While watching Olivier Blanchard’s great presentation about Social Media ROI that I ‘dis

While watching Olivier Blanchard’s great presentation about Social Media ROI that I ‘discovered’ on Mashable this week, I had a revelation.

Social Media ROI is like an Oreo Cookie!

It would be hard to find anyone who hasn’t taken apart an Oreo cookie to eat the frosting. Some people claim that the middle of an Oreo is the best while others claim that there are no calories in the frosting which means that it doesn’t really matter. In any case, one of the slides in Oliver’s presentation resonated with me and it made me think of Oreo cookies.

There are a lot of activities that people quantify and measure when looking at the ROI of an investment – but the only 2 ones that matter are the Investment Impact and the Financial Impact. The investment relates to the limited resources of people, technology and time for the activity, and the financial impact relates to increased revenues or decreased costs.

Social Media ROI is Like An Oreo Cookie (loosely borrowed idea from Oliver Blanchard and Nabisco)

In other words, the Investment and Financial Impacts are the cookie outsides and the non-financial action is the stuff in the middle. And just like an Oreo cookie, the stuff in the middle doesn’t really matter. At least it doesn’t matter from in a return or investment sense. Web visitors, impressions, customer complaints, positive reviews, blog posts, click-throughs, emails, Twitter followers, blog comments, etc. do not translate directly into quantifiable revenues until those actions convert into incremental sales or confirmed cost reductions. The non-financial impacts are predictors of success, but they are not success in and of themselves.

When it comes down to it, the only things that matter is how much did you spend and how much did you make.

Most importantly, Olivier says to:

Establish a baseline – so you can measure the changes from

Create activity timelines – so you can correlate specific actions to

Analyze sales revenue along several dimensions – in terms of Frequency, Reach and Yield or F.R.Y. (transactions per month, net new customers, $ amount per transaction)

With that introduction, I give you Olivier Blanchard’s Basics of Social Media ROI presentation from Slideshare which he originally presented at the Social Fresh Conference in August 2009. He uses images from the 1970’s British television show, UFO Series, which makes for an interesting and amusing presentation:

Richard Serra’s Torqued Ellipse II, photo by Evan Namerow

This past Sunday, I got a satisfying dose of art, nature, and tranquility just a short train ride north of Manhattan. I escaped from New York City and headed to Beacon, New York, home of the Dia: Beacon, a contemporary art museum that houses works by some of the most significant artists of the last half century. Although the museum itself was the main attraction of the day (especially Richard Serra’s breathtaking sculptures), getting there was equally enjoyable. My companion and I boarded a Metro North train on Sunday morning, and after rattling past 125th Street and leaving the city, we were treated to scenic views of the Hudson for the rest of our eighty-minute journey. Fortunately, it was a gorgeous day: plenty of sailboats were on the water, and the mountains were just starting to show signs of autumn, with reds and oranges and yellows standing out among the stretches of green.

The view on the pathway to the Dia

Upon arriving in Beacon, we took the five-minute walk along the road and arrived at the Dia, which is housed in a 1929 Nabisco box-printing factory. Before even taking in the exhibits, I stood in awe of the massive size of the gallery space – a whopping 240,000 square feet. Although the Metropolitan Museum and MoMA aren’t exactly cramped, the Dia: Beacon has some unique assets that set it apart. The whole museum is lit naturally, and the sun turned out to be an integral ingredient for viewing many of the works. Furthermore, each gallery is devoted to a single artist, and the Dia catered to the artists’ needs in order to accommodate the unconventional dimensions and characteristics of their work.

The entrance to the Dia: Beacon

On the main level, Robert Smithson’s Map of Broken Glass (1969) shows a pile of shattered, transparent glass on the floor. But as its title suggests, there is a metaphorical significance to the work that forces the viewer to question the journey of each piece of glass to its current state. John Chamberlain used crushed automobile parts to make sculptures of varying sizes and dimensions in the 60s and 70s. Some were short and clunky, while another one included long, twisted strips of colorful metal that hung from the ceiling. In You see I am here after all (2008), Zoe Leonard depicted Niagara Falls through nearly 4000 vintage postcards of the destination. Michael Heizer’s Negative Megalith #5 (1998) shows a huge stone placed in a vertical wall, where the wall should be, while Fred Sandback wanted to create sculptures that did not have an inside. So, he made vertical thread constructions that depicted transparent geometries and linear trajectories, without having a definable volume.

