One of the leaked climate emails was apparently a press release from “Earth Government” Newsletter dated 27 Mar 2003. The document calls for a ‘democratic’ world government that would amalgamate and reform the prevailing global institutions including the United Nations, IMF, World Bank WTO, NAFTA, FTAA and others “for the good of all.”

It further refers to an “Earth Court of Justice to deal with all aspects of the Governance and Management of the Earth.” The document also makes mention of the “Foundation for the new world order, Earth Government” and “The splitting of America into separate independent states living at peace for the good of all.” Is this a revelation of the true intentions of certain environmental advocates, or just one of many emails in the background of calls to “hide the decline” of global temperatures (despite intense claims of global warming).

It is eerily similar to newly named EU President Herman Von Rompuy’s calls for Copenhagen to establish “global management” of the planet and Queen Elizabeth’s recent declaration during her throne speech at the opening of Parliament that “My government will seek effective global and European collaboration through the G20 and the European Union to sustain economic recovery and to combat climate change, including at the Copenhagen summit next month.”

Formation of Earth Government for the good of all

March 27th, 2003

To all Peoples of the Earth,

Earth has long been waiting for a truly global governing body based on universal values,
human rights, global concepts and democracy. Earth Government might as well be created now,
there is no longer any reason to wait. We are the Earth Community, and we will form the
Earth Government. Earth management is a priority and is a duty by every responsible person.
A democratically elected Earth Government will now be formed, and we want you to reflect on
future effects of such an event on the history of humanity. Certainly one will expect
extraordinary changes: a reorganizing of human activities all over the planet;
participation by all societies on the planet in solving local and global problems; new
alliances forming; north meeting with south (eradication of poverty will be the price to
pay to get votes from the south) in order to gather more votes within the newly created
Earth Government to satisfy power struggles between European, Asian and Western countries;
adoption of democratic principles, human and Earth rights, global concepts, and universal
values by every human being; expansion of consciousness; gathering and coordinating of
forces to resolve social and political problems in a peaceful way (no more conflicts or
wars); gathering and coordinating of forces (technologies, scientific research, exploration
work, human resources, etc.) to resolve global problems such as global climate,
environment, availability of resources, poverty, employment, etc. Thousands more changes!

Let your heart and mind reflect on ‘the good’ of a democratically elected Earth Government.
Everyone is part of Earth Community by birth and therefore everyone has a right to vote.
Everyone should be given a chance to vote. Decisions will be made democratically.

Earth Government is proposing that:

a) different nations may require different political systems at different times
b) a democratic system is not a “must have it” to be a responsible member nation of the
Earth Government
c) all democracies are to be upgraded, or improved upon, to be a responsible member nation
of the Earth Government. The Scale of Human and Earth Rights and the Charter of the Earth
Government are the newly added requirements to all democratic systems of the world.

In today’s Earth Government it is important for our survival to cooperate globally on
several aspects such as peace, security, pollution in the air, water and land, drug trade,
shelving the war industry, keeping the world healthy, enforcing global justice for all,
eradicating poverty worldwide, replacing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the
Scale of Human and Earth Rights, and entrenching the Charter of Earth Government as a way
of life for the good of all.

Earth needs urgently a world system of governance. The United Nations fail to satisfy the
needs of the people of the 21st Century. It has never improved upon the old ways and
thinking of the middle of the 20th Century. Its voting system no longer satisfy the 6.157
billion people on Earth. The challenges are different and require a world organization up
for dealing with the needs of all these people.

During the past several years, the Earth Government has been pleading the United Nations
leaders to make changes in the UN organizational structure and ways of doing things. There
has been an urgent need for fundamental changes in the United Nations organization. The
decision of the United States Government to invade the Middle East nations and Afghanistan
has shown to be a result of this incapacity for changes on the part of the United Nations.
A lack of leadership at the United Nations is a major threat to the security of the world.
The world wants a true democratic world organization. The UN is not!

The most fundamental requirement of a world organization is a democratic system of voting.
Democracy must be a priority. The right that the greatest number of people has by virtue of
its number (50% plus one) is a human right. It should be respected. The actual UN system of
voting is undemocratic, unfair and noone likes it. It does not work! Earth Government has
proposed a voting system based on democracy.

Of the 190 Member States of the United Nations, it takes only one of the five permanent
members to overthrow any decision or proposal during a meeting. This means 1/189 or 0.5% of
the membership is more powerful than the remaining 99.5%. If that is not a dictature, what
is it? It does not say much about democracy at the UN. More like a dictature of the five
permanent members. In the Preamble of the Charter of the United Nations, it says “WE THE
PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS ” but in fact it should say “WE THE FIVE PERMANENT MEMBERS”.

The voting system for Earth Government is very simple and practical. One representative per
million people. If all countries in the world had decided now to participate with this
process we would have today 6,114 elected representatives to form Earth Government. They
would form the Legislative body of Earth Government. They could actually all stay home to
govern or from some place in their communities. Today communications are more than good
enough to allow voting and discussing issues, etc. through the Internet and video
conferencing. That would cut cost of governing down to a minimum, at least administrative
costs. The Executive body would also govern in this way to cut cost down to a minimum.
Ministers can administer their Ministries from where they live if they wish to. There will
be a place for the Headquarters. We will show that it costs very little to administer Earth
Government, and that we can achieve immense results. There is no limit to the good the
Earth Government can achieve in the world. Think! What can do a unified 6.114 billion
people determined to make things work to keep Earth healthy?

For the first time in human history, and the first time this millennium, humanity has
proposed a benchmark:

* formation of Earth Government
* formation of global ministries in all important aspects of our lives
* the Scale of Human and Earth Rights as a replacement to the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights
* an evolved Democracy based on the Scale of Human and Earth Rights and the Charter of
the Earth Government
* a central organization for Earth management, the restoration of the planet and Earth
governance: the Global Community Assessment Centre (GCAC)
* the Earth Court of Justice to deal with all aspects of the Governance and Mangement of
the Earth
* a new impetus given to the way of doing business and trade
* more new, diversified (geographical, economical, political, social, business,
religious) symbiotical relationships between nations, communities, businesses, for the
good and well-being of all
* the event and formation of the human family and the Soul of Humanity
* proposal to reform the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the World Bank,
the IMF, NAFTA, FTAA, and to centralize them under Earth Government, and these
organizations will be asked to pay a global tax to be administered by Earth Government
* the Peace Movement of the Earth Government and shelving of the war industry from
humanity
* a global regulatory framework for capitals and corporations that emphasizes global
corporate ethics, corporate social responsibility, protection of human and Earth rights,
the environment, community and family aspects, safe working conditions, fair wages and
sustainable consumption aspects
* the ruling by the Earth Court of Justice of the abolishment of the debt of the poor or
developing nations as it is really a form of global tax to be paid annually by the rich
or industrialized nations to the developing nations
* establishing freshwater and clean air as primordial human rights

The political system of an individual country does not have to be a democracy. Political
rights of a country belong to that country alone. Democracy is not to be enforced by anyone
and to anyone or to any community. Every community can and should choose the political
system of their choice with the understanding of the importance of such a right on the
Scale of Human and Earth Rights. On the other hand, representatives to Earth Government
must be elected democratically in every part of the world. An individual country may have
any political system at home but the government of that country will have to ensure (and
allow verification by Earth Government) that representatives to Earth Government have been
elected democratically. This way, every person in the world can claim the birth right of
electing a democratic government to manage Earth: the rights to vote and elect
representatives to form the Earth Government.

In order to elect representatives to Earth Government it is proposed the following:

A. Each individual government in the world will administer the election of
representatives to Earth Government with an NGO and/or members of Earth Government be
allowed to verify all aspects of the process to the satisfaction of all parties
involved.
B. Representatives be elected every five years to form a new Earth Government.
C. It is proposed here that there will be one elected representative per 1,000,000
people. A population of 100 million people will elect 100 representatives. This process
will create a feeling of belonging and participating to the affairs of the Earth
Community and Earth Government.
D. A typical community of a million people does not have to be bounded by a geographical
or political border. It can be a million people living in many different locations all
over the world. The Global Community is thus more fluid and dynamic. We need to let go
the archaic ways of seeing a community as the street where I live and contained by a
border. Many conflicts and wars will be avoided by seeing ourselves as people with a
heart, a mind and a Soul, and as part of a community with the same.
E. Earth population is now 6.114 billion people. If all representatives had been elected
this year there would be 6,114 representatives to form Earth Government. They would be
the Legislative elected body of Earth Government. They would participate in some ways in
choosing the Executive and Judiciary bodies of Earth Government.

