…I really liked the outcome for this one. It was cute and fun to color…and I’m pretty satisfied witht the color pallet. I tried experimenting with more textures in the picture which was pretty okay. It’s most obvious in Miharu’s muffler, but if you squint, you can probably see a bit on the leather part of his jacket that’s holding the buttons. owo I kinda want a jacket like his.

SPOILER ALERT for those who haven’t watched this anime yet.

I just finished watching Nabari No Ou. Different from the ones I usually watched, have a somewhat dark undertone to it. It’s about ninjas and their secret arts, and how ordinary people are unaware of their existence. The story revolves around Miharu Rokujo, a very apathetic kid, who suddenly finds himself in the middle of an on-going conflict between warring ninja clans. Miharu discovered that he possessed inside him Shinra Banshou, the most powerful secret art that contains the knowledge of the world. The story also focuses on his relationship with Yoite, who uses the technique Kira that costs him the loss of his life force, which causes him to gradually lose his five senses and his eventual death.

I started watching this anime, first because I have nothing new to watch, second because I was interested in watching Miharu and Yoite’s developing bond with each other. Friendship between two people who normally doesn’t feel any connection at all to other people. I like their story, both of them so apathetic to the things around them, yet they were moved to forsake their loyalty to their clans to help each other. Their story is nice, however, too short for my liking.

It’s also worth mentioning that my first impression of Yoite was… I want him to suffer! And how guilty I felt when he did! His reversal of roles is interesting, from being so strong with this amazing power then becoming so weak and helpless. Miharu I like the first time. The little devil inside him is so cute! The supporting characters are also a mystery in their own right. Especially that Kotarou Fuuma. He’s not concerned about a comrade’s lost of life as long as the mission was successful. So what is he? Is he even human? I’m reserving judgement on him.

Now for my gripes. I didn’t like much the fact that two of my favorite characters in this anime died at the end, so I was a little sad at the end because of that. I was expecting Yoite to die, so I was kind of prepared for that, although I have still hope that some unexpected twist will happen that will let him live. I mean, come on! His friend possess such amazing powers, right? Anyway, I wasn’t expecting another favorite, Raikou Shimizu, to die as well. So, it was a bad surprise for me, I didn’t see that one coming…

I have a complaint about the sensei as well. I understand Raimei’s feelings of anger towards Tobari-sensei after Raikou died. It is such bad timing for Tobari to leave when things are getting out of control. I guess I was expecting too much from him, him being the adult in the group and all. Although I can understand his confusion about Miharu’s action, and the fact that he must hide the last secret art, still… such a kid… I mean, how can I respect a colleague who runs at the first sign of trouble? Hmph!

And, I was expecting a little more – oomph! – to the Shinra Banshou. My reaction was kind of like… is that all? I guess I was expecting something a bit more… powerful? I mean, that’s all they talk about, the whole darn series. I was hoping that they would give us fireworks, but it went…splat…

Anyway, it’s a good thing I had a warning about Yoite dying, otherwise, I would have been crying the whole night after watching the last episode… especially the last part… I was happy to see Yoite learning to live such a quiet life, free from conflicts. At most, I felt a – twinge? – of whatever – when I saw him smile before he vanished. Aww, so sad, really…

Well, I don’t know if I’m going to read the manga. Maybe Yoite or Raikou are alive there. Well, maybe…

Summary

Set in the modern age, the story is about Miharu Rokujou, who just wanted to live a normal life and inherit a Okonomiyaki restaurant. At the moment, his biggest problem was the constant pestering from Kouichi Aizawa and Durandal Thobari Kumohira, who started a Nindō (忍道?, lit. “Way of the Ninja”) Club. Miharu wanted nothing to do with “ninjas” and turns them down every time. But soon, he is attacked by an actual group of ninjas and is protected by Kouichi and Kumohira. There, Miharu learns of the hidden ninja world Nabari, the roles of his classmate and teacher in that world, and of the secret art Shinra Banshou (森羅万象, Shinrabanshō?, lit. “all things in nature”) within him. The secret art, containing all the world’s knowledge, is sorely coveted after in Nabari. And because of that, Miharu cannot return to his normal life. He must become the “Ruler of Nabari” to survive.

