Voilà une dizaine de jours que je rédigeais un article inhérent à une requête simple: la mise à disposition de conteneurs et bacs poubelle.

Le message est visiblement très bien passé puisque depuis hier, c’est chose faite à proximité de mon immeuble d’habitation.

Et pour l’occasion, ils n’y sont pas allés de main morte, pas moins de 4 gros conteneurs poubelle qui arrivent d’un coup d’un seul, à point nommé. Les riverains ne sont pas habitués à cela, car évidemment ils n’en ont jamais eu à disposition! Ils n’auront que l’embarras du choix, quel conteneur pourront-ils bien choisir pour déposer leurs déchets n’est-ce-pas?

Mais en tout cas, je m’en réjouis pleinement et c’était là tout le sens de ma requête, c’est plus de propreté dans les rues de notre ville et plus de responsabilisation des habitants, les invitant à non plus déposer leurs sacs poubelle sur les trottoirs mais dans les conteneurs prévus à cet effet.

Serge Pugeault se vante constamment de la rapidité de la majorité municipale à entamer la réfection de la Halle du Boulingrin, alors que par le passé ce dossier paraissait au ralenti.

C’est clairement de la mauvaise foi car si Adeline Hazan et son équipe ont eu la possibilité de lancer aussi vite ce dossier, c’est grâce aux travaux d’études réalisés par l’équipe précédente. Il serait bon qu’ils ne l’omettent pas!

M. Pugeault met en cause la lenteur du déblocage de l’aide de l’Etat à la réfection qui était bloquée depuis 1996…C’est aussi objectivement l’une des causes du non avancement du dossier par le passé !

Surtout, c’est la preuve que gouvernements de gauche comme de droite n’avaient pas rempli cet engagement, alors même que Serge Pugeault se répand partout en affirmant que l’enveloppe accordée dans le cadre du plan de relance n’est que le rattrappage de cette promesse non tenue.

Enfin et c’est important de le souligner, c’est Jack Lang qui a classé ce bâtiment pour des raisons politiciennes en 1985, alors que sa qualité architecturale est très largement décriée.

M. Pugeault a la mémoire bien courte et une lecture partiale et partielle de ce dossier, il n’a même pas le souci de la cohérence dans les propos qu’il tient, trop occupé à politiser à outrance et à vouloir discréditer l’Etat et l’Exécutif…

Just a few days ago I saw a video about Nadia, a new music duo, who were practicing this Acoutic Version Cover of Kara’s Mister.

The female vocalist is Myung In Hee from THE THE.

The guy is called Hwang Hyun.

As for today it has finally been released

Estamos certos de que muitos estão curiosos pelo tão-misterioso Nadia, o último grupo a debutar no maravilhoso mundo do KPop, sob a Purple Communications. Com a onda de grupos novatos surgindo este ano, é muito bom ver um grupo-projeto que se distingue dos demais.

Na verdade, os próprios membros, Hwang Hyun e Myung In Hee, nos fizeram ter a certeza de que eles são bem diferentes da imagem  estereotipada de “ídolo pop” a qual estamos acostumadas a ver. A frase “Todas as canções escritas e produzidas por Nadia” acompanha seu nome, enfatizando o talento da dupla, não só no desempenho, mas também em todo o processo de fazer música.

Em um recente vídeo lançado no YouTube da SM Entertainment, a dupla expressa que é difícil classificar sua música em um único gênero, dizendo: “Nós não temos um gênero certo. Nós somos artistas pop com base no estilo eletrônico… Nós criamos músicas com nosso estilo único. Nós não somo underground ou overgroungd, talvez ground”.

Eles continuaram: “Nós nos esforçamos para colocar a mistura de emoções de um casal que apenas começou a amar. Nós temos muitas outras músicas que são tão boas quanto nossa faixa título, Twinkling Boy, então, por favor, não esqueça uma única faixa do nosso CD. Nós seremos o Nadia que dá passos a frente para se tornar melhor, então fique de olho em nós.”.

Bom, eles são um pouco pretenciosos em usa maneira de falar, mas… Realmente, eles imensuravelmente melhores que muitas bandas que estão no topo.