Humanity has now a Vision of the Earth in the years to come and a sense of direction.

May the DIVINE WILL come into our lives and show us the way.
May our higher purpose in life bring us closer to the Soul of Humanity and God.

San Francisco Gray Panther Earl Gilman has been in Mexico for several weeks reporting on the massive strike of Mexico City workers in the municipal electrical power system which was recently privatized, leading to firing of the workers, who were in one of Mexico’s most militant unions.  The workers took over a power plant, and a massive police action was necessary to dislodge the, leading to nation-wide sympathy strikes.

Earl wrote:

In response to the Mexican government´s firing of 44,000 electric workers strikes and stoppages took place throughout Mexico n November 11th.  In the central square in Mexico City 200,000 electric workers, students, teachers gathered to denounce the government action, which appears to be geared to privatizing the industry and destroying an oposition union. (The government claims that there were 60,000 at the demonstration.)

The head of the union, Nartin Esparza, stated: “Power comes from the people and when this is affected, a peaceful social movement needs to rise up.”¨

In Oaxaca the local teachers union closed down classes in 13 thousand schools. Also in Oaxaca the Peoples Assembly (APPO) closed down access to all offices and substations of the power system.

The federal highways between Mexico City and Tuxpan as well the highway between Mexico City and Pachuca the toll booths were taken over and motorists were allowed to pass without paying,. On the highway between Mexico City and Queretaro the police shot at the demonstrators who were blocking the highway.

At the National University there was a 12 hour strike of professors and students.

Thousands of demonstrators rallied in front of the two major television stations that support the government.  The TV stations have accused demonstrators of attacking their reporters, but this seems the action of provocateurs.

The government has offered compensation equivalent to 2 and half years wages to electrical workers who accept by this weekend. The government is also offering re-training courses for work in sewing factories and gardening.  But it appears at least  half the workers have refused the government offer and want their jobs back. The movement that defends the electric workers faces the problem that the families of at least 22,000 workers will have no income.

In the many metro stations of giant Mexico city, amidst the ugly smell of Pizza Hut and the newspapers vendors yelling out, “Gráfico! 3 pesos!”, youth crowd around the hand written posters recruiting for the national police daily. At 12,000 pesos (US$1000) per month, and with increasing unemployment and harder prospects for the country’s youth, the offer is very tempting.Since the US-Mexico trade agreement, NAFTA, the number of Mexicans illegally crossing the border into the US seeking employment has risen to 500,000 a year. Add to this the financial crisis (Mexicans repeat to me “When the U.S sneezes Mexico gets pneumonia”) and Mexican president Calderon’s measures to handle the crisis, which consist in a “fiscal package” of an increased consumption tax including food and medicine, new communication taxes and decreased government spending. Then add the fact that the minimum wage in Mexico today buys a third of what it bought twenty years ago, and you can see how the government’s firing of 44,000 electricity workers, members of the county’s most combative and independent union, SME (Mexican Electrical Union), became catalyst for a movement of people deeply angry at both an unfair economic system, and towards a president who, most studies admit, used fraud to win the elections in 2006.The electricity workers were fired on October 10th. On October 16th, around 500,000 people marched in the capital in protest. One month after the firing the people’s anger still had not cooled, and on November 11th there were again massive marches, road blocks, full strikes and partial strikes all across the country.

The Assembly

The decision to strike was taken on November 5th, in a massive meeting of the newly formed National Assembly of Popular Resistance. This is a convergence made up of around 400 unions, student, rural workers, and indigenous movements, women and gay rights organizations and left and revolutionary political parties from across the country.

The meeting was meant to start at 5, but at quarter to, the hall was already full and the streets outside where loud speakers were setup were also starting to fill up and block traffic. The chair was already welcoming each group, “Comrades from the teachers union, welcome. Compañeros of the Socialist Front, welcome,” and so on. It took about 25 minutes to welcome everyone.

There was an atmosphere of excitement, support and solidarity. In fact “support” (“This support really is seen!”) was the chant of the day as speaker after speaker from various unions declared that their union would also march and strike on November 11th, and, for four hours running, each organization declared that they would contribute to the campaign, hold their own assemblies, print leaflets, rally and march in the lead up to the strike. After and during each speaker, the audience stood tirelessly, waving their fists in the air and chanting.

On the few occasions when unions declared their support in the march, but said they would but not strike, everyone stood up and demanded, “Strike! Strike! Strike!”

The speaker from the telephone union detailed the union’s donations of food to the fired workers, while the left parliamentary party, Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) spokeswoman, a legislator, said the PRD had agreed to support all the SME’s decisions and to promote any marches, and handed over a cheque for 154,000 pesos (US $11,700).

University students promised to organize a range of political-cultural events and an “information week” to counter all the misinformation in the mainstream media, while a rural worker said the SME demands were their demands, but that they would also add the demand for food sovereignty. Even the association of retired people had a detailed and ambitious schedule of action to prepare for the national strike.

Martin Esparza, general secretary of the SME, was the last speaker. He told the meeting, “With this movement we’re going to define what kind of country we want… we have to advance and organise the people of Mexico…We create the wealth, and they socialize the losses… we pay to import what the Gringos (U.S) don’t want.”

“They’re after our collective contracts and our unions,” he concluded, talking of inequality, the need for dignity and for organization.

With more chants of “It’s a struggle of all workers of this country”, “Here the workers’ movement is forming”, “Give me an S, M, E…what does it spell…SME! SME! SME!” and “Unions united will never be defeated!”, the meeting concluded with a vote to strike on November 11th and to allow the SME to form a temporary organizing committee of movement representatives to coordinate the strike plans and campaign.

The Campaign

It was an intense week of campaigning. The next morning, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) students had already put large stickers for the strike all over the insides of the trains, and there were hand painted banners in most faculties of the university, calling for assemblies and covering the walls with virtual articles on what had really happened to the SME workers.

Many workplaces held their own assemblies and even high school and primary school students marched 10 kilometres on 8 November, placards such as ‘Don’t steal my future”. SME workers marched in the thousands in the centre of the capital on 9 and 10 November.

The March

The long anticipated November 11th march was due to leave at 4 PM, but when I arrived at 2.30, and already there were thousands of people. Many were taking a snooze on their banners, while others were sitting on curbs reading the news. One group was spray painting a huge SME logo on the road, joking about needing Whiteout to fix their mistakes, and chanting when they finished it.

The street vendors, which really make up an ever growing army of their own in Mexico as the unemployed look for alternative ways to stay alive, sold corn, chips, and nuts from carts with posters for the strike taped all over them. When the march left they pushed their carts along with it. One woman with an SME bandana and placard alternated between joining the chanting of the march and calling out, “Two gum packets for 5 pesos!”

one street vendor, Octavio Manzera, wasn’t working that day. “I’m supporting the movement; I think it’s a just struggle. The government is acting in an unconstitutional way, violating the laws and constitution of Mexico, for commercial reasons and in order to privatize,” Manzera said.

Bernando Mejia, a young worker, said “I’m here to support the Mexican people, I’m one of those who doesn’t support the government we have here.”

“I’m here to support the union,” said Ana Laura Flores, a self-described “wife of a worker.”

“I’m supporting the SME. I’m here for the solidarity more than anything,” said university student Omar Vazquez.

“I’m an SME worker, I’m an electrical engineer and I was unjustly fired. This government is a sham, it’s a government of thieves, they took our jobs unconstitutionally, violating our rights as workers and as humans,” said Omar Ruiz. Ruiz was eager to say much more, but the march had already started to leave.

Marchers chanted “If there’s no solution there’ll be revolution!” and “From north to south, east to west, we’ll take on this struggle, no matter what it costs!”, while others sang, and some stuck flags in the arms of the various metal statues that line the wide main avenue.

An hour later, we arrived at Mexico City’s huge Zócalo plaza, filling it, squashed together to the point where an interesting system of lines of humans with hands on shoulders formed in order for people to move through the crowd. Members of this march kept arriving for another two hours, while marches from six other locations also continued to arrive.

