Am I bad, or is this photo disturbing? This blond child drummer is selling churros at a new fast-food pan-Asian noodle restaurant in Nakano Sun Mall.

The cultural confusion– Mexican-Aryan-Asian– combined with the ecstatic expression, pre-pubescent model, and Xmas theme is more than I can take.

The husband predicts the restaurant will not last more than a few months.

Nakano Broadway sells nothing useful. Like Akihabara, its east Tokyo rival, it sells large quantities of bizarre manga and anime spin-off novelty items. Unlike Akihabara, which at least manages to sell some useful things, (TVs, cameras, computers, etc) in Nakano its all useless. Much of the bin fodder they peddle isn’t even related to manga or anime. Yet still, every weekend its packed with people emptying their wallets. It makes for a fascinating afternoon wander.

Huge manga collection is a big draw for locals

Just a 5 minute ride from Shinjuku station, the first place to head for in Nakano is Mandarake. Its a huge store which spreads its tentacles along 3 of the 4 floors of the Nakano Broadway complex. It boasts stocks of over 100,000 products. Basically, Mandarake sells anything they can get away with sticking a price label on.

The sheer variety of utter crap on sale is breath-taking. Small scale plastic model airport meals sell for 1000 yen (about 7 pounds). You can pay 20,000 yen for a fading picture card of a long retired sumo wrestler you’ve never heard of. And if you’re a fan of 5 inch high plastic models of purple haired unfeasibly large breasted girls wearing intergalactic high school uniforms you’ll be in heaven.

You don’t have to be an otaku, an obsessive geek, or be particularly knowledgeable about manga or anime to enjoy Nakano Broadway. As I found out, there is enough fun to be had just looking at what other people spend their money on.

In one store, amongst the jigsaws, cosplay outfits and anime figurines, I saw a bit of 20,000 yen software on sale that you use to translate your dogs barks into Japanese speech. It’s a ridiculous technology and I don’t even own or like dogs, yet I thought about buying it. Such is the danger of these trash shops. In the end, I was happy to escape that particular store only 2,000 yen lighter after buying a miniature Lego Japanese Tree Frog.

The highlight of my afternoon came as I was leaving: a huge collection of ornate 50 yen fake food erasers. Overcome by their fragile charms I was tempted to buy the whole lot. It was only the thought that I never actually use a pencil, let alone an eraser, that restricted me to just buying the green tea and tuna sushi models. They are the perfect souvenirs of an extraordinary place.

I’m sorry for the lack of updates but I’ve been ill and irritable. A cold and blisters on my feet from breaking in new work shoes.

Anyway, this reminded me of how the Japanese word 下町 (shitamachi) is so far removed from the translation of its characters, down town. This place is kind of shitamachi, but I would never class it as downtown with all the skyscrapers and such, though I guess it’s rather close.

2009 Dünya şampiyonu Yu-Na Kim, Trophée Eric Bompard yarışmasında altın madalya kazanırken toplam 210.03 puan elde etti ve böylece yeni bir rekora imza attı.

James Bond filmlerinin müziklerinden oluşan bir derleme üzerine hazırlanan kısa programında 76.08 puan alan Güney Koreli patenci, George Gershwin’in “Piano Concerto in F Major” üzerine hazırlanan serbest programında da 133.95 puan elde etti. Yu-Na Kim, böylece 210.03 toplam puanla 2009 Dünya Şampiyonasında uşatığı puanı da geride bıraktı.

2009 Dünya Şampiyonasında toplam 207.71 puan elde ederek Bayanlarda en yüksek serbest puan rekorunu kıran Kim, ayrıca Bayanlarda 200 puan sınırını geçen ilk patenci olmuştu.

Güney Koreli patenci, daha sezonun ilk büyük yarışmasında en yüksek serbest program puanı ve en yüksek toplam puan rekorunu kırdı.

Yu-Na Kim, en önemli rakibi olarak gösterilen Japon Mao Asada karşısında elde ettiği bu zaferle, sezonun ilk yarışmasında kendisine psikolojik bir üstünlük de sağlamış oldu.

2008 Dünya Şampiyonu Asada, toplam 173.99 puanla ikinci, Japon Yukari Nakano da toplam 165.70 puanla Trophée Bompard yarışmasında ikinci ve üçüncü sırayı aldı.

