Nachdem wir letzte Woche mal Pause gemacht haben, gibt’s diese Woche volles Programm vom Musikverein:

►Mittwoch 25.11. sympathisch-melodischer Indiepop mit DANCE YOURSELF TO DEATH und LONSKI & CLASSEN plus einem extra-herbstlichen Indie-DJ-Set von den WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS Zwillingen.

►Donnerstag 26.11. düsterer-knallharter Postcore, episch und apokalyptisch, von BURIED INSIDE und TOMBS. Geht so grob Richtung ISIS, ENVY und GODFLESH. Aber natürlich besser. Und perfekt um sich so richtig sturmattackenmäßig die Ohren durch- und den Kopf frei pusten zu lassen.

►Freitag 27.11. ORCHID indie dance riot pop electro queer Party mit den DJs SMARTNOB und EVE MASSACRE.

Die wahrscheinlich letzte neue Nachricht zu unseren Veranstaltungen 2009 betrifft SILVESTER ST. ALONE. Das ist unsere kleine Silvesterparty im Zentralcafe, bei der DJs von SUB:CITY, CONFUSED, ELECTRIC PONY NOISES, OH NO NOT AGAIN!, KILL THE POOR und ORCHID auflegen werden. Wieder für 5€ und so eine halbe Stunde nach dem Knallereiwahnsinn geht’s los.

Für 2010 gibt’s jetzt auch schon einiges Neues:

Beim URCHIN AID Festival am 09.01. werden THE GAP, TRAVELLING JACK und L.A. CRASH spielen. Das Ganze ist ein Benefiz für Straßenkinder in Ecuador. myspace.com/urchinaid

Am 22.01. gibt’s wieder ein IT’S THE BEAT, diesmal mit keinem geringeren als RUSTIE (Warp Rec., Wireblock / Glasgow UK) als Gast, neben HUDSON MOHAWKE und UNTOLD der wunderbarste Act in der spannenden Musik, die sich in Grobritannien gerade aus Dubstep, Hiphop und Elektro heraus zu einem ganz neuen Dancefloor Sound herausentwickelt. Zum Reinhören hier z.B. ein feiner RUSTIE Mix für das FACT Magazin.

Am 06.02. haben die ELECTRIC PONY NOISES Besuch aus UK: Die FILTHY DUKES(Fiction Rec., London UK) kommen als Gast DJs.

Am 3. März freuen wir uns auf DIE AERONAUTEN, die schon viiiel zu lange nicht mehr hier gespielt haben mit ihrem prima schnoddrigen Soulpunk-Indiepop. Jetzt gibt’s endlich wieder ein neues Album und da kommen die sympathischen Schwitzer auch mal wieder auf Tour.

Noch weiter in der Zukunft: Für den 27.4. haben wir euch ein großartiges Dreierpack zwischen Ambient Postrock und Noiserock eingeladen: NADJA aus Kanada, die ambienten Shoegazer Sound mit Drones und Doom Metal verbinden. OVO aus Italien mit brachialem experimentellem Noise. Und last but gewiss nicht least: THRONES, alias JOE PRESTON (Mitglied der Drone Metal Pioniere EARTH, spielte auch bei den MELVINS und SUNN O))) mit), der für brilliante Musik zwischen Sludge, Americana und Doom Metal steht.

DANCE YOURSELF TO DEATH aus Toronto sind wie dafür geschaffen, endlich mal wieder mit dem Gerücht aufzuräumen, der Musikverein würde immer nur so komplizierte Bands veranstalten, die sich nicht mit Nennung nur einen Genres beschreiben ließen: DANCE YOURSELF TO DEATH spielen Indiepop, straight und simpel. Schöne Melodien treffen auf herzerwärmende Texte und eine grundsympathische Ausstrahlung. Denkt an 60 STORIES oder auch THE ORGAN, vielleicht auch ein wenig an FLEETWOOD MAC. Straight ist an der Band allerdings nur die Musik: Es ist eine all queer Band, 3 Mädels, 1 Junge und… nein, er íst ausnahmsweise mal nicht der Schlagzeuger.

