That Sticky Candy: Subverting Conventional Stereotypes of Gay Identity

That Sticky Candy is a series of figurative art pieces by Scott Hunt, an artist whose work has been exhibited internationally and whose art is part of the permanent collection of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.  These charcoal and pastel drawings take their inspiration from 1940s and 50s photography; they present and subvert conventional perceptions of gay identity.  Hunt tackles the theme of homosexuality without the demure or closeted strategies often associated with gay subject matter in art.  In doing so, one discovers that his direct approach to homosexuality and gay male sexuality in visual art is, in a way, surreal as well.

For Hunt, the title of this series refers to a metaphor that speaks about how something that one might crave and be pleasured by can become messy and constricting.  In particular, gay men have been yoked to the  idea that they are hypersexual beings, and in this work Hunt attempts to point out how limiting that is, that a gay identity is infinitely more complex and broad than that.

Today was an unfortunate day. While perusing the internet, I ran across a teaser of Levi Johnston’s Playgirl magazine photo shoot. My curiosity got the best of me, and to say it killed the cat is an understatement. I think “made the cat look at a whole lot of nasty testicles…and then killed it” is more accurate.

I followed the link to Playgirl.com and was immediately overwhelmed by peen. (Note: I am not including the link here to spare your eyes.) Never have I ever seen so many schlongs in my entire life. All shapes, sizes and pube lengths; it was like my eyes were under attack by penis-shaped daggers.

This experience did more than force me to fight my natural gag reflex/delete the browsing history on the university computer I was using in the computer lab; it got me thinking about the presence of Playgirl at all.

Who in their right mind ever thought this magazine (now strictly online, thank god) was a good idea? Seriously. Do you know a single girl with Playgirl magazines hidden under her mattress? Have you ever sat around with your girlfriends and said, “you know, I really enjoy the sight of a good-looking penis from time to time”? (Ok, I take that back. I’ve probably said that once in my life.) Honestly, give me abs, give me back muscles, and give me a great smile, but keep the package under wraps, please.

Let’s be real, ladies; a flaccid penis is not a pretty thing. I don’t know about you, but I do everything short of remaining celibate (because that’s just unfortunate) to avoid the sight of one at all costs in real life – why would I spent $18.99 a month to load up on those images online?

Personally, the longest I’ve ever looked at a male member was in my anatomy book in high school. And I have to admit I once did extensive research on the uncircumcised penis. Fascinating topic, really. But since then, I’ll take a quick peek, assure myself that there is indeed something dangling down there, shut my eyes and then get to business. I certainly do not get my jollies by perusing photo galleries of men in the nude.

You can only stare at a man’s balls for so long before they start resembling your grandpa.

As far as I’m concerned, Title IX does not need to extend this far. Men can keep their Playboy, I’ll be fine over here with my copy of Cosmo.

OK, here’s the thing naked young men cooling off in a carwash, there are some pretty high pressured cleaners in there! Four young dudes, paid their $17 before stripping off and running around inside a carwash in central Queensland. Their fun came to a grinding halt after cops, cruising the area, spotted them. A service station attentant said the sprayers “could’ve blown their eyes out of their sockets” not to mention remove their friggin skin. Oh well, they’ll have to scrub up for a court appearance now, public nuisance and wilful exposure doesn’t look good on anyone’s resume!

For those of you who will have trouble understanding the clip from the danish television series ‘the 11th hour’ below, the quickie recap and background goes like this:

One of the largest parties in Denmark (scoring a good 13+ % of the votes during the last elections) is Dansk Folkeparti (actually, don’t bother clicking the link unless you want to see some really ugly code work – - none of the information is given in english). Anyway, DF has made a name and a rabble by voicing their somewhat controversial political opinions, particularly regarding their dogmatic take on immigration politics. In Sweden, we’ve heard of them as well… mostly through media representation where we’ve learned that they are right-wing xenophobic fuck-tards, but as always it is difficult to separate the facts from the spin, and even though I may or may not agree that right-wing xenophobes generally Are fucktards… I don’t feel that I have enough hands-on hardcore knowledge to make a proper assessment. I know, I know, boring right? But hang in there, we’re about to get to the good stuff.

Now, what does all this have to do with two naked men running around on stage saying ‘Pling’? Well, see, the thing is this: recently the head of the tribe of Dansk Folkeparti, Pia Kjærsgaard, took upon herself the noble task of becoming a member of the Danish Art Council. No joke. The immediate consequence of this is that Pia Kjærsgaard now has a say in which artists/art projects are to receive major funding from the state. We’re talking millions and millions of danish dough. In itself, this doesn’t Have to be a problem. I mean, Pia K’s shady politics needn’t necessarily reflect her views/knowledge about art, right? Right. Unfortunately, Kjærsgaard has revealed herself to be about as open minded and level headed in the matter as a stubborn and reactionary dominican nun. Upon taking her place in the Art Council, Pia was asked what kind of art she is not akin to, and she explained (with biting sarcasm) that she had difficulties understanding how two naked men running around on stage saying ‘pling’ could be art. Obviously it was meant to be a humorous condescending remark about contemporary art, with no objective but ultimate ridicule and so – completely lacking real reference points. BUT, and here is the sweet sugary lollypop of genius, a danish TV show, ‘the 11th hour’, called Pia Kjærsgaard on her comment and researched if such an art work has ever been made. As it turned out, no such piece existed… So they decided to make it. Yep, that’s right. And thus came the day, the glorious day, when the 11th hour made Pia Kjærsgaards artistic (nightmare)vision into reality. Watch and be amazed.