One of Many

Organizers estimated that 200,000 people participated in the march, while the newspaper La Jornada reported that police estimated 60,000. However, the march in Mexico City was just one of many, with large marches taking place across the country and in outer suburbs, and workers and movement members blocking roads from 6 in the morning.

University students closed off the roads leading to TV Azteca, one of the most right-wing TV stations in the country, and there was also a protest by “the Other Campaign” in front of the US embassy. Universities went on strike, and students and teachers joined the march after their own protest on campus. The telephone and judicial power unions also went on strike, and some shops had signs saying they were turning off their lights or electricity in solidarity, while many shops were simply closed. Miners sent a contingent to the main march and held other marches in seven of the main mining cities and towns, and the National Organisation of Administrative, Manual and Technical Workers of National Anthropology and History Institute organized partial blockades of museums and archaeological zones of the country.

La Jornada reports that 14 toll booth points were also taken over. At one road block, on a main road to Puebla, one of the closest cities to the capital, national police dispersed the blockade with tear gas. La Jornada reported four injured protestors and three police. Eleven protestors were arrested and, on Thursday, Esparza told the press that they had been detained incommunicado and some had been beaten.

The Zócalo

Standing, listening to the speakers in the Zócalo, with my feet at unnatural angles in the little ground space available, a man in a mask shared his mandarin with me, and everyone around me listened with good humour and concentration to the speakers. A group wedged their way in front of us with a large plastic SME banner tied to ladders.

“Lower the banner! We can’t see!” yelled out the crowd around and behind me. The banner holders did, and the crowd called out, “Thanks compañeros!”

Meanwhile, the students to my left were having a ball chanting vehemently, laughing and smiling and jumping up and down and sharing bags of apples.

By 7:30, it was dark and freezing, and I watched the end of the march arrive. In it came a group with drums, a dancer and a violinist. Someone in the plaza set off fireworks and the palace was lit up. The smell of roasted corn rose above the milling people as they drummed and sang, some with large paper mache masks of politicians. A group of chanters defied their audibly sore voices, and a truck with music arrived, then more drums.

Covered and Uncovered

The next day, Mexican mainstream media chose to highlight an incident involving tear gas, with headlines of “Violence” and “Chaos.” The Excelsior headlined with “Patience tested,” and its biggest photo was of the tear gas. It bemoaned “children left without classes” and naively stated: “We can’t see what Chiapas is protesting about; SME has nothing to do with them.”
What the media did not want to talk about was a new solidarity that has formed, and how the movement has gone well beyond a labour conflict, with much more youth participating than during the protests against the electoral fraud of 2006.

An SME leader (who prefers to be described as a member), Jose Hernandez, told me the mobilization was much bigger than any previous ones, but that it was less apparent as it was spread out in various places and times.

“Up until now,” Hernandez said, “we’ve heard of 16 marches in other states, and just in the state of Michoacan for example, 11,000 schools went on strike, as well all the higher education institutions.”

“It’s also necessary to consider the amount of disorganization and domination which the large part of the Mexican working class has found itself in. What happened today signifies, without any doubt, a ‘leap’ in the consciousness of the Mexican working class. We need to be patient, but it seems to me that we’re on the threshold of qualitative change.”

With Obama pushing a huge troop escalation in Afghanistan, history may well repeat itself with a vengeance. And it’s not just the apt comparison to LBJ, who destroyed his presidency on the battlefields of Vietnam with an escalation that delivered power to Nixon and the GOP.

There’s another frightening parallel: Obama seems to be following in the footsteps of Bill Clinton, who accomplished perhaps his single biggest legislative “triumph” – NAFTA – thanks to an alliance with Republicans that overcame strong Democratic and grassroots opposition.

It was 16 years ago this month when Clinton assembled his coalition with the GOP to bulldoze public skepticism about the trade treaty and overpower a stop-NAFTA movement led by unions, environmentalists and consumer rights groups. How did Clinton win his majority in Congress? With the votes of almost 80 percent of GOP senators and nearly 70 percent of House Republicans. Democrats in the House voted against NAFTA by more than 3 to 2, with fierce opponents including the Democratic majority leader and majority whip.

To get a majority today in Congress on Afghanistan, the Obama White House is apparently bent on a strategy replicating the tragic farce that Clinton pulled off: Ignore the informed doubts of your own party while making common cause with extremist Republicans who never accepted your presidency in the first place.

“Deather” conspiracists are not new to the Grand Old Party. Clinton engendered a similar loathing on the right despite his centrist, corporate-friendly policies. When conservative Republican leaders like Newt Gingrich and Dick Armey delivered to Clinton (and corporate elites) the NAFTA victory, it didn’t slow down rightwing operatives who circulated wacky videos accusing Clinton death squads of murdering reporters and others.

For those who elected Obama, it’s important to remember the downward spiral that was accelerated by Clinton’s GOP alliance to pass NAFTA. It should set off alarm bells for us today on Afghanistan.

NAFTA was quickly followed by the debacle of Clinton healthcare “reform” largely drafted by giant insurance companies, which was followed by a stunning election defeat for Congressional Democrats in November 1994, as progressive and labor activists were lethargic while rightwing activists in overdrive put Gingrich into the Speaker’s chair.

A year later, advised by his chief political strategist Dick Morris (yes, the Obama-basher now at Fox), Clinton declared: “The era of big government is over.” In the coming years, Clinton proved that the era of big business was far from over – working with Republican leaders to grant corporate welfare to media conglomerates (1996 Telecom Act) and investment banks (1999 abolition of the Glass-Steagall Act).

Today, it’s crucial to ask where Obama is heading. From the stimulus to healthcare, he’s shown a Clinton-like willingness to roll over progressives in Congress on his way to corrupt legislation and frantic efforts to compromise for the votes of corporate Democrats or “moderate” Republicans. Meanwhile, the incredible shrinking “public option” has become a sick joke.

As he glides from retreats on civil liberties to health reform that appeases corporate interests to his Bush-like pledge this week to “finish the job” in Afghanistan, an Obama reliance on Congressional Republicans to fund his troop escalation could be the final straw in disorienting and demobilizing the progressive activists who elected him a year ago.

Throughout the centuries, no foreign power has been able to “finish the job” in Afghanistan, but President Obama thinks he’s a tough enough Commander-in-Chief to do it. Too bad he hasn’t demonstrated such toughness in the face of obstructionist Republicans and corporate lobbyists. For them, it’s been more like “compromiser-in-chief.”

When you start in the center (on, say, healthcare or Afghanistan) and readily move rightward several steps to appease rightwing politicians or lobbyists or Generals, by definition you are governing as a conservative.

It’s been a gradual descent from the elation and hope for real change many Americans felt on election night, November 2008. For some of us who’d scrutinized the Clinton White House in the early 1990s, the buzz was killed days after Obama’s election when he chose his chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, a top Clinton strategist and architect of the alliance that pushed NAFTA through Congress.

If Obama stands tough on more troops to Afghanistan (as Clinton fought ferociously for NAFTA), only an unprecedented mobilization of progressives – including many who worked tirelessly to elect Obama – will be able to stop him. Trust me: The Republicans who yell and scream about Obama budget deficits when they’re obstructing public healthcare will become deficit doves in spending the estimated $1 million per year per new soldier (not to mention private contractors) headed off to Asia.

The only good news I can see: Maybe it will take a White House/GOP alliance over Afghanistan to wake up the base of liberal groups (like MoveOn) to take a closer and more critical look at President Obama’s policies.

Something to think about:

When we look at our Turkey tomorrow we will give thanks for all that we have, especially for family and friends. We will be thankful if we still have a job with no prospect for a raise, a few bucks in the bank and still able to pay the mortgage as one out of four people today owe more on their homes than they are worth.

When our politicians, both Republican and Democrat, look at their turkey tomorrow they will be thankful for all they have and for all the turkey’s that voted for them so they could give themselves a raise in this time of economic turmoil while millions take pay cuts including yours truly.

When the bankers and brokers on Wall Street look at their Turkey tomorrow they will give thanks to all the Turkey’s in congress who voted to give them our money and our children’s money so they could receive multi-million dollar bonuses this year while millions are without a job and losing their homes thanks to their games and scams.

