Doubtless Nagai Kafu was being sarcastic in his envisioned movie plot, but I think he would have approved of Cormac McCarthy’s earthshattering uber-post-apocalyptic The Road being made into a film. After many long delays, it is evidently set for US release on November 25, according to Imdb. Evidently they’ve hewed closely to the plot, meaning the movie has a chance to follow in the book’s footsteps and become possibly the darkest and finest production of the 21st century.

The trailer seems to indicate as much. I was stunned into a state of despondency by the book, yet I immediately turned back to Page 1 to re-read. Anticipating the movie, I’ve never been excited to be made so gloriously unhappy.

Technical difficulties prevent me from embedding the trailer in this post. You can watch it here.

“Once I was asked by a certain person to suggest a plot for a movie. I was able to reply immediately.

How about having some poor, impoverished old man run down by a rich man’s automobile, I said. He dies and his son goes to work in a factory, but, involved in a strike, he is arrested, charged with a crime he did not commit. The poor old mother, left behind, is ill and has no money to buy food, much less medicine. The daughter, Miss Something-or-other, gives up the piecework she has been doing, pasting boxes together, and sells herself as a geisha. While she is thus caring for her mother, she acquires syphilis and loses the sight of both eyes, and so the whole family dies of starvation.

How would that be? I asked. You would have them wailing in the aisles.

He looked at me with wide eyes, said that I seemed to have dangerous thoughts he had not suspected me of, and did not come again.”

- Nagai Kafu

One is the singer/songwriter and the other is the pianist, and they both got married a while ago so I havent really noted any of their recent works. One of their most famous songs is Nagai Aida, its a song about being seperated for a long time (nagai aida = long period [of time])

The best thing I love about the song is its so simple: The lyrics are fresh and inoncent, the melody and instruments, everything screams pure & innocent + refreshing and peaceful.

Relatando… Grande obra do lendário

~10:40~

Yes indeed, thank crunchie it’s Friday, and Friday 3rd October, no less! It was starting to feel like today would actually never get here, but finally, it’s Friday and I shall see Scot this evening! And he shall see me, in all of my PMS’ing, sneezing glory. Poor him. More on that later.

I shall probably come back this afternoon/evening to update this with what happens during the rest of my day, but for now I have a bit of time to kill so I shall babble on for a bit here, before I go and tidy my room up a bit for when Scot comes over! (Also, the others will probably invade at some point to ambush Scot, so I kinda want it to be tidy before the whole of F5 comes running in lol!)

Woke up for my horribly early 9:00 Friday morning lecture (it’s Korean though, and SuKyeon-sshi is very nice, I was talking to her in the lift about forms and stuff ^^) which was actually quite good fun. I am ahead of most of my classmates having taught myself some Korean beforehand, so in these early lectures I find myself helping some of the others. Especially Wataru, our Japanese exchange student. I can often explain to him in terms of Japanese words and structures, or write out the pronunciation in Japanese characters so it’s easier for him to understand. I like teaching people, it’s fun ^_^

Probably TMI but I’m having the mother of all bad periods, to the point where my stomach cramps are keeping me awake at night and I’m just always scared to stand up incase I find myself in a puddle x__x Really not fun. I’ve caught a cold- AGAIN! I was thinking today, it never fails to amaze me (or freeze me!! :/) how viciously cold the wind is up here! It was bitterly cold walking to and from my lecture, even wearing a coat!! >_<

And having a cold is pretty rubbish anyway, but it’s even worse because blowing my nose really hurts. The.. septum? [I think it's called that] the middle bit of my nose? Lol, yeah. I think it’s the septum, the skin got irritated and peeled a bit and I picked at it and accidentally ripped a load of skin off it about a week ago and it’s just gone so scabby and horrible and I look gross

On a happier note, Gina said my skin looked really clear today, I’ve been whining about how crap it is but it seems to be improving! Just wish my nose would heal up too, but I doubt it will now thanks to this stupid cold!!! >:/ And even if I look rubbish, Sheffield looks nice. The firth building [I think it's called that] of the uni looks really pretty with all the ivy all over it, and there’s this children’s hospital from the 1800s which is really nice too, if a little spooky-looking xD And if you walk a funny way back from the union you can get a really nice view into this big valley and it’s just. Picture-postcard stuff, seriously. When Scot gets here with the camera I shall drag him out with me and run around taking photos of all of this so you can all see what it looks like! Haha.