Today I got up, went downstairs, grabbed my clean dress-clothes out of the dryer, and proceeded to get ready for a funeral. It was a funeral for a lady whom I met twice, Florence Strom. She was 97(!) when she passed on. Apparently (as I learned during the service) she was an amazing woman. Hearing about her life gave some meaning to me before reading some selections at her service.

I was asked to read Psalms 23 (at the funeral home), and the Baha’i obligatory prayer for the deceased (at the graveyard). If you don’t know (as I didn’t), psalms 23 is the “walk through the valley of the shadow of death” one. All I could think of last night was:

Which was hilarious, but also made me feel like I was being extremely inappropriate. On the bright side, I’ve decided to include a clause in my will that states that my siblings have to perform a rendition of gansta’s paradise after reading this psalm….and that Nadia has to be the main rapper (as she knows the lyrics by heart, and kills it live).

Also, I discovered that even though the Baha’i obligatory prayer for the departed is the only congregational prayer, there is still no repetition by the crowd! I was under the impression that congregational meant one person reads something, and the congregation responds, but apparently not. So I read this prayer, out in the bitter cold, and it’s LONG, but it was nice. I actually felt like it was really fitting for the occasion. (Funerals kinda force you to consider mortality, especially in relation to yourself. What do you think happens after you die? And if you believe in an afterlife, what do you think it’s like?)

Then we had a traditional Norwegian smorgasboard (mostly fish and potatoes), I socialized with some peoples (and received suggestions that I explore a career in radio), and then went and played chess.

The afternoon was focused on the visit of Ted’s nephew, Darren, who came with his wife and two kids from Kelowna. I got home, changed from ultra-dressy to jeans and a T, and cleaned-up and organized till them peoples arrived. They have a daughter named Emily as well, so there are 2(!) Emily Glabushes running around the Okanagan.

The night was joyous, and once again, family is jes wicked.

The new SM project group Nadia  released an official their version of the “Mister” cover and fans are definitely liking it. The R&B cover is a lot different from the original KARA version and it’s definitely got me thinking, which version is better?

A post I’ve wanted to make for some time is how I came to be doing this at all.

I mean, I know I wrote this, right back at the beginning, which explains the why of it – but the how of it is down to the people who put me in a position even to think that someone like me could sustain a non-native bilingual existence with my first-born for a matter of weeks, let alone the 21 months we have so far clocked up between us, one day at a time (as we say in the After School Club.) 

I have been lucky and had a lot of talented teachers in all disciplines in my life, most of which was (at least, prior to the After School Club watershed) spent in full-time education. But a few of them have given me confidence that I was able to take outside the classroom, confidence which saw me through the lessons of the many rubbish teachers I have also had, and, in a way – though the faults are all my own – helped create the Francophone monster that is Papa et Piaf. 

Here they are. 

Martin was probably the first, though he came on the scene at about the same time as Nadia (see below). The first teacher to make me realise that French was a language that people actually used, rather than a verbal trigonometry. He smoked immensely and, again, his failing made him seem more human. He was a caustic, cynical man in some ways and regularly referred to hapless students as “cretins”, which was one of the many things I liked about him – he didn’t pretend to like everyone just because they were children. This meant that, if ever he did show signs of liking you, you could actually believe it might be true. 

And he was, in other ways, tremendously kind. I remember going to see him once after the lesson because I thought I didn’t understand the perfect tense (yes, I really was that much of a loser.) I ended up actually crying (a loser AND a wimp – hands off, ladies, I’m practically married!) When he saw how distressed I was, Martin spent half his break talking me through it (remember, this man was probably a forty-a-day smoker who self-medicated on Gauloises and must have lived for his breaks. )

Several years later, he also enlivened A-level by actually telling us things we might want to know, and hinting at the dirty bits in Camus. Without him, I probably wouldn’t have bothered doing French past GCSE.