Me? After enjoying my Turkey I’ll be drinking Wild Turkey cussing them all out and figuring out how best to get them out of office!

President Obama mentioned (hinted?) last week that there is a possibility of a double-dip recession. Possiblity? You can take it to the bank, if it is still open (as more than 100 banks have already failed this year), that there WILL BE a double-dip recession. It’s all but guaranteed.

We are told that there will be a jobs recovery. Where, may I ask, will these jobs be since we have only about 14% of our manufacturing base left compared to the 1960’s? Does “Would you like fries with that?” sound familiar as that will be about the only jobs left.

The truth is that all our jobs have been outsourced to China and other third world countries and we don’t make any consumer items anymore. Clothes? Overseas. Machine tools? Overseas. Consumer goods? Overseas. Furniture? Overseas. Cars and Trucks? Mostly made in Canada and Mexico and Korea and soon China and assembled in the US. Go to any store whether it be Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot, Lowes, JC Penny, Sears, Toys R US, anywhere and all goods will be made overseas whereas 40 years ago we made them all here in the good ‘ole US of A. Where may I ask will you work in the future?

We are told that there will be a new manufacturing sector for the manufacturing of so-called “green products”. Don’t you bet on it! All these “green products” will be made in China and other third-world countries as the profits are higher. International conglomerates have abandoned the USA and their restrictions for more profits overseas at slave wages. In the not too distant future I see the USA making goods at slave wages for the people in China. I hope I am dead by then.

Here’s a simple example. In the past let’s say that Nike manufactured high end basketball shoes in the US that sold for US$100. With the high wages and restrictions in place let’s say that it cost them $50 to manufacture a pair of sneakers that they sold for $100 with a $50 profit/pair. If they manufactured them in China, they could manufacture the same pair of sneakers for $5 including shipping to the US and they could still sell them for $100 as there would be enough sheeple to buy them thanks to advertising that convinced the sheeple to buy them and that they needed them in order to be “cool”. Therefore, they now have a profit of $95 with no taxes thanks to NAFTA that they shipped to Mexico and on into the US! Nearly double their profit of manufacturing in the US! Therefore, why would they continue to manufacture in the US? Without tariffs it wouldn’t make economical sense. The hell with American workers! Thanks to Congress and lobbyists we don’t need them anymore! Sad but true.

If the economy in the US did fail, and it will, they could still lower the price of their $100 basketball shoes to $50 and still make a $45 profit!

The US dollar is losing value on a daily basis; gold and silver are at record highs (in today’s dollars) and we are running a deficit of 12 Trillion dollars ($12,000,000,000,000)! We are wearing knee pads begging the Chinese to keep buying more of our debt. Yet the stock market keeps rising on a daily basis. How can this be so? I was always taught in Economics that when the stock market goes up, gold and silver goes down. When gold and silver goes up there is the threat of massive inflation on the horizon. Hmmm. However, we are still paying the Chinese about $50 million/week in interest payments for their buying of our about $2 billion/month of our debt. All of it from your taxes!

This recession/depression is far, far worse than the so-called Great Depression of the 1930’s as back then there were no credit cards or credit for that matter, most people saved up for what they wanted to buy and paid in cash, and most people didn’t own a home. If you did and you had a second mortgage you were considered a loser. People needed collateral back then to get any kind of loan. Recently, you only had to fog a mirror to buy a home or a car!

We are lied to that the “official” unemployment is at a 26 year high of 10.2% (U3), but if one takes into account those that have lost benefits, cannot find a job, or are forced to take a minimum wage job in order to feed their family, all which are NOT included in the “official unemployment rate”.  The true rate of U6,  if you will, is actually about 22%. Some will argue this point, but it is a fact. The government, as all governments, both past and present, have lied to their people. It’s a fact of life.

I drive a big rig for a living hauling LTL (Less than a Truck Load) freight for a very large private company and we have been in a recession since October 2006 and things are getting worse. So worse in fact that we have recently had a 20% layoff for the first time in more than 75 years! Things are NOT getting better and more layoffs are expected after the first of the year. Yet we are told by our government on a daily basis that recovery is on the horizon. What a crock!

I used to haul at least 60,000 lbs of freight nightly round trip and now I am lucky if I haul 20,000 lbs with most nights being about 10,000 lbs. Recovery? Recovery? Don’t bet on it. The trucking industry is usually about six months ahead of the curve and there is no recovery on the horizon. Bet on it!

I could go on and on, but this is enough for now. However, on this Thanksgiving be thankful if you still have a job, or someone in your family has one as you may not have one next year. Be thankful if you still have a roof over your head as your next mortgage payment may be to a Chinese bank and whatever you do, vote the bastards out of office and vote in Independents who are not beholden to the wealthy and lobbyists.

Does anyone ever take the time to consider why a politician would spend millions of their own money for a job that pays about $185,000/year as they could never hope to recoup their investment? Is it because they want to do what’s best for us, the people? HA! Not on your life. They know they could make ten times their investment voting for what the lobbyists want and not what the people want. It’s about time we stood up! It always has been that way and always will be. It’s about time the sheeple took their blinders off.

It’s said that only when a person feels enough pain that they will make a change in their lives for the better. How much pain must the American people endure before they stand up and make a change in their lives? Since they are so drugged with anti-depressants, sleeping pills and other pharmaceuticals that will stop them from peeing or help them get a hard on, etc, I don’t see it happing anytime soon. Hopefully I am wrong.

KUSI, “a história surpreendente atrás do embuste do aquecimento global”

Todos os actores importantes estão agora no lugar em Washington e nos governos estatais através de América para etiquetar oficialmente o dióxido de carbono como um poluente e para decretar as leis que nos taxam cidadãos para nossas pegadas do carbono. Somente dois detalhes estão na maneira, nos tempos económicos esmorecidos e em uma volta dramática para um clima mais frio. Os últimos dois Invernos amargos têm conduzir a uma ascensão na consciência pública que o CO2 não é um poluente e não é um gás de estufa significativo que esteja provocando o aquecimento global do fugitivo.

Como nós chegamos a este ponto onde a ciência má está conduzindo o governo ?

A história começa com um Oceanographer nomeado Roger Revelle. Seriu com a marinha na segunda guerra mundial. Depois que a guerra ele assentou bem no director do instituto Oceanographic de Scripps em La Jolla em San Diego, Califórnia. Revelle viu a oportunidade de obter o financiamento principal da marinha para fazer medidas e pesquisa sobre o oceano em torno dos Atolls pacíficos onde as forças armadas dos E.U. conduziam testes da bomba atómica. Expandiu extremamente as áreas do instituto de interesse e entre outro empregou Hans Suess, um químico notável da Universidade de Chicago, que estava muito interessada nos traços de carbono no ambiente do burning de combustíveis fósseis. Revelle etiquetou sobre aos estudos de Suess e co-autorizou um estudo em 1957. O papel levanta a possibilidade que o dióxido de carbono pôde criar um efeito de estufa e causar o aquecimento atmosférico. Parece ser um argumento para financiar para mais estudos. Financiar, sincera, é onde a mente de Revelle estava na maioria das vezes.

Revelle seguinte empregou um Geochemist nomeado David Keeling para planear uma maneira de medir o índice atmosférico do dióxido de carbono. Em Keeling 1960 publicado seu primeiro papel que mostra o aumento no dióxido de carbono na atmosfera e que liga o aumento à queima de combustíveis fósseis.

Estes dois artigos de investigação transformaram-se a terra firme da ciência do aquecimento global, mesmo que não oferecessem nenhuma prova que o dióxido de carbono era de facto um gás de estufa. Além não explicaram como este gás de traço, simplesmente uma fração minúscula da atmosfera, poderia ter todo o impacto significativo em temperaturas.