One of the Dia’s galleries, photo by Tony Cenicola

The museum’s lower level houses four torqued sculptures by Richard Serra, an artist whose massive works first struck me when I saw them at the MoMA in 2007. They are on long-term display at the Dia, and as soon as I entered the room, I was soaked in Serra’s sculptural splendor. Situated next to each other, the four works fit snuggly into the enormous space, creating a sense of immediacy for the viewer. Although they are made of sheet metal, the sculptures’ earth tones, twists, and spirals – not to mention their striking size – make them seem grounded, natural, and organic. The earthy quality of Serra’s work is heightened by the natural light flooding through the windows, casting incredible shadows on the sculptures’ sides and occasionally creeping into their interiors. Walking through the labyrinthine structures was full of surprises. With their curving walls, it was impossible to know what was in front of me, and where exactly I would end up. Standing or sitting at the center of the sculptures was both intimidating and comforting: the walls felt protective and caring, but upon looking up, it was hard not to feel frightened by such towering, majestic beauty. Moreover, I was continually amazed by what Serra had accomplished: the upper and lower edges of each sculpture create a perfect ellipse.

Looking up from the ground, Serra’s curving sculpture meets the ceiling

As it turns out, Serra was strongly affected by contemporary dance as a young artist, prompting him to think about “ways of relating movement to material and space”. Furthermore, he said, “I found very important the idea of the body passing through space, and the body’s movement not being predicated totally on image or sight or optical awareness, but on physical awareness in relation to space, place, time, and movement.” Staring up at the sculptures gave me the sensation that the sculptures or I were constantly moving. And without any hard edges, the sculptures and their movement felt endless. Observing and entering Serra’s sculptures transported me miles away from the traditional art-viewing experience, yet I still felt firmly grounded and aware of my surroundings.

Although there were plenty of other visitors there on Sunday, my companion and I often felt like we had the Dia to ourselves. We spent a solid two hours in the museum and then spent some time exploring the outdoor spaces, which include a garden – where there is currently a sound installation – and plenty of grass to sprawl out and enjoy the quiet. On a sunny day, a trip to the Dia: Beacon is a perfect escape from the noise and chaos of Manhattan.

Sometimes the quest for knowledge is not a straight path, but more like a blindfolded stumble throug

Sometimes the quest for knowledge is not a straight path, but more like a blindfolded stumble through the woods that involves bonking your head on low-lying tree branches. And this time I have Melvyn Bragg to thank for the bump on my forehead.

It all started with this broadcast about the dispute between Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz over who invented calculus. During the course of the talk, one of the experts notes that Newton and Leibniz are the only two mathematicians to have cookies named after them. I instantly thought of inventing a New Math cookie that always comes out of the oven half baked. I put it alongside anti-gravity devices in the file drawer of projects I’ll have to get around to someday, but went out into the world confidently telling people that Fig Newtons are named after Sir Isaac.

Unfortunately, a bit of Googling later on showed that while Leibniz Butterkeks are indeed named after the inventor of the Leibniz Integral Rule, Fig Newtons get their moniker from the Massachusetts town of Newton. The Kennedy Biscuit Company, which invented the fruity cookie in 1891, used regional place names for its products.

This is the first time I’ve been steered wrong by something on Bragg’s show, which is bad enough. Even worse, I now have an insatiable craving for Fig Newtons. The quest for knowledge always has its price, I guess.

I may be in love with Thomas Keller. And I say that without ever having eaten at French Laundry or

I may be in love with Thomas Keller. And I say that without ever having eaten at French Laundry or Per Se. In fact, my first encounter with the wonder that is Mr. Keller was entirely conceptual, when Adam Sandler was making a sandwich in the movie Spanglish. He sliced it in half and a river of egg yolk gushed out between 2 slices of rustic bread and enveloped bacon, lettuce and tomato in a puddle of marigold glory. After Googling “Spanglish sandwich,” I discovered that this mind-blowing concoction was the genius of Thomas Keller, and that since, that sandwich has been dubbed (arguably) “The World’s Greatest Sandwich.”

But I digress. This post is about a cookie. Now, I’m not going to trivialize all of this “I love TK” talk with esoteric foodie babble and over-inflated claims of superior taste and texture. In fact, I can easily say that I’ve had better cookies. But, what I love about this one, this reinterpretation of the classic Nutter Butter, is that it is represents the ideal answer to that oftentimes regretful question: what do you want to be when you grow up?

You look at this cookie and you know Thomas Keller the Kid loved his junk food. And you know he still does because he feels the need to recreate them, as if some alternate is going to do anything other than just taste like another (albeit more “quality”) version of a perfectly delicious original. But, it does manage to do something more – it transports, it reminds, it makes people feel warm and fuzzy and childish and indulgent – and under the prestigious halo of the Thomas Keller brand, it even manages to put “Nabisco” and “luxury” into the same thought.

It’s a creative soul who loves something, anything, to the point where (s)he wants to express that passion in some alternate form that will validate the feeling even further. The lucky ones figure out how to do it and make a living out of it – and this is what I imagine Thomas Keller has done with his whimsical reinterpretations of humble, nostalgic sweets (Nutter Butter, Oreo, Ho-ho). So TK gets to do a little happy dance for being a Kitchen Wizard, and the rest of us get to say, “ooh, remember Nutter Butter? They were soooo good, I want to try this because I loved Nutter Butter and this is called Nutter Butter except it’s by TK not Nabisco so it’s probably better.”