Wenn man LONSKI & CLASSEN seit Jahren nicht schon als Heroen der Berliner Off-Musikszene kennen würde, könnte man beim Hören ihrer neuen Platte Climbing on branches (matrosenblau/ indigo) meinen, dass dies der aktuelle heisse Scheiss aus Kanada oder New York wäre: grosser elegischer Pop (mit leichten Anleihen bei Radiohead, Sea and Cake, …)! Die extrem wandlungsfähige Kopfstimme (die mit den Begriffen “cotton mouth” und “ätherisch” nur unzureichend beschrieben ist) von Lukas Lonski kombiniert mit seinem Neil Youngschen Gitarrenspiel verschmilzt mit den einfachen schleppenden Rhythmen von Schlagzeuger Felix Classen zu sich langsam aufbauenden extrem dramatischen Stücken Indiepop.

Zentralcafé K4 21 Uhr 12 Euro

Mit BURIED INSIDE aus Ottawa kommt eine der besten und auch härtesten Postcore-Bands der letzten Jahre ins K4. Ähnlich wie ISIS auen sie langsam Wände auf, aber steigern sich dann viel tiefer und härter in verzweifelte Parts, die am Ehesten an ENVY erinnern. Dem Genre nicht ganz unüblich arbeiten sie konzeptartig. Das aktuelle Album “S poils Of Failure” enthält lediglich römische Songnummern und keine Titel. Die Texte und deren Ideen stehen bei Buried Inside sehr zentral. Sie behandeln zeit- und sozialphilosophische Themen, die durch zusätzliche Kommentare im Booklet ergänzt werden, wobei der Interpretationsspielraum eher erweitert wird oder sich zusätzliche Denkanstöße ergeben. Der Tenor ist düster und apokalyptisch und entwickelt mit der Musik zusammen eine große Wucht, deren Intensität seinesgleichen sucht.

TOMBS könnte man genauso wie Buried Inside dem Postcore zuordnen. Die musikalischen Gemeinsamkeiten sind allerdings eher gering. Tombs arbeiten eher mit einem kalten und verhalltem Sound, der an Black Metal erinnert. Ein Kommentar auf ihrem Youtube-Video zog den nachvollziehbaren, aber etwas zu kurz greifenden Vergleich “Joy Division on Black Metal”. Dies wird Tombs schon alleine wegen ihrer Eigenständigkeit nicht gerecht. Zudem sind sie rhythmisch sehr abwechslungsreich und haben über weite Strecken ihres aktuellen Albums “Winter Hours” fast schon vertrackt zu nennende Lieder. In manchen Momenten erinnern sie auch mal an die seligen GODFLESH.

ORCHID ist eine Party mit queerem Background. ‘Queer’ steht zum einen für einen Teil der trans/schwul/lesbischen Community, die die Nase voll hat von veralteten Klischees und Schlager-Kitsch-House-Music-Parties. Hier rotieren stattdessen Nuwave Elektro, Indietronics, Queercore und Diskopunk auf den Plattentellern – beispielsweise von Hercules & Love Affair, Patrick Wolf, Hot Chip, Fever Ray oder Le Tigre. ‘Queer’ steht gleichzeitig aber auch für Menschen, die sich nicht als schwul/lesbisch oder hetero, als männlich oder weiblich definieren wollen (und müssen). Queers sind sich bewusst, dass es weit mehr Gender gibt, als die zwei im Mainstream unserer hetero-normativ geprägtem Gesellschaft vorgegebenen. Queers setzen dem ein buntes Durcheinander von Androgynität und spielerischem Gendercrossing entgegen. Das soll gefeiert werden. Und eben nicht mit der x-ten rosa-Mainstream-House-Großraumdisco-Party, sondern im angenehm undergroundig-gemütlichen Rahmen des Zentralcafé im K4.