Mükemmel denebilecek bir serbest program sergileyen Kim’in zamanlama hatası nedeniyle kaçırdığı üçlü flip atlayışı dışında başka hatası olmadı. 19 yaşındaki patenci, bu atlayışı da yapmış olsaydı, en azından 5 puan daha kazanacaktı.

Kim, geri kalan üçlü lutz-üçlü toeloop kombinasyonu, ikili axel-ikili toeloop-ikili rittberger kombinasyonu, ikili axel-üçlü toeloop kombinasyonu, üçlü salchow, üçlü lutz ve ikili axel atlayışlarını hatasız yaptı ve bunların hepsinden temel değerlerinden daha yüksek puan aldı.

Kim, bu şekilde 2009-2010 sezonuna parlak bir başlangıç yaptı ve sezonun diğer yarışmalarını da kazanabilecek form düzeyinde olduğunu gösterdi. Bu yarışmaların en önemlisi, Şubat ayında Kanada’nın Vancouver kentinde düzenlenen 2010 Kış Olimpiyatları…

Bu arada, Mao Asada, Güney Koreli rakibi karşısında en önemi silâhı olarak olan üçlü axel atlayışında yine hata yaptı. İkinci üçlü axel’da eksik tur dönen ve atlayışı ikiliye indirgenen Asada, programının son atlayışı olan ikili axel’da da elini buza değdirerek hata yaptı ve bu ikisinden önemli derecede puan kaybederek yarışmayı Kim’in 36 puan gerisinde tamamladı.

19 yaşındaki patenci, antrenörü Brian Orser gözetiminde antrenmanlarını Kanada’nın Toronto kentinde yaptı. Güney Koreli patenciye, Şubat ayında yapılacak 2010 Vancouver Kış Olimpiyatları Artistik Buz Pateni Şampiyonasında altın madalyanın en büyük adayı gözüyle bakılıyor.

Kim, Paris’te yaz aylarında hazırlanan yeni programlarını sunacak. David Wilson tarafından koreografileri hazırlanan kısa programda James Bond filmlerinin müziklerinden oluşan bir derleme kullanıldı. Serbest program da, George Gershwin’in Piano Concerto in F major adlı eser üzerine hazırlandı.

Kim, geçen sezon kısa programında Camille Saint-Saens’ın “Danse Macabre”, serbest programında da Rimsky-Korsakof’un “Şehrazad” adlı eserlerini kullanmıştı.

Yu-Na Kim, geçen sezon parlak bir yarışma dönemi geçirmiş ve katıldığı beş büyük yarışmadan, Dünya Şampiyonası ve Dört Kıta Şampiyonası da dahil olmak üzere dördünde altın madalya kazanmıştı. Kim, sadece 2008 ISU Grand Prix finalinde Japon Mao Asada’ye geçilmişti.

Yu-Na Kim’in geçen sezon ortaya koyduğu parlak performans, onu Kış Olimpiyatlarında altın madalyanın en büyük adayı haline getiriyor.

Paris’teki Trophée Eric Bompard yarışması, katılımcıların güçlü patenciler olmasından dolayı çekişmeli geçmesi beklenen bir yarışma olarak dikkatleri topluyor.

It’s Monday morning and I still feel drowsy from yesterday’s jam. I went to bed at 00:30 AM and the air conditioner went off on 02:00 AM, waking up and rendering me incapable to go to sleep again. So, there goes my 4 hours of sleep deprived and now I’m in class feeling sleepy. Anyway, here’s the wallpaper of the week for the heck of it. I’m going to take a short nap.

OK, my morals are not conventional. Still, the sight of toddlers dressed like hookers and doing cheerleading in Nakano’s main plaza seems a bit over the top and very inappropriate to me. Why are they wearing such “sexy” outfits? And what’s up with the red-white-and-blue theme? Do they not have parents? What do you think?

The Jeans Mate near our apartment is open 24 hours, despite the fact that this is a residential neighborhood. It seems to prompt them to do all sorts of desperate stuff. Last night, raining already and with a typhoon on the way, they had a banner proclaiming, Happy Lady’s Day, 10% off.