Review

At the beginning, this Anime somewhat interest me. I mean, hey, NINJAS! Who, on earth, can resist, NINJAS?
So I got to watching it, but I felt rather, disappointed.
The whole plot was kind of messy and it felt as if it was a little difficult to understand what was going on. When I was watching the first few episodes, it had me wondering if it was a sequel to something or what. Turns out that it wasn’t. So to follow along, I had to read the plot summary to get a rough idea.
All was good after that. Most of the characters are pretty to look at, albeit a little bland. But it’s just a little. The rest of the cast, is alright.
I think the manga probably follows up after this. I don’t know, because I’ve never read it.
This means that the anime started off with questions, and leaves you with even more questions. When it ended it felt like something was left out. The manga might answer that, but that’s another story.

I don’t know about you people but the main character pisses me off. It’s not his apathy that gets me, but rather, it is self-centeredness. The kind of, “no, why should I listen to you, i’m going to do it my own way, because i’m right and I don’t care.” even when others are risking their lives for him attitude.

Whilst watching the whole anime, I really, really wanted to put it done. I don’t know why. It could just be me though.

This anime got me really confused the whole time. The plot wasn’t exactly original(I mean, normal guy + world power hidden inside him + rest of the world fighting for it, who hasn’t seen it? Been there, done that)

Nonetheless, the anime provides a little humor at times, though the entire story is rather dark. The actions scenes were alright, although overall, the whole anime felt, kinda bland.

All in all, 7.9/10.

Body Image Fail goes to Naruto and the Animal Panic on Crescent Moon Island! In this movie, Naruto and supporting characters are hired to protect an oafish disgusting loser who is the prince of Crescent Moon Island. He embodies a large number of fat stereotypes, the most obvious being that he is constantly eating. (This is not called “being a fat guy.” This is called “binge-eating disorder.” Although maybe not an accurate representation thereof.) After providing much comedy by being fat and stupid, he eventually learns what is really important and plays a minor supporting role in the saving of the day. In the epilogue, Naruto and his friends stay on the island for a week so Kakashi can recover from using his Fancy Ninja Eye too much. During this week, the fat guy crash diets, and although he is still on the chunky side, he is considerably thinner after the ending credits, to let us know that we are suppose to stop laughing at him now because he is no longer a loser idiot! Also, losing a bunch of weight in the course of a week is totally healthy. Anyway, you can see him in the upper left corner there. I am too distracted by the kitty. KITTEH!!! (The villain was also on the chunky side, and had a guy following him around with a tray of fruit who read as comically gay. Homophobia fail too?)

Body Image Win goes to Nabari no Ou (anime version; I haven’t confirmed whether the [on-going] manga version features the same character or not). In this ninja anime full of even skinnier people than usual, there was totally a minor character in one plot arc who was noticeably chubbier than other sympathetic female anime characters! If I had been writing this blog when I had seen that plot arc, maybe I would have a screen shot. But I don’t! You’ll just have to watch the whole thing. (It would be nice someday if we had a sympathetic protagonist instead of a minor character who lasted a few episodes, but I am not holding my breath.)

The power of Twitter stalking prevails yet again!!!!

Dovrei dormire quando torno dall’ospedale, per recuperare le energie e stare sveglio la notte. Non ci riesco e oggi è più difficile del solito… una puntata di Nabari No Ou tira l’altra, mi piace, forse perché c’è molta malinconia in questo anime ed è così che mi sento, malinconico, triste sopratutto, impotente ed è odioso tutto questo perché è il contrario esatto di quello che ero prima!

Qualcosa è cambiato però. Irreparabilmente, e continuerà a cambiare, nel verso peggiore.

Provo a dormire, forse riesco a riposarmi. Ho 3 ore di tempo. Stanotte prenderò un paio di caffè invece di uno solo. Proprio adesso non posso rischiare di addormentarmi anche se sarebbe la cosa più semplice da fare… dormire e, magari, non svegliarsi più.

Ooh, more ninjas.  I haven’t had any ninja action since I read Tail of the Moon, and to be honest, Nabari no Ou has a bit more to do with ninjas than that series did.

The best thing about this series so far is Rokujou, the main character.  The plot of the series is basically that Rokujou was born with the super-secret ninja wisdom inside him, and that ninjas are starting to come after him to try and claim the wisdom for themselves.  The thing is, Rokujou doesn’t care.  He really, really does not care.  He doesn’t even try to argue or act out against all this ninja weirdness invading his life.  He simply walks away, often in the middle of a conversation.  It’s a good gag, and it works really well since Rokujou sticks with his indifference throughout the entire volume and never comically overreacts or shows any emotion whatsoever.