Deixe-me agora tomá-lo de volta aos anos 50 em que isto estava indo sobre. Nossas cidades entrapped em um nuvem da poluição motor a combustão interna crus que carros pstos e caminhões para trás então e das emissões descontroladas das centrais energéticas e das fábricas. Os carros e as fábricas e as centrais energéticas enchiam o ar com todas as sortes dos poluentes. Havia um válido e a preocupação séria sobre as consequências da saúde desta poluição e de um movimento ambiental forte estava tornando-se para exigir a ação. O governo aceitou este desafio e os padrões ambientais novos foram ajustados. Os cientistas e os coordenadores vieram ao salvamento. Os novos combustíveis reformulados  foram desenvolvidos para carros, como eram os motores altas tecnologia, controlados por computador novos e os conversores catalíticos. Em o meio dos anos 70 os carros eram já não poluidores do máximo, emitindo-se somente alguns dióxido de carbono e vapor de água de suas tubulações de cauda. Do mesmo modo, o processamento novo do combustível e os purificadores da pilha de fumo foram adicionados a industrial e as centrais energéticas e suas emissões foram reduzidas extremamente, também.

Mas um movimento ambiental tinha sido estabelecido e seu financiamento e muito existência dependeu de ter uma edição de continuação da crise. Assim os artigos de investigação de Scripps vieram apenas no momento direito. E, com eles veio o nascimento de uma edição; aquecimento global sintético do dióxido de carbono da queima de combustíveis fósseis.

Revelle e Keeling usaram esta alarmismo nova para manter seu crescimento do financiamento. Outros investigadores com motivações ambientais e uma fome para o financiamento viram este tornar-se e escalaram-no a bordo também. As concessões de pesquisa começaram a fluir e a hipótese alarmista começou a aparecer em toda parte.

A curva de Keeling mostrou uma ascensão constante no CO2 na atmosfera durante o período desde que o óleo e o carvão foram descobertos e usados pelo homem. Até à data de hoje, o dióxido de carbono aumentou de 215 a 385 porções por milhão. Mas, apesar dos aumentos, é ainda somente um gás de traço na atmosfera. Quando o aumento for real, a percentagem da atmosfera que é CO2 permanece minúscula, aproximadamente .41 centésimo de um por cento.

Diverso a hipótese emergiu nos anos 70 e no 80s sobre como este componente atmosférico minúsculo do CO2 pôde causar um aquecimento significativo. Mas permaneceram não demonstrados. Os anos passaram e os cientistas mantiveram-se alcangar para fora para a evidência do aquecimento e da prova de suas teorias. E, o dinheiro e as reivindicações ambientais manteve-se na acumulação.

Para trás nos anos 60, esta pesquisa do aquecimento global veio à atenção de um Maurício nomeado de nação unida carregada burocrata canadense forte. Procurava edições que poderia se usar para cumprir seu sonho do governo do um-mundo. Forte organizou um evento do dia de terra do mundo em Estocolmo, Sweden em 1970. Disto desenvolveu um comité dos cientistas, dos ecólogos e de eficiente políticos do UN para continuar uma série de reunião.

Forte desenvolveu o conceito que o UN poderia exigir pagamentos das nações avançadas para o dano climático de seu burning de combustíveis fósseis beneficiar as nações subdesenvolvidas, uma sorte do imposto do CO2 que fosse o financiamento para seu governo do um-mundo. Mas, ele necessário mais prova científica suportar sua tese preliminar. Tão forte patrocinou o estabelecimento do painel intergovernamental de nação unida na mudança de clima. Esta não era uma organização científica do estudo puro do clima, como nós fomos conduzimos para acreditar. Era uma organização dos burocratas do UN do governo do um-mundo, dos activistas ambientais e dos cientistas da ecologia que imploraram o financiamento do UN assim que poderiam produzir a ciência eles necessários para parar a queima de combustíveis fósseis. Durante os últimos 25 anos foram muito eficazes. As centenas de papéis científicos, de quatro reuniões internacionais principais e de resmas de notícias sobre o Armageddon climático mais tarde, o UN IPCC fizeram seus pontos à satisfação da maioria e compartilharam mesmo de um prémio de paz de Nobel com Al Gore.

Ao mesmo tempo, esse Maurício Strong era ocupado no UN, coisas começ um bocado fora da mão para o homem que é chamado agora o avô do aquecimento global, Roger Revelle. Tinha sido muito polìtica active nos anos 50 atrasados porque trabalhou para mandar a Universidade do Califórnia encontrar um terreno de San Diego junto ao instituto de Scripps em La Jolla. Ganhou essa guerra principal, mas perdeu uma batalha da mais alta importância mais tarde quando foi passado sobre na selecção do primeiro chanceler do terreno novo.

Deixou Scripps finalmente em 1963 e transportou-se à Universidade de Harvard para estabelecer um centro para estudos de população. Era lá que Revelle inspirou um de seus estudantes assentar bem em um activista principal do aquecimento global. Este estudante diria mais tarde, “ele feltro como tal privilégio poder ouvir-se sobre os readouts de algumas daquelas medidas em um grupo de não mais do que os undergraduates uma dúzia. Estava aqui este professor que apresenta a algo não os anos velhos mas frescos fora do laboratório, com implicações profundas para nosso futuro!” O estudante descreveu-o como “um professor maravilhoso, visionário” quem fosse “um dos primeiros povos na comunidade académico para soar o alarme no aquecimento global,” esse estudante era Al Gore.

Pensou do Dr. Revelle como seu mentor e referiu-lhe frequentemente, retransmitindo suas experiências como um estudante em sua terra do livro no contrapeso, publicou em 1992.

Então, Roger Revelle era certamente o avô do aquecimento global. Seu trabalho tinha colocado a fundação para o UN IPCC, desde que a munição do combustível do anti-fóssil ao movimento ambiental e a Al Gore emitido em sua estrada a seus livros, sua movimento, seu prémio de paz de Nobel e uns cem milhão dólares do negócio de créditos do carbono.

O que aconteceu em seguida é surpreendente. A agitação do aquecimento global estava transformando-se a celebridade da causa dos meios. Depois que todos os meios são na maior parte liberais, ama Al Gore, amores advertir que nós de desastres iminentes e para nos dizer “o céu estão caindo, o céu estão caindo”. Mas a maré estava girando com o Roger Revelle. Foi forçado para fora em Harvard em 65 e retornou a Califórnia e semi a uma posição da aposentadoria no UCSD. O homem que tinha inspirado Al Gore e tinha dado ao UN a investigação básica ele necessário para lanç seu painel intergovernamental na mudança de clima tinha dúvidas. Em 1988 escreveu duas letras preventivas aos membros de congresso. Escreveu, “minha própria opinião pessoal é que nós devemos esperar outros 10 ou 20 anos a ser convencidos realmente que o efeito de estufa está indo ser importante para seres humanos, em maneiras positivas e negativas.” Adicionou, “… nós devemos ser cuidadosos não despertar demasiado alarme até a taxa e uma quantidade de aquecimento torna-se mais desobstruída.”

E em 1991 Revelle aliou-se com Chauncey Starr, fundando o directivo do instituto de investigação da energia eléctrica e do cantor de Fred, o primeiro diretor do serviço satélite de tempo dos E.U., para escrever um artigo para o compartimento do cosmos. Incitaram mais pesquisa e imploraram cientistas e governos não mover demasiado rápido para emissões de CO2 da estufa do freio porque era de modo nenhum certo que o impacto verdadeiro do dióxido de carbono e limitar o uso de combustíveis fósseis poderia ter um impacto negativo enorme na economia e os trabalhos e nosso standard de vida. Eu discuti esta colaboração com o Dr. Cantor. Assegura-me que era consideravelmente mais certo que Revelle do que era naquele tempo que o dióxido de carbono não era um problema.

Roger Revelle atendeu à enclave do verão no bosque boémio em Califórnia do norte no verão de 1990 ao trabalhar nesse artigo? Entregou um discurso da beira do lago lá aos motores e aos abanadores montados de Washington e de Wall Street em que se desculpou emitindo o UN IPCC e Al Gore neste ganso selvagem – persiga sobre o aquecimento global? Disse que a conjectura científica chave de sua vida tinha despejado erradamente? A resposta 2 aquelas perguntas é, “eu penso assim, mas eu não a sei  certo”. Eu não consegui confirmar até à data deste momento. É um pequeno como Las Vegas; o que é dito nas estadas boémias do bosque no bosque boémio. Não há nenhum transcrito ou as gravações e os povos que atendem são incentivados não falar. Contudo, o tópico é tão importante, que alguns povos compartilharam comigo em uma base informal.

Roger Revelle morreu de um ataque cardiaco três meses depois que a história do cosmos foi imprimida. Oh, como eu o desejo estavam ainda vivo hoje. Pôde poder parar este disparate científico e terminar o embuste do aquecimento global.