Dirgy wall-of-sound type sound, like a herd of elephants pissing on some stalagmites. These are some gooooood stalagmites though: covers of MBV, A-Ha, The Cure etc.

Yacht – See Mystery Lights 

I really liked this when I first heard it, then they had it on in TopMan the other week. What the asymmetrics were listening to for about 5 seconds, I imagine. Sounds a bit like LCD Soundsystem, but with CSS jaunty fun-ness. Good for frolicking.

Both unique and genre defining, Jesse Somfay’s productions stretch across melodic techno, delicate ambient and epic heavy drone laden masterpieces. His latest album; A Catch In the Voice captures it all and has remained one of my most played since release. And his early releases on Traum, some of my most treasured vinyl. So let’s just say I was a tad happy when Jesse agreed to put together the 4th installment of the isolatedmix series.

My past experience of Somfay mixes have seen him stick to his production style. A live PA at Cadenza Lucida, ‘Our Lonely Pink Hearts Are Full Of Joy’ mix and a set on ‘Ultramagnetic’ Radio show. However, in a similar vain to his latest Hexahedral mixes, isolatedmix 04 sees Jesse orchestrate a journey into music he loves. Old, new, ambient, acoustic, indie, shoegaze, metal, electronica… and with nearly ten hours to get through, I shouldn’t even really be trying to categorise it.

That’s right, nine hours of music. Titled ‘Aesopica’ its a mammoth 101 tracks, in three parts. The first part available below on Soundcloud, and the other two downloadable should you want to experience the epic trilogy.

Solo a sguardare la  collection A/W 09….ci si sente piene d’affetto per questa giovane designer, o per lo meno…a me fa questo effetto vedere le sue meravigliose creazioni!

Mi piace molto quel fiocchetto, a volte con inserite le sue iniziali, che ha scelto come logo, lo trovo very fashion e anche con un sapore un pò rétro, personalmente mi ricorda quando andavano di moda i fiocchetti su tutto….dall’anello con o senza brillantini ( mia mamma me ne aveva regalato uno quando ero ragazzina!)–che Pomellato mi pare abbia riproposto ultimamente– agli orecchini con le perle, ai fiocchetti nei collier e sulle ballerine e….OOOooops…..ma in realtà non è mai finita l’era del fiocchetto….è ancora qui tra noi…e imperversa dolcemente facendo proseliti in ogni istante!!!

Me and Nadja would like to go out to a concert in the KTS on last Friday. So we were listening to some music and drinking some wine at her. She were sitting in front of her PC and doing some online stuff. So I began to took some pictures. After I took some pictures i´d become tired and pulled myself in her bed just to take a nap. But I didn´t woke up so far I thought before. Having slept for 1 hour Nadja asked me if I still like to go out but I got headache and I was veeeeeeeeeeeeery tired. So the wine had beaten me down.
Fuck alcohol!
It´s definitely a better way to kill your demons with music.

Sorry to all the people I´d disappointed that night.

Nadja prepared herself for the concert were we had never been to.

I am writing the first draft of the project proposal for tomorrow’s chat and will update the “latest draft” page, as well as in this post so a record of successive drafts is kept.

Two interesting research discoveries (need more research in books, as little about it online):

- the surrealist concept of “Métaphysique des lieux” (Metaphysics of places). Apparently originating from Louis Aragon’s novel “Le Paysan de Paris” (The Paris Peasant). It is the reinterpretation of space using imagination. From various critics, the novel highlights the Surrealists’ ambivalence towards the city, an attitude that distinguish them from other modernist movements such as Futurism or Constructivism who worshipped everything modern (cities and technology). It seems there are more complex things to be dug up than the “love for Paris” one usually reads about in introductions to Surrealism. It is definitely a concept I need to research as it relates to my interest in exploring backward and rural places. I only have second hand comments about the book, so cannot write much about it yet. “Paris Peasant” seems to be the key text about ambivalence towards cities, and possibly some bits from Breton’s “Nadja” in a lesser measure.