Has anyone heard of Lady’s Day? I’ve heard of Lady’s Night at bars. It smacks of desperate retailing. What do you think?

In my photo life there has been a few true-love affairs and quite a few misses. Starting with my first ever camera, a semi automatic Olympus Trip 35 that to this day takes the most amazing black white photos, to my mother’s Nikon FM that I just borrowed and never returned, and the Hasselblad 500CM that I still take out for a spin every now and then, to the sadly stolen Nikon F601 that was one of the best camers ever for color positives, to my trusty Nikon D90. But not all love lasts for ever and a few days ago I traded a bunch of old stuff in for a new bright young thing. These photos are some of the first I took, completely manual, absolutely no post processing, with a Nikkor 85mm f1.8. I think I am in love.

The pictures show a man installing the festival lanterns announcing the sponsors of this year’s Nakano Matsuri. I don’t think I’ll be in town over the next weekend though, so sadly I’ll miss it. Luckily, I’ll be in an even bigger festival, far away from Tokyo. I love my life.

At Nakano Broadway I found this outside a shop selling military gear. Isn’t he gorgeous? Japanese must be the most talented welders in the world.

A invasão , como disse no post anterior, já é fato, e a conquista está sendo  iniciada. No último domingo (13/09/2009), foi realizado o 64º campeonato em comemoração ao Hamamatsu Shi Matsuri ( Festival da cidade de Hamamatsu), e nós estivemos presente levando o orgulho gaijin ( EU DISSE ORGULHO GAIJIN!) e mostrando que somos bem mais que só força de trabalho.

A competição teve poucos participantes na categoria kumite adulto , cerca de 70 atletas, mas não tirou o brilho do espetáculo. O evento foi realizado com regras da JKF ( a representante da WKF no Japão) já que  estiveram vários estilos presentes, como o Shotokan, Goju ryu , Wado ryu.

Confesso que não gosto  destas regras, mas isso é minha opinião pessoal, pois sou acostumado com o Shobu Ippon da JKA e ITKF, para quem está acostumado as normas dessas duas entidades conhecidas por  “mais tradicionais”, competir com as da WKF é um tanto quanto estranho, ainda mais o tempo de luta e a pontuação, tem horas que a gente pensa que a luta não vai acabar!

Aqui no Japão, é comum o uso de protetores  quando o evento envolve vários estilos, a mania de segurança dos japoneses extende-se à várias áreas,  sou a favor do uso de protetores, desde que o contato seja mais “liberado”, “tocar” não é muito “minha praia”.

No total, participaram 4 estrageiros , dentre eles 3 eram brasileiros que deixaram  lembranças. A equipe  do Hamamatsu Higashi Dojo conseguiu o segundo lugar  no Kumite, o detalhe é que 2 dos integrantes dela são brasileiros, Ibata Edson sensei e Getúlio Nakano, dois monstros do karate de Hamamatsu mostraram que o karate verde e amarelo é tão forte quanto o Nipônico.

Getúlio ainda ficou em terceiro lugar no Kumite individual, graças a sua experiência de atleta  adquirida no Brasil, o “Getulhão” está há meses sem treinar , como diria a grosso modo , totalmente fora de rítmo mas, apesar de não acreditar em dom, tenho que admitir que o Getulhão tem algo especial!

Ibata sensei, um HOMEM que se mostrou um grande amigo, já é veterano e campeão não só de outras edições deste evento, mas também de outros campeonatos da região.  Dono de uma “força de touro”, impõe respeito aos demais já há muito tempo, respeito adquirido  graças às duas marretas que  ele carrega no lugar de suas mãos.

Já faz tempo que gostaria de agradecer ao meu amigo Ibata sensei, toda a ajuda que ele tem me oferecido desde que cheguei ao Japão, não somente  no que se refere ao karate, mas como amigo que ajudou muito a família Pinto, até mesmo na hora de nascimento de minha filha.

SENSEI, MUITO OBRIGADO ! OSS!

Mas vou deixar essa rasgação de seda para outro dia, e ainda vou falar mais sobre a vida de karateka de Edson Ibata , que merece ser conhecida e reconhecida por nossos conterrâneos.