I should tidy up a bit but I feel so ill and awful that I really don’t feel up to doing anything other than sitting here moping about how rubbish I feel :p I guess I’ll at least hang my coat up and tidy the towels away so that the floor becomes visible again. I shall write more later on I guess, after my afternoon lectures while I wait for Scot to show up! ^_^

~4:50pm~

Well, I tidied most of the stuff. Bought some trays to sort out my homework and sheets for filing to put on my desk in the stationery shop on the way home with Gillian (do they have a loyalty card? I have a feeling I should apply for one…) Had 2 Japanese lectures back to back today, with Nagai sensei and then Ishiwata sensei. Ishiwata sensei was more smiley today ^.^ And she’s really cute and like, whispers the answer when someone doesn’t get it and is just. Very sweet xD

Nagai sensei was getting the class to tell her what the various grammatical particles were used for, with examples, and reached で. A girl told her that it was for the location of an action or the method of travel And Nagai sensei wanted the other use for it. So someone called out that it could be used as a general ‘by means of’ and started ‘ナイフで…’ (with a knife) but we’d not learned the verb to cut [i.e. vegetables] so Nagai sensei jumped in enthusiastically, beaming; ‘ナイフで KILL SOMEONE! ‘ …Japanese lessons are fun.

Scot came over and we had smiley faces and pasta for dinner, and cam-whored a little and went for a walk around Sheffield and now we’re winding down so I guess I’ll stop writing or he’ll feel unloved, haha!

Got up early and got ready to leave for freshers fair but most of the others weren’t ready/were still in bed! Kinda frustrating, but went down with Gina and promptly lost her s: Was absolute mayhem, crushed on all sides and just. Not a very fun 30 minutes of my life!

Headed over to the arts tower to look for the place where my 11:10 lecture was. Got lost and was a bit late! But, Nagai-Sensei ran in 5 minutes later, because she’d gotten lost too! (Most of the class found it hard to find) I really like Nagai-Sensei, she has a good teaching style, and she’s funny, too. I have her for 3 lectures a week! I’m glad I have most lectures with my 2 favourite Sensei ♥

The day went downhill from there :/
Went to lecture theatre 10 for ‘Understanding Japan’, an all-round unit on culture, politics, history etc. The guy [also known as Peter Matanle] is, on first impression, a bit of a condescending jerk (really put down the class for not knowing much about Japan, even though NOWHERE IN ENGLAND TEACHES ABOUT IT IN ANY DEPTH AND THAT’S WHY WE’RE HERE TO LEARN, IDIOT), and seems to think that although the points & lectures are split like this:

Japanese Language&Writing – 4o points, 9 lectures
Korean Language&Writing – 2o points, 4 lectures
Understanding Japan – 2o points, 2 lectures

that I should spend every waking minute doing reading for HIS classes. It’s like. Hello? Japanese- kanji, verb conjugations, vocabulary, grammatical structures. SO much more to remember and so much more important. I can’t STAND teachers/lecturers who are teaching silly little side modules and think it’s the be-all and end-all and that we should neglect studying our major subject to focus on theirs. GRAH!

He’s also demanded that we write a review on two books. One Japanese history book which he will decide on (then make us buy and read the whole stupid thing cover to cover), and the other ‘you have to decide using your own judgement. But I’m not going to tell you which kind of book!’ and it’s like. I’ve never read books on Japanese society and history and have no idea what in the hell he wants us do but he’s all ‘oh you should be able to choose your own books and study independently’ but I’ve never been to uni, never done Japanese studies, and is it REALLY that unreasonable to expect the lecturer to do his job and give a little guidance, really? Blehhhh. I’m just in a really angry ranting mood at the moment. Ignore me, haha.

Part of the reason for my horribly bad mood is the amount of money I’m having to spend on books and crap. I had to buy a textbook and 2 CDs yesterday and they’re demanding I get a £40 kanji workbook which actually only has 250 kanji in, my own book is so much better (has about 2,000) and was only £21!! Of course then I have to buy books for the Understanding Japan unit and just. Blah. Also the fact that my feet are getting worse is driving me crazy. Walking home from uni took 2 times as long as usual because I was limping because of the pain I was in. Weather is still really crap, which just adds to the annoyance of the fact that walking anywhere really hurts.

And just now, I was sat on my bed talking to Scot and I moved my foot like, the smallest amount but the skin broke again on the side that was most badly damaged and it stung so much it made me cry and I just thought. Today is so crap, I hate it, why am I here. I know everyone has off days but I’ve definitely had more off days than on days since I got here and to say that it’s discouraging, would be an understatement. I’ll plough on for now, though, and hope that things get better. May have to invest in a bus pass just for this week because making the 30 minute trip on foot 4 times a day is killing me because of the bloody mess that is the back of my feet!

I’m going to just sit here and talk to Scot on skype for now and hope I don’t hurt my feet any more >__< Really hope I’m ok for the freshers ball. Blehhh. Today is crap. I think I’m going to go and have waffles later. Waffles and spaghetti. And a big cup of tea. And a biscuit. *feels better thinking about it* Scot has to put up with all my stressing and rants etc, and he does so without complaint, bless him, so I’m going to bake him fairycakes on Sunday XD Should be fun ^^

There was a small village named Karuppanjarur. It got its name due to the lush sugarcane fields surr

There was a small village named Karuppanjarur. It got its name due to the lush sugarcane fields surrounding the village. There was a farmer by name Manakanjarar, in this village. He was also the general in the king’s army. Being a devout Saivite, he spent all his earnings in the service of needy saivites and for good social causes.