Al Gore não admitiu a culpa do Mea de Roger Revelle como as acções do homem idoso senil. E, o próximo ano, ao funcionar para o vice-presidente, disse que a ciência atrás do aquecimento global está estabelecida e não haverá não mais debate, de 1992 até que hoje, e suas cortes recusem debater o aquecimento global e em que nos pergunte aproximadamente cépticos insultam-nos simplesmente e chamam-nos nomes.

Tão hoje nós temos a aceitação do dióxido de carbono como o culpado do aquecimento global. Conclui-se que quando nós queimamos combustíveis fósseis nós estamos deixando uma pegada inexorável do carbono que nós devamos pagar a Al Gore ou aos ecólogos para deslocar. Nossos governos em todos os níveis estão considerando taxar o uso de combustíveis fósseis. A Agência de Protecção Ambiental federal está na orla de nomear o CO2 como um poluente e estritamente de regular seu uso proteger nosso clima. O presidente novo e o congresso dos E.U. são a bordo. Muitos governos estatais estão movendo sobre o mesmo curso.

Nós já estamos sofrendo deste disparate do CO2 de várias maneiras. Nossa política energética hobbled estritamente por nenhuma perfuração e por nenhumas refinarias novas por décadas. Nós pagamos pela falta que esta criou cada vez que nós compramos o gás. Sobre isso que o tudo isto sobre o milho baseou o álcool etílico custa-nos milhões dos dinheiros provenientes dos impostos nos subsídios. Isso igualmente conduziu acima dos preços dos alimentos. E, toda a esta é longe de sobre.

E, eu sou convencido totalmente que não há nenhuma base científica para algum dela.

Aquecimento global. É o embuste. É ciência má. É um levantamento com macaco elevado da política de interesse público. Não é nenhum gracejo. É o grande embuste na história.

Apkures materiāls, kuram ir labas kvalitātes un siltumatdeves īpašības.

Lielākoties tie ir kādas citas nozares ražošanas blakusprodukti, kas nesaimnieciskas rīcības rezultātā paliek kaut kur un sapūst, bet prātīgs saimnieks noteikti izdomā, kā izmantot visu pieejamo materiālu. Un prieks, ka šādu prātīgo saimnieku ir arvien vairāk. Tāpēc neiet runa par mūsu mežu izzāģēšanu, bet- kā izmantot materiālu, kas gaida, lai to izmanto. Protams, šīs pārmaiņas nav vienkāršas, ir nepieciešama sākuma investīcija un vēlēšanās ietaupīt.

Daudzdzīvokļu māju gadījumā jāpanāk vienošanās ar kaimiņiem, jāveido sava dzīvokļu īpašnieku sabiedrība vai jāpiesaista apsaimniekotājs, jāpārslēdz līgumi ar pakalpojumu sniedzējiem. Ja gadījumā esošā pakalpojuma sniedzēja piedāvātais produkts (apkure) ir nekvalitatīvs vai pārāk dārgs, ir visas tiesības un iespējas izvēlēties tādu, par ko vienojas iedzīvotāji. Jau šobrīd aktīvākajos pilsētu namos tiek veidotas apsaimniekošanas sabiedrības, kas izvēlas mūsu valstī ražotu kurināmo telpu apsildei, atsakoties no importētājiem dārgajiem fosilajiem kurināmā veidiem.

Kā to var darīt vēl viltīgāk? Nelaužot līgumu ar centralizētās siltumapgādes sniedzējukas parasti saistīts ar soda naudām un ilgām pārrunām, tiek pievienots atsevišķs biomasas apkures katls, bet ienākošās centrālapkures vārsts, aizgriezts.. vai tad nav tā, ka apsaimniekotājs atbild par to, kas notiek aiz zināmas robežas ēkā?

Nav noslēpums, ka zemes dzīlēs esošie degvielas krājumi lielāki nekļūst, kas ietekmē to cenu, bet atjaunojamie energoresursi ir pieejami tepat līdzās un neierobežotā daudzumā. Pie tam, izmantojot valstī esošos energoresursus, mēs atbalstam Latvijas uzņēmējus un valsts ekonomiku, ļaujot naudai atgriezties valsts budžetā un nokļūt veselības aprūpes, izglītības un citās nozīmīgās nozarēs, bet importējot kurināmo no citām valstīm, mēs samazinām naudas daudzumu, kas pieejams valsts teritorijā. Vēl viens labs iemesls, kāpēc pārvērtēt savas, ģimenes, novada un valsts prioritātes un vērtības.

Nemēģinu pretendēt uz mesijas tēlu, kas zina, kā izvest valsti no krīzes īsā laikā, tomēr uzskatu, ka katram iedzīvotājam un uzņēmējam ir iespējas, uzlabojot savu darbības vidi, ietekmēt nozari, kas, savukārt, ir pamats pārmaiņām valstiskā līmenī. Svarīgākais šajā procesā ir nenobīties un uzņemties atbildību kaut tikai par sava uzņēmuma attīstību, mājas kāpņutelpas tīrību un ikdienas tēriņiem par nepieciešamajiem pakalpojumiem un precēm.

Ja katrs rīkosies saimnieciski savā saimniecībā, es ļoti ceru, ka arī ierēdniecība un valsts vadītāji rīkosies līdzīgi, uzņemoties atbildību par visas valsts saimniecību, jo šādas privilēģijas (iespējas noteikt) viņi ir izvēlējušies. Kāpēc šī ideja un kustība vēl nav guvusi popularitāti, kāda zaļajai domai ir citās Rietumeiropas valstīs, bet pie mums valda tāda neuzticība mehānismiem un tehnoloģijām, kas strādā? Vai tiešām tas saistīts tikai ar sabiedrības iesīkstējušo domāšanu un nevēlēšanos mainīt ierasto ikdienu pret ekonomiskāku un ekoloģiskāku risinājumu? Vai tomēr atkal personiskās finansiālās intereses tiek iesaistītas valsts enerģētikas politikā un tāpēc nav izdevīgi mainīt domāšanas virzienu, aizbildinoties ar nepieciešamību pētīt šo jautājumu ilgtermiņā. Varbūt tiešām mēs izdomāsim jaunu velosipēdu, kā lēti dzīvot ar dārgiem enerģijas avotiem, kas būtu pretrunā jebkuriem loģikas un ekonomikas likumiem.

Buscando el último libro de Michael Moore ante las elecciones norteamericanas, me encontré con una perla que no leí en su momento: Downsize this! Pongámonos en perspectiva.

Corre el año 1996 y Michael ya ha dirigido Roger & Me, pero se encuentra todavía lejos de su primer éxito rotundo, la archiconocida Bowling for Columbine. Van a cumplirse cuatro años de Clinton en la casa blanca y estamos en año de elecciones. La cumbre de la OMC en Seattle aún no ha tenido lugar y las fuerzas antiglobalización están todavía en pañales. El grunge aún se escucha… pero esa es otra historia.

La hipótesis es que Michael se ve a medio camino entre ser un personaje conocido y ser un famoso. Decide utilizar esa posición para tratar de abrir los ojos del pueblo americano sobre una serie de cuestiones terriblemente importantes para su país, en un momento en el que se juegan el futuro entre el continuismo de Clinton y el fanatismo de Bob Dole.

El libro está estructurado en una serie de comentarios sobre diversos temas que estaban de actualidad en esa época. Algunos de ellos son de una enorme genialidad, como aquél en el que sugiere trasladar Washington a Tijuana aprovechando el NAFTA, el que propone echar del país a todos aquellos con un apellido diferente al de los pasajeros del Myflower o el de los cromos con los datos de los sinvergüenzas que dirigen corporaciones.

Pero lo más fuerte es comprobar como algunos de los problemas de hace quince años se reproducen en la situación actual. La primera página del libro muestra una foto del atentado de Oklahoma y otra de un edificio en ruinas en Flint, preguntándonos qué es el terrorismo. Desde luego, viendo los resultados, no podemos diferenciar uno de otro… Y el comentario que puede ser más de actualidad con la crisis es el llamado Big Welfare Mamas, en el que Moore nos habla de algunos presidentes de corporaciones que reciben ayudas del gobierno estadounidense. A más de uno le sonará de algo esta historia…

Recomendable para aquellos que quieran saber de dónde venimos con el objetivo de entender hacia dónde vamos. A evitar para los que vivan en Orange County.