Nadia arrived at our school when I was in what was then called the third year. She came to teach us Russian, taking over from a man who had learnt his Russian spying on Soviet air traffic. She was a real Russian; she was very short; she claimed to have a brown belt in karate; she was clearly mad. Nadia, again, made a language seem much more than lists of declensions (of which Russian has many). With her, we could imagine people actually living, loving, arguing, even doing karate in this then very rare language (perestroika didn’t really get underway until my GCSE year.) When I sat A level, Nadia coached me. When I applied to Oxford, Nadia gave me extra lessons, free of charge, which is basically what got me in. When I wanted to go to Russia, Nadia helped me sort it out, and gave me a few pointers on how to get extra hard currency through customs. When I thought that Chekhov was tosh, Nadia reassured me that I was not alone. And she also said one of the nicest things a teacher had ever said to me. We were flying to Moscow together. Somehow, we were talking about my family, particularly my mum. “Well, she’s done a good job,” said Nadia. It took me a second to realise what she meant and, when I did, I must have been pink with pride. A teacher thinking that I was not only a good student, but a good person? There was hope for me yet.

Mary was the one-woman welcoming committee when I arrived at Oxford. She had given me my place (when my first choice college had, foolishly, rejected me); she had patiently and politely answered some nonsense letter I had written to her before starting (about something nothing to do with her, like bedding or grants – I had so little idea about how Oxford worked that I just wrote to the only person whose address I had on paper, and it was hers, on my offer letter); and she welcomed me, along with my fellow first-year starters, into her North Oxford sitting room in October long, long ago. 

I was not, at that point, studying French. I was at college to do single honours Russian (the English faculty had decided it could struggle by without me.) I was amazed that I was at Oxford, and was liberated by having no idea what to expect. 

The intake that year seemed beyond good. A half-Russian man; a half-Polish woman; a frighteningly gifted man who had taught himself Hungarian for a laugh; and me. And this woman, Mary, was posher than anyone I knew – she had a ‘cello, for heaven’s sake! I almost gave up, there and then.

But Mary did not give up on me. Always quick with praise and measured with criticism; always acting as if my admission had been a considered choice and not a slip of the pen on some long, closely-printed list of names; always taking her students seriously, even when we spoke nonsense. After two terms, I had even started to believe her. 

Colin took me on when I decided that, though I still wanted to study Russian, the particular joys reserved for single honours students – extra linguistics, the Lay of Prince Igor and the Memoirs of Prince Avakkum, these latter two to be read in Old Church Slavonic – were not for me. He found a place for me in his already crowded French group.

As I made the group an odd number, he also agreed to see me individually for tutorials. As I began to develop interests, and as they began to align themselves with his, he would occasionally let me set my own essay title. He even gave me a 10-year-old bottle of home-made white wine, which turned out to be the best sherry I had ever tasted. This, I decided, was what Oxford was about. 

So much so that, after a couple of terms, in the last tutorial before the vacation (it was a hollow joke to call them “holidays”) I diffidently mentioned that I had been thinking of a future in academia. 

Silence. 

If, at that stage, he had turned around and started an awful, mocking impersonation of a deranged simpleton, it would not have surprised me. Of course I had been fooling myself. I was, perhaps not hopeless, but very much an also-ran, and clearly a pretentious one at that.

Instead, he said, quite quietly, “Yes, well. I was thinking of giving you a scholarship, but you don’t work hard enough.”

In a flash, several truths became apparent to me. I was not an idiot; I was not delusional; and, most important of all, the age-old myth fell apart. At school, I had been effortlessly successful. Then I had come to Oxford and had been effortlessly mediocre. I had assumed that my dear old mum was right, that the bar ha been raised and I could no longer clear it. Instead, it turned out, no-one here was effortlessly anything. The people who succeeded did so because they were very bright, but because they also worked exceptionally hard. I started taking their lead. The following term, I worked harder than ever before or since (as well as acting, rowing, and writing at a “jolly good sport” sort of level) and got my mini-scholarship (or “exhibition” as they call it). I went on to narrowly miss a First and come out of that with enough confidence intact to go on to do research at Edinburgh. Without Colin’s quiet honesty, I’d have ended up pretending to want to be a school-teacher and wondering why I hated my life (I did that anyway, years later – but at least I had a go at what I wanted to be.) 