Maybe I’m getting overly-sentimental about all of this because I’m at a crossroads in my life (like all the other 20-something-year-old’s out there) where I’m trying to figure out just what the hell I should be doing that will get me as close as possible to the answer I used to give to that question when I was a kid… whatever that answer was. Meanwhile, Thomas Keller gets to say that he perfects cookies, one-up’s corporate biscuit giants, creates and casts sandwiches in Hollywood movies, chills in Napa and gets people to pay him large sums of money to surrender themselves to his culinary vision. Lucky son of a bitch.

Okay. How do I begin this post? Jesus. Strength.

I have no earthly idea of what smoking crack cocaine is like… but, if it is that damn good to the user, if I could fathom any sort of real or imagined correlation… I would go for the imaginary option this go round.

Quisp cereal manufactured (still to this *eep!* very day) by the Quaker Oats Company must certainly have a fair dose of crack in its ingredients. Heroin? Both!? Say, how’s about a speed ball, little guy? Harry K. Thaw, we love your moon rocks! That Quazy Energy has sent us into orbit, loving us long time! Oooooohhhhhhh, ffffffffuuuuuu… ssssweeeet mmmama… what Wikipedia best describes as a “saucer-shaped, baked paste of corn meal and syrup, identical in overall taste to its sister brand Cap’n Crunch but with softer texture,” has been sorely missed by my palate for many years and Cap’n Crunch doesn’t even come CLOSE! (harshly whispered) They liiiiiiiiiieee! I have had this monkey on my back for too many years! I cannot find Quisp anywhere, and they still make it?

For the past twelve years, I have heard reports (more like ugly rumors) that not only is Quisp still in production, you can only buy it online with a credit or debit card, and it’s $10.00 a box. WHAT? I cried “FOUL”! Do a Google search for “Quisp”. You will get its official site url from Quaker Oats: http://www.quisp.com/, click it on and it automatically redirects you to a much longer url which shows a box of Quisp and all this information leading us cereal junkies on to the false hope that Quisp can still be had. To the left, click “Buy at Online Store” and that is only an advertisement for their current marketing ploy on a t-shirt showing a suited yuppie hipster with a jet pack on his back, sending him into the Williamsburg/Silverlake cosmos of his dreams with the shill sloganed on the L.A. sweatshop tee, “Quaker Go Humans Go”.

Stay tuned for other breakfast and snack foods I have long suspected of containing addictive drugs, like the Jewish stoner favorite, Mallomars by Nabisco. Nabisco doesn’t tell you outright lies about those lovely little cookies. They can still be purchased for $4.00 a box in grocery stores predominantly in New England, New York, Michigan, Florida, and California. Although here in Charlotte, North Carolina, our very own Harris Teeter gladly sells them in the aisle for cookies and snack cakes. However, because of the consistency of Mallomars extruded marshmallow puffed atop a disc of graham cracker “enrobed” by a thin veneer of chocolate, they melt too easily in the summertime heat. So, wherever they are sold in the USA, it’s only for a seasonal period, beginning in October through early April. I’ve got a month. I’m waiting.

Last week our new waste-hauling company rolled into town. A big reason for the change: Palo Alto’s g

Last week our new waste-hauling company rolled into town. A big reason for the change: Palo Alto’s goal of zero waste by 2021. Recycling has come a long way since those first days when you had to tear off labels from jars and cans, squash down and rip apart cans and boxes, and separate everything into individual bins. Now our single stream, big blue bin accepts everything from plastic bags (including thin film plastic from grocery products) to hard plastic toys, scrap metal, and electronics, in addition to all of the cans, bottles, and other standard stuff. Even with this ramped up recycling, there’s still too much trash out there. What about the cork(s) you popped from the wine bottles(s) the other evening or the wrappers from all of those “healthy” energy bars you eat before working out in your Nike’s (not to mention the old Nike’s themselves)? Now, one company is trying to take recycling a big step further. TerraCycle, the innovative packager of worm poo fertilizer in recycled containers, has partnered with Cliff Bars, Frito-Lay, Nabisco, and other major companies to collect and recycle food wrappers, yoghurt containers, cell phones, and corks. By going to TerraCycle’s website, you can sign up to collect product (unfortunately, some have waitlists), which is then shipped to TerraCycle in postage-paid containers. For every container or wrapper collected, the company will donate $.02 to the nonprofit or school of your choice. Even better, TerraCycle is making this trash into usable items, which can be purchased online. After all, what good does it do to recycle if there’s no use for the stuff? If you’ve got kids, check out the back-to-school Eco-Binders, Drink Pouch Backpack and Lunch Box, and Oreo Waste Wrapper Notebook. All the cool kids will be carrying them this year.