U.S. troops’ continental patch proves North American Union agenda

Troops in the United States’ USNORTHCOM ranks appear to have adopted a shoulder patch showing a North American continental design, with an emphasis on United Nations colors, giving evidence of the North American Union ‘conspiracy theory’ plans to merge Canada, Mexico and the U.S. into one super-state.

The patch reveals the continent of North America in the orange and blue colors typical to the U.N.

It also carries the image of a mosque to designate the unit’s service in North Africa in World War II.

The insignia patch is displayed on the 5th Army website, the home of U.S. Army North, USARNORTH, the Joint Force Land Component Command and the Army Service Component Command of USNORTHCOM.

The design of the patch with the U.S. eagle image superimposed seems to imply a hierarchy in which the U.S. 5th Army exerts its military command under the authority of USNORTHCOM, with its domain defined as all North America, including the U.S., Mexico and Canada, for the United Nations, as implied in the orange and blue motif.

In 2007, WND published a six-part exclusive series detailing that USNORTHCOM is a U.S. military combatant command created to respond to national emergencies in North America.

WND also has reported that the U.S. and Canada signed a military agreement Feb. 14 allowing the armed forces from one nation to support the armed forces of the other nation during a domestic civil emergency, even one that does not involve a cross-border crisis.

The USNORTHCOM logo similarly displays a continental design, but without the U.N. colors, as is clear from the emblem displayed in the upper left hand corner of the USNORTHCOM Internet homepage.

North America plot

WND reported last month the integration of the U.S. with Canada and Mexico, long deemed by many as little more than a fanciful “conspiracy theory,” actually was an idea promoted by the Council on Foreign Relations and sold to President Bush as a means of increasing commerce and business interest throughout North America, according to a top Canadian businessman.

Thomas d’Aquino, CEO and president of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, the Canadian counterpart to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, confirmed in an interview recently published in Canada the accuracy of what WND first reported more than three years ago: The Council on Foreign Relations was the prime mover in establishing the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, or SPP.

A close reading of an interview with d’Aquino published by the Metropolitan Corporate Counsel Oct. 4 confirms that the creation of the SPP was not a “conspiracy theory” but a well thought-out North American integration plan launched by the Canadian Council of Chief Executives
and the Council on Foreign Relations in the United States.

The interview further confirmed President Obama wants to continue North American integration under the rebranded North American Leaders Summit, providing the North American Competitiveness Council can be recast to include more environmentalists and union leaders.

Students at the University of Florida are working to help farmworkers battle for fair wages and basic human rights.

As we made the four-hour journey south to tomato-town Immokalee, Fla., we ran through the itinerary for the long weekend to come and familiarized ourselves with the 40-plus pages of reading material that we were supposed to have completed three weeks before. The thick packet of literature included stories like “Immokalee family sentenced for slavery,” “Apartheid in America,” and “A more-complete definition of ‘sustainable.’” By the time we arrived in the desolate town, just after midnight, we felt confident in our school-child ability to recite the labor history of this town and felt briefed on the ultimate reason for our visit.

After becoming fed up with the impoverished condition that enslaved them, migrant workers started a grassroots organization called the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) in 1993. Consisting mostly of people from Mexico, Guatemala, and Haiti, these workers had already experienced both verbal and physical abuses since their arrival in the United States. Most of them could remember a time when, back in their own countries, they survived as subsistence farmers—selling crops and living off corn, squash, beans, and, most important, their own autonomy. They weren’t rich, but they were dignified.

But after the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was established among the United States, Canada, and Mexico, these small-time farmers could not compete with subsidized crops from the States. Before, Mexico was a major wheat exporter. Now, Mexico only exports cheap labor.

“I think of myself as a son of NAFTA,” CIW staff member Lucas Benitez says. Poverty and exploitation forced these people north, where they hoped conditions would improve. But in Immokalee, the reality was much different.

As we pulled up to the CIW headquarters, a man who we had previously only known through e-mails warmly greeted us. He was Marc Rodriguez, the national coordinator of the Student/Farmworker Alliance (SFA), and he directed us to our sleeping quarters—the Immokalee Non-Profit Housing children’s care center, about two miles away. Finally settling down among baby toys and children’s books in Spanish, it dawned on us that we had barely scratched the surface of this town.

ENCUENTRO

The next morning, about 150 people convened in an old church for the official start of the fifth annual CIW/SFA Encuentro, which means “the meeting.” These people gather to discuss campaign strategy for the upcoming year, bringing together students and activists from across the United States with the like-minded goal of working in solidarity to bring positive change to the lives of migrant farmworkers in Immokalee. After an introduction to the SFA, Benitez and several other members of the CIW filled in a few more gaps in our knowledge of the coalition’s history.

In 1995, the CIW held its first major action. After Pacific Tomato Growers threatened to cut workers’ pay from the minimum wage $4.25 an hour to $3.85 an hour, more than 3,000 farmworkers went on strike for one week without compensation, including nearby citrus workers acting in solidarity, and built alliances with local church groups, schools, and universities. The pressure was so great that the company announced it would instead increase the hourly wage to $5.25.

Unfortunately, not all growers were as responsive as Pacific Tomato Growers. In fact, after this first event, it became frustratingly difficult to convince growers to yield to the CIW’s demands of a wage increase of one penny more per pound of tomatoes and to follow a human rights code of conduct.

So the coalition began to research every link in the food supply chain and noticed a striking trend. No matter the players, the line of succession was always the same—the food suppliers pull all the strings from the top; the growers act as the strings being pulled; and the farmworkers dangle like marionettes at the bottom.

THE BATTLE WITH ARAMARK

This system is apparent within the makeup of UF’s own food supplier, Aramark Corporation.

“We strive to offer clients and customers fresh whole foods that are raised, grown, harvested, and produced locally and in a sustainable manner whenever possible. And we partner with suppliers to increase the availability of such foods,” Aramark states on its website.

However, Aramark is constantly being ridiculed for not living up to its self-mandated standards of ensuring a sustainable supply chain of workers at the ends of its own puppet cabaret: Workers like those in Florida who pick roughly 90 percent of the country’s tomato supply while reaping little, if any, of its profits.

On Martin Luther King Day in 2001, the CIW took a bold step to bring farmworkers a little closer to their suppliers. They officially threatened a nationwide Taco Bell boycott outside of the Mexican fast-food chain in Ft. Myers, Fla. Three months later, they presented a list of demands to Taco Bell: Meet with the CIW and tomato growers to discuss possible solutions to farmworkers’ problems, contribute to an immediate wage increase per pound of tomatoes picked, and join the CIW to draft wage and working conditions standards to be required of all Taco Bell tomato suppliers.

Three years and thousands of protest signs later, Taco Bell folded. The “Boot the Bell” campaign by students and farmworkers was so successful that the victory received Mother Jones’ “Campus Activism Victory of the Year” award.

Taco Bell set the bar, and the rest dropped like flies: McDonald’s, Burger King, and eventually all of Yum Brands (Burger King’s supplier). Whole Foods, Subway, and Bon Appétit also agreed to pay the people who pick their tomatoes one penny more per pound, as well as agreeing to follow a code of conduct for growers and suppliers.

These victories created an astounding precedent, proving that a group of farmworkers with few legal protections could organize, take on huge corporations, and actually see a response to their demands.

MODERN-DAY SLAVERY

Back at the Encuentro, everyone prepared for a walking tour, filling their water bottles and gathering big-brimmed hats and sunglasses. We trudged down the sad, steamy roads of the migrant housing neighborhood, stopping in the shaded areas in front of various points. The first site was a small trailer park stuffed with dinky green trailers with bright “for rent” signs shining through their dusty window panes. Our guides Silvia Perez and Melody Gonzalez explained that the dilapidated trailers—most of them lacking basic amenities like air conditioning and hot water—were owned by tomato growers in the area and rented out to migrants for a going rate of $60 per person per week. The growers have the ability to charge outlandish prices for several reasons, including proximity to pick-up points for work and the lack of a housing market demand by residents other than the workers.