- In 1930, André Breton and Paul Eluard wrote a collaborative poem “L’immaculée Conception” (Immaculate Conception). They had studied various psychiatric textbooks and real writings from mentally ill people, and attempted to put themselves in a state of “simulated madness” before using automatic writing to produce texts similar to the ones written by real patients. They wrote a couple of texts simulating various mental conditions. The goal of the experiment was to prove the line was very thin between the “normal” and “insane” mind, and the possibility of madness was present in any mind. I feel this experiment relates to my two installation ideas: the “autistic box” simulating the experience of a self-sufficient inner world, and the installation simulating the feeling of being lost in order to create disquiet in the viewer.

I was not yet able to write a proper proposal. I need to read more things in order to have a clearer idea. What I’ve done is reread everything I’ve written in this blog (and on random notes), isolate what I think are the most importance concepts, and sort them in order to fill the different sections of the project proposal. I did not try to write an organised text at this point. I was not able to find anything for paralell theory, and did not write anything for methodology. I think I am not sure what should be in methodology: it seemed like a mix of “generative theory” and outcome to me.

Outer space/inner worlds : borders, invasions, warfare tactics.

Aims (1 or 2) + objectives (6)

Research the way our subconscious reinvents reality and our surroundings. the various dynamics between the outer world and the individual’s inner worlds.
- the subjective perception of things around us. using photography and video, media ironically considered documentary and objective
- the surrealists said cinema was like dream made physical. explore the possibilities of video to make dreams/inner worlds (mine or from imagined characters) “real” and share them with others. Especially immersive video installations can create more “real” feelings than just video on a screen. explore than as way to engage in a deeper level of communication with the audience.
- how private space is a physical projection of the occupier’s inner world (both liberating and oppressing projections)
- the house and more generally private space and its importance for the intellectual freedom of individuals
- as a consequence, tactics of controlling individuals’minds by manipulating the private space available to them. madness/sanity border questioned from an “external” viewpoint: i.e. undesirable but “sane” people locked up to get rid of them (political illness)
- coping tactics developed by individuals in response to that. madness/sanity border question from a more internal viewpoint: i.e. alienation slowly becoming madness, where exactly is the border ? “mental escape” (fugues) to avoid unpleasant things.

Critical theory

The surrealist concern of Art not being made exclusively for the cultural elite to discuss it between themselves, but open to everyone. This has nothing to do with paternalist attitude of making “simple” art (such as social realism) , but making Art that is open to be enjoyed on different levels. The key to that is that Art refers to “Life” (Ado Kyrou against the “Auteur” cinema) not just previously made art, so that a person without cultural reference can enjoy the piece relating to their life experience. Obviously, because previously made art is a very important part of an artist’s own life, the piece will be influenced by various art references. This is OK as long as it is just an innocent reflection of the artist’s love for previous art, not a way of “testing” the cultural knowledge of the audience.

The same way, politics are part of life, so most artworks will have some political connotations to them. If the artist is concerned with a political issue, they will naturally express it in their Art. But a piece should not be made solely to advertise a political idea. Art is not propaganda or advertising. Art should engage the audience into thinking for themselves, not tell them what to think.

Parallel theory
Maybe contemporary, much more moderate versions of antipsychiatry sush as the people who criticise the hegemony of cognitive behavioural therapy in contemporary mental health systems ?

Automatism:
-unstaged compositions
-used of pictures seen in dreams/visions without attempting to find out what they “mean” and without modifying them artificially in order to make them fit a “model”.