His teacher, Kumohira, and a classmate named Aizawa try to teach Rokujou ninja techniques for his own good to try and get him to defend himself and help with the extraction of the ninja art from his body and/or master the art so that he can become the “Nabari no Ou,” or king of the hidden ninja world.  Not only does he blow off their sincere concerns for his safety, most of the ninja techniques he learns in this volume are things like ninja substitution and veil techniques that get him away from the two of them as fast as possible.

There are other jokes in the series, but not many, and Rokujou’s indifference was enough to make this a pretty funny book.  The plot is fairly serious, however, and throughout the first volume, things like Kumohira making a vow to protect Rokujou’s life and the attack and deaths of several people in a ninja villiage come up.  Rokoujo doesn’t want any of this to happen to him, of course, but… you know, it kind of does anyway.  The tragic angle hasn’t really come up yet, but after the Fuma village slayings at the end of the volume, I have a feeling Rokujou will be more serious next time.

The ninja techniques are pretty cool.  You have everything from throwing stars and kunai to the veil and substitution techniques I mentioned earlier, swords, hand-to-hand combat, and even some ki manipulation.  The action scenes are pretty fast-paced and easy to follow, and haven’t really overwhelmed the story as of yet.  I’m hoping that it stays out of the realm of tournament-style series, but that depends on how long it is.  As of now, there’s quite a bit of plot, so there’s a good chance a lot of the story might just be a lot of the same silly keep-away that was going on in this volume.  If so, that would be great, because this was a pretty solid first volume.

Để theo dõi nội dung thì tạm chấp nhận , chứ nếu ko muốn vừa đọc vừa chửi rủa thì tớ khuyên là đừng mua =.= , tên ở VN là “Kỳ thủ cờ tướng” . Tràn đầy hy vọng vào manga này , của Umino-sensei mà , ở NHật mới ra tới vol 2 . Đọc hết vol 1 đã rất thú vị , đậm phong cách sensei ^^ .

Gah!!! The ending was quite boring, I was expecting for Miharu and the Head of Kairoshu, Hattori-san to fight for the Shinra Banshou. But that didn’t happen, all of the antagonists in the story died in just a single blast from Miharu’s power (including Ichiki-san).

I was kinda disappointed since nothing big happened in the end (except for the argument between Miharu and Yoite, though that wasn’t a big deal). Yae-san and Katou-kun were not shown in the ending song (shocking! I thought that there will be something good stored for them)

Another disppointing thing, Saraba’s fighting skills, GAHH they never featured Saraba’s fighting skills, I was expecting for Saraba to use something good since she’s the leader’s 2nd in position in Fuuma Village. Saraba resembles Kurenai From Naruto though Saraba’s skin is Darker and her figure is sexier.

Anyway enough of my expectations and rantings. What caught my attention was the part after the Credits, the part where Yoite disappeared. Gwad that was soooooo unexpected!!! Yoite didn’t use the Shinra Bnshou to fulfill his wish but in the end his wish was granted. Gahh that was soooo sad it almost made me cry.

The (additional) things that I plan to look up for once I have time to without much guilt clouding over my conscience.
1. (Manga) Barajou no Kisu
2. (Manga) Bloody Cross

Usually I don’t go for series that have girls as the main character, mostly because they irritate the heck out of me from the moment they appear onscreen. Especially if they have pink hair *stabs an imaginary Meirin*. Yuuki Cross from the Vampire Knight series is pretty useless, in addition to VK’s misplaced humour (I’m sorry, Miyano Mamoru-sama, even you cannot save this anime from my trashings…). Suzumiya Haruhi…well, she bosses people around way too much, and I expect I’ll never understand this Haruhiism thing that people are so caught up with. Hakushaku to Yousei, even though I did manage to finish it albeit grudgingly, hasn’t enough GAR factor in it to make me feel blown away (Midorikawa Hikaru-sama and Sugita Tomokazu-sama, I’m sorry!) and the main character’s hair bothers me too much…and I just can’t be bothered about Blue Knight Earl or something *gags*.

La Corda d’Oro ~primo passo~ is a reverse harem, which to me is one of the genres that I totally, totally cannot stomach. The heroine (Hinano something, ka?), although a nice girl, I cannot ignore easily. So buying the DVD can be considered wasteful…One of my regrets in life. Heavy sigh.
Note to self: Don’t ever, ever include Hanasakeru Shounen in thy list. With a name like Kajika-something-something-something, the lead female is an obvious Mary Sue, she might as well wear a nametag bearing the hideous name with an even more horrendous meaning. Ack.
Wait, what about Ristoranto Paradise? (…wait, how is it spelled again?)

That girl Hikari from Special A deserves no mention whatsoever. Tch.

Saiunkoku Monogatari’s Kou Shuurei is insignificant to me, although I do ship RyuukixShuurei.

Nodame Cantabile has Noda Megumi, who is pretty much someone whom I would consider referring to a psychiatrist had I meet her in real life, but the chemistry she shares between Chiaki Shin’ichi pretty much redeems her worth.

Mogami Kyoko of Skip Beat! sometimes I do see as a Mary Sue, but the fact that she’s hardly your little angel – yes, people, she packs a punch and holds grudges for some time – and that the series has the shounen element of moving forward after defeating strong adversaries only to face another makes the series tolerable. The animation is sub-par, because the male faces are too elliptical in shape! Maybe Konishi Katsuyuki-sama and Miyano Mamoru-sama are the ones keeping me glued to it after all…

That samurai girl Raimei in Nabari no Ou is tolerable too. Don’t ask why I still haven’t advanced to episode 5 though…

Cough.

In any case. I’m keeping a lookout for Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, and am still obediently following Gintama the anime, although I do hope the subbed episodes would be available more quickly. The same goes to 07 Ghost, because the manga is way, way ahead…

And won’t Meitantei Conan hurry up and end already!? I want to know what happened to Akai Shuuichi!

As for Bleach…am thinking of watching the anime on alternate episodes, because the all the flashbacks won’t make me feel as if I’ve missed much anyway.

Naruto Shippuuden in my books is a lost cause, because Sasuke has gone way over the top, and with Itachi and Kakashi gone, it’s like I’ve no reason to follow it anymore. That is, if you don’t count my occasional browsing through the manga as following it… Still, Sugiyama Noriaki-sama, my apologies. Listening to you as Arthur Kirkland is bliss enough for me.

[EDIT] Okay…so it turns out, exactly as I feared…Barajou no Kisu is indeed a reverse harem – I should know, because I just finished all three chapters online so far at Onemanga, and it’s stated there, clear as day – Harem! …But the girl isn’t too irritating. Still, seriously, what’s up with the name? Agnes or Anise?? The four bishounen are your representatives from each stereotype – Kaede, the rival/best friend(?); Tenjyou, the school idol president whom practically all the female population have hots for (but he acts like Francis Bonnefoy from APH); Mutsuki, the emo??, silent and mysterious guy; and…uh, this other boy named Seiran who serves either as a moe or shota element in the story…

…Still. I might follow the story, just for the heck of it. Tsk.
Do we make exceptions for everything??

Assuming you all have read the first installment on my top 5 OPs (and to those who have not, you can read it later), I bring you the second section. Compiling these lists are kind of difficult since I’m such a rabid anime whore fan. 
And now, without further ado:

#5: Blood+
“語り継ぐこと”

I won’t lie to you – I didn’t like this song the first time I heard it. Chitose Hajime’s voice, I thought, sounded really weird and it just didn’t sit well with me. But after a few more episodes, it had completely grown on me and now I’m able to appreciate the beauty of the artwork and the uniqueness of Hajime’s voice.

#4: Death Note
“Alumina”

Visual kei isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Death Note. But somehow it works. It’s just dark and spooky enough to fit the mood of the series. (Not to mention the artwork which is trippy with a capital T)

What can I say? Pretty acoustic song with tender scenes between the two main characters of this series, Yoite and Miharu. Touching, simple, and beautiful.

#2: Vampire Knight
“Still Doll”

Still, you do not answer.
Even though the series is a total hot mess, I ADORE this ending. The art has a distinctly gothic feel to it, emphasizing the dark elements of the anime. Adding to the creep factor is the song, sung by Kanon Wakeshima who provides both vocals and cello playing. (The credit for production of the song goes to Mana, who did an excellent job creeping it up for us)

#1: Rurouni Kenshin
“Heart of Sword ~夜明け前~”

Rurouni Kenshin is my favorite series of all time. I first watched it during the Toonami block on Cartoon Network in the second grade, and the rest, as they say, is history. That said, this ending resounds in my sentimental little heart as a reminder of the days when anime didn’t have to be complicated by fandom or resemblance to the manga or anything. I simply loved the show. It’s very special to me and even after these years it hasn’t lost its meaning.