A few blocks away, we stopped across the street of the next site—a house that looked like its inhabitants had been gone for several weeks. Our guides, apprehensive about getting any closer to the house, began to unfold the tale of its history.

Just one year ago, the owner of this house and several others were arrested and charged with modern-day slavery. Gonzalez, in her rustic Spanish accent, explained that about a year and a half ago a large U-haul was nestled in the driveway. The chain lock around the U-haul was not to keep people out, but to keep them in.

In a fashion similar to the years just after the American Civil War, tomato growers were holding immigrants hostage as indentured servants, working to pay off their “debt” to the growers for bringing them to the United States. In essence, the growers were smuggling people from Latin America into the States and then enslaving them—making them work long, stringent hours for little or no pay and charging outlandish prices like $5 to shower outside with a hose and bucket and even more obscene amounts for food and water.

In 2008, one enslaved worker escaped and informed the CIW of his condition. The coalition created uproar, attracting media outlets from across the country and bringing the growers to trial. The tomato farmers were sentenced to 50 years in prison by a federal court for practicing modern-day slavery.

STUDENTS ORGANIZE ON BEHALF OF WORKERS

Now, the CIW is turning its attention back to the penny-per-pound campaign. After the coalition forced so many corporations to come to the table, they were ready for something larger: The overarching food service providers, like Aramark, that organize and manage food courts and dining services on campuses, workplaces, tourist destinations, and even prisons nationwide. This newest campaign, aptly named “Dine with Dignity,” is in full swing across the country, focusing not only on Aramark, but also Sodexo and Compass food service providers, as well as corporate grocers like Publix and Kroger.

Compass has already come to the table.

The University of Florida just renewed a 10-year contract with Aramark in June of while many students were away for the summer, allowing it to pass without protest. But several groups, including the Students for a Democratic Society, The Fine Print, and the newly formed Gainesville SFA are not allowing it to go unnoticed.

Concerned students presented a resolution that strongly urges Aramark representatives at UF to enter into negotiations with the CIW. The resolution did not pass, but this hasn’t killed the campaign. In fact, “Dine with Dignity” is swiftly making its presence known on UF’s campus through fliers, petitions and collaboration with student groups on campus.

APEC stated very clearly – reject all form of protectionism and embrace a very open liberal economy. Yes, back to basics, free trade and more free trade. It looks more like going back to square one instead; we are embarking our first step again to bring about another financial crisis (in the future). Have we not learn from our history lesson? Again, I believe everybody will be horrified if a government decided to wipe out the Jews race again, which I believe everybody should be just as horrified that our governments have decided to promote Adam Smith’s free market theory again. The great depression in 1929 is the failure of Adam Smith’s theory;  maybe Asians didn’t feel the impact as much back then, but now that we are striving forward in economic terms, we are in greater risk of experiencing what US and Europe had experienced in 1929. Finally, the 1970s recession brought upon by world-wide opening up their economies is another exmaple of free market weakness as well. Even the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the last global financial crisis has its roots to our free market, free trade policies.

I couldn’t emphsize more on the downsides of free trade. The governments are again going back to adopt it which is the exact root cause of poverty! Mexico President Felipe Calderon even used NAFTA (North America Free Trade Agreement) as an example to encourage Asia Pacific to enter free trade! However, according to some actual facts, Mexico farmers are worse off since NAFTA and terrorist group is formed on day 1 of NAFTA formation.Why would any ordinary farmer with a family to take care of resort to join a terrorist group? It is definitely because NAFTA would make him incapable to take care his family anymore. My dear Asians mates, can you see what we are getting ourselves into?

Finally, free market has this ability to increase the volumn of economy in short period of time. It means we will receive news that our GDP is rising, goodnews? NO! It would only make the income inequality gap greater. Furthermore, with globalization in place, the production rates will be increasing tremendously, pollution and more pollution. Finally, China the biggest polluters in the world has not made any committment to ease their irresponsible action. However, it is solely China’s fault? I doubt so, the international brands are setting their production there, polluting China even more! It’s a cycle, why are we gearing ourselves to another loop of it?

In spite of being Mexico the cheapest country in the world with the lowest production costs for manufacturing production (cheaper than over China itself) , Mexico’s internal situation is chaotic. Not only for the declared “state of war on drugs” but also by the failure of the Mexican transition after the disappearance of the political monopoly of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, PRI.

The situation in Mexico is very similar. As Russia, Mexico has no great democratic traditions, both countries had a one party state until the beginning of the 90s -the Mexican Partido Revolucionario Institucional PRI and the CPSU Communist Party of the Soviet Union- , the political transition began well and ended disastrously and the Mexicans have also oligarchs.

These days there are countless criticisms of the Mexicans toward both the North American Free Trade Agreement NAFTA and the Washington Consensus , which refer to the policy advice being addressed by the Washington-based institutions to Latin American countries as of 1989.
According to critics, the Washington Consensus is guilty of the “arbitrary and wasteful” management of the Mexican ruling class which in spite of self declaring themselves as neoliberals, they does not want to cede any of their privileges.

The Washington Consensus is, they say, to blame for new “disorder” after the debacle of the international financial system.
Many look now with envy for today’s models of nations such as Korea, Ireland, India or China, which in two decades took a
leap that allowed the conversion of their economies and made them strong exporters. Mexican rulers are accused of hiding behind the skirts of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in order toevade its own responsibilities.

I do agree with some of the critics. One major problem with Mexico is that they focused to much in North America and in the integration to the NAFTA. They thought it was easy to get a entrance ticket into the developed world. They have forgotten the rest of the continent. Since 1988, the role of Mexico in The Americas, specially Latin America, has been weakened. I do think Mexico has been little innovative since NAFTA. The sloth is having limited his intellectual energy to join the North American region.

Some of the more pragmatic feel that everything will work out to Mexico, by adapting to the Asian model, whereby no matter which political model Mexico have, but the reason for success is the success itself. The absence of paradigms and the need for pragmatism in which the way to confront a problem is knowing how to decide which dose of state and market Mexico have to be combined in order to achieve the remedy or solution to the problem.
Many look with envy at China, Malaysia, etc. ..

In my opinion, Mexico has a common destiny with the rest of The Americas. Not only the NAFTA but also the rest of the continent. By being USA biggest partner, Mexico can also help the continent by convincing the USA of Barack Obama about the need to have a common mission with the rest of the American nations.

NAFTA could not lead Mexico into a union similar to Europe with its partners in Canada and the USA. All that legal and political infrastructure that the EU is trying to build is not present in the Treaty of Free Trade in North America. NAFTA is limited to a simple trade agreement with a few extensions in other areas such as services, investment, environment.
The European Union has succeeded in creating a great model of integration, with strong regulatory and legal infrastructure within a regional economy.

Mexico has an advantage over other American countries, is close to the U.S. and could be also a country with sufficient authority to make a decisive contribution to the Americas have to pass its own model of development, based on positive interdependence in economic, but also politically and socially.
The answer to Mexico is to make possible a project common to The Americas. The solution for Mexico is not by becoming aislationists in North America but in the opening to the south.
The solution for Mexico is to recover its role as a hinge between the north and the south of the continent. A pivotal role that Mexico has lost.

That’s what Mexico needs to regain, its regional leadership and help build institutions in the Americas, or by helping to make viable the current multilateral Institutions. The joint project of the Americas is not created alone. We all need Mexico back.
The Project for the Americas requires common institutions, led by the major countries of the Americas. Including Brazil, USA and Mexico. The Americas need positive mechanisms of social security, health and education, juridical security, solidarity networks, social transfers, rules relating to the environment , and of course, freedom and democracy as the fundamental framework for the whole project.
So what of the title, Mexico should regain its regional role, and along with other great nations in the Americas, help to build The Americas of the XXI Century.

Hoy me llego un e-mail FW de un amigo, que, por cierto, puedo corroborar porque me ha pasado ya que tengo un vehículo gasolero desde hace 15 años y ya se cuantos litros tengo cuando veo el marcador del tablero y más de una véz en ciertas estaciones me han “coordinado” algunos litros, esto se no más a medida que más combustible cargas, si cargas 1/4 de tanque como gralmente. yo hago casi no te darías cuenta, pero me resulta incómodo leer este e-maill y no pensar que es otro método para “asustarnos” y Dios sabe porque razón.