Methodology

collect photographs and footage from derelict places, and more generally strange places (Freud’s the uncanny)
1) for some pieces, these collected images (after processing and editing) are the artwork in itself
2) for other pieces, they cause an idea association in me and I need to create “artificial images” (from scratch) to make a physical representation, and edit them in
3) for other pieces I have an inner vision (i.e. dream) and I’m aiming to make it real. so I either go out and find real things that fit it, ot if they don’t exist, I create images from scratch
maybe it is 1) the outside invading the inside 3) the inside invading the outside 2) the time/place where they clash, where the border is. I’m not sure about this yet

I have seen many of my colleagues playing virtual games on computer. I simply laugh at them for wasting time (I think so) in playing games hooked to their computers at the office. But on the other round, they consider me a fool for not playing games like them! But whatever be it, it can turn out be fatal for our health and relationships.

A report today said that a man in Germany stabbed his wife to death after she fell in love with another man in the virtual world of computer gaming.

Vladimir Gruener knifed his wife Nadja 17 times in the face, breast, legs and three times in the heart. He killed her after she got romantically involved with a dragon slayer in the fantasy game Rappelz and told her husband: “I don’t love you anymore.”

Gruener, 48, said that he stabbed his wife because he had lost her to “endless hours of computer gaming”.

“Everything went well between us until January, when she began sitting in front of the computer, sometimes up to 16 hours per day,” he told the court in Bonn, Germany.

“I don’t know what she was playing. There was shooting and then people were being captured. At night I would set the alarm for 2 am and then go to the computer in the children’s room. She was there. I told her ‘You can’t do this’. She replied: ‘I don’t love you anymore. Something is missing’. That finished me,” he added.

Their son, aged 12, and three-year-old daughter were in the apartment in Bonn at the time of the murder on March 14.

He told the court: “I drank vodka, I’m not sure exactly — she said something — I’m not sure what, I had a knife in my hand, then she fell down. I can’t explain the state I was in exactly.”

I have THE best product idea for Project Company class, EVER!
It is so genious, I should be a millionare very, very soon… It is so simple, so obvious yet so extremely innovative and unexplored that it gives me chills.

Una tarde de octubre del 1926 André Breton paseaba por el lado de Notre-Dame-de-Lorette y se cruzó con una joven misteriosa: Nadja (Léona Delcourt). Se frecuentaron. El padre del surrealismo la escuchaba, la contemplaba, fascinado por aquella que él veía como el “alma errante”  apasionado frente a sus «yeux de fougère» (hojos de helecho). Anotaba sus gestos, las cosas que ella hacía, sus palabras, sus premoniciones…Breton dijo de ella: “Tomé, del primero al último día a Nadja como un genio libre, como uno de estos espíritus del aire a los que algunas prácticas de magia  permiten aferrarse momentaneamente (…)“ y la consideraba una “criatura siempre inspirada e inspirante” .

André Breton ni quiso ni pudo responder al amor que ella le ofrecía y la abandonó pronto, impotente frente a su creciente alienación mental que cada día la iba convirtiendo en una persona más asocial al mismo tiempo que la relación que mantenían se volvía más conflictiva. Finalmente Nadja fue internada en un hospital psiquiátrico y jamás se volvieron a ver. Quedó como testimonio de lo sentido y de lo vivido, un hermoso libro escrito por Breton: Nadja (“Nadja, parce qu’en russe , c’est le commencement du mot espérance , et parce que ce n’en n’est que le commencement“). Un relato escrito en el Manoir Dango, en el que se narran con exactitud extrema los encuentros, los paseos al azar por París y los intercambios intensos y conmovedores que vivieron juntos. Unos encuentros y unos hechos que convencieron al autor de que el azar no existe, de que las fuerzas de lo desconocido presiden las circunstancias más  inquietantes, aquellas que consiguen transformar nuestra vida cotidiana en magia, como su encuentro inesperado con Nadja. También sobrevivieron las hermosas cartas de amor que Nadja le escribió a Breton y que él conservó cuidadosamente:
