you upgrade to v20, it really does free up more C space if you do a hard reset which wipes *everything* off your phone. To do this, on the keyboard just press caps shift, spacebar, delete, and then press the power on. Back up first and be prepared to reinstall all your apps.

Disappointments:

v20 firmwire:
- got rid of Podcast-specific Recently Added list! WTF!
- Back button on Media Player often goes back to Standby screen, not library. Look like a bug.
Battery gets eaten up real fast if you do a lot on the phone.
Uses micro-USB connector instead of more universal mini-USB.
I miss the many physical buttons on the N95, like pencil, C, top left and right, and multimedia.
Browser (including Opera Mini) doesn’t have the smooth experience of the iPod Touch/iPhone. Also, Google mobile sites don’t work as well.
Inconsistent use of single and double-tapping. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell if something isn’t happening because of a lag or you need to click again. I suppose I may get used to it. If you think about it, Windows isn’t always consistent either. Sometimes it’s single click and sometimes it double.
Application UIs are not always touch or “finger friendly”
Letters on backlit keyboard can be hard to see if it’s not dark
Needs a better application launcher with more customizable spots.
Won’t pair with my work Bluetooth dongle, but I think it’s a Vista/Nokia issue. Works fine on XP machine at home.
Copy and Paste using keyboard is missing. Jeeze!!!

Quais são as vantagens?

Este teclado é muito maior que o padrão Nokia / Samsung, um botão pode ter mais de 5 caracteres (caracteres extras são exibidos na tela tocando e arrastando). Para cada modalidade (paisagem e retrato), existem 7 tipos diferentes de teclados (selecionável com um botão): Inglês qwerty, qwerty Internacional, ABC teclado, de modo numérico, o modo de edição, tabela de símbolos, a seleção de dicionário.

Como instalar?

Para obter o resultado da imagem acima, basta instalar o arquivo SIS que está localizado dentro do zip (em anexo) DayHand_Input_by_Mr._Milk_unsigned_6.2.0017_r2.sis. Se já existe uma versão instalada, desinstale-o antes de instalar o novo e se você tiver instalado com características chinesas pacote selecionado, e lá ele funciona, tente novamente para instalar o recurso está desativado.

Como utilizá-lo?

Após a instalação certifique-se apenas de reiniciar o telefone. O teclado estará em operação após a reinicialização, basta escrever uma nova mensagem para o teste.

O processo de instalação faz o Opera Mini (Retrato) Huge e Opera (Landscape) os esquemas predefinidos. Se quiser experimentar o estilo de layout ou o iPhone original deve fazer o seguinte:

Interesting, huh?

My work, which is very important in the scheme of things to both me and my company – if I can’t work well, then it costs lots of $$ – gives me the most basic phone I’ve ever seen and a base spec business laptop. Actually, I’m not complaining about the laptop, it might be basic, but it works fine, I just need a bigger harddisk – 50G these days for demos and virtual machines is waaay too small. The phone on the other hand, is embarrassing.

My home setup technically isnt that important (as in I don’t need it to pay the mortgage etc) – however it does keep me in touch with my kids on skype which is pretty important, and I also use it for my photography obsession to process photos and more recently, for writing children’s books. So, this largely non-essential use and I manage to have a hugely better spec machine (and oh so shiny too) than work. My phone is also muuuch better than my work phone and more appropriate (calendar/3G/email sync etc).

I’ve never had particularly good work laptops and I’ve always had to compromise in what I want to do -surely thats an oxymoron!

Recommendations for those NOT taking the Flu Shot

I think taking the swine shot is a good thing for most of us. But if you’re not taking the shot then you should follow the following advice:

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it’s almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. “Hands-off-the-face” approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (except to eat or bathe).

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don’t trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected o ne. Don’t underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at using a Neti pot to clean nasal cavities, but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5.. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.