He had a daughter by name Punyavardhini. Being a saivite, he searched for a suitable match for his daughter from his community and found such a groom in Eyarkon Kalikamar a shiva devotee. The day for the wedding was fixed. On the appointed day everyone was awaiting the arrival of the groom. Shiva on the other hand wanted to test his devotee’s devoutness and landed there in the garb of a hermit.

Finding a hermit at his doorstep on this day, Manakanjarar was elated. He welcomed the hermit and brought him inside. The hermit asked him what the occasion was at his house.

“Holy one!, In a short while from now the groom’s party will land in this house, as my daughter is getting married today,” said Manakanjarar. Please, bless the couple, he added.

After the hermit was seated comfortably, Manakanjarar, called his daughter and asked her to pay obeisance to the hermit. Now, his daughter had long hair. When she bowed before the hermit, he noticed that and told her father that the long hair could be useful for the sacred thread (sacred thread was also known as Panchavati in olden days and was made of human hair and not cotton thread as is today according to the Peria puranam) he wore on his neck. As soon as the hermit uttered that Manakanjarar, removed his knife and was about to cut off her hair, when the hermit said, that it should be done without a drop of tear from the girl’s eyes while his wife held the girl’s hair.

So while the farmer’s wife held the girl’s hair, he cut his daughter’s hair and girl didn’t bat an eyelid. The hermit was overjoyed at the devoutness of the farmer and his family. He disappeared from the scene and reappeared with his consort on Nandi and blessed the family.

The groom’s party who arrived after the Lord’s visit was disappointed that they hadn’t arrived earlier to get blessings from Shiva. Punyavardhini got her tresses back soon and wedding was also conducted.

The Panchaloha idol of Shiva with the tresses folded in five can still be seen in the temple. The deity here is called Jatanathar. This idol is found in the temple of Panchavateeswar in Anandathandavapuram a.k.a Anathandapuram. The temple is situated 5 kms west of Mayiladuthurai, in Nagai district.

Geriausia nago forma – tiesi. Tiesiai nukirptas nagas neįaugs. Su šepetėliu nuvalome nago drožleles.
f) Po to su baferiu šiaušiame visą nago paviršių.
g) Tepame ant kiekvieno nago lako pagrindą, po to lakuojame dviem sluoksniais, klijuojame nagų dailės lipdukus ant nago (-ų), tepame bespalvį, greitai džiovinantį laką.

A Japanese video journalist who was covering the protests in Myanmar was found dead Thursday after shots were fired in Yangon, Japanese government officials said. The Foreign Ministry in Tokyo identified the man as Kenji Nagai, 50, a journalist on contract with APF News, a Tokyo-based video news agency. Nagai had been covering the public protests against Myanmar’s junta since Tuesday, said APF representative Toru Yamaji.

Myanmar’s Foreign Ministry told officials at the Japanese Embassy in Yangon on Thursday that one of several people found dead after protests that day had a Japanese passport, the Foreign Ministry said. AFP said it was told by the Foreign Ministry later that night that the man in question had Nagai’s passport.

A Japanese Embassy official in Yangon said Nagai’s father and company officials identified Nagai in a photo taken at the scene of his death by a photographer who also was covering the protests. The official, however, said he could not immediately confirm reports that said Nagai and other people died after being struck by stray bullets fired by soldiers trying to suppress the protesters.

Reuters reported earlier that a Japanese photographer was killed in Yangon when shots were fired, and that police charged more than a 1,000 people who had come out to protest decades of military rule and poverty under the junta. Witnesses said dozens of protesters were beaten in at least three or four incidents around Yangon after soldiers told residents they had 10 minutes to vacate the city streets or risk getting shot.

Nagai entered Myanmar on Tuesday intending to stay for around a week. He was supposed to contact the company Thursday night but did not, APF said.

Japan is considering lodging a protest to demand that Myanmar take measures to ensure the safety of its citizens, including the more than 600 Japanese living in the country. “It was extremely regrettable that the accident occurred as a result of a crackdown on protests,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura said on a televised news show on NHK. “We urge (Myanmar) to respond calmly.” There are also 74 Japanese companies operating there, Machimura said.

Earlier Thursday, Myanmar citizens living in Japan and those seeking refugee status here staged protests in Tokyo and Nagoya against Myanmar’s ruling junta. The protests were prompted by the junta’s crackdown on antigovernment protesters that began in Yangon the previous day. At least four were killed and hundreds injured as riot police tried to disperse them.

In a silent protest outside the Myanmar Embassy in Tokyo’s Shinagawa Ward, about 40 people, who described themselves as prodemocracy Burmese activists, urged the U.N. Security Council to take action against the junta. In a written statement released at the scene, they also asked for Japan’s help in “ending the junta’s suppression, releasing prodemocracy activists immediately and getting the junta to engage in dialogue over democratization.”

In Nagoya, a group of about 30 Myanmarese monks seeking political refuge in Japan staged a similar protest and called on Japanese to help. Each was wearing a red headband with the image of a fighting peacock — the symbol of the democracy movement. The protesters also demanded the release of detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