Ian was the last one. Believed by his Edinburgh undergraduates to have it in for English loafers, he nevertheless took on an Oxford graduate, to all appearances a dilettante (it took me about a term to tell him I was working twenty hours a week and that that was why I was a bit behind on the reading) who came armed only with an undergraduate dissertation on Daniel Pennac, an author almost no one had then heard of, apparently word-processed by a five-year-old, and of which Oxford’s examiners could not decide whether it was a work of genius or the ravings of an imbecile. 

Ian gave me the benefit of the doubt and, when he realised I was broke, did all he could to enable me to make some sort of a go of my doctorate. He sent me to France twice; he found me teaching hours (my poor undergraduates, I am so sorry you were lumbered with me); he got me published; and he let me stay round his house once so I could return from Nice to do a conference paper. He also took me lunchtime drinking at the Southsider. Ian made me believe that, not only could I become an academic, but that I could live as an academic, perhaps for my whole life. The question of what the hell I was going to do with this bizarre commodity called life was finally, and to my immense relief, solved

Of course, I went on to piss all that up the proverbial wall, but that was no fault of his. And I did come out of it speaking really rather good French …

So, if any of the five of you end up reading this, thank you. I couldn’t have done it without you.

In attesa dell’uscita del secondo romanzo di Alessandro Bastasi, “la gabbia criminale”, ecco la recensione del suo primo lavoro:

Narra la storia contemporanea (primi anni ‘90) della Russia, gli avvicendamenti politici, la realtà del popolo russo ed i tentativi di rialzarsi, di ribellarsi a chi ha tolto loro la dignità di popolo schiavizzandolo ad una realtà di denaro ed egoismo e rendendolo mendicante.
Il protagonista, attraverso il quale l’autore ci presenta la storia, è un italiano, Vittorio Ronca, descritto come un uomo che porta dentro di sè il fuoco della giustizia, della lealtà, degli ideali fondamentali del vero comunismo.
Un uomo insoddisfatto in fondo di ciò che fa, in continuo mutamento, alla ricerca, forse, della sua missione, del suo posto per contribuire al cambiamento sociale per il quale si batterà fino alla fine.
Vittorio è l’incarnazione di tutti coloro che si sentono impotenti di fronte all’egocentrismo diffuso, al potere del denaro e della vita comoda che fa chiudere la porta di casa a chiave ed in faccia al proprio vicino bisognoso. Impotenti di fronte a quella falsa benevolenza, a questa società infarcita di ipocrisia che mette in piazza i propri problemi solo se ci intravede una possibilità di arricchimento.
Vittorio tenta di cambiare le cose ma viene tradito dai suoi stessi mandanti (compagni?); la Russia come l’America e l’Italia: il benessere sventolato dai politici a mò di promessa solo per ottenere fiducia e voti e ritrovarsi poi, ai bordi di una strada, su tappeti di cartone, a vendere centrini.
Dalla fluidità e chiarezza della scrittura si intuisce la grande affezione dell’autore per la Russia e la conoscenza di ogni angolo di Mosca che il lettore riesce ad immaginare attraverso gli spostamenti di Vittorio per le sue vie.
Le tematiche sono attuali, direi forse universali…

Nadia

Twinkling Boy, released on 11.18.09, is 나디아’s first single and is SM’s newest project.

The title track 「Twinkling Boy」 is an upbeat electric pop song with the vocalist’s vocals being vocoded. Immediately, the song gives a nice fresh feel and the song itself is really cute as well as well done. The chorus especially is catchy with its repetition and upbeat-ness.

「Rewind」 begins really softly with a simple electronica playing quietly as the vocalist sings. The lyrics are nicely spaced out and gives the song a sweet, almost sophisticated feel to it. It’s a nice, quiet song that would be really nice to listen to on a quiet, good weathered day perhaps.

Before the single came out, I watched the cover of KARA’s Mister that Nadia did and found the vocalist to have a really great, mature voice. Definitely sounded like something different for SM. This single definitely didn’t disappoint and although I have a dislike for autotuned vocals, it really works when it’s used in Twinkling Boy. I especially am fond of Rewind as it’s nice and quiet; just perfect for those quiet days where you lie listening to your mp3 player ;D.

Full Single: Nadia – Twinkling Boy

Hot new mixed group Nadia finally released two new singles of their own and I’m not quite sure what to think of it.

It was pretty much pre-determined, by their cover, that the Myung In Hee would be singing the majority portion however what happened to Hwang Hyun? There’s not even a trace that another member exists within these two new tracks. “Twinkling Boy” and “Rewind” are not very strong songs to start out with and we’re not really sure how this group will compare to others.

If your eyebrows went up with “Twinkling Boy,” you’re not the only one. “Twinkling boy” is a tad too peppy for my taste but no unbearable however; “Rewind” is very laid back fused with jazz tunes and is like their cover of “Mister” which  most people are liking. However, even with okay debut, Nadia needs a lot more then just good efforts to stay a float in this kpop age.

A nova banda da SM Entertainment, Nadia, acaba de lançar seu primeiro mini-álbum, nomeado Twinkling Boy!

Nadia é composta por dois membros, Hwan Hyun e Myung In Hee. O nome da dupla vem da animação “Nadia” e expressa sua imagem simples, mas feminina juntamente com uma atmosfera misteriosa através de seu single.

Aqui vão algumas informações sobre os dois membros: Hwan Hyun em um mestre em matéria de compor clássicos e ele era o único homem produzindo RoomMate. No passado, ele já trabalhou com SNSD, Natsun, J e Seon Yeon. Myung In Hee é a voz feminina do grupo, exatamente como era quando fazia parte do grupo de rock moderno THE THE com Park Hye Kyung  e Han Hee Jung. Ela participou de trilhas sonoras originais [OST] de dramas como Lovers in Paris e Spot Light, além de ter experiência em concertos no Japão.

Ancora scandali, rumors, forse censure per la martoriata stampa marocchina. Questa volta si tratta di una rivista femminile a finire sotto i proiettori infuocati dei benpensanti. La rivista si chiama “Femmes du Maroc“, molto seguita dal ceto medio- alto borghese del Paese e, se l’inchiesta sul parto in Marocco non scandalizza, la fotografia di copertina crea imbarazzi e discussioni accese, invocanti la messa al bando del mensile. Una fotografia, una semplice e bella fotografia che ritrae Nadia Larguet, incinta, con la mano sinistra che copre il seno e la destra appoggiata sul ventre arrotondato. La sola cosa che indossa è un anello con sei piccoli cuori. Se non conoscete la coraggiosa Nadia Larguet vi dico chi è: moglie di Nourredine Saïl, direttore del Centro Cinematografico Marocchino, di mestiere è produttrice/presentatrice di una trasmissione per bambini, Entr’act, sul canale privato marocchino 2M. La fotografia è stata scattata sul modello della celebre immagine di Demi Moore, datata 1991, per la rivista americana Vanity Fair. Tutto il mondo islamico si è sollevato e a dichiarato guerra a questa “infamia“. Questa copertina audace rischia di far colare tonnellate di astio nei prossimi giorni senza dimenticare che il mensile Femmes du Maroc è disponibile in tutte le edicole del Marocco, fianco a fianco della stampa arabofona o delle riviste inneggianti la famiglia. Quale sarà la reazione del Governo e dei partiti politici come il Partito della Giustizia e dello Sviluppo davanti a questa provocazione?. Quello che è certo è il risvolto pubblicitario gratuito del mensile che sta imperversando sui media del Paese. L’immagine di Nadia ha provocato e provocherà un forte choc in certune persone ma per altre ha offerto un soffio di modernità inaspettato. Sicuramente, fatto salvo i risvolti della censura, questo mensile femminile ha avuto la capacità di far riflettere un intero Paese su aspetti troppo a lungo nascosti, demolendo un tabù anacronistico, mettendo in risalto la bellezza e la poesia di un corpo femminile fuori da schemi preconcetti, gettando alle fiamme veli, jellaba e tradizioni ancestrali. Bravi!
